Fun White Week in Entrerríos
A total of 70 children between 4 and 15 years of old have an important mission during the school holidays: to take care of the environment and to respect the animals. To this end, they have been entrusted with ‘The keys to nature’, which is the theme of the camp that has been organised at the Entrerríos Youth Hostel for this White Week. Thus, through craft and gastronomic workshops, environmental routes through the area, taking care of the vegetable garden and animals, the children are learning to protect our world. On Wednesday 26th, they also received a visit from the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, and the councillor for the Entrerríos Youth Hostel, Melisa Ceballos / Jacobo Perea. NEWS/05

The streets Nerja and Casarabonela, located in the area around the La Cala Boulevard, will be closed to traffic during the four months that the works, which are included in the municipal improvement plan, will last. The mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), together with the councillor for Works and Infrastructures, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), checked first-hand the progress of the works during a visit to the area on Monday 24th. “These works are going to improve this street not only from an aesthetic point of view, but also from a technical point of view. A new separate sewer system will be installed (one for rainwater and the other one for wastewaters), which will not only improve traffic on this street, but also its infrastructure”, explained Mata.
At the same time, work is being carried out with the same objective on Calle Casarabonela, a road perpendicular to Calle Nerja. With these works, the mayoress of Mijas emphasised, the aim is also to put an end to the flooding problems in the area, which “is good news, specially, for those neighbours who had told us that, at times, the water reached their homes because sometimes the infrastructure of some streets is not prepared”.

improve energy efficiency as well as gas emissions, all in accordance with the criteria of RD 1890/2008. ‘We are also committed to changing the lighting to LED lights with lower consumption and, therefore, providing a better illumination of the street at night and at the lowest possible cost”, said Mata.
Regarding the refurbishment on the surface, the current pavement and road surface will be replaced by ceramic paving and bituminous concrete, respectively, separated by a gully drainage
channel. All the vertical and horizontal signage will be changed and new street furniture will be installed, “it has been organised so that no parking spaces are lost and there will be trees to provide shade, therefore, the result will be brighter, more walkable and

The work also focuses on eliminating architectural barriers to improve accessibility.
Four months
The works will involve an investment of 407,000 euros and will cover almost 120 linear metres. According to the schedule, the works will be completed in June, coinciding with the start of the high season when La Cala starts hosting a greater number of visitors.

On the 25th, the Town Hall organised a new talk for foreign residents to inform them about different matters of economic, fiscal and legal interest. The meeting had the collaboration of different professional experts in each subject. These informative talks, organised by the Foreigners Department, are attended by a large number of people interested in the topics to be discussed. According to the councillor for the area, Mario Bravo (PP), “with these regular meetings we provide information on current legislation and on the latest developments in economic matters. The aim is to provide all the information and respond to any question they might have. We have a foreign population here, almost exclusively English-speaking, and our aim is to make their lives easier”.
Lawyer Patricia Ruiz , from the company My Lawer in Spain, was in charge of explaining the new developments regarding holiday rentals.

‘immerses’ itself in the ITB to present its tourism offer
F.R. From the 4th to the 6th of March, the German capital will be the epicentre of international tourism thanks to the celebration of one of the most important fairs of the sector: the Internationale Tourismus-Börse, the ITB Berlin. One more year, our town will be present at this event to present its tourism offer and its strategic positioning, which already defended with good results in the Madrid fair Fitur 2025.
The councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), also recalled that, in parallel to the subjective nature of what it means to visit Mijas, there are objective figures that demonstrate its leading position.
Figures
It should be noted that our town closed the month of January with an occupancy rate of 50.98%, which is 8.98% more than the same month of the previous year. In addition, 2024 registered an occupancy rate of 73.82%, which is 1.31% more than in 2023.

have an irregular situation. The latest updates on tourist rentals will have a big impact in Mijas, where we have almost 9,000 dwellings of this type. This issue is of great concern to foreigners, as the regulations will come into force in April”.
Associate Director at Blacktowers, Tim Govaerts , addressed other topics of interest, such as taxes, succession plannings, estate planning, funerals, pensions, and general information about the economic and political system.
The talk was in collaboration with the companies Blacktower, LGT, Avalon and My Lawyer in Spain.
In order to achieve this, those responsible for Tourism at the Town Hall will work with the strategy of trying to transmit the intangible aspects of the destination, which is why the area is urging visitors and entrepreneurs in the sector to ‘immerse themselves’ in Mijas, which is the slogan chosen this year for the promotional campaign.
That is why the presence of Mijas at the ITB has a special relevance given the importance of the German tourists, who represent one of the main source markets for visitors. In fact, statistics from the various tourist offices in the municipality show that, throughout 2024, almost 9,000 people of German origin visited these information points.
“This is an extremely important segment for Mijas since, in certain areas such as golf, its presence and prevalence are very significant”, concluded the Tourism Councillor.

Mijas cleans stream beds as an action to prevent fires and floods
M.J.G. The Town Hall, through the Operational Services Department, is carrying out a periodic and gradual stream cleaning plan with the aim of cleaning up the riverbeds located in urban areas. ‘The aim of this plan is to keep these beds clear in order to avoid possible flooding, although this work also acts as a barrier to prevent fires,’ explained the councillor for Operational Services, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), during
a visit to the Arroyo Real stream on Wednesday 25th.
This season, the work began in September and is being carried out gradually in ten streams, during the months when there is no fire hazard. Work has already been carried out on the streams María Barranco (1,500 m), Pueblo Rocío (300 m), Los Jarros (450 m), El Maestro (350 m), Hinojal (800 m), La Cala (1,800 m), Ana María de Calypso (400

Two heavy-duty vehicles are used to remove the brush and waste, in addition to five workers from Renta Básica (Basic Income) who are responsible for the removal of any remaining debris. The organic material removed is shredded and deposited again to preserve the ecosystems. “It is very important to keep these areas in good condition prevent creation of blockages when it rains and also to prevent waste from reaching the beaches”, said Gómez, who called on residents not to throw waste into these streams because, “as well as posing a risk to safety, it can cause environmental damage”.

M.Fernández. After travelling to Valencia in January to see first-hand the situation of the victims of the DANA, the members of the association Soroptimist International Costa del Sol (SI) knew they wanted to help. To that end, last Sunday 23rd, they organised a charity concert in collaboration with jazz singer Janet Powell to raise funds. The event took place at the collective’s headquarters, located in the Zoco de Calahonda.
“We went to Valencia in January to get to know the area and it’s impressive to see it, because you see the news and you get an idea but you don’t really realise what these people are going through until you go there and see it”, said SI’s president, Daphne Theunissen. This solidarity initiative is part of SI’s project ‘Soroptimist, a tu lado’ (Soroptimist, by your side) and the funds will go specifically to women entrepreneurs in Valencia.
“We got in touch with women with businesses there, many of them are self-employed with rented premises, yoga instructors, physiotherapists, people who make clothes for the mountains... and they told us that they needed help. We had the opportunity to sit down and talk to them; they told us what they were going through and I think that paying attention to them and showing our interest is important for them”, added Theunissen, who is very aware of the cause.

On Sunday 9th the party will take place in La Cala. The parade, with floats and entertainment groups, will leave from the Cultural Centre and will end in the Butibamba Park. There will be activities for the children and a stage will be set up where the best fancy dress will be chosen. The bar will be managed by the parish group of Santa Teresa. concert by Janet Powell. It was also a very special event for the singer. “When I heard what had happened, it was devastating, so I wondered what I could do to really help, and they came from Soroptimist and asked me to sing at this event, and that’s how the idea came about”, she explained. Powell said she has been singing for about 10 years and is now working on the songs for the album, “that I’m going to release in the summer”, she said.
Members of the Foreigners Department of the Mijas Town Hall also attended the concert to collaborate. “We need to do more activities, because the problem is so big that we need to raise more money”, said Theunissen, who explained that her group is already thinking of more
“We reached these women through contacts we have there in Valencia and we like to help women who are working, professional women, because once their businesses are up and running again, the help we give them will be for them but also for the people around them”, added the president of SI, who said after seeing the catastrophe in Valencia in person, that “the Valencians feel very abandoned and I think it is important to go there and see them. The fact that you from Mijas Comunicación are here to raise awareness is fantastic, so that other people can also help, because there are many needs and perhaps their recovery will take years”, she said.
