The 2026 Las Lagunas Fair has now begun, the first in the municipality, coinciding with the children’s summer holidays. The festivities in Las Lagunas kicked off on the evening of Wednesday 24th of June, a night brimming with enthusiasm and excitement during which attendees were able to enjoy the fairground rides at half price, 2.5 euros, to mark Children’s Day. Switching on of the festive lights At around 22:00, with the sun having set and the fairground filled with families and young people keen to have a good time, the official opening of the fair took place with the switching on of the festive lights by the local authorities, including the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP). It was a moment that generated great excitement among the large crowd gathered in front of the archway to watch the festivities come to life.

After the lights were switched on, the procession set off from the arch towards the Municipal Booth, where the government team raised a toast to the festivities and the mayoress, speaking from the Mijas Comunicación set, wished all the people of Mijas a happy fair. “We’re kicking off the summer in the best possible way: with a fair that is all about togetherness, celebration,

sharing and, above all, having a good time”, said Mata, encouraging everyone “to enjoy these days, this fair that takes place in the heart of Mijas, which has three fairs, but today it’s time to enjoy the one in Las Lagunas”. “I would also like to thank the Festivities Department, Operational Services, the Cleaning Department, the Local Police and the Fire Brigade, in short, everyone who works to ensure we can enjoy these festive days”, added Mata. The deputy mayor of Las Lagunas, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), said: “We must thank each and every one of them for all the hard work they have put in over the last few days to make this possible.

Ultimately, the response has been tremendous. This first day sees the biggest turnout; we must make the most of it, come every day, and most importantly, have a good time, and ensure there are no incidents”.

It was an emotional day for biomedical scientist Carlos Huesa Berral and his family, who were present at the plenary session held on Tuesday 23rd, after he was named an Adoptive Son of Mijas. The distinction, proposed by the Mayor’s Office, recognises his professional career and his maternal roots in the town. A graduate in Health Engineering from the University of Málaga (UMA) and holder of a PhD in Medical Physics from the University of Navarra, he also received a fellowship from the American Cancer Society, where he is working on a project focusing on liver tumours. “Carlos is one of our own and we are very proud of him; he also embodies the kind of hopeful youth that society wants to encounter along the way, and he has all the qualities needed to put an end to a dreadful disease like cancer, bringing that day ever closer”, said

management]; it also addresses the issue of waste in industrial estates and commercial waste; and it will regulate the door-to-door collection system, as we have paved the way for the introduction of a commercial door-to-door collection scheme designed primarily for the town”, said Belmonte.

The text also sets out the rules for using municipal recycling centres and introduces new obligations for building sites, developers and companies “with the aim of protecting street cleanliness and the urban environment”, municipal sources explained.

Recycling The new ordinance also pays particular attention to separate collection and recycling, promoting the correct sorting of waste and more efficient waste management. Belmonte pointed out that “keeping a municipality clean is a shared responsibility involving local authorities, businesses, event organisers and the public.

The councillor also wished to thank “the daily cooperation of thousands of residents who, through their responsible behaviour, help to keep our municipality clean. Their involvement is essential for continuing to make progress and improving the image and quality of life in Mijas every day”.

Reactions The opposition highlighted several aspects of this ordinance. For example, the PSOE criticised the fact that use of the recycling centre is restricted to registered residents, when there are many citizens who have a second home in Mijas, an issue which Belmonte clarified could be resolved by providing a property tax (IBI) receipt.

However, the PSOE particularly criticised the fact that the waste collection and street cleaning

contract is not being fulfilled, a point also raised by Cs. “You came here to ensure the waste contract was fully under control, down to the last detail. Mr Belmonte, it’s getting completely out of hand; Mijas is dirtier than ever under your watch. There isn’t a single resident who doesn’t stop us in the street to say, ‘What’s going on? They’re not cleaning my street, they’re not hosing it down”. We’ll leave the workers’ situation for another day because they are way past being on edge, they are on the absolute brink of a strike”, said the PSOE councillor Belén Roca. “All these breaches are detected, penalised and reported to the company. I’m surprised you’re concerned about these breaches because when you were in power there were even more; on average, between 15 and 17 staff members were absent every day”, Belmonte explained to both Roca and the Cs spokesperson, José Carlos Martín, regarding the current cleaning contract.

For their part, Cs emphasised that failure to sort waste at source would result in fines: “The issue under discussion here is that, following the approval of this ordinance, the residents of Mijas have more obligations than they did before, and if they do not comply, what will happen?

Fines. You cannot fix cleaning services, rubbish collection, and the proper oversight of the contract by simply imposing fines; if you go down that path, I believe you are on the wrong track”, said Martín. The councillor for Cleaning explained that the fines are stipulated in Law 7/2022 and are therefore imposed by the national government. Cs, which said it would submit formal objections, also claimed that “they are not complying with Article 11.3 because the cost of the service should be passed on to the public”, but “they are not keen on telling the public that they have to pay more”. On this point, Belmonte assured that “we are not going to increase residents’ rubbish collection charges”.

From Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th of July, the historic centre will switch off its street lighting to host the third edition of ‘Mijas with Soul

by Candlelight’, a multi-sensory experience now firmly established as one of the Costa del Sol’s key summer events. The councillor for Public Space, Melisa Ceballos (PP), encouraged residents to immerse themselves in this event. “Mijas is beautiful when we see our streets without electric lighting, illuminated only by candles. I invite everyone to come and enjoy all the themed activities we have in the workshops and Children’s Day”, said the councillor.

Traffic management plan To manage the influx of visitors, the Town Hall has devised a special transport plan. “We have provided visitors with a shuttle bus to facilitate travel from La Cala and Las Lagunas. This way, anyone who wants to can come up and enjoy the event”, Ceballos explained.

Leandro Loza, cultural promoter at Malik Culture, the event’s organisers, outlined the technical and aesthetic aspects of this third edition, highlighting a comprehensive aesthetic overhaul. “We have

revamped the decorations that will cover the whole town, from the lower area right up to the top of La Muralla. This, together with the candles, will create a truly immersive atmosphere”, he said.

The event’s expansion is evident in the addition of an extra day. “This year we’ve included an extra day.

Although the event starts on Friday the 3rd, the streets will be decorated on Thursday the 2nd and there will indeed be candles in the La Muralla area”, Loza clarified. This first day, Children’s Day, will offer discounts in the children’s area in Plaza de la Constitución, which will feature “a wooden Ferris wheel, a Viking ship, a balloon game and a hand-cranked merry-go-round”, with attractions at a reduced price of 2.00 euros.

Bigger and better The themed market will also expand, exceeding fifty stalls and focusing on diversifying the culinary offering. “The large food and drink area is growing with a range of more original options, such as an Arabic restaurant”, added the organiser. The entertainment programme will be further enhanced with live blacksmithing workshops, belly dancing performances, Celtic music by Treefolk and productions

Every 28th of June marks International LGBTIQ+ Pride Day, a day to promote tolerance, equal rights before the law, non-discrimination and the dignity of people from these communities. The Mijas Town Hall does not wish to remain on the sidelines, and has therefore prepared, through its Families and Equal Opportunities department, “a comprehensive programme of activities” which is taking place over these days.

The programme was presented by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied by the president of the Andalucía Diversidad Federation, Antonio Ferre, and the president of Orgullo Mijas, Alberto Ortega. “LGBTIQ+ Pride Day has its roots in the struggle of thousands of people who, throughout history, have raised their voices to demand rights, equality and recognition.

Thanks to that collective effort, we have made great progress, but there is still a long way to go. That is why, here at the Town Hall, we reaffirm our commitment to working every day towards a more inclusive, fair and respectful society”, explained Mata.

For his part, Ortega stated that “now is the time” because “we are strong now, even though all those fears and insults still exist”.

Activities held As for the activities, the first ones took place last Thursday, 25th of

June, in the courtyard of the Manuel España Theatre. The first was the creation of a participatory mural and the second was the setting up of an information stand called ‘Breaking Labels’.

According to Ferre, “the aim is very simple: to inform and raise visibility, as the best way to normalise these things and talk about them naturally is for them to be visible”. For her part, the mayoress emphasised that “what we want is for everyone to have the same freedom and for no one to feel excluded. Above all, there

must be respect for what each of these people wants to be or feels”.

To this end, the multidisciplinary artist Roco Ruiz created this mural, drawing inspiration from “Mijas’s Mediterranean identity”. He also explained that it features “an Andalusian mosaic, the LGBT flag, a swallow symbolising the freedom to be who we are and to fly freely, and the sea itself, which reflects that inner drive we all have”.

Mata also pointed out that “the mural aims to reflect freedom and diversity. No one should be

questioned for the way they are or the way they feel”.

The other activity, ‘Breaking Labels’, invited participants to write messages of support, reflection or advocacy to be subsequently displayed on a panel.

The association’s president also explained that “the chosen theme is breaking labels because sometimes the LGBTI community is heavily stereotyped and there is a great deal of misinformation and rumours. Labels are all well and good, but only for clothes sizes, that’s it. We don’t want to be labelled”.

To conclude, the mayoress stated that “we are going to raise our voices to say that Mijas is a free municipality where everyone has the chance to feel and be respected. We will also continue working to ensure this message reaches young people”.

Manifesto This Friday 26th of June, the official event for the reading of the LGTBIQ+ manifesto will take place with Antonio Ferre, president of the Andalucía Diversidad Federation. This event reaffirms the commitment to equality, respect and the defence of people belonging to the community. It will also be read at the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas.

The meeting point will be Torreón beach in La Cala, where participants will be able to enjoy sports such as paddle surfing, big paddle surfing, kayaking, beach tennis, vo-

lleyball, snorkelling, beach football and recycled totem workships, all free of charge. According to Mata, “this is a way of promoting sport

people. Our beach gives us the chance to enjoy surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, beach volleyball and kayaking, sports that young people love so much”.

The main activities on offer will be paddle surfing and kayaking, although if weather conditions do not permit these, the other landbased activities will be organised instead. Specialised instructors will advise, assist and support the participants.

Manuel Araujo, managing director of Exploramas, the company operating the service, said: “We’ll

be here every Friday afternoon and Saturday to welcome any young people who drop by. Here they’ll find plenty of fun, nature, the environment and sustainability, and we’re open to anyone who wants to take part and enjoy themselves.

There are seven of us running the programme, all Mijas locals and qualified instructors”.

Territorio Juventud will feature a refreshment stand offering lemonade, fruit and energy bars, which will be available to participants, as well as music to create a lively atmosphere in the area.

Mijas cedes two plots of land to the regional government to expand CEIP Jardín Botánico The land, totalling 9,052 square metres, will, according to the local government team, “improve educational provision” at the school Ed. between 3 and 12, from the first year of infant school through to the sixth year of primary school.

The school occupies a plot within a block that is completed by the other two plots now being transferred, as well as a shopping and dining area. Once the Regional Government of Andalusia officially accepts the transfer of the land, the required agreement between both institutions will be signed.

tive, “this transfer process began under the current administration in November 2023, with the corresponding administrative order”. Following the processing of all the required reports, final approval was granted by the Local Government Board, it explained.
