Brewed since 1955 Sussex Best Bitter has evolved over decades, satisfying the expectations of the people of Sussex and its adjoining counties.

Harvey’s Sussex Best is full of character which is down to the perfectly blended combination of the four fine hops and two malts.

It’s full of caramel and chocolate with background notes of orange peel and a palette refreshing subtle bitterness that pairs perfectly with a big punchy curry. Old Ale was Harvey’s Brewery’s first beer to win a National Award in 1952. The beer is celebrated by the Brewery’s annual ‘Dancing in the Old’ event with local Morris Men and Women joining us in our brewery yard the first weekend of October.

Mahogany-red in colour, this veteran beer style has dried fruit, currants, sultanas and suggestions of milk chocolate on the nose.

There is dried fruit, a hint of chocolate and caramel on the palate, as well as a vinous hint in the background. It has a medium-bodied mouth feel allied to a smooth creaminess and an appealing (but not cloying) sweetness. Instead of a mid afternoon cup of tea, try a glass with Madeira cake, where the beer’s character acts as an extra ingredient.

Also try with a roast beef sandwich but with piccalilli instead of mustard; or put half a pint in a beef stew and drink the rest alongside.

BREWING THE BEST BEER

OLYMPIA

Malt, water, yeast and hops are the fundamental ingredients for brewing today, but how Harvey’s operates, where we source our ingredients, and where our by-products go, are what make our beers distinct.

ALC

The brewery building was designed in such a way as to aid the brewing process, this seemed logical at the time of construction, and even now being gravity fed allows us to save energy from not using pumps to assist in production.

At Harvey’s we start a brewing day by pouring sacks of malt into our mill, crushing it to a fine grist and exposing the starch in the grain; this is needed to be broken down into the sugars that our yeast will feast on during fermentation.

MALT: Our malt is sourced from Maltsters in East Anglia, UK. Our contracts are set years in advance so we can guarantee a continued supply of the finest malt for our beers.

The malt grist and water (liquor) are released into our Mash Tuns where the exposed starches from the grist are isothermally mashed, kept at a single temperature. This process enables enzymes in the malt to convert from starch into sugar, creating a sugar solution known as ‘wort’.

WATER: Rainfall which has filtered over the Sussex chalk downs is drawn from our artesian well up into the liquor reservoir in the Harvey’s Tower. Our own water supply is important as it gives our beers a unique flavour, and our own source will preserve Harvey’s brewing for generations to come.

FOOD PAIRING Olympia with Chocolate Dessert and Olympia Infused Ice Cream

ORIGIN First produced in 2005 to celebrate our major summer award at Kensington Olympia for Best Bitter. It became an instant hit. Olympia Golden Ale is a very refreshing summer ale with a balanced complexity. Especially appreciated when served at 11 degrees Celsius.

The yeast; a living single celled microorganism, is added to the wort and it will feed on the fermentable sugars, converting them to alcohol. Over the course of the following week the yeast continues to ferment and replaces the sugars with alcohol and Carbon dioxide, creating beer!

OUR YEAST: For over half a century we have fermented our beers using a yeast strain which is now unique to us. The crop from each week’s brewing is re-pitched into the following weeks. We believe our yeast contributes to approximately 50% of our final beer flavour.

The resulting brew is sent off for preparation and then racked, kegged, canned or bottled by the Harvey’s Brewing team to present a traditional, handmade, lovingly crafted beer to our customers.

In the final of MasterChef I wanted to put together a chocolate dessert with a rich ice cream that would soften the bitter chocolate.

The golden ale ice cream came to life and it was a real winner. I tried several golden ales but the Olympia had a burst of summer and when I popped the cap there was a distinct hit of pineapple, grapefruit and even a touch of bubblegum.

Served chilled this is a versatile easy drinking ale that pairs with rich desserts, but also just as well as fresh shellfish and Mediterranean food such as saffron rich Paella.

It’s also great with spicy foods and is extremely quaffable.

A great beer.

The converted ‘wort’ gets transferred into one of two Coppers in our Copper House. A Copper is a very large kettle like vessel. This is when our locally sourced whole hops are added to the brew to contribute flavour, bitterness, and aroma. The mixture is then boiled and cooled before heading to our fermenting tuns.

LOCAL WHOLE HOPS: We use local whole hops from Sussex, Kent and Surrey, placing contracts with local farms years in advance to ensure an ongoing supply. Our partnerships with our hop growers span many years, and we believe it is important to commit and invest in our local suppliers.

At this point in the process leftover ‘spent’ hops from the Coppers are filtered into a hop back. They are shoveled out and collected for distribution to local allotments and nurseries; the same as our spent grains which go to Plumpton Agricultural College to feed their cows.

The fermenting tuns are where the beer evolves and alcohol is created. This begins after we pitch our unique yeast strain, skimmed from a previous brew, in with the now cooled wort.

ORIGIN Armada Ale has a pronounced yet balanced hop character, derived from Fuggle and Golding hops.

The beer has floral, herbal and biscuit flavours. Both quiche and pasta have a herbal character and are also wheat based which complements the malty biscuit character of the beer. The beer’s biscuit character can also be mirrored in the sponge of the cake.

ORIGIN Dark Mild accounted for 75% of beer produced during the decade following the Second World War and was the mainstay of a generation in the public bar.

This is a low alcohol beer with a light body but plenty of nutty and chocolate flavour. With the Nut Roast there are complementary flavours.

In the Shepherd’s Pie the meat has caramelised as it cooked which matches the caramel malt flavours of the beer. Tiramisu with its rich chocolate and coffee flavours find a friend with the roasted character of this dark mild.

Forward’s Choice and Fish ‘n’ Chips

ORIGIN

It is easy to convert drinkers to this 3.5% very moreish bitter, which is named Forward’s Choice in honour of local and national Rugby clubs.

Kiss celebrates ‘the returned kiss’: In 2000 Rodin’s Kiss was returned to Lewes for an exhibition having been resident in the Town Hall but rejected by the townsfolk some eighty years previously.

I don’t think there are many Pale Ales that stand up quite like this one. It’s the perfect example of knowing when you’ve got a good thing and you understand the centuries of craft.

The name ‘Porter’ is thought to derive from the beers’ popularity with street and river porters of the 18th Century.

THE HARVEY’S STORY Harvey’s Brewery is the oldest independent brewery in Sussex. We are a family business, and the brewery has been in the custodianship of John Harvey’s descendants since 1790, with five family members from the seventh and eighth generations working here today.

1790

This beer has big savoury flavours of coffee, soya sauce and licorice. The food choice needs to have big flavours too. With each of the food choices the dense texture is important and they each need a beer that has oomph. Porter certainly has that!

The name of Harvey has long been associated with the supply of beers, wines and spirits in Sussex.

Records of the 1790’s recall the delivery of Old Red Port, Sherry and Claret in Lewes and its surrounding villages.

1928

Alice May Harvey Smith (fourth generation) is elected Harvey’s first Chairperson. She and her sisters make two crucial appointments; their nephew Eric Carlyon Rundle, and in 1938, Anthony Jenner a fourth-generation brewer from R & H Jenner’s Brewery, South London.

1899

Harvey’s experience business setbacks in the shadow of many other contemporary brewing companies such as Watneys, Charrington and Whitbread.

1820

John Harvey started brewing as a seasonal sideline activity in Bear Yard, opposite the current brewery.

With his sons, Henry, Edwin and William, he acquired the current Bridge Wharf Site in 1838 for the price of £3,100 and developed “Harvey & Son”.

1859

Henry Harvey brewed Porters, Stouts and strong Mild Ales for distribution among 17 family owned public houses in Sussex. These were prosperous days for enterprising brewers.

1996

A fire devastates the brewery.

Offices were temporarily moved to what is now the John Harvey Tavern.

The brewery was restored in 1998 but, many important and historical files were lost to the fire.

2000

Another flood in Lewes deluges the brewery. Harvey’s were told that the brewery wouldn’t be up and running again for nine months due to the damage, but were back and brewing in nine days.

2002

Audrey Elder becomes Chairperson succeeding Anthony Jenner. Adele Smith (niece of Audrey) and Julia Prescott (daughter of Audrey) sit on the company’s Board of Directors.

1952

Harvey’s wins first award for XXXX on Draught (Old Ale)

1957

Harvey’s receive yeast from Tadcaster Brewery after the breakdown of the Pure Yeast Company. This same yeast strain, 3000 generations later, is still used today.

1960

Catastrophic Floods leave Cliffe High Street under water for nearly a week, the brewery carries on despite severe disruption to production.

2006–2011

Eighth generation family members Zoë Prescott and Peter Nicholas join the company, and Hamish Elder becomes Harvey’s Chairperson.

1980

1862

John Harvey dies, and Henry and Edwin die within days of each other.

William runs the business alone with Henry Titlow-Barrett from Wethereds Brewery, Marlow. William dies in 1868.

1881

The present Gothic Victorian brewery was built under the supervision of Titlow-Barrett, having been designed by famed brewery architect, William Bradford.

Eric Rundle passes away, leaving the company in the hands of his daughters Audrey, Joan, and Eileen, (sixth generation) and Chairman Anthony Jenner. Miles Jenner becomes Head Brewer, and in 1981 Eric’s Grandson, Hamish Elder, son of Audrey, joins the company.

ORIGIN ORIGIN A beer celebrating England’s Father of Palaeontology. In 1821, Lewes doctor and fossil collector Gideon Mantell’s understanding of fossilised Iguanodon teeth, discovered in a Sussex quarry, heralded the start of the classification of prehistoric reptiles.

BITTER

This attractive ruby ale has so much going on in the nose, with beguiling notes of caramel and fruitcake coming to the fore. On the palate it’s deliciously sweet, full and rounded, which could become overpowering were it not for the foil of crisp hop bitterness finishing it off.

It’s an elegant, outrageously seductive match with mature cheddar, dancing with it in a way a good chutney does. It also pairs wonderfully with Viennese pastries.

First brewed to celebrate the popular local Morris Side who may be found dancing at local hostelries between May to October. Its release coincides with the May Day celebrations each year.

Nuttiness and caramel are the main flavours of this beer so food that has those flavour characteristics will be complemented by the beer.

Local Whole Hops

Rainfall which has filtered over 30 years through the Sussex chalk downs is drawn from our artesian well some sixty feet below the brewery, and stored in the liquor reservoir at the top of the Harvey’s Tower.

Harvey’s use whole hops from Sussex, Kent and Surrey and we have worked closely with our hop farmers for many years.

They are delivered to us in 70kg Hop Pockets

Having our own supply preserves a regional flavour to our beers, and should preserve Harvey’s brewing for generations to come. Water is replenished by the South Downs, and drawn up from Harvey’s wells

Malt

Yeast At over 60 years old the Harvey’s yeast strain is unique to our brewery. Countless generations of yeast cells from our 1957 consignment have passed through our fermenting room, as the crop from each week’s brewing is re-pitched into the next.

We brew with Maris Otter malted barley, the product of a long programme of cross selection dating back to the early 1900s, and much prized by cask ale brewers.

Harvey’s are aware of the need to create an environmentally stable business. Many factors that contribute to our green credentials have always been part of our traditional production methods and local partnerships, which have been inherent in the brewing industry for many years.

We have 544 Solar Panels on our Depot roof. The panels generate an estimated 92,000kWhs of electricity a year, with any surplus feeding back into the local grid.

Brewed to commemorate the bicentenary of Thomas Paine’s “The Rights of Man”. It is thought that Paine helped to draft the American Declaration Of Independence. An eponymous political radical, he was an Excise Officer in Lewes between 1768–1774.

Tom Paine is a rich and complex beer with some big flavours. It has the hops to cut through the texture of the Sunday Roast and distinct toffee flavours that harmonise with the caramelisation of the roast as it cooks.

ORIGIN A play on the name of another very famous brown ale, Lewes Castle is named after Lewes’ own Norman fortress, built after William’s conquest of 1066.

Vegetarian lasagne also caramelises so Tom Paine’s flavours are complementary.

Salted Caramel pudding is a study in contrasts with the bitterness of the beer.

Light amber in colour, this emboldened IPA has potent hop notes on the nose, suggestive of ripe orange marmalade alongside the sweetness of tinned mandarins. The bold English hop character continues on the palate, with more citrus, plus a grassiness and a restrained sweetness redolent of a Bakewell tart. The finish has a dryness that suggests a witty aside in the pub, a putdown said with affection and compassion.

How about trying it with roast chicken, roast potatoes and peas — the beer adds a succulence to the chicken, with its bitterness cutting through the fat.

ORIGIN Originally brewed to commemorate the gallant work of the Fire Brigade during the fire at the brewery in July 1996 and was originally called ‘Firecracker’.

We now brew this for the bonfire boys and belles of Lewes for the November 5th celebrations each year.

Brewed for bonfire night, this chestnut-coloured ale has bags of toffee and caramel on the nose, and develops on the palate with rich, fruity sweetness and a pleasing toastiness, happily evoking bonfire toffee rather than the bonfire itself.

It complements the caramelisation of grilled or barbecued meats quite wonderfully, and harmonises really well with ginger and cinnamon, making it a perfect match for any kind of tagine.

Full of treacle, smoke and dried fruits this is a real peaty serious stout. There are so many foods you could pair Harvey’s Black Stout, with a dryness that refreshes the palate, it acts as an aperitif.

For me this is crying out to sit alongside game especially the big iron-y hit of rare venison, root vegetables and rich gravy. It’s the smouldering smokey, woody hit that brings this to life. It is a proper drink.

Wharf IPA and Frittata

ORIGIN Wharf IPA is brewed using hop varieties grown in Sussex and Kent. The imagery on the can is of the Wharf opposite the brewery site which sits on the river Ouse where the brewery was established in 1790.

These hints pair perfectly with a rich meaty dish such as roast lamb, and also have the power to cut through and enhance a quiche or frittata.

Its toffee malt base and just a touch of caramelised sugar perfectly complement the sweet notes in the sauce, and bring out the very best in those tastiest, crispiest and slightly scorched edges of the tofu.

English hops are considered by some to be less exciting than their American counterparts, but this beer showcases them in all their grassy, herby, spicy glory, providing a wonderfully complex and pleasing aroma. On the palate it evokes the English hedgerow, with hints of mint, grass, pepper, rosemary and figs.

Nothing beats a bowl of noodles for a quick and tasty weeknight supper. I like them stirfried with tofu and vegetables, and drenched in a glossy sesame and chilli sauce. A can of Malt Brown is more than robust enough to stand up to this tasty dish.

ORIGIN This strong barley wine is reminiscent of the “October Ales” which were brewed in domestic brew houses during the reign of Elizabeth I. Based on the iconic Elizabethan Ale, a firm favourite that has been in production at Harvey’s for over 65 years.

There is patience here and it makes for a really complex dark full bodied ale with a real depth of flavour.

The sweet bouncy malt and savoury finish makes it perfect for a big traditional ploughman’s or plate of strong cheese and dry smoked ham.

There’s a rich sweetness that could mellow a bold blue cheese and would most certainly lift a smokey plate of barbecued meats.

Harvey’s produce a range of award-winning specialty beers that are available in bottle year round and very rarely in cask.

Some of these premium beers mature in tank over long periods; our Imperial Extra Double Stout is in tank for 18 months, and Prince of Denmark for nine months.

The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet and sour beer. Steeped in the depths of chocolate and coffee, this brew will improve and develop in complexity.

A strong, dark beer; think treacle toffee, mocha coffee, and smokiness.

Brown, amber and black malts are mixed with pale ale malts to give this beer its complexity and depth.

Elizabethan Ale was originally produced in celebration of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Sweet Sussex Stout is a lush, sweet stout and a fine example of a style now rarely produced but extremely popular during the mid-twentieth century.

It has an aroma of burnt sugar and a soft, rounded, sweet palate offset by a slightly burnt aftertaste.

A traditional Brown Ale. Sweet and dark with a nutty palate and discreet bitterness.

WILD HOP BLONDE

A sharp edge of citrus cuts through earthy background flavours. Beautifully balanced, but a bit on the wild side – ‘Sussex Born and Bred!’

Wild Hop is brewed with the aptly named ‘Sussex Hop’ – originally discovered growing wild in a hedgerow in Sussex, but now cultivated as a variety in its own right. It is supplemented with Cascade hops grown in the UK. 34

WINES Before Harvey’s became the Brewery it is today, the company was already an established Wine and Spirit Merchant, with records showing the delivery of Old Red Port, Sherry and Claret in Lewes and its surrounding villages in the 1790’s.

The Harvey’s Brewery Shop is located at the front of Harvey’s Georgian Brewhouse and supplies Harvey’s beers fresh from the brewery in returnable bottles, cans, mini-kegs, and for take-away on draught in refillable containers ranging in size from four pints up to 36 pint polypins.

Today Harvey’s Wine Buyer Andrew Harris sources wines from small producers the world over. Being located in Sussex we are lucky to be in close vicinity to many English Wine producers who supply us with their award-winning vintages.

Our wide selection of wines is carefully curated, with new additions approved by our tasting team on a quarterly basis. We believe in a balance of value and quality, and this is reflected throughout our range.

Our shop team arrange a number of Beer, Spirit, Wine, and Shop events throughout the year, in association with industry experts and suppliers.

Harvey’s Gin Harvey’s Hop and Malt Gins are produced from English malted barley mashed at the brewery in Lewes, using exactly the same system that initiates production of our award winning beers. The resultant sugars are then transported to be fermented and distilled. A special blend of botanicals is added to the Malt Gin and a separate distillation of freshly picked Sussex hops gives the Hop Gin its defining character.

SEASONAL ALES Harvey’s seasonal ales are a variety of beers we brew to cater for each month of the year.

Beautiful Harvey Horses ‘Honour’ and ‘Valour’ can be seen in and around Sussex at multiple events, or acting as our horse and cart dray delivering beer to Lewes and Brighton pubs.

Lead by Steve Tubbs and John Lakin from DrayHorse Shires, they have deservedly won a number of awards over the years and are a treasured part of the Harvey’s team.

BARS Find Harvey’s Hop Bars at a number of local events, beer festivals, and private hires throughout the year. These units have been custom built to reflect a wide range of sizes to suit our bar travelling requirements!
