MONTANA ANGUS TOUR -by Tim McCray. Tim@ABPmag.com

H

-Photos & Artwork by Derek Sample. Derek@ABPmag.com

aving an extra day to get back to Montana from our Nebraska Angus Tour at least gave us some breathing room. After finishing our round of golf at Three Crowns Golf course in Casper, we met up again with Ryan Large (Large’s portable AI) for dinner that evening at the Asian Sea Grill and Sushi bar, which was near the Big Horn resort, where we stayed, and was also the headquarters of this years 50th annual Montana Angus Tour. I don’t care for seafood, let alone sushi, so I reluctantly went along. Derek was happy, though, as it was one of those places where they cooked the food right at your table. But wow, it was good – steak, chicken, rice, and noodles- we were full when we left. Then, the following day, we were off again for the MT Angus golf scramble at Eagle Rock golf course, on the outskirts of Billings, near Vermillion Ranch. It was great to get another day of golf and good company. I have one of those brains that can't recall names when I need them, like right now. Yes, it would be a perfect opportunity to mention who was there and who won, but honestly, I don’t think I ever heard. Might have 16

been my team, so check’s in the mail. Lol. I do know that Derek won the award for the longest putt! Afterward, we returned to the Big Horn for the reception and banquet. We had a couple of busy days, but at least we were finally well-rested for this tour. The next morning, well over 400 Angus enthusiasts from 27 states, Canada, and a few foreign countries filled up 6 big charter buses, countless trucks, and other personal vehicles. Then the caravan began…

THE BEARTOOTH RANCH Columbus, Montana

The Beartooth is “Almost Famous” for years of exceptional Angus cattle, as the former owner is known for acting & producing blockbuster movies. Much could be said about its history and impact, but that would take too much space and still wouldn’t do it justice.

PINE COULEE RANCH Columbus, Montana

Jim & Andrea Stampfel, along with their 3 sons Colton, Ryland & Trey, make up the owners and operators of PCR. Most of their cow herd is run north of Red Lodge –

Square B Atlantis 8060 at Beartooth Angus (managed by Tyson & Shay Lind family) adjacent to the original Stampfel ranch where Jim’s brother John resides. John has a herd of his own with his family with similar genetics, and the two brothers sell many of their cattle together. Will & Keisha Croft and family operate the summer pasture and feedlot facilities on the Wagon Box Ranch north of Hardin. Bull calves from these sets are weaned, selected, and put into a partnership with John Carrel called Pine Coulee Bulls, LLC. From this point, all the chosen bulls are owned by the LLC and developed at the feedlot facility at Wagon Box Ranch. Pine Coulee maintains a developing flush & ET program, which has given them a remarkable increase in the consistency & quality of their

herd. “Keeping a strong focus on the maternal side of things ultimately leads to a more balanced, functional, and predictable herd,” Jim said. Jim’s display consists of all the females in his annual “Ladies of The Beartooth” sale (a successful sale held October 12th), which pasture in summer at Beartooth Ranch and still have roots in the old Beartooth cattle. This year also marked a return to Beartooth Ranch, where the sale was held. Be sure to check out their upcoming Bull Sale at Wagon Box Ranch on March 11th, 2024.

BARRAGREE CATTLE Columbus, Montana

Brian Barragree began buying the cows that would become the foundation for his operation during his time at the Beartooth Ranch. BCC is built on the backs of Angus females that blend phenotypic quality with honest production. The 10 sections of rough country the cows call home are less than forgiving in summer and winter, so they must have exceptional foot quality, ease of flesh, superior fertility, and great udders to make it there. The goal of BCC is to meet or exceed the needs of their commercial bull customers as well as fellow seedstock producers in need of females who work. The Barragree Cattle Company markets their bulls annually on the third Friday in March December 2023

in the Montana Performance Bull Co-Op that Brian started in 2008. Females are sold through Ladies of the Beartooth in October.

H-C CATTLE Columbus, Montana

John & Laurie Carrel started HC Cattle following their tenure at Beartooth Ranch. Fortunately, that was when the Stampfel’s wanted to expand and start a sale of their own. HC’s base is the Dutch Hollow Ranch north of Columbus, where the registered cows are wintered and calved. They recently leased a ranch in Waco, MT, where they run 1000 commercial cows, which has helped them test their genetics in a real-world environment. Their 16th annual bull sale is the second Monday in March at Wagon Box Ranch in Hardin.

LES CRAFT ANGUS RANCH Columbus, Montana

Les grew up in Northwest Indiana, and it was there, in 1963, when his father purchased a group of registered Angus heifers for their livestock & grain farm. He graduated from Purdue with an Animal Science degree in 1974, which led him to work as a feeder and fat cattle buyer for 7 years. He then transitioned

18

into a multi-line insurance agent until his retirement in 2019. Les and his wife Dawn purchased their ranch near Columbus in 2009 and moved their entire Angus operation there in 2019. Their cattle are gentle and easy to work with, as they must have calm dispositions since Les and Dawn do most of the work themselves. They have marketed bulls at Midland Bull Test for 30 years and sell bulls and groups of females private treaty.

JL FARMS - The Wagner Girls Billings, Montana

Darryl & Kari Wagner established JL Farms in 1993 for their two daughters, Jena Lee & Jordyn Lynn. Initially, they focused on commercial cattle as the girls were younger. In 2004, Darryl & Kari established a registered herd, purchasing initial females from Green Angus, Mydland Angus, and Barragree Cattle. Since then, they have expanded to 100 purebred cow-calf pairs. JL farms focuses on maternal genetics that excel in the pasture and at the regional and national levels regarding phenotype. Females are mainly marketed through the N.I.L.E. Angus female sale, the Wyoming Angus Female Sale, and private treaty. Bulls are sold primarily at Midland Bull test and through several private treaty arrangements.

Big Timber, MT

Indreland Angus originated in 1977, after a short while of following the mainstream concept of a high-production animal, they decided to focus their efforts on a production-per-acre philosophy. The result was in 2011, they averaged 21 acres per animal unit. In 2022, they were down to 14 acres per animal. That has been accomplished by working with natural systems, focusing on soil health, and increasing their forage production. Roger & Betsy and their daughters, Anne & Kate, maintain a holistic and regenerative management approach to produce healthy nutrition and environment for people, livestock, and wildlife. The Indrelands do things differently, which was apparent in Roger’s welcome speech. They maintain a herd vs individual philosophy. He highlighted things they don’t do: “trim feet, calve heifers separately, night calve, use pour-ons, fly tags or put-up hay. They seldom pull calves, use outside genetics, treat for foot rot or bad eyes, feed cake or hay, or spray weeds and pests.” They calve in May/ June and wean in late January/ early February. The heifers and cows calve in one bunch, on pasture, with no night checks. In most winters, their cowherd can graze stockpiled forage with supplemental protein. Roger also told us that December 2023

he “decided to mow their name into the side of the hill that morning. Which turned out to be much harder than he expected.” We thought it turned out great! See Derek’s drone photo in this article somewhere. The Indreland annual production sale is on the 4th of December this year, where they will offer 90 18-month-old bulls and about 100 bred females.

Ryegate, MT

Tim & Kris Todd are regular attendees on the Montana Angus tours, regardless of which section of the state they are in. It was a great pleasure to visit their ranch for the first time finally. Tim made the usual introductions of the team, and lunch was served, with ample indoor and outdoor seating. Gale Todd purchased his first registered Angus Cows in 1972. The original herd was established from the purchase of two groups. One group from Sir William Angus out of New York and the other from a ranch in Canada. At the time, the Todd family ranch was at the base of Green Mountain near Spearfish, South Dakota. A year later, they had their first production sale. By 1981, the Todds had outgrown their ranch in South Dakota, moved to Montana, and expanded the herd to 250 cows. In 1991, Tim and (his wife) Kris took over day-to-day operations from Tim’s father and moved the pro-

duction sale from spring to November. For over 40 years, GMAR has been committed to providing superior seed stock to the commercial producer. They have grown to be one of North America's largest seed stock ranches and are listed in the top 20 herds for registrations through the American Angus Association. Today's cow herd is based on their 3 leading ranches in Central Montana and another near Rapid City, SD. The cows are calved out in the spring and are AI-bred to start calving on the 1st of February. Sires used for the 2022 calf crop include Baldridge Flagstone F411, MRA Advocate 9035, S Wrangler 830. S Architect 9501, Sitz Virtue 11710 and Sitz Stellar 726D. The ET program consists of 50-100 embryos per year. Donor cows include THM Lady Innovation 3189-680 and GMAR Spur G606. GMAR markets some of their best females at the Ladies of the Beartooth sale in October. Followed by their annual production sale on the 3rd Friday in November. They also sell private treaty, beginning February 1st.

CURRANT CREEK ANGUS RANCH Roundup, MT

Gary & Phyllis Elliasson & family opened their headquarters just west of Roundup. Gary purchased his first registered Angus heifers at the first NILE sale. They’ve bred cattle that they believe will excel in any environment, breeding for balanced traits, longevity, and disposition. They have operated both a spring and fall calving herd. However, due to limited labor availability, they have transitioned their fall calving herd to calve in the spring and moved the spring herd to calve in late March. This has allowed them to produce those calves with less input and labor, with the youngest calves being held over to offer as 2-year-olds each year. They hold two production sales each year, the fourth Tuesday of April in Miles City and a new date this year of December 16th, at the ranch.

FROSTY CREEK ANGUS RANCH Roundup, MT

Perseverance. The Frost family continues chasing their dream of more acres and cattle. Despite the hardships they have endured since moving December 2023

operations from the Bitterroot Valley to Roundup in 1999. The Angus herd started in the 80’s with Terry’s father, Bill Frost. Terry & LaVonne, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have survived three fires at the ranch and are determined to achieve what they came for. The last fire took everything they needed to succeed with daily ranch work. Today, we’re standing in front of their barn, which they had just finished putting new tin on the face last week. Frosty Creek Angus cattle have proven themselves through all the hard times. Great mother cows that care for their calves and raise quality genetics through all the storms they’ve been handed. Recently, they’ve switched to a fall calving program, allowing better use of grazing land and the hardships on the help. They sell 18-monthold bulls via Private Treaty beginning in November. Also, at Frosty Creek Ranch, two other ranches/ families with displays:

Roundup, MT Duane & Julie Wacker brought a sample of their herd on display today. A Bar Angus is located just north of Roundup on ground homesteaded by their family in 1913. Pedigrees with proven foundation bloodlines are the mainstay of their genetics. They don’t concentrate on high number EPD’s, instead focusing on the mother cow, the center of the operation, producing cattle with enough growth to make it to the commercial cattlemen’s operation. Fertility, structure, maternal function, and a good disposition are required to stay in the herd. A Bar Angus continues to sell by private treaty beginning in November.

GREEN MOUNTAIN ANGUS

WWAR was established in 2016 when Stacey and Michelle Gravenhof moved their operation from SW Minnesota to Montana. When Stacey graduated from college in 1992, he purchased his first group of registered Angus heifers to AI and build from. They started selling Angus bulls a few years later under Gravenhof Farms. They have intensively used AI in their herd and use ET as much as possible, viewing every mating as an opportunity to improve genetically. Moderate, functional cows with exceptional dispositions are the goal.

plishments this past year. Joe Goggins gave us all introductions and a heartfelt emotional pep talk about Angus, Montana, and what being a rancher is all about. The Vermillion ranch is family-owned and operated, with 4 generations of family involved in day-to-day operations. Pat & Babe bought the ranch along the Yellowstone River northeast of Billings in 1961. Babe is on hand too, and someone had pointed out that we better pay attention to her prized rose garden as we make our way towards dinner. Indeed, the rose garden is immaculate, as is the rest of the grounds. The Vermillion Ranch operation extends to include The Diamond Ring Ranch, Pryor Creek Ranch, and South Pryor Development Center. Vermillion hosts two performance sales annually. The first, in March, with 5,000 performance bulls & replacement open heifers. The second, in November, sells 2000 bulls, yearlings & bred heifers.

Billings, MT

Arriving back in Billings for dinner and our final stop today, I doubt you could come up with a grander location to cap it off. The CAB logo on the side of their barn is almost like a neon welcome sign; surprisingly, I’m starting to feel hungry. Paul Dykstra (Director of Supply Management & Analysis) from CAB gave us all an update on what Certified Angus Beef is planning and their accom24

program. In the last couple of years, they have been putting in 130-180 embryos. Sires include Square B Atlantis, Baldridge Flagstone, and Musgrave Exclusive 316. That list also includes proven donors, including Baldridge Isabel E239, SMR Henrietta Pride 8511 & Montana Donna 8075. The Albin’s hosted their first sale this past February at the Swift River Ranch in Billings. This year’s sires include Square B Atlantis 8060, Brumfield Trail Boss 057, L/R Pay Day 9130, Sitz Barricade 632F, and more.

GREEN ANGUS RANCH

Larry & Jodi Green & family started raising Angus cattle in 1975. They first started with a couple of cows from Green Valley. In 1981, they purchased 60 cows from Shoshone Angus, which included a Shoshone Viking mother and several sisters. They have raised great cows such as Greens Princess 7418, Princess 1012 & Greens Savannah 9909. Most of the cowherd goes back to those females. They breed cattle that will thrive in the commercial cattle world that are consistent. Bulls are sold by private treaty.

JC HEIKEN ANGUS & SONS Broadview, MT

MT, now for 4 generations. They’ve developed an elite Angus herd focusing on fertility, depth, efficiency, and good feet. Joe “JC” and Jeralee live just over the ridge from where his grandfather started more than 100 years ago. JC & Jeralee started the registered herd in 1995 by leasing some cows from Circle Oak Angus in Pennsylvania, tracing back to Van Dyke genetics. About 5 years later, they purchased those leased cows plus 40 more and haven’t purchased a female since. By 2007 they had hosted their first sale, and that was truly the birth of JC & Sons. Three sons, John, Brian, and Ben, along with their wives and children, all contribute to running the ranch. Most of the time, “it’s all hands on deck” – right down to the younger kids holding the branding iron. They run about 700 head and AI about 600 cows to proven herd sires. The cattle are raised on hard, dry land pasture without creep feed. The top third of their bull crop is for sale on the last Tuesday in February at Miles City.

facility since most of the ranchers he visits are in awe of their operation. But Andrea also bought a bunch of Real Beef swag from us during last year’s tour! Scott & Andrea Spickard opened World West in the fall of 2007 and, since then, has become known as the home away from home for some of the world’s greatest sires, a service provider to some of the finest seedstock operations. Every day, they work alongside breeders who are legends across the globe, and with that, the team at WWSS continues to evolve. They’ve been blessed to have their children return to the business after completing college degrees. That, along with acquiring several strong team members who contribute with enthusiasm and dedication, has allowed WWSS to grow their reputation for providing excellent service for their customers and livestock. Everyone at WWSS was on hand today (or so it seemed) to answer any questions and escort Derek in to get special shots as well as a great drone video he posted on our FB page that evening. Scott & Andrea (and everyone at WWSS) are both proud and humbled by what they do and whom they work with. The choice to bring your bull to World West is not one they take lightly; December 2023

Columbus, MT - with displays from Winding River Angus, McDonnell Angus & Hunt Creek Angus In 1962, Midland Bull Test was one of the founders of the Performance concept, along with being one of the early test sites to offer an environment where young bulls and sire offspring could be compared in a neutral environment. Their operation allowed breeders to showcase and prove their genetics. Midland continues to gather and provide more data and information than anyone else in this business. Every April, the Final Sort sale offers the largest selection of balanced breeding stock with the ability to improve traits in any genetic lineup. This sale has become the largest in America for efficiency-tested, proven bulls. Midland Bull Test is also home to the largest feed efficiency testing program in North America, and today, is run by Leo’s son Steve, who continues to be an innovator living up to his father's legacy. 29

hoping to see a change in that. At 72, he’s seen quite a bit of change already, and he’s been instrumental in several of those changes. Leo & Sam McDonnell invite you to their sale in late November at Midland Bull Test and Darcy and Victor's sale in April at Buffalo, WY.

Billings, MT

Louis & Kathy Dubs moved from Nebraska to Billings in 1987 and have been selling registered Angus cattle in Montana ever since. A family operation, with their daughters Allison and Katrina owning a substantial percentage of the cows. They take pride in their cattle’s disposition, longevity, and fertility. In the last few years, they have placed more emphasis on carcass traits, while maintaining structural soundness and correct phenotype. They consign bulls to Midland, sell females private treaty and also bull private treaty beginning March 16th, 2024.

McDONNELL ANGUS BEEF COUNTRY GENETICS the EFFICIENCY BREEDER Columbus, MT

Run by Leo & Sam McDonnell with herds in Montana, North Dakota, and Kansas and a sale in late November. McDonnell Angus was started in the late 1960s, and their focus has been solely on performance with emphasis on the cow. Even though Leo has passed the duties of Midland on to his son Steve and their North Dakota unit to daughter Darcy and son-in-law Victor, he’s certainly not slowing down any. He’s still quite active with Midland and McDonnell Angus and continues to be progressive in adding value to today’s cattle operations. He’s focused on feed efficiency and a company called Enriched Ag, which Leo says has “the best technical, sophisticated grazing app with insights that you will ever find.” He’s also been working on a label that recognizes beef from those ranches that utilize those grazing technologies and efficiency genetics. “Ranchers have been using these efficiency practices for generations, they just haven’t benefited from it in the market, this [label] will help them benefit from that,” Leo said. “There’s a great opportunity for improvement in feed efficiency data, as it’s been done in every other segment of animal agriculture.” Leo continued, “The opportunity to reduce your cost on the ranch with your cattle by $150 - $200 and do the same on the feedlot benefits many people. It’s amazing how much progress you can make because its traits have never been selected for.” Leo feels that the rancher has been marginalized in what they do for the environment and providing such an abundant food supply in the whole process, and he’s December 2023

HUNT CREEK ANGUS Bridger, MT

The Peterson family is headquartered near Bridger and consists of Lowell & Lou, their children (who have families of their own), Grant, Clint & Sonya & Sonya’s kids Hayes & Serena. Each family manages their cows calving in January. They all wean close to Labor Day and have bulls on grass hay and bull pellets until sale day. They use AI to refine their herd genetics, mating carefully to keep balanced bulls and heifers. They had Rawhide, E&B New Edition, and Growthfund calves, along with their dams, on display. One example of their bull performance at Midland in April was an ADG of 4.5# on test with a great feed efficiency out of a Hoover Know How bull on a Casino Bomber dam. They will have their 27th sale this December 12th in Miles City.

Bridger, MT

Doug & Sharon Stevenson took over management of Basin Angus in 1994. From that point until 2010, the cow herd grew to over 2,000 cows. The Basin program was having a positive impact on cow herds throughout the country. However, several factors made the management of the large operation a chore. A difficult decision was made, and in 2010, the Basin Angus cow herd and the land near Hobson were sold. Basin Angus had embryo pregnancies born in cooperator herds in 2011, that would be the start of a new chapter in their program. Those ET calves included Basin Payweight 1682, Basin Joy 1036, Basin Lucy 1037 & 1667 which are the basis of the current herd. The new Basin headquarters near Reed Point was purchased in 2016. Also in 2016, Doug & Sharon's daughter Brittney married Trevor Berg, who now manages the ranch. The cow herd has expanded to 600 cows, and they sell over 200 bulls each year through a March bull sale and Private Treaty. This past October, they held their first female sale since 2010, commemorating the legacy started by Wayne & Marian 51 years ago!
