The event was presided over by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied by members of the local council and representatives from the Mijas Civil Guard Post, the National Police, the Local Police, as well as numerous social and community groups who also attended, including Afesol, AFA Mijas, Sembrando Sonrisas, Cudeca, Cepyme and the AECC. those building an “inclusive, supportive and ambitious” Mijas, said Mata in her speech, “people and entities committed to challenges such as self-improvement, solidarity and empathy within their own spheres of influence, whether in work, family, friendship or in duty”, she added.
‘Mijas, alma andaluza’ awards
The first edition of these awards honoured CP Mijas Patinaje, Carlos Caravias, Idiliq Group,
Marcel Lunar, Alba Aragón and the Mayordomos de San Antón Association. The evaluation committee created for this purpose by the Mijas Town Hall to select the winners, which met on the 9th of February, based its decision to honour the Mijas Skating Sports Club (CP Mijas Patinaje) for its significant sporting, educational and social impact, currently integrating 39 girls and promoting essential values such as effort, perseverance and discipline.
Regarding Carlos Caravias, the award was granted in recognition of “his sustained contribution to local literary life as an author based in Mijas and an active participant in the local cultural programme”. The Mayordomos de San Antón Association (San Antón Stewards) received the accolade “for their constant work in preserving and promoting the San Antón festivities, one of the town’s most iconic traditions”.

Taking advantage of the 28th of February commemoration, Caravias recalled that Andalusia appears in many of his writings, “also as a cry of dissent and indignation at the disregard and exploitation our land has suffered since the era known as the Reconquista”.
The Idiliq hotel group was honoured for its contribution to the local economy.
“We feel deeply connected to the way of feeling, living and sharing the values of Mijas, which also uphold and define our corporate journey”, said Juana Gil, the group’s Human Resources Director, from the lectern.

Repairs to the section of the Coastal Path damaged by storms began on Tuesday 3rd
Work to restore the section of the Coastal Path destroyed by the continuous sea storms in January and early February has already begun, as announced on Thursday 5th by the councillor for Infrastructure and Works, Juan José Torres Trella (PP).
The Mijas Town Hall has awarded the emergency contract to the company VGC Global, SL, for a total of 222,931.61 euros and a completion period of 60 calendar days.
The main objective is to restore stability to the collapsed section in the El Capricho area to ensure user safety, prevent further erosion or new collapses, and recover the coastline’s functionality as a public space, according to the councillor on Friday 27th. Although that section of the path has been closed and signposted since the initial damage was detected prior to the collapse of the

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), pointed out the “evident damage” to the local economy caused by the stoppage of the high-speed rail service on the Málaga-Madrid line, and urged the central government to speed up works to restore competitive travel times as soon as possible. Furthermore, Mata has joined the appeal made by the president of the Málaga Provincial Council and Tourism Costa del Sol, Francisco Salado, for the Spanish Government to provide an aid plan for the province’s main economic sectors. According to the local executive, this would “alleviate millions in losses’ cau-

With only a few weeks until the start of the peak tourist season, the mayoress noted the provincial hotel association (Aehcos) has already warned of an alarming drop in bookings for the year’s first high-demand holiday period. “We are talking about losses running into the hundreds of millions of euros, and a drop in sales of more than 35%”, she said.
The mayoress of Mijas has expressed her regret that THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT, THE COMPETENT AUTHORITY FOR RESTORING THE BEACHES AFFECTED BY THE STORMS IN DECEMBER, JANUARY, AND FEBRUARY, IS STILL IN THE PROCESS OF ANALYSING THE SITUATION and has not yet begin the necessary work to stabilise the coastline.
Lack of competitiveness
“There are booking cancellations, and competing destinations in the Mediterranean will have an advantage. There is clear damage to the reputation of the Costa del Sol as a destination and the longer we remain disconnected, the more we will suffer the consequences. The government must accelerate the work as much as possible. We are talking about jobs
and income for local businesses”, the mayoress insisted. For his part, the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), emphasised that “Easter marks the real start of the high season, and any uncertainty regarding connectivity immediately affects visitors’ decision-making”, adding that “when the country’s main railway axis ceases to be competitive, tou-

On Sunday 1st of March, the third and final day of the ‘Estrellas de Iberia’ International Festival was held in La Cala. In its first edition in Mijas, this event brought together nearly 600 participants from various countries, with the proceeds going to the NGOs Sembrando Sonrisas and Diksha España.
According to Petya Evtimova, the festival organiser and manager of the Bulgarian Cultural Centre, the event arrived in Mijas this year after touring different cities in Europe, “and we are very grateful to everyone who participated, almost 600 (400 from Bulgaria), to presented their art and culture, something that unites all countries”.
Another of the festival’s collaborators, Aída Herrera, also highlighted that “this year we secu-

Over the three days of events, held in La Cala on February 21st and 26th and March 1st, this festival gave us the opportunity to learn more about the folklore of Argentina, Romania and Bolivia, and especially Bulgaria, is characterised by its high energy, jumps, and even shouts. “I lived in Spain as a child and even then I performed the traditional dances of my country, which are very cheerful and colourful. I love them”, said María Elena Dimitrova, one Bulgarian participant.
Regarding Bulgaria, the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP), noted that “there are many Bulgarians who contribute to our
development and growth, because we have becone such an attractive destination. In fact, it is no coincidence that almost 40 per cent of the population of Mijas was born abroad. We are very proud of that”.
Participation of the UP Spain was also represented at the event by various dance groups from the UP led by teachers Víctor Rojas and Juan Jesús Leiva. Among other styles, they performed ‘alegrías’, ‘bulerías’, ‘pasodobles’ and folk songs. “They have demonstrated the artistry of Andalusia, where flamenco is so prominent and loved by our foreign residents”, said UP councillor Silvia Marín (PP). She also praised the initiative, “which, in addition to its charitable nature, has shown that culture is a great bridge between countries and knows no borders”.

The married couple, José Muñoz and Olga Romero, remain in the Emirati city with their three daughters, aged 14, 12 and 9, unable to take the flight back to Spain, which was scheduled for the night of Sunday 1st of March. “We were in Abu Dhabi and moved to Dubai thinking that being close to the airport would give us peace of mind, but days are passing and there is very little movement”, Muñoz told Mijas Comunicación on Tuesday 3rd of March.
The family is living through the uncertainty from their hotel.
Mijeños stranded in the War leaves numerous United Arab Emirates
“Technically we are safe here but our safety depends on a missile shield working”, the father acknowledged, admitting that the embassy has offered reassurance by stating that the Emirati defence system is “one of the most advanced in the world”. Faced with this deadlock, they have even considered alternatives such as organising a land evacuation to neighbouring Oman, where Muscat airport remains operational. “We don’t want to flee in panic, but we believe more could be done”, Muñoz stated. At the time of going to press, the family remains stranded and “awaiting a repatriation flight that the em-
bassy says could be very soon; we are just waiting for it to be safe”, Muñoz said.
“You could hear missiles tearing through the air, I even managed to record two of them. One was intercepted, but the other did hit the ground because we heard the explosion. I think it was the one that fell on the Palm Jumeirah”, says the young woman, who lives in that well-known coastal area.
“The worst situation of my life” A similar sense of anguish is recounted by Noelia Belmonte, a 23-year-old woman from Mijas with whom Mijas Comunicación has also been in contact and who was in Dubai completing a master’s internship when the attacks began. Her testimony reflects the panic experienced on the 28th of February, when what initially sounded like construction noises turned out to be the first bombings of the city.
More than 60 horses take part in the new equestrian ride along the Gomenaro River
The Department of
Livestock and the Peña Caballista have launched this new initiative, which took place on Saturday 28th
C.M. The Department of Livestock and the Peña Caballista de Mijas have launched a new equestrian event, a ride that runs along part of the Gomenaro River. On Saturday 28th, between 60 and 70 horses took part in this initiative, which concluded with a day of fellowship, including singing and dancing. “It is
our duty to champion these traditions”, stated the councillor for Livestock, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), who noted that Mijas, with more than 2,300 registered horses, has a long equestrian tradition. “It is a world we must not allow to be lost”, said the councillor, adding: “Now that we see that there is a new momentum from the Peña
Caballista to create new routes and events, they will always find us by their side”.
Ana María Guerrero is the new president of the Peña Caballista de Mijas. “This is a new day for the Peña Caballista, and thanks to the Town Hall’s help in organising it, we have been able to hold this event”, said the head
According to Belmonte, the situation worsened in the early hours of the morning when missile alerts sounded on mobile phones across the city, ordering people to move away from windows and seek shelter on the lower floors. “It was a moment of absolute panic, the worst experience of my life. Everyone was running, screaming, with bags... I did the same, I grabbed a bag with my passport, water, biscuits and we headed to the ground floor”, she recalls.
The night turned into a nightmare when, amid the confusion and lack of official information, a drone hit a hotel opposite her accommodation. “We saw the orange smoke and started running to take cover in the corridors. We couldn’t sleep all night, we could hear military jets and explosions, it was terrifying”, she adds.
Now that her internship is over, she only wants to return to Spain. “There’s nothing left for me to do

here. Flights are slowly resuming, but only a few. I’m alone, I have no one, and I just want to go back to Spain to be with my family and end this nightmare”, confesses Belmonte, while acknowledging the effectiveness of the local armed forces in intercepting most of the projectiles.
Follow-up from Mijas Faced with this complex situation, which affects an estimated 30,000 Spanish citizens in the region, the Town Hall is monitoring the situation of its residents. The mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), contacted the Muñoz-Romero family directly to check on their well-being, confirming via social media that they are safe.
The mayoress assured that she is aware that “the Andalusian Regional Government is making arrangements to ensure that Andalusians trapped in the conflict zone can return home soon and in complete safety”, expressing her hope that their return will take place as soon as possible.
of the new board, who clarified that the intention is for this ride to become “official” annual event.
The route offered participants a lush green landscape following the recent rains and a flowing Gomenaro River. The starting point was, as is traditional, El Es-
parragal Park. The ride concluded at El Esparragal with a communal meal, a performance by the Expresión dance academy, and live music from Fátima Burgos and her group, Regalo.
