nother Christmas season is already knocking on the door, hard to believe, isn’t it? I’m more than ready for winter and excited to make this one truly memorable.

At the end of October, I was fortunate to attend the AWSC (Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs) Workshop. As always, it was wonderful catching up with familiar faces and getting to know many new members who share the same passion for snowmobiling. A big congratulations to Jena Lenz, who was selected as the next AWSC Miss Snowflake! I can’t wait to follow along with her upcoming adventures.

PRESIDENT’S COMMUNIQUE

FALL WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS, RECOGNITION, AND LOOKING FORWARD

T

he Fall Workshop was filled with many updates for the membership. Earlier this month we were notified by American Income Life that the $3000 death and dismemberment Insurance had been suspended. So as of October 1, we no longer have that benefit. American Income Life may continue to reach out to those who had sent back the beneficiary cards for insurance or one of their many other programs.

We had the pleasure of celebrating the 2025 AWSC “of the year” winners. I would like to congratulate all the winners again and thank them for all they do for the sport of snowmobiling. Without our dedicated volunteers, we would not have the trail system and snowmobile program we have. And I would like to encourage all clubs and snowmobilers to think about nominating a deserving groomer, dealer, young snowmobiler, family, or club for these awards. We have so many people who deserve to be recognized for their contributions.

We asked snowmobilers as well as all counties to keep an eye on what is going on within their trail system. Watch the DOT website for road construction updates. Know what is happening with your railroad crossings. If you have state trails, natural areas, or state parks within your county, make sure you know if the DNR or the county is looking at the master plans. And finally, there are a lot

of counties that may have solar farms looking to build. It is easier to work with these entities when they start a project than it is to come in when they have the plans completed.

I am also pleased to announce that the AWSC Next Gen Riders have been awarded an ISMA (International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association) grant to put on a “first-time ride.” This grant will be used to host a ride for first-time riders. Anyone, ages 21 or older, who may want to experience snowmobiling but has never had the chance. New riders will need to be safety certified; this can be done online. This event will take place on January 24, in Mercer, Wisconsin.

The morning will be spent talking about snowmobiling and our snowmobile program, as well as safe riding, with an opportunity to practice on a snowmobile before heading out for a ride to lunch. After lunch, the next-gen riders will talk about clubs, club involvement, and how to get involved with a club within the area they live in, or if they prefer, somewhere else in the state. We will also have a groomer and a drag available to showcase how the trails are maintained.

The grant will cover rental sleds and lunch. If you know of anyone interested in participating in this ride, contact me at president@ awsc.org or Nick Grams at nextgenriderswi@gmail.com. Please go to page 30 to learn more about this event.

SAVING THE PAST, SECURING THE FUTURE From Eagle River’s World Championship Derby to our local crossings and the MS ride, every effort matters.

I

t’s hard to have a conversation about snowmobiling in the state of Wisconsin without talking about Eagle River and the World Championship Derby Track. Old racing venues like the World Derby track are important to preserve and support. They hold the keys to our snowmobiling past. It’s easy to get complacent and overlook the importance of these old venues and events. If we let them fall into ruins, they will certainly succumb to the same fate as Telemark. Eagle River Derby Complex will run its 63rd World Championship Derby in January. It’s the perfect time to escape for the weekend, spend a day at the track, visit some museums, and take in all that Eagle River has to offer. Go to as many snowmobile events as you can to help keep these spaces alive.

Railroad crossings: In 2008, the US Congress enacted the Railroad Safety Improvement Act. It required the 10 states with the highest rate of highway grade incidents to come up with a safety action plan (SAP). Flash forward to 2015, it was directed that the SAP be a requirement for the remainder 40 states. Wisconsin submitted theirs in 2022. This was drafted by the Wis DOT, the OCR (Office of the Commissioner of Railroads). The Sparta Hazelwood crossing closure was submitted by the Soo Line in 2023. While I don’t have proof that correlation is causation, it does line up. To prevent this from happening to you, you’re going to need to be in contact with your local DOT (county, township) and also make sure you have the proper paperwork and insurance for all of your private crossings.

We are still working on getting a handle on this, and it may require some legislative work and maybe a new law. Time will tell.

MS Ride: “40 Years” Hard to believe I’ve been on this ride for 40 years. All I can say is that if you choose to participate, be sure to be prepared. Come prepared to smile all weekend long. Come prepared to laugh till it hurts. Come prepared to make new friends.

Come prepared to commit to those less fortunate than you. Come prepared to make a difference in the lives of those with MS.

can’t believe that we are talking about another snowmobile season!

Everyone think snow! It has been a busy fall here at the office. Remember that AWSC hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday and 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Friday.

MEMBERSHIPS: I know the membership chairs are extremely busy this time of year, processing memberships.

When working with your rosters, please take a minute to check who is listed for your officers, making sure to include phone and email. This information is imperative for communication between AWSC and your club. I have posted a fillable form on the website to record the new officers and return to the office. Please check the address of your members, making sure you are using their current address.

We are also experiencing a greater number of members who have renewed their AWSC membership but it has not been recorded with the office here.

Membership chairs, please make sure you are completing your memberships in a timely manner and that you relay the information on when you will be doing your renewals to your membership.

ello AWSC family. My name is Jena Lenz, your 2025-2026 AWSC Miss Snowflake. I am truly honored and excited to represent and serve you all in the coming year!

I am 19 years old, from Jefferson County, and in my second year at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, majoring in Agricultural Education and minoring in Agricultural Business. I have been snowmobiling since a very young age with my family, and my passion for the sport has grown each year. Over the past couple of years, I have been fortunate to have many opportunities to grow within the snowmobiling community— I helped start the youth club in Jefferson County (JAYS), joined KAOS, helped with trail signing and grooming, and met incredible people through many club and state events. I feel these experiences have all been preparing me to be your Miss Snowflake.

Being chosen as Miss Snowflake still feels surreal! As most of you know, this wasn’t the first time I ran for Miss Snowflake. My best advice through my experiences is, if it is something you truly want, keep trying and never give up. When the time is right, it will happen.

I hit the ground running and attended my first event as Miss Snowflake in Jefferson County on November 2, at the ICE Snowmobile Club Annual Breakfast. Getting to start my Miss Snowflake year in my home county was extra special, as they have always supported my ideas, encouraged me to grow, and inspired me to do my best. I cannot wait to continue to travel as Miss Snowflake, sharing my enthusiasm for the sport with

everyone throughout the coming year. I look forward to visiting clubs and counties across the state and swapping stories, going on adventures, and making memories with the members!

I owe a huge thank you to my family for always being there for me, through the ups and downs, and for teaching me the importance of perseverance. Thank you to the AWSC for giving me this incredible opportunity to represent such a passionate community. A special thank you to KAOS for helping me strengthen my communication and public speaking skills, grow as a person, and provide opportunities that have molded me for a lifetime.

RIDE SMART, STAY SAFE By: Tanner Clark, KAOS President and Dane County Youth Advisor

W

ith the snowmobile season just around the corner, it’s time to put safety at the top of your checklist before heading out on the trail or into the mountains. While snowmobiling offers incredible thrills and breathtaking winter scenery, it also carries real risks—most of which are entirely preventable.

According to research from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), snowmobile accidents have steadily declined over the past decade. Yet this encouraging trend also reveals the leading causes behind the incidents that still occur. Nearly every snowmobile accident involves a speed component—whether it’s an inexperienced rider pushing beyond their comfort zone or a seasoned rider who “got a wild hair.” Speed-related accidents are 100 percent preventable, and preventing them starts with one simple principle: know your limits.

Alcohol use is another major factor contributing to serious and fatal crashes. A 2023 DNR study found that 68 percent of all fatal snowmobile accidents between 2018 and 2023 involved alcohol consumption. Supporting your local riding community is vital to keeping the sport alive, but staying sober behind the handlebars is key to staying alive.

Collisions with fixed objects such as trees, embankments, or fences remain a constant danger. These incidents often combine excessive

speed with reduced reaction times—both of which worsen when alcohol is involved. Riding too fast or “overriding your headlights” can distort depth perception and drastically shorten your window to react to obstacles on the trail. Reaction time decreases sharply even after a single drink, and alcohol impairs judgment, coordination, and balance—all essential for safe snowmobiling, even on familiar routes.

Familiarity itself can also be deceptive. Experienced riders often feel confident in their skills, but confidence means little in unfamiliar territory. Whether you’re a veteran or a newcomer, conditions and terrain can change quickly. Many accidents boil down to a single rule of thumb: know your limits and ride within them.

As the season kicks off, keep these key reminders in mind: Know your limits.

Never drink and ride.

Take it easy on unfamiliar trails.

Do your part to prevent accidents.

Together, we can make Wisconsin’s snowmobile season the safest yet and work toward a future of zero preventable accidents.

AWSC NEWS AWSC FALL WORKSHOP BRINGS SNOWMOBILERS TOGETHER IN STEVENS POINT

T

he AWSC Fall Workshop took place at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Stevens Point this past October, drawing in more than 300 attendees from across the state. The weekend kicked off with a fun-filled Halloween dance on Friday night, featuring creative group costumes and live music that kept everyone on the dance floor.

Saturday was packed with activity, starting with a general session that featured an excellent lineup of guest speakers who shared valuable updates and insights.

Presenters included Jillian Steffes (DNR Off-Road Motorized Recreational Grant Program Manager), Lt. Jacob Holsclaw (Conservation Warden and Off-Highway Vehicle Administrator), Drew Nussbaum (Regional Tourism Specialist, WI Department of Tourism), Dave Newman (ACSA President), and Linda Kuklinski (Military Ride).

The afternoon featured a variety of interactive workshops, and the evening concluded with a banquet recognizing this year’s Of the Year Award recipients and the crowning of the 2025-2026 Miss Snowflake. Congratulations Jena Lenz!

The weekend was a true reminder of what makes Wisconsin’s snowmobile community so special; friendly faces in the hospitality room, generous silent auction donations, and the incredible KAOS community service drive. AWSC NEWS AWSC FALL DIRECTORS MEETING SUMMARY Officer Reports President, Lori Heideman Lori reported there were 385 registered for the weekend and thanked the Portage County crew for their hospitality and for arranging for the free beer. She also thanked those who presented breakout sessions and the 12 vendors who were there. And she thanked Stormy, Don, and the office staff for their work on making the weekend a success. Lori talked about the Directors manuals that were handed out.

Vice President, Randy Murdock Randy talked about the railroad crossing in Sparta that we have been working to keep open. After a Judge placed a stay on the closure, another judge overruled the stay in September, and the crossing was removed.

Secretary, Sue Smedegard Sue reminded the directors to take notes of the meetings so they can report back to their clubs. She reported on the WATVA VIP event she and Lori attended and the opportunity they had to speak with legislative staff and state officials.

Treasurer, Steve Clark

Multi-use Trails, Don Mrotek Don reported on a possible rec wing to be added to a bridge in Black River Falls that is in the beginning stages, but is looking for funding options.

Environmental & By-laws, Dave Newman Dave gave an update on the regional planning for DNR properties.

There are 14 regions, and 8 plans have been completed. Five regions are currently in the planning process, and one is yet to start. Dave explained the 3 phases that are included in the plans.

Each step allows for public comments. County directors and their clubs need to review the plans to ensure snowmobiling is listed as an allowable use in all properties that currently have snowmobile trails and submit comments if something is missing. Dave also mentioned a couple of national issues they are watching. One is the effects the USDA reorganization could have on the Forest service and their regional offices. The other is the proposal to rescind the 2001 Roadless Rule and how that could open more Forest Service land to logging and access.

Membership, Jim Lone

Steve presented the financial report, which was approved. With dues just starting to come in, the dues increase has yet to make much of an impact.

They are working on a new software accounting program.

Jim announced the current membership numbers as of October 22, were down for this time of year. 13,127 members, 783 Commercial memberships, and 9 youth. The workshop on the commercial membership program was well attended.

The committee is challenging every county to increase its membership by 10%.

Stormy presented bids for the convention and fall workshop for 2028 and reviewed them. The directors then voted on their preferred location.

Committee Reports

They reported their numbers are down from previous years. If you have youth who are interested, please send them their way. They discussed the ACSA mountain ride and decided to send 2 KAOS members. They held a social media workshop on Saturday with a great turnout. They talked about the 3 most common apps, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, and how to improve your usage of each. KAOS members are willing to come to talk about your safety courses; just let them know. Their leadership weekend is set for February 6-8. And they announced they had a great response to their animal shelter donations.

Gary reminded everyone to keep safety in mind when working on trails this fall, keep equipment in good working order, and keep people away from power mowers. He reported that some equipment rates have changed based on the new DOT rates, and the updated list has been posted on SNARS. If you are using a tracked ag tractor or UTV with tracks, you now need to add tracks to your entry. Make sure you are entering the correct category for the equipment you are using. Grooming rates have not changed.

Gary recommended everyone review the “Guidelines for the Snowmobile Aids Program” that can be found by putting CA-002 in the search bar on the WI DNR website. This will answer many of the questions you may have about the snowmobile program.

Deb reported that they raised $4,520 at their silent auction, and the new scholarship application is available on the AWSC website.

Legislative, Sam Landes Sam announced that Rep. Chaz Green will be authoring the bill to increase fees in the Assembly, and they hope to have a Senate author soon. Once it is introduced, we will be letting everyone know what the LRB number is and asking for help in contacting your legislators, asking them to co-sponsor it. Remember that district lines have changed, so make sure you know who represents you. Sam gave an update on legislation regarding snowmobiles as emergency vehicles and on the Blue Mound State Park trail.

Snowmobile Friendly Communities, Tia Hiller Tia reported that we have awarded 45 communities so far. Applications are open and due January 5.

Audit/Insurance, Wally Thill The audit committee looked at the records for the last three months and found everything in order. American Income Life has again dropped the AWSC. They met with the representative from FESA and asked her to make a presentation to the directors in January.

Nick reported that they have worked with the executive board and applied for an ISMA grant to help fund a ride to introduce new people to snowmobiling.

They are also holding a raffle to raise funds.

Nominating Committee, Dave Newman Dave asked that anyone interested in running for office in March to contact the nominating committee before January.

Fundraising, Dean Wandel Dean thanked everyone who sold and bought $100 raffle tickets and said the raffle calendars are now available.

Safety & Education, Brian Woelfel Brian reminded everyone to ride safely this season and to remember when you are marking trails to look at it like you have never ridden it before, as someone new would be seeing it for the first time.

Snowflake Pageant, Chelsie Engleson Chelsie thanked Jamey for a fantastic job this past year and congratulated Jena. She reminded clubs that they are always looking for more contestants for the pageant. She announced that Erica Voelker and Lynsey Burzinski will be taking over as committee co-chairs.

2025 AWSC OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNERS AWSC SNOWMOBILER OF THE YEAR - PERRY HEISER Perry has been an avid snowmobiler since the early 1970s, when his father purchased their first snowmobiles for their family to enjoy. At that time, his family was a member of the WISM Riders, which had since merged with another Waunakee Club to form the Waunakee Winter Wanderers. He has been a member of an AWSC Club for over 50 years!

For many decades, Perry has worked in a wide variety of leadership positions in our club. For the past five years, Perry has served as our club’s official “Trail Boss.” Perry coordinates 90 percent of our operational efforts by coordinating closely with other club members, leaders, and volunteers to ensure all our trails are properly signed and inspected before the snow flies. Perry is our lead groomer who schedules, trains, and monitors the club’s groomer operators.

Perry’s persistent attendance, testimony, and professional messaging at numerous public meetings had a direct impact on the DOT over two years — to effectively articulate to the DOT and Dane County Reps how a simple construction adjustment on a new bridge design for a 10’ wide “non-travel lane” would ensure the trail not only survived, but would also improve safety by providing a safe space for the groomer/drag modifying their bridge plan. Perry’s 2-year effort effectively saved this club trail for snowmobilers and improved safety for our groomer operators for decades to come. He also recruited and coordinated other snowmobilers to attend and testify at these meetings. His efforts on saving and improving the safety of a short, club snowmobile trail, the DOT and Dane County deemed unworthy of saving, were nothing short of superb! Perry is one of those behind-the-scenes people who truly does not like to be recognized.

AWSC YOUNG SNOWMOBILER OF THE YEAR - TANNER CLARK Tanner’s passion and commitment to organized snowmobiling deepen each year. Growing up with the Oregon Sno-Blazers, he’s embraced the dedication and hard work needed to keep clubs and trail systems thriving through his active role in meetings, events, fundraising, trail cleanup, signage, and bridge building.

A member of multiple clubs, Tanner represents snowmobilers across the state while fostering strong community and landowner relationships, charitable giving, and volunteerism.

Each year, he devotes countless hours to landowner picnics, safety education, and events like the Brooklyn SnoHornets and Oregon Sno-Blazers Labor Day Truck/Tractor Pull, Easter Seals Blizzard Blast, and the Sno-Blazers Scavenger Hunt, as well as local charities such as the Oregon Food Pantry, Angel’s Wish, the Dane County Humane Society, Salvation Army, Beacon Homeless Shelter, and the Oregon School District.

Tanner is a member of AWSC, the Dane County Council of Snowmobile Clubs, KAOS, the Oregon Sno-Blazers, and the Mercer Area Sno-Goers. He’s served as vice president of the Dane County Council with maturity beyond his years. While attending UWPlatteville, he still found time to help reroute a trail, participate in the 2025 Clean Snowmobile Challenge, and attend the International Snowmobile Congress in Prince Edward Island. He also keeps a close eye on legislation affecting the sport, including trail access at Blue Mound State Park.

Within the Oregon Sno-Blazers, Tanner serves as a board member and youth representative, and previously as club reporter. His drive to inspire youth led him to KAOS, where he has served as Dane County Representative, vice president, and now president and Dane County Advisor. Tanner also teaches snowmobile safety for the Wisconsin DNR, creating engaging lessons on youth involvement, ride preparedness, and sobriety, continuing his mission to grow and protect the sport he loves.

AWSC FAMILY OF THE YEAR - BURZINSKI FAMILY The Burzinskis are a fun family of four-plus. They have been active in organized snowmobiling for over 26 years. Lesia & Rodney much longer, as each are from snowmobile families! Lynsey and Rachyl have snowmobiled their entire lives.

They’re all active members of the Orfordville Country Riders and involved with numerous other clubs.

The Burzinskis represent snowmobiling at club, regional, and national activities in so many ways.

Starting with their volunteering contributions at the club level.

From trail maintenance, landowner appreciation, to fundraising, the Burzinskis are quick to engage and make the event fun. They promote snowmobile safety and KAOS at their local snowmobile safety classes, recruiting youth and young riders. Also, at a club level, their family assisted with membership recruitment to ensure a neighboring club that was in danger of folding remained active and supported. They have organized and hosted a “bring a friend snowmobiling” ride, introducing, promoting, and safely showcasing the sport of snowmobiling.

At the state level, each of the Burzinski girls has represented the AWSC as Miss Snowflake. They have held leadership positions in KAOS and are now co-founders of the Next Gen Riders. Rodney, Rachyl, and Lynsey have all at one time or another presented at AWSC workshops and conventions. Lynsey was appointed by Governor Evers to the Wisconsin Snowmobile Recreation Council.

She also works in the tourism industry in the northern part of our state, promoting our sport as much as possible. Rachyl was selected as the AWSC and ACSA “Young Snowmobiler of the Year” in 2021. She is currently the editor of the Wisconsin Snowmobile News magazine, using her years of experience in KAOS and knowledge of the sport as a platform to represent. Rodney has been a County Rep and is now the Director of Rock County. Rodney and Lesia have also both been active volunteers for the KAOS program.

Nationally, the Burzinskis have attended ISC for the past eight years with KAOS, representing, promoting, and showcasing the AWSC’s youth involvement with pride.

AWSC VOLUNTEER GROOMER OF THE YEAR - TIM BIER Tim is a dedicated member with a true passion for snowmobiling, always doing everything he can to make sure the trails are the best they can be. Last year, he spent months researching rollers for our trail system and ended up designing and building one himself. He drew up his own plans, ordered the steel and parts, and even tracked down the right tires for packing trails.

Tim spent over 68 hours cutting steel, painting, welding, wiring, and assembling the roller with help from a few members. The finished product was a 110-inchwide, 25-foot-long roller with clearance lights, strobes, and 33-inch tires—built entirely from his vision. When he finally took it out on the trails, he was nearly in tears seeing how smooth and compact the trails turned out. The club was thrilled, and countylevel members quickly took notice, with several clubs reaching out for details and specs.

Snowmobiling is in Tim’s blood. He spends countless hours yearround maintaining the groomers, shed, property, and operations— plus about four hours a week on upkeep. When he’s not grooming, he’s out enjoying throttle time on local and northern trails.

He’s also active in the Green Lake Terrace Sno Streakers, attending their meetings along with the Sno-Drifters, county alliance, and other local clubs. Simply put, our club wouldn’t be the same without Tim’s dedication, hard work, and knowledge.

AWSC YOUNG VOLUNTEER GROOMER OF THE YEAR - BRODIE ERICKSON Brodie’s grooming responsibilities are extensive and vital to maintaining a high-quality, safe trail system. He regularly operates the White Thunder Riders’ equipment, including Tucker Sno-Cats, New Holland tractors, and the John Deere Gator. He’s highly skilled with grooming attachments such as drags, rollers, booms, flails, and mowers, and is always one of the first to show up for maintenance, making sure every grease zerk is taken care of and helping wherever needed.

As a young adult, Brodie’s willingness to volunteer is especially valuable. Well-maintained trails are key to rider safety and enjoyment, and his involvement continues a proud family tradition started by his dad and grandpa. With the average AWSC member age being 50-plus, dedicated younger volunteers like Brodie ensure the future of quality trails for years to come. His dedication, friendly personality, and hands-on approach keep club operations running smoothly and Iron County trails in top condition.

Beyond grooming and maintenance, Brodie actively helps with trail signage, ensuring trails are clearly marked and safe. One of his favorite roles is training adult volunteers on proper grooming equipment use, where he shares his knowledge and passion for the sport. He’s also involved in Iron County’s Snowmobile Safety Program, helping teach youth safe riding practices as they earn their snowmobile safety permits, building a stronger, safetyminded generation of riders.

The Sno-Drifters maintain 99 miles of trails in the “County of Trails,” featuring big timber, rolling hills, and cedar swamps. They operate John Deere tractors with Soucy Tracks and Trailsetter drags, with 10–15 groomers each season.

Hexco Motorsports regularly promotes clubs from all over Winnebago County and afar on their Facebook Page. In the winter and many other months, they have over 1OK followers, many of whom are snowmobile fans. Creative content promoting the sport is shared with all of their followers. This includes sharing club events and trail openings, and closures. They also promote issues facing the sport, and encourage involvement with organized snowmobiling.

INDUSTRY NEWS CHOOSING YOUR STEERING STYLE Wheel vs Sticks for Your New Groomer

W

hen a snowmobile club orders a new Prinoth groomer, they get to pick their preferred steering interface: a steering wheel or “stick” / lever controls. The choice may feel subtle on paper, but in practice, it can affect control, ergonomics, operator fatigue, and how intuitive the machine feels. In this article, we explore the pros and cons of each steering mechanism, which can be used as a conversation starter with your club before you buy your next machine.

Steering in Snow Groomers Before we dig into the pros and cons, a bit of context: Snow groomers are driven by hydrostatic hydraulic systems, with each track (left and right) driven independently. Steering is achieved by differential track speed (one track moving faster/ slower relative to the other).

Whether you use a steering wheel or levers, the operator’s inputs get translated into hydraulic commands to modulate flow/pressure to track drive motors.

Wheel Challenges Less Direct Feel / Response Because the wheel is an indirect interface (turn wheel → controller → hydraulic system), there can be a lag or damping. In soft, uneven snow, that “buffer” might reduce responsiveness compared to direct lever control.

Advantages Very Direct, Responsive Control Because each lever directly controls forward/back pressure to each track, the operator often enjoys heightened sensitivity and responsiveness. Track differential is more directly manipulated.

Aggressive Maneuvering & Tight Turns In tight terrain or steep switchbacks, the operator can apply more aggressive differential commands (e.g., holding one lever slightly back, the other forward) in an instant. This can aid sharper turning, pivoting, or tight track corrections.

Good for Experienced Operators Those who “feel” the machine often prefer sticks — it gives them the leverage and responsiveness they want. Many long-time groomer operators see stick cats as more precise or connected.

NEWS TRAILBLAZING TOGETHER FOR 40 YEARS OF WOMEN ON SNOW

2026 is Travel Through Time. Costumes are encouraged but not required. A time-honored tradition is the signature hat, decorated with year bars showing how long each rider has been part of Women on Snow. First-time participants wear pink hats, which encourages returning riders to welcome them to the group. They receive the signature hat at the banquet.

his winter marks a milestone for one of the North Woods’ most beloved traditions. The 40th Annual Women on Snow weekend will be held January 22–25, 2026, on the scenic Eagle River area trails. The Women on Snow Tour 2026 will follow on January 25-28. Check-in begins Thursday evening at the host site, Eagle Waters Resort.

The Women on Snow Tour departs Eagle Waters Resort on Sunday morning, returning Wednesday afternoon. This smaller, more advanced group includes experienced riders who enjoy a faster pace and longer daily runs. During the tour, riders will carry their own provisions on their snowmobiles, except for oil and a small bag with medications, which can be put in the support vehicle.

Launched in 1986, Women on Snow (WOS) began as a way to bring together women who loved to ride but wanted to do so in a supportive, welcoming environment. Forty years later, it’s become far more than a snowmobile weekend. It’s a celebration of adventure, friendship, and independence. Sharon WeMett, WOS Board Member, said, “Women on Snow is a great event! I’ve been attending for over 30 years, and the fun, camaraderie, and riding are the perfect mix for a special weekend.”

Women on Snow is not only about fun; it’s also about giving back.

Each year, the board members donate checks to local snowmobile clubs that maintain and groom the area’s trails. The weekend also provides a meaningful boost to local restaurants, resorts, and businesses as riders stop to refuel and explore. What started as a simple gathering has become an event that benefits the entire community.

About 120 women will explore the beautiful Vilas County snowmobile trails and visit local businesses along the way. Over the years, Women on Snow has grown into a true community. Many participants return year after year, some now riding alongside their daughters and even granddaughters. Riders travel not only from across Wisconsin, but from across the United States, drawn by the event’s reputation for camaraderie and safe, well-organized rides. Out on the trails, the women handle everything themselves — from filling gas tanks and changing spark plugs to managing breakdowns. A special thanks goes out to the support men who step in from time to time.

Women on Snow weekend prices include all lodging, lunch and dinner meals on Friday and Saturday, entertainment, and gas for the snowmobiles. The price for the weekend is $390 per person. The tour package is $410 per person and includes lodging, meals, and gas. Refreshments, oil, and incidentals are not included. Registration opens to new participants on October 15, and can be accessed through the link on Facebook @ WomenonSnow or by visiting womenonsnow.org.

To keep the trails safe and uncrowded, riders are divided into six groups. The groups don’t just ride together; they also room together and sit together at meals. Each group, led by a WOS board member, follows a unique route, stopping at different North Woods destinations along the way, but everyone still racks up about 100 miles a day. Laurel and Gary Frank, owners of Sportsman’s Chalet in St. Germain, said they “look forward to and enjoy the groups that stop by.” Laurel says she looks forward to seeing friends from her years as a leader and rider with Women on Snow. Laurel started in 1986 and remembers meeting Sandy Berner, one of the original leaders of Women on Snow, when Sandy needed Laurel to be a tail for her group. This led to Laurel eventually being a leader and on the board of directors until 2011. During “no snow years,” Laurel and Gary hosted the whole group of Women on Snow for lunch and chicken bingo.

The leading arm design (with trailing arms) kicked off what many consider the modern age of snowmobiling, where the sport moved away from leaf springs and to coil-over systems that absorbed bumps and handled well. AWSC NEWS AWSC RECIPIENT OF AN ISMA GRANT: FIRST TIME RIDE

T

he AWSC and Next Gen Riders are a recipient of an ISMA (International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association) grant. According to the ISMA website, they are a key organization representing the major snowmobile manufacturers. ISMA coordinates committees within the industry to handle concerns, snowmobile safety, promotion of snowmobiling, keep accurate statistics, and the positive economic impact snowmobiling has worldwide. ISMA also provides leadership and support to organized snowmobiling in Canada and the US, facilitating effective communications and cooperation among snowmobiling organizations, government, and the industry.

The AWSC and our Next Gen Riders are excited to host a firsttime ride designed to inspire young people who may not have the money or experience to snowmobile. We’re seeking individuals 21-35 who have never had the chance to ride before and want to try the

sport for the first time, as well as seeking out younger individulals as we are trying to grow the sport. Our goal is to get first-time riders out on a snowmobile and experience the fun firsthand. We’re partnering with a rental company to provide 10–15 snowmobiles for participants, and the ride will begin at the Mercer Area Sno-Goers Club Shed in Mercer, Wisconsin.

At the shed in the morning, the plan is to create a classroom experience where we can explain safety, including safety and gear. This classroom would focus primarily on basic safety, including riding etiquette, ride right, speed, and riding at your comfort level. We realize that in Wisconsin, if you were born after January 1, 1985, you need a safety certificate. We would ask the individuals to have this certificate completed online before the event.

We would continue with riding gear, explaining how important gear is to the riding experience.

After the classroom portion, we will continue outside with an overview of the sled and its components. First-time riders will be able to practice on a small groomed area around the shed, as well as practice a road crossing.

We will then proceed with a ride to Pine Lake Lodge for lunch, where we will start a conversation about clubs, associations, and how to get involved in a club. This conversation would include what clubs do and how getting involved is a benefit to anyone who rides a snowmobile. We would provide information on clubs nearest to the rider as well as how to locate a club anywhere in the state, encouraging them to get involved.

CLUB NEWS OLD SLEDS, NEW MEMORIES Submitted By: Judy Pauli

T

he Cross Country Cruisers will be celebrating their 56th year of being a club in 2026. The Cruisers are one of the oldest clubs in Wisconsin, maintaining over 100 miles of trails. Cruisers trails would not be in existence without volunteers who work hard throughout the year to keep them in tip-top shape.

Fundraisers are our club’s livelihood. Cruisers participate in numerous fund-raising events and community service activities throughout the year, which include: Cruisers Snofest, Beef a Rama, SloFest, Woodruff Family New Year’s Eve Celebration, Adopt a Highway, Food for Kidz, Snowmobile Safety Classes, and lots more.

Cruisers SnoFest has been very successful for the club to attract more snowmobile enthusiasts to their largest winter fundraising event each January. As snowmobiling is a family tradition, vintage snowmobiles carry memories as well as an opportunity to be creative with repairing old machines on a budget. Who doesn’t like to talk about their snowmobiles and see the old stuff, and learn about where the sport evolved from? It brings all ages together to share the nostalgia of yesteryear.

Due to the popularity of vintage snowmobiles, the Cruisers will be holding their 3rd annual Cruisers SnoFest 2026 on January 16, and 17, at the Cruisers clubhouse/barn in Arbor Vitae, WI. The first year in 2024, there were 77 sleds showing, which was great due to the lack of snow. Last year, in 2025, there was a little more snow, which increased the show to over 100 sleds. In 2026, the Cruisers plan to double the number of snowmobile entries and add more classes of restored and non-restored, starting with sleds 1969 or older, going up to sleds as new as 2000. We are also adding more classes, such as the best racing models and cutters, to the list of nostalgic rides.

Participants are from many areas of WI, MN, and MI. Who would have ever thought you might see that old sled you rode in the 60s again? Maybe even with the same snowmobile outfits you wore?

Lots of vintage enthusiasts and something for all ages. Friday is the Cruisers’ night to welcome everyone with an old-fashioned Friday Night Fish Fry and Lasagna dinner, beverages, music, and lots of raffles. Saturday is the Vintage show, shine, and ride along with food,

he Chute Pond Snowmobile Club Annual Meeting and Hayride jump-started our snowmobiling season with a beautiful ride through the Nicolet National Forest on wagons, taking in the breathtaking fall colors and enjoying great camaraderie.

We held a cookout along the trail, grilling burgers, brats, and hot dogs that were enjoyed by all. Pumpkin painting and face painting were a hit with the youth, adding even more fun to the day. Mother Nature didn’t disappoint with the vibrant fall colors, and we’re hoping she blesses us with a plentiful snow season this year. Let it SNOW!

Something new for the Cruisers in 2026 to raise funds is the Cruisers Big $10K raffle drawing that will take place later in the day on Saturday. This gives people the opportunity to enjoy the festivities during the event and purchase their ticket to possibly win big.

Cruisers hope to have a great SnoFest again in 2026 on January 16, and 17, bringing old and new together as a club and sharing experiences of the sport of snowmobiling. Thank you to all the cruisers volunteers, groomers, and trail maintenance volunteers for making our trails in top-notch shape.

FOUR CLUBS COLLABORATE WITH GROOM TO RIDE RAFFLE Submitted by: Cindy Fruhwirth, Sno-Eagles Secretary

T

he Sno-Eagles of Eagle River, Northern Lights of Three Lakes, Sno-Buddies of Conover, and the Phelps Snowmobile clubs have been collaborating for the Groom to Ride raffle sponsored by Track Side of Eagle River for many years. Prizes are donated from each of these communities, with 1st Prize being a 2026 Ski-Doo MXZ Sport 600 EFI 137” snowmobile donated by Track Side.

All four clubs share the proceeds to support trail maintenance and grooming operations. Even though snowmobile clubs receive some state reimbursement for part of these costs, it does not come close to covering all expenses. Fundraisers like this are a vital part of providing the funding needed to ensure safe and well-groomed trails for everyone.

This year, the drawing will be held on March 7, at 2:00 pm at the World Championship Derby Complex in Eagle River with dozens of raffle baskets, food, and fun! Doors will open at 11:00 am. Raffle tickets are available at local businesses in all of these communities, and you do not need to be present to win.

ACSA NEWS ACSA - SNOWMOBILERS PROMOTING SNOWMOBILERS

T

he American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA) began in 1994 and continues today to be the voice for snowmobilers on national issues.

The state snowmobile associations make up the board of directors, along with the elected officers. The current officers include: President Dave Newman from Wisconsin. Dave served as ACSA VP for two years and most recently served as president of the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs for nine years. Dave was self-employed and is an avid snowmobiler, searching for snow when necessary!

Vice President Stan Stutheit comes from Nebraska, where he has served as president, vice president, and treasurer. Stan comes with a John Deere Farm Equipment Dealership background and has also served as the director for the North America Equipment Dealers Association. Stan always travels to find the snow, from South Dakota to Montana, Wyoming and Colorado.

Serving as Secretary/Treasurer is Len Neisler from Indiana. Len has served in many different roles with the Indiana Snowmobilers Association and has been serving as the ACSA Secretary/Treasurer, a natural position with his financial planner background. Len loves to ride and can often be found on the trails somewhere in the Midwest - or as far as Quebec!

Immediate Past President Bert Miller hails from Cody, Wyoming, where he manages a Chevrolet Dealership. Bert served in many levels with the Wyoming State Snowmobile Association and

TIPS BEFORE THE SNOW FLIES Simple steps to make sure your sled’s ready when the trails open

A

s December settles in and Wisconsin riders start watching the forecasts, now’s the perfect time to give your sled a quick once-over before those trails open. Most of us have our preseason routines down, but a little extra attention now can save a lot of frustration once you’re miles from the trailer or shop.

Double-check the simple stuff: fluids, belts, carbides, track tension, and alignment. Make sure everything’s greased and the battery’s holding strong. Inspect your spark plugs, and ensure all lights are working properly for those early morning or evening rides. It’s also a good time to pack a small emergency kit with a spare belt, spark plugs, and basic tools.

Start your sled and let it run for a few minutes to make sure everything sounds right and fires up the way it should. A little preparation and time in the shop now means more time on the snow later. Tune up, gear up, and get ready; here’s to a smooth start to the season and plenty of miles ahead.
