Page 1

This one is in elite company when it comes to $CHB and IMF. His dam 8140 is a full sister to Guardians mother and they have the ability to pass so much carcass quality to offspring while still maintaining maternal excellence. This horned bull should be in high demand.

C 8019 SHERMAN 4196 ET

Without question this will be a pen bull for Denver and one that will have many fans. He has the body and build that we are looking for and a cow family behind him that makes him so easy to tie to and use hard as a herd sire. We feel this is one of the best Sherman sons available and some outcross genetics.

This Guardian son comes from a long line of great cow families being out of donor dam 8019. She is also the mother of a previous high selling bull Key West who is producing great females. Not only does he have the maternal package but he also is in the top 2% of the breed for $CHB and top 4% for IMF.

One of the best options in the offering for a double digit calving ease sire but still has the carcass numbers to put out a great set of feeding cattle. He is out of a first calf heifer that goes back to the Bailee cow family. Moderate sized, dark red and has lots of rib shape and muscle shape.

C 1101 ARLO 4201 ET

One of 3 full brothers in this offering sired by Arlo and out of the high selling female 1101 to GKB cattle in Texas. Some of his brothers have slightly better genomics but we feel this ones phenotype is the best. She is one if the breeds highest CHB cows that goes back to 8140 who is Bell Heirs full sister. Dark red and lots of pigment for generations.

REPUBLIC LAD 4165

This herd sire rises to the top of his contemporary group and is a true representation of the quality of the Republic sired cattle. He is out of a first calf heifer who is now a donor dam after weaning this bull with a 121 ratio. His EPD profile is so balanced where maternal and carcass traits are both combined into a phenotypic package that makes him so easy to find in a pen. C

C SHERMAN 4189

This Sherman son should be on everyone’s short list. The nice thing about him is both young and old cattlemen can appreciate this kind. He is dark red and smooth made with just the right amount of size and shape. He was named Reserve Champion overall bull in Reno and we feel he will be the kind for the long haul.

ET

This will be a pen bull for Denver and he will anchor a strong set that have not only the phenotype and look but also the EPD values that are in demand. Study his calving ease and birth values but then he is able to tickle a 200 $CHB. He is dark red and has the ability to enhance any breeding program and take it to the next level.

CCC 0166 CRAFTSMAN 3223 ET

This one is a true genetic powerhouse on paper with jaw dropping indexes for both maternal and carcass quality. He has the highest combined value of any bull in the offering and is out of our strongest cow families. Tess 0166 has made a name for herself at a young age as she was also the donor dam of the high selling bull in the 2024 sale and the high selling Angus female in the fall sale.

HEIKEN HaVoC 4041

AAA 20968934

Havoc leads off a great set of B2 sonslong, clean fronted and a wide based bull with the look of a herd sire. We expect to use him heavily.

We will be selling 2/3 interest with full possession.

Stockman is one of the best Incentive bulls we’ve raised. He stands out in the pen, and his impressive EPD spread - with a 72# actual birth weight to 120 WR, along with a high HP and high $M - embodies the traits we strive for in our herd. We are impressed with his numbers and phenotype and look forward to putting him to use in our own herd. We will be selling 2/3 interest with full possession.

Vermilion B2 was our pick of the 2022 Vermilion fall sale. With an exceptional EPD spread from birth to yearling, this Bomber son excels with his carcass EPDs at 329 $C as well as being in the top 1% for foot angle.

SHOOTIN' THE BULL with

Kelly Albrecht @ Albrecht Ranch Angus. Wapanucka, OK & Jeff Penz @ Penz Angus Ranch. Caddo, OK

Two ranches, One mission: Improve cattle in this part of the World

Derek: Hey, Jeff and Kelly. Your 14th Annual Albrecht/Penz Angus Bull Sale coming up on President’s Day, February 17th. How did you choose that date, and how is it that 14 years is an excellent example of a successful partnership?

Jeff: Well, we both sold bulls via private treaty for 10-plus years. When February came around, the phone started ringing for bulls. So, we decided to have a sale. We met with Matt Caldwell, our regional manager, to find a date that worked for everyone. Most people we wanted to work with, like our auctioneer and ring service, were booked on most dates except for President’s Day. Kelly and I agreed it could be a reasonable date because it was a holiday. Many folks are off work that day and don’t mind giving up a Monday to come to a bull sale in this business. So that’s our day to remember, President’s Day. It's worked well for us and with our marketing, too. Nobody forgets when President’s Day is.

Jeff: Clipping. We're just about to start clipping bulls. Then we shoot videos and semen checks. Everything must be done by the 1st of February, so we’re ready to start setting up for the sale the first two weeks of February. There’s not a lot of free time between now and sale day.

D: Definitely not. Tell us more about where you’re holding your sale.

Jeff: Caddo, Oklahoma. I live right across the road from where we have it. We lease the place from our friend Clay Freeney, who was involved in the sale early on. He’s an older gentleman who decided to sell his cows, so I bought them all.

D: Nice.

Jeff: He’s 82 now, and four or five years ago, he stopped participating in the sale, but we still hold the sale at his place.

D: Does he still come to the sale and hang out?

D: So, I’m sure you have your timing down by now; what’s going on with the sale prep since today, as we’re talking, sale day's a month away?

Jeff: Yes, he does.

D: Then how far apart are you guys from each other?

Kelly: We’re about 30 minutes away.

D: So, how many bulls will be offered at this year’s sale?

Jeff: I think we rostered 218. We’ll also have some registered females, and Kelly has a couple of pregnancies.

Kelly: They’re both out of Cherokee’s mother.

Jeff: We’ll have 40 registered heifers and about 150 commercial heifers for our regular customers.

D: Your sale went well last year.

Jeff: Yep, we sold bulls in 19 states. Our top bull, Penz Bandit 2524, went for $49k, and our Top Bred Heifer Penz Blackcap May 2622 was $26k.

D: Congratulations. OK, tell me more about yourselves, where you grew up, etc.

D: Where was your second choice?

Kelly: I sure liked Montana, but I hate the cold. It’s beautiful up there. Nebraska and Kansas were too windy. I liked parts of Texas, too, but I didn’t want to deal with any federal ground anymore.

D: The feds always looking for ways to control our ranchers and farmers.

Kelly: Well, I grew up in southern Utah. My family ranched out there on BLM and forest permits. We had some private ground that had been in our family for four generations. My brother and I owned it when a guy came by and wanted to buy it. We priced it too high and thought he wouldn’t be interested. Sure enough, he bought it. I was already looking around since I often told my brother I was done fighting with the government. I started looking for private ground in New Mexico, Nebraska, Montana, and Texas. Then I ended up in Oklahoma. That was 22 years ago, and it’s been great ever since.

Kelly: There’s no reason that the federal government should own land, period.

D: Agreed. Completely.

Kelly: It’s just a way to control people. It’s no different than communism in the rest of the world. Big government wants to control the land and the people…it’s a joke. There’s no reason for BLM or forest service out there. Plus, the Forest Service is getting worse and worse every day. They didn’t used to be as bad as they are now, but in most cases, they just waste taxpayer dollars. They don’t manage the fires. If they were allowed to get back to predator management, sheep could eat the underbrush, they could build more roads for fire breaks, and we could let the loggers go back to work. Its no different than the wild horse mess; nobody is smart enough to fix that, either.

D: Yeah, they feed everything like an old man sharing scraps with pigeons.

Kelly: It’s incredibly mismanaged. Those problems have easy fixes, but nobody wants to fix them. It

would be so different if that land were owned by people or somebody who could use and care for it. Look at Oklahoma and Utah; around 70% of Utah is owned by the federal government, whether BLM, Forest Service, National Park, State Park, etc. It started because they were trying to control the Mormons when they all moved out there. The government doesn’t pay taxes, but the rest of us do. It’s such a big mess, and it needs to be cleaned up. Once, we needed to clean a pond out since it washed out….it was 5 years before we were allowed to go in there and fix it. You have to get an Indian artifact study, a NEPA study, an endangered species study, it’s all a bunch of bullshit. They would not let us fix this pond that had been out there for 100 years because they found an endangered snail. Remember, its way out in the middle of the desert. My Dad blew a cork and said, “Well, when the mud dries up, that snail will be in real danger.” <laughs>

D: Great response!

pond on your land, you build a pond. If you want to remove some trees and clear something out, just do it. Right? In Utah and other states, you can’t do any of that.

D: Just proves it was smart to move to Oklahoma. Alright, Jeff, tell me your story.

Jeff: Well, in 1981, we moved to Bokchito, OK, from Rochester, Minnesota. I think the common denominator between Kelly and I is that in this part of the world, if you want to raise cattle, you get more bang for your buck. Regarding carrying capacity and what it costs to buy land with the rainfall, you get a lot more here in Oklahoma for every dollar spent. That’s how we ended up here. You can run more cows per acre, and you get the 40-inch rainfall. So, we moved here to escape the urban sprawl in Minnesota.

D: That is a busy place. Mayo Clinic, tons of industry, lots of corporate, and so on.

Jeff: My Dad started looking for the same reason: high taxes, plus you’d have to get permits to do anything in Minnesota. He was also sick of the cold weather, so it was time to move. He bought our place in ’80 and moved here in ’81.

Kelly: They finally let us go in there and do it years later. That’s how stupid this is. The fact is that the federal government will always be in control. There’s just no common sense.

D: I hear that in just about every interview.

Kelly: Here’s the difference between Utah & Oklahoma–instead of 70% owned by the government, it’s 97% owned by the people. That’s a way better deal. People in Oklahoma manage the land much better, and if you want to build a

D: Doesn’t your family go back 111 years in ranching, Kelly?

Kelly: Between Utah and Oklahoma, yes.

D: Has it always been Angus for you guys?

Jeff: We had commercial cows before we got into registered. My folks had old Herefords in the 70’s and 80’s. My dad sold Hereford Bulls for years. When I was younger, we had commercial cows growing up. Then, I got into the registered Angus business in 2001. My grandfather had Angus and Hereford, but it was different back then. Angus became more popular over the years, and people moved to it.

D: In the 1940s, my grandfather had Hereford and Angus, and he couldn’t decide which was his favorite. Have you had any regrets?

Jeff: No. The cow is the reason I went to Angus. I think they’re the best mother cows, and that’s why we have a lot of Angus commercial cows. Plus, I was interested in AI and ET work, and then I had the opportunity to buy some extra cows, which I did.

the Albrecht family: Jake, Halee, Kelly, Laura, Jarrett, Faith, & Carlee

D: Tell me about your families and if you have any help on the ranch.

Kelly: My family works in it every day. My boy Jarrett and his wife Faith help us, and Laura, my wife, is involved in everything daily. It’s pretty much a family deal. We hired Alex Gideon, a boy from Nebraska, and he’s been with us for about 6 months. He helps us feed and check on cattle and everything else.

Alex is buying some of his own registered cows, and his brother is a partner on some with him. His Dad runs the Burwell, Nebraska sale barn up there. So, Alex has a good background. He also worked at Schaff’s in North Dakota for a year. He’s a smart kid with a great work ethic and that’s hard to find. He knows the Angus breed and pedigrees; he’s sharp. He can look at a cow and know immediately if it’s good. I also have two girls. My oldest, Halee, lives in Spanish Fork, Utah. My youngest, Carlee, has just finished her Physical Therapy studies and she lives in Provo, Utah.

Carlee; she might end up in Hawaii. She’s not scared to go somewhere and live.

D: Sounds like a free spirit. What about you, Jeff?

Jeff: My wife Paula has an off-farm job, which she usually keeps busy with. We have a daughter, Presli, who graduated from college and lives north of Houston with her husband. He's an engineer, and she works for a hospital.

My son, Derek, works and sells real estate and has an off-farm job. He graduated from OSU, is involved in his cows, and partners with me on some donors. No grandkids yet, but I bet it won’t be long! <laughs>

We’re both blessed to have great families and support from them, too. We couldn’t do it without them. They help us in everything we do, from raising the cattle to the big sale day.

D: Tell me about the sires that you use. I saw Schaff’s on the list; who else is your top choice?

D: Do you think they’ll return sometime, or are they excited about their futures in Utah?

Kelly: I think Halee and her husband would move out here. They’re looking for a place to escape the city and all that mess. But there’s no telling with

Jeff: Well, we’ve used a lot of Schaff’s influence. That’s how Kelly and I got to know one another. Early on, when I started in the registered deal, I was following some of their bulls, and I bought a bull in 2003 sight unseen. I used many of their bulls, and I think it was ’05 when Kelly bought

KLA Rockstar 496 – He sells on February 17th at the Albrecht/Penz President's Day Angus Sale

SAV Bando 4597 up there. I was looking at the report, and it said Albrecht Ranch. OK. Well, who in the world is from Wapanucka? <laughs> So I got out the phone book and looked him up

Kelly: We’ve got some young bulls coming up for this sale that are exciting. I’ve got a bull called Cherokee. Several are coming up, including Checkered Flag, Tabasco, and Scale Force.

All good Bulls-

–you couldn’t just search on Facebook back then. I found Kelly’s phone number, and talked to him for a while. I asked him if he was going to the sale next year. He said probably, and I said I’m gonna go with him. I never even met him, and I’m sure he thought I was a weirdo already…

Anyway, the following fall, I called Kelly, and we made arrangements, and he had a neighbor going with him. I just showed up and picked them up. We’ve been friends ever since.

D: So, you’re basically inseparable.

Jeff: We talk pretty much daily, especially when we’re working to get things ready for our sale. We talk once or twice a week most weeks, but when it’s sale time, we talk all the time.

D: What about sires this year?

D: Great, and we’ll come back to the bulls again in a minute. Are you noticing any urbanization out your way? Any urban sprawl?

Jeff: Well, we’re a short drive from Dallas, but Durant, the city closest to us, is growing quickly. It’s just spreading, and we’ll get letters in the mail every week with prospectors trying to buy our land. They’re always offering half of what it’s worth. They just hope we’re elderly and/or injured and will take $200 an acre.

Jeff: We’re using more and more of our bulls. That’s our biggest attraction at the sales these days. Our best bull was KLA Respect 136, which Kelly sold 3 years ago at our sale. It went to ZWT in Tennessee.

D: I’m seeing more and more bulls with Penz or Albrecht in front of them, and that’s exciting.

This urban sprawl is nothing like what it was in Minnesota, but it’s coming quickly since we’re about 100 miles north of Dallas. The growth in Oklahoma from the DFW market is insane. About 100,000 people move into the area monthly, or at least that’s what they tell us.

D: Wow. 100k a month is insanity. When I think of Oklahoma, I don’t think of crazy urban sprawl, all the new range rovers with California plates roaming about. Sorry to hear that.

Do you want to talk about today’s cattle business? Is there anything you’d like to share?

Jeff: I think we’re in a reasonable time regarding cattle. We’re where we need to be to survive in

the Penz family: Spencer, Presli, Derek, Jordan, Paula & Jeff

this business. Will it stay for long? I don’t know but never say never. We’re in a good place, and it’s a good time to be in cattle.

D: Any thoughts on our 47th president?

Kelly: Thank God, that’s all I can say.

D: I thought you’d say that, tell me more <laughs>

Jeff: Look how he’s making it better, and he’s not even in office yet. Thank God Kamala didn’t get in there, let alone Tim Walz <laughs harder>. OMG.

D: I'm not kidding. I have family in Minnesota, and they say everybody there thinks he’s a joke.

D: They can never answer that question, but they’ll brag about fixing the world and spreading their version of joy.

Kelly: They’re all just parasites that have never had to answer for what they do.

Jeff: I think Trump will advocate for us where others haven’t and always preferred that we go out of business.

D: Plants and crickets and bugs, oh my…

D: Yep, that’s why they all have TDS. They’re not used to hearing the word NO.

Jeff: We could run a successful government with 10 agencies; that’s all we need.

D: Agreed. Do you support any organizations in our industry?

Jeff: I was on the Oklahoma Angus board for a while, but it was a 200-mile drive for the meetings, so that didn’t last long.

- come from good cows

Jeff: They’ve been trying to pull off this climate change business on the people. Every 10 years, they devise a new hoax to disguise a money grab for their party. It’s exhausting, and not enough people can see through it since there are not enough wise people in this world. I think Trump will fix a lot of that, and we’ll be headed in the right direction for once.

Kelly: Our government’s way too big. I was reading the other day that 400 government agencies don’t even do anything except spend tons of our money on stuff no one cares about. What do they do for the people? Nothing. What is it we are paying for?

Kelly: I was also a rep for Oklahoma Cattlemen; we like them, but everything is up in the city, and it’s just too hardto get there. 2 hours up, 2 hours back, and the meetings take too long.

D: Alright, this is where we get back on track. What would you like everyone to know about Albrecht Angus and Penz Angus?

Jeff: The story here is about two guys who joined forces to sell bulls and improve the quality of cattle in this part of the world. That’s what we’re doing, and our customers seem to think it’s working. Most of them are within a 75-mile radius of here. Many of our cattle go out of state, but most of them stay here and are sold to the local producers and the guys making a living in

the cattle business. It was fate that brought us together, and we’ve maintained our relationship for 20 years now. Most folks find something to fight about, and we’ve never had anything to fight about.

We lift each other up. On sale day, nobody cares whose bull tops the sale. As long as we have a good sale and all of us are successful, we root for each other and don’t care who does the work and how it gets done. Kelly roots for me, and I root for Kelly.

D: That is impressive and so nice to hear. As I talk with you, I can feel that you are brothers working to help each other along your journey.

Jeff: We both bring a hundred or more people that we know, and all come together and have a bull sale. It’s a recipe for a perfect environment on sale day. I think we’ve become successful because we both work very hard at this, and we don’t let greed or envy get in the way of one another.

out of bulls, he sends them to me. When we’re both out of bulls, our friends sell bulls around here, too.

It seems like Jeff will have the high-selling bull every other year, and then I’ll have it; we go back and forth anyway. Last year, I thought Jeff’s bulls were better than mine <laughs>. That just made me try harder this year!

Jeff: Oh, we don’t care whose bull tops the sale. All Kelly’s bulls are mine on sale day, and all mine are Kelly’s. That’s how we get them sold.

D: Sounds about right. So, what are you feeding them these days?

Jeff: They come together in early September. We both have cattle that look similar anyway. But one thing you don’t want to do is feed them two different rations and show up on sale day. So, we start feeding the bulls together so they look the same.

They’re on a high roughage diet. They start in early September, about 150 days before the sale. That’s what we’ve always done. Kelly and I have seen and heard over the years that our bulls hold up well because they have to consume a lot of roughage in this diet. They get where they’re going.

D: By the way, speaking as a professional photographer, your bull photos are always impressive. Who does them?

Jeff: Our friend and a really good photographer, Eric Schmidt.

D: He sure does excellent work. It’s not an easy job shooting bulls.

Jeff: Yep. We take pictures in November because most Ads have to be sent out and ready by December 10th to be included in the January issues.

D: Do you use DVAuction for your live feed and online auctions?

Kelly: There are a lot of people out there who don’t want to see you succeed, even in our business. They want to pull you back down. Instead, we joined together, and I think we’ve made each other more successful.

Jeff and I were selling private treaty bulls. We could have thought, I wonder if he would do better than me, or am I going to outdo Jeff? But if I run out of bulls, I send them to Jeff; if he runs

Jeff: Both DV Auction and Superior Livestock Auction

D: Great choices with great people. OK, so we’re nearing the end here. I just have a couple more questions: Ford, Dodge, or Chevy?

Kelly: <chuckles> Dodge.

Jeff: We’ve got a lot of Ford trucks and 1 Dodge.

D: Dodge for work and Ford for gettin’ round?

Jeff Penz & Kelly Albrecht

Kelly: Well, we run all of ours every day. I’m a Dodge guy, and Jeff is a Ford guy. I give him a hard time about that <laughs>

Jeff: I don’t know who’s got it worse! <laughs>

D: I just had Ford buy back my ’23 truck because I met more people on the side of the road than I thought I ever would. <laughs>

Jeff: I also bought a little Toyota pickup to run around in. It’s great.

Kelly: That’s cuz he was tired of being on the side of the road, too. <laughs>

D: I love it. OK, do you guys have a 10-year plan? Or are you just moving towards the same goal every day?

Jeff: Well, here’s a long answer to that. We were putting a fence across the pond a couple of months ago, and the old fence there went across a wire that had rotted. I was about waist-deep in mud and water to get it done. So, the guy helping me ran the wire across it while we were driving posts, and I planned to put three or four more wires across it. Then, I was out in the middle of the pond when I asked the guy, do you think that one wire will last about 10 years? He said, yeah, probably. So, I said, it’ll be Derek’s problem then! <laughs heartily>

see what our boys do. Derek has a significant interest in Jeff’s operation, and Jarrett has a significant interest in ours. If those boys can take it over, Jeff and I can sit back, watch ‘em, and help ‘em here and there. Plus, with our genetics and what we’ve put together, Jeff and I will watch the herd grow and be more successful. We worked our whole lives to put this deal together, and we’re watching it become more successful each year.

Jeff: We’re just seeing how good it is, and this deal will be even better in the next 10 years if we keep it together. We could show what we’re doing here in Oklahoma, and then our boys would have a real good start and be even more successful for the next 50 years. It could be good for both of our families.

D: That’s great. Oh, are you ring or video on sale day?

So, ten years is probably all I need. Kelly?

Kelly: Probably the same as Jeff. We go as long as we can, and then we start to slow down. We can

Jeff: We’re video. We were one of the first to go in that direction. We wouldn’t go back even if we had to. It’s much easier on the cattle, and we need less help on sale day. The sales haven’t dipped because of it, and you’re not waiting for an animal to come in at the right time. It’s just the right way to go these days. Sure, people get excited and want to buy the first bull through the gate, but then they must sit through another 200 more bulls to sell before loading up. This way, they can load up any time they want to and not get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyone loading up their bulls simultaneously and heading out.

D: Great point. Another good reason for videos. OK, what’s your favorite cut of beef?

Jeff: Ribeye medium.

Kelly: Prime Rib medium rare.

D: Interestingly, I don’t hear Prime Rib very often. Ninety-five percent of the time, it’s ribeye. Also, Kelly, I noticed you are in real estate and represent ranch sales around the area. What got you started in that?

Kelly: I do that when I’m not busy with cows. I have been selling quite a bit of land for about 18 years. I like it. I like looking at new country and meeting people. But the biggest deal for me is time; when I have the time, I do it and enjoy it. But when I’m busy, it’s tough some days.

remind them how smart they are. None of them have ever made a living at what they’re preaching. Get in with somebody who does it and knows what they’re talking about.

D: That sounds intriguing, and I’d be interested to talk about that again another day for a different story. Do either of you have any advice for up-and-coming ranchers? We have many more subscribers from different cattle organizations, and they also recommend our magazine to younger people who are getting into this. What would you say to them?

Jeff: That’s a tough one. You must find someone successful at this and spend as much time with them as possible. Even if it’s unpaid time, your investment with them will return in spades. Don’t worry about the money yet; get out there and talk with ranchers and farmers. Don’t be shy; we all love to talk about our cattle. Take, for example, Alex, who works for Kelly, who is trying to learn as much as he can from folks in the business and not worry so much about the pay. He is learning so many things just by being around different operations and the people who run them. I honestly think college is a thing of the past, especially in this business. What would you say, Kelly?

Kelly: Yep, I think kids could get paid to work and get more education than they could in four years, spending money on a piece of paper that, at the end of it, still doesn’t teach them anything. D: Well said Kelly. Well said.

Kelly: If you want to be successful at anything, you need to work for and learn what successful people do in that industry. Not the guys in college, especially the professors that want you to

You also asked me about how I got into Angus cows. I wanted to come back to that as I never really answered that. I bought my first cows in 1993, right out of high school. They were registered cows, and we ran them up to 10,000 feet on the mountain of Sheep Valley in Utah, in the Fish Lake service permit during the summer. We had a cabin up there at 10,000 feet, and I started raising bulls back then that would run up the high elevation. So, when we sold out and moved here, we also brought a semi-load of registered cows. That was the base we continued with. It’s hard to find good Angus bulls in Utah. So, after we moved to Oklahoma, it was far easier to raise Angus, and I just stuck with it. I’m happy with our Angus program and am glad to be raising them with Jeff as well.

Topp Herefords—Crossbreeding Solutions

» Topp Herefords makes crossbreeding easy—consistently improving net profits in commercial Angus herds. On average, commercial Angus herds can expect a 5 percent increase in weaning weights from heterosis. If the average cow raises seven calves, in today’s market that’s an additional $488 in gross revenue. Multiply that by a herd of 250 cows and you are adding $122,000 to the bottom line without additional inputs. Can you afford not to crossbreed?

» Curious about how other cattlemen are making crossbreeding work at scale? Call Topp Herefords, 701.674.3152.
