The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the provincial delegate for Health of the Andalusian Regional Government, Carlos Bautista, presented an awareness campaign on Friday 30th on the appropriate use of screens among minors. The initiative is a collaboration between the Costa del Sol Primary Care District of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) and Mijas Comunicación.

Under the name ‘Peques sin pantallas’ (Kids Without Screens), this awareness action consists of a series of videos in which healthcare professionals report on the harmful effects of the inappropriate use of mobile devices among young children.

The initiative comprises a series of informative clips to

be broadcast on Mijas Comunicación from Monday 4th, with one released per day until all ten themed videos have been aired.

On Monday 4th of May, the first video will be released, focusing on boredom management; on Tuesday, how excessive screen time can affect eating habits; on the 6th, on attachment; on

Thursday 7th, screens and learning; and on Friday 8th, families as role models.

children’s eyesight; on Wednesday 13th, the topic will be language; on Thursday 14th, obesity; and finally, on Friday 15th, the material will focus on managing tantrums.

Also present at the launch were eight paediatricians from the municipality’s three health centres, as well as the manager of the Costa del Sol Health District, Elena Ayllón; the director of the Las Lagunas Health Centre, Gregorio Ortega; and Maite Gorrotxategi, a health education officer for the health district.

Finally, the regional delegate for Health of the Andalusian Regional Government explained that screens are a genuine addictive factor, scientifically documented, which complicates children’s cognitive development, “as they also stop participating in other beneficial activities such as sport, writing, painting or socialising with their peers”.

On Friday 24th, the Mijas Town Hall approved a motion in a plenary session to fast-track investments in the municipality totalling over 33 million euros, which will fund 128 projects. These include road infrastructure, sports facilities, public amenities, as well as cleaning and water supply services, in addition to the drafting of plans for the refurbishment and pedestrianisation of streets. The provision of underground bins in the municipality (250,000 euros), the tender for the refurbishment of La Butibamba Park, and the completion of the outstanding sections of the Coastal Path to Fuengirola are all part of the initiatives planned under this approved budget amendment.

“This is the margin the government team has to get things done, and these are our priorities”, explained the councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP), who noted that “some of the projects were initiated by previous government teams and others by us”.

“They may well be completed in future terms of office, although we are committed to at least putting them out to tender and awarding

the contracts this year and, if possible, starting the works”, he added.

Sports facilities The projects also include the completion of the La Cala swimming pool, for which 1.4 million euros has been allocated; the repair of the roof of the Las Lagunas sports centre (1.1 million euros); and the drafting of the project for the replacement of the turf, storage facilities and changing rooms at the adjacent Las Lagunas football pitch.

The approved budget amendment represents a decisive boost for the municipal car park plan, as the Los Santos car park, due to open shortly, is joined by the Mijas Pueblo car park, for which the drafting of the project and the ten-

der for works, with a budget of 5.5 million euros, are included among these actions. Also included is the car park at Andalucía Park (project and tender for works, with a budget of 250,000 euros), as well as those at Las Cañadas, La Candelaria, El Juncal and the La Cala Boulevard.

Further projects Furthermore, the Mijas Town Hall has allocated funding for projects such as the dualling of Camino de Coín between the Víctimas del Terrorismo roundabout and Camino de Campanales; and the access bridges to the Gran Parque, which have been allocated a budget of 800,000 euros. taken, with the projects funded by the amendment, including Segovia, Cómpeta, Butiplaya, Júzcar, Cártama, Alemania and Benarrabá streets. Roadworks will also be carried out in Mijas Pueblo (Juan García Alarcón, Callejón de los Gitanos and Cueva del Agua), where 150,000 euros will be allocated to the project for the refurbishment of the access road to the Puerto chapel and its restoration.

In the outlying areas, 500,000 euros are allocated to repairs to public roads, and work is also being driven forward on the La Alquería sewer and the project for the new road link between the Manzanilla area and the A-7053 road. A further 350,000 euros are allocated to works to seal the municipal landfill.

Resurfacing of residential developments In this budget amendment, the Town Hall has allocated a total of 2.5 million euros for the resurfacing of public roads; and is promoting the refurbishment of the drinking water supply networks in El Coto (150,000 euros) and Doña Pilar (141,000 euros).

In addition, plans include the refurbishment of the roundabout on the access road to the racecourse (150,000 euros) and that of Osunillas (700,000 euros).

while the PSOE and Cs opposed it. “It’s all smoke and mirrors; what you’re going to see from now on is simply press conferences announcing what they’re going to do, what they’ve budgeted for, that the tendering process has begun, that one thing or another is being put out to tender… but the end of the term of office is just around the corner”, said the spokesperson for the PSOE Municipal Group, Roy Pérez. “As you said, Mr Bravo, you have brought this here with malice aforethought and under cover of darkness, with 33 million euros for 94 [infrastructure] projects that you are now going to try to sell to the public, saying that we are going to do this, that we have planned… but the reality, the tangible outcome, what the public will actually receive at this stage, is very unlikely…”, noted José Carlos Martín, spokesperson for Ciudadanos.

The government team stressed that the aim is to get these projects underway as soon as possible. “Most of these projects have already been awarded, pending the availability of funds to finance them”, replied Bravo.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), emphasised that the amendment completes the initial budget. “We will continue to do things for this municipality, which has been so badly affected by political instability, meaning that the municipal administration has been unable to meet the needs of the public”.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP); the councillor for Cleaning at the Mijas Town Hall, Eloy Belmonte (Vox); the president of the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, Manuel Cardeña, and representatives from Urbaser presented three new collection lorries in Mijas on Monday 27th. These vehicles will join the selective paper, cardboard and packaging collection service for Mijas, Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Marbella, as part of the new contract awarded to the company. According to the council, these vehicles represent a significant step forward in efficiency, environmental sustainability and the improvement of the public collection service in the municipality and across the Costa del Sol, where a total of 38 lorries will operate.

The new vehicles are sideloading collection lorries with a compactor body and are specially designed to operate in urban environments, combining high technical performance with a strong commitment to the environment.

Among their main features, it is highlighted that they feature a dual-fuel diesel–LPG hybrid engine system, which significantly reduces pollutant emissions. These vehicles also lower noise levels during operation, a particularly important aspect in urban areas.

In Mijas, a 14% increase has been recorded compared to last year

a system enabling the automated collection of bins of up to 3,200 litres, optimising working times and improving operational safety. The payload reaches 18,762 kg, with a maximum authorised mass of 26,000 kg, offering high operational capacity.

During the presentation, representatives from Urbaser and the Association of Municipalities highlighted that the three new lorries would be put into service that very afternoon.

with a geolocation device that will indicate the amount of waste in the bin for greater efficiency when collecting them”.

For his part, Belmonte noted that “the arrival of these lorries was much needed, as side-loading bins had been introduced in recent months without yet having the appropriate means for their collection, which hindered the service in certain areas”. In this regard, he added that “from now on, not only will operational capacity be improved, but also, with the new contract with the Association of Municipalities, collection frequencies will increase, something that will be particularly noticeable in urban centres and also in outlying areas”. He also noted that “these vehicles incorporate weighing

systems that will provide a better understanding of recycling habits by area, allowing for routes to be adjusted and the service to be reinforced where necessary”. Finally, the councillor emphasised the importance of community involvement, stressing that “improving the service also depends on the correct use of bins, especially in the case of cardboard, which must be folded when deposited to make the most of the available capacity”. In the same vein, the mayoress also made an appeal: “The commitment of residents to the cleanliness of the municipality is essential”, and reminded everyone that “we are very vigilant in ensuring that people who do not comply with the waste disposal ordinance are fined by various

The Mijas branch of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) presented the first Charity Lunch Against Cancer on Monday 27th, which will take place on Wednesday 7th of May at 14 hours at El Torreón restaurant in La Cala.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied the president of the Mijas AECC branch, Mari Carmen Gómez, at the presentation held at El Torreón restaurant.

Both highlighted the importance of such charitable initiatives in boosting cancer research and making social commitment to the cause more visible.

According to Gómez, the event coincides with Fundraising Day, “the annual day when the AECC takes to the streets with the help of volunteers and charity collection tins to raise funds for cancer research, prevention and support for patients and their families”. In this context, the lunch becomes

The mayoress encouraged Mijas residents to take an active part in the Fundraising Day and to attend this event, reiterating the Town Hall’s commitment to the AECC and its activities. “The best way to combat this disease is through research, and that is why the goal of this lunch is so important: to provide science with the resources to advance in cancer prevention.

It is a common social challenge in which we must all be involved”, she said.

For her part, Gómez stressed the value of community and business involvement, thanking El Torreón restaurant, the event host and a regular collaborator: “El Torreón and its staff have been showing their commitment to our cause for years, supporting solidarity initiatives, collaborating on charity calendars and providing vouchers for events at the Mijas and Benalmádena branches.

B.M. On Sunday 26th of April, Frank Flebus, a member of Rotary Club Mijas International, led a charity initiative by completing a 200-kilometre cycle ride with a total elevation gain of 983 metres.

The route traversed part of the Málaga coast (from Mijas to Nerja and back to Venta La Morena via Cártama station, Churriana, Benalmádena Costa and Fuengirola). The aim of this challenge was to raise funds for AFA Mijas (the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s patients and other Dementias).

Members of the public were able to support the cause by making donations at 5 cents per kilometre, with a minimum contribution of 10 euros, contributing to an initiative that combined personal effort and social commitment.

Furthermore, to ensure the day is a true celebration, performances by the groups Los Zayas and Kalima are scheduled to begin at 15:30 hours.
