ednesday 24th was the first day of the La Cala Fair and the fairground was inaugurated from the main portico. The Mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied by the corporation, groups, outgoing King and Queen of the La Cala Fair and visitors, cut the ribbon with the Andalusian flag and pressed the button to turn on the lighting. After the inauguration, the procession walked through the fairground until they reached the Municipal Booth, where they wished residents and visitors a happy fair from the Mijas Comunicación set, “don’t let a single moment slip away,

because today is the day, don’t wait for tomorrow. The atmosphere is amazing, people really want to have a good time and there are a lot of activities planned throughout the week so that everyone can enjoy this traditional festivity”.

Also visiting the set of Mijas Comunicación was Lola Arroyo the town crier of the La Cala Fair 2024, for her this big week in the seaside town will be more special than ever. “I have always been a fairgoer and, although I am not an artist when it comes to singing and dancing, for me these fair days that we share with family and friends, in a happy atmosphere, are very important because we create memories that will live on through

the years”, she said.

On this first day, the Municipal Booth hosted dance performances by Feli Gabriel’s UP groups and Victor Rojas’s students from La Cala.

King and queen of the fair

The evening continued with the traditional contest for queen and king of the festivities, in which six girls and only one boy participated. The event featured three walks: one wearing casual clothes, the second dressed in a flamenco dress and the last one wearing a night gown. “It’s a very good group, they get along very well and have helped a lot during these two days in which we have been rehearsing the show”, said Víctor

Children’s day

Rojas, who was once again in charge of the candidates’ choreographies.

The title of King was for Samuel Jiménez, the only candidate in the male category, who laughingly pointed out that “in the end I was the only brave man because my friends didn’t show up, but I’m very happy”. The jury also chose Nerea Gil and Olivia Maldonado as first and second lady respectively, and Paula Gutiérrez as Miss Congeniality, while Manar Guerrero was named Queen of the La Cala Fair. “If it wasn’t for my parents, I wouldn’t be here right now, I owe them everything”, said Manar very emotional.

Definitely, a first day that neighbours and visitors enjoyed to the fullest.

CELEBRATORY DINNER

The elderly from La Cala de Mijas were the protagonists of the fair on Thursday 25th. There were 260 people participating in this traditional celebratory dinner for the elderly that the Mijas Town Hall organises for every fair in the municipality. The Department for Festivities and Traditions also distributed 200 flower pots with coloured begonias to honour the seniors, who enjoyed the evening accompanied by the Ritmo Andaluz Show Orchestra.

“I think the elderly deserve this special day, which is organised with affection. Thanks to them we are here today, they have done so much for the town and many of them have worked so hard. In a way we are grateful for all the work they have done throughout their lives”, explained the mayo-

The mayoress highlighted the “joy”, “happiness” and “gratitude” that they conveyed during the dinner. “Tomorrow is Grandparents’ Day, it is Santa Ana and San Joaquín and many have wished me a happy saint’s day, but I have also congratulated them because it is thanks to our elders that we are here today”, added the mayoress.

the date for the next editions

A popular consultation will OF THE MIJAS FAIR decide

The Town Hall and the Junta de Festejos reached the agreement ‘unanimously’ and this year’s edition will be held from the 4th to the 9th of September

The Mijas Town Hall and the Junta de Festejos, made up of different groups in the village, have unanimously agreed to hold a popular voting to decide the date for the future editions of the Mijas Pueblo Fair, which is held in honour of the patron saint and perpetual mayoress, the Virgen de la Peña. This has been agreed, explains the government team, after the meeting held on Monday 23rd, in which the members of the board transferred to the Department for Festivities of Mijas Town Hall the “unanimous feeling” to make the query.

In an atmosphere of “harmony and consensus”, says the local government, three proposals were put forward: the first option is for the fair to be held from the 7th to the 11th of September; the second

option is for the same date but with the possibility of adding a day before or after; while the third possibility is for it to be held on a weekend, considering that the fair could never end on the day of the Virgen de la Peña, the 8th of September.

Thus, the process for holding the popular voting is now underway. First of all, the proposal will have to be taken to a plenary session to approve the celebration of the popular vote, which is expected to take place in October. After the outcome, the result will have to go through the plenary session again and, from there, it will have to be transferred to the Consejo Consultivo de la Junta de Andalucía so that it is informed of the decision adopted.

As the councillor for Festivities and Traditions, Silvia Marín (PP), pointed out, “the aim of the popular consultation is to maintain a permanent date for the celebration of the fair, which is what the people from Mijas want. The best way to do this is for the residents to take the initiative in the programming and organisation of the fair”.

Fair 2024

Be that as it may, what has been decided is the date for the cele-

bration of the Mijas Pueblo Fair 2024: it will be from the 4th to the 9th of September. The day for the presentation of the fair’s poster has also been announced: the 16th of August. In this sense, the Festivities Department reported that the neighbour’s request has been accepted so that the ‘verbena’ of the Barrio Santana will once again be the venue for the poster presentation and the opening speech, which will be held a few days before the start of the festivities.

Rosa María Jaime Moreno member of the Junta de Festejos on behalf of the Venerable Brotherhood of the Dulce Nombre de Jesús Nazareno, María Santísima de los Dolores and San Juan Bautista, stressed the importance of these preliminary meetings to convey the general feeling of the neighbours, as well as to highlight the reason for the dates proposed for the celebration: “The fair is really for her, for the Virgen de la Peña, so we want her to be the protagonist”.

The name of the town crier and the programme for this year’s fair are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

C.M. The streets Marbella and Torremolinos, in La Cala de Mijas, and Málaga, in Mijas Pueblo, have been closed to traffic from 19:00 to 00:00 hours since the 1st of July. The councillor for Public Roads, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), explained that the Town Hall is closing the roads “so that visitors and residents can move around calmly”, in order to favour their “circulation” along these roads, among the busiest in the summer season due to the increase in the number of people. The councillor pointed out that the measure is also intended to favour

the

the shops in these areas, which “tend to be very busy and the vehicles are an obstacle”. This measure will last until the end of August, according to the councillor.

The Mijas Town Hall, through the company Eysa Group, which manages sustainable mobility, has implemented an innovative access and payment technology for the four car parks in the municipality: Virgen de la Peña, Candelaria, Branch Office in Las Lagunas and El Juncal, which together have a total of 1,280 parking spaces.

In this way, users who park there for a few hours will be able to enjoy a more convenient and efficient experience, being able to make reservations and pay for their stay directly from their mobile devices. According to the councillor for Infrastructures and Works, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), who is also responsible for Digital Modernisation, subscribers will continue with their usual payment method.

The new functionality of this application by Grupo Eysa, called Mowiz, will allow users to make transactions using the most advanced and secure payment methods: GooglePay, ApplePay and Bizum. According to the local government, this guarantees not only fast and easy payments, but also “safety in each transaction, responding to the growing demand for digital payment solutions from users”.

The councillor for Digital Modernisation, Juan José Torres Trella, explained that the Mowiz app is a replacement for El Parking, also from the Eysa Group, “the company that manages the car parks”. “The previous app, El Parking, had problems and failures and did not work, so the company had to change the application to Mowiz”, argued the councillor, who recommended that anyone who has the El Parking app installed should replace it with the new one, as the old one does not work.

ding and facilitating all available payment methods, in order to increase the efficiency of the resources available and to maintain the rates, offering the first hour for free and the following nine hours for one euro.

As the councillor stated, “the Mijas Town Hall wants to add a distinctive element to these municipal facilities. The aim is to keep solving parking problems

in the most sought-after areas using the most advanced technologies applied to parking and also to promote commercial activity to help local businesses”.

Payment operations

During 2023 the Mijas municipal car parks registered more than 300,000 operations, in which cash payment was the predominant payment method, followed by debit or credit cards. Despite this, forecasts suggest that the percentage of cash transactions will decrease over the next few years, largely influenced by the use of mobile applications such as the recently incorporated one.

This was the first masterclass that the students on these two training programmes, that are being developed at the Employment Promotion building, have received. The healthy habits campaign for the elderly will continue in August

Ed. Dep. The Mijas Town Hall and the Red Cross will maintain during the month of August the information point for healthy habits and biomedical measurements located in the Centre for Active Participation in Las Lagunas. As they have been doing in July, every Wednesday between 9 and 12 hours, Red Cross volunteers will attend to the elderly who visit this place, they will take their blood pressure taken and will provide inform about the

recommendations to be taken into account to face the high temperatures during summer.

The councillor for Senior Citizens, Silvia Marín (PP), took the opportunity to thank the Red Cross for starting up the initiative and for “the involvement and care with which they attend to their users”.

This campaign that promotes

healthy habits during heat waves, promoted by the Red Cross, reduces and helps to avoid the negative impact of high temperatures on our bodies.

In addition to taking their blood pressure, they are also advised to follow certain precautions to cope with the heat: stay hydrated, eat light meals, limit outdoor activities to the first or last hours of the day and keep their homes cool by lowe-

tand these details that are going to make a difference, and also to know the basics to create a good customer experience and to be able to succeed in the business sector”.

The director of the Mitur programme, Pilar Manso , recalled that “from Employment Promotion these two programmes are being developed in Mijas, one of them is more related to tourism and the other one to administrative management. All the students have been employed since June and will be hired for a whole year. We consider that the masterclass is important so that they

The councillor for Employment Promotion, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), wanted to greet the speaker and encourage the students “to make the most of this interesting and practical training”. According to the councillor, “it is very important to give these students not only training tools but also the experience of a person like Néstor who, in the American market, is developing all his talent in a very necessary field such as digital marketing. It is a very interesting class, from the point of view of tourism and customer service. These are training tools and also tools that can be used for personal growth”.

The Legends Weekend will be held in two parts: from the 2nd to the 4th of August and on Friday 16th of August. Tickets are already on sale.

“I think the shows we have prepared for this year are quite varied, with different music styles, and I think they will be very popular, especially because of the talent of the talented artist we have”, said the festival’s promoter, Alberto Cohen, at the presentation of the line-up. On the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 16th of August, Mijas will certainly experience a legendary weekend and no wonder. Those who wish to vibrate with the greatest hits by ABBA, Bee Gees, Paul McCartney, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Ray Charles or Elvis Presley have an appointment at the auditorium in Mijas Pueblo. “Because they are artists who really emulate the originals, both in vocals and staging, and people leave super happy, because, in some way, we relive the music of an era that is no longer repeated”, added Cohen.

A party for all audiences

“We are a group that plays classics from the 80s, rock songs that practically all of us grew up with. When we chose the songs for this festival we were very clear, we chose songs that everyone knows and what we try to do is to make it a big party, a party where everyone enjoys the music and the atmosphere”, said the vocalist of Stereo 80, Claudio Pantaleón Legends Weekend is also a unique opportunity for different generations to come together in the same space: those who grew up with these bands, children who nurtured their ears listening to their parents’ music, and young people who, due to their musical interest, have discovered these legends who are the best pop and rock artists from the 60s, 70s and

In the same vein, the singer Patricio Guevara , who plays Bon Jovi, expressed himself: “I’ve been doing this Bon Jovi tribute for years now, more than 20, and what impresses me most is the variety of ages that enjoy these tributes. I always enjoy them and the audience’s response is always magnificent”.

Mijas will continue to expand its tourist offer with the reopening of the establishment, which has been closed since 2019. It has been acquired by the business group Salmántica Cum Laude, who were impressed by the location: “when we came to see the hotel for the first time we fell in love with the place. Not only because of the the location of the hotel itself, with the views we have over the golf course, the mountains, Mijas village, the five-minute drive to Los Boliches beach, the proximity to Benalmádena, Marbella and so on ..... The location is spectacular”, explained Casimiro Rodríguez, director of the hotel.

There will be around twenty people on the staff and hiring them will promote local employment.
