How Emotions Affect Farm and Ranch Succession

family members, feeling like they do not have equal status, then their attitude and participation might be affected. It makes some feel inferior and can affect self-esteem. Treat everyone with respect. Be courteous to all participants. When conversing about issues, be sure that everyone has the opportunity to participate and that they are treated as equals. Role: All participants should be satisfied with the role that they have within the business (farm/ranch). A fulfilling role has three qualities: it has a clear purpose, it is personally meaningful and it is not a pretense. If there are participants who do not have a fulfilling role, they will not feel like they can make an effective contribution. Everyone wants to feel like they have made a meaningful impact on the task at hand. In addition to those five ‘emotional blocks’, be sure to consider the value of women and young people. For the emotions of autonomy, status and role, women and the younger generation may feel like they have been disenfranchised from the process because they are not being treated fairly or equitably for these three emotions. When families meet, the younger generations and the women need to be fairly included in the conversation and negotiation. Their voice needs to be heard, appreciated, and valued. henever a family has a discussion about agricultural estate planning, conversations can become emotionally charged. Stakes can be high and feelings can be hurt just by using the wrong words in a sentence. If things go south and parties are upset, they will likely withdraw from the dialogue or leave the gathering altogether. When communications or negotiations break down, one way to help is to think about the five emotional blocks that need to be overcome if possible. They are: appreciation, affiliation, autonomy, status and role. Let’s examine each to see how these blockages can interfere with a family moving forward. Appreciation: All people want to be appreciated. Always ask yourself, “are you really listening?” Seek first to understand, before you can be understood. That is easy to say, but harder to live. If participants are not being listened to, they feel undervalued and left out of the conversation. Be sure to listen to understand. Do not listen just to criticize what the other party is saying. And do not listen while thinking about what you are going to say next. Find merit with the other party’s position, and prove you are listening and understanding what they are trying to say. Ask clarifying questions to improve your understanding of the information that you are receiving. Prove to the other party that you are listening and appreciate their points of view. Affiliation: When there is a conversation, are all

parties in the conversation being treated as colleagues or as a family? Or are we treating them like adversaries? Many of us learned how to negotiate from our parents, believing we have to win while the other party loses. These learned techniques came from buying machinery, purchasing livestock and other inputs for the operation. There are several examples of farmers who keep negotiating on a piece of machinery, working over the salesperson until they win. These learned techniques are probably not the best strategies for dealing with family. They are also not the best techniques when working on the family’s farm or ranch succession plan. Do you need to win? That means someone else may feel that they lost. When dealing with family, please do not treat them as adversaries. Autonomy: Are you free to make decisions or are you being blocked? Be careful not to say that someone is in charge, only to criticize or undermine the decisions they have made. Sometimes autonomy is blocked by accident. This failure usually goes back to poor or failed communications. Autonomy is a two-way street, lined with respect and good communication. If someone has a role, they need to be allowed to carry out that responsibility. Status: Are all participants being treated as equals? If there are participants, or

your semen tank isn’t doing its job. Semen tank maintenance is a small piece of farm management that may be overlooked, but once something goes wrong, you’ll be paying the price. Semen is a significant investment on your farm and proper maintenance and care

of your tank will protect that investment. A properly maintained tank will safely store semen for years, sometimes decades. The standard temperature inside a liquid nitrogen tank is -320 °F. The body of the tank is where all unused semen should remain as much as possible. The neck of the tank rapidly warms closer to the opening at the top. A tank with a six-inch neck ranges from -320 °F in the body of the tank to around -103 °F at the frost line (base of the tank neck) to above zero at the opening. When removing a straw, it is important to keep the canister and straw you are working with as low in the tank as possible. Work quickly and carefully. Never completely remove a straw or canister from a tank, this will likely result in sperm damage. Sperm damage can occur at -112 °F, which is why it is critical to keep straws and canisters below the frost line. In addition, rapid warming and cooling of straws by taking them out of the tank and returning them causes recrystallization. Large ice crystals damage sperm cells membranes and organelles. Damaged sperm cells will result in lowered motility. Maintaining your tank’s integrity is a critical piece of management that should not be ignored. First and foremost, monitoring liquid nitrogen levels is key. Recommendations for minimum liquid nitrogen levels in a tank are 3-6 inches. Never let your tank fall below that level, and if your tank level is low, check it frequently until you can get a refill. Low liquid nitrogen levels could indicate your tank is leaking. Store your tank in a place where it

Filling A Semen Tank

1. The storage unit is filled by pouring liquid nitrogen through the neck opening of the container or by using a transfer tube from an LN2 storage container. 2. When filling a warm container with LN2 , add the liquid slowly at first to prevent the liquid from being carried out by the high velocity stream of gas which blows out the neck until the inner shell is cooled down. Fill the unit about three-quarters of the way full and allow it to continue cooling a few minutes. Then completely fill to the desired level. 3. When starting with a warm container, the maximum insulation efficiency is not reached until about 48 hours after filling. Therefore, the LN2 loss rate will be high for the first few hours and somewhat above specification for the first two days. If maximum field working time is needed, it is a good idea to “top off” a semen tank from 12 to 48 hours after a warm fill. 4. Once the semen tank is filled, it should be visually checked every day, and the LN2 level should be checked weekly. If during inspection, the breeder discovers any abnormal tank activity (frosting or sweating) he/she should immediately take action to get another tank. To check the LN2 level, the neck plug should be removed, and a wooden stick should be lowered to the bottom of the unit. (Make sure the dip stick is resting on the bottom of the inner container.) Leave the dip stick in the container for five seconds. Remove the stick and briskly wave it in the air to speed the condensation of frost which will appear on the part that was submerged in LN2 . A livestock breeder should never allow the level of the LN2 to be less than one inch from the bottom. A routine refill schedule should be established with the breeder’s liquid nitrogen supplier, so a total loss of refrigerant does not occur. Liquid nitrogen costs anywhere from $.50 to $2 per liter, and a medium-sized semen tank will hold 20 liters. The LN2 coolant will cost around $.10 per day as opposed to a normal semen inventory value of more than $9,000.

doesn’t have to be moved or jostled around. The less you move a tank, the better it will maintain integrity. Store your tank on a pallet or off the floor if possible so corrosive materials do not come in contact with it. Be sure the room is well-ventilated and depending on your farm situation, the room (or the tank) may need to be locked. Monitor your cork/cap of the tank. This one relatively inexpensive part can save you a lot of money if damage or loss of integrity is detected early. Inspect the cork when you use the tank, a shiny cork should be replaced as soon as possible. Frost buildup around the neck of the tank indicates a loss of vacuum. Even new tanks can have defects

It’ is-320° F temperature is excellent for efficient storage of frozen semen. • It is a relatively inexpensive refrigerant. • It has excellent physical properties, being relatively inert, not supporting oxidation or combustion. It is a safe substance, but precaution should be taken when handling and contact with bare skin should be avoided. The inner shell is an unwelded, one-piece aluminum container. This assures maximum temperature equalization throughout. As the liquid nitrogen evaporates, vapors form in the inner shell and are

that cause leaks. A compromised tank will lose liquid nitrogen very quickly, so it’s a good idea to check your tank on a schedule, especially in the off season when it isn’t used often. Leaking liquid nitrogen doesn’t last long around the tank, so keeping your tank clean and in a well-lit area can help you see frosting when checking for damage. A well-sealed and properly functioning tank will not develop frost on the outside.

Trouble-Shooting

is the entire inner shell of the container is supported by the neck. It hangs like a pendulum and can deflect during abusive use, so handle with care. Liquid nitrogen continually evaporates unless it is stored in temperatures lower than -320° F. A properly constructed container will reduce evaporation to the rate that LN2 can be maintained for one to six months, depending on the size and model. Constant temperature inside the unit is especially important during times of extensive breeding. As a particular canister is raised and lowered to allow the removal of various canes or goblets, the frozen semen could thaw and affect sperm motility. Keep the temperature at -320° F throughout the tank to assure that the semen will not be subjected to temperature change

Maintaining your semen tank protects your farm investment. Make semen tank maintenance part of your management protocols on the farm and you’ll be sure to save yourself unexpected surprises at breeding season.

as cold as the LN2 itself. Therefore, a container that is half full of LN2 will be equally as cold throughout. Pulling a proper vacuum is the key component in producing a long-lived semen tank for seven to ten years. The outer shell of a tank is aluminum and is well suited to take the punishment of daily wear-and-tear around the farm. Special consideration has been given to the neck design of semen tanks to achieve a balance between the strength required for field service and low heat conduction essential for a long holding time. Necks are made of fiberglass-epoxy, meeting both of these requirements. Heat flows down the fiberglass-epoxy neck, and a foam plug intercepts most of the heat before it reaches the inner container. An important point to remember

The Art and Science of Developing Heifers By Les Anderson, Ph.D., Beef Extension Specialist, University of Kentucky

The

older I get the more I realize that heifer development is as much art as science. The art is understanding what type of female best fits your operation and your marketing scheme. What size cow best fits your management system? Which cows will produce the best replacements? The science is understanding the principles enabling the “right” heifers to succeed. The first week of January is an extremely important “check-point” in spring heifer development programs. Regardless of management system, one key factor dictating cow productivity is a heifer’s ability to breed early in her first breeding season. Data from many studies ranging back to

the 1960’s clearly demonstrate the key to cow productivity is timing of her first breeding as a heifer. Heifers that breed early in their first breeding season wean heavier calves, breed back more quickly, and become more productive cows. So, the key, then, is to optimize a heifer’s ability to breed early. Heifer fertility is greatly influenced by age at puberty. Most producers don’t consider age at puberty of their heifers to be a major problem, yet few know how many heifers are cyclic at the beginning of the breeding season. A Nebraska study demonstrated that the proportion of heifers that were pubertal on the first day of the breeding season varied greatly over five consecutive years in a single a herd. The percentage of heifers that were pubertal on the first day of the breeding season ranged from only 21% to as high as 64% over the 5-year period. For maximum fertility and reproductive

performance, heifers must have had at least one estrus before the beginning of the breeding season. Our goal then is to incorporate reproductive management techniques to reduce the age of puberty, increase fertility, and shorten the interval to conception. One of the largest factors that regulate puberty in the heifer is weight. For puberty to occur, heifers must weigh at least 65% of their mature weight. This weight is referred to as their target weight. Most heifer development programs require that heifers reach their target weight, approximately 65% of their

their target weight by mid-April. Heifers should reach a BCS of 5.0-5.5 by their target date. The next important phase in heifer development occurs one month prior to the start of the breeding season. At this time, heifers should be vaccinated (Vibrio fetus, Leptospirosis, and the respiratory disease complex which includes PI3, BRSV, BVD and IBR; modified-live vaccine is preferred), dewormed, and pelvic area measurements should be obtained. Heifers with small pelvic areas and especially large heifers with small pelvic areas tend to have greater difficulty calving. Now is the time to contact your local veterinarian to schedule this

pre-breeding work. Producers should consider estrous synchronization and/or AI. Estrous synchronization and expected mature weight, by the onset of AI have many advantages which include their first breeding season. Because fer- higher pregnancy rates, heavier, more tility increases until the third estrus after uniform calves at weaning, and increase puberty, heifers should reach their target production and labor efficiency. Keep the Trains Moving; Prevent Stomach Obstructions By Christine Gelley, Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator, Noble County, OSU Extension (originally published in the Ohio Farmer) The stomach is a fascinating part of the body, regardless of what species you study. Digestion is an active and noisy process, from chewing, to swallowing, to breakdown, absorption, and disposal. People tend to associate the idea of a “churning stomach” with an illness, but really, the stomach should be churning (well, moving) to do its job. If it is not, you could be in trouble and experiencing a bowl obstruction.

Humans can tell that something is definitely wrong, if they have a bowl obstruction. Within a couple days, the inflicted person will be completely miserable and perplexed, leading them to seek aide from a medical doctor if this occurs. Symptoms include bloating, diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and general physical weakness as a result. Babies and animals are less descriptive when experiencing digestive stress. Observant parents (of human or animal offspring) may not know what is wrong but should be in tuned enough to realize the situation is not good and seek assistance before symptoms of malnutrition or abdominal tissue death occurs. Unfortunately, due to the inability to speak coherently, animals that have a digestive obstruction may waste away before the mystery of why is solved. Managers will notice that the animal is behaving oddly. They will go off feed, have watery stool, and gradually lose body condition, but rarely show signs of an infection. Ultrasounds may reveal the issue, but not always. Contents of the digestive tract can be difficult to distinguish on an ultrasound, depending on the material. Metal objects (which can cause hardware disease) or intestinal twisting may be obvious, but contaminants like plastic or Styrofoam are less so. On an ultrasound, plastic and Styrofoam may appear to

Sheets of plastic (large or small) will float on top of the rumen fiber mat and could block the healthy movement of gases through either end of the animal, thus causing bloat. If many pieces of plastic are ingested, the warmth of the rumen can bind the small particles into dense masses that can block further passage into the intestines and cause malnutrition. They can become lodged in the esophagus during regurgitation and cause suffocation. Alternatively, the plastic could remain in the rumen, getting tangled up with plant material, and taking up space in the rumen, causing decreased intake. In the case of the latter, the animal’s demise can progress very slowly and go undetected until natural death or processing. Any farm manager could find themselves confronted with this scenario. Accidental bale wrap ingestion is a contributor to these conditions, which can be referred to as “plastic disease”. Biodegradable sisal twine stands a better chance of passing through the digestive tract, although it can become tangled

with plant fiber as well. In general, bale wrap (plastic net wrap or solid wrap for baleage) is an excellent tool to improve hay storage and preserve quality, but efforts must be made to prevent accidental ingestion during feeding. Before grinding hay for a mixed feed or presenting the bales to the animals, remove all the wrap from the bale. This can be increasingly difficult in the winter and on frozen baleage, but a careful eye and persistent management can go a long way to reduce these problems. Litter is another issue. Many states spend millions of dollars to remove litter and trash along roadsides. Along with being unsightly, this litter may be accidently ingested by many kinds of animals, including livestock if it is baled into hay. Scout your field for litter before mowing hay, flag bales you suspect may contain trash, and/or unroll bales to increase your chances of finding the garbage before your animals do. If you witness littering, you can report the offense to your state Department of Transportation. Law enforcement officers including police officers, state patrol, and wildlife officers can issue tickets to litterers. Report your location, a description of the occurrence, and the license plate of the offender if you can. The convenience of disposable, non-biodegradable packaging our modern lives comes with a cost. Responsible use of this packaging is important for human, animal, and environmental health. My advice to you is take caution to prevent accidental ingestion of waste, know the signs of plastic and hardware disease, and share your story with your community to raise awareness about the negative impacts of littering. If you suspect you have bales that have had some caramelization occur, add on a test for Heat Damaged Proteins (HDP) or Acid Detergent Insoluble Crude Protein (ADICP). While this adds a bit more to the cost of the forage analysis, this additional test will show how much unavailable protein content there is due to the Maillard reaction, and rations can be adjusted accordingly. At some labs, this test will also show with adjusted Crude Protein content after damage has been factored in. While we are on the look-out for hay that could be heat damaged, it’s also a great time to look bales over for excessive mold growth. The same wet conditions that allow the Maillard reaction to occur can also be great for mold. While not always toxic, mold can reduce hay quality and palatability. New Kuhn Knight HP 160 ProPush Hydraulic Push Manure Spreader

Page 44 Midwest Beef Producer

February 2020

The new Kuhn Knight HP 160 hydraulic push box spreader features the proven ProPush® design customers have come to love, in a higher capacity, commercial duty package. The HP 160 with VertiSpread® vertical beaters is designed to haul and spread solid materials from dairies and feedlots, including gutter manure, yard scrapings, bedding pack and feedlot manure. The hydraulic push-type design means no apron chains, fewer moving parts and dependable service life. The HP 160 joins the 2044 and 2054 ProPush hydraulic push box spreader family, but features new upgrades and a greater heaped capacity of 600 cubic feet. The all-steel welded frame on the HP 160 provides a solid foundation for the spreader’s sides and floor. The solid weld-in tongue is cross-braced for strength and rigidity, while the updated pusher design has increased the clearance between the tractor and implement for greater maneuverability. VertiSpread vertical beaters equipped on the KUHN Knight HP 160 provide customers with a uniform 25-30 foot spread pattern with excellent material breakup. Polylaminate floor and sides minimize friction and deliver exceptional machine cleanout. For precise monitoring and application tracking, an optional scale system is available.
