On the evening of Tuesday 22nd of July, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, officially inaugurated the La Cala Fair with the switching on of the artistic lighting, accompanied by members of the local government team. The first day of the fair featured reduced prices on attractions for Children’s Day, the traditional dinner honouring the elderly, and a performance by Manuel Orta at the Municipal Booth, entertaining the crowd with sevillanas and rumbas. Wednesday 23rd, was dedicated to the election of the fair’s kings and queens, both adults and children’s categories, followed by a performance from the Sevillian duo El Tren de los Sueños. On Thursday, the spotlight was on Nacha Pop and the Tribute to Sanz concerts, marking the halfway point of the celebrations, with a full programme of activities planned throughout the coming days, both day and night.

On Tuesday, 22nd of July, the La Cala de Mijas Fair and Festivities 2025 officially began with a celebration packed with new features, events and special guests. The festivities started with an afternoon dedicated to the little ones. Families enjoyed Special Children’s Day, where all the fairground attractions were available at a special reduced price of 2.50 euros. Dinner for seniors The senior citizens of La Cala were also in the spotlight on Tuesday. More than 220 residents attended a tribute dinner surrounded by friends, family and a great atmosphere. Members of the local government, corporation and festivities committee welcomed the seniors, who enjoyed a full menu including Malaga salad and prawns as starters, pork loin in sauce with rice as the main course and chocolate cake for dessert. As tradition dictates, the Senior Citizens’ Department held a draw to choose the Grandfather and Grandmother of this year’s event. Ana María Berdugo and Manuel Sena, both from La Cala, were the lucky winners. The evening was brought to life with musical entertainment featuring bachata, pasodobles, salsa and sevillanas, with residents enjoying some lively dancing thanks to Ritmo Andaluz Show.

Manuel Orta Official inauguration As night fell, at around 22:30 hours, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied by the government team, the festivities committee, local groups and residents, inaugurated the fair with the switching on of the artistic lighting and the traditional ribbon cutting ceremony. This marked the start of six days of festivities running until Sunday 27th of July, which this year feature one of the largest Ferris wheels in Spain. “It’s a fair designed for those who have lived all their lives here in La Cala, but they also make an exception and open their doors to all the holidaymakers who
come to enjoy our municipality”. To end the night, Sevillian Manuel Orta took to the stage at the municipal booth, getting everyone dancing to his rumbas and sevillanas. Election of the king and queen The La Cala de Mijas Fair already has its court for 2025. The second day, Wednesday 23rd, began with dances by the UP group led by Víctor Rojas and its flamenco show. This was followed by the fantastic children’s show ‘Disney Rock’, which took the audience on a musical journey through children’s stories and films, getting the whole family dancing. The same charac-

The jury, made up of last year’s kings and queens of Mijas Pueblo and Las Lagunas, awarded the titles of King and Queen of this
year’s fair to siblings Ángel and Claudia Mendo. Morgan Gonzálo and Hannah López were named ladies, and Lucía Rodríguez received the Miss Congeniality award. Meanwhile, Gabriel Lotuffo was named the king’s companion. Star performance To round off a night full of beauty, the Sevillians Marta Castro and Omar Kaleh invited the audience to aboard El Tren de los Sueños (The Train of Dreams) to dance to flamenco-influenced songs such as the well-known ‘Eres para mi’ and ‘Pirata de bokita’. The couple premiered three songs on the La Cala stage.

During the festivities, the Mijas Town Hall has deployed an extensive cleaning and security operation to ensure the wellbeing of residents and visitors throughout the event. As in previous fairs, the operation includes personnel from the Local Police, Civil Guard, Fire Brigade, Civil Protection, and emergency medical teams. Finally, the cleaning team has also been increased to guarantee that streets and public areas remain clean.

The Department of Education at the Mijas Town Hall is taking advantage of the school holidays to carry out maintenance and conservation work on the 12 public nursery and primary schools in the municipality. On Tuesday 22nd, together with the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor for Education, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), we visited CEIP María Zambrano (Las Lagunas) to see first-hand the work being carried out this summer to ensure the schools are ready for the start of the new academic year in September. Before the end of each school year, the management teams of the schools submit their requests to the Town Hall, which then carries out the necessary work during the holidays to keep the facilities in optimal condition. The main task currently being undertaken across all schools is the painting of interior and exterior areas. “This maintenance work is being carried out by around 20 to 25 people, including maintenan-

ce technicians and the Operational Services team, to whom I would like to thank for their dedication at this time of year to ensuring that our schools are ready for September”, said the mayoress of Mijas. In addition, more extensive work is also being carried out. “For example, at Los Claveles, the metal roof has been repaired by Operational

also been painted”, explained Torres Trella. Additionally, masonry work is being carried out, such as tile replacements and improvements to sports facilities, as well as plumbing work, new electrical installations, and pest control. “For example, at the Virgen de la Peña school, we have replaced a large number of light switches, and in terms of plumbing, the children’s toilets have been replaced in several schools”, added the councillor for Education. In this regard, the mayoress also explained that the facilities are being checked to detect any faults in sockets, lights, windows, doors, blinds and toilets. Other tasks include disinfecting and cleaning
water tanks, thoroughly cleaning playgrounds, inspecting fire extinguishers with the Occupational Risk Prevention Service, repairing awnings and tiling, and clearing and pruning outdoor areas through the Parks and Gardens Department, as well as pest control. Work carried out The work, they say, is progressing at a good pace. “At the moment, almost 90% of the work at María Zambrano has been carried out in July, taking advantage of the absence of school activity”, said Mata, who also assured that the schools in Mijas, in general, “are in good condition”, thanks also to the ongoing work of the caretakers, who look after the day-to-day maintenance needs, and the parents’ associations (AMPAs), who also request improvements. One example is the replacement of the flooring in the multi-purpose room at María
Zambrano School, where “a specific type of parquet flooring requested by both teachers and parents will be installed to provide a better-equipped space for pupils. Therefore, we always respond to the needs we receive from the School Councils, but also from the various parents’ associations of the different schools in our municipality”. During the first half of July, repairs have also been carried out at CEIP El Albero, where the infant toilets were fixed; painting work was done at Las Cañadas; classrooms and corridors were painted at Campanales, where new door frames were also installed in the kitchen and dining areas; and at Los Claveles Nursery School, painting was done, old furniture removed, and the roof repaired. Everything, they say, will be ready by September 10th, when the new school year begins in Andalusia.

I am deeply grateful and at the service of the town”, said the researcher. Mata said she felt “proud as mayoress that Mijas is known all over the world, and that thanks to people like Carlos, Mijas continues to grow”. She added that “we are fortunate to have people who, even if they are not living here at the moment, always carry a piece of the municipality in their hearts”.

Although the past hydrological year offered some respite, the memory of drought remains fresh. That’s why the Mijas Town Hall continues to implement its climate adaptation plan, transforming green areas into more sustainable gardens. The latest major xeriscaping project is now nearing completion in one of the municipality’s most prominent locations: the entrance roundabout to La Cala, which now boasts a completely renewed look. The councillor for Parks and Gardens, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), described it as “one of the most important landscaping projects in La Cala, at its entrance roundabout, which had long been in need of a makeover, something more in line with our climate.” He stressed that, after seven years of drought, “we mustn’t let our guard down, it’s

essential to incorporate more climate-conscious landscaping in towns to save water.” A garden for the future The new layout combines sustainability with visual appeal. Around 200 drought-resistant plants have been added, including palms, cacti, and bougainvillea, all well suited to the local environment. Decorative elements such as volcanic rock, recycled glass, and white pebbles help minimise both maintenance and water use. The
roundabout now features a new automatic drip irrigation system and low-intensity lighting to maximise energy efficiency. In keeping with a zero-waste approach, the oleanders previously planted at the site have been carefully removed and replanted near the La Cala swimming pool. Work began a week and a half ago and has progressed swiftly to minimise disruption to residents and tourists. The project is expected to be completed early next week. Gómez Teruel expressed his gratitude to everyone involved: “From municipal gardeners to the companies that took part, the Operational Services, electricians, plumbers, and the metalworkers who created the beautiful lettering that now symbolises La Cala”.

Mijas remembers Juan Antonio Gómez with a walk on the 15th anniversary of his disappearance.To commemorate the 15th anniversary of Juan Antonio Gómez’s disappearance, his family and neighbours held a walk in his memory on Sunday 20th. More than a hundred people walked through the streets of Mijas Pueblo, from the Santana neighbourhood to the viewpoint that bears his name, in an event that drew nearly 500 registered participants. The most emotional moment was when his sister, Carmen, read aloud a poem written by Juan Antonio himself.
Gastrolatino comes to Mijas Pueblo from the 31st of July to the 3rd of August.Following its success in La Cala and Las Lagunas, Gastrolatino is coming to Mijas Pueblo from July 31st to August 3rd. The Virgen de la Peña square will be transformed into a corner of Havana, with food and entertainment. Live music will take centre stage with performances by Quinteto Lazason (Thursday 31st and Friday 1st), a tribute to Los Van Van (Saturday 2nd), and the voice of Pablo Hernández (Sunday 3rd) to close the festival.

When a child’s strength comes
FROM THEIR MOTHER’S HEART Sergio’s story is the chronicle of his mother Patricia Moreno’s fight F.M.R. Sergio’s life, a 13-year-old boy from Mijas, changed completely in 2023. A case of meningitis caused by an undiagnosed sinus infection resulted in severe brain damage, leaving him with serious motor and cognitive impairments.
His body can move, “but what’s not working is the engine,” explains his mother, Patricia Moreno. The wheelchair is the most visible consequence, but the internal injuries also affect his memory, speech and body temperature regulation.
A glimmer of hope came in the form of an expensive alternative therapy in Barcelona, which helped him take a few steps again and improve his responsiveness. However, the effects are temporary, and the family needs to raise funds to return in September, as each session costs around 250 euros, not including travel and accommodation. In the face of this challenge, the community has rallied. The Sembrando Sonrisas association, led by Rosa Planelles, has been a key sup-

On Saturday 19th of July, the Aula del Mar Foundation took to the beaches of Mijas to raise awareness about the importance of caring for Posidonia and protecting our seabeds. The campaign, entitled ‘Mares vivos’ (Living Seas), was part of the annual ‘Bosques Sumergidos’ (Submerged Forests) programme, launched by the Aula del Mar Foundation, which runs several projects in Mijas to pro-
tect the seabed. One of these is the Creamar project, made up of volunteers “with whom we observe coastal and marine species and carry out activities such as these environmental education workshops, in which they themselves are responsible for informing beach users about how to respect and enjoy the coastline at the same time”, said the president of the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, Juan Antonio López. Participants enjoyed very inter-

Volunteering is an essential part of awareness-raising projects. “I signed up with my partner because I love all species, not just marine life but all animals, and I think the work that the Creamar group is doing is very important, which is why we signed up”, said volunteer Denis Abascal. The Marine Protection Network wants to continue adding volunteers to the Creamar project, and you can be one of them.

For them, there are games, drawings, workshops, and small gifts. “Activities like this are really important because children are like sponges, they absorb everything they learn here and take it back home”, added one of the organisers. On Wednesday 23rd, La Cala said goodbye to one of its most beloved neighbours, businessman Miguel Arroyo Jaime, who passed away at the age of 69 after a hard battle with cancer complicated by pneumonia. The eldest son of Antonio Arroyo Blanco, Miguel leaves behind an indelible legacy of hard work and prosperity, but above all, the memory of a humble, discreet man who always had a kind word and a helping hand for those in need. His role as a businessman was just part of a deeper portrait: that of a man known for his approachable nature and modest disposition. Far from ostentatious, those who sought his advice or help always found an open door and a friendly word. His commitment to Mijas was reflected in numerous contributions made without seeking recognition, including several sculptures that now form part of the town’s landscape. A native of La Cala who, despite his success, always kept his feet on the ground and his arms around his large family.

In 2018, the Town Hall inaugurated the Miguel Arroyo and Emilio Ortiz roundabout in La Noria, an event at which, accompanied by his wife, Loli Gómez, and their three daughters, Inmaculada, Rocío and Raquel, he was publicly thanked for his dedication to the town. N.L. Around 50 people took part on Friday 18th in the second session of the sun protection campaign launched by the Youth Department, ‘Mójate con tu piel’ (Dive in with your skin), at AquaMijas. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of the sun on our skin. Premature ageing, dark spots and skin cancer are just some of the risks posed by sun exposure without protection or at times when it is not recommended. This was explained by the experts who, together with the Spanish Association Against Cancer and the Youth Department of the Mijas Town Hall, took part in the campaign. “There are a lot of myths going around, we think we know everything, but then someone comes along on social media and wipes out all the scientifically proven information”, said the health educatora Aixa Galán.
