Children’s opinions matter too

Last Wednesday 20th, Mijas commemorated World Children’s Day with the celebration of a children’s plenary session in which 230 fifth grade students from San Sebastian, El Olmo and Los Campanales schools took part. The children acted as representatives of their peers, proposing current issues and topics of interest such as school bullying, measures to save water or neighbourhood care. They not only had the opportunity to present their ideas in the plenary session, but also ended up establishing agreements and commitments with the municipal corporation / C. Luque. NEWS/05

FOREIGNERS invites us to celebrate CHRISTMAS WITH THEM

There are several events, in addition to the charity market, in which many local collectives take part

The Mijas Foreigners Department invites us to celebrate Christmas with them. As every year they have designed an extensive programme of activities which includes two Christmas fairs, the traditional concert of the TAPAS choir, and the FAMA Christmas dance show. “These shows are not only for the residents but also for visitors or even for neighbours from other municipalities. Mijas is becoming more and more attractive every day and from the Town Hall we want to continue to promote all these activities, both organised by us and organised in conjunction with these associations that are so numerous and do so much good”, explained the councillor responsible for the Foreigners Department, Mario Bravo (PP).

The programme will begin on the 1st of December with the Christmas fair organised by the Lions Club in the Butibamba Park in La Cala. This fair will be followed on the 3rd of December by the concert of the TAPAS Choir; on the 9th, the FAMA show; and on the 15th, the Fair of the Domestic Animal Shelter in Mijas, PAD. In addition, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, between the 4th and 28th of December, a charity market will take place in front of La Cala Branch Office, in which different associations and NGOs will participate to raise funds for their causes. Mijas also joins the fifth German Cinema Week, organised by ‘Diario Sur’ next Wednesday 27th, at 19 hours.

WEDNESDAYS and SATURDAYS from DECEMBER 4th to 28th

SOLIDARITY TABLES

Once again, the solidarity tables in La Cala Branch Office Square are part of the programme of activities organised by the Foreigners Department of the Mijas Town Hall. On this occasion, the theme, as usual, is Christmas, so they suggest, through the title ‘Make solidarity your gift this Christmas’, that we go every Wednesday and Saturday, from the 4th to the 28th of December, to stroll around the seaside town in search of presents for our family and friends. “It is a charity market that is held throughout the year, but which intensifies more in December, with the arrival of Christmas and the arrival of many tourists”, said Bravo.

DECEMBER 15TH

PAD MARKET

The Protectora de Animales Domésticos (Domestic Animal Shelter), PAD, will also set up its solidarity tables in La Cala Branch Office Square on the 15th of December from 11:00 to 15:00 hours.

The collective will be offering clothes, Christmas gifts, decorations and accessories, among other things.

NOVEMBER 27TH

Mijas joins the fifth German Cinema Week, organised by ‘Diario Sur’ and which will take place next Wednesday 27th, at 19:00 hours, in the Assembly Hall of the Mijas Town Hall, where the award-winning German-Belgian film ‘Wann wird es endlich wieder so, wie es nie war’, directed by the director Sonja Heiss, will be screened. The film tells the story of Joachim Meyerhoff’s childhood and youth as the son of the director of a psychiatric hospital. “We want to invite all everyone interested in this type of cinema, even if they don’t know German, because the film is subtitled in Spanish, and especially all Germans who live in this area and can enjoy this film for free”, concluded the councillor for foreigners.

DECEMBER 1ST INTERNATIONAL

CHRISTMAS FAIR

One of the first dates will be on the 1st of December with the Christmas fair organised by the Lions Club in the Butibamba Park in La Cala. “We would like to thank the Mijas Town Hall and the Foreigners Department for carrying out this initiative”, said the club’s vice-president, Sandy Tevendly. The event will start at 11 hours and will include craft stalls and a visit from Santa Claus.

DECEMBER 9TH

FAMA DANCE SHOW

The magic of Christmas will flood La Cala Branch Office on the 9th of December, at 13:00 hours, thanks to the artists of the FAMA academy, who will perform their Christmas ballet show to delight and surprise both young and old alike.

There is no Christmas in our municipality without the traditional concert of international Christmas carols organised by the Foreigners department in collaboration with the TAPAS choir. This year’s event will take place on the 3rd of December at 17:00 hours at La Cala Branch Office, where this group with 25 years of experience will delight the audience with a wide repertoire of Christmas music. Admission is free until full capacity is reached.

The Mijas Town Hall, through the Department of Family and Equal Opportunities, joins the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women with a full programme of activities and events. This was announced on Thursday 21st by the mayoress of Mijas and councillor for the area, Ana Mata (PP), who pointed out that the events will begin on the 25th of November at 12 noon with the reading of the institutional manifesto; it will be in the Patio de las Fuentes of the Town Hall.

“It is important to highlight days such as 25N to make society aware of the importance of everyone’s involvement to tackle a scourge such as violence against women. Mijas commemorated World Children’s Day on the 20th with a children’s plenary session with 230 students and chaired by the mayoress, Ana Mata

World Children’s Day is commemorated on the 20th of November, the date on which the UN General

Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959.

The day is dedicated to draw attention to the situation of children, a vulnerable group, and also

Once the issues had been debated, the students presented their conclusions to the plenary session and agreements and commitments were established between them and the municipal corporation. ‘They have done a tremendous analytical work on issues that concern them directly, because children are an essential part of our society and, as has been demonstrated, they have a lot to say and to contribute,’ said the mayoress.

MUNICIPAL CHILDREN’S PLENARY 2024

In Mijas, on this day with greater emphasis, the focus was placed on children, who were the protagonists of a children’s plenary session in which they acted as representatives of their schoolmates and proposed current issues. A total of 230 students of fifth grade from the schools San Sebastián (Mijas Pueblo), El Olmo (La Cala) and Los Campanales (Las Lagunas) took part. The session was coordinated by the councillors for Citizen Participation and Education, and by the schools , which represented the three urban centres.

to publicise their rights, as well as to raise awareness of the importance of working every day for their well-being and development.

Abrahan Cano, from the Campanales school, stated that “we have proposed to take care of the neighbourhood, not to make noise at night and not to throw things on the ground”. For his part, Fabio Luque, de El Olmo, from El Olmo, addressed

the water problem in the plenary session. Participants focused on the fact that “we should not waste water because there is not much, for example, we should not fill the bathtubs”.

As highlighted by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who chaired the plenary session, “the main objective is to promote citizen participation from childhood, promoting a forum that allows them to address issues that affect them directly, learning to debate and reflect, and providing them with tools so that they can make their contributions to the municipal government. In this way, children have a direct means of participation, not only to express their interests, but also to make proposals and set their priorities. At the same time, they learn the need to get in the well-being of their municipality, as well as social commitment”.

Seita Van den Eeden hibits

her work ‘To fly’ at the Folk

Museum

The Folk Museum in Mijas Pueblo hosted last Friday 15th the inauguration of Seita Van den Eeden’s exhibition, a Finnish multidisciplinary artist based in Mijas who has only exhibited previously with the Centro de Artes Mijas and that’s why this exhibition is important for her. It is entitled ‘A volar’ (To fly) and, as well as having birds as the main element, it has a double meaning. “It is also about finding one’s own wings. I used to be a teacher at the Finnish school, but something else always called me, and it’s never too late to find a new profession”, Van den Eeden explained.

The artist is also a singer and wanted to entertain the audience with one of her songs. Among the public was her friend Mag-

On Saturday 16th, the group organised its annual gala dinner, this time in solidarity, at the Hotel Ilunion Hacienda de Mijas SOLIDARITY

The exhibition can be visited until the 9th of December and 10% of the proceeds will be donated to Suspiros de Cuatro Patas

Lobo, who admires both the person and the artist: “She is very cheerful, she is a very talented person. Apart from being an artist, she is also a musician, a singer, a

teacher... she does everything. She is very talented”.

Her creations surprise everyone. Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), a councillor of the government

team, said that “she has a very beautiful painting, a collage, with many birds and she uses a technique that I don’t know but she mixes it with lace and it is very beautiful”. “She is a person who has lived in Mijas for many years and who knows and has many friends in the village”, added the councillor.

Charitable purpose ‘A volar’ can be visited in the Folk Museum in Mijas Pueblo until the 9th of December and you can also buy one of these works, as the pieces are on sale for charity. Ten percent of the proceeds will be donated to the association Suspiros de Cuatro Patas.

The Lions Club supports the victims of the DANA

N.Luque. The Mijas Lions Club is also supporting those who have suffered the consequences of the recent storm caused by the DANA. Last weekend they organised a charity event at the Hotel Ilunion Hacienda de Mijas. Helping and helping, is one of the objectives of this collective that usually organises donations, charity campaigns and solidarity dinners. “We have a gala dinner every year but the idea is to organise other events, in which we usually raise money for the needs of the village” said Guy Rondou, president of the Mijas Lions Club. In a catastrophe of this kind, the president said, the only thing

you can do is to help in any way you can. Around 60 people took

part in this event and last year they raised around 6,000 euros. At the end of the dinner a raffle helped to increase the amount raised.

“The next event we are organising will be a musical event, which is going to take place in the bullring here in Mijas and a professional pianist will be playing”, Rondou pointed out. “Of course you have to be generous, with so much suffering, it’s terrible”, said artist Michael Lehmann

There are many things that can be replaced with the different donations that, like this club, are being collected. This natural disaster has touched many people who have decided to help. “Spain has gone through one of its hardest times and if we can help a little, we are happy to do so” explained Jou Ramirez, a friend of the Mijas Lions Club.
