2020 has proven to be a year where we have all had to make significant changes to the way we live, work and play. Our goal at Hart Ranch is to provide the best possible camping experience while maintaining the safest standards according to CDC, state and local guidelines.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience as we work hard to preserve the integrity of Hart Ranch while maintaining new operational requirements. Throughout this pandemic, and beyond, we will continue to provide exceptional service, exceptional quality and exceptional memories.

We will achieve this by providing a safe, fun, friendly environment where families can have the opportunity to participate in a variety of recreational, charitable and educational activities.

THE LEGEND of Hart Ranch His name was John Harrison Hart, and he settled the ranch in the 1880s. It is only fitting that this land bares his name today. Hart was straight from the pages of Old West history, and he carved out his ranching empire while Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane roamed the streets of Lead and Deadwood.

There is much about him which is legend, but far more which is fact. This bull driver, Civil War fighter, scout, pioneer, and frontiersman blazed a reputation remembered even today by those who live around the ranch. The legend says he arrived in the Black Hills with only $15 in his pocket and survived the first winter by chopping wood for 75 cents a cord. The facts show his hard work, entrepreneurial skills, and innovative mind parlayed what little he had into a successful freight line from Pierre to Rapid City and Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The legend says he never learned to drive a car, even though he lived to see World War II. The fact is that you still can find people who remember driving him around his ranch when – too old to ride a horse or wagon anymore – he just couldn’t stand being away from the land he loved.

The final chapter of our story is the purchase of the 13,000-acre Hart Ranch in 1983 and the construction of the Camping Resort. In 1984 the membership was deeded for the 195-acre resort.

There are several companies associated with the Hart Ranch name – Hart Ranch Golf Course and Hart Ranch Development Company. The Hart Ranch Camping Resort Club is an independent and separate corporation.

CHECK-IN/CHECKOUT Information Check-in time for an RV or tent site is 2:00 PM. Check-in time for cabins is 3:00 PM. Checkout time is 11:00 AM. Late fees will apply.

Resort activities information can be found on our cable channel 23, on our website at HRResort.org, on our app, Facebook page, or on our activities schedule available in the lodge.

Wood fires are prohibited at your site. However, propane fire pits, charcoal and propane grills are allowed.

Do not tie clotheslines, pets, exercise bands, swings, bird feeders, or any other item to the trees, picnic tables, electrical posts and other resort property.

The speed limit is 10 MPH. Let’s keep our children and pedestrians safe. Speeding fines will apply.

Quiet hours are from 10:00 PM to 7:30 AM.

Dispose of all garbage in the containers provided throughout the resort. Recycling bins are located at the entrance of the storage yard for glass, plastic, aluminum and cardboard.

Parking is limited to designated paved and gravel areas. Please do not park on the grass.

Pets are restricted to the south side of the resort, the dog run, Meadowlands, tent area and hiking trail.

Leash laws are in effect at all times. Please clean up after your pets so we can all enjoy the grounds.

Please pick up after your family and guests. This will help keep your maintenance fees low!

Be respectful of your fellow campers. Refrain from walking through campsites. Please use the roads.

Tents must be off the grass from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM (except in the designated tenting area). Limit two tents per site.

If you are expecting visitors to your site/cabin, please notify the Welcome Center at 605-737-5370.

Sealed connections are required for all sewer hookups.

If you have a pet fence, please do not extend it by more than 2 feet onto the grass next to your site. In addition, please rotate it from one location to another to prevent the grass from being impacted.

Alcohol is allowed at your site or unit, designated picnic shelters and at Hart Ranch hosted events.

SERVICES BUSINESS CENTER: Head to the lobby where you will find computers with complimentary internet access and printers available for guest use.

Winterizing / De-winterizing Mounting and Balancing Tires up to 20” Check with the Maintenance Office for more detailed information.

FAX AND COPY SERVICES: If faxes or copies are needed, they are available for a fee. See the Front Desk for rates and availability.

Repairing your vehicle or changing oil on your site is not allowed. Oil changes are available at the Maintenance Shop. Check with the shop staff to schedule an appointment.

RV STORAGE: Short term storage is available for both members and non-members. Long-term camper storage is available for members only at reasonable rates. See the Front Desk for more information.

MAIL FORWARDING: Become a legal resident of South Dakota. (No state income tax!) Ask the mailroom staff for details on how to forward your mail from your permanent home to Hart Ranch for your summer stay.

RV STORAGE MOVES: For just $12 each way, let our experienced movers take your camper out of storage and place it on your site! When you’re done, we’ll even move it back for you. Let us do the work!

HART MART CONVENIENCE STORE: Did you forget to pack something? The Hart Mart Convenience Store features 24-hr gas and diesel, groceries, beer, wine, clothing, souvenirs, ice, and much more! Stop in to pick up your Black Hills regalia as well as necessities. ATM located at the lower lodge.

MAINTENANCE SHOP SERVICES: Propane: Check channel 23 for current hours Tire Repairs: Cars and Pickups Oil Changes: Cars, Pickups and Small Motorhomes

Laundry Laundry facilities are available at all Comfort Stations throughout Hart Ranch. A laundry card is required to operate all washers and dryers (no coin operated machines are available on site). The cost to wash and dry an average load of laundry is $4 ($2.00 wash, $2.00 dry). Please stop at the Front Desk to secure your laundry card and instructions on how to load and use it.

RECREATION ACTIVITY CARDS: Activity Cards are for sale at the Family Rec Center for use in checking out equipment, games, movies, etc. They are permanent, non-refundable, and work from year to year. They can be purchased for both members and guests for $6 each.

FAMILY REC CENTER HOURS: Activity equipment is available from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Hours and availability of equipment during the off-season are limited. The lodge will carry some equipment for use during the off-season.

DISC GOLF: Disc golf supplies are available with the use of your activities card. Supplies are located in the Family Rec Center and the course is located next to the Welcome Center at the front of the property.

FAMILY REUNIONS, RALLIES AND GROUP EVENTS: Please contact the lodge for information regarding these events. Rates and availability will vary depending on occupancy. Group rates and packages can be tailored to meet your individual requests! Let Hart Ranch host your next major event!

JUNIOR CAMPER PROGRAM: The Junior Camper Program runs from Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 AM to Noon. Children ages 7-12 will be in Picnic Shelter A. PEE WEE CAMPER PROGRAM: The Pee Wee Camper Program runs from Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Children ages 3-6 will be in the Family Rec Center and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

PASTURE GOLF EQUIPMENT: A limited supply of golf clubs are available. A pack of 3 balls

GOLF CART RENTALS: Must be 21 to rent golf carts.

She learned a ton about horses and her passion continues to grow. Terry, the instructor, was very informative and his knowledge of horses is a true asset to this program, which is a wonderful addition to the immense activities at Hart Ranch.

Last summer, we got to experience the horse camp with our 11-year-old granddaughter. What a privilege it was! Terry was so helpful and a true leader. He made the camp a unique learning experience. His dedication towards the horse and the youth made the two days yearning for more hands learning.

Derek and Douglas loved the program with Terry they loved making projects and working with horses. They are looking forward to next year ... that was easily their favorite part of Hart Ranch.

FAMILY Rec Center The newest addition to Hart Ranch is the Family Rec Center with exciting games and entertainment for the whole family! Enjoy ping pong, pool, air hockey, darts, foosball and numerous other games. Our new theatre features a variety of movies played throughout the day for family entertainment. Sign up for our popular Junior and PeeWee camper programs based out of the Family Rec Center. BLACK HILLS Attractions THE BLACK HILLS When cavalry Colonel George Armstrong Custer first entered the Black Hills in 1874, he found a strikingly beautiful land filled with mountain meadows, granite spires and thick ponderosa forests. Nearly 140 years later, visitors to the Black Hills can still enjoy the same adventure, free roaming wildlife and breathtaking views that so impressed the explorers who came here so long ago.

With two million acres spanning a region of 120 miles long and 60 miles wide, it’s practically an adventure just figuring out where to begin exploring the Black Hills. After all, this region is home to the highest concentration of public parks, monuments, and memorials in the nation.

MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL One of the nation’s most recognizable icons, Mount Rushmore, depicts the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, on the side of a granite mountain. You can walk all the way to the base of the massive memorial on the Presidential Trail, although a stop in the Borglum Museum first is a good way to learn more about the mountain’s symbolism and history.

WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK Guided tours of the sixth-longest cave in the world are the most popular feature of this park north of Hot Springs. In fact, adventurous explorers can sign up for the Wind Caving Tour, a four-hour excursion through the most remote areas of the cavern. Adventures await park visitors above the ground as well, where 28,295 acres of mixedgrass prairie and pine forest support a network of hiking trails and abundant wildlife. Bison, elk, pronghorn antelope, mule deer, coyotes and prairie dogs all inhabit Wind Cave National Park, making it the perfect stop for photographers and nature-lovers.

BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK Almost a quarter million acres of eroded buttes, jagged peaks and sandy plateaus make Badlands National Park one of the most striking landscapes in the world. Sunsets and sunrises are especially beautiful times of the day, casting hues of pink, yellow and orange against the rock walls. Wild bison, coyotes, bighorn sheep and prairie dogs roam freely within the park’s borders.

BLACK HILLS Attractions DEVILS TOWER NATIONAL MONUMENT Rising 1,267 feet straight out of the prairie, Devils Tower is perhaps best known for its role in Steven Spielberg’s movie, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Designated as the nation’s first national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903, Devils Tower is one of the most challenging rock-climbing destinations in the country. A number of less-strenuous hiking trails surround the tower itself, which rests along the red banks of the Belle Fourche River in northeastern Wyoming.

CUSTER STATE PARK This 71,000-acre nature preserve is the home of several camping facilities and rustic lodges, including the state Game Lodge, dubbed the “Summer White House” in 1927 when President Calvin Coolidge spent three months vacationing here with his family. Several lakes and streams provide fantastic fishing, while the 1,500 head of bison that call this place home – one of the largest publicly-owned herds in the world – put on a fantastic show during the annual Buffalo Roundup.

CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL Crazy Horse Memorial® Is located in the heart of the beautiful Black Hills. The elevation on the Mountain is 6,532 feet above sea level and ranks 27th highest mountain in South Dakota. It is made of pegmatite granite and was chosen by Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski & Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear for the Crazy Horse Memorial®.

THE MICKELSON TRAIL Converted from former railroad beds, the 109 miles of the Mickelson Trail bisects the entire length of the Black Hills, connecting Deadwood to Edgemont and passing through many central Black Hills communities along the way. In the summer it’s used for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, and in the winter months it turns into a groomed snowmobile trail. Tunnels, waterfalls, ruined mining buildings and ghost towns are among the many sights of interest along the trail.

BLACK HILLS Attractions DEADWOOD There was a time when it wasn’t safe to walk the boardwalks of the wildest town in the West, but that was a hundred years and a dozen gunfights ago. This is the town that welcomed Wild Bill Hickok, then wept when he was gunned down holding aces and eights, forever after known as the “Deadman’s Hand.” This is the place that witnessed the one-woman cyclone known as Calamity Jane, who claimed she could out-shoot, out-spit and out-swear any man, and usually did.

Today, both are buried side-by-side in Deadwood’s “Boot Hill.” Visitors now encounter brick streets, period lighting, old-time trolleys, Victorian facades and one of the largest historic preservation projects in the world, all fueled by an unlikely benefactor – limited stakes gaming, complete with poker, blackjack and the notorious one-armed bandits.

SPEARFISH CANYON The breathtaking limestone palisades of this creek-carved gorge are more ancient than the Grand Canyon – albeit much closer together. The narrow walls of Spearfish Canyon, which rise up to 1,000 feet above the creek bed, are among the most spectacular scenery in the Black Hills.

Cascading waterfalls quench the thirst of quaking aspen, gnarled oaks, sweet-smelling spruce and the ubiquitous ponderosa pine, which grow right off the edges of rocky precipices. The diverse array of plant life provides a comfortable home for deer, mountain goats, porcupines and bobcats. The canyon was accessible only by horseback until a railroad line to Deadwood was completed in 1893. When a flood in 1933 all but destroyed the tracks, a motorway was built right on top of the old rail bed.

Today, this road is US 14A, one of America’s few scenic byways. The highway continues through the canyon for nearly 20 miles, affording visitors views of both its pristine natural wonders and its historical treasures. Near the middle of the canyon is the old sawmill town of Savoy, which provides a jumping off point for several scenic hikes and forays into ancient mining and logging camps.

Further up the canyon is Cheyenne Crossing, the point where the gold-rush era DeadwoodCheyenne stage line crossed Spearfish Creek.

Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Visitors to the Forest will find over 3,600 miles of roads and trails designated open for motorized travel.

OHV Riding Opportunities - OHV travel is allowed only on designated trails and roads. Over 650 miles of designated motorized trails are available within the Forest. Many of the trails are connected by 500 miles of “Roads Open to All Vehicles,� which together, provide abundant opportunities for planning OHV outings of various degrees of difficulty and lengths, including loop route options.

There are currently 21 designated motorized trailheads on the Forest.

In 10-inch skillet, cook bacon over medium heat about 4 minutes or until cooked but not crisp, turning once. (It will continue to cook in the oven.) Set aside.

2 Spray 6 jumbo muffin cups or 6 (6-oz) glass custard cups with cooking spray. Separate dough into 8 biscuits. Place 1 biscuit in each muffin cup, pressing dough three-fourths of the way up sides of cups. (Bake remaining 2 biscuits on small baking sheet as directed on package.) Place 2 bacon slices in each biscuit cup, and crack an egg over each. Season with salt and pepper. Place a large piece of foil on oven rack below cupcake pans while baking to catch any drips.

3 Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until egg whites are set. Run a small knife around cups to loosen. Serve immediately.

2 Wrap the loaf of bread in parchment paper, then in foil loosely so the bread slices fall slightly open.

3 Sprinkle the diced strawberries over the loaf, taking care to sprinkle some between slices; set aside the sliced strawberries for afterwards.

4 Sprinkle the sliced almonds in the same way as the diced strawberries over the loaf.

5 Whisk eggs, milk, vanilla and cinnamon until frothy. Wrap the foil and parchment paper tighter around the loaf of bread. Pour eggs evenly over the entire loaf of bread before wrapping tightly with a top piece of foil to ensure no leaks.

6 Place over the campfire or grill on low to medium heat for approximately 40 minutes, moving around occasionally to cook evenly. If the bread looks soggy still, cook slightly longer.

7 Remove from heat and let sit for 10 minutes before serving with sugar, syrup and sliced strawberries.

Ingredients: • 3 pounds uncooked bratwurst links • 3 pounds small red potatoes, cut into wedges • 1 pound baby carrots • 1 large red onion, sliced and separated into rings • 2 jars (4-1/2 ounces each) whole mushrooms, drained • 1/4 cup butter, cubed • 1 envelope onion soup mix • 2 tablespoons soy sauce • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Directions: 1 Divide potato wedges among four pieces of heavy-duty foil (about 18 in. square). Top each with a hot dog, onion wedges and cheese. Drizzle with barbecue sauce. Fold foil around mixture, sealing tightly.

2 Grill, covered, over medium heat 10-15 minutes or until heated through. Open foil carefully to allow steam to escape.

Directions: 1 For each of two foil packets, arrange a double thickness of heavy-duty foil (about 17x15 in.) on a flat surface.

2 Cut brats into thirds. Divide the brats, potatoes, carrots, onion and mushrooms evenly between the two double-layer foil pieces. Dot with butter. Sprinkle with soup mix, soy sauce and pepper. Bring edges of foil together; crimp to seal, forming two large packets. Seal tightly; turn to coat.

3 Grill, covered, over medium heat for 23-28 minutes on each side or until vegetables are tender and sausage is no longer pink.

Ingredients: • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut • 3/4 cup chopped pecans • 1 cup butter, softened • 1-1/2 cups packed brown sugar • 1/2 cup sugar • 2 large Eggland’s Best eggs, room temperature • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 2 cups old-fashioned oats • 2 cups (12 ounces) chocolate chips

Directions: 1 Prepare campfire or grill for low heat, using 3240 charcoal briquettes.

2 Line the inside of a 10-in. Dutch oven with heavy-duty foil. In a large bowl, whisk together first 4 ingredients. Add milk and melted butter, stirring just until moistened. Pour into prepared pan.

3 Drain peaches, reserving 1 cup syrup. Arrange peaches over batter; sprinkle with sugar and, if desired, cinnamon. Pour reserved syrup over fruit.

Place lid on Dutch oven.

4 When briquettes are covered with white ash, place Dutch oven directly on half of the briquettes.

Using long-handled tongs, place remaining briquettes on top of pan lid. Cook 30-40 minutes or until cobbler is set and beginning to brown, using tongs to lift lid carefully when checking. If necessary, cook 5 minutes longer. Remove from heat; let stand, uncovered, 15 minutes before serving.

Directions: 1 Place coconut and pecans on a 15x10x1-in. baking pan. Bake at 350° for 6 to 8 minutes or until toasted, stirring every 2 minutes. Set aside to cool.

2 In a large bowl, cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well.

Combine the flour, baking soda and salt Add to creamed mixture; beat well. Stir in the oats, chocolate chips and toasted coconut and pecans.

3 Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 350° about 12 minutes or until browned. Remove to wire racks to cool.

RAINY DAY Camping Activities THE MARSHMALLOW CHALLENGE This one takes a little planning but is oh-so-fun! Gather 20 uncooked sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string, and one marshmallow per team (or person if you don’t have enough people to make a team) and you’re ready to go!

You’ve got 10 minutes to create the tallest free-standing structure possible with only the materials provided. Only catch is the marshmallow has to be on the tippy-top of your structure. Whoever has the tallest structure after the 10 minutes are up is the winner.

We promise it’s way more frustrating than it sounds!

INDOOR S’MORES Need a use for that leftover marshmallow? Throw it on a roasting stick and make some indoor s’mores! For the easiest set-up, turn the stove in your RV on and roast until golden brown (or burnt to a crisp, we’re not here to judge). Stack like you would an ordinary s’more and enjoy!

WATER BOTTLE BOWLING Bring the bowling alley to you with Water Bottle Bowling! Make the pins by filling up 6-10 plastic water bottles about ¼ full of water, be sure to put the caps back on tight! Find a tennis ball, lacrosse ball, or whatever you have handy and start bowling strikes!

MUG GOLF Does your short game need some work? We’ve got the solution for you!

Break out an old coffee mug, your lucky golf ball and your putter and play a round of mug golf. Tip your mug on its side with the open end facing you and line up your shot from anywhere. If you want to add some competition to the mix play a game of “HORSE” as well!

FORTUNATELY / UNFORTUNATELY Work on your story telling skills with this fun game! All participants sit in a circle and the leader starts the story with a sentence beginning with the word, “fortunately.” The next person continues the story with a sentence beginning with the word “unfortunately.” The pattern continues through the entire circle.

The goal is to create a story that makes sense and can be ended by the last person in the circle.

HEAD TO THE FAMILY REC CENTER At Hart Ranch we know rainy days happen and we want to keep the good times rolling! So when the rain starts to fall head to the Family Rec Center where many fun rainy day activities can be found. Pool tables, board games, Xbox, and much more can be found in the Family Rec Center to help pass a rainy day away!

Troubleshooting Steps Step 1: Check settings & restart • Make sure Wi-Fi is Enabled. Then turn it off and on again to reconnect.

• Make sure Airplane mode is off. Then turn it on and off again to reconnect.

• Reboot your device and try again.

Step 2: Find the problem type • Device - Try connecting to the Wi-Fi network with another device, like a laptop computer or friend’s phone. If other devices can use the network, the problem is most likely with your device.

• Network- Check whether your device can connect to the free Wi-Fi network. If your device can connect elsewhere, the problem is most likely with the network.

• Internet - If your device connects to the Wi-Fi network but you still have no internet, the problem is most likely with your internet connection. Call Vast Broadband at 855-740-8152 and tell them you are a guest at the Hart Ranch and would like support with your managed wireless connection and the account # is 16549601.

Note: You are not able to directly connect a smart TV to this Wi-Fi network, you will have to connect a streaming device that supports a web browser.
