renews its tourism quality and sustainability certifications

The beaches have nine ‘Q’ awards for Tourism Quality, five blue flags, the Blue Trail and the La Cala Watchtowers Blue Centre

Report by Editorial Department / Design: Isabel Merino

The 12-kilometre coastline of the municipality of Mijas has renewed its certifications for quality, sustainability, blue flags, Blue Trail, Blue Centre (the only one in the province of Malaga, the La Cala Watchtowers) and universal accessibility at the end of the 2025 campaign and ahead of the start of 2026.

In addition, the renewal of ISO 14001 (environmental certification) is scheduled for mid-month, as it is the only audit currently in progress.

This season

a blue flag has been awarded, specifically to Riviera Beach

The checks to renew these distinctions (external audits) are carried out by Aenor and the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac), a non-profit organisation recognised by the Spanish Government through the Ministry for Ecological Transition. The councillor responsible for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), praised in a press release the work carried out during the 2025 campaign, which has led to the renewal of certifications “that guarantee an optimal service to users of coastal facilities in terms of comfort, usability, safety, access and environmental care”.

Mijas once again offers ANDALUCÍA ORIENTA

The service is intended for unemployed people registered with the Andalusian Employment Service

Mijas is once again offering the Andalucía Orienta programme, until the 31st of July. The service is aimed at unemployed people registered with the Andalusian Employment Service and provides assistance to users on the ground floor of the Employment Promotion building in Las Lagunas. There, three technicians and an assistant will advise unemployed people in their active search for a job. The professionals are available by appointment, which must be requested by calling 952 66 75 46 or 951 26 02 83. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), assured that “in Mijas we are very committed to offering

the best opportunities to our residents. That is why we attach great importance to supporting the people of Mijas in identifying their skills when it comes to starting to build or reorient their professional future”, said the mayoress. For his part, the councillor for Employment Promotion, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), recalled that “we are once again implementing this programme with a grant of 128,500 euros from the awarding body, the Andalusian Employment Service, which depends on the Regional Ministry of Employment, Business and SelfEmployment. Four people have been hired in different positions, which allows us to meet the objectives established for the service,

3,450 hours of direct assistance or a group of between 800 and 1,000 users during this time”. The councillor also highlighted that “the programme is very ambitious and has a fundamental objective, which is the integration of unemployed Mijeños into the labour market”.

Guidance service

This programme provides citizens with a guidance service for the unemployed, the purpose of which is to support the active population in their integration into the labour market by advising them on their job search. These actions are carried out individually or in groups, taking into account the user’s profile, needs, and personal qualities

As of September this year, more than 120 residents of Mijas have joined the foundation’s care programmes

The Mijas Town Hall is set to reinforce its commitment to the Cudeca Foundation by launching new collaborations related to volunteer programmes, training and employability initiatives. These measures will complement the annual subsidy dedicated to home care for people with primarily oncological ailments.

This was announced on Tuesday 11th by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), after meeting with the manager of the Cudeca Foundation, Marisa Martín, to review the foundation’s activity in the municipality bet-

For her part, the mayoress recalled that in 2024, the Town Hall’s grant to the Cudeca Foundation amounted to 40,000 euros for activities related to home care for pa-

tients and their families. In this regard, she announced that under the new General Subsidy Ordinance, this amount could be increased depending on the project submitted, and encouraged Cudeca to expand its work proposals in areas that also promote training for employment. “The Town Hall renews its subsidy to Cudeca every year to guarantee resources that are then multiplied by the dedication and passion that employees and volunteers

Mata praised the work of the care teams, made up of doctors, nurses, psychologists and social workers, “who provide comprehensive care to people in need and also to their families, which is very important”. The Idiliq Foundation donates

10,000 euros to the AECC

The funds were raised during a campaign carried out in October among the company’s employees and volunteers

It is not just 10,000 euros, it is the commitment of the employees of Wyndham Grand Costa del Sol and the Idiliq Foundation to the fight against cancer. That is the amount of the cheque presented on Monday by the company to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC). The funds were raised through the campaign the organi-

sation launches every October to mark World Breast Cancer Day, in which employees actively participated by contributing 5,000 euros, an amount that Idiliq doubled for this cause. “It’s already a tradition for us, and our staff and volunteers embrace it with such enthusiasm and interest that it’s a pleasure to repeat it. In addition, a few years ago we made a commitment that the Idiliq Foundation would match

the amount raised by the various activities organised”, explained the foundation’s president, Juan Miguel Marcos

The AECC is grateful for the collaboration. “I am delighted, because I have only just taken up the position”, said Carmen Gómez, president of the AECC Mijas, who added that “it is impressive how so many people working here get involved”.

The presentation took place at the Wyndham Grand Costa del Sol, and was attended by numerous representatives from the foundation, the AECC, the Málaga Provincial Council, and the Mijas Town Hall, as well as many of the company’s employees. “I am very satisfied as mayoress, because we are not only contributing to the AECC, but also to the Idiliq Foundation”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who recalled that “together we are a big family working for the common good so that no one is in need”.

Alongside Mata, representing the government team, the councillor for Health, Marco Cortés (PP), and the councillor and deputy mayor of La Cala, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), were also present.

Struggle and hope

Last year, almost 1,300 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in Malaga, according to the vicepresident of the AECC Málaga, Alfredo Herrera. The association emphasises that every person facing cancer has a story of struggle and hope and that this type of collaboration is essential in order to stand up to the disease. “It is a great satisfaction and we are very grateful for Idiliq’s help because we know that they are always there”, said Herrera, who also pointed out that “in order to help people, we need financial resources: because we have psychologists, oncologists, doctors and all these things cost money. Without the support of companies and partners, it would be impossible”.

Mijas and Ecovidrio’s Green Flag recycling among young people campaign promote

After Mijas took first place in Spain in Ecovidrio’s Green Flags campaign, the initiative continued on Thursday 13th in the town with a clean-up of El Chaparral beach. The campaing, which rewarded Mijas as the participating municipality that recycled the most glass during the summer, concluded with the participation of 120 students from IES Sierra de Mijas.

The objective was twofold. On the one hand, to remove waste; on the other, to use the Mar Nova app, as explained by María Cabrera from Paisaje Limpio, to catalogue it and send the data to the Ministry of the Environment to study its origin. Hugo Recio, from Ecovidrio, described the Green Flag campaign as

a “healthy rivalry” between 51 Andalusian municipalities to promote the sustainability of glass, a material with “infinite lives”.

The students demonstrated their awareness. “I think a lot about animals, about the rubbish that accumulates in the sea and affects fish”, said student Kiara Giordano. Her classmate Adrián González added that he already takes action at home, using “glass bottles to reuse them” instead of plastic.

In total, 90 kilos of waste were collected, mainly cigarette butts, wipes and plastic fragments. The councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), described the clean-up as a “symbolic act”, as “we found the beach very clean

because we work on it all year round”, thanking the work of the Town Hall’s Operational Services and Basic Income departments.

Mijas’ victory in the campaign was due to the high level of participation, with 95% of hoteliers involved. Almost 542,000 kilos of glass were collected in the summer, 30,000 more than in 2024. The councillor for Cleanliness, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), highlighted the savings of 70,000 euros that this represented. Belmonte insisted on refuting “the stigma that we have that all waste is mixed afterwards. That is not the case”. The councillor concluded that Mijas has set itself the goal of “increasing these figures even further”.

Soroptimist trains 24 women

Soroptimist International (SI)

This is an experience aimed at personal and professional growth, combining workshops with other activities from 17 countries in leadership skills

Costa del Sol has recently empowered 24 women from 17 different nationalities. These young women, aged between 20 and 30, were able to grow personally and professionally thanks to the workshops, round tables, talks and other activities organised by the Leadership Academy for Women, which the club held from the 5th to the 11th of November at Cortijo La Alegría.

The participants, from fields as diverse as law, engineering, psychology and architecture, took part in various activities designed to help them discover their voice, strengthen their leadership skills and build lasting international networks. “It’s about finding tools to grow as individuals and to become future leaders, because we have said that we need more women in positions in organisations, companies and politics, because women think differently and there is a lack of balance”, said the president of SI Costa del Sol, Daphne Theunissen. “It is very important for scientists to know how to communicate, how to lead a group, how to manage emotions and conflicts... I couldn’t miss it”, said Mari Carmen Banqueri, one of the participants.

In addition to the various talks given by the facilitators, they also had time to learn about the mentoring programme, which is

coordinated by the vice-president of SI Costa del Sol, Aura Roderick: “Everyone will receive nine months of mentoring after the academy. Everything they have learned here will be reinforced during those nine months, and any questions they may have will be answered by their mentor, who will act as a mirror, so that they can talk and understand what is happening, because they are obviously going to go through a process of growth”, she explained.

Leisure time too

They also had time for leisure, with a visit to Mijas Pueblo followed by a tapas tour, an excursion to Málaga city and a ‘Sabor a Málaga’ event where they learnt traditional Andalusian dances.

On Monday 10th, the young

The organisers thanked all the facilitators and Soroptimists clubs from across Europe for their collaboration in developing this academy, as well as local associations such as Avatés and Sembrando Sonrisas, sponsors HM Hospitales and the La Cala Lions Club, and collaborators Mijas Comunicación and the Foreigners Department.
