to prioritise social housing and employment The Town Hall streamlines procedures

The Local Government Board approves a new directive to eliminate unnecessary processes and reinforce transparency

The Mijas Town Hall will facilitate urban planning procedures through a new directive, already approved by the Local Government Board, which prioritises social housing, the modernisation of the hotel sector, the installation of renewable energies, electricity self-consumption, and job creation within the municipality.

This was announced on Thursday 19th by the mayoress of the city, Ana Mata (PP), who reported that this modification is based on the Junta de Andalucía’s decree-law on administrative simplification and rationalisation, which aims to streamline procedures and eliminate unnecessary paperwork. “Mijas is taking another step forward to make it easier for citizens and

businesses to obtain licences, carry out projects and make investments for the benefit of the entire municipality”, she said.

velopments; the renovation and modernisation of hotel facilities to upgrade their category; works for the thermal use of renewable energy in homes; electricity selfconsumption of up to 100 kW, or electric vehicle charging points.

Priority projects

This new framework classifies as priority those files related to public or private social housing de-

The new directive, already in effect, seeks to improve the processing of licences with a guarantee of legal certainty, transparency and administrative efficiency, “for the benefit of citizens, Mijas’ economic activity, and Urban Planning staff”, she added.

Public or private facilities will also be a priority, as will projects that contribute to the economic and social growth of the municipality (those with an execution budget exceeding€5 million euros or involving the employment of more than 50 workers); and projects that enhance architectural quality by showcasing historical or contemporary heritage, maintaining the cultural identity of Mijas through their integration into the land or landscape.

Furthermore, any works or activities that, due to their general strategic, social, economic, or tourist nature, are declared as priority processing by the Local Government Board will also be included. This renewed procedure will begin with the ve-

rification of the integrity of the application and the corresponding urban development project. If the documentation is incomplete or has formal defects, the applicant will be requested only once to complete the file within ten working days. Once the documentation is complete, the file will be admitted for processing, and independent tasks will be assigned for the issuance of: technical-urban planning reports; a report on the availability of necessary urban services; a technical report on installations; and a legal report.

These reports will conclude with a reasoned ruling, which may be favourable; conditionally favourable; a request for further documentation; or unfavourable. As a result of this process, licences will be granted or denied.

The mayoress announced that works may begin once the licence conditions have been met; the execution project and the responsible declaration have been submitted; the health and safety study has been submitted; and when the land representation has been verified in cases where it borders plots designated for public use.

its Blue Trail Flag Mijas retains, for another year, for the Coastal Path

It highlights the commitment of municipalities to restoring and preserving trails that promote environmental education and sustainable recreation

Ed. Dept./ Cristina Bejarano

Good news for Mijas: the municipality has once again been awarded the Blue Trail flag. This distinction is granted annually by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac) and, in Mijas’ case, is awarded to the Coastal Path.

The municipality has once again received this recognition, which highlights the commitment of municipalities and local authorities to restoring and preserving trails and routes that promote environmental education and the sustainable use of our natural surroundings.

REQUIREMENTS FOR

the award retaining

Blue Trail

The Blue Trail Award, launched in 2011 as a pilot programme for twelve educational coastal trails that uniquely linked Blue Flag beaches, highlights the commitment of municipalities and local authorities to restoring and showcasing trails and paths that promote environmental education and the sustainable use of our natural surroundings.

Mijas has now held this recognition for ten years. To achieve this, the municipality meets the criteria and indicators assessed by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), which are categorised into four key areas:

Trail characteristics and layout

Information, signage and infrastructure

Conservation and management of natural and cultural heritage

Public use of the trails

in the natural environment.

“We more than meet all the standards analysed to obtain this distinction. This is the result of everyone’s hard work, as we are committed 365 days a year to maintaining the best possible facilities”

The

municipality

Mijas has held this distinction since 2016, consistently meeting a series of indicators and criteria divided into four categories evaluated by the organisation: trail characteristics and layout; information, signage and infrastructure; conservation and management of natural and cultural heritage; and public use of the trails.

Requirements

The Mijas Coastal Path is a pedestrian and cycle route that runs parallel to the Mediterranean from La Cala to the municipal boundary of Marbella. In addition to being a key link, it offers great scenic value, allowing visitors to learn about the characteristics of the fauna and flora of the area through the information panels located at various points along the route.

In this regard, the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), recalled some of the criteria that the ADEAC considers when awarding and renewing these distinctions. These include accessibility, the presence of information panels, the promotion of educational and environmental awareness activities, and the protection of underwater biodiversity.

“We more than meet all the standards analysed to obtain this

distinction. This is the result of everyone’s hard work, as we are committed 365 days a year to maintaining the best possible facilities”, the councillor stated.

Environmental commitment

The Blue Trail programme rewards and recognises the conservation and restoration of paths and trails that have been transformed into valuable resources for environmental interpretation and education, as well as for sustainable recreation, sport, and tourism

Blue Trails is an exclusive international initiative of the ADEAC, which was launched in 2011 as a pilot programme for twelve educational coastal trails that uniquely linked Blue Flag beaches. Over the last decade, it has been supported by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition.

The association is also responsible for other programmes such as Blue Flag, Eco-Schools, Young Reporters for the Environment and Green Key. It should be noted that the municipality currently holds five Blue Flags for its beaches and a Blue Centre certification for the Torreón in La Cala.

failure to allocate funds to combat Asian seaweeds Mijas denounces central Government’s

The Town Hall criticises the fact that necessary aid is reaching the Caribbean instead of the municipality and the Costa del Sol

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), reported on Tuesday 17th that the Spanish government has not allocated the funds that the Town Hall unanimously requested in September 2025 to combat the Asian seaweed plague on the municipality’s coastline and the Costa del Sol. The mayoress lamented that, by contrast, the State will allocate one million euros to the Caribbean Sea for the effective management of sargassum, another invasive species of seaweed in America.

The government team explained that this was confirmed in a report published by the Spanish Agency for International Deve-

lopment Cooperation (AECID), part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in November 2025, “just two months after the municipal plenary session requested a state fund to tackle the growing

threat of Asian seaweed in Mijas”. “We have no record of such a fund being created to date”, said the mayoress.

According to the Executive, official information regarding

“This obligation that we have to assume alone directly impacts other budget items; to this, we must add the damaged image of our tourism sector, the losses of affected companies, the damage to the fishing fleet and, ultimately, the general harm to Mijas as a municipality” Mayoress of

the AECID’s contribution to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) “for the effective management and sustainable use of sargassum in Latin America and the Caribbean” can be found on the AECID website. “We have no news of funds for Mijas, but we do for the Caribbean”, the mayoress lamented.

Beach cleaning

In 2024 and 2025, the Mijas Town Hall allocated a total of 1.2 million euros of municipalfunds to cleaning Asian seaweed from the beaches. Specifically, in 2025

alone, more than 2,600 tonnes were removed from the coastline, according to data provided on Tuesday 17th by the Beaches Department, and this amount is expected to increase considerably in 2026.

The mayoress recalled that this problem is not new, as in 2022 the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) urged the Spanish Government to implement a national plan to help coastal municipalities deal with the invasion of Asian seaweed and, specifically, to provide financial support for the additional costs they face.

Rural Areas repairs roads in Mijas to ensure accessibility and safety

Editorial Department

On Monday 16th, the councillor for Rural Areas, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), reported on the work being carried out on various rural roads in the municipality, in response to the needs expressed by residents and the issues detected by the municipal department itself. Belmonte explained that “the Rural Areas Department is working continuously on the roads that show the most deterioration, prioritising sections that directly affect the safety and accessibility of residents”.

In the La Alquería area, work has focused exclusively on the removal of landslides from the road, with the aim of ensuring

safety and restoring normal traffic flow. “We have acted quickly to clear the affected sections and avoid unnecessary risks to residents who travel along these roads daily”, he said.

Work is also being carried out on the Gamonal road up to its junction with La Cala Golf, repairing the road surface at both the entrance and exit of the road.

The councillor stressed that “this is a strategic point for many residents and workers in the rural area, so it was necessary to take action to improve access and prevent further deterioration”.

Work also continues on the

main road in Puerto de los Gatos, where repairs to the road surface that began several weeks ago are being completed. “Our aim is not to limit our actions to oneoff interventions, but to provide continuity to the work until these sections are in optimal condition”, he stated.

Finally, the department is carrying out repairs to ditches and crossings in the Atalaya area, a fundamental action to improve water drainage and prevent future damage to the road surface. “The maintenance of ditches

M.J.G. Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in many ways, and the La Cala Lions Club did so with the Memory Tree and a charity market to raise funds to continue their altruistic work.

“We organise this commemorative day for people who are no longer with us, so if you have lost a loved one, it is a way to remember them, but it is also part of our dementia and Alzheimer’s support club”, explained the president of the La Cala Lions Club, David Kay

“This is our Valentine’s Day ceremony. Many people are alone on that day because their partners have passed away, their families are no longer there, and we even remember our

pets”, explained Sandy Tavendale, secretary of the club, who explained that “the Memory Tree is for people to write messages to their loved ones, hang them on the tree and then our Alzheimer’s Club turns them into a mosaic that we keep in our shop”.

“The Lions Club, together with the Mijas Foreigners’ De-
