WRAPPING UP THE SEASON

W

hat a busy and exciting winter it has been! I began middle of January, attending the second day of the Annual Ride With The Cup Tour. From there, I assisted with the Next Gen Riders First Time Ride, a fantastic opportunity for people experiencing snowmobiling for the very first time. I wrapped up January by helping raise funds in the fight against Multiple Sclerosis and participating in the MS Snow Tour in Lac du Flambeau. The travels continued to Springstead for the annual Skinner Ride and then to Manitowish Waters for the KAOS Leadership Ride. A sincere thank-you goes out to the landowners who graciously provide trail access and to the many club members who dedicate countless volunteer hours each year to maintain the trail system. I hope many of you were able to get out and enjoy the trails they work so hard to provide.

It’s hard to believe these past seven magazine issues are already complete. It seems like only yesterday I was preparing the September edition, and now another year is coming to a close.

I’ve truly appreciated the opportunity to share updates, tell your stories, and help keep everyone connected. Each issue has aimed to recognize your efforts, celebrate accomplishments, and keep members informed about activities both on and off the trail. ANOTHER WINTER IN THE BOOKS

W

OW, seems like just yesterday the season was beginning, and now we are at the end of the season. This season was one for the books, especially since the season opened with the southern portion of the state having good riding conditions. For a short period of time, it even looked like the entire state would have snow. But the northern counties had an ice storm hit and then loads of snow on top of the ice, leaving many trails impassable. The incredible volunteers from all over the state worked tirelessly to get the northern portion of the trail system opened by volunteering many hours to clean up the storm damage.

As I reflect on the entire season, I am very grateful that snowmobilers are some of the nicest people on earth. There were a lot of firsts for me this season. The Next Gen riders hosted a firsttime ride. We had 10 young adults signed up to go snowmobiling; however, Mother Nature thought to ride and that it would be fun to be -40 degrees that day. In the end, we had six young adults join us to ride. We outfitted each with a Polaris rental sled and some gear. Heated helmets, jackets, bibs, balaclava and beanies. We went 60 miles that day and heard nothing but positive comments.

These included: “Can you make this a two-day event. I don’t want to go home.” And “ I guess I will need to go buy a couple of sleds.”

Since the day of the ride, the Next Gen riders have given out advice on sleds to buy, equipment needed, and what type of gear is needed to ride. As well as how to join a club.

Another first for me was grooming. I’ve been in a groomer, just not out on the trails making them flat. I was able to join Nick Grams from the Mercer Area Sno Goers in a John Deere tractor groom a section of the trail. To say that I learned a lot is an understatement. Nick was very knowledgeable about how the tractor and drag operated. I spent about four hours learning about grooming. The following week, I had the pleasure of grooming in a Tucker. I joined Larry Erickson from White Thunder Riders to see the difference between each of these types of groomers. Totally different types of grooming. In the tractor, for instance, you could clearly see the drag. In the tucker, you used your mirrors to see the drag. The Tucker also had a blade that was used for the cleanup of intersections and road crossings. It was also used to roll the railroad grade smooth. I cannot thank both the Mercer Area Sno Goers and the White Thunder riders enough for allowing me to really learn the art of grooming. Thank you, Nick and Larry.

I also participated in the Iron Dog Brigade ride in Watersmeet, Michigan. The Iron Dogs are like the national honor society of snowmobiling people. Many older folks who have a passion for the

fun of snowmobiling and help support the snowmobiling community. These individuals have a minimum of 15 years of organized snowmobiling at different levels, from club, county, state, and national levels.

Wisconsin has a number of Iron Dogs that participate in this organization.

During this ride, we also participated in Michigan Senator Bergman’s enlightenment ride.

The congressman had a number of DC influencers snowmobiling with him to become aware of just how much snowmobiling affects the state of Michigan. Keeping other offices updated on issues so they can be informed and vote accordingly. We spent an hour or so with the congressman, asking and answering questions. Congressman Berglman advised that the most important issue is to be informed and make sure you vote.

Snowmobiling isn’t just about riding; there is way more to it. And as your president, I want to be as knowledgeable and informed as I can be.

UNDERSTANDING RAILROAD CROSSINGS T

here seems to be some misunderstanding about the railroad issues, so I hope to clear some of that up here.

There are three main areas where we have contact with railroad property. They are public crossings, private crossings, and old rail spurs.

Public crossings are where we cross with named, numbered, or lettered roadways. These can be paved with crossing arms or dirt with just crossbucks. Be sure the governing traffic authority knows that you cross there. Enter the roadway fifteen feet before the crossing and cross in a perpendicular direction.

Private crossings can be farm and driveway crossings, commercial or industrial yards, or our very own trail crossings. Make sure these are insured and listed with the railroad. Again, cross in a perpendicular direction.

Old rail spurs. Several small communities had their own feed mills or factories that were serviced by the railroad. Most of these rail spurs or sidings have been abandoned, and the land is used by the public or the co-op without knowledge that the railroad still owns the land. Regardless of ownership, if the trail or parking area is near or adjacent to the tracks, install proper signs so people do not park too close to the tracks.

In 2022, WIDOT and the OCR commissioned the railroads to look at all crossings that have had incidents. As you can imagine, it’s extremely expensive to upgrade or even maintain a crossing. The most economical choice is to remove it. Hence, the issue we have is that a lot of our crossings are not on main highways; they are on the back roads with little traffic.

So what can we do? The number one thing you can do is make sure the governing authority of the public crossings knows that you use that crossing. The next thing would be to make sure all your private crossings are insured and permitted. (The AWSC office can give you examples of the permit.) The third thing is to know what the permitted speed of the rail is.

So why does the permitted speed matter? We have rights and laws to protect us on rail crossings under 69 mph. Anything over that, we are at the mercy of whoever has the crossing (town, village, city, county).

How can you find out what the rail speed is? AI/Google does a decent job of telling you what the rail speed is. However, it’s not 100 percent accurate. The most accurate way is to look at the rail itself. There you will find a speed limit sign that looks similar to this. The top number is for passenger trains, and the bottom number is for freight trains.

The law is based on permitted speed, not the actual speed.

This is a statewide issue of which we have no idea how big it may or may not get.

SPRING CONVENTION & MEMBERSHIP REMINDERS

H

ere it is March, and that means spring is right around the corner! Seems like only yesterday we started taking memberships and trail pass orders for the 2025-2026 season.

I hope that you were able to enjoy the snow that we received this season.

The Spring Convention and Annual Meeting are being planned. The AWSC Annual Convention will be held in Green Bay, WI (Oneida Hotel & Conference Center), March 27-29, 2026. All clubs should have received convention information in a mailing sent to the club membership chair via USPS, in the middle of January. The information was also emailed to all club officers for whom we have email addresses. Of course, both these statements are only true if we have updated officer information for your club. We will be recognizing the Snowmobile Friendly Communities for 2026 and the 2026 Scholarship Winners, along with the retiring director and reps.

• Remember, if you have members who are actually commercial sponsors, they should be listed as a commercial sponsor, not a family membership. Business names are no longer being accepted under family membership.

• We have listed on the website a current list of all commercial sponsors that is printable.

• Consider the online membership application where the members can receive an email immediately when their AWSC membership has been renewed, along with the ability to print an AWSC membership card. This needs to be selected on a byclub basis; have your club membership chair inquire with the office to have this change made.

• Now is also the time to discuss within your club the change in the membership dates and the fact that you will need to renew your membership with your club so your AWSC dues are paid prior to purchasing your 2025-2026 trail pass. Those passes go on sale on 7/1/2026.

• If your club elects officers in the spring, please have your officer list updated.

Convention registration forms and online registration are available on the website at awsc.org.

• The Of the Year Award applications will be updated and posted on the website by the end of March 2026.

DEADLINES for convention: Online and mail-in registration will close on March 20. Price increase for registration/banquet from $50 to $60 each on March 3, 2026. After March 20, registration will be taken at the convention. There will be a few banquet tickets available at that time, also.

Have a wonderful end to the season and a safe and wonderful summer!!

The hotel room block closes March 5, 2026, and includes breakfast tickets for the number of guests per room. Voting Delegate forms are due at the office by Friday, March 13, 2026. Election of the Executive Board will take place during the Annual Meeting on Saturday, March 28. Candidate profiles were highlighted in the February issue of WSN. The Silent Auction will be hosted by KAOS, with all the proceeds going to their members. Please consider bringing a basket from your club, association, or personally for the auction, to help our youth, our leaders of tomorrow.

As we near the end of the membership year, there are a few items I would like to point out.

• Memberships, both personal and commercial sponsor memberships, will expire on 6/30/26.

Princesses- Sarah Nordine and Alex Gensch. If any of these girls run for Miss Snowflake, I assure you we will be well represented. That Saturday, I attended Cross Country Cruisers SnoFest, where there was an amazing group of vintage sleds for a fun event.

A BUSY WINTER ON WISCONSIN TRAILS

J

ust like that, it’s beginning to feel like spring again. Happy March, everyone, hopefully you were able to get some miles on your sled this year! I have a special thank you to Airtec Sports in Rice Lake for donating the saddle bag on the Miss Snowflake sled, they have amazing customer service and kept me updated on when the bag was coming in. Us Miss Snowflakes are extremely lucky to have so many amazing businesses that support the program by donating gear, accessories, and of course the snowmobile and trailer!

A recap of January into February- I started with the AWSC Directors meeting in Lac Du Flambeau, where I talked with directors, shared courtesy light information, and went on a KAOS Ride. We had six KAOS members, and it was great to see them all again. I made a stop at Rob’s Performance Motorsports to thank them for donating oil for my sled, and I also got a super cool sweatshirt from them!

I love supporting local businesses, and they are wonderful to work with and so generous. I attended a snowmobile safety class hosted by Philips Chaparral Snowmobile Club. They were such great people to talk to, and I was excited to share my love for snowmobiling with the kids who are about to hit the trails!

I stopped in at the Rosholt Blizzard Busters Annual Fisheree.

I haven’t done much ice fishing; however, I love any outdoor recreation, and this was a well put-together, fun way to fundraise.

I headed back to Jefferson to join the Jefferson Area Youth Snowmobilers for our Annual Spaghetti Dinner. We had a good turnout, and we thank Wingin’ It for helping us put this on every year. The next morning, I attended Silver Creek Rides’ breakfast, it was delicious, and again had a great turnout! This club is split between Jefferson and Dodge County, so I reconnected with Dodge County Snow Queen Alli Fleig, a Miss Snowflake Contestant last year and such a sweet person; she is a great representative of the sport and Dodge County.

The Cambria Moonlighters Snowmobile Club got to spend a whole lot of time with me- I attended their January meeting along with their club trip, where we got to see some of the beautiful UP. They are such a great company! I attended Ride with the Cup, a two-day event promoting safe snowmobiling in Wisconsin. I was even able to make two laps on the Eagle River Derby Track. At the National Championships, I met all the local royalty- Miss Sno Eagle- Brianna Sullivan, Derby Queen- Katie Swendsom, and the two Derby 10 WSN - www.awsc.org

I spent some time with my home club, Twin River Riders, on the club trip to Hayward. I’m biased, but this club is the best, a family-oriented group where we are friends outside of the club.

Snowmobiling truly brings the best people together, and I’m so thankful for this group and the incredible support they give me.

To end January, I attended my first Multiple Sclerosis Snowmobile Tour. I’m excited I raised over $900 for this event to help fight MS. Before the weekend, I didn’t know anyone with MS. We heard many people’s stories of battling the disease. I was in amazing company with Marty Iverson as our tour guide and former Miss Snowflakes Rachyl and Lynsey Burzinski, and Brianna and Jamey Crotteau. AWSC Vice President Randy Murdock received an award for being a part of this cause for 40 years, congratulations Randy! February 1, I attended the Twin River Riders Breakfast.

This breakfast has the best menu, including delicious bacon and deep fried french toast. I also went to King Blunder Enterprises’ Radar Run; it was set up well with lots of classes and racing to watch. There was a wonderful turnout for the first time held. The second weekend in February started with receiving a Citation of Commendation from Senator Melissa Ratcliff. The opportunity to meet her and her team was truly amazing; they were so welcoming and made my day special. After that, I headed up to Manitowish Waters for the KAOS leadership ride. It was an amazing weekend and it was so nice to get together with all of my friends in person instead of over a phone screen!

While we put our sleds away for the year, I hope you have a great summer. I can’t wait to see you at one of the events I will be at. I can’t list them all, but check out my calendar on Facebook to stay updated on where you can see me. Thank you for your support so far. I’m so grateful and blessed to be representing this sport!

o you know what KAOS was up to last month? We had our Annual Leadership Ride at Camp Jorn in Manitowish Waters. The leadership ride is exclusively for KAOS members, where the youth get together to ride and participate in team-building exercises. The weekend is a time for members to learn what KAOS is and how it operates.

Members started arriving at 3:00 PM on Friday. Those members made preparations for dinner, along with people watching with AWSC President Lori, waiting for everyone to arrive. Fun fact: the driveway was a little too narrow for a 30-foot trailer, so Youth Advisor Parker Grams had to back all the way out of extremely tight corners. Once everyone arrived at Camp Jorn, we rode snowmobiles to the Mercer Area Sno-Goers groomer barn for a bonfire with s’mores and hot chocolate.

Saturday, we started the day at SLO’s pub, where they and Cross Country Cruisers hosted breakfast for us. After breakfast, we headed back to the camp to get ready to hit the trails. We split into two separate groups, putting on roughly 150 miles. For lunch, we stopped at Pine Lake Lodge, where White Thunder Riders from Hurley, Wisconsin sponsored our lunch. We also made a stop at Donners Bay Resort for a quick hot chocolate and great hospitality.

Another stop was the lookout off of Trail 6, which had beautiful views! Saturday night, we had “make your own pizza,” followed by a meeting where the next few events and opportunities were discussed. We also voted on our new board members.

AWSC NEWS FIRST TIME RIDE EVENT Hosted by Next Gen Riders & AWSC

T

he First Time Ride event proved to be a huge success, even with below-zero temperatures. New riders braved the cold and came away excited about the sport of snowmobiling.

Before heading out, participants received a safety overview and had time to practice riding to become comfortable on the machines. Riders then hit the trails and completed an impressive 60-mile ride around Iron County, a remarkable accomplishment for people who had never ridden before.

Participants quickly caught the snowmobiling bug, with some saying, “I’m going to have to buy my own snowmobile, this is awesome!”

“I had an absolute blast riding for the first time.”

“It was such a great experience, and I had so much fun. I wish it had been a two-day event.”

“Was a bit hot for me (LOL). I had an amazing time and felt comfortable being a first-time rider.”

They also asked how they could join a local club.

SNOWMOBILE RECREATION COUNCIL MEETING By: Dave Newman

T

he Snowmobile Recreation Council (SRC) met on February 5, in Arbor Vitae. Committees met and were followed by a full council meeting. Jillian Steffes, DNR Grant Manager, presented the current financial data for the program. The current figures showed registration and trail pass numbers were up when compared to last year. It was announced that a new dealer portal was being tested and is expected to go live next fall.

Jake Holsclaw, DNR Law Enforcement, reported on current law enforcement efforts and announced there were 10 snowmobile fatalities for the season at that time.

The DNR conducted Safe Sled weekends two previous weeks. Drew Nussbaum, Dept. of Tourism, reported on the Travel Wisconsin Snow Report and talked about the updated version that launched in late February.

William Knaack, bridge engineer with KBIS, gave a presentation to the council on how bridges are engineered and inspected.

One thing he promoted was bridge maintenance. Something every club can do to help prolong the life of the bridge and decking is to clean the deck off and clear any overhanging brush before and after each season.

T

he legendary, self-named “3 Old Guys” will embarked on another grand snowmobiling adventure this winter, aided by a fleet of easy-steering, sharp-handling Arctic Cat snowmobiles.

Illustrious adventure riders Paul Dick, Rob Hallstrom, and Rex Hibbert will utilize electric power-steering (EPS) equipped 2026 Arctic Cat ZR 600 EPS snowmobiles to cross the rugged Alaskan outback this month as they serve as ambassadors for the Iron Dog – the world’s longest and toughest snowmobile race. The 3 Old Guys will be joined by fellow Arctic Cat riders Brad Hellwig (an Alaska dealership owner and former Iron Dog competitor), his son, Tyler Helwig, plus Arctic Insider and Thomas Sno Sports owner Tom Rowland, on the grueling, 1,500mile trek from Big Lake to Nome, Alaska. Their adventure began Thursday, February 12.

The 2026 ZR 600 EPS is one of two snowmobiles offered by Arctic Cat that are the first production two-stroke snowmobiles equipped with power steering. The speed- and torque-sensing EPS system eases steering effort, dampens feedback through the system, and allows for less required handlebar turning – all key benefits to any rider.

For three riders in their late 60s through mid70s crossing unforgiving terrain on ungroomed paths, though, the exclusive Arctic Cat EPS system offers particularly strong benefits – making every riding day more enjoyable and far less tiring.

“The power steering is going to be a real game-changer for us,” Rob Hallstrom said during a January test run on the 2026 Arctic Cat ZR 600 EPS models. “We’ll run some 300- or even 400-mile days, and those can get really hard on you. We know EPS will make it easier.

Plus, because of the EPS, we can run some aggressive carbides without the normal trade-off you’d have from fighting the heavy steering those runners would normally cause.”

“When we get into tight bush up there, there will be rocks, frozen clumps, and a lot more that we’ll be encountering,” Paul Dick added. “That can be really strenuous on any rider. The EPS will undoubtedly make it a lot easier to handle.”

As ambassadors, the group will pre-run the Iron Dog course before the competitive classes. Along their route, the 3 Old Guys, plus coambassadors Rowland and the Hellwigs, will pull their Arctic Cat ZR 600 EPS into town and villages, share information about the Iron Dog, and give snowmobile safety gear to school children. The 3 Old Guys’ formal duties wrap up at the Halfway Banquet in Nome, Alaska, though the trio has plans to extend their ride much farther, potentially.

The 3 Old Guys first gained acclaim in 2019 with a 2,950-mile adventure from Paul Dick’s home in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, to Churchill, Manitoba, riding Arctic Cat Norseman 600 snowmobiles.

In 2023, their legend grew with a demanding 5,600-mile adventure from Grand Rapids to Fairbanks, Alaska, aboard Arctic Cat Norseman 800 snowmobiles. Hundreds of thousands of viewers followed their adventure through nightly social media updates.

Last year, the trio completed a 3,700-mile journey from Grand Rapids to the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland and Labrador, using a Riot 600 snowmobile built on Arctic Cat’s new Catalyst chassis.

“Those Catalysts were flawless, easy to drive, and so comfortable,” Rex Hibbert said. “They were the perfect sled for the trip. Now we’ll benefit from both the Catalyst and power steering.”

O

n a cold January day in 2026, Merrill, Wisconsin, rider Brad Schnabl reached an impressive milestone: 20,000 miles on his 2020 Ski-Doo MXZ-X Renegade 600R. While on a quick 227-mile round-trip ride from Watersmeet to Toivola in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Brad glanced down at his odometer and watched it roll to 20,000.0 miles.

Brad is an active member of the L&L Tree Dodgers Snowmobile Club and has been snowmobiling for the past 35 years. His first sled was a 1974 Ski-Doo TNT 440, and since then, he has accumulated an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 lifetime miles on the trails. His longest one-day ride was an incredible 416 miles, and his longest trip totaled approximately 1,300 miles.

When he’s not riding, Brad enjoys working on cars, hunting, fishing, and shooting pool.

His dedication to the sport is evident not only in the miles he rides but also in how well he maintains his equipment.

On his 2020 Ski-Doo, the motor was replaced at 15,000 miles, along with a new track at the same mileage. At 17,000 miles, the clutch was rebuilt, and the skis and brakes were replaced.

The drive belt is replaced every 4,500 miles, and annual maintenance includes servicing shocks, bearings, slides, and other wear items to keep the sled in top condition.

Brad’s commitment to riding and maintaining his sled shows the passion many snowmobilers share for the sport. Reaching 20,000 miles on a single machine is no small accomplishment and is a testament to both careful upkeep and a love for long days on the trail.

Congratulations to Brad on this impressive milestone and his continued dedication to snowmobiling.

he Annual Ride with the Cup was held January 15-16. Due to limited snow conditions, participants traveled by trucks and trailers on the first day, with enough snow arriving to allow riding by snowmobile on day two. The large group of snowmobilers, including the AWSC President and Miss Snowflake, drew plenty of attention as they traveled through four counties, making 18 stops along the route from Wausau to Eagle River.

20TH ANNIVERSARY MILITARY SNOWMOBILE RIDE

I

t was a cold start to the World Championship races at the Derby Complex, but that didn’t stop members of our military family from enjoying an afternoon of racing action compliments of the Derby Complex.

Monday morning started out a bit frosty also as the group of riders gathered in anticipation of an exciting day of snowmobiling in the northwoods. They all came dressed for the cold weather and ready to hit the trails. Hot chocolate, coffee and doughnuts were enjoyed by all. After a brief introduction of the guides and trail etiquette the groups departed one by one. The trails were groomed to perfection by the area clubs. After a brief pitstop to warm up in Phelps we were back on the trail to Hillside Resort on beautiful Lac Vieux Lake. A delicious lunch of pulled pork, sloppy joes and chili with all the fixings was the perfect meal to warm the tummies.

All the groups returned safely to the Derby Complex for the 20th Anniversary banquet celebration. Tails of the trail were shared and a brief presentation of a few needed awards.

Key models include: • ZR and ZR EPS: ATAC 3 system gives push-button control of three Fox iQS shocks, with a 129-inch Ripsaw and uncoupled suspension or a 137-inch Ripsaw II with a coupled Slide-Action rear.

A NEW 600 ENGINE One of the biggest changes for 2027 is the addition of the Rotax 600RR E-TEC engine, replacing the outgoing 600R across the lineup.

ARCTIC CAT UNVEILED THE KITTY CAT IN 1971 Submitted By: AWSC Vintage and History Committee

T

he pilot build of approximately 50 Arctic Cat Kitty Cats used a Clinton two-cycle engine under a non-functional chrome hood grille with trim decals that were patterned after the 1971 EXT race sleds.

The production models released for the 1972 season had many changes. Most obvious was a Kawasaki engine, just like big brother Cat sleds, with the choke relocated from the now smaller dash panel to under the hood, where little hands wouldn’t find it so easily. The hood lost the chrome grille in favor of a molded-in black one, but gained side louvers. The belly pan switched from metalflake silver to plain gray.

The chassis was heavily reworked with a different bulkhead, improved hood hinge, redesigned steering and skis, and deletion of the tubular rear bumper in favor of an integrated plastic lift handle and reflector unit. An engine kill switch was added, just like on the big sleds, and new triangular hood decals were used.

Initial production was at Arctic’s recently acquired General Leisure lawnmower plant in Omaha, Nebraska, with the retail price set at $269.95 plus freight.

One of the biggest changes occurred in 1977 when the Suzuki AA06A1 60cc engine replaced the Kawasaki powerplant.

rom December 16 - 19, 2025, a snowmobile safety course was held at Clear Lake High School to educate youth on safe snowmobiling practices, trail etiquette, and rider responsibility.

The Clear Lake Ditch Dusters Snowmobile Club covered the full cost of the class for all 20 students who attended, totaling $200.

embers of the Antigo Sno-Drifters Snowmobile Club recently gathered at their February meeting at Held’s to celebrate a very special occasion, Don Wilds’ 87th birthday. Known as “Donny,” he has already logged more than 240 hours alone grooming trails this season, demonstrating his remarkable dedication to the sport and the local trail system.

Club members expressed their appreciation for the countless hours, experience, and knowledge Donny continues to contribute.

His commitment helps ensure riders can enjoy safe and wellmaintained trails throughout the winter.

The evening served as both a birthday celebration and a heartfelt thank-you to a valued member whose passion and service continue to make a lasting impact on the club and the snowmobiling community.

RETURN OF THE RED LIGHT RALLY - 2025 Submitted By: Rita Franzoi

M

any of you remember Hurley for the infamous Red Light Rally, always held the 2nd weekend in December, as the “Welcome to Winter.” Some time around 2011, the event fizzled out due to low or no snow.

A group of community members and business owners got together in November and decided that Hurley needed to bring back the Red Light Rally snow or not. Together with the White Thunder Riders, a parade, poker run, scavenger hunt, and local business decorating contest were organized within five weeks.

Little did organizers know, but Mother Nature liked the idea and brought the area over 24” of snow on Thanksgiving weekend, giving the area just what they needed to get trails cleared and opened.

Keeping traditions alive for the return, the group held a parade on Thursday night to truly welcome winter! Approximately 10 local businesses and organizations decked out floats with lights, several side by sides joined along with the fleet of White Thunder Riders groomers and tractors to bring the rally experience to Hurley’s Famous Silver Street.

Organizers are already planning Red Light Rally 2026, so mark your calendars and plan to head north. December 10-13, 2026

usky Bay Resort hosted the second annual sled blessing and fundraising event for the Northern Adventures Snowmobile Club on Saturday, January 10. The day kicked off with a gathering of numerous snowmobiles at the resort for the blessing.

Attendees enjoyed a 50/50 raffle, delicious food provided by Busky Bay, and live music with dancing. We collected donations for the Rural Care and Share Food Shelf, which supports our local friends facing food insecurities. A check/donation was presented to Jody Halet, Rural Care & Share food shelf board member. Mother Nature treated us to a beautiful snowfall, perfect for enhancing the trails for fantastic riding. We wrapped up the evening with our holiday party at Deep Lake Lodge Steakhouse. It was a wonderful day full of winter fun in the Northland!

n January 31, well over 200 riders entering Price County were greeted by members of the Fifield Sno Drovers. As each sled approached a number of orange caution cones to slow them down, the rider was welcomed by a club member and given a coupon for two dollars off any food and/or soda at five area taverns. Riders were offered a chance to warm up by a charcoal fire, sit in the tractor, view the drag, and play a few games. Laughter, fun, and good conversations took place at the event. All riders were very surprised with their gift of a coupon, and were thankful for the unique trail experience. The Fifield Sno Drovers were also thankful for the experience and enjoyed giving out the coupons that they had purchased.

CLUB FLASHBACK share the same passion. We take pride in and dedication to wellmaintained snowmobile trail segments in Waukesha County.

Annually, the club does snowmobile trips in Wisconsin and Michigan. We have traveled to Yellowstone several times, also to Hearst, Ontario, by the Snow Train (which unfortunately no longer offers this trip), Ely, Minnesota, and Grand Marais, Minnesota. Each trip averages 20 – 25 members. One favorite thing about our club trips is that we all try to gather for dinner after riding 50 to 200 miles a day, depending on which group you ride with. We have all ages ranging from 10 to going on 80.

55 YEARS OF THE SUSSEX SLED BUGS By: Karen Jeras, Sussex Sled Bugs Snowmobile Club Secretary

I

n trying to write this article for the Sussex Sled Bugs, I realize that with the passing of 55 years, a lot of really great stories have been lost over the course of time. Unfortunately, the Club’s “charter members” have passed. I did have the pleasure of knowing Doug Hext, Ried Bierman, Frank Westerdale, Tom Schepp, and Vince Wierl.

Trying to describe my definition for a lifelong passion for the entire sport of snowmobiling fills my mind with memories, fun, dedication/commitment, and some frustrations that come along with it, as it does with most everything.

The Sussex Sled Bugs Snowmobile Club, Inc., was officially established in December 1970. The Sled Bugs are one of seventeen clubs in Waukesha County and maintain about 25 miles of trails.

Membership has stayed relatively the same over the last several years.

The club was formed to establish better relationships with landowners by correcting violations, to prevent property damage, and to make snowmobiling safer and more enjoyable for snowmobile owners and non-owners alike. Also, to have a voice in snowmobile legislation as a group in the community, county, and state. In the future, to have a cooperative relationship between the community and the club.

I have realized that those from the past who had the foresight all those years ago to initiate our club had no way of knowing how their efforts would touch so many others. Once you become an active member of a snowmobile club, you become a part of the legacy in that organization. Even though the snowfalls may not be as prevalent as they once were or the weather conditions as conducive to retaining that snow, there are still many dedicated snowmobiling enthusiasts who 28 WSN - www.awsc.org

The Sled Bugs takes up a collection from members at the December General Meeting. The collection is then matched by the club, and several of our members shop for food sales, and then all that food is donated to the Sussex Outreach Services (local food pantry).

This year, the members graciously donated nearly $500, of which the club will match.

The Sleds Bugs hold one or two brat frys, combined with a bake sale at the Sussex Piggly Wiggly each spring. Last April, we held our first meat raffle at Belfast Station in Sussex. This engagement not only had great participation from the community but also brought camaraderie among the club members.

There are so many people to “THANK” that have kept the Sled Bugs on the map for 55 years of organized snowmobiling. Starting with our gracious landowners, past, present, and future; the founding members, the current and present members, board of directors, officers, trail masters, and trail coordinators.
