dedicated to the little ones The first day of the fair focused on children, who were encouraged, through a storytelling session, to make reading a regular part of their daily lives. “We would like to invite families to try to bring a book or a comic for their children when, for example, they go out to eat, with the aim of fostering the essential habit of reading and also to steer them away from a health issue that currently exists and which, as we all know, is caused by screens”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP).

Similarly, the writer Marisi Morales, who was responsible for narrating a story to a group of students at CEIP Tamixa, emphasised that “a child who does not read will struggle to develop a critical opinion, and that is essential, because we cannot simply believe everything we are told or what we see on a screen”. We also spoke to a student from Tamixa School, Sofía Rodríguez, who said she “reads almost every day, after school or after doing her homework”, and who also encouraged her classmates to adopt this routine “because reading isn’t boring; you just have to find out what sort of book you like best”.

The Parks and Gardens Department of the Mijas Town Hall has quadrupled the rate of tree planting within the municipal area compared to last year, and has already exceeded 540 trees since the start of January. When these plantings are added to those carried out in 2025, the number of specimens exceeds 1,100 across the entire municipality.

The initiative, launched by this department, is aimed at increasing tree cover and vegetation in the municipality. The objective is also to replace units that were blown down by strong gusts of wind during winter storms or, more recently, affected by the ‘Fusarium’ fungus, as occurred with the palm trees. This was stated on Monday 20th by the councillor responsible for the area, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), who noted that “we want

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied by the chief superintendent of the National Police in Fuengirola, Juan Cabas, and the secretary general of the Provincial Police Headquarters, Isaac Pacheco, announced on Wednesday 22nd that a mobile unit for issuing ID cards and passports will be stationed in the town on the 7th of May. In this way, Mijas residents will not have to travel outside the municipality to carry out these procedures.

“The van operates exactly like a DNI office with two workstations, issuing ID cards and passports, and it also has a separate station where ID certificates can be renewed”, explained Pacheco, who added that “its daily issuance capacity is 50 documents, 25 docu-

ments per workstation, which is exactly the same as a DNI office at any police station”.

This mobile office is a ‘Vehículo Integral de Documentación’ (Vidoc), or Integrated Documentation Vehicle, which will be stationed at Cortijo Don Elías thanks to an agreement with the Mijas Town Hall. Here, residents will be able to carry out the necessary procedures to obtain an ID card or passport, whether for firsttime issuance or renewal. Those interested must register to use this service at the Citizen Services desk at the Las Lagunas Town Hall Branch.

Following this first day of document issuance on the 7th of May, the vehicle will return to Mijas on dates yet to be decided, as part of a mobile programme developed by the National Police to bring this service closer to the public.

“Thanks to the collaboration with the National Police, this unit will enable many citizens, particularly the elderly, those with reduced mobility or who find it difficult to travel, to carry out this essential procedure without having to leave our municipality”, explained Mata, who expressly thanked the National Police for their willingness, approachability and commitment to this project.

The Mijas Town Hall, through its Tourism Department, is taking part in a travelling promotional campaign across the Balkans organised in conjunction with Turismo Costa del Sol, with the aim of raising awareness of the destination in strategic markets in Eastern Europe.

This initiative, which is being carried out in a ‘road trip’ format, includes various stops in cities such as Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana, where professional meetings are being held with travel agencies, tour operators and other agents in the tourism sector.

Finally, Jerez concluded that Mijas will continue to support this type of initiative “which allows us to be present where decisions are made and where the flow of tourism for the coming years is defined”, reaffirming the Tourism Department’s commitment to the municipality’s international promotion.

SOLIDARITY “And there is a severe shortage of volunteers to help clean the kennels, feed, pet and walk the dogs”, they commented. The shelter therefore stated that “any kind of help is absolutely essential” for ACE Shin, which since 1999 has rescued and rehomed more than 33,000 dogs and cats, “still relying exclusively on donations”.

Success for the ACE Shin shelter’s charity dinner The event raised 2,700 euros to feed over 500 dogs and 200 cats M.F. Animal Care España (ACE) Shin described the reception to its spring charity dinner, held on Saturday 11th of April at La Sierra Restaurant in Cerrado del Águila, as a “success”. A total of 111 animal lovers attended the event organised by the dog shelter.

The event began with a welcome drink on arrival and was followed by a three-course dinner.

Violinist and vocalist Crissie Ryan performed, and the dinner was sponsored by Ibex Insurance and Costa Connection magazine. In total, ACE Shin reported in a press release, 2,700 euros were raised to help feed and care for the more than 500 dogs and over 200 cats currently under the care of the shelter, based in La Cala de Mijas.

The evening also featured a charity raffle with prizes donated by members of the local community and friends of ACE,

as well as an auction. “Sadly, people continue to abandon their unwanted pets at the shelter’s gates almost daily”, they added.

Volunteering ACE Shin points out that “all support is always greatly appreciated”. They therefore invite the public to help in whatever way they can: by donating food, volunteering, fostering, sponsoring or adopting a pet.

The Ukrainian Centre Familia Unida, which opened last November, has reopened its doors to promote Ukrainian art and culture with a new exhibition, its second so far this year. On this occasion, it is showcasing the art of Paraska Plytka-Horytsvit, a compatriot whose birth centenary will be celebrated next year. Known for various creative facets, including her work as a writer, she passed away in 1998.

Mijas comes together for a charity dog walk in aid of Cudeca Attendees highlight the vital medical and psychological support provided to patients and their families N.L. On Sunday 19th, the Mijas Grand Park became the setting for a day where animal welfare and solidarity walked hand in hand.

Under the motto of a conscious walk, numerous local residents gathered to take part in a training session that included self-control exercises, scent games and practical guidelines for owners. The initiative, born out of the commitment of a local resident, had

the primary objective of raising funds for the Cudeca Foundation, a leading entity in palliative care.

This Sunday event marked the end of a cycle of three sessions designed to improve the socialisation of dogs in public spaces.

As explained by the organiser, dog trainer and therapist Karen Valdivieso, the programme was adapted to the needs of each animal: Friday was reserved for fearful dogs, Saturday for reactive ones and Sunday for balanced dogs.

Life-saving interventions Valdivieso, who combines her private training business with therapies at Cudeca, highlighted the importance of this work. “I decided to carry out this activity not

only to raise funds for Cudeca, so they can continue helping people, but also to encourage people to come to a different activity with their dog”, the expert stated.

This resident elaborated on how animals become a fundamental support for palliative care patients both at home and at the Benalmádena hospice.

“We work with physiotherapists and psychologists, setting short-, medium- and long-term goals to seek improvements in the physical and mental state of the patient and their family”, she explained.

María José García, a participating resident, attended with her two dogs and recounted that her husband “passed away from cancer four months ago aged 55, and

Cudeca has been a great support, not only medically but, above all, psychologically”. María José continues to receive assistance from the entity and, for her, taking part in these events is a way of thanking those she calls “angels”.

Municipal commitment The Town Hall backed the activity, highlighting citizen involvement in social causes. The councillor for Animal Welfare, Marco Cortés (PP), accompanied the

participants and emphasised the importance of of canine education for civic coexistence. “Animals must be educated so that they coexist well with people; they are already a fundamental part of our families”, noted the councillor.

On Monday 20th of April, the Mijas Town Hall reiterated to the Spanish Government “the urgent need” for the definitive stabilisation of the coastline and its beaches with breakwaters. The council emphasises that “the lack of structural solutions directly affects the integrity and environmental quality of the beaches; the safety and functionality of certain sections; and the main economic activity: coastal tourism”.

In a letter sent by the mayoress of the city, Ana Mata (PP), to the Director General for the Coast and the Sea at the Ministry for Ecological Transition, Ana María Oñoro, she calls for “an immedia-

te, clear and operational response regarding the actual situation and a certain forecast for its advancement”.

Mata recalls that the need for a stable solution “was identified some time ago and prompted the initiative by the Central Government to move forward with a specific action in the El Bombo and La Cala areas, but there has been no significant progress or explanation”.

Report The text underlines that Mijas bears the consequences of the regression and instability of its beaches year after year, “and is forced to act repeatedly”, it continues.

Mata therefore requests that Mijas Town Hall be informed in writing, in a full and detailed manner, of the exact status of the administrative process for the stabilisation work at La Cala and El Bombo, “indicating the milestones already achieved, the pending procedures, any existing obstacles and the planned timetable for its development”.

Last Sunday, 19th of April, El Esparragal Park hosted the Costa del Sol Mölkky Open, an international competition, part of a wide-ranging programme of activities carried out by the Costa del Sol Mölkky Association, which was responsible for the organisation. If they knock over the pin numbered 7, they score 7 points, but if they knock over several, only the number of pins knocked over is counted; the game ends when 50 points are reached”.

J.P./N.L. The Youth Department of the Mijas Town Hall is joining in with FreakCon in Málaga, which will be held from the 22nd to the 24th of May at the Torremolinos Conference Centre. The Department will be offering young people from Mijas the chance to travel to the event free of charge on the 23rd.

The activity is intended for registered residents, and to reserve a place, it is essential to have a ticket for the event. Minors under 16 may participate provided they are accompanied by a responsible adult.

Places are limited, and the deadline to sign up is the 15th of May.
