SEASONS CHANGE, ADVENTURES CONTINUE

hope everyone had a fantastic winter and managed to get out on the trails when conditions allowed. While this past snow season may not have delivered the deep powder or consistently perfect conditions we’ve enjoyed in past winters, it was still an improvement over last year. Every chance to get out and ride is a blessing, and I was fortunate to spend some quality time on the trails.

One of the highlights for me was logging a few miles on the trails up in beautiful Iron County, northern Wisconsin. Although the conditions weren’t always ideal, the trails were open, and it was wonderful to see fellow riders making the most of the season. Even more encouraging was the positive impact on local businesses, many of which rely on snowmobile traffic during the winter months. There’s something special about the camaraderie among snowmobilers and the way this sport supports entire communities, it’s a powerful reminder of what makes this lifestyle so rewarding.

In this issue, we’ve packed in a lot of exciting content. From updates on the latest ATV and UTV models to major news for Arctic Cat, there’s plenty here to keep you informed and inspired. Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast, a weekend rider, or just keeping tabs on what’s new in the industry, there’s something for everyone on these pages. Now, as we shift into spring and summer, there’s a whole new season of outdoor adventure waiting for us. I’m looking forward to the upcoming events, trail rides, and all the memorable moments that come with warmer weather. Stay safe, ride smart, and enjoy every mile!

RENEWAL OF PASSION FOR GENERATIONS TO COME

RIVER FALLS, April 24, 2025)

ormer Arctic Cat executive, Brad Darling, and an Investment Group acquire the Thief River Falls-based manufacturer of snowmobiles, ATVs, and Side-by-Sides. Newly appointed CEO and President of Arctic Cat, Brad Darling, is eager to start moving the brand forward, stating, “The pursuit of the checkered flag is in Arctic Cat’s DNA. It’s what we were built on. Like anyone who has ever grabbed the throttle, it’s a relentless drive that pushes us forward and sparks our passion. Today is the start of a new chapter, one where Arctic Cat returns to the race, but with a powerful understanding: this race is never-ending, and our intent is to lead.”

Since taking ownership of Arctic Cat in 2017, Textron Specialized Vehicles has invested a great deal of time and resources to keep the brand and its technology at the forefront. This dedication was most recently proven with the release of the all-new Arctic Cat 858 C-TEC2™ engine and Catalyst snowmobile chassis. “We seek to continue Arctic Cat’s investment in its brand, products, people, and dealers, extending its positive momentum. As a permanent fixture of Thief River Falls, MN, for over 63 years, this iconic brand has benefited from the passion of not only the employees but also the entire community. We are now able to wipe away any uncertainty and are looking ahead with great excitement,” continued Mr. Darling.

After a 17-year tenure at Arctic Cat, Mr. Darling assumed the role of CEO and President of ARGO in 2016, where he remains today. Founded in 1967, ARGO is the worldwide leader for amphibious Xtreme Terrain Vehicles (XTVs). Their unmistakable 6- and 8-wheeled amphibious vehicles are well known for their ability to “Go Anywhere.” Mr. Darling will continue to lead both companies into the future while leaning on potential synergies shared within the off-road segment. While each brand will be owned and operated separately, the brand alignment of ARGO alongside Arctic Cat is a perfect match as Arctic Cat’s line of machines brings the passion on and off the trail, while the ARGO adventure starts where the trail ends.

Whether you’re on-trail, off-trail, reaching new elevations, or pushing limits on the track, Arctic Cat will be here, ready to support every checkered flag in your future.

Arctic Cat is here to Share Our Passion with you for generations to come!

MICHIGAN TECH’S CLEAN SNOWMOBILE TEAM TAKES FIRST PLACE IN SAE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

The SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge team took home first place in the sparked ignition snowmobile challenge. (Images courtesy of Michigan Tech Advanced Motorsports Enterprise)

ichigan Tech’s spark ignition (SI) team claimed first place overall and first in the design category at this year’s SAE International Clean Snowmobile Challenge, at the World Championship Derby Complex in Eagle River, Wisconsin. The team competed with two snowmobiles: one in the SI category and another in the compression ignition diesel utility snowmobile (CI) competition, where they earned second place. The CI category is currently being phased out. The 2025 competition featured 14 teams from across the U.S. and Canada.

Part of Michigan Tech’s Advanced Motorsports Enterprise, the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge team is a multidisciplinary, student-run organization focused on improving emissions, noise reduction, and performance of modern snowmobiles. Students lead every aspect of the team — from engineering and electrical systems to project management and finance.

For over 15 years, Michigan Tech hosted the competition at its Keweenaw Research Center. This year’s success in Eagle River marks the culmination of dedicated student work and collaboration.

Team co-presidents Sophie Bollin, a mechanical engineering graduate student, and Jared Ott, a senior in mechanical engineering, praised the team’s efforts and the impact the experience has had on their careers.

SKI-DOO RACERS WIN 2025 IRON DOG, WORLD’S LONGEST, TOUGHEST SNOWMOBILE RACE

Second Iron Dog win for teammates, Brad George and Robby Schachle

Ski-Doo racers Tyler Aklestad and Aaron Loyer finish third

Valcourt, Quebec, February 22, 2025

ki-Doo captured two podium positions in the 2025 Iron Dog, the world’s longest, toughest snowmobile race.

Veteran racers, Brad George and Robby Schachle, teamed up for their second win in the legendary event that punishes man and machine for more than 2,500 miles across the rugged Alaskan backcountry. A second Ski-Doo team of Tyler Aklestad and Aaron Loyer also raced their way onto the podium with a third-place finish.

“We are extremely proud of the grit, determination, and intelligence our riders displayed in winning this year’s Iron Dog race,” stated Jean-Francois Leclerc, Ski-Doo and Can-Am

Racing Manager. “Speed and durability are a necessity to win, but so is knowing when to push hard and when to preserve your snowmobile, and these guys balanced it perfectly. Congratulations to them and all the Iron Dog competitors.”

This year’s Iron Dog presented some very unusual conditions. Racers had to deal with low or no snow in many areas, expertly navigating obstacles like rocks, logs, and frozen dirt, along with open water and deep snow in other sections. Add in the brutal cold and wind that Alaska is known for, and this year’s competition lived up to its incredible difficulty.

Each of the podium-finishing Ski-Doo racers rode the acclaimed Ski-Doo MXZ X-RS 600R E-TEC – the same exact snowmobile people can buy off of showroom floors, not a special one-off race machine. Ski-Doo designers and engineers leverage feedback and lessons from grueling races like the Iron Dog to build high-performance DNA into every MXZ model, and its customers benefit with proven performance, reliability, and an advanced design.

The 2026 Ski-Doo model lineup was revealed, and riders were able to order the Iron Dog-winning MXZ X-RS. For complete details on all the 2026 Ski-Doo news and models, visit ski-doo.com. brp.com @BRPNews

X RACING TAKES SUNDAY

FUNDAY SNOWMOBILE EVENTS TO NEW MARKETS

Affordable, fun concept fuels growth spurt in Midwest, Northeast

LK RIVER, Minnesota (May 5, 2025) — After three seasons of steady growth in Minnesota and a successful inaugural effort last winter in New England, officials at X Racing are working to expose their family-based ‘Sunday Funday’ style of snowmobile racing to more new faces in 2026.

Sunday Funday programs utilize a Le Mans-style track with bumps, mellow jumps, and banked corners. The curb appeal comes from the variety of classes, which include one for just about every sled ever built. Ditchbangers, 120cc and 200cc sleds for youth, and vintage machines are all part of the package.

“The idea of having classes for older sleds, not just modern race-specific machines, is why this program is growing so quickly,” X Racing President Joe Duncan said. “We brought 71 new racers to the sport in Minnesota, and several more out east last winter. The concept is starting to gain traction.

“For 2026, we want to introduce the sport to the general public to support snowmobiling itself. We’ve shown tons of former snocross racers how they can still enjoy the sport without breaking the bank. Now we want to show all snowmobile enthusiasts this exciting opportunity to race for big fun.”

The format features two chances for each rider to earn a trophy, with a qualifying Heat and Final for each class in the morning and again in the afternoon. No extra entry fee; just two chances to go racing, lots of laps on the track, and plenty of hearty laughs.

“We’ll have several opportunities in 2026 for folks to come and give this family-geared program a chance. There’s always a lot of laughs and high-fives. This deal isn’t about trophies and bragging rights, it’s about having FUN on a winter day. It’s designed for ‘Familyz, Kidz and Teenz,’ and makes kids smile.”

For much of the past 20 years or so, the idea of going snowmobile racing in any state meant taking on stiff competition, an athletic training program, and a highlyspecialized machine designed specifically for racing. The high costs kept people away. Sunday Funday is an affordable option to enjoy racing.

X Racing is looking for active snowmobile clubs or enthusiasts to get involved in hosting races.

“If you have the desire to run Sunday Funday events and good people around you, we have everything in place to make it happen,” Duncan added. “As this affordable style of racing takes hold, we’ll need some help. Those with an interest can contact me at the email address listed below.”

X Racing officials would like to thank their valued marketing partners, including the Hunter Houle Memorial Foundation, Aroplax Corporation, Studboy Traction, Hanco Utilities, USI Skis, FOX, C&A Pro Skis, Woody’s, Husqvarna, DLO Excavating, and CF Moto, for their continued support.

NORTHERN MINNESOTA ATV ADVENTURES

PROSPECTORS TRAIL MN

The Prospectors Trail System links the communities of Ely, Babbitt, Embarrass, Tower, and Soudan using a mix of forest roads, wooded trails, and county road rights-of-way. It also connects with the established ATV trail networks in Lake and Cook counties. Riders will experience a variety of forest types and ecosystems along the way—from classic North Woods terrain with pine, aspen, and rocky outcrops to lowlands, bogs, and wetlands teeming with wildlife. The trails are provided by the City of Ely and maintained by the Prospectors ATV Trail Alliance.

Thanks to the Prospector Loop trail system, ATV riders can explore over 250 miles of trails in the Ely area. This network connects Ely, Babbitt, Embarrass, Tower, and the North Shore, offering a diverse mix of trail experiences. Riders can also travel from Ely to Crane Lake via the Echo Trail, using a combination of gravel and paved roads.

Pick up a Prospector Loop map at area gas stations for the most accurate local trail information. These maps detail trails maintained by the local Prospector ATV Club. Trail routes are also available in the Ride Command app and in the Motorized Recreation Visitor Maps, which can be found at the U.S. Forest Service’s Kawishiwi Ranger District office in Ely. All city streets and avenues in Ely are open to ATV traffic, except for Sheridan Street and Highway 1.

The first 10 miles of the Taconite State Trail, maintained by the Minnesota DNR, are open to ATV riders from the west side of Ely to the Purvis Lake shelter. From there, you can cross the new Beaver River Bridge and continue on to Babbitt or take

a route west toward Embarrass and Tower. Trail Four, near Purvis, connects with Trail Three—see the map for details.

For one of the most scenic rides, head east out of Ely across the steel bridge over the Kawishiwi River, where a picnic site offers a great spot to rest. From there, continue to the Mattila Shelter and either ride toward the North Shore or loop back to Babbitt via the Jackpot Loop, which passes through the area affected by the 2021 Greenwood Forest Fire.

All Prospector trails are well-marked and available in the free Polaris Ride Command app. Updated trail maps are also accessible via Avenza Maps.

VOYAGEUR ATV TRAILS

Tucked in northern Minnesota, the Voyageur ATV Trail system stretches over 386 miles and links towns like Crane Lake, Ely, and Cook. Riders can enjoy everything from dense woods to river overlooks, with must-see spots like Vermilion Falls and the Pelican River. The terrain has something for everyone— easygoing stretches for new riders and more technical sections for those looking for a challenge.

There’s plenty of parking in nearby towns, and you’ll find fuel, food, and lodging close by. Open from May through October, the trails also connect to others like the Prospectors Trail, giving you even more options to explore.

DAVID DILL/TACONITE TRAIL

Covering 165 miles across northern Minnesota, the David Dill/ Taconite Trail mixes forest routes with old rail lines. It honors the late Rep. David Dill and is a top pick for riders who enjoy a scenic, remote ride through forests and wetlands. It’s a great trail for both new and experienced riders.

You can access the trail near Ely or Grand Rapids, with parking available along the way. Open May through October, this wellkept trail is open to both Class I and II ATVs and offers a long riding season in Minnesota’s backcountry.

FOREST RIDERS TRAIL

Located just north of Park Rapids, the Forest Riders Trail offers 122 miles of fun across a variety of state forests, including Two Inlets and Smoky Hills, with links to Paul Bunyan State Forest near Lake George. Open from May through November, this trail allows Class II ATVs and offers a nice mix of flat and hilly terrain for all skill levels.

Park at any of the surrounding forests—Two Inlets and Lake George are popular starting points, both easily reached from Route 71.

FOURTOWN-GRYGLA

Stretching over 170 miles, the Fourtown-Grygla Trail runs through scenic northern Minnesota.
