Every year the National Statistics Institute compiles a list of the census population data for all Spanish municipalities. This list shows that, in the specific case of Mijas, the population has been growing gradually over the last three years to over 92,000 inhabitants. If the figure is compared with that registered in 2022, the increase is 3,398 more people.

Over 1,500 senior citizens enjoy the

Christmas lunch

organised by the Town Hall

Retirees and pensioners of the municipality enjoyed a day of coexistence in the halls of the Torremolinos Congress Centre

The Mijas Town Hall has resumed this year the traditional Christmas lunch in which retirees and pensioners of the town gather to enjoy a day of coexistence at this time of the year. The event was held at the Torremolinos Congress Centre, where, on Friday 20th, more than 1,450 neighbours travelled by buses provided by the Town Hall.

“We have been able to ensure that all the elderly of Mijas, regardless of the district they belong to, can have a Christ-

mas lunch together. This year, so that everyone can come together and have a good time, we have made sure that it is a lunch for 1,450 senior citizens. This

way, they can enjoy with their friends and neighbours and I think that the Mijas Town Hall makes a great effort organising this kind of lunch for so many

Father Christmas collects his letters in Mijas

For several days, together with his elves, he set up his village in the three centres so that the children could enjoy different activities and deliver their missives

C.B./C.A. Father Christmas and his village visited the three centres of Mijas to collect all the letters. The Department of Festivities and Traditions was in charge of contacting Father Christmas to ask him to make a previous stop in our municipality, so on Friday and Saturday the elves set up their village in La Cala and Mijas Pueblo, respectively, and on Monday in Las Lagunas.

During the different days, the councillor for the department, Silvia Marín (PP), was also present and told us that the children, once again this year, had been very good, so they will surely receive all the presents they have asked for. “Children sometimes set an example for adults and we must

learn from them, so let’s take advantage of this month, which is the month of the child and the month of the family, to learn from the innocence of children, and with that in mind, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and festivities”, said Marín.

people”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP).

The Senior Citizens department praised the work of all the people involved in organising an event of this nature. “Today, we have been able to bring together almost 1,500 people to offer them this tribute meal. The truth is that it is a satisfaction to see how they all come with so much joy and the desire to have a good time”, said the councillor for the Elderly, Silvia Marín (PP), who pointed out that “the three districts had not come together to share this Christmas lunch since 2019”. The

Senior Citizens Department set up a programme which, in addition to the transportation by bus, included a health team and an ambulance, and the presence of volunteers from Mijas Civil Protection. “We would like to thank the work of the volunteers from Mijas Civil Protection, who are always there to support all the departments, especially the Senior Citizens Department, as they are today”, said the mayoress. A large representation of councillors from the municipal corporation also shared with them this Christmas lunch.

The Royal Postman is here!

C.B./C.A. The countdown is over: the Royal Emissary of Their Majesties The Three Wise Men from the East has already set foot on Mijas land. On Thursday 26th in the afternoon, the place chosen to start his journey was the Fernán Caballero Park in Las Lagunas.

The event, organised by the Festivities and Traditions Department, offered a variety of activities that delighted the children. The councillor for the area, Silvia Marín (PP), explained that “the Royal Postman comes with his whole entourage of pages and there are

activities for children of all ages”.

On Friday 27th the Royal Postman will be in Mijas Pueblo, at 16:00 hours, in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña. On Saturday 28th, at the same time, we will also have the opportunity to give him the missives in La Cala, next to the Carrefour. While the little ones wait their turn to deliver the letter, they will also be able to enjoy free games and workshops.

Also on Friday, in the Doña Ermita park in Las Lagunas you can enjoy ‘The Grinch in the world of toys’, from 17:00 hours.

Trees The IX Route Solidarity

The initiative, organised by Cáritas with the collaboration of the Mijas Town Hall, will be active until the 5th of January

If you have not yet enjoyed the IX Route of Solidarity Trees, there is still time because this charitable action will be active until the 5th of January. It is an initiative that in this edition seeks to raise funds for the victims of the DANA and is organised by Caritas in collaboration with the Town Hall. It involves businesses, associations, brotherhoods and neighbours of the municipality and has two objectives: to decorate the streets at Christmas and to raise funds to help those who need it most.

Those interested in taking part just need to purchase a map with the location of the trees from the Tourist Office. In addition, the route includes a competition to choose the tree with the most votes by means of donations of one euro per map, which will go entirely to Caritas. “We want this activity to be a meeting point for families and an example of how, together, we can make a big di-

fference”, said the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), during the presentation of the activity. The trees will be on display in different parts of the municipality until the 5th of January. The collection and delivery points for the maps include, in addition to the Mijas Pueblo Tourist Office, the Bootello Pharmacy and Calzados Moreno. There will also be a final raffle with prizes for participants.

The Child Intervention Programme is once again run by Social Inclusion

From January, this programme, which has been carried out in recent years by the Red Cross, will be run directly by municipal workers

From January onwards, the Social Inclusion department will be directly involved in the development of the Intervention Programme for Minors (Programa de Intervencion con Menores). This initiative, which has been carried out in recent years by the Red Cross, will once again be run by workers from the municipal department with the aim of continuing to achieve its objective: helping young people with difficulties in adapting and coexisting in school and thus preventing academic problems such as truancy. This was announced on Thursday 26th by the councillor for the area, Melisa Ceballos (PP), who pointed out that “we want to go a little further and also be able to intervene with the family and work together, both with the students at the school and with the parents, which is essential and is part of the education and progress of these children”. Now, according to the director of the Social Inclusion department, Miguel Ángel López, “it will be municipal employees from

distribute more than 600,000 euros at Christmas

They sold more than 30 tickets of the 77768, one of the fourth prizes of this traditional extraordinary draw

I.P./M.F. Two lottery shops in Mijas distributed on Sunday 22nd more than 600.000 euros with the fourth prize of the Christmas Lottery. The one in

Calle Los Caños in Mijas Pueblo sold 30 tickets for the 77768, to which must be added a few more from the shop in Calle Margarita, in Las Lagunas. The winners will be able to collect their tickets at the authorised banks, BBVA and CaixaBank. As it is a fourth prize, they will receive 20,000 euros per ‘décimo’ (ticket) and 200,000 euros per series. “They called us from the provincial delegation of the ‘Loterías y Apuestas del Estado’ to inform us that in our administration we had machine printed 30 tickets for this fourth prize. I think I put them in the window, although I am not sure because we have given many numbers, and so far no one has told us anything, so we

guess we have sold them online”, explained the owner of the Lottery Shop Nº 4 (Mijas Pueblo), Victoria Ríos , They also called the son of the owner of the Lottery Shop No. 2 (Las Lagunas), Carlos Moreno , “we came quickly to the shop to put up all the posters with the information, and we don’t know if it was a number that was ordered by machine or a single series that we have received, because this number is not among the one we have fixed here”. On Monday 23rd, there were many who went to their nearest lottery shop to check their tickets, to collect the refund or the ‘pedrea’ prize or to buy a new number for the ‘El Niño’ draw.
