LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Did you expect to find the Midwest Beef Producer magazine in the mail today? Well, surprise! We’ve been making some changes around here. Welcome to our next level... American Beef Producer magazine. All of us here at Marcomm Publishing feel so fortunate to still be doing what we love. That inspiration has kept us working hard to present our new magazine to you in the most challenging year that anyone can remember. Covid19, Brexit, wildfires, impeachment, quarantine, killer bees, protests, locusts…the list goes on and that’s just the big stuff. But, there has been good too. More family time, more personal time, more outside time. Personally, I’m now a better cook, I’m more creative. I’ve made new friends and renewed old friendships. I’ve created stronger bonds with our neighbors.

I’ve taken online classes, read a ton more books and our two Australian Shepherds can’t deny they aren’t getting enough attention these days. We’re busier than ever and we’re ok. Ranchers I’ve talked to are finishing those neverending projects, they’re organizing their barns and fine tuning their cattle plans. Some are fixing those old tractors and balers. Helping neighbors has become more common. Their time on the farm is so much more appreciated. The world is in turmoil but the common theme amongst most of us is positivity and good health. My Dad’s health had been southwards for a few years until his death in January. Even with a broken back, diabetes, and heart disease, he ran this magazine until his heart stopped. For over 25 years he kept the publication running with strong yearly growth in subscriptions and content.

People would often ask him why he didn’t take the magazine national and his answer would always be “keeping it simple.” But, he could see the magazine was outgrowing its regional reputation the last few years. Now we are a National Publication with over 18,000 subscribers and growing. One of our main goals is to put our collective heads together nationwide for what’s new and innovative in the ranching and agricultural circles. Ag communities have been asking us this for years. With that, our national presence is already proving its weight and with great feedback from everyone. We want to hear from YOU. What’s on your mind? What questions do you have that we can get answers to? What works for you? This magazine is simply for all of you. So, with humble gratitude and happiness in our hearts, thank you for being with us the last 25 years. We look forward to next 25. When you have a moment, drop me an email to share your thoughts. Thank you.

Sondra West Moore and Zephyr‘s Arrow

Walk Softly and Consider the Texas Longhorn written by Valerie Laughton, Staff Writer/Producer Valerie@ABPmag.com Westhaven Texas Longhorn Ranch, Ione, CA - Driving over California foothills you drop down into a lush green valley lined with walnut trees on one side and a creek bed in the distance. The fields are dotted with strikingly colored cows, heifers and bulls with their signature crown of horns reaching up to 90 inches and beyond. The Texas Longhorn has had a home on this ranch for over 45 years. It is their haven curated by Colonel Fraser West and now by his daughter 8

Sondra West-Moore. Sondra has an easy way with her herd, walking the pastures daily to check on and hang out with the animals, socializing them so people are able to handle the cattle. She carries her walking stick to “horn communicate” with them in a language they understand. She shows us how when a bull gets a little too close, the cane is like a horn…coming up and showing him go that way or don’t do this. The cows, calves and bulls‘ American Beef Producer

Photos by Derek Sample interest in their new visitors had us mesmerized. A longhorn looks at you and you can see them size you up and seem to process - “What you are doing in my field?” – in their mind. These striking cattle are quite the livestock to behold. Their heads held high, alert and inquisitive, with expansive horns giving way to smaller shoulders and smooth skin sloping up their strong backs to high well defined hips. These are not the wiry animals you see at rodeos. They are September 2020

robust and beautiful creatures. But lets get to the why and how of this ranch. As we walk the pasture meeting the longhorns, Sondra WestMoore recounts her first memory of a round-up. It was time for shots and branding. She was five and her dad saddled her up on a big horse in front of an open gate amid a swirling herd of 200 longhorn cattle and said, “don’t let anything through this gate”! That was her foray to the love of ranching, given to her by her dad. Her dad was something else. Fraser West turned down West Point to instead study agriculture at the University of Nevada, majoring in, at that time, Animal Husbandry. In 1939 Fraser was a member of the University of Nevada’s First Place US Championship Ski Team. He competed in downhill, slalom, cross-country and ski jumping. His expertise in skiing led him to being a judge and official at five Winter Olympic Games. He was also instrumental in helping to develop the Boreal Ridge ski resort and he introduced the first night skiing in the area because he liked skiing in the dark. September 2020

He was also a longtime member of the U.S. Ski Association and the International Ski Federation and a recipient of the Hans Georg Award for his positive impact on the sport of skiing. In 1994 he received the USSA’s highest honor, the Julius Blegen Award for prolonged and outstanding service to the sport. Fraser West enlisted in the Marines Crops in 1940 as the first Nevadan in the 1st Marine Officer Candidate Class. As a World War II veteran of Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Guam he was awarded the Silver Star medal for valor and the Purple Heart. During his service overseas in China he began to dream about owning his own ranch in his adoring letters to his wife Teddy, Sondra’s mother. Fraser and Teddy met when she was 4 and he was 12 and he bought his first two horses, one named Happy Days, from Teddy’s mother for $25. He was already competing in rodeos and roping competitions from the age of 12 through 92 and was a Worldwide Military Team Roping Champion more than once. Shoddy design of the arenas irritated him so he designed and built five American Beef Producer

rodeo arenas, including the first ever in Hawaii. Through his years of service in the Marine Corps, Sondra’s mother managed moving the family of six from city to city from tiny apartments to Quonset huts, base housing, tight (for a family of six) tiny houses to small ranches. One day Fraser met with a man about selling one of his custom horse trailers. He designed and manufactured the trailers himself because he wanted something much more sturdy in which to transport his horses and cattle. The man told him about a ranch he had for sale. He took a look at it the next day and knew it was the dream ranch he always wanted. He drove Teddy up to the ranch to see what she thought.

Colonel Fraser West at 90, on the ranch

After walking the ranch Teddy told her husband that she needed to pray on it. The next day Teddy told him, yes, and Westhaven, in Ione, California was thus sold on a handshake and cash. The rest is history…happily living and growing the ranch together until his passing in 2015. As with everything he approached in life he always strived to make whatever he was making 9

or doing better. Since 1973 Colonel Fraser West raised Registered Texas Longhorns and continuously worked for the preservation and improvement of this hearty breed. To him, breeding cattle with Longhorns makes your herd healthier. Westhaven Ranch was known for its Grand Champions and ranchers from all over had come to make them part of their herd. Ranchers learned that Colonel Fraser West was right, introducing Longhorns to their herd made their cattle better. When her dad passed in 2015, Sondra told her husband, John Edward Moore, that she had acquired textbooks full of knowledge about Longhorns from working the ranch, taught to her by her dad in addition to her years of 4H showing animals and winning the Round Robin at 13 and a half years old. Sondra thought it was important to pass on her knowledge of Longhorns to others. John loved the idea of working around the ranch. So in 2015, they moved back to the ranch to care for her mother, brother and of course the Longhorns. Her dad had quietly sold Longhorns to Angus and Hereford breeders for years to help them make their herds more disease resistant and heartier. Sondra feels that some new ranchers have Horseshoe J Fascinate & Winning Peacemaker Gold (1 day old)

have forgotten or do not know the contribution Longhorns will make to their herds. Longhorn cattle date back about 10,000 years ago to East Africa, part of the bloodline migrated to India and some into Spain, which are related to fighting cattle from Spain. Longhorns are descendants of African animals, which is why they can withstand the heat and snow and they forage on foliage that other cattle will not eat. They also have immunity to all sorts of diseases. These animals are highly evolved. As we walk the pasture we come upon a day old calf and her protective mom. Sondra tells us how Longhorns are very protective of their calves making them great moms. Longhorns also have smaller heads and shoulders making a first time calving experience better for the cow and reducing the mortality rate. Having a good first experience makes future births easier. Sondra tells us, “The thing about longhorns is a few years ago real cattlemen in the United States American Beef Producer

would quietly breed their first time heifers to Longhorns because they knew if the cow had a good experience on her first calf she’s going to be a much better cow over the life of the cow. They would put Longhorn genetics into their herd and that has gone out of fashion and it’s a disaster as far as I’m concerned, because this breed is impervious to ticks, does not get pink eye and is much more resistant to all kinds of things.” Sondra wants to make what was old new again. “I really hope that the genetics of this survival breed will get back into the commercial herd because it will help. Plus their big hips give them more room in the birthing canal.” Walking through the pasture Sondra points out, “this cow is from the El Coyote Ranch in Texas…this is from the Allen’s Ranch… this one’s grandfather was Peacemaker, one of the most famous bulls… “I buy cattle from all over the place because I want to improve the bloodline. Here is Jamaka, she’s from artificial insemination from a very famous bull, Jamakizm. You cannot buy JamSeptember 2020

akizm’s daughters because they are so rare.” We turn and the herd has followed us, curious as to what we are doing and seem to be posing for pictures. Sondra exclaims, “look at the udder on her and people say Longhorns don’t produce milk!” We learn that the swirl above the eyes on a cow’s head shows intelligence, a female’s curly tail is a sign of reproductive health and that the circumference of the bull’s scrotum is very important as it exhibits their fertility. She says that she allows the cows to calve in the same pasture as the bull because it makes a better bull by developing his gentle, paternal side. Sondra West-Moore also informs us that 61% of the new ranchers are not from ranching families, they are just people that

decided to ranch because it was a dream of theirs. Longhorns are easier cattle. You don’t have to vaccinate because they have more natural resistance, but because she sells across state lines she vaccinates for everything. “I don’t believe in not vaccinating because I saw a steer die of Tetanus and it is a terrible death.” Longhorn genetics are an asset because of their longevity, resistance to disease, fertility, ease of calving and the ability to thrive on marginal pasture. They use their horns to forage not just for protection. Sondra gestures to the trees on the far side of the pasture showing how they are trimmed at eight feet up due to the Longhorns standing on their hind feet and knocking down limbs and leaves to eat. They eat plants other cattle won’t touch.

She points out thistles in the pasture that are full of nutrients and tells us that when they start to wilt and die the Longhorn will eat it, in addition to whole heads of artichoke and starthistle. They ignore poisonous mushrooms but will clear out poison oak. Longhorns will clean up a horrible field and make it a healthy, arable land, transforming it into a thick green pasture. The Texas Longhorn Association of America (TLBAA) also has an F1 program for crossbreeding Registered Longhorn into their cattle. It’s another way for new and seasoned ranchers to quietly introduced Longhorn genetics into their herds. Recently, she had calls from cattlemen extremely frustrated with the look of their Angus. These

were big time ranchers that did not like the look of their cattle at the spring gathering and wanted a large amount of F1’s. Sondra suggested that he introduce some Longhorns to his herd. She tells us how the old timers used to constantly introduce Longhorn heifers quietly to their herds knowing how advantageous they were to the health of the herd. She wants ranchers to understand that you may quietly introduce red and black heifers to the herd to make a stronger animal. Sondra finds one of her steers, Captain to be quite interesting. He lets her know when heifers are in heat. She said that he brings a heifer up to the fence line near a bull and then stands at the fence line until the bull takes over. Then, it’s as if Captain acts like, “okay you got it from here” and off he goes. Then she shows us her prize bull, Gold Run, named after the first Ski Resort in California. He’s on day 2 of courting a cow named Donna. Sondra says it is always a four-day courtship. Day 1 they graze next to each other, Day 2 they wink at each other and by Day 4, success. You can always tell what day it is by the way the bull is behaving. Gold Run’s great color, markings and absolutely fantastic horns have earned him the TLBAA Showcase Championship 12

3 times over, winning all three categories in his class at just 16 months. He is now 27 months and will pass 80” tip to tip before he is 30 months old. He is considered the best son of Gold Mine who is one of the most famous bulls and a regular trophy winner himself. After showing us a bull that won best in class she told us how she was flabbergasted by the win. Her husband who helped her so much on the ranch died a month before the event and she didn’t expect to win anything. “After his death, this ranch saved me. Walking with the herd and taking care of the animals, I don’t know, they are special. I grew up with them and my dad loved them. There’s something about Longhorns that I’m addicted.” “I want people to understand if they buy high quality Registered Longhorns and breed them into their commercial herd they’re going to do nothing but win all the way around. You’re going to spend less money feeding them because they forage better, you’re going to fight off disease better, and you are going to have longer lives and a

American Beef Producer

much longer reproductive life. A commercial cow is done at 12 or 13, right? These cows are done at 20 or 25…if you let them.” She goes on to say how people can’t believe how big her bulls are - that they are enormous. “I want people to know that you can raise just as big cattle on grass. A Longhorn steer will take 2 months longer to fatten than a pure Angus that goes to a Stockyard. However, it costs less because of their natural ability to forage.” We asked Sondra how she felt about the effect of Covid 19 on the beef production market. She told us that Slaughterhouses wouldn’t take Longhorns because their horns will not fit in the chutes, complicate that with Covid 19’s affect on the shut downs of slaughterhouses all over the country. Sondra believes that USDA approved mobile slaughterhouses are going to become the wave of the future and much more common due to Covid 19. This enables Longhorns to be sold for beef consumption more than in the past, resulting in an increasing demand for their meat.

September 2020

Sondra says, “Consider the longrun trend, what’s old is new again… they (the Longhorn) have been here thousands of years. Genetically, they’re fascinating because they are one of the few species on the face of the earth that have been domesticated and gone feral several times so they have immunity to all kinds of disease. This is why we need to rebreed them back into commercial herds to make the commercial cattle healthier. That is why I breed Longhorns. Quietly breed them into your herd for a tougher, more disease resistant herd. That‘s my message…consider the Longhorn.” As we drive away from Westhaven Ranch, we realize that just as he had done with everything in life, Colonel Fraser West, always worked hard to improve on any endeavor he undertook. He brought up his daughter to be just like him. Sondra West-Moore strives to improve on all her endeavors. We are pretty certain that her dad and husband are watching over the ranch, proud of her achievements. We leave Westhaven Ranch agreeing with Sondra, that you should definitely…consider the Longhorn. “PROGRAM“

ISN’T JUST A WORD IT’S A COMPLETE PACKAGE By Lorenzo Lasater President of the Isa Beefmasters

Many producers casually label their cattle operation a “program,” and it is such a deceptively simple word to throw around. However, years of focused work and research go into a true seedstock program and this diligence defines the genetic value of the bulls you buy. If your provider is not pushing the performance limits of their herd, they are not upholding their end of the bargain. At Isa Beefmasters, we strive to push the performance envelope in every available manner. This may range from the time-tested practices as simple as weaning weights, to a much deeper dive into the latest technologies. We have always wondered how people could be in the genetics business if they don’t even take the most basic step of weighing their calves at weaning. To me, part of

September 2020

the fun of registered cattle is the ability to measure, benchmark and improve. By the time an Isa Beefmasters bull sells, he has been measured for 11 different data points. Together, this information tells us a great deal about his genetic potential and allows buyers to make highly informed selections. As BBU strives to add cow efficiency and fertility EPDs, we have responded by collecting cow weights at weaning and pregnancy check, which tell us a great deal about her productive efficiency.

Herd Fertility The fertility built into a herd is of

American Beef Producer

paramount importance in selecting the genetics to improve your herd. Does your provider employ a defined breeding season of 90 days or less? At Isa Beefmasters, we use a 60day breeding season on both our fall and spring-calving herds. We breed the heifers at 14 months old to calve on their second birthday, and then we require them to breed and wean a calf every year throughout their lifetime. Any cow that fails to do so is culled. Another area we emphasize in herdsire selection is the age of the dam: Bulls out of first-calf heifers or an older cow that has never missed pack a significant genetic punch. If your current provider is cutting corners—calving year-round, letting cows miss or holding heifers to breed later—think carefully about their commitment to herd fertility.

17

Adaptability Two geographic halves basically divide the U.S. cattle industry: farmer-feeders in the northern states and grassranchers in the southern states. While there is nothing wrong with either group, they clearly require different genetics for production success. At Isa Beefmasters, we run our herd outside, on grass, year-round, with minimal supplement—just as you probably do. We raise calves without creep feed so weaning weights are a true measure of a cow’s performance. The cow’s unique ability to convert grass to protein is what makes her the superstar of food production. As grassranchers, we must identify the genetics that can convert most effectively. Though Beefmasters are thought of as heat-tolerant cattle—and they truly excel in harsh, hot conditions—they are actually very adaptable cattle. Our home base, San Angelo, Texas, is

18

characterized by a dry climate, with extremely hot summers and fairly cold winters. Cows must be able to tolerate 110-degree summer days but also the occasional snow or ice storm with wind chills in the single digits Fahrenheit. We have a lot of success selling genetics throughout the tropical regions of the world because our cattle adapt so easily, but the nice little surprise is how well they also do in cold climates, such as our northern states. Health is another critical component of adaptability. Healthiness can take many forms such as insect resistance, respiratory health and resistance to infirmities such as pinkeye and foot rot. Ask anyone who has run both Beefmasters and other breeds, and they’ll tell you Beefmasters are exceptionally healthy cattle. Their hardiness extends from the ranch to the beef chain, where the feeder calves enjoy exceptional health, a primary driver in profitability. I

American Beef Producer

attribute this to more than 80 years of selection using the Six Essentials, which pinpoints hardier, healthier genetics.

Performance Evaluation The bulls we sell undergo a unique, yearlong performance test. Our test is comprised of two gain test phases: one on grass and one on feed. These phases mimic the production cycle of a feeder calf and demonstrates a bull’s genetics for growth in each phase. Many competing breeds are put on feed at weaning untilthey are sold. This “help” does a disserviceboth to the bull and to the buyer, masking the bull’s true capabilities.

September 2020

We do a yearling carcass sonogram on every animal we raise and have since the technology became available many years ago. This technology allows us to measure intramuscular fat (IMF), or marbling, and ribeye area (REA), or muscling, enabling us to select individuals that excel in these important drivers of carcass value. Isa Beefmasters recently put two sets of heifers through the Growsafe Feed Efficiency Test, which measures individual feed intake to give an indicator of feed efficiency, or conversion. I always knew in my heart that our Beefmasters were efficient cattle, but I think the results from the Genetic Development Center in Navasota, Texas, speak for themselves, with one of our heifers earning the #1 Feed Efficiency Index out of 335 head and 17 breeds. Isa Beefmasters also placed four of the top 10 individuals in the

September 2020

test for Efficiency Index and six of the top 11 for Residual Feed Intake (RFI). To have outperformed so many cattle in so many competing breeds is a wonderful validation of our cattle selection efforts over the past 80-plus years. Another facet of performance evaluation is DNA technology, which we have used for many years for sire identification, allowing us to breed in multiple-sire herds and still maintain accurate pedigrees. This multi-sire approach ensures accuracy when selecting for bull libido and their ability to breed in competition with other bulls, which is pretty unique among registered programs. DNA technology today has advanced to the point that we now have Genomic Enhanced EPDs. This new specificity layers DNA markers for various traits over the traditional phenotypic measurements, giving us greatly increased EPD accuracies

American Beef Producer

in young cattle with no progeny. Genomic Enhanced EPDs ensure much greater predictability when selecting bulls to improve your herd genetically. In addition, the current DNA allows us to parent-verify both sire and dam, giving you total confidence in the pedigrees you are selecting. We are currently participating in several ongoing carcass progeny tests, validating our top sire lines’ strengths in gains, grade, yield and hardiness. Watch for these results to be published soon! As you can see, there is a great deal that goes into a “program, and we constantly work to stay ahead of changes and innovations in the beef industry. We strive to test all our cattle for genetic value using every available technology, ensuring your investment in Isa Beefmaster genetics moves the needle in a positive direction for your herd.

“We built our new ABS Global Calf Facility in the summer of 2016. This was the first time we utilized anything except steel at one of our facilities and it was a hard sell to the staff. However, after meeting with Travis at TJ’s Fencing in Harpers Ferry, and having him bring a gate home to show the staff, we were sold. We utilize more than 200 different sizes of gates, all purchased from TJ’s Fencing and installed by Cliff ’s Incorporated from Friesland, WI. The gating is holding up very well. We intend to expand our calf facility this summer and will definitely continue utilizing TJ’s Fencing for the gating.” - Jim Meronek, Health Assurance, Production and Supply Chain Director ABS Global, Inc DeForest, WI

PASTURE(S) OF DREAMS By Tim McCray & Jordan Zemke - Photos by Jordan Zemke

Wild ideas sometimes actually work out. Ask Ray about his baseball diamond in the middle of his corn field.

a passion for cattle and genetics. As a kid he would look through the semen catalogs, that led him to his first look at a Beefmaster bull. This catalog had one Beefmaster bull in it, and Jordan lived with that image in his head for many years before the Beefmaster journey would actually begin.

Jordan Zemke grew up on a dairy farm near Goodhue, MN. His parents Jerry & Linda owned 20 cows on the dairy farm owned by Jerry’s parents, who had a little over fifty of their own. Jerry also worked driving a truck for a local garbage business. Jordan always had

Jerry Zemke was used to working quite long hours at this point. Between milking cows on his dairy farm, and hauling garbage during the day to make ends meet for his growing family. In 2005 the company he had been working at sold out to a larger firm, and he

was asked to work for another outfit dropping roll off containers. Not a big change, but a change nonetheless. That decision turned out to be a blessing in disguise. In another 7 years Jerry was faced with another proposition: Starting his own roll off delivery company. A life changing decision during his late 40’s – when most people have landed in their retirement job. It wasn’t too long after this that in 2000 another decision was made to sell off the dairy herd, and start a commercial beef herd. Jordan, (now in his 20’s) started using Genex AI sires. There he found a selection September 2020

of Beefmaster bulls in their added attraction section. Remembering that bull from his younger days, he started doing some research on the breed and decided to try his luck AI’ing a few cows. “We really loved the breeds history and being developed around the 6 essentials of profitability – conformation, disposition, fertility, hardiness, milking ability and weight.” The first Beefmaster sired calf arrived in the spring of 2013 and a second the following spring. Both calves were the highest and most impressive in their respective year’s calf crop. Those two calves really had grabbed their attention. In the late winter of 2014, they stumbled across an episode of The American Rancher that was about to start.” That episode was what really got our wheels turning. Shortly after that episode we reached out to a Beefmaster breeder looking for a bull and maybe a few females. He told us of an upcoming sale at the McAlester Union Stockyards that was going to be coming up and highly recommended it.”

Meet the Zemke‘s: Jaycie, Jordan, Bri, Linda, Jerry & Finlee

The crazy idea here is that the Beefmaster bulls started in Texas and no one in Minnesota had any kind of registered herd. Being the first to try something is always unnerving. “The success of Zemke roll off service really allowed us to invest in the cattle from the beginning.” Remarks Jerry. We bought a bull, a bred heifer, and an open heifer at that first sale. The following year they returned and bought 5 open heifers and a bred heifer. It has been full speed ahead September 2020

ever since.

Today Zemke Farms Beefmasters has 53 registered purebreds in their herd, spread over 3 pastures. Jerry & Jordan expressed “The cattle work for us, we don’t work for them” as we approach the first pasture on a hot day in August. Beefmaster cattle have been bred to be self-sufficient. “We check on them about once or twice a week” something that didn’t dawn on me until after I found myself standing amidst the herd. The cattle came to us, and they weren’t expecting to be fed. They were just curious, and incredibly calm for being around a stranger. But then again, with Jerry & Jordan only “visiting” on weekends – they too are strangers.

September 2020

Jordan is optimistic and humble about the future of Zemke farms Beefmasters. “When we started, we were a big believer in what the cattle could do and the momentum the breed itself was building. We aspire to be the only Beefmaster breeders in the state with a head start on what we think are exceptional cattle with a bright future in the cattle business. “We really felt it could work by using the right kind of Beefmasters for our environment. So far it has been more than satisfactory.” The Beefmaster breed is diverse and can adapt to various conditions as any breed you’ll find. We look forward to educating people on not only our program, but the breed itself. We would also like to continue building on the momentum we have been gaining. We currently have semen available on one of our bulls and would like to increase our semen offering. Probably the most important thing, God willing, is that I would love to see my kids get involved and grow a passion for cattle and agriculture.” Zemke Farms welcomes visitors, and they can be reached via their Facebook page – Zemke Farms Beefmasters. So in the end, no voices in the corn – but perhaps, by breeding them – others will follow.
