Christmas in Mijas

Experience one of

most exciting

seasons

This year, the municipality will have three different Christmas light displays, featuring 3.8 million LED lights

Report by Ed. Dept./ Design: Isabel Merino / Translation: C.Arroyo

Mijas is already gearing up for the “most ambitious Christmas in its history”. This is how the mayoress of the town, Ana Mata (PP), described it, explaining that this year’s artistic lighting will feature 3.8 million LED lights, representing an increase compared to last year. In addition, as the main new feature, there will not be just a single switch-on, but three: in Mijas Pueblo on the 3rd, in La Cala on the 4th and in Las Lagunas on the 5th, a measure designed to ensure that each town centre plays a leading role.

“The aim is for everyone to feel that Christmas is already upon us and to enjoy it in the best possible way, because the-

se are very traditional and very special dates and, above all, very family-oriented. This government team works for and on behalf of families, while always putting Mijas on the map for those looking for something special at Christmas”, added Mata. Until this year, the switching on of the artistic lighting rotated, taking place in the village one year, Las Lagunas another, and La Cala the following year. However, due to its importance, there will now be three switchons on consecutive days.

Likewise, the lighting in each district has been improved, with 20 new or reinforced areas in Mijas Pueblo, 15 in Las Lagunas and 12 in La Cala, totalling 47 areas.

“Christmas is a very special time for everyone, which is why we wanted each district to shine on its own. We want these festivities to be unforgettable and we have put all our efforts into making this happen, with the help of all the people of Mijas”, explained the mayoress. Finally, Ana Mata expressed her wish that “this Christmas in Mijas will encourage everyone to

An innovative show audiovisual

The Town Hall has announced that, as a new feature this year, each town centre will host an “innovative audiovisual show. This is something completely new, designed to add an extra attraction to the already charming Christmas celebrations in Mijas”.

The shows will take place in the Virgen de la Peña Square (Pueblo), La Cala Boulevard (La Cala de Mijas) and Mijas Avenue (Las Lagunas) at three different times: 19, 20:30 and 22 hours. The mayoress did not want to reveal any details about these activities, although she did say that they are sure to surprise the public. In addition, each district will have its own programme to meet the requests of local residents.

Mijas receives the after achieving the highest score ever recorded in Spain Green Flag

The effort made this summer resulted in 727 tonnes of glass being recovered and an estimated saving of 70,000 euros for the Town Hall

Mijas has been awarded the Ecovidrio Green Flag with the highest score ever achieved in the ten-year history of the campaign, placing it ahead of the 181 participating municipalities across Spain.

During the summer months of July and August, 727 tonnes of glass were recovered in the municipality, representing a continuous year-on-year increase since Mijas began participating in the campaign.

This volume of recycling has resulted in an estimated direct saving of 70, 000 euros for the municipal coffers over the summer period alone, which would otherwise have had to be paid by residents in the form of landfill tax.

National Unprecedented Economic Residents’

The success of the collection is attributed to the involvement of the public and, in particular, the hospitality sector, whose participation has been almost 100%, demonstrating a high level of commitment to civic well-being.

In recognition of its leadership, the municipality hosted a special clean-up day at El Chaparral beach , where 90 kilos of waste were removed with the help of students from the IES Sierra de Mijas secondary school.

On Thursday 27th, the Mijas Town Hall officially received the Ecovidrio Green Flag, after becoming the municipality with the highest score ever achieved in Spain within the Green Flag Movement this summer. The presentation took place at the institutional headquarters of the Association of Municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar, in a ceremony in which Ecovidrio highlighted the historic nature of Mijas’ achievement.

The event was attended by representatives from the municipalities recognised in this edition, La Línea de la Concepción, Algeciras, Barbate, Rota, Fuengirola and Lepe, as well as the Mijas delegation headed by the first deputy mayor, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), and the councillor for Street Cleaning, Eloy Belmonte (Vox). Also present were the president of the Association of Municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar, Susana Pérez, and the president of the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, Manuel Cardeña Belmonte received the flag on behalf of the municipality, emphasising that the achievement “be-

longs to all the people of Mijas”.

The councillor highlighted the joint involvement of the Beaches Department, Operational Services, Mijas Communication, schools, neighbourhood associations, taxi drivers and especially the hospitality sector, whose collaboration “has been almost a hundred per cent”.

Belmonte recalled that glass recycling has meant “a direct saving of around 70,000 euros in the summer months” and stated that this Green Flag “is not an end point, but an incentive to continue improving year after year”.

For his part, the area manager of Ecovidrio, Jesús Gutiérrez, explained that in the ten years of the campaign, “there has never been a score like that of Mijas” and highlighted that the city has placed itself “well ahead” of the 181 participating municipalities nationwide.

Gutiérrez praised the coordination between the Town Hall, the hospitality industry and the public, highlighting the environmental impact of the collective effort through the reduction of emissions, energy savings and the lower extraction of raw materials.

Similarly, the first deputy mayor, Cuevas Dawson, pointed out that this triumph “belongs to the

residents”, highlighting the civic awareness demonstrated this summer. He explained that this result is due to “the daily commitment of thousands of families, businesses and professionals who have made recycling a natural habit in our municipality, proving that when Mijas sets a goal, it achieves it”.

The Town Hall also congratulated La Línea de la Concepción, which was also awarded the Green Flag, as well as the municipalities that have renewed the accolade in this edition: Algeciras, Barbate, Rota, Fuengirola, and Lepe

Outstanding town in Spain

Mijas has been recognised as the most outstanding municipality in the country and has also received, as a prize, a special beach cleaning day in recognition of its environmental leadership. the activity, 90 kilos of small waste were removed and educational activities were carried out to raise awareness of the impact of cigarette butts, wipes and plastics on the coastline.

The Town Hall emphasises that this recognition sets out a clear roadmap for the coming years: more environmental education, greater collaboration with the community and management that continues to directly benefit residents. The aim, they stress, is to “protect the environment, reduce costs and make every step forward another source of pride for Mijas”.

Belmonte stressed that making recycling easier is not only a matter of convenience, but also an economic one. “All the glass we recycle represents a direct saving for the municipality, as what is deposited in the green container is not subject to the tax that is applied to ordinary waste”, he explained. The councillor also linked this reinforcement to the recent award of the Ecovidrio Green Flag, emphasising that achieving the highest score in Spain brings with it the “responsibility” of continuing to expand the recycling network in order to maintain this level of excellence.

25N: International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Mijas commemorates 25N by remembering the victims

On the Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the mayoress of the municipality, Ana Mata, called for inclusive care, education in equality and social awareness at an institutional event

Next to the monument erected a few years ago to commemorate this day, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), surrounded by part of the government team, the Local Police, the Civil Guard and women’s associations, and in the presence of members of the municipal corporation and representatives of other groups, released 42 balloons, one for each of the 39 women and their children who have died as victims of genderbased violence in Spain in 2025.

This took place after the mayoress read a manifesto in which she called for inclusive care, education in equality and social awareness as the duties of institutions in improving the fight against abuse and protecting victims, “ensuring that all women, wherever they live, have real access to resources for prevention, comprehensive support and protection against gender-based violence”.

In 2024 alone, the mayoress pointed out, “Spain recorded 199,094 reports of gender-based violence, 50 women murdered, according to the Report of the State Prosecutor’s Office, and more than 101,000 active cases in the VioGén system. So far in 2025, murders due to gender-based violence have already claimed the lives of 40 women, 12 of them in Andalusia, the region with the highest number of women murdered, and of these 12, five were in our province, Malaga”, she said.

To eradicate violence against women, Mata detailed proposals included in the manifesto, such as strengthening coverage in ru-

ral areas, promoting institutional cooperation, promoting education on sexual and emotional equality from an early age, and highlighting the toxic influence of the manosphere.

Mata also stressed that “it is essential for all institutions and society as a whole to unite in the effort to transform the structures that perpetuate sexism and inequality, with the necessary and firm involvement of men”, and concluded by saying that “once again, we join in the commemoration of the day against genderbased violence. We want to live in freedom, we want to live in safety, we want to live in equal conditions, men and women”.

These commitments have been taken up by the Family and

Equal Opportunities delegation headed by the mayoress herself, so that the Mijas Town Hall can make progress in eliminating violence against women. “Mijas has a municipal information centre for women, which is supported by the Junta de Andalucía and, thanks to the work of its information officers, psychologists and legal advisers, carries out important work”, Mata explained.

Assessments by the corporation Tuesday 25th was also a day of hope, with the belief that tomorrow can be better. This was expressed by PP councillor Daniel Gómez Teruel: “I hope that one day we will no longer have to commemorate this day because

abuse will have been eradicated and we will be able to live in real equality and with affection between different sexes and with mutual respect, because the principle of respect is the most beautiful thing a society can have”.

For his part, the spokesperson for Por Mi Pueblo in the Mijas Town Hall, Juan Carlos Maldonado, assured that “we cannot forget this issue, quite the contrary; we have to be very aware not only on one day, but 365 days a year, because it is a scourge. For the councillor, “there are many murders and I would like to express my full support for women and the feminist movement, which is defending this cause, a cause that is not about confrontation but about joining forces”.

Meanwhile, it was pointed out that we cannot let our guard down because since 2003, more than 1,300 women have been murdered in Spain at the hands of their partners or ex-partners.

“We are facing a scourge and sexist terrorism that is killing women simply because they are women”, said PSOE councillor Natalia Martínez, who went on to say that “today we are here at a memorial site in Las Lagunas, where a few years ago we were fortunate enough to place this ribbon in memory of all the women victims and also their children, and which can be seen as the refuge and support that we in Mijas offer to all women who are victims of gender-based violence”.

According to estimates by the Mijas Town Hall, around 7,000 people attended the pre-opening days of the Mijas Grand Park this past weekend, which increased its open area by including children’s areas, cycle lanes and paths within the facility.

This continues the capacity and safety tests of the site in the process being carried out by the Town Hall before its official opening. The pre-opening day coincided with the Spanish Parkour Championship, a sporting event that brought together around 3,000 people at these leisure facilities, according to sources from the organisation.

Infrastructure

The Mijas Town Hall will allocate 860,000 euros to refurbish and expand La Purísima cemetery in Mijas Pueblo. “The cemetery will be modernised to provide a better service and to have facilities befitting the importance of Mijas Pueblo”, explained the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP). The project plan, drawn up by Cadisa following a public tender, is already available to the Town Hall. Once the contract has been awarded, the completion period for the works will be six months, according to municipal sources.

The project includes the creation of a new building to house two wake rooms, a cold room, office space, a cremation oven and other ancillary uses, such as toilets, according to the councillor responsible for cemeteries, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP).

To this end, the administration room and the current toilet will be demolished. The chapel, which has an area of 64 m2, will be retained, and two larger wake rooms will be built, one measuring 45 square metres and the other 35.

The rear movement area of the space will also be expanded by means of a separate corridor, and a new 24-square-metre embalming room is planned.

Administrative area

In addition, the project includes a space for staff offices, where taxpayers and users can be attended to, equipped with a separate toilet with a shower and another separate room where a cremation oven will be located.

Moreover, the construction of another structure for the extension area is planned, which will have to take into account the roof slopes in order to align with the chapel roof. Likewise, the cremation oven area will have a hipped roof, adapting to the height of the toilet block.

euros in 2026 to draft the project for The executive will allocate 625,000 A high-resolution process centre

This was reported at the extraordinary plenary session convened at the request of the PSOE to debate the construction of a hospital in Mijas

The Mijas Town Hall’s budget for 2026 will include an item of 625,000 euros for the drafting of the project for the new high-resolution process centre planned for the municipality. This was announced on Wednesday 25th by the government team during the extraordinary plenary session.

The local executive explained that a 12,000-square-metre plot of land in Las Lagunas, near the IES Vega de Mijas secondary school, has already been set aside for this new healthcare facility proposed

by the ‘Junta de Andalucía’. In addition, an action protocol has been in place since last January, recalled the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), “in fact, in recent months we have had meetings with the Regional Ministry of Health to finalise the agreements and move forward with the drafting of the project for the new infrastructure”. Similarly, the councillor and spokesperson for the PP, Mario Bravo, added that “this agreement between the Junta and the Town Hall is divided into two parts and has been approved, pending the approval

waste and prunings, and causing noise disturbances.

of the 2026 budget, which we will do shortly, on the 17th of December”.

Health infrastructure

The new high-resolution process centre in Mijas would involve an investment of around 20 million euros and would take 22 months to complete. These figures were provided by the government team at the extraordinary plenary session called at the request of the socialist group, which demanded the construction of a hospital in the municipality. Socialist Josele González highlighted that

Likewise, 29 preventive checks have been carried out in strategic areas such as industrial areas, access roads to La Cala, residential sectors and the municipality’s entry and exit points, with the aim of checking documentation, supervising traffic and preventing offences on busy routes. The summary also includes seven reports related to accidents, three reports for offences against road safety, and one report concerning vehicle signalling.

In addition, there were ten reports for violations of Organic Law 4/2015, nine of which were for drug use in public places and one for disrespect towards officers.

Six arrests

In terms of particularly significant actions, the Local Police arrested six people with judicial search and arrest warrants during operations carried out on Avenida de Las Lagunas, Avenida de Andalucía and La Cala Boulevard, where five men and one woman were located. All were transferred to Civil Guard facilities to be brought before the courts.

this project is very necessary but, he stressed, has been stalled for more than two decades. “We should try to put aside for a moment the impositions made from above and think as councillors about what the city needs and what the residents are demanding”, insisted the socialist councillor during the presentation of this point, which was ultimately not approved in the vote. Regarding this motion, the councillor Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox) criticised it for being full of contradictions “because three of the five points are based on old land, reports that are not relevant, expired documentation and decisions that are not valid in

the current process and procedure”. For his part, the spokesperson for Ciudadanos, José Carlos Martín, described the Mijas hospital project as a collective political failure “despite the fact that it is essential from the point of view of mobility, population growth, health infrastructure and respect for the citizens of Mijas”. The councillor for Por Mi Pueblo, Juan Carlos Maldonado, reiterated the importance of pulling together on health issues, “and now we are going to have decent facilities that will ease the pressure on hospitals in the area, although we must not lose sight of the improvements needed in La Cala and Mijas Pueblo”.

The meeting brought together local and foreign entrepreneurs to promote collaborations and new business opportunities

On Saturday 22nd, La Salacia restaurant in La Cala hosted the presentation of an international business networking platform that aims to connect local entrepreneurs with foreign businesspeople, especially from Estonia, a country with a growing community on the Costa del Sol. The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange experiences, network and open up new opportunities.

This initiative plans to organise monthly meetings and seeks to strengthen the business fabric of Mijas, encouraging collaboration between businesses from different sectors and backgrounds. The organiser of this first meeting, Gertrud Lepik, highlighted the value of creating a strong working community on the Costa del Sol: “This platform is about bringing us together as businesspeople, supporting each other and connecting services. In Mijas, people of many nationalities live together and it is important to hold events where we can get to know each other”, she explained. “All entrepreneurs are welcome because these meetings give rise to great collaborations”, she continued, also thanking the Town Hall for its support, “which has been invaluable for us because whenever we have turned to them, whether for administrative or other matters, they have helped us one hundred per cent”.

Upcoming events

This meeting is not the end of the story: the business platform organised by La Salacia will continue to hold regular meetings to connect local entrepreneurs with international partners and promote economic development in the area.

The event was attended by Janno Pajo, deputy head of the Estonian Embassy in Madrid, who stressed the importance of the Costa del Sol for the Estonian community: “It is a very important area for us.

Although we do not have a consulate here in the south, these meetings strengthen our community. Our organisers are like ambassadors in this area and we are very proud of their work”, he said.

The councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP), also attended the presentation of this platform. For the councillor, “this meeting aims to be a gateway not only to Estonia, but also to other countries”, he said. For Mijas, according to Bravo, “Estonia is a benchmark in digitalisation and electronic management. We have a lot to learn from them and they also have much to learn from us”.

The La Cala Lions Club takes its campaign against diabetes to Mijas Pueblo

The Lions are also running the ‘Message in a Bottle’ campaign, which improves the care provided by healthcare professionals in emergencies

C.L./J.P. A group of volunteers from the La Cala Lions Club visited Mijas Pueblo on Friday 21st to raise awareness of their diabetes prevention campaign. The volunteer Lions carried out free glucose tests and also provided information about their new free campaign, ‘Message in a Bottle’.

The club’s diabetes group is made up of very active volunteers who work to promote the health of all Mijas residents and visitors. Their fight against diabetes, a widespread disease that affects more than 6 million people in Spain, is very important. It is

estimated that 11.1% of the adult population will have diabetes in 2025, according to the Internatio-

The 6th Malaga German Cinema Week comes to Mijas

This is the third year that the Town Hall has collaborated with Diario Sur in German on this event

M.F. With the aim of promoting German film culture, Mijas has hosted one of the screenings of the German Cinema Week in Malaga for the third consecutive year, this time in its sixth edition and organised by the German edition of Diario Sur. “Our main venue is the Cine Albéniz in Málaga, but this is the third time we have come to Mijas for a special screening, because Mijas is one of the most important centres for German residents on the Costa del Sol”, said the editor of Sur in German, Uwe Scheele , during the screening held in the plenary hall of Mijas Town Hall on the 27th.

The 6th German Cinema Week is supported by the Goethe Institute, the German Consulate in Málaga and the Mijas Foreigners’ Department, which offered the public free admission to the screening of the film ‘Impatience of the Heart’ by Lauro Cress. “For six years we have been collaborating with the German Consu-

are undiagnosed.

Loli Ruiz, secretary of the Mijas Pueblo Lions Club, which hosted the visit, highlighted the important work being done by the La Cala Lions against diabetes. “This group wants to raise awareness about diabetes prevention. They carry out tests to measure blood sugar levels so that it can be detected as early as possible. It’s a very good initiative”.

This group of volunteers against diabetes regularly sets up information tables in La Cala during the

late and the Goethe Institute to promote German culture. In Mijas, within the 40 per cent of the population that is foreign, there are 1,053 registered Germans, and this is the third year that our collaboration has grown, allowing us to include a screening of a new film”, said the councillor for Foreigners in Mijas, Mario Bravo (PP).

Screenings

will continue until the 29th of November

The screening in the municipality was also attended by the German Consul for Andalusia in Málaga, Franko Stritt, who highlighted the importance of this event: “German Cinema Week in Malaga is the biggest and most important event for us in German culture. I am very grateful to the Mijas Town Hall for lending us this venue and for bringing German culture to us”.

charity tables event. According to Ruiz, “these tests are carried out by several nurses from the group, so everyone can rest assured that they are perfectly controlled and there is no risk”.

In addition, the Lions Club is promoting its new campaign, ‘Message in a Bottle’, in which they are distributing free containers for storing personal and medical information in an easy-to-find place in case of emergency (the frige). If healthcare professionals enter the home, they can quickly obtain the patient’s medical information, such as whether they are diabetic or suffer from any allergies or other illnesses.
