Midwest Mountaineering is pleased to host the legendary Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is an international competition featuring the world’s best films and videos on mountain subjects. Each year, a pre-screening committee selects 30 to 40 finalists. An international jury then determines the best films and awards prizes in eight categories: Grand Prize, Climbing, Mountain Sports, Mountain Environment, Mountain Culture, Short Mountain Film and Feature-Length Mountain Fiction. Audience members decide the winner of the People’s Choice Award. This year we are offering you a mini-version of the Festival in Banff, Canada with three nights of films. (Different films each night.)

A Modern Viking Ship

Suzanne Arnesen In April 2016, the Draken Harald HĂĽrfagre left its homeport of Haugesund, Norway bound for the American continent. The purpose of the expedition was to re-create one of the most legendary sea voyages - the first transatlantic crossing, and the Viking discovery of the New World more than a thousand years ago.

Suzanne Arnesen, a 22 year-old from Norway, was a part of the crew on this expedition. Through photos and film clips, she will take you through the journey of the Draken H.H. from the very beginning, with the construction of the ship, to the adventures in the North Atlantic, the challenges in the Great Lakes, and of course, the everyday life onboard.

As a voice for girls and women to make choices outside of what society some times expects from them, Suzanne hopes to inspire others to take journeys that challenge the daily habits and routines that make up our modern world. The crew on the Draken H.H consisted of 50 percent women, proof that women and men, old or young, can take expeditions to the world's remote outposts and hostile places.

Suzanne Arnesen was born in Stockholm and raised in Oslo, to a family with strong ties to the sea.

After graduating from high school, Suzanne followed here dream of becoming a professional tall-ship sailor: She enrolled in a maritime training program on the Danish training ship, Georg Stage, and started working on the Norwegian full rigged ship Christian Radich in 2014.

In February 2016 she stepped foot on the Draken Harald HĂĽrfagre, a Norwegian built traditional, longboat Viking ship. In April of this year, Suzanne embarked on a fantastic journey, sailing the same route of her Viking ancestors, across the North Atlantic ocean, from Norway to Iceland to Greenland and finally, North America.

A Year in the Wilderness

Dave and Amy Freeman On September 23, 2015, Dave and Amy teamed up with the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters and embarked on a yearlong adventure in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

The Freemans traveled roughly 3,000 miles by canoe and ski with sled dogs, visiting about 500 lakes, rivers and streams throughout the year. That's 365 days exploring and documenting the Wilderness with the purpose of keeping America's most visited wilderness area in people's consciousnesses throughout the entire year. They used their adventure as a platform to educate others about the threat posed by Twin Metals and other sulfide-ore copper mines being proposed near the BWCAW. Diverging from the typical expedition approach of traveling from point A to point B, the Freemans entered the wilderness with the intent to bear witness to all the seasons in the biggest wilderness area east of the Rockies and north of the Everglades. They learned to slow down and closely observe what was going on around them– from metamorphosing of dragonflies to the wanderings of a wolf pack. They were out there as ice formed on the lakes and then melted again. They saw the forest awaken and birds return. If you love the Boundary Waters or wild places in general, if you're curious about the latest developments in the fight to protect the BWCAW watershed from copper mining, what the Freemans witnessed, how their relationship fared, lessons they learned, or practical tips for doing an expedition of your own, this presentation and short film are a must-see.

Explorers (and 2014 National Geographic Adventurers of the Year) Dave and Amy Freeman have traveled over 30,000 miles by kayak, canoe and dogsled through some of the world’s wildest places, from the Amazon to the Arctic.

The Freemans also run the Wilderness Classroom, an educational nonprofit organization that introduces kids to wild places throughout the world. They actively engage thousands of elementary and middle school students in their expeditions through www.wildernessclassroom.org, video conferencing and live school programs.

When Dave and Amy aren’t on expeditions or speaking tours, they guide canoe, kayak and dogsledding trips near Grand Marais and Ely, MN Last year Dave and Amy were inducted into the MN Explorer and Adventurer’s Hall of Fame. California Wine Country, Hiking and Highway 1: A Romantic Getaway

Yosemite Rod and Sharon Johnson Rod and Sharon deviate from their usual adrenaline producing adventure to do this fun, relaxing, romantic trip to California last month.

They will have slides and an informational handout on the redwoods, Big Sur, Muir Woods, San Simeon, Paso Robles, the Sonoma and Napa Valleys and their world-class wine and food.

Rod and Sharon Johnson Yosemite National Park has something for everyone: 3,000' sheer granite cliffs rising dead vertical on either side of Yosemite Valley, 1,000' waterfalls, spectacular hiking trails winding to the top of the Valley, and fantastic backpacking above the Valley in the high country. This is Rod and Sharon's favorite place in the world. Recommended hikes include Rod's favorite hike in the world, the hike to the summit of Half Dome; the Nevada Falls trail; the Vernal Falls trail; and the Yosemite Falls trail. Recommended backpacking includes the John Muir Trail, Little Yosemite, Ansel Adams Wilderness and Tuolumne Meadows to Sonora Pass. The Valley is famed as a climber's paradise.

Rod and Sharon will share bear stories, talk about permits, and hand out a resource sheet with lots of helpful information. They'll discuss where to stay: campgrounds, Yosemite Valley Lodge, the Wawona Hotel and the Ahwahnee.

All four seasons offer something special in Yosemite: summer's great for backpacking but hot and crowded in the Valley, fall is Rod and Sharon's favorite time, winter is quiet, with skiing options at the top of the Valley, and spring temperatures are ideal, although there's snow in the high country. Join Rod and Sharon and get a taste of some of the awesome adventures you can experience in Yosemite National Park in all four seasons.

Utah Hiking and Canyoneering Rod and Sharon Johnson Rod and Sharon Johnson think Utah packs the most bang for your buck for outdoor adventures.

You can make it there in a hard day's drive, camp free on BLM land or take advantage of the many other camping and lodging options.

This presentation will include Zion National Park, the San Rafael Swell, Buckskin Gulch, Little Wild Horse Canyon (a beginner slot canyon), Ding and Dang Canyons (intermediate slot canyons), Pine Creek canyon (a technical slot canyon), a few canyons in the Grand Staircase - Escalante area, the Angels' Landing hike, the Wave hike, the Virgin River Narrows hike and the Subway. New to their Utah presentation is driving the White Rim Trail last June.

Dogsledding with Greenland's Polar Inuit

Paul Schurke The region is referred to as “Thule,” the ancient Greek word for the world’s northernmost realm.

And indeed northwest Greenland is home to the world’s northernmost culture, the Polar Inuit. Early explorers admired and emulated their skills for living and traveling in the frozen north. Today, dogsledding & subsistence hunting remains a way of life for their communities.

In this presentation, Paul Schurke, a seasoned Arctic & Antarctic adventurer and director of Ely’s Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge, will share his experiences traveling with Polar Inuit hunters on many trips over the past 15 years. Outside Magazine has ranked these Wintergreen trips among "Top 25 Adventures of a Lifetime,” National Geographic documented them with their film “Ice Riders," and Smithsonian Magazine featured them in a cover story.

Adding to the intrigue is that Paul's Inuit colleagues include Usarkuk Henson. He's the great grandson of Matthew Henson, the black American colleague of Robert Peary. A century back, these explorers spent many seasons with the Polar Inuit preparing for their North Pole expeditions. They left behind mixed blood children whose descendants remain the world's best polar travelers and who have helped guide Paul's trips. These trips feature the Arctic's most stunning & varied scenery: pack ice and ice bergs, sea cliffs & glaciers, mountain passes and arctic tundra. And the Thule region, the northern terminus of the warming gulf stream current, is an oasis of arctic life. Shoreline settlements, hunting camps and Inuit historic sites attest to the time-honored providence of this "happy hunting ground."

Arctic adventurer Paul Schurke is best known for having retraced (with Will Steger in 1986) Robert Peary’s 1909 dogsled expedition to the North Pole. In addition, Paul retraced Ernest Shackleton’s traverse of South Georgia Island on the 1914 “Endurance” expedition to Antarctica, took his dogs through Svalbald, Greenland, and of course, northern Minnesota.

When not adventuring in the polar regions, Paul operates Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge in Ely, Minnesota. He is an author and outdoor educator who received the “Explorer Award” from the International Center for Exploration, the “Adventurer of the Year” from Outside Magazine and the "Environmental Hero" award from the Wilderness Society.

But as Paul will share, this remote and seemingly pristine region has not escaped degradation. Unfortunately, it's also home to a decommissioned Cold War-era US military base with impacts that continue to be environmental threats. An unrecoverable hydrogen bomb that may be releasing radiation lies at the bottom of a fiord from a 1968 airplane crash. And as outlined in a recent NPR story, arctic scientists are concerned that an experimental military camp built inside the inland ice cap and abandoned 50 years ago may soon be exposed again due to glacial melting, along with its buried PCBs and radioactive remnants of its nuclear-powered generating plant.

Paul will also outline plans for his return trip to dogsled with the Polar Inuit this coming spring. Having been engaged in dogsledding for over 30 years, he considers these trips his golden opportunity to continue learning from the timeless masters of the art.

Dogsledding Hudson Bay It’s only 500 miles north of Minnesota – just a day’s drive (if there was a road going there!) Yet Hudson Bay offers a full-bore Arctic experience and the Polar Bear town of Churchill is as remote, wild and woolly as any Arctic community out there.

Paul Schurke, who’s been adventuring there for 20 years with his Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge, will share stories of sledding through world’s largest polar bear nursery, hiking with bears during their fall migration and enduring the region’s ‘blizzard of the century’ while enjoying opera in a snow shelter.

Tails and Tales - Arctic adventurer Paul Schurke is passionate about “man’s best friend.” In this talk, he’ll share quirky facts, insights & images about the curious journey that transformed Canis Lupus (gray wolves) into the hundreds of breeds of Canis Lupus Familiaris that grace our existence today with companionship as well as service. Paul will explore the tug that dogs have on our heart strings and he’ll share dog stories, including the classic from his polar exploring career about the curious destiny of “The Dog Named Sam.” He’ll also discuss the art of animal storytelling & how you can draw from special experiences with pets or wild animals to add to your own campfire repertoire.

This subarctic coastline has lots of lore: ship wrecks, the “Tundra Train,” the Polar Bear Jail, a crenulated stone fortress, and a mushing friend of Paul’s whose sled dogs have become film sensations for frolicking with polar bears. And did we mention it’s the best place on the planet for viewing Northern Lights?

Footing it around the World

Andrew Seissman Andrew Seissman was born and raised in St. Paul Minnesota. After leading a fairly normal life, he left home at age 19 for a two-year bike trip from St. Paul to Tierra del Fuego and back, hitting the western, southern, and easternmost points of South America with a budget of around $2000.

After that he canoed down the Mississippi from St. Paul to New Orleans. Ready for a new hemisphere, at age 22 he sailed halfway across the Atlantic Ocean until the boat hit a whale, sank and he was rescued by a cargo ship and taken to Italy.

During the next three years he walked around the world on a budget of around $6000. Most recently, his canoe trip down the Amazon River was cut short by drug traffickers who tried to kidnap and kill him. He suffered a broken leg, massive head trauma and managed to make it back home.

Have you ever wondered how many shoes you would go through if you walked around the world?

In this presentation, Andrew Seissman, who spent almost three years walking 17,000-miles through 24 countries will tell you the answer to this question, and a whole lot more. Andrew will go over the events that led to his decision to walk around the world and from there, delve into the many incidents and close calls he experience on his trek. He’ll share stories of fear, love and incredible generosity as he recounts eye-brow raising visits to a Georgian brothel, drinking Turkish chai while busking, a Kazakh wedding, sketchy Mongolian roads, and of course the diarrhea, vomiting, marijuana and the police encounters that happen when one walks around the world. Extra bonus: these stories will be told along with some songs he learned along the way on his violin.

Surviving the Everest Avalanche: How the Mountains Humble Us

After months of training and years of mountaineering expeditions, Andrew Towne was ready to attempt Everest.

He and his team had hiked up the Khumbu Valley and begun making acclimatization rotations up the mountain. Then a 7.3 earthquake unleashed a wall of ice and rock down onto Everest basecamp from thousands of feet above. After surviving the avalanche, Andrew and his team converted their camp into a makeshift hospital for helping the dozens of dead and dying climbers.

In this presentation, Andrew will discuss the life and leadership lessons he learned from the avalanche and aftermath. In addition to this harrowing tale, he will also share a few things he learned about life while overcoming his fear of heights, struggling through a 23 hour summit day on Denali, and helping to rescue an injured climber almost four miles above sea level on Mt. Aconcagua.

Andrew Towne grew up in Grand Forks, ND and developed a love of adventure after his high school German teacher encouraged him to spend a year abroad as an exchange student. A national champion rower and runner, Andrew got into mountaineering as a way of confronting his fear of heights.

The thrill of overcoming vertigo motivated him to take on larger mountains, and he has completed six of the seven continental summits. Andrew studied International Relations at Yale, served in Iraq as a CIA terrorist targeter, and earned his JD/MBA from the University of Pennsylvania. A member of the Minnesota Bar and Mill City Runner, Andrew now works in the Boston Consulting Group's Minneapolis office.

“Ski shoeing” takes advantage of the limited snowfall winters that we’ve been having lately. “Ski shoes” are a hybrid between XC skis and snowshoes and are a lot of fun to use! This program will cover equipment, where to go (and also not to), what to wear, what to bring, and safety.

Started when only a handful of these races existed, Superior is one of the legacy hundred-mile runs in the country.

We’ll explore the race’s history, culture, and geography through humor, slides, photos, tips on ultramarathon training, and tales of individual successes and failures on the trail. As Superior 100 race historian (and multiple finisher), Kevin Langton has interviewed and run with many of the race’s runners, directors, and volunteers for his book that gives a 360-degree view of the race.

Martin Kubik is a life long advocate for backpacking trails in the BWCAW, founder of the Kekekabic Trail Club (kek.org) and the Boundary Waters Advisory Committee (bwac.homestead.com).

He’s studied the ways endurance athletes train their bodies, minds, and spirits to explore physical boundaries. He is a writer and photographer living in Mankato, Minnesota.

Our ascent of Kilimanjaro can be considered a trek since the terrain, while steep at times, is covered in trail all the way to the summit. Hiking the Wonderland Trail Michelle Schroeder NThe Wonderland Trail circumnavigates captivating Mt. Rainier in Washington State, covering 93 challenging and beautiful miles of rainforest on the west, ice fields and sweeping, open alpine on the east, with stunning views in every direction and an ever-changing profile of Mt. Rainier.

The highest point on the trail is only 6,750 feet, yet this trail is considered “strenuous.” Why? Cumulative elevation gain and loss is more than 22,000 feet, because of the deep watersheds carved out by glaciers, 25 of which are substantial enough to be named. Only 200 to 250 people complete the trail each year. In 2013, Michelle was one of them.
