THE MIHS ISLANDER JUNE 2022

Letter From the editors 3

Dear Class of 2022,

In the past two MIHS Islander Senior Issues, the Editors in Chief have used this space to reflect on all that their class had missed out on. They discussed the good things they would have gotten in a “normal” year, but were stripped away because of COVID-19. And honestly, while we feel for our predecessors, we can’t relate. Yes, we have only experienced two full years of high school, which might be a problem in the future. And yes, we didn’t see our friends for a year, and masks are still a major component of our lives. But what did we really miss out on? A more difficult, stressful rendition of our junior year? Mockumentaries? SAT scores that matter? Also, as a class, we have kinda slayed the past four years. Athletically and musically, we dominated. Photos by Brooks Kahsai Plain and simple, our sports teams will be weaker next year. And maybe you missed it, but the band went to the Tournament of Roses our freshman year, and has played at two Seahawks games since. Crazy. Our other student groups have done great things as well: Student media, for example, has racked up a collection of awards. Robotics, Drama, Leadership, Cheer, DECA, Drill, Mock Trial… you name it. And possibly some of our greatest achievements include our attempts at improving our culture and surrounding community through

walkouts, protests, fundraising and volunteering events. It’s been a year for the revitalization of tradition, as well as an opportunity to start new ones. But, while we love bragging about our successes, the theme for this issue is “moving on.” Obviously, we can (and should) reflect on our time at MIHS and celebrate our accomplishments, but the idea behind the theme is to take all of our triumphs, and apply them to our next stages in life, no matter what they might be. Seniors at the first MIHS assembly We hope you read through each since 2020. reflection, shoutout, thank you and will. And we hope you enjoy seeing the final send offs for teachers, the college map and the final product of the 2021-2022 Islander Staff. High school is an objectively small part of our lives, but often one of the most significant. There’s certainly a fine line between cheesy and heartfelt when writing a departing letter. Either way, we think it’s certain that the Class of 2022 is ready to move on to even better and brighter things. Plus, it’s pretty sick we got a numerically alliterative graduating year. Rolls right off the tongue.

The band marches in the Homecoming Parade, led by drum major Ben Kinder.

Sincerely, Alex & Lena

10 Senior Reflections

THE MIHS ISLANDER JUNE 2022

To: MIHS From: Sophia Dondisch

I used to be scared to share my perspective and make my voice heard for fear of being judged. But as I became older and spent more time at mihs, I realized that sharing my opinions on things and talking with people with different perspectives is what fuels this school to continue changing and adapting.

To: MIHS From: Hutton Bonewitz Be yourself! MI people are very cliquey and quite frankly, its frustrati ng when trying to make friends. Don’t disguise yourself as someone you aren’t , its not worth it. Also, join robotics club, its amazing, the people there are amazing, you won’t regret it.

To: MIHS From: Lucas Vorkoper

Make a fool out of yourself. When I started Drama in freshman year, that was my entire goal. I got up in front of my whole class and went big. And it worked! It’s almost as if people secretly admire any attempt to rid oneself of the way people typically see them. It certainly helped my drama career - once I got over the first hurdle of public embarrassment, the next steps were incredibly natural and exhilarating. Playing all these characters taught me identity is fluid and there really is no point to trying to fulfill your perceived “role”. So whether you are doing Theater or not - get out there, find freedom, and be yourself - whoever that may be in any moment.

THE MIHS ISLANDER JUNE 2022

Senior Reflections 11 To: MIHS From: Brett Fitzwilson Establish good habits as early as possible, ask for help when you need it, and don’t be afraid to chart your own course.

To: MIHS From: Andrew Wu

I believe that robotics club has had the biggest influence on me. I have been on the robotics team for all 4 years of high school and was previously on the middle school robotics team for 2 years. I think that joining robotics club was one of the best things I have done EVER, and it forced me to learn time management, planning, and leadership skills in a way that I probably just wouldn't have experienced anywhere else. Also, it helped me discover my interests more and taught me a lot about gracious professionalism not just in robotics but in all life stuff. Also, we got to build huge robots that go really fast and fling stuff across the room and it's really fun.

To: MIHS From: Gabriel Andres

The thing I’ll miss the most at MI is definitely the staff. It’s so under-recognized the strength of teachers to wake up and face a class who may be inattentive or disrespectful, where there’s a bigger focus on your smallest mistakes than your successes in teaching. Not just the teachers, but staff like the lunch-ladies greeting me with a warm smile every morning is enough to get me through the day. And after-school, our janitors clean up every mess we as students make, whether the boy’s bathroom is filled with paper towel baseballs, or if someone spilled chocolate milk in the lunchroom.

14 Teacher thank yous FROM: Sophia Dondisch TO: Daniela Melgar You have been one of the biggest influences in my life and I can’t put into words how to thank you. You’ve helped through so much and it’s because of you that I will be going to my dream school this upcoming school year. You are such a hard worker and I could tell from the instant that I met you, that you care more about your students than any other teacher at this school does. I have so much love and appreciation for you. You have been my mentor and my support for so long and I hope to never lose you.

FROM: Connor Sun TO: Parker Bixby Dear Mr. Bixby, thank you for the dedication and ethic to make not just our band, but us as humans, better. While nobody is perfect, let it be known that you are someone that I strive to embody: encouraging participation, communication, and community.

Graphics by Lena Hardisty

FROM: Kate Gormley TO: Daniela Melgar Ms. Melgar, You have been one of the most amazing parts of my senior year. I always feel like I am in a safe and unbiased environment and I’m sure many others in your classes can say the same. There is so much more I can thank you for but I just can’t put them in words. I have an immense appreciation for you and I hope you realize the amazing impact you have on all of your students.

FROM: Cole Drayton TO: Anne Fillmore She is awesome. She is so understanding and taught me so much. She touched on things and taught us things you don’t usually learn in English but it was great. She made it fun and real life Friday’s we’re dope. She was the best and she taught so kids can learn their own way. She rocks.

THE MIHS ISLANDER JUNE 2022

teacher thank yous 15

FROM: Audrey Sadlier TO: Joe Bryant Joe, thank you for being the best teacher i’ve ever had. You’ve been so encouraging these past 4 years and I definitely would not be the person I am today without you. I’m going to miss 88.9 and I can’t wait to watch the station grow even more.

FROM: Hutton Bonewitz TO: Chantel Torrey Thank you Ms. Torrey for all your dedicated hours to the robotics club and to your classes. In my freshman year when we met, you taught me so much about metal and jewelry, even though I tried to burn and/or melt everything. Although I am sorry I was never able to get into advanced, I still got to see you working with us in robotics. You work so hard to keep this club alive, and you have created a safe space for all who are interested in robotics and the first ideals. I can’t wait to see you when I drop into club meetings!

FROM: Kayla Levin TO: Toby Swanson Thank you Mr. Swanson for guiding me and supporting me through 4 long years of high school. The support you have given me has helped me grow into the confident leader I am today. I appreciate everything you have done for me, and I am going to miss being in class with you.

FROM: Elliot Jester TO: Jane Stafford Your English class Junior year brought me out of my shell with my work and myself in ways I didn’t think I would ever find at this school, and I am endlessly grateful every day for what I gained from that class.

16 Teacher thank yous

FROM: Drew Fisher TO: Connor Coombs Thank you for your positivity and dedication to teaching. You’re the GOAT! FROM: Stella Prophater TO: Kimberly Griggs To my freshman year chemistry teacher, the most supportive science club advisor, and the teacher who impacted my high school experience the most, No amount of words in a letter can express my appreciation for you, but I will try my best. I’m grateful to have you as my freshman year chemistry teacher. I asked you about clubs related to medicine and you suggested joining the science club and I am so thankful for this experience. Four years later, I reflect on how much growth I have made through this club and I credit you for it all. Being secretary and captain of the science club taught me about leadership and the organization that goes into running a club. The majority of the leadership skills I have formed have come from your guidance. You encouraged me to learn about new interdisciplinary sciences like ornithology and forensics. When it came to competing in the science olympiad, you were the greatest cheerleader for our team. You always saw the best in every student. Thank you for all of the letters of recommendation you wrote for me. For college, job interviews, scholarships, and my Eagle Scout application, I could always count on you to advocate for me. I greatly appreciate your passion for teaching and science, and I hope to positively impact others like you. Good luck with your move to Georgia, I will miss you next year! Go science club!

FROM: Ellie Austin TO: Jane Stafford Ms. Stafford, thank you for being such a great teacher and rolemodel! I’ll miss seeing you in the halls!

FROM: Aimee Graesser TO: Chris Twombley Thanks for the seaglass!! (and like everything else, but enjoy your lunch)

teacher thank yous 17

FROM: Maggie Peterson TO: Shannon Sue Thank you for providing a classroom environment where I genuinely felt like I was learning. Your classes were some of the few classes I took at MIHS where I felt like I was learning things because I was interested in learning them, not because I wanted a good grade on a test. You helped spark an interest in chemistry in me that I’m sure will last for a long time. Thank you for all that you do, and keep on inspiring students.

FROM: Colson Lee TO: Lance Kinsey Thanks Mr. Kinsey for having such a great comp gov class, it was the most fun and also some of the best learning that I’ve had at this high school (who would have thought someone from OHIO of all places could bring good education). I hope you continue to teach an amazing class and go down as a legend and I hope your music taste and fits stay fire.

FROM: Maggie Matheson TO: Mr. Ed Puchalla

Thank you so much for the support and inspiration you have given me over the years. From freshman year, when I came in with a random connection of dates in my head and a distaste for ancient history, to senior year, when I came in with a drawnout and disorganized paper, you have helped me grow academically and personally. In the classes I took with you, I gained an appreciation for the bigger developments throughout history, including the role of geography, religion and government systems. You also challenged me to imagine scenarios as diverse as the trial of Socrates, diplomacy among 18th century empires and the British response to the Belgian colonization of the Congo. Throughout my high school career, you pushed me to develop my writing skills. You introduced me to National History Day and mentored me through three years of competition. I developed not only research and writing skills but perseverance and confidence (still working on that). Thank you for always being available to talk through things with me. I really appreciate everything you have done.

When I enrolled in Journalism as a freshman, I made a name for myself as the small, Seahawks-obsessed band kid. Football was all I wanted to talk and write about, and Twom reminded me every day how “uncool” it was that I chose to spend my Thursday and Friday evenings playing saxophone (I think he was just jealous). And, well, there was nothing I could do to distract my peers from my scrawny build and 4-foot-11 stature. Fast forward four years, and I have grown significantly as a person. Notably, I’m eight inches taller, I have developed interests that go beyond Seattle sports teams and I have taken a hiatus from marching band to focus on leading a newspaper staff. But looking back, have I really changed all that much? I haven’t stopped writing about football (interviewing Seahawks legend Doug Baldwin remains a highlight of my journalism career), I cover every marching band event there is to cover and Lena, Max and Sandra told me I have “short-person energy,” even though I’m taller than all three of them (OK fine, Max and I are the same height). I’m 180 words in and I still haven’t gotten to the point, so here it is: Journalism didn’t force me to change. Journalism took me in as the “short Seahawks band kid,” and gave me a chance to thrive in my own way. And sure, I got roasted plenty. But the MIHS Islander has always been my second family, complete with siblings that I have to drive everywhere, a large dining room table and countless memories. I will miss this family more than anything. And Twom, I can’t thank you enough for being the best mentor one could ask for, and for putting up with me for four years. Keep on killing it.

MAx Hense

Distilling four years of my high school experience into 250 to 300 words is a hard thing to do. I wasn’t sure, initially, how to possibly explain what I will miss most about this program after I leave it behind, or how to describe how deeply and profoundly this class and community has impacted me. I realize, now, it’s in the small things. A collection of moments and experiences that provided me an anchor through some of the most tumultuous times of my life. Twom microwaving us popcorn for the long work days, funny messages on the whiteboard meant to brighten each other’s days, checking in just because we can. Christmas playlists and weekend grind seshes and the quietness in the workroom when seventeen people put their all into a product they care about. I wasn’t sure what community was until I found this class. It was a word I could define, but not one I understood. Four years in, and three not at all fire safe classrooms later, when I imagine my life without the MIHS Islander I draw a blank. To my fellow editors, what an insane ride it’s been – wishing you all the best next year, I have the utmost faith that you will carry on the legacy we’ve left behind. To my Editors in Chief, I love you both very much, I’m endlessly grateful I got to spend four entire years of my life with you two. To Twom, thank you for pushing me to grow in ways I didn’t think I could, and thank you for never giving up on me, as terrible and cliche as it sounds. The passion this paper has inspired in me is something I’ll carry a long time after I leave Mercer Island.

While I haven’t been in journalism quite as long as some other seniors I have still learned a lot in my time taking journalism. Last year I initially took journalism to learn a new writing style and try something new. While most people (including myself) did not think I was coming back for the advanced class I decided to stick with it. I have bonded with so many people in this class I probably never would have. In this class I’ve found a community like no other in high school. Everyone is there to support and help each other along the journey. I have learned many things not only about writing but about life itself. I am so thankful for the people this class has brought me and I know that I will have people I can rely on when I leave. Thank you all for showing me new perspectives and lifestyles I will take with me. To everyone I’ve met along the way, thank you for everything you’ve taught me. I aspire to work as hard as you do every single day. I will remind myself of your drive and determination when I need it most. Hopefully your wisdom is infectious because I’ll need it. Don’t worry I’ll be back next year with snacks and lots of love for you all. Twom, I know I give you a hard time but it’s only because I know you can take it. Thank you so much for always handing it right back to me and pushing me to be the best I can be. I have so much respect for you and I have so many life lessons I will take with me. I wish you all the best and I will miss this team dearly. Try not to miss me too much :)

It is almost ridiculous how much I will miss this class. Spending evenings perched around our table like birds on a powerline, putting our blood, sweat, and musk into indesign pages. Feeling the electric undercurrent and pride that ran through the room on distribution day. Monday’s disturbing daily check-ins that offered glimpses into each other’s lives. Listening to Twom’s seemingly endless catalog of geographical facts. I will miss it all. It’s so strange how quickly a CCR pastime turned into my vocation. Journalism is where I learned to sit up straight and stand with my feet firm beneath me— when I think of who I am today, journalism is inseparable from that. The notoriously windowless journ room has served as an axis that we could all spin around, where some of our best moments happened through not the exchange of words, but space. It’s safe to say this class was a sanity saver. A homebase where you could always find laughter and a heinous amount of one-liners courtesy of Twom. I feel so lucky and proud to have been a part of the family (and prison) that is high school journalism. Everyone in journ is a keeper, I’m still in awe at how such a brilliant group of people can be condensed into one tiny room. To past and present journ peers, I cherish everything you’ve done for me and will remain impressed by your influences on this paper. It’s corny as hell, but this class, its people and advisor have been a tremendous influence that words just fail to describe. So even though it doesn’t do justice to what I hope to express, let me say thank you— I love you all so very much. I will take these four years to heart, and carry all the wisdom they garner with me long past For a long time, my dream was to be an artist. graduation (and the scent of microwavable popcorn will always hold a special sort of sentimentality). Joining journalism freshman year, I had my eyes set

on the role of cartoonist someday, no more and no less. Fortunately, after a month the fiery righteous passion of political journalism punched me through a wall and I decided I would now eat, sleep, and breathe “journ”. Hyperbole aside, the journalism program has been a remarkable and deeply impactful part of my high school experience. Because of community, color palettes, the long awaited whiteboard, true friendship, the “love is love” blanket, frustration, popcorn and finding a place to belong. Journalism gave me a place for my voice to be heard, to make a real impact as a student. It’s helped me find my true passions, and given me skills I’ll use for the rest of my life. Journalism has made me who I am today, and who I will be in the future. Twom, thank you for everything. For your mentorship, willingness to listen and always having my back. For letting me eat snacks in your office, for being the best teacher I’ve ever had and for setting me up for success. I will miss my editors, I will miss my staff writers and I will miss my adviser. I will miss The MIHS Islander dearly. I will miss our fire hazard closet of a production room, the excitement of distribution day and the fact I could look forward to something every day. I cannot wait to see what it does next. To next year’s staff: I know you will do amazing things, and remember to hold shift.

When I joined journalism my sophomore year, I did not realize just how much new knowledge I would gain from it. This knowledge came in many different forms, from layout and page design, to the ins-and-outs of AP Style, to the ethics of interviews, and valuable leadership skills from serving as an editor. Most importantly, I found confidence from journalism, a place where I felt welcome to share my opinions and where they actually had a place on paper. In this class, huddled around too-small tables in ill-ventilated rooms, I came to understand the importance of having difficult conversations. Each week, we discussed current issues in our community that none of my other classes would dare to take on. Through interviewing peers, staff members, and neighbors, I have felt lucky to be given intimate access into my community from different perspectives. To my fellow editors, thank you for making this class something that I looked forward to every day. It is a special experience to be part of a group of dedicated individuals collectively working their hardest to produce a quality product. You guys are real ones for coming to school early for meetings, bringing snacks for distribution days, and giving me InDesign tips (it still confuses me, even three years later). To Twom, thank you for your mentorship and genuine care for my success. Your unwavering honesty pushes me to exceed my own expectations, and I will miss your dry and slightly obscure jokes. While this newspaper was the cause of many late nights making pages, and many treacherous drives along East Mercer to deliver papers, I would not trade the experience for anything. Good luck to next year’s staff, beware of the oxford comma, avoid Minion Pro and definitely expect some visits from me :)

Teacher Reflections on the Class of 2022 Jamie Robertson

Fondly. I am grateful they bathe frequently and don’t skimp on deodorant. They were clearly been impacted by the loss of learning during their junior year because of the pandemic. They were less jaded and more enthusiastic learners. At the same time, academically they started the year with some deficits. Overall, they are a cheerful and caring collection of individuals. Go and see live music, dance, read for pleasure, attempt a digital diet, and be wary of tribal traditions that require one to suspend critical thinking and personal responsibility.

Dino Annest

Spirited, survivors, and a great number of hardworking individuals who care more about the world around them than about their own closed circle . . . Individuals going out of their way to help others without prompting. I have a student who created a study guide for the AP exam -- when I told her “good luck” two days before the test, she let me know that she wasn’t taking it --I was dumbfounded. She had just made a huge document to help her classmates on a test that she was not even registered for. That’s what I have seen this year, and that is what I will remember. Listen to your heart and your gut, and then act. Get proactive about your country and about your future.

Alex Perry

A class that has kept me on my toes my first year teaching at MIHS.

I just remember some of the helpful conversations with students that gave me an insight into the bubble that is Mercer Island. I worked in a completely different environment and hearing about the culture of this island was eyeopening. I will also remember Drew Fisher and James Peterson asking me frequently what my gamertag is and what games I’ll be playing so they could find me. You have choices. You’ll always have choices. Think critically and with an open mind. Just make sure you are okay with the choice you make.

I will remember the Class of 2022 with a single word resiliency. This is a class who, for the majority of their high school years were asked to adapt, adapt again, and adapt yet again. In each case they showed up, tried their best, engaged, and demonstrated the flexibility, patience, and determination to make this unwanted reality work! I actually have a second word for the Class of 2022 - inspirational. They inspire me! My favorite memories include the rapid leadership development by our Seniors. This is a class that left high school halfway through their sophomore year and did not have the luxury to watch, be mentored by, nor be trained as to what a student school leader looks like by their upper class peers. They missed those learning times on how to lead with the strategies involved with leadership. Yet they dove into this year with a dedicated purpose to

Daniela Melgar

A fierce and resilient group who came back from a wild pandemic roller coaster ready to be in person and shine their lights on all of us. Drama students-- You are in my heart. I will remember your upbeat attitude, even when we were making Zoom theatre. I will remember the leadership you immediately jumped into when we returned this year, helping to guide the younger students through what it means to be an in-person Drama student. I will remember the joy on your faces when we were able to finally perform live theatre in person! Also, thank you for your love, compassion, and support during a very difficult time in my personal life. <3 English 12 students-- My social justice warriors. I am so grateful you were my first group in this course. Your hearts are strong, bold, and fierce. Thank you for making this first year of teaching this class so motivating and inspiring. It will be challenging for future classes to fill your shoes. Go change the world. We need all of you running it. Also, thank you for your love, compassion, and support during a very difficult time in my personal life. <3 Don’t wish away your time. It goes too fast. Live in all the moments as they are happening, even the boring and strenuous ones.

My English 12-ers are fabulous humans. You worked hard after two tumultuous Covid years, yet also brightened every day with fun and laughter and being real together. Thank you for trusting me, and our class, with your honest truths and so often courageously sharing or daring to ask big questions. I learned a lot about the true diversity of MIHS students, and how important it is that all voices are heard, and everyone feels known. Engaged and passionate discussions about complex, critical issues. Real conversations about life. Laughter. Lots of tea and snacks. I’ll miss listening to the Wake Up with our friend, Niall, with you. Be good humans. Be kind - to others and to yourself. Use your privileges to serve others and make the world a better place. The world needs you to do your best. Seriously. Also, have fun, be safe, make good choices. I believe in you.

be the leaders in our school and to set the tone and climate of our building. My favorite memories are watching that student leadership - DECA veterans helping our new business students with competition, Band section leaders helping our freshman with the ‘shorts’ for marching band season, Leadership students planning and leading assemblies, and so many other examples. Our Seniors embraced this year and created amazing memories for everyone. My advice for the Class of 2022 is to say ‘yes’. Say ‘yes’ to opportunities. Say ‘yes’ to people asking you to volunteer, to help, to share your talents. Say ‘yes’ to things that challenge you and maybe scare you a little. These spaces, even little steps, out of your comfort zone will bring such RICHNESS to your lives.

24 senior shoutouts From: Jonathan Frostifer To: Ivy Micheau Dearest Ivy, You have been with me through thick and thin and for that I appreciate you so much. We can be very different in many aspects but we have always been inseparable. I love you so much. ok, bye.

From: Cello Admirer To: Marti Flickenger Not only a phenomenal cello player, but an amazing friend. Thank you for always being willing to step and help out. Orchestra would not be the same without you!

graphics by sandra pedersen From: Kelly Cotter To: Tommy Frink Tommy! The chem/calc combo was rough to say the least but there’s no one else I’d rather figure out how to do related rates and ICE tables with. When I first met you I never would have thought that by the end of this year I would consider you a second brother but hey we both have the same passion for Spelling Bee, Netball, staying up until 2am studying, and the great state of Michigan. I can’t wait to see you at the Cornell vs. Lehigh games next year and to hear about your advanced STEM courses. I’ll be sure to tell you about my PE classes! Very grateful for you, but still very mad about question 19.

THE MIHS ISLANDER JUNE 2022 From: Wheels To: Alexandra Van Blerkom VB. Thank you so much for everything you have done for both me and the robotics club. You have supported us throughout your four years with the club, and helped me specifically when I needed it (even though you didn’t know it). Thank you for offering your garage to the club during covid for the club to continue working on its robot. You are the best CTO we could have ever asked for, always stepping in when needed, offering assistance, and just being overall an excellent person. I can’t wait to see what you do down the road. From: A friend To: Kayla Levin Thank you for all your hard work in ASB these past 4 years. The women in leadership positions all around MIHS keep this school running smoothly and are rarely acknowledged, so thank you for all your hard work!

From: Sophia Dondisch To: Jack Drake Jack, you are one of the kindest people I have vert met and I am so lucky I get to call you my friend. You are so damn smart and talented I know you will go very far in life. Without you I would not be the person that I am today, and I would not have had such a good time in drama without you.
