2019 ALL ABILITY

ARTS PROGRAMS

In the pages that follow, discover how the people of Black Hills Works are leading lives of purpose through artistic expression, and make plans to join us for one (or all!) of our special events in 2019.

At Black Hills Works we strive to give people with disabilities a life of purpose and possibilities. A place where they have a voice – a place where that voice is heard. Our arts expression programs provide a supportive environment where the over 630 people we serve can be themselves. Where people can look past someone’s disability and see who they are – an artist – a performer – a person. Through the Suzie Cappa Art Center & Gallery and Flutter Productions you’ll see the personalities of the people we support come to life. You’ll see it in every movement they make on stage, every sketch of the pencil or stroke of a brush on a canvas – you’ll see them – and that’s something that I invite you to experience with me. But what excites me the most about our arts programs is not just what these programs do for the people we serve, but what they also do for our Black Hills community. It allows all people – disability or not – to come together, express themselves and be heard. Throughout the year, you’ll discover a plethora of opportunities to engage with the people we support – and the arts – in our gallery at the Suzie Cappa Art Center or through a production by Flutter Productions. I look forward to being surprised, yet again, by the beautiful work they bring to our community. Join me!

SUZIE CAPPA ART CENTER & GALLERY

We believe in, and constantly encourage artistic freedom and independence.

Last summer, Flutter Productions produced a stunning performance, ZENITH, at the Rapid City Performing Arts Center. This two night performance took audiences on a journey to unknown worlds where constellations revealed stories as old as time, and direction that can only be found in the stars.

The performing arts entity produces original, world premiere, full-production works for the stage, based in theater and contemporary dance. Flutter Productions was originally founded in 2008 with the presentation of Flutter, produced by Black Hills Community Theatre and Suzie Cappa Art Center & Gallery. It was formally established in 2010, and found a home at Black Hills Works in 2015. Since its founding, nearly 775 all-ability performers have found a voice and outlet for expression through Flutter Productions.

Support for Flutter Productions comes from a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the Human Endeavor. Support is also provided by the Wilfred & Margaret Memorial Trust and
