Green light for the expansion of the water supply project

The Mijas Town Hall and Acosol are making progress in improving the water supply in the municipality with the expansion of the supply project in the Majadilla del Muerto area. According to the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), this expansion responds to a commitment made to residents in the area: “This infrastructure will be extended, as will the commitment that was initially agreed with around 238 residents and which now includes a further 30 or so residents of Mijas”, said Mata. This second phase of the project has been launched in response to the incorporation of more residents who wish to benefit from the service. “During the execution, and now that this first phase has been completed, it has become clear that there are additional needs. These needs have arisen because some residents who initially did not wish to take part have since changed their minds and now want to join the project” explained the delegate of Acosol, Matilde Mancha. That is the current status of this initiative, which “has been practically approved by the homeowners’ association, pending the incorporation of these last few residents. As soon as this happens, we will begin this final phase, which will take approximately two months to complete”, clarified Mancha. The works are being carried out by Acosol, which is providing the financing, to be fully repaid by the residents themselves through instalments. The cost of the first phase
was 1,427,000 euros, including VAT, and rises to 1,598,000 euros, VAT included, with the second phase. Acosol explained that the cost of the works will begin to be charged to the Majadilla del Muerto homeowners’ association, with whom an agreement was signed on 31st March 2023, once residents, who until now obtain their water from wells fed by aquifers or from tanks they purchase themselves, start receiving water from the general supply network in their homes. The works will be charged to the association at a rate of around 100 euros per month per resident over a period of five years. The extension of the works has required an adjustment to the initial 2023 agreement, although the monthly payment that Acosol will charge the association will remain similar, at around 100 euros. According to Mancha, “the cost will be practically the same per month, so residents can rest easy”. Residents’ payment The president of the homeowners’ association, Antonio Pérez, clarified that although Acosol has not yet started charging them for the supply, the association “began collecting a monthly fee of 75 euros from residents in August 2024”. According to Pérez, the collection of these fees began because the works were initially scheduled to be completed by that date, although they have since been extended due to the inclusion of 30 new residents, and to build up a fund in preparation for Acosol beginning to charge the association.

This marked the culmination of decades of struggle by local residents, with the Town Hall acting as intermediary, to guarantee the water supply in this area. D uring that time, residents had met their daily water needs using tanks that they themselves filled with barrels and water collected from aq uifers.
The work carried out during the first phase, which has already been completed and involved an investment of 1,4 2 7 ,0 0 0 , euros, included the installation of a pumping station, the distribution network, a regulation tank, earthworks and paving.

In Malaga, there are currently seven tunas, five male and two female. “Our motto is that we are
timeless and alive, because we always adapt our songs to the times, both old and new. This weekend, Mijas is hosting the Spanish Speed and Bouldering Climbing Cup, bringing together over 300 athletes from across the country. The event will also serve to select representatives for the Spanish climbing team. The final routes for both disciplines are being prepared. On Wednesday 17th, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), visited the spectacular facility that is being set up and which, as she pointed out, will mean the visit of “300 athletes who will be accompanied and who can stay and get to know our municipality, putting Mijas on the national sporting map, which is so important for us”. Two disciplines will be contested in Mijas: speed, where climbers compete against the clock on an identical course; and bouldering, which tests technique and strength on short and demanding routes. The finals will take place from 17 hours on Saturday and from 14 hours on Sunday in the diffe-

rent categories of the competitions. “The Town Hall invites residents and visitors to come to the Las Lagunas fairground to enjoy a unique spectacle, with a sporting, youthful and family atmosphere and the opportunity to see climbing at its highest level up close. In addition, this event is once again a major sporting tourist attraction”, said the mayoress. Olympic discipline The facilities, which have been set up in Las Lagunas for several days, will host the dis-
ciplines that were seen at the Olympic Games in Paris and Tokyo. The bouldering wall is 15 metres wide and 4.5 metres high, and on it climbers test their strength and skill without ropes, tackling a series of routes. The speed tower, on the other hand, is 17 metres high; the current Olympic record for climbing it is four and a half seconds. The director of official competitions for the Spanish Mountain Sports Federation, Finuco Martínez, explained that “all of this is set up in accordance with safety measures and counterweights, all specifi-
cations are approved, and the holds are certified by the International Federation”, because, as he pointed out, “what we are doing throughout Spain are small world cups”. Therefore, athletes from the 17 autonomous communities will be present in Mijas this weekend, “they all have to come to compete because this is where the Spanish team that goes on to the World Cup is selected”. Martínez also wanted to thank the Mijas Town Hall for its “commitment to emerging and minority sports. Climbing has become popular because people enjoy it, it is a very social activi-
ty.” Proof of this is that, in the competition, we will be able to see climbers of all ages, from 15 years old to the senior categories. A large pool of athletes will have the opportunity to qualify to represent Spain at an international level.

Soroptimist presents its projects at its Summer Party C.M. Soroptimist International (SI) Costa del Sol has once again demonstrated its commitment to the comunity during its sixth Summer Party, an evening of celebration, music and solidarity held in Mijas. The president of SI Costa del Sol, Daphne Theunissen, opened the event and thanked the Mijas Town Hall’s Foreigners Department for its “continued support of the organisation’s mission”, specifically councillor Mario Bravo (PP) and municipal technicians Katja Thirion and Laura Córdoba. She also highlighted the support of all attendees at the party and of those who have collaborated throughout the year, such as Costa Women, the La Cala Lions Club, the Mijas Red Cross, Sembrando Sonrisas, Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo Tzoani, and Avatés.
The party also served as a charity event to support the organisation’s expansion projects, raising 500 euros. In addition, attendees enjoyed a musical performance by singer Janet Powell, whose previous collaboration with SI Costa del Sol helped raise funds for the victims of the Dana floods. Among SI Costa del Sol’s future projects is a return to Paiporta, Valencia, to reconnect with the women supported last year through the ‘Soroptimist by your side’ initiative, which helped them “rebuild their lives and businesses”, the organisation stated in a press release. On Tuesday 16th, the Toastmasters Costa del Soul association held an open session at the La Cala Branch Office with the aim of introducing itself to the public. This is a group that helps people improve their public speaking and leadership skills through a simple approach: holding meetings around a specific theme, which serves as a guide for participants to debate and improvise on the topic. “These sessions help people overcome their stage fright when speaking in public and also manage the emotions that arise during a presentation. We work on all
these aspects to build, above all, self-confidence”, explained the president of the association on the Costa del Sol, Claudia Villarreal. For his part, the deputy mayor of La Cala, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), who was present at the event, highlighted both the role of this association and the importance of effective communication in all areas of life. “From the Town Hall, we will hold meetings with this club to explore the possibility of bringing this initiative into the business sector, providing public speaking tools to companies, entrepreneurs, and those entering the labour market”, concluded the councillor. Toastmasters is present in more
than 150 countries worldwide, with over 250,000 members, and 14,000 clubs, five of them in the province of Malaga and the most recent on the Costa del Sol. “This club is also bilingual. La Cala Lions Club brought together over a hundred people for its ‘Memory Day’ in support of children with cancer M.F. The La Cala Lions Club recently organised its third Memory Day in remembrance of children with cancer and life-threatening illnesses, with the participation of over a hundred people, including 48 children and their families, from the AECC, ADIMI and Fundación Olivares associations. “Give a child a gift and they will be amused. Give a child a memory and these could last for ever,” said Wynson Beswick, a member of the Lions Club. The event was held at the Miraflores Tennis Club, featuring numerous activities for the children.
The organisers thanked everyone who contributed, both in planning the event and making donations. It was a very special day for the fami-

C.L./B.M. On Wednesday 17th, the Costa Women group in Mijas held a workshop entitled ‘Becoming, a workshop for the future self’, in which a group of North American women joined local participants. According to the organisers, the day began “with inspiration and connection” over a healthy and restorative breakfast. This was the first meeting of the season for Costa Women Mijas, and it took place again at the Play restaurant, where the group usually holds its coworking sessions. The founder of Costa Women Mijas, Ali Meehan, explained that “this is a special day in the programme because we have a visit from North American women who are on a retreat here and today they dedicated their day to meeting with us and discussing the future, both professional and personal”. The Department for Foreigners supported the initiative of this group, which seeks to foster synergies between women entrepreneurs. The councillor responsible for the area, Mario Bravo (PP), attended the meeting. “Today, the group is focusing on a specific topic: how to improve their lives in the future, both personally and professionally. They are all bu-
sinesswomen and entrepreneurs with different activities, but today they share the same goal: how to grow in life”. Ali Meehan and Vesna Latinovic guided participants through a morning of vision, creativity and connection to align with their ‘future self’, set intentions and unlock their inner wisdom, all while enjoying a healthy brunch at one of the group’s partner establishments. Some participants shared their experiences, including the Canadian personal trainer Pili Nemers. “I work in health and fitness, and my business is online. I empower women to be stronger and more confident so that they can fall in love with their bodies and their lives”. Ana María Ignat, owner of the Play restaurant, also participated: “We share the same values and believe women have many skills in the business world. That’s why we always support Costa Women and the initiatives of women entrepreneurs”. Costa Women is a community of foreign women living here, aiming to maintain a network of personal and professional contacts to support each other and grow together.

The Mijas Town Hall has completed its participation in the latest edition of Ecovidrio’s Green Flags Movement, with a massive response, according to the Town Hall. Of the 561 hospitality establishments surveyed, 95% recycle glass, making Mijas a benchmark in its commitment to recycling. During July and August, 541,856 kilos of glass were collected in the municipality, which is 30,000 kilos more than in the same period in 2024 and almost 60,000 more than in 2023. This positive trend reflects the joint effort of hoteliers, residents and the administration to reinforce sustainability in Mijas. The councillor for Street Cleaning, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), said in a press release that “we are very satisfied because the hospitality industry in Mijas has once again

The campaign featured an unprecedented deployment of advertising and awareness-raising materials throughout the municipality. Billboards, displays,
bus shelters, and large-format screens were installed, alongside advertising on city buses. It was also promoted through the media, with television commercials, radio spots and and publications in both print and online press. Belmonte stressed that “our aim was to get the recycling message across to every corner of Mijas, and we have achieved
that”. The campaign image was extended to the taxi fleet, municipal and cleaning vehicles, as well as the various bus routes, making the initiative a shared action throughout the municipality. It was also present at major events, such as the La Cala Fair and the Mijas Unión Basket Summer League, and was shown at summer cinemas, reaching a di-

The Economic Development Department of the Mijas Town Hall has launched a new activity as part of the Nexo programme for Thursday 2nd of October. Under the title ‘Successful Work Teams’, speakers Kiko Vegas and Pedro Belmonte will give a talk on management skills from 9:30 to 12:30 hours in the auditorium of the La Cala Branch Office. “This event is primarily focused on training in leadership, personal development and team building. The aim is to provide tools so that business owners, self-employed professionals, entrepreneurs, students and anyone interested in entrepreneurship or the business world can tackle their day-to-day challenges”, explained the councillor responsible for the department, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP). There are a total of nine such markets in the province, one of which takes place on the second and last Sunday of each month on the boulevard in La Cala de Mijas, from 9 to 14 hours. Its objectives
are to promote organic production and consumption, offer training on agriculture and healthy nutrition, and provide advice on organic certification. The La Cala de Mijas market comprises a total of 13 permanent stalls run by producers from municipalities such as Pizarra, Alozaina and Coín, and they assure that the food is of the highest quality,

as emphasised by the coordinator of the Guadalhorce Ecológico Association, Ana Jiménez, “because everything is harvested on Friday and we hold the markets on Saturday and Sunday, the rest of the week, the producers work on their farms, tending the land and sowing, to prepare for the weekend market”. The market offers a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, but you can also buy eggs, oil, cheese, honey and bread, all with organic certification. These products stand out for several reasons, not all related to taste. “People from the countryside who visit and try the products often say, ‘it reminds me of my father, of my childhood’, because
these products come directly from the land to the market, to your kitchen”, Jiménez explained. One example is Bio Vega de Los Ríos, which specialises in growing leafy green products. Its shopkeeper, Aaron Salleras, said that one of the best-selling products, especially in summer, is basil, but added that they will soon start selling arugula, escarole and other types of lettuce. Regular customers Salleras says that customers tend to be loyal: “We have a lot of customers who come to see us every week, no matter where we are”.
