A P SPONSORED EVENTS

by Derek Sample Derek@ABPmag.com As I‘m driving to the Milwaukee Beef Expo early Saturday morning, I‘m reminded of the many times I hitched a ride with my Father to see shows like this a long time ago. I didn‘t grow up on a farm, instead I grew up on multiple farms since my Dad was “always an Ag Journalist in motion”. As a kid I was his sidekick visiting farms and ranches all over this great country. This morning, when I arrived at the Expo, all of those memories were back and as fresh as yesterday. Shows like this were always important even as an adult since my Dad had showed cattle as a kid all over the midwest. Then he would be going to even more events with his own Dad since his father was best friends with the Secretary of Agriculture and he also served as Head of the Farm Bureau for years plus so many other official titles in the midwestern agricultural community which kept them both very busy. As I walked through the crowd and cattle with my camera I wondered what it would have been like to be here as a kid like these that are here today. There‘s bright smiles on some faces and disappoinment on others. Parents in the background lending their hand and more for support that their loved ones might not appreciate that day. Their advice of course would be - to remember there‘s always a next time. We were a proud Sponsor of this year‘s 28th World Beef Expo. Considering the pandemic along with the rest of the world‘s events, I‘d say the turnout was great. 1,400 entries from over 26 states plus over 30 breeds of cattle! I wasn‘t able to attend on ther other days, but I heard the showings were great. Lots of talented people and cattle out there! Thanks for making my day. :) ABP 10

Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance: A new perspective to Cattle Production by Luis Fernando SchĂźtz, PhD lschutz@unr.edu The challenge of obtaining one calf per cow each year is of great importance to the cowcalf segment. Several aspects are known to influence the pregnancy and calving rates of a beef cattle herd, including the fertility and breeding capacity, health, nutritional status, and genetics of the animals. However, recent research advances are unveiling a new factor to cattle reproduction based on the topic called transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. It is well known that the phenotype of an individual, which is the observable characteristics of that individual, is regulated by an interaction between the information carried out in the genome and the environment. Indeed, the term epigenetics refers to inheritable changes in the expression of genes without changes to the genome and these changes are responsive to the environment. This concept about the importance of genetics and the management to the performance of animals is not new to cattle producers. What new research is showing is that the environment and management not only affect the individual, but they also affect its future progeny in a way that seems much more impactful than 14

we used to know. This is what transgenerational epigenetic inheritance is about, it refers to the inheritance of epigenetic modifications between generations. Not long ago, we believed that the experiences of animals and changes to their phenotypes during their lives would not affect the genome and, therefore, would not impact the next generation. Several recent studies, however, show that experiences throughout the life of an individual can have effects that lasts for several generations of descendants even without altering the genome. In fact, for epigenetic alterations to be characterized as transgenerational epigenetics, they need to last for at least two generations of descendants if the epigenetic alterations affected males and non-pregnant females or three generations of descendants in the case of epigenetic alterations that occurred in pregnant females. This indicates that the management of bulls and dams today may have effects to the performance of several future generations in the ranch. There has been a plethora of studies investigating transgenerational epigenetic inheritance in mammals, especially rodents and humans. These studies have American Beef Producer

shown that stress, pollutants, nutrition, and lifestyle of males and females during the pre-conception period or of females during pregnancy can have long-lasting effects on the health of future generations. Studies involving cattle are still less numerous, but important findings have been published in the recent years and the tendency is that we find more about how the environment can play a role in cattle performance in the near future. The possibility that the performance of the progeny of cattle can be affected by the way we manage cows in the breeding season and during pregnancy is getting the attention of researchers. For example, a recent study has shown that heat stress in late gestation of cows reduces the milk production and productive life of daughters and milk production of granddaughters, confirming effects of the environment in the performance of immediate next generations and opening the possibility for last-longing transgenerational effects in productive performance of cattle in response to the management and the environment (1). Indeed, a correlation between regulation of milk production of dairy cows and epigenetics November 2020

has been established and confirms a potential for the impact of epigenetics to milk production of cattle (2). Another study has reported that the oocytes of early lactating cows experiencing a negative energy balance have epigenetic alterations when compared to mid-postpartum females and heifers, indicating that the metabolic status of cows at the time of breeding may have effects on the next generation (3). Taken together, all these studies indicate that the environment, management, and nutrition close to the breeding season or during pregnancy are important factors to determine not only the performance of cows, but also the performance of their future generations. Bulls breed several cows and heifers in cow-calf operations

and, therefore, have a greater impact on the genetics of the herd than cows. Hence, it is extremely important to investigate how the environment and management of bulls can induce changes to the sperm epigenome that can have an effect in future generations. Studies in other species have unveiled that many factors can contribute to alterations in the sperm epigenome, including nutrition, exposure to toxins, and even age. In bulls, a recent study has shown that an early plane of nutrition to accelerate the onset of puberty alters the sperm epigenome (4). Interestingly, a study has correlated variations of the sperm epigenome of dairy bulls with several reproductive traits, including heifer conception rate, cow conception rate, length of productive life, daughter

pregnancy rate, and sire stillbirth, which indicates that epigenetic alterations of the sperm are indeed impactful for cattle reproduction (5). Research addressing transgenerational epigenetic inheritance in cattle is still in its beginning, but studies are already showing that the environment can affect the future of individuals way before we thought, even before breeding takes place. There is still a long road in terms of research, but it is possible that dramatic events such as an intense drought or an extremely hot summer close to the breeding season or during the period of pregnancy are more impactful to the health and productive performance of the herd than we used to think.

CROSS DIAMOND CATTLE COMPANY by Derek Sample

Derek@ABPmag.com

Bertrand, Nebraska - As we drive up the road to the Cross Diamond ranch I can feel the energy changing. It‘s subtle, but there‘s a definite calm in the air. This feeling is confirmed when we meet Kim Ford, the better half of the couple that owns this wonderful place. We stopped here on the way to McCook where we will be taking an Angus tour tomorrow. So Tim and I decided to schedule our own tours before and after in order to share some face time with customers old and new. On this beautiful morning, we find ourselves at one of the largest Seedstock operations in Nebraska. Cross Diamond has a great reputation for their focus on Red Angus Genetics along with following up with top notch customer service, and it‘s working.

16

This place is huge. The pastures expand farther than you can see. Kim takes us on a personal tour and her demeanor exudes pride with every spoken word. They work hard and manage the best operation they can which provides impressive results for their customers who return year after year. They have 2 locations, their Headquarters in Bertrand and another in Elwood about 13 miles northwest. The commercial herd and yearlings are run at the Elwood location. Rotational grazing between the two locations and year round grazed forage utilization are the keys to the development of their cattle. Their cattle thrive on grazed forage. Kim tells us that their herd is bred with a focus on maternal traits first since their front line in profitability lies in fertility and American Beef Producer

calving ease to get a live calf on the ground. Then their emphasis becomes soundness, disposition and fleshing ability. In addition growth and carcass traits share their spotlight as well. Basically they strive for consistency and dependability in their breeding program and their program is defined by all of this and more. As we drive through the nooks and crannies of the buttes and stop to take photos among the large crowd of heifers grazing in Bertrand, you can experience first hand what the Fords are doing. This place is just remarkable. They are fully committed to handling cattle with respect and you can tell that they expect it in return. They handle the cattle in a variety of ways - on foot, horseback and four-wheelers – so that the cattle are accustomed to a

November 2020

variety of handling methods. Mature cows average about 1250 lbs. with a body condition score of five at pregnancy. While listening to Kim Ford sharing these specifics with us you can tell that she is rather pleased with this moderate and mature size of their cow herd. It really fits their management program as well as their commercial customers. Nearing the end of our tour, I can tell that the pride in their breeding program is based on sound, efficient, fertile and docile cattle. Kim mentions again that their priority is fertility, since without a live calf year after year, no one can make it in this business. Calving season begins in late March in the commercial herd and early April for the registered herd. Then all cows are exposed for a 50-day period, and yearling heifers are exposed for a 30-day period to keep a tight calving season. This will breed fertility into the herd year after year. When we return and check out their sale building, you can‘t help but notice on the outside in large letters is their motto “Bulls Bred Ford Tough.

As I‘ve known them for a few hours, I have come to believe that motto is true. These folks work hard to the bone. Yeah, I‘ve met tons of ranchers and farmers that work hard, but I think this family is up there in the winning categories. Even in 2020, which is a challenge for all of us in some way, they share in their latest Chronicle “it has taken a little more work to find the good in 2020. But in Agriculture, we are well skilled in finding the positive side in things. For example, we may see fertilizer when everyone else just sees manure. Just keep moving, the tough journeys often have the boldest memories and the most valuable lessons.” The Cross Diamond crew consists of a great group of people that work well together on a day to day basis. In addition they have great selling partnerships with various Angus ranches that help them to increase their numbers of bulls, along with broadening the diversity of their focus on their breeding programs in order to

November 2020

provide a great selection to fit the needs of their customers. With all of that said, they are preparing to host their Annual Sale this coming December 14th. This sale will be a doozy! They will have 240 coming 2 yr old Bulls, 8 HybRED bulls and 350 commercial Bred Heifers. This offering is made up of their own genetics plus a top-flight group of guest consignors. Then there‘s the free nationwide delivery and the first breeding season guarantee. That says the Fords are serious about their business.

American Beef Producer

A special treat is in store for you if you are around their neighborhood on December 13th, the day before their sale. That Sunday, the Fords are hosting a “Sunday Cattle Drive and Appreciation Supper”. An effort to provide interested parties a chance to leisurely drive their vehicle through the sale cattle in pasture lots until dark. Then stay for refreshments and supper, as Kim says “please come and enjoy a great meal and fellowship with other cattlemen and women.” Personally, I‘d like to attend. Sounds like a fun day. ABP

“Every morning in Africa, a Gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest Lion, or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a Lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest Gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the Lion or a Gazelle. When the sun comes up, you’d better be running.” ~ Christopher McDougall Each morning, at Herbster Angus Farms we HIT THE GROUND RUNNING—tirelessly reaching for our intended target, just like the LION. We have a clear goal in mind for our cow herd—to combine both EPD superiority and phenotype. Over the decades, that hasn’t changed. Our program is forever on the HUNT for cattle that exemplify the combination of outstanding conformation with excellent figures. The females we are adding not only modernize some of our existing cow families, but also incorporate outcross genetics that enhance our current program. There are times in life when you are either PREDATOR, or run the risk of being PREY. When adding cattle to our herd, we never compromise and never settle—always SEARCHING for the one that has it all...and we FOUND her.

FALL TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

by Tim McCray Tim@ABPmag.com

North Dakota in October can be surprising. Clearly Mark Twain never spent any time here. Otherwise San Francisco would not be getting the credit. This year’s angus tour around Minot started off a 2-week journey. Fall cattle tours have sort of turned into my last travel opportunities before the busy pre bull season starts. Oh, and all those other holidays too that bring people together. With Doug & I in Minnesota, and Derek in California it has been challenging not having face time with coworkers. However, this proved to be a great opportunity to bring us all together. After some fresh oil and tires Derek arrived in Minot first, and even a full day earlier than he needed to. Upon arrival, he was told the sun had not been seen for days due to the large number of fires in the West. Afterall, he had been traveling quite extensively through fire country. Minot is a pretty cool town actually. Derek was born only a few hours from there. Despite being too young to remember that time, he described this feeling of being at home. I too realize that feeling of home. North Dakota and it’s people are very hospitable, even if the weather is not. However late September for the Angus tour proved to be well planned. It’s decided that Doug will ride the tour bus, while Derek, I and the 2 dogs will follow in the Ford. Morning comes and we find ourselves in a remote pasture or two. Quick speeches were given and proud owners have lots to share. Ash Coulee ranch, Feiring Angus, Glasoe Angus, & Overland Angus were the stops of the day. At the final stop, Derek & I are told that we need to visit Writing Rock. No one really told us what it was, but insisted we visit. At this point, we’re only a few miles East of the Montana border, and also only a few miles south of Canada. So, a detour we shall take while everyone else heads to the dinner stop. We also headed North to visit our other neighbors, and just to make sure they’re actually closed. Yup, 30

photos by Derek Sample Northern border all secure. I Should also mention at this point, that other than a random few wearing a mask here and there, you wouldn’t know we’re in a pandemic of anything. SO we headed to the “Old School” center for our dinner stop, and to catch up with the rest of the tour. As is usual on these tours, you aren’t walking around hungry, or if you are, it’s your fault. No exception here. After a delicious dinner of beef and potatoes, bus is loaded, Dogs are back in the car and we’re headed back to Minot for the night. Next day finds us visiting Sundsbak Farms where Derek and I needed to head off to our next destination as the tour went on to Hall Stock Farm. Over these two days of the Minot tour, we find ourselves immersed in Angus, all Angus, all day. What a great group of people. Most of those touring are Angus ranchers themselves and just want to compare notes and perhaps share tips and especially look at cattle. These tours are immense work to put together and put extra hardships on those hosting tour stops. But wow, what a great experience to have. With so many stops in a day, and travel time between, it usually doesn’t give much time for “visiting” other than a quick introduction of who and what we are – always nice to meet someone in person, rather than just a voice on the other end of the phone. So it was a welcome break from the road to visit Topp Herefords near Grace City, ND on our return to the twin cities area. You’ll be able to read more about our visit here in our next issue coming in January. After a few days of recuperations, and catching up on work. The three of us set off in different directions for the next tours. Doug American Beef Producer

would return to Minot for the All Breeds tour, personally the one I look forward to every year. Derek, myself and his two dogs Willow & Maverick (who have also been with us the entire time) head off to Nebraska… Doug’s visits on the All Breeds tour included Frey Angus, Double T Simmentals, Klain Simmentals, Presser Red Angus, Bruner Angus, & Hager Cattle Co. on day one. And Hansen Simmental, Sys Simmentals on day two, and a final stop at Forte’ Livestock. The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association always do a tremendous job with this tour, and they really deserve to be applauded for their commitments and hard work. As Doug was heading back to Minot, Derek and I we’re making our way towards McCook located in South West Nebraska for our final Angus tour. I like to be able to take advantage of travel situations as much as I can, and covering that much distance, gave me a lot of opportunities to arrange stops along the way to, around, and from MCCook. So our first scheduled stop on the way was to Herbster Angus near Falls City in SE Nebraska. I need to point out here that Derek & I travel well together. We’re having a lot of fun with this magazine at this point, and sometimes the fun leads us to new and exciting adventures. Having such a good time on the road, we completely missed our exit to take us to Herbster’s. So a little 1 hour late detour, gave us little light to work with. But we were immersed in the history of Herbster Angus from our Meeting with Mandy & Ed Raithel that evening. Also at Herbster’s, Maverick was able to immerse himself in something, shall I say skunkish. So he earned the nickname of smelly dog from me. I had attempted to make contact with several prospective stops November 2020

Sunset at Hueftle Red Angus Ranch. Neil and Anita took us on an adventurous 4WD tour around their pastures which go for miles in and around Cozad, Nebraska. This family has been in cattle for years and years and it shows. Found it hard to leave... Kim Ford at Cross Diamond Cattle Company took us on a 2 hour tour of her ranch. What a beautiful place they have and it‘s well run for such a large operation. Read more about them in our Feature Article about Cross Diamond Cattle Co on page 16

near McCook prior to the start of the tour. Not being an official tour day, our first order was breakfast. Fuller’s family restaurant came highly recommended from the concierge’ at our hotel, and now, also by myself. If you ever find yourself in McCook, do yourself a favor and stop in. Aside from good, home cooked style food, they have an extensive collection of about 2500 cookie jars on display throughout the dining area. Which I’m told is only about half of the original collection. After a hearty breakfast, our first stop was Cross Diamond Cattle Company near Bertrand. Which, (if you haven’t already) you can read more about on page 16 of this issue. Next was another tremendous visit to Kuck Ranch. Between those 2 stops, that actually took up the whole workable day. Many, many thank you’s to Kim Ford, Abe Kuck & Stacy Jon’s for showing us around their places. We look forward to hearing more from each of these breeders in the future. From Kuck’s we made our way back to McCook, where thanks to my great planning & absent mindedness of the day we missed out on the start of the tour festivities at the Coppermill Steak house. Which, from what I gathered was an event we shouldn’t have missed. Next day we toured the Nebraska Bull Service, Ely Angus, Bear Mountain Angus, Riverside Ranch, N.A. TimmerNovember 2020

man Inc., and Ruggles Angus. Where we had dinner, enjoyed last meeting opportunities, and some musical entertainment as well. Reflecting not only on this day, but also other tour days as well, we cant help but notice what a fantastic job everyone did, and what fun the rest of us had. The food was fantastic, and we made a great deal of new connections that we would also call friends. As amazing as these cattle tours are, it’s also much of a social event as new and old friendships are made, or re kindled. Which is REALLY what this is all about, our connections to each other as humans. On our return to Minnesota, my home, and Derek’s home for the time being. I had also arranged a quick stop at TD Angus / Rishel Ranch, and our next full stop at Hueftle cattle company near Cozad, NE. Neil & Anita took the time out to show us that Neflatska (Derek’s & mine’s new nickname for this state) was anything but. Once you’re off the interstate (which we actually tried to avoid) the land is filled with hills and canyons, some that can only be seen with an atv (like Kuck’s) or at minimum a 4wd vehicle. Neil and Anita Hueftle took us on an extensive tour of their pastures, and American Beef Producer

filled us with their history of the HXC brand and their incredible operation that stretches for miles in and around Cozad. We then had an overnight stop beefore (see what I did there) our first visit the next morning at Poppe’s Horseshoe Hill Ranch near Bloomfield, NE. Another great visit with wonderful people that I consider friends. The Poppe’s have nearly 40 years developing Bulls and they are currently selling Angus, Simangus & Red Angus in their private treaty sale every February. Our final stop on this portion of the tour before heading home was Caraway Red Angus. Where Jon & Blair have quite the herd of red angus near Lake Benton, MN. As that concluded the end of the official tour’s that at least didn’t stop us from traveling. Derek & Doug also visited Root Prairie Galloway’s in Fountain, MN and TEK Cattle near Eau Claire, WI. In the end, much more “face time” with our breeders, and readers alike. That certainly wraps up the tour and travel for this issue, but as we are going to press, Derek will be heading back to California, and I myself also have more travel in my near future.. I imagine we’ll have a few more stories to tell in the next issue…. 33

Have you ever purchased something and then wonder how you ever lived without it? Meet the Pedal Commander. Turning the odometer past the 125k slot this morning, I‘m reminded how great this truck is. It was my Dad‘s. 2013 F150 Coyote 5.0L F150 Lariat. It‘s not the first Ford I‘ve owned, but it‘s the first one I‘ve loved. But, of course, the one complaint I‘ve had all along was the pedal lag. When that stop light turns green, step on the pedal and it goes, right? Not at all. The lag on this truck was bad. I began to nickname her “Jello Puddin” since that‘s what it felt like to drive. I took it to the dealer and independent mechanics and of course they all confirmed that this is just the way it was. Nobody knew how to answer otherwise. So eventually I had to let it go. “Jello Puddin” and I would continue to put on miles together. A few months later a friend mentioned that I should try the Pedal Commander. “It eliminates that throttle delay completely” he said. My interest was peaked. I looked it up, read the reviews and ordered one. I received a small box a few days later and opened it up with anticipation. This tiny box was supposed to cure “Jello Puddin”? OK, ok. Then it‘s 5 minutes later and I already have a HUGE GRIN on my face. This truck is now AWAKE. It‘s a bucking bronco. It‘s a Bull in a valley of happy heifers. November 2020

Pedal Commander

For around $300, your truck‘s throttle lag will disappear...

This Coyote 5 liter engine finally wants to run with the herd. This is what the people at Pedal Commander hear all of the time. They make people happy. They sell to owners of trucks, cars, racers, UTV‘s, the list goes on. The inventors of the Pedal Commander worked for a chip company in Europe and they brought this idea to their bosses. It went nowhere. So they struck out on their own and moved to the US. Since moving stateside, they can barely keep up with the demand. Still don‘t get it? Ok. A little technical speak never hurt anyone: Newer cars are manufactured with Electronic Throttle Control (ETC). This means your acceleration is no longer powered with the old school throttle cable. Instead, everything is powered by electronics and your car’s computer (ECU). This electronic throttle does not provide the same performance so it creates a lag from your initial accelerator push (ouch). Manufacturers produce vehicles as a “one size fits all” process in an attempt to make a majority of their customers happy as a whole. Then most of us tend to customize our vehicles to make it more comfortable and convenient for our needs. This is where Pedal Commander comes in. It gives you the ability to make your gas pedal more sensitive for a sportier feel, or less sensitive if your main goal is to increase fuel economy. You have the ability to make your vehicle’s response exactly how you want it, when you want it. American Beef Producer

“You have the ability to make your vehicle’s pedal response exactly how you want it, when you want it.” I had to write that again. I called the Pedal Commander people and I asked if I could write an article about them. I also asked if I could get a discount for our readers and the answer was Yes! That code is AG10. Check out their Ad on the left page. In case you are on the fence, they have a 30-day moneyback guarantee. You should know that no one has ever returned one of these. Not one, ever. Plus it‘s “plug and play” and it doesn‘t void your warranty. If you end up ordering one and need any advice on how to use it or set it up, drop me an email and I‘ll be glad to help. You won‘t be disappointed. ABP

A P Cowboy Corner

Bartley, Nebraska - Meet Breyer Lampe and his buddy Hayden Uerling. We found these 2 cowboys having a much needed rest after spending the last couple of days working hard preparing for their stop along the Nebraska Angus Tour. Their Farm was one of many that we had the privilege of visiting on October 3rd. We were warmly welcomed by the Lampe‘s charming family and fell in love with the peaceful existence that they live every day. As we were checking out their herd of Angus, we noticed Breyer washing his show Heifer named Lucy 938. So we decided to talk to him for a minute or two. ABP: How old are you? Breyer: 12 years old 46

photos by Derek Sample

ABP: How did you become interested in showing cattle? Breyer: I went to fairs for years and became interested in it ABP: How long have you been doing this? Breyer: 3 years or so. I plan on the Kearney Classic next. ABP: Great. Do you work with Lucy every day? Breyer: I work with her every couple of days. I spend a couple of hours with her, wash her, keep her tied up, blow her out American Beef Producer

ABP: What do you like best about showing? Breyer: I like meeting new people and others who work with cattle too. I like the community. ABP: Does your sister show cattle too? Do you do any of this together or do you compete against each other? Breyer: No, she does her own thing. No competition. ABP: We can‘t believe how beautiful and lean Lucy is. Breyer: Yeah, I watch her diet. She‘s definitely a princess and shows well. ABP: Is there anything that you don‘t like? Breyer: Nope, I love doing all of it. I love living here and working with the cattle. November 2020
