From the editor: You are holding the big number TEN! And I would be lying if I said there weren’t some tears shed along the way to get here. But, through it all, my loyal and creative advertisers have given this publication reason to continue on.

One of my favorite things about this issue is the amount of new entrepreneurs who are featured in these pages - young and excited individuals who have a passion for agriculture and the livestock industry. My kind of people.

Below are my words of advice for new entrepreneurs (some are inherited from what mentors once told me, some I have learned the hard way, over and over again.)

1.

Step out of your comfort zone. I mean really push yourself. When I took over Midwest Herdsman, I had a lot of people-learning to do. I was fresh out of college and needed to learn the faces of the industry and their operations. I forced myself to shake five new hands at each event/show I went to - while sometimes painful, it was well worth it.

2.

Be creative in your pursuit. Find things to make you stand out to your customers aside from your product. Maybe they will remember you for your creative marketing, your willingness to help at events or the extra special customer service touch that you provide with your product or service. It is important to stand out from the crowd.

3.

Just keep going. When things are hard and it seems like you are not making any progress, be vigilant in your efforts and keep going. I promise just when you are about to break, things always start to turn around.

As always, THANK YOU to those whose support never wavers. It is truly a dream to be able to work with clients like you and for that I am forever grateful.

Managing the Postpartum Cow

by SVS Repro Whether you are looking to move a cow up a month or you’re planning to get a flush in before breeding back your donor, postpartum management is critical for success. A number of nutritional supplements are marketed by your local feed mill to help support a fresh cow over this period, but basic husbandry strategies are the key to getting your cow prepared for success.

Nutrition Feed is the most important factor in livestock management. Not only is it the greatest expense, it plays the largest role in the health and performance of your herd. Quality, quantity and consistency of a ration are paramount. When balanced appropriately, both TMR or component feeding practices can be successful in delivering the energy, fiber and nutrients necessary to meet the demands of a lactating beef cow. It takes surplus energy along with ample mineral supplementation to help transition that postpartum cow to a cycling, reproductively sound donor cow. Clean, mycotoxin-free feedstuffs are important when we are looking to maximize reproductive performance.

Exposure to moderate levels of mycotoxins without the utilization of an effective binder may affect oocyte quality and breeding success for up to 60 days beyond the time of consumption.

Health Postpartum health is often dictated by the management of the cow for the weeks prior to calving. Ration consistency, stress prevention and a traumatic parturition limit immune suppression and susceptibility to disease. Selenium supplementation for those areas that are selenium deficient should be considered. There are a number of ways to supplement Selenium including injectable products and mineral feed additives.

A complete vaccination strategy specific to your herd’s disease pressure is critical to maintain cow health. At a minimum, utilizing a 7-way clostridium vaccine and a 5/9 way viral (including BVDv)

are critical. Vaccination 4 weeks after calving and 4 weeks prior to breeding is a great time to provide early gestational cow immunity. Further vaccines may be used to address your individual herd threats. Please consult your herd veterinarian to find the most appropriate vaccination recommendations.

Cyclicity The observation of estrus early postpartum is usually a sign of good reproductive health. To promote reproductive health, prostaglandins can be given every two weeks beginning 14 days after calving. This helps clean out the uterus prior to breeding. When estrus has not been observed by 45 days postpartum, a reproductive exam should be performed. If a veterinarian isn’t an option, an alternative would be to synchronize estrus with a 7-day CIDR synch protocol. This can be done to achieve a marker heat for a conventional flush protocol or establish cyclicity prior to insemination.

Pushing reproductive performance in a fresh cow needs to be done with intention. Though there are many supplements that can be used to help prepare a fresh cow for early lactation and reproductive success, basic cattle management is critical. Implementing an effective vaccination strategy, feeding plenty of clean, high-quality forage, limiting stress and monitoring for cyclicity are keys to success. And a healthy cow produces quality oocytes that lead to high quality embryos, pregnancies and live calves.

INDUSTRY INTERVIEW: WHAT ROLE DO YOU PLAY IN THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY?

Butts Farms is a family run operation of a 40 sow showpig operation consisting of Durocs, Yorks, Hamps, Spots, Berks and Crosses. Our main focus is selling showpigs to kids in the Midwest and Southwest. Our role within the industry is to make competitive livestock for kids to be successful with no matter what their goal at the show they chose to go to.

We are always looking to make our herd better and selecting females to keep back to continue to move forward within the showpig industry.

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF THE SWINE INDUSTRY GOING? Throughout my years I have seen the swine industry evolve in many different ways. There are so many different paths you can take in the industry. To me it is important to go find the niche market within the swine industry that works best for your family and what you want to accomplish. It might be in the commercial side, feed and nutrition side or showpig side.

When you find the path that works for your family and your lifestyle you will also find many different paths within your chosen path.

WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER “YOUR KIND OF LIVESTOCK?” Build and look. I’ve always been a build guy. The proper kind of build never goes out of style. You can make any kind of livestock relevant and competitive if it is built right.

WHO IS SOMEONE YOU HAVE LOOKED UP TO IN THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY AND WHY?

Al Christian is probably one of the most influential people in the swine industry for both commercial and showpig industry. He touched so many lives while at Iowa State. His ability to teach you, listen to you, and motivate you all in the same conversation is second to none. He always took the time and went out of his way to make you feel important or special. In my opinion, he will forever be the greatest in the industry because of all of those qualities.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE NATIONAL SHOW? The National Barrow Show in Austin MN. That was/is the world series of shows. The history is second to none. The nostalgia that comes with being at that show is like no other. We always seem to have a great show in Austin and bring home the most accolades from that show over the years.
