Isla Centinela, Avila, west of madrid Spain

Although it has many natural attractions, the Spanish castle built in the 1920s remains the most recognisable feature of Isla Centinela in Avila – an ancient province west of Madrid. With an area of 24,710 acres, the island nestles in the Iruelas Valley Nature Reserve in Burgillo. The castle itself is surrounded by water for six months in a year and can only be accessed by boat.

This private island can be reached in an hour by plane from Madrid Airport, while a private jetty allows passengers to land on the shore. The castle has several facilities, including numerous terraces and a huge banqueting hall. Its battlements serve as lookout points for viewing wildlife, such as the black vulture, as well as the thick surrounding forests.

The asking price includes 10,000sqm of land that forms the rest of the island.

FINDER Trinity Island, north of athens, Greece

A mere 100km north of Athens and a short distance from the ancient city of Eretria on Euboea (Evia), Trinity Island is a 12-acre, accessible and convenient getaway. Previously owned by the family that served the kings of Greece as Keeper of the Royal Privy Purse since 1958, this Mediterranean island offers privacy and space in a convenient location.

Mostly flat, Trinity Island has a lush vegetation consisting of fruit and ornamental trees, including about 350 olive trees, mature pine and cypress trees, fruit–bearing pistachio, pomegranate, apricot, peach, almond, fig trees, and a thicket of ornamental shrubs, including oleander and hibiscus.

This 61,77-acre island on the Atlantic Ocean is packed with facilities from a landing strip to a 50-metre quay, six tee-off areas, parks, hunting lodge, stables and a wine cellar. There is also a 230sqm villa for accommodation that the owner can furnish to his liking. It is made of timber from the island and incorporates traditional Scandinavian construction methods.

The property has a historical 11th century Viking stronghold comprising 30m-high rocks rising from the lake.
