Deer Lake and a recently ƌĞŶŽǀĂƚĞĚ ƐƉĂ ǁŚĞƌĞ ŵLJ wife kept using words like ͞ĂǁĞƐŽŵĞ͕ ďĞƐƚ ĞǀĞƌ͟ ŽŶ ƐĞǀĞƌĂů ŽĐĐĂƐŝŽŶƐ͘ Boyne Highlands: The Heather, along with The Hills, the Donald Ross Memorial and The Moor – the only Boyne course I haven’t tried – make up a quad of courses that can be squeezed into a weekend if needed or can Įůů ĂŶ ĞŶƟƌĞ ǁĞĞŬ ŽĨ ŶĞǀĞƌͲ boring replays.

The Heather (where you can rent golf boards) has its great history for design, playability and challenge all rolled into one, but The Hills is my favorite. The layout is wide open on most holes ĂŶĚ ĚŽƩĞĚ ǁŝƚŚ ĂƩƌĂĐƟǀĞ ďƵƚ ƐŽŵĞƟŵĞƐ ƚƌĞĂĐŚĞƌŽƵƐ bunkering. The 10th green complex is super cool for a risk-reward short par 4, and ƚŚĞ ϭϯth tee is also one of the highest points in northern Michigan with an incredible inland view for miles. The Golf Channel’s Big Break X was ĮůŵĞĚ ƚŚĞƌĞ͘ Boyne Highlands was ŶĂŵĞĚ ďLJ 'ŽůĨ͘ĐŽŵ ƌĞĂĚĞƌƐ ĂƐ ƚŚĞ ďĞƐƚ h͘^͘ 'ŽůĨ ZĞƐŽƌƚ ĨŽƌ sĂůƵĞ͘ /Ŷ ĂĚĚŝƟŽŶ ƚŽ ƚŚĞ ϵͲŚŽůĞ ƵŶĚĞƌͲƚŚĞͲůŝŐŚƚƐ Ƶī Link course, the Highlands

ĂůƐŽ ĨĞĂƚƵƌĞƐ ĂĐƟǀŝƟĞƐ ůŝŬĞ zip lines, biking trails, horseback riding and the Young American’s Dinner Theatre.

Bay Harbor Golf Club: Bay ,ĂƌďŽƌ ŝƐ ŶĂƟŽŶĂůůLJ ĂĐĐůĂŝŵĞĚ for is three 9s; the Quarry, the Preserve and the wow factor of the Links course elevated ǀŝĞǁƐ ŽĨ ƐĐĞŶŝĐ >ŝƩůĞ dƌĂǀĞƌƐĞ Bay and Lake Michigan.

Words can’t appropriately describe the awe in traversing ĚŽǁŶ ŚŽůĞƐ EŽ͘ ϭ͕ ϯ͕ ϰ ĂŶĚ 7 overlooking the bay from high atop the Links course

– highlighted even more if ƚŚĞƌĞ ŝƐ Ă ƌŝƐŝŶŐ Žƌ ƐĞƫŶŐ sun on the water. The Quarry course is tough and rugged, with many holes cut and shaped inside an old rock quarry. The Preserve balances the adventure with a more ƚƌĂĚŝƟŽŶĂů ŶŽƌƚŚĞƌŶ DŝĐŚŝŐĂŶ tree-lined layout that’s fun and gorgeous.

BOYNE PGA professionals compete to raise dollars for local ĐŚĂƌŝƟĞƐ ĂŶĚ ƐĐŚŽŽůƐ

TEAM BOYNE’s annual Harbor Cup golf event is held each fall, when PGA professionals from KzE 'ŽůĨ͛Ɛ ƉƌŽƉĞƌƟĞƐ ĂƌĞ ƉŝƩĞĚ ĂŐĂŝŶƐƚ W' professionals from Petoskey area golf courses in a fun 54-hole Ryder Cup style format.

Boyne Golf can be found on the PGA Tour as sponsor of Petoskey native Joey Garber.

A new deal was signed with Garber through the 2020 season.

June 17 also serves as the ĮŶĂů ƉƌĂĐƟĐĞ ĚĂLJ ĨŽƌ ƚŚĞ top amateurs playing in the 108th Michigan Amateur Championship, which will be contested that week, Tuesday through Saturday, on the North Course at Oakland Hills. hƉ ĮƌƐƚ ŝŶ Ɖƌŝů͕ ƚŚĞ Detroit Golf Club — one of the GAM’s original

14-member clubs and the site of the PGA Tour’s return to Michigan for the 2019 Rocket Mortgage Classic — will host ƚŚĞ ' D ŶŶƵĂů DĞĞƟŶŐ on Monday, April 22. In 2019, four standard events are planned in each of west Michigan and eastern Michigan (8 total), leading into a tour championship based on points earned in each geographic division. By Tom Lang Nearly anyone who has played or walked the storied grounds of Oakland Hills Country Club South Course agrees the 1918 Donald Ross design is a classic, championship-level layout for the ages.

Now, more than 100 years after opening for play, what’s below the surface of the grass needs to be updated to launch the club into its next 100 years.

The membership voted for emerging design superstar Gil Hanse to come in and totally reconstruct all 18 green complexes and make some additional modifications.

The course will be closed all of 2020 with a reopening planned for spring 2021.

Michigan’s Proposal 1 which, among other things, legalizes ƚŚĞ ĂĚƵůƚ ƌĞĐƌĞĂƟŽŶĂů ƵƐĞ of marijuana, went into ĞīĞĐƚ ŽŶ ĞĐĞŵďĞƌ ϲ͕ ϮϬϭϴ͘ tŚŝůĞ ƌĞĐƌĞĂƟŽŶĂů ĐĂŶŶĂďŝƐ is legal in Michigan, that doesn’t mean adults of age can consume marijuana everywhere – in fact golf ĐŽƵƌƐĞƐ ĂƌĞ Žī ůŝŵŝƚƐ ĨŽƌ ƚŚŝƐ type of ‘weed.’

Public cannabis ĐŽŶƐƵŵƉƟŽŶ ŝƐ ƐƚƌŝĐƚůLJ ŝůůĞŐĂů in Michigan, as is driving ƵŶĚĞƌ ƚŚĞ ŝŶŇƵĞŶĐĞ ŽĨ marijuana. You might think that since you can enjoy a cigar or a Marlboro while playing your golf round that ŶŽ ŽŶĞ ǁŝůů ŶŽƟĐĞ ŝĨ LJŽƵ ĂƌĞ ƐŵŽŬŝŶŐ ͞ƐŽŵĞƚŚŝŶŐ ĞůƐĞ͘͟ Please don’t get caught up in ƚŚĂƚ ĂƐƐƵŵƉƟŽŶ͘ It’s important to note that consumers won’t be able to purchase legal cannabis commercially right away.

And just because you can ĐŽŶƐƵŵĞ ŝƚ͕ LJŽƵ ƐƟůů ĐĂŶ͛ƚ buy it. There is currently no legal place to purchase ƌĞĐƌĞĂƟŽŶĂů ĐĂŶŶĂďŝƐ ŝŶ ŽƵƌ state. Michigan’s state and local governments must ĞƐƚĂďůŝƐŚ ƌĞŐƵůĂƟŽŶƐ ďĞĨŽƌĞ products hit the shelves. That will take about two years, as

members make a $2 pledge for each eagle; many give more.

“I do not turn any students away from being on the team whether they know how to play golf or not,” he said.
