Holy Week 2026. Palm Sunday
Joy and devotion on Palm Sunday
The traditional blessing of the palms took place in the three centres of Mijas, with children as the true protagonists
Mijas experienced Palm Sunday with faith and joy. Thus began Holy Week, featuring the image of ‘La Pollinica’: the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Although strong gusts of wind prevented the traditional procession of the throne through the village this year, the people of Mijas enjoyed a family day. Celebrations were also held in Las Lagunas, La Cala and Calahonda, with the blessing of palms held at all three locations. In the village, the celebration began at the Virgen de la Peña chapel with the blessing of the palms. The parish priest of Mijas Pueblo, Hermán Marcel Lunar, officiated the religious act. “We organised this Palm Sunday with great affection and responsibility; we were eager to experience it”, expressed the priest.
Ana Mata: “It was a TRULY BEAUTIFUL AND SPECIAL CELEBRATION, FULL OF HEART AND SOUL”
Alongside the religious community and residents, there was an extensive representation from the municipal corporation, led by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP). Following the blessing of the palms, those present made their way towards the parish church of La Inmaculada, singing, praying and celebrating with joy. Once inside the church, a Holy Mass was officiated. The throne of La Pollinica was positioned inside, which this year included the recovered image of the Samaritan woman, which had not appeared in the procession for several years. The miniature throne was also prepared which, as is traditional, is always carried by children.
For safety reasons, the procession ultimately did not take place. However, the Mijas Music Band did perform inside the temple and the bearers lifted the thrones. As is now traditional, the throne bearers were members of CD Mijas.
Reactions
“It has been a very beautiful celebration because the procession
had to be held in a more intimate manner inside the church; with the soul of Mijas, we are starting this great week for Christians together”, noted Mata.
“Palm Sunday is always a little more special because the children come, they carry the throne, and the Eucharist is also made more engaging for them; it is a very lovely day”, added the Popular Party councillor Mari Francis Alarcón
“I would like to thank the Brotherhood of El Nazareno, CD Mijas, who carry the Pollinica, and all Christians for their work, and wish them a good Holy Week”, said Vox spokesperson, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson, who also referred to the “excitement and joy” with which Christians experience these days. For his part, PMP spokesperson Juan Carlos Maldonado also said: “We begin Holy Week with great devotion and expectation, and although the weather has not been on our side, we do have that human warmth that the people of Mijas always provide, today with the children as protagonists and the Town Hall offering its support, as it must be”.
PSOE councillor Josele González also had words of praise and gratitude for those working “collectively” on this Palm Sunday, which “marks the start of Holy Week in Mijas. The truth is that it is a tremendous joy to arrive in the village and see it full of people, and I am convinced that it
is going to be a success, in terms of tourism, culture, tradition and, of course, religion”.
“‘La Pollinica’ is always a very moving and endearing procession, so I thank everyone who contributes their bit for days like today and for the days that await us,” said the spokesperson for Ciudadanos Mijas, José Carlos Martín
Finally, on behalf of the organising brotherhood, the Archconfraternity of Jesús Nazareno, Alberto Moreno explained that “we were responsible for the preparation of the throne and the assembly of the image, and we did not go out because safety is the most important thing”. “All things considered, it has been a lovely experience and I hope to repeat it next year”, summarised the bearer Miguel Padilla
SENTIMENT AND TRADITION IN THE SEASIDE
As is traditional, the morning began in the Plaza del Torreón, where the parish priest Fernando Luque blessed the palms. Back at the Parish of Santa Teresa, a very well-attended Holy Mass was celebrated. “There are so many people and I am very happy to celebrate and experience the same faith with this beautiful community of La Cala and Calahonda”, said the parish priest, who was experiencing his first Palm Sunday here.
JOY AND DEVOTION IN LAS LAGUNAS
The parish of San Manuel González was filled with joy during a well-attended event, with the children from the catechism classes taking centre stage. The parish priest, Manuel Jiménez, blessed the olive branches and celebrated Mass, marking the start of Holy Week in Las Lagunas. “It is a day full of joy, with many worshippers looking forward to the big week, Passion Week”, noted the elder brother of the Brotherhood of Jesús Vivo, Bosco Rivas

Holy Week 2026. Holy Tuesday
A breath of faith
TINGES LAS LAGUNAS IN PURPLE
Our Father ‘Jesús de Medinaceli’ did not miss his appointment with the people of Mijas on a Holy Tuesday blessed with clear and starry skies, perfect for accompanying the Lord of Las Lagunas
After a time of reflection inside the church, where the parish priest, Manuel Jiménez, the members of the parish group with their leader Felicidad Segurado, the throne bearers, and the rest of the participants in the procession prayed to the Lord for good fortune and protection, at 20:00 hours, right on time, ‘Jesús de Medinaceli’ set out to reunite with his people. The departure was marked by the national anthem, performed by the Las Lagunas Musical Group.
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), highlighted the excellent spring temperature for enjoying this event of faith and praised the “silent work carried out throughout the year by the various brotherhoods, confraternities and parish groups”. In this regard, Mata emphasised that the main objective is “to continue upholding tradition and customs and, above all, to keep very much in mind all the people who have contributed to our being here today”. Mata praised the great devotion that the Las Lagunas district has for Our Father ‘Jesús de Medinaceli’, highlighting the importance of the younger generations taking up the baton and encouraging both residents and visitors to stay and enjoy Mijas Holy Week.
Solemnity and respect
Under a clear and welcoming sky, after the wind had died down, the statue by the sculptor José Dueñas, created in 2009, wore its traditional
purple tunic, representing Jesus Christ as a prisoner after being judged by Pontius Pilate. The image bore the crown of thorns and three golden ‘potencias’ (rays of light), and numerous faithful accompanied Jesus on his silver throne, carried by 36 men and women and beautifully adorned with red carnations and rosemary. The procession stood out at all times for its profound solemnity, the absolute respect of the public, and the emotion palpable in the atmosphere.
For his part, the second deputy mayor,, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), who was unable to be present in La Laguna as he was representing the Town Hall at the procession of the ‘Cofradía del Rocío’ in Málaga (an honorary sister brotherhood of our town), noted that “Holy Week is one of the most special times in our municipality, where tradition, faith and sentiment unite”. Maldonado wished to send his best wishes to the residents and show his deep gratitude to the religious groups because “it is thanks to all the brotherhoods, confraternities, and every person behind them, those who are there all year
round, often unseen, preparing every detail, that Holy Week in Mijas is so special. Without them, none of this would be the same; they keep our traditions alive and ensure they look even more beautiful each year”.
Inherited devotion
That spirit to which the municipal representatives referred was clearly reflected in the large number of children participating, with up to 75 children wearing the ‘nazareno’ robes, escorted also by the elegance of the women in ‘mantillas’. The throne, gently swayed with affection, was carried on the shoulders of residents who share a deeply rooted devotion, as is the case with entire families who decide to carry the Christ year after year because, as they say, He is their Christ of Las Lagunas and something truly special to them.
The first deputy mayor, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), also present in the procession, wished to thank the parish group of ‘Nuestro Padre Jesús de Medinaceli’ for being “the architects of
this procession” which is prepared “over many months”. Dawson applauded their work in sharing the Christian faith with all residents and extended his thanks to the rest of the brotherhoods in Las Lagunas.
In the same vein, the councillor for Festivities and Traditions, Silvia Marín (PP) congratulated Felicidad Segurado for her “great work, not only with faith and devotion throughout the year, but also because each year we see more people participating in the procession”. Marín emphasised that, although the image represents a moment prior to the crucifixion, a lot of life and joy is perceived in the procession thanks to “the support that the Cristo de Medinaceli has had since it was established in Las Lagunas”.
The PSOE spokesperson, Josele González, although he did not
attend the procession alongside other members of his party, wished to “thank our brotherhoods and confraternities for the great work they perform during these days, bringing our ‘cofrade’ heritage closer to visitors and residents”. González added that, “despite Ana Mata claiming that the streets of Mijas would be empty these days, I am sure that Holy Week in our municipality will be a success, just like the departure of J’esús de Medinaceli’, which has painted Las Lagunas purple”. Finally, the spokesperson for Ciudadanos Mijas, José Carlos Martín, was also unable to attend but sent an invitation from his party: “We encourage all tourists and visitors coming to the Costa del Sol at this time to visit Mijas, because our town’s festivities and traditions this Holy Week will certainly not disappoint them”.

Mijas highlights as a “tourism driver”
Hotel occupancy is expected to reach approximately 79% during this holiday period
Report by Ed. Dept. / Design: I.M.
The councillor for Tourism in Mijas, Francisco Jerez (Vox), highlights the town’s Holy Week as one of the primary “levers for tourism attraction”. This comes at the start of a season marked, as the councillor noted, “by a slowdown in domestic demand and a decline in occupancy forecasts across the Costa del Sol”. “We are facing a Holy Week where, despite favourable weather forecasts, the destination is seeing how external factors, such as rail connectivity issues, are impacting visitor arrivals, particularly

The head of Tourism also emphasised the importance of continuing to strengthen the local offering. “Mijas has the capacity to remain a competitive destination thanks to its diversity, its identity, and its ability to provide unique experiences. Our Holy Week is one of them; it combines tradition, culture and a privileged setting that sets us apart”, asserted Jerez.
Furthermore, the councillor expressed his gratitude for the efforts of the brotherhoods and confraternities, as well as the in-

In light of the hotel occupancy figures forecast for the coming days, the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez, stated that “in Mijas we continue to work to position ourselves as an attractive destination throughout the year, FOCUSING ON QUALITY, DIVERSIFICATION AND PROMOTION IN INTERNATIONAL MARKETS, WHICH ARE RESPONDING POSITIVELY”. Finally, Jerez concluded by extending an open invitation to discover Mijas during this period, “here you will find tradition, hospitality and a destination prepared to offer a complete experience, regardless of any difficulties that may arise from external factors”.

According to data from the
hotel sector, forecasts point to an occupancy rate in Mijas of around 79% during the central days of the holiday. This is in line with other destinations on the Costa del Sol, although below the levels recorded in previous years. “These figures reflect the need to continue advocating
for investment and improvements in key infrastructure, because tourism does not sustain itself: it needs planning, connectivity and institutional support”, Jerez added.

On Monday, the first of their five-day stay in Entrerríos, the children received a visit from the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor for the Youth Hostel, Melisa Ceballos (PP), who accompanied the children on a tour of the facilities. Both highlighted the role of this centre as a space for education and community living. The mayoress emphasised that “we have 45 boys and girls, including children on the inclusion programme, who receive special careL; however, we also ensure they integrate naturally and can share everything with the other children in a setting as idyllic as this”.

The La Cala Lions Club organised the event, which also featured a market, children’s workshops and a batucada
For the second consecutive year, La Cala hosted the Second Waiters’ Race last weekend. I was a thoroughly charming and entertaining event organised by the Lions Club, in which professionals from the catering industry had to demonstrate their skill with a tray. Running was strictly forbidden; therefore, participants had to walk as nimbly as possible, maintaining their balance without spilling anything.
The Club’s president, Anita Humphreys, explained that “it has been a very difficult race but there are a lot of people here, a great many. TALKS
The Arts Society has scheduled two new lectures for April
F.M.R. T The Arts Society Costa del Sol has organised two new illustrated talks on art and culture for this April. The first event will take place on Monday 13th at 16:30 hours at the Salón Varietés Theatre in Fuengirola, where the speaker Helen Sijsling will explore the history and secrets of famous Freemason artists.
The ticket price for non-members is 10 euros, while admission is free for members. The following day, Tuesday 14th, at 10:30 hours, the event will move to the Danish Club in Mijas. On this occasion, Sijsling will give a talk entitled ‘Magical Melilla and Ceuta: two Spanish cities in North Africa’. For this second talk, admission
costs 10 euros for the general public and 8 euros for members of the society.
I.P. On Saturday 28th of March, the Mijas Danish Club held a grand party to welcome spring and the good weather, preparing one of the country’s traditional dishes for all attendees: roast suckling pig. The event, which brought together numerous members of the Danish community, was marked by a festive and family atmosphere. “We have traditional Danish food, drink, music, and everything necessary for people to enjoy the afternoon, because today the weather is wonderful, neither too hot nor too cold, just like a summer day in Denmark”, said Lasse Andersen , the club’s president. The Mijas Danish Club has
been active here in our town for more than 40 years and is currently taking on new challenges under the leadership of its president, including attracting the younger Danish community. “We are thinking of organising new activities, taking advantage of the fact that we have tennis courts and a swimming pool here at the headquarters, so we are looking for ways to attract Danes of all ages, as it is true that the vast majority are currently retirees”, he stated.
Three artists performed at the party with songs in Danish, English, and Spanish, thus reinforcing the multicultural nature of the gathering.
