Ride Right, Ride Safe, and Think Snow!

PRESIDENT’S COMMUNIQUE

STRONGER THAN THE STORM

In the wake of the recent storm, our snowmobile community has once again shown its strength, resilience, and dedication to the sport of snowmobiling. Across the north woods, local volunteers as well as volunteers from a long way away came together to begin the enormous task of opening the snowmobile trail system. These men and women spent countless hours cutting downed trees, removing debris, repairing signage, and ensuring that the trail system would open for the 25-26 season and that the trail system would be safe for all to ride. These volunteers deserve our highest appreciation.

Snowstorms of this magnitude leave a lasting impact on the network of trails that crisscross our forests and our communities. The storm’s heavy, wet snow and powerful winds created damage similar to the storm a few years ago, when many counties throughout the state had damage. This storm damage included miles of blocked routes, shattered branches, and compromised the safety of the trails. Club members and the responding volunteers reported entire sections of corridor trails buried under fallen trees and snow depths that made for hard work. In many cases, cleanup entailed heavy equipment, fuel, and manpower that are not always readily available to local clubs.

This is why the work of our volunteers is so remarkable. They donate not only their time, but also their tools, machines, and personal expenses. Yet even with all our volunteers the storm’s destruction presents a financial burden that cannot reasonably fall solely onto our clubs. Snowmobile organizations operate on tight budgets, relying on membership dues, fundraising, and grant funding. Those funds are typically earmarked for annual grooming costs, regular maintenance, insurance, and safety programs. Largescale storm cleanup threatens to overwhelm the club’s budgets and pulls resources away from activities that keep our trail system safe and reliable throughout the season.

These are the reasons that we have introduced our funding bill. This legislation is designed to assist clubs with expenses related to our trail program. The program was never meant to cover all funding expenses; however, it was meant to help clubs stay financially stable so that they could provide the safest and best trails they could. The bill acknowledges a simple reality. When our trail system is open, the entire outdoor recreation economy feels the impact. Snowmobiling contributes millions of dollars to local businesses each winter—hotels, restaurants, fuel stations, repair shops, and more. Ensuring trails remain open and accessible is not just a matter of recreation; it is critical to supporting jobs and economic activity in our rural communities.

This bill also recognizes that volunteers cannot continue to shoulder the unexpected costs of storms on their own. Currently, we are short of funding to even cover the costs of all the bridge or infrastructure projects and mandatory relocations that come in each year. By increasing fees, we can ensure that clubs remain financially stable while still protecting the safety of the snowmobilers. This is not a replacement for volunteer efforts, because nothing could ever replace the dedication of our club members, but it is an investment in the future of our trail system and the people who sustain it.

To every volunteer who picked up a chainsaw, cleared a trail, or supported the effort in any way, thank you. Your hard work embodies the spirit of our snowmobile community. Our funding bill exists to honor that commitment and to ensure you have the support you need to keep our trails open for generations to come.

To all the businesses that fed, offered discounted rates for volunteers, or provided much-needed equipment, thank you. We could not have taken on this task without your support.

And finally, thank you, landowners, for always supporting our trails and letting us accomplish the work that is needed. We appreciate all of you.

This year, I will see you on the trails!

WITH SNOWMOBILE INSURANCE

As winter sports enthusiasts, we eagerly await the snowy season for the adrenaline rush of snowmobiling. The feeling of the cold air rushing past, the sight of the unspoiled white landscapes—it’s a winter wonderland waiting to be discovered. Amidst the excitement and adventure, it’s essential to ensure that you’re properly protected with snowmobile insurance. Here are a few reasons why snowmobile insurance is a wise decision.

Peace of mind

The most signi cant bene t of snowmobile insurance is the peace of mind it brings. Knowing that you’re covered in case of unexpected events allows you to fully immerse yourself in the winter experience. Focus on the breathtaking landscapes and the adrenaline rush of riding, without the nagging worry of potential nancial setbacks.

Protect your snowmobile

Your snowmobile is a valuable investment that deserves protection. With comprehensive and collision coverage, you can rest easy knowing that repair or replacement costs will be covered in the event of certain damage, theft, or accidents. Keep your ride in top condition without breaking the bank.

Be prepared for the unexpected

Accidents can happen, even to the most experienced riders. Snowmobile insurance offers liability coverage, protecting you from the nancial implications of thirdparty injuries or property damage, up to speci ed limits. You can relax and have fun in your winter activities, whether riding on trails or exploring the backcountry, when you have the right protection.

Homeowners insurance

Homeowners insurance may provide some coverage for your snowmobile, but it often has limitations and can have a more costly deductible. A dedicated snowmobile insurance policy ensures that you’re adequately covered speci c to your needs.

Family and friends

Policies can provide off-premises and permissive use, allowing you to con dently have friends and family drive your snowmobile occasionally. You also have the option to add minor operators as drivers, so you can rest easy knowing that you have the right protection if something goes wrong.

Personalized protection

Since no two snowmobilers are alike, snowmobile insurance lets you choose your own coverage options. You can customize your policy to include things like accessory and custom parts/equipment coverage to provide protection if you’ve made enhancements or upgrades to your snowmobile. This way, you can be sure that your insurance plan matches your speci c needs.

Con dence for nancing

Obtaining insurance coverage for your snowmobile is often a requirement from lenders if you have nanced its purchase. Not only does snowmobile insurance ful ll this obligation, but it also provides peace of mind by safeguarding your nancial interests.

Have fun in the winter with con dence, knowing that you have the proper coverage for your situation. Invest in snowmobile insurance and ensure that your thrilling escapades remain just that—thrilling, safe, and unforgettable. Let the snow-covered landscapes be your playground, and let insurance be your safety net.

VP NOTES

FUNDING THE FUTURE OF SNOWMOBILING

Are you a snowmobile club that fundraises, or are you a fundraising club that snowmobiles?

While the cost of equipment and other expenses, like bridges, have nearly doubled in the last couple of years, our reimbursement rates have stayed relatively flat. This has forced clubs to rely more heavily on fundraising activities. While fundraising activities can be fun and add some stimulant to your organization, they can also become taxing and a repetitive burden on those involved. If your club hosts more bingo nights than snowmobile events, what are you?

A properly funded system is paramount to a healthy club. Financial issues can rip a club apart. Getting our system financially right is of the utmost importance. Clubs that constantly rely on unreliable sources of income and struggle with old equipment and never have enough money to make ends meet are not fun to belong to. Not only do these clubs struggle with resources, but they struggle with membership as well. Most clubs are aging out, and what

At the present time, we are 100 percent self-funded. We do some cost sharing with the state and ATV/UTV program for certain projects, like some of the bridges that are multi-use. But for almost all of it, we are self-funded. Why? We provide a lot of tourism to the state. Our economic impact is huge (over a billion dollars might be as high as 3 billion). While our proposed user fee increase will help a lot, I think we need to consider other sources of funding. This has been talked about in the past, but it has never gone anywhere. Maybe now is the time to look at it again. If we get back to a historical snow pattern, we will be severely short on funds. The proposed fee increase may not and most likely won’t be enough. Possible alternative revenue sources are things like room tax, stewardship funds, tourism grants and state and federal trail programs. Silent sports get all kinds of grants for projects. Why can’t we?

QUEEN’S CORNER

GRATEFUL AS TIME FLIES

When they say time flies… I get it, it truly does. Some of the great Miss Snowflake sponsors have recently reminded me how incredibly blessed I am to have this opportunity. I got to pick up my sled on December 4, and I want to extend a huge thank you to Donahue Super Sports for the Skidoo, ArcticFX Graphics for the unbelievable wrap, and Unique Signs and Designs- Tom Popp for wrapping my sled and trailer. The sled is absolutely gorgeous, and I can’t express how grateful I am to all of you. These businesses are outstanding, and their customer service is unmatched. I also took a trip to DSG in Madison. Every time I walk into their store, I walk out with more than I planned to buy. If you’re ever looking for the perfect gift for yourself or a woman who loves the outdoors, be sure to shop with DSG- their products are made for women, by women, and combine fit and fashion while being in the outdoors. Between my sled and DSG gear, I will be looking great all winter!

A quick recap of November: I attended Snowmobile Safety in Walworth County, where I was able to talk about AWSC, KAOS, Miss Snowflake, and, of course, my favorite, the RAD Light/ RideLites. I am very passionate about installing additional safety features, and now I am able to use my position to continue to bring awareness and promote safety. I also stopped by King Blunder Enterprises’ Open House and had a great time meeting people from around the county and watching the motorcycle show. Next, I attended the Arlington Prairie Drifters Fall Fling, where I got to meet snowmobilers from neighboring counties and draw an endless number of raffle winners.

My final November event was my first holiday parade with the Jefferson Area Youth Snowmobilers, one of my own clubs! Our float idea was insane, but we made it come to life. We had a grinch launching a snowmobile over a car with all of the Christmas presents! The parade was in a snowstorm with six inches plus on the ground, perfect Miss Snowflake weather! It was such a fun parade, and watching everyone show up in their winter jackets definitely brought the holiday spirit.

With the new year approaching, I’m incredibly thankful to continue representing AWSC throughout our beautiful state. The support I’ve received has been overwhelming, and I’m truly grateful to have been chosen as Miss Snowflake. Looking ahead to January, you can find me at the AWSC Directors Meeting, the Rosholt Fisheree, the Jefferson Area Youth Snowmobilers Dinner, Ride With the Cup, SnoFest, Twin River Riders Club Ride, Cambria Moonlighters Club Ride, and the MS Ride. If you’re attending any of these events, please come and say hi, I can’t wait to meet you. Let’s keep praying for a long and snowy winter!

If you have any events you’d like me to attend, please email me at misssnowflake2526@gmail. com.

WHAT IS KAOS & HOW IS IT FUNDED?

KAOS (Kids and Adults on Snowmobiles) is Wisconsin’s youth snowmobiling organization dedicated to helping young riders understand how the snowmobile program operates from local clubs all the way up to the international level. The program also focuses on building essential leadership skills, particularly in communication and public speaking.

Youth can join KAOS as early as age 14 by completing a KAOS Representative Form, which must be signed by their county director and/or club president. Once that’s done, the fun begins!

KAOS Representatives are youth between the ages of 14 and 18. After serving as a representative for a minimum of two years, members can advance to become KAOS Advisors, whose role is to mentor and train new representatives. Advisors are between 18 and 21 years old.

Each year, KAOS hosts two leadership training weekends, one in the winter and another in the fall, as well as a summer camping trip. During statewide events, KAOS organizes ageappropriate activities for youth members, including breakout sessions focused on leadership, teamwork, and skill development. Most events are youth-only (parents are encouraged to drop off their

kids and pick them up at the end of the weekend), except for the summer camping trip, where the entire family is invited.

KAOS is funded through organized fundraisers and donations from the snowmobiling community. These funds support leadership weekends, youth hospitality rooms, ISC attendance, guest speakers, and other activities. Individual funding assistance varies by county; some counties may help cover expenses such as lodging or registration, though this is not required.

I highly recommend the KAOS program to youth of all skill levels. Not only does it provide valuable life and leadership skills, but it also offers unforgettable experiences and lasting friendships — including lifelong riding buddies!

SAFE RIDERS

PROMOTE SAFE SNOWMOBILING THIS JANUARY

The International Snowmobile Manufacturer’s Association (ISMA) brings together all four snowmobile manufacturers to promote the Safe Riders! program, which encourages safe snowmobiling practices. This initiative is supported by snowmobile associations, clubs, government agencies, and enthusiasts, and typically takes place throughout January.

Resources to promote snowmobile safety can be found at snowmobile.org, including posters, a fact book, a downloadable safety video series, public service announcements, and more.

The goal of International Snowmobile Safety Week (January 1018) is to raise awareness about safe snowmobiling and show how responsible riding practices can help prevent accidents.

To guide your organization’s snowmobile safety campaign, these suggested activities contained in the Safe Riders manual can be modified to meet your club’s needs. Numerous activities can be hosted to promote International Snowmobile Safety Week. Some ideas are listed below, but do not feel limited to these — you may have better ideas of your own!

Don’t overdo it! Select one, maybe two projects that your club

SNOWMOBILE SAFETY COURSE

Your club can sponsor a safety education course, which results in the certification of participants. Contact the Snowmobile Safety Training Coordinator for your state or province — or your club safety trainer can hold an abbreviated class.

SNOWMOBILE SAFETY SEMINAR

Work with a dealer in your area and host an open house at a dealership. Set up displays for viewing, and have a program of events such as guest speakers, videos, and demonstrations.

SNOWMOBILE SAFETY CLINIC

Get a local snowmobile dealer or garage to co-sponsor this event. Invite people to bring their machines for a safety inspection. Have mechanically inclined club members assist with maintenance questions and techniques. Serve nonalcoholic refreshments.

SPONSOR OR HOST TAKE A FRIEND SNOWMOBILING EVENT

This event may be possible during December if adequate snowfall has arrived in your area. This type of event is a great way to introduce and promote snowmobiling to members of the community or government who are not snowmobilers. This is a good time to invite a non-snowmobiling friend or family member to “Go Snowmobiling” and get started safely.

Make arrangements for the use of machines from dealers and club

1. Never consume alcohol or drugs before or during snowmobiling.

2. Become familiar with the snowmobile you ride.

3. Operate at safe and reasonable speeds.

4. Stay on trails and areas where snowmobiling is permitted (no trespassing).

5. Avoid travel on unfamiliar frozen bodies of water.

6. Use extra caution at night.

7. Keep your snowmobile properly maintained.

8. Become familiar with the terrain you will travel on.

9. Listen to the weather forecast before you leave.

10. Always wear a helmet and proper clothing.

11. Never ride alone. Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.

12. Carrying emergency supplies and learning survival skills.

DID YOU KNOW

That the Polaris 650 TXL and Subaru used the same fuel injection components?

The 650 Polaris TXL was the first mass-produced fuelinjected snowmobile. Fuji Industries, of course, makes both snowmobile engines and Subaru automobiles.

Polaris reduced the bore on the 650 over 3 mm to 74.8 mm (compared to the 600) but increased the stroke from 10 mm to 74mm. Thus, the 650 with its longer stroke generates the level of torque you’d usually experience with a bigger displacement engine. It was putting out approximately 105 horsepower.

The series and club both work extremely hard to make sure the entire course is constructed of man-made snow. This ensures that racers will have the best terrain and fans will have one of the best snocross experiences. Save this date and be sure to bring friends and family.

CLUB NEWS

RRTR DONATES A SNOBULANCE

Rush River Trail Riders Snowmobile Club (RRTR), established in 1970, has recently acquired and donated a SnoBulance Rescue Sled to the Ellsworth Service Fire Association located in Ellsworth, WI. This sled serves as a replacement for an older model that was purchased over 40 years ago. It can transport one patient along with one EMT within its heated compartment. The sled will be towed by a Polaris ATV equipped with tracks, which is also owned by the department. During winter, the sled operates on skis, while in summer, it is fitted with wheels. This purchase will greatly benefit the residents of Pierce County, as the association frequently assists other departments when necessary. The sled is stored in an enclosed trailer and is prepared for immediate use. This acquisition was made possible through the dedicated efforts of RRTR members and the tremendous support we received from our community. This purchase will benefit Pierce County and support local recreation for years to come.

CLARK COUNTY SNOWMOBILE COUNCIL CELEBRATES NEW BRIDGE

The new Black River bridge in Greenwood on Highway County G was dedicated on November 18, 2025. This bridge has a 12 foot snowmobile recreational lane that was funded by the snowmobile program. Lunda Construction was the main contractor of the project. They started the project in the spring of 2025. The total cost of the entire project was $ 4.8 million. The Ho-chunk Nation donated $1.375 million to the project.

Sno-Eagles Provide Concessions for USA Pond Hockey Championships

The Sno-Eagles Snowmobile Club of Eagle River took over concessions and beer sales for USA Hockey for their Pond Hockey National Championships two years ago. Typically, these are held at Dollar Lake in Eagle River, with more than 250 teams, around 2,000 players, and 24 rinks.

Dave Hansen, and Clark Co. Board Chairman

Tom Wilcox

It is a great partnership for winter sport enthusiasts. Last year, Sno-Eagles members and friends volunteered almost 500 hours during the three-day event to make it a success, plus many hours of planning and set up. The players and spectators really appreciate having hot food and cold beverages available on the ice, and expressed that many times throughout the weekend. Since the sales serve as a fundraiser for the club, it is a win-win for everyone.

This season, the Championships will take place January 29 –February 1, 2026. You can get to Dollar Lake on the snowmobile trails. So, it’s worth the trip to Eagle River to enjoy hours of hockey and snowmobiling in the beautiful Northwoods!

REMEMBERING THE RIDE

Do you ever let your mind wander to days as a kid when dad would let you drive the family snowmobile alone through the field? You couldn’t wait for this day to come. You felt all grown up and proud that you could operate that 1969 Arctic Cat Panther by yourself. Dad would be carefully watching, praying that you wouldn’t get that big ‘ol Panther stuck.

TRAIL SNOWMOBILES

Today, some of us still get that same feeling when we see the vintage sleds. Memories haven’t faded too much, and we are back to thinking about the days of bragging about how fast that Panther could go to our friends and family.

Spending good times with family and friends snowmobiling created long-term bonds that still exist today, long into adulthood. That first sled and dad’s guidance taught us that taking turns and getting our work done were prerequisites to getting out on the trails and having fun. We learned that working together and volunteering with our local snowmobile club was a must.

The members of the Bushwackers have a strong snowmobiling heritage. The days of dragging a bed spring behind a sled to groom the trail, trailside cookouts, and becoming a good snowmobile mechanic, as you had to fix and repair your sled during just about all of your snowmobile rides back in the day.

The Eisenstein Bushwackers would like you to relive those memories by attending our club’s first vintage show, which will be appropriately named – BACK IN THE DAY. Come spend the day on beautiful Wintergreen Lake located just outside Fifield, Wisconsin, on February 28, 2026. You can also meet Jena Lenz, who is the AWSC’s Miss Snowflake. We hope you visit us and spot that vintage, wonderfully restored Arctic Cat.

Most of the brands from the early days are no longer in existence, but through vintage shows, pictures, and our own memories, we can relive those great memories.

Looking forward to seeing you on February 28, 2026 and reminiscing about the early days of the best sport around!

POLARIS DONATES MORE THAN $135,000 TO OFF-ROAD and SNOW ORGANIZATIONS

Fall 2025 TRAILS GRANTS program

Combined with the Spring 2025 TRAILS GRANTS, Polaris has donated more than $255,000 in 2025 and nearly $4 million since the program’s inception.

Polaris Inc., announced it is donating more than $135,000 to offroad vehicles (ORV), all-terrain vehicles (ATV), and snowmobile riding clubs and organizations across the United States and Canada as part of its TRAILS GRANTS program. For nearly two decades, Polaris’ TRAILS GRANTS program has supported organizations and programs that promote safe and responsible riding, facilitate trail preservation, and help protect the environment and natural resources that are a part of the off-road trail systems.

“Local riding clubs and organizations are the backbone of the offroad community, dedicating countless hours to maintaining trails, promoting safe riding practices, and building community,” said Reid Wilson, President of Off-Road Vehicles, Polaris. “These grassroots organizations bring so much energy to the sport, and our TRAILS GRANTS program is one of our ways to say thank you. We’re proud to help them keep the ride going.”

Awarded twice annually, Polaris TRAILS GRANTS support the efforts of nonprofit organizations and local riding clubs who use the grant for trail development, maintenance projects, safety and responsible riding education initiatives, and other projects. In April, Polaris awarded 13 organizations Spring TRAILS GRANTS, making the combined donation amount for 2025 more than $255,000.

“LPFA is looking forward to getting some much-needed work done on the Yellowjacket OHV Trail. Thanks to funding from Polaris, we will be able to build sustainable creek crossings to improve trail conditions for riders, as well as protect wildlife in these sensitive riparian areas,” said Addison Jerlow, program manager, Los Padres Forest Association. “This funding provides a crucial first step in managing this trail for years to come.”

There are 14 organizations that were named Fall 2025 TRAILS GRANTS recipients and received awards up to $10,000 each. One is from Wisconsin. Congratulations to the Village of Edgar!
