LETTER FROM THE PRIOR PROVINCIAL

Dear friends of the Augustinians, E

ven when our self-made plans are created in good will and with a generous spirit, they still might not be God’s plans. We must remain open to such a possibility. This is a lesson I was reminded of recently.

When I was first elected to the position of Prior Provincial in 2018, I had to face a different mode of service. Although it saddened me to leave my ministry as Pastor of St. Rita Parish, I considered that this new role of leadership would contribute to developing newer skills to serve the Order and the Church overall. This transition was especially poignant because I had to move away from many years of outreach ministry to vulnerable populations to which I was accustomed. Although priestly ministry is a great gift no matter where it is exercised, my priestly ministry found fulfillment in accompanying the immigrant community and addressing neighborhood concerns.

Through personal prayer, discernment and conversation with many who have accompanied me on this journey, I decided to accept a second Provincial term. In all humility, I accept God’s plan, as expressed by the collective support of the Province membership, that I serve a second four-year leadership term on behalf of my brothers in all of their respective circumstances. I anticipate my formal re-installation by the Prior General of the Augustinian Order during the Province Chapter this June.

For as many challenges these past years have brought, I have received a bounty of blessings through God’s mercy. Among my greatest joys have been to welcome a new generation of Augustinian priests and brothers. In this issue, you will read a wonderful profile of the three extraordinary and talented young men who joined our Pre-Novitiate at St. Clare Friary. This is the same friary that was brought into being this past summer thanks to the generous financial support of readers like you!

These three Pre-Novices stand at the outset of a process of spiritual and intellectual formation that will likely take six or seven years. If it’s part of God’s plan, they will emerge transformed as priests and brothers of the Augustinian Order. This is a slow process that demands patience and support from us all—as more priests and brothers are so desperately needed in our ministries. Thus, it was with great joy that we celebrated this past December the priesthood ordinations of Fr. Joe Roccasalva, O.S.A. and Fr. Jeff Raths O.S.A.—two genuine men with many years of service ahead of them. Please read more about their initial assignments in the article on page 4.

Lastly, I want to add that we proceed with cautious optimism towards holding our in-person Augustinian Gala on Friday, April 22 at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. We are always very grateful for the limitless generosity shared by so many of you through the efforts of our Advancement Council and Team.

n Saturday, December 18th, the Midwest Augustinian Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel was proud to celebrate the ordination of Fr. Jeff Raths, O.S.A., from Flint, MI and Fr. Joe Roccasalva, O.S.A., from Chicago, IL. They were ordained by Augustinian Bishop Daniel Turley at St. Jude Parish in New Lenox, IL. For their initial assignments, Fr. Jeff Raths has been assigned to the position of Parochial Vicar at St. Jude Parish, New Lenox, currently our Province’s largest parish. Fr. Joe will continue to serve as a faculty and staff member at Providence Catholic High School, where he began in Fall 2021. Before joining the Augustinians Fr. Joe earned his B.A. in Mathematics and Secondary Education from Saint Xavier University, Chicago, and worked for Mother McCauley High School and the Huntington Learning Center.

Both Fr. Jeff and Fr. Joe entered the Augustinian Pre-Novitiate at Villanova in 2014.

They were then part of a historic class of 10 men who made their first Simple Profession of Vows at St. Rita of Cascia Parish in July of 2016. With Fr. Ray Flores, O.S.A., they made their lifelong vows to the Order in May, 2021.

Fr. Jeff, age 28, encountered the Augustinians at his home parish where the Order once served for 90 years, St. Matthew Parish in Flint, MI. Though the Augustinians left the parish in 2015, Fr. Jeff is one of several vocations that will carry on our connection to the Diocese of Lansing for years to come.

Fr. Joe, age 31, grew up in the St. Cajetan parish on Chicago’s southwest side, where his father serves as a Deacon. He first came to be familiar with the Augustinian through Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. and Fr. Bernie Scianna, O.S.A., who said occasional Masses at the parish.

In eighth grade, his class attended a spiritual retreat led by Fr. Tom, who spoke to them about the life and conversion of St. Augustine.

The last time the Midwest Augustinian Province ordained two priests together was 2013, when Fr. Robert Basler, O.S.A. and Fr. Homero Sanchez, O.S.A. were ordained at St. Rita Parish.

Fr. Bob departs from U.N. for Appalachia Missionary work

D

uring his six-year term as the representative of the Augustinian Order to the United Nations, Fr. Bob Dueweke, O.S.A., focused his efforts on responding to the call of Pope Francis in Laudato Si for the “ecological conversion” of every person towards a “care for our common home.” When considering possibilities for his next assignment, he remembered back to the ecological crises and economic destitution he had witnessed during his work among the coal mining towns of rural Appalachia in 2006. He reached out to his friend and one-time teacher Bishop John Stowe in the Diocese of Lexington, who gladly accepted his offer to come serve in the region.

Fr. Bob currently works out of an office on the first floor of Lexington’s First Christian Church, just down the hall from the Sisters of St. Francis. Already he has begun joining the nuns’ work with the New Opportunity School for women, a nonprofit that helps women in poverty to gain access to education and employment. “Following the collapse of the coal industry, the poverty which hit this region has had a particularly crippling effect on women, who have never had the opportunity to get an education or develop on-the-job skills,” Fr. Bob explained. In two-week seminars, the Sisters and their staff bring together underserved populations of women—many of whom are coming out of homelessness, addiction, or abusive marriages—and host a series of workshops focused on developing positive self-images and practical, marketable skills to break the cycle of poverty.

In the Lexington Diocese, economic and environmental degradation have been inextricably linked, says Fr. Bob. While the coal mines that once provided employment to the region have largely collapsed or downsized, the region still must cope with the industry’s aftermath on their water, vegetation, and landscape. He added, “With mining, rivers and streams became highly toxic with arsenic, because they use arsenic to pull the coal out from the rest of the ground.” The effect became immediately visible to Fr. Bob as he toured the region’s residential roads: “They have these open pools that are orange […] Where people get their drinking water, it’s all now contaminated. As a result, people are dying at a very young age, a lot of cancers.”

Further, the advent of mining technologies that necessitated fewer employees also came with larger ecological impacts. Mountaintop removal, for example, in which seams of coal are accessed by using dynamite

to blast off the land above it signaled the end of employment for many in the region. “They found out that it’s financially cheaper instead of drilling in and paying all these people,” explained Fr. Bob. “They can use heavy equipment and blow off the top of the mountain with dynamite and just level the mountain range and they only need five men to do it, rather than hundreds.” In the process of removing large portions of the summit, “streams and the water table are disrupted, and the chemicals used to clean up enters the streams.” Fr. Bob added that “I have pictures that show how the rocks that were broken off rolled down the hill and crashed into families homes.”

Ultimately, Fr. Bob believes that the Province could establish a long-term missionary presence in the region and bring an awareness to the Chicago region about their connection to this environmental impact through the use of electricity. “My hope is that coming down here might be a spark for the province to rethink its commitments,” he explained. “Are we too localized in one area, whereas before we were all over the place. Again, Pope Francis has called us to go to the margins”

Having just arrived in the area, Fr. Bob plans to take a year to survey the people and the region and assess whether a long-term missionary position there would be feasible and productive for him. “You have to do what is called a ‘social analysis’ in the place where you live and work,” said Fr. Bob. “If you don’t know what people are experiencing, then how can you address their needs?”

PRE-NOVICES JOIN NEW FRIARY

A

ugustinian formation begins with a yearlong “PreNovitiate,” when a man discerning a vocation lives in an Augustinian community and is introduced to the Augustinian Rule and the Order’s Constitutions. As the Pre-Novice continues to discern his vocation, he participates in the community life. Time is set aside for Mass and prayer, as well as other social events. Upon completion of the PreNovitiate requirements, the Provincial formation team evaluates the readiness of the candidate to be advanced into the novitiate program.

In 2021, the Midwest Augustinians were blessed to welcome three PreNovices into our newly established community, St. Clare Friary. Fr. Ray Flores, O.S.A. serves as the Director of the Pre-Novitiate. Nathan Fernandes, of Toronto, Canada, Connor Fitzmaurcie, of Columbia, Missouri, and David Marshall, of Dayton, Ohio, are preparing their minds and spirits for a vocation to the Augustinian priesthood.

University of Toronto where he received a Bachelors in Psychology. Shortly after, he attended the Archdiocese of Toronto Seminary for five years while also receiving a Culinary diploma from George Brown College.

While attending the Archdiocese Of Toronto Seminary, Nathan became ill with Crohn’s Disease. After recovering from surgery, he took some time off from seminary to focus on his psychological and spiritual health. This led him to take a job at Marylake Shrine with the Augustinians. During this time, he did a lot of landscaping and sacristy until he was approached by Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. who offered him a job as his pastoral assistant.

After one year working at Marylake, Nathan applied to go back to the Archdiocese of Toronto, only to find himself battling with depression and mental health. “I felt a calling to go back to the Augustinians,” he said. “I needed to be somewhere where I felt supported, loved, and shown the true value of relationships.” Upon returning to Marylake Shrine, Nathan lived out the core Augustinian values, which ultimately led him to his decision to discern religious life with the Augustinians.

Connor Fitzmaurice attended the University of Missouri and received a Bachelors in Informational Technology.

Growing up, Connor admittedly never believed in God and considered himself an atheist. “I knew that religion had to be taken very seriously and if you did not believe, you had to work very hard to believe and vice versa,” he said. “I was just not ready to fully put in the work.” However, over the years, God worked on Connor, and he grew closer and became more knowledgeable within his Catholic faith, leading him to question how he might better serve God. “I knew now that I needed to give myself, my gifts and talents 100% to God.” Prior to the Augustinians, Connor discerned with the Archdiocese of Missouri and then pursued entering monastic life. He said he was drawn to the Augustinians because he always wanted a sense of community and teaching. “I need a community that would hold me accountable to continue to get closer to God and not waste my talents.”

David Marshall attended the University of Rochester and received a Bachelors in Arts and Music and a Masters of Sacred Music from the University of Notre Dame. David recalls his first religious calling was to music ministry his senior year of high school. While he attended the University of Rochester, he continued to feel a strong calling from God to join religious life. He attended the FOCUS Conference in Chicago in 2018 where he met Fr. Richie Mercado, O.S.A., who invited David to an Augustinian Discernment Retreat.

Upon his senior year at the University of Rochester, David had to make the decision to join a religious order or attend the University of Notre Dame. “I attended the University of Notre Dame to pursue my Master in Sacred Music to bring my talents to the Augustinians,” he said. “One reason I chose the Augustinians is that they accepted and let me foster my talents and gift for music. They always inspire and encourage me to integrate myself in other aspects of the church, prayers, and teaching.”

fter nearly fifteen years of service to the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel, Sr. Mary Ann Hamer, O.S.F., is officially retiring. Recently, the Province office had a small gathering to celebrate and share many memories, laughs, and accomplishments.

Sr. Mary Ann began her work with the Midwest Province in July 2007. She has been part of the central administration of the Province in the Treasurer’s Office through the Provincialates of Frs. Bill Lego, Bernie Scianna, and Tony Pizzo. She was essential in the moves of the provincial offices from Tolentine Center to the Catholic Theological Union and to St Barnabas Parish. Sr. Mary Ann has been a competent, reasonable, and flexible colleague with missionaries, men in parishes and schools, young men in formation, seniors in retirement and with FANA. Sr. Mary Ann has been with us at professions and ordinations, province feasts and provincial funerals. She has been a counselor and a friend to many. Her depth of commitment to us was formally recognized as she was affiliated to the Order by the Prior General in August, 2019. Congratulations, Sr. Mary Ann!

Nathan, Connor, and David’s everyday schedule consist of daily morning prayer, daily mass, Augustinian class, evening prayer followed by dinner. They are currently serving as a Ministry of presence at St. Rita High School where they are involved in helping out with the school band, campus ministry, religion classes, academic support, and chess team.

Looking back over the 65 year of service Fr. Fred Taggart during his 65 years in the Order, one finds an example of selfless dedication to community that is truly worth celebrating. Few friars of our Province have travelled as widely and as frequently between assignments and communities. We are confident that many of our readers in Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, Racine, Tulsa, and elsewhere will be delighted to learn of this opportunity to celebrate a man whose service they have witnessed firsthand.

The vocation of Fr. Fred was first cultivated by the Augustinian friars at St. Matthew Parish in Detroit, where he attended elementary school and received his Confirmation. He continued on for two years at our Province’s former Austin Catholic High School before transferring to St. Augustine Seminary in Holland, MI, where he graduated in 1956.

He professed simple vows to the Order a year later, at the age of 19, and sol-

emn, lifelong vows in 1960. He began collegiate studies in 1957 at Immaculate Conception Seminary in northwest Missouri. After one year there, the Augustinian formation program relocated to the newly opened Tolentine College in Olympia Fields, IL. There he completed his undergraduate studies, earning his Bachelors in Philosophy in 1961. He continued with graduate theological studies at Tolentine and Augustinian Academy in St. Louis and was ordained a priest of the Augustinian Order in 1965.

Following his ordination, Fr. Fred took his first assignment as a Math teacher at Chicago’s Mendel Catholic High School. After four years there, he was transferred to teach at his own alma mater, Austin Catholic in Detroit.

He moved in 1976 to St. Augustine Seminary, where he continued teaching and became a member of the Province’s Formation Team. When the Augustinian minor seminary program relocated in 1977 to St. Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee, Fr. Fred moved along with it.

About 33 of those years were in teaching, and then the ones that were not in teaching were in some contact from time to time with some of the students that were going to Cascia Hall after I had retired.”

For this year’s Gala we have chosen to honor posthumously a friar whose decades of teaching shaped the minds and souls of young men and women at St. Rita High School and Cascia Hall Prep. Fr. John Gaffney, O.S.A. was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1919. After graduating from St. Leo High School in Ashley, PA, in 1937, he worked for a short time as a grocery clerk and eventually found his way to entering the Augustinian formation program.

Stone Friary in Chicago, teaching parttime at Mendel Catholic. After earning his Certificate in Formative Studies and M. A. in Formative Spirituality in 1983, Fr. Fred was assigned to St. Nicholas of Tolentine Monastery, in Olympia Fields, to direct the Province Renewal Team and serve as Adult Vocations Director.

He returned to his home state in 1987 when he was assigned to the position of Pastor at St. Peter Parish in Douglas, MI. He became Pastor of St. Clare of Montefalco Parish, Grosse Pointe Park, MI, in 1989. In 1995 he was appointed Pastor of St. Matthew Church, Flint, Michigan. While remaining Pastor of St. Matthew, Fr. Fred took on the appointment of canonical Pastor of St. Michael Parish in Flint, where he remained until his semiretirement in 2015.

He continued to serve his Province following retirement as he once again joined the Formation team as part of the Novitiate community, then located at St. Rita Parish in Racine, WI. Following the transfer of the Novitiate to Villanova, Fr. Fred moved to Bl. Stephen Bellesini Friary, Crown Point, IN.

John became an Augustinian Novice in 1938 and professed his first religious vows one year later; he solemnly professed his perpetual vows on September 10, 1942. He proceeded to earn a Bachelors in Philosophy from present-day Villanova University in 1942 and a Masters in English Literature from Catholic University of America in 1946. Amidst these studies, he was also ordained a priest in the year 1945.

Father Gaffney was assigned in 1946 to St. Rita High School in Chicago as a teacher for eight years. He also served as the Director of Novices for two years from 1962 to 1964. However, he devoted the majority of his active ministry to Tulsa’s Cascia Hall community.

Fr. Gaffney served at Cascia Hall from both 1954 to 1962 and from 1964 to his retirement in 1989. That means an incredible total of 33 years of service to the Cascia Hall Community! Many of those in the Cascia Hall Community - our students, parents, teachers, and faculty - can tell profound stories of how Fr. Gaffney impacted their lives. Some of the other students that Fr. Gaffney taught went on to become upstanding leaders in society. More importantly, he has brought hundreds (if not thousands) of them closer to knowing God. At our April Gala, we look forward to showcasing a few of these testimonials.

His impact on the campuses of St. Rita and Cascia were not simply felt from the classroom, but also from his fervent reverence for the Mass. Father Gaffney often shared with his brothers his favorite quotation, which was posted in a Carmelite convent where he once served: “Celebrate this Mass as if it were your only Mass, your first Mass, and your last Mass.”

Father Gaffney has lived out this commandment for years, and he shared this spirituality with scores of students that have attended Cascia Hall over the years.

He retired from teaching in 2012, but remained a fixture in the Tulsa community. After being transferred to the Montereau Retirement Community, Fr. John passed away in 2019. We look forward to hearing from the many individuals whose souls have been formed by the words and example of this incredible man.

to Bishop McNabb even before their own family!

Ed & Catharine Hennessy The Hennessys share a family history with the Augustinians of over 100 years, dating back to 1920 when Ed Hennessy’s grandfather, Bernard Hennessy immigrated to America from Kildare County Ireland. Upon Bernard’s arrival on the east coast, he first found work and residence with the Augustinians on the Villanova College farm. The assistance from these friars eventually allowed him to move to Chicago where he began a family and raised 10 children.

Leo Hennessy, Ed’s father, became a teacher and coach at Mendel Catholic, where he formed a close bond with Fr. John McNabb, O.S.A. (later to become Bishop McNabb, of Chulucanas). Ed remembers from a young age how his parents, Leo and Helen, hosted Bishop McNabb in their home, as he became a friend and spiritual mentor to the family. In fact, when Leo and Helen got engaged, they brought the good news

When Bishop McNabb was assigned to serve in the Midwest Province’s missions in Chulucanas, Peru, Leo and Helen organized a group of supporters. Over a period of 40 years, Leo, Helen, and their friends threw “Chulucanas Mission Club” fundraisers to support Bishop John McNabb. Ed and his brothers and sisters were on hand at every fundraiser and assisted in all jobs. Eventually, Ed and his brothers and sisters began to throw a second party every year that they called the Bishop’s Bash fundraiser, consisting of the children of those who began the Chulucanas Mission Club.

Ed Hennessy, one of seven children of Leo and Helen, is a graduate of Quigley South High School and Northern Illinois University. Following college, he studied at Cooley Law School in Michigan, graduating with his J.D. in 1993.

He then began to practice law with his brother Tom and his law partner, Jim Roach at Hennessy & Roach Law Firm, where he became partner in 1999.

In 1994, Ed met his wife Catharine Mullen who was Bill and Marie Mullen’s second of seven children. Catharine was born and spent the majority of her grade school years in the Philadelphia area. Catharine’s aunt and uncle are both graduates of Villanova University.

Her mother’s first cousin, Fr. Frank Anastasi, was a priest and teacher at Villanova until he left to care for his elderly mother. Catharine first came to Illinois

when her father received a job transfer to Chicago in 1982. When Catharine met Ed, she was a graduate of Illinois State University and Chicago Kent Law School who was practicing law as a Labor and Employment attorney for the City of Chicago. She served as Assistant Commissioner with the City of Chicago’s Department of Streets and Sanitation from 2008 to 2021.

Catharine became involved with the Chulucanas Mission Club when she and Ed were first dating. In 1995, Bishop McNabb celebrated the wedding mass for Ed and Catharine Hennessy, just as he had with Ed’s parents 39 years before. After they were married, Ed and Catharine remained committed and involved in the planning and running of the Chulucanas Mission Club Fundraiser. Catharine organized and ran the silent auction for the fundraiser for five of the last years it was held.

In recognition of their generous support of the Midwest Augustinians, Ed and Catharine were invited to join the Province’s Advancement Council in 2016. They helped the Advancement office through two successful capital campaigns and were chairs of the 2016 Augustinian Gala Committee. Our regular Gala attendees will remember the outstanding work they did leading the fundraising appeal at our last in-person Gala in 2019! As we adapted to the pandemic and went virtual through 2021, it was again Catharine who volunteered to emcee our first Virtual Gala in April and our first Virtual Christmas party in December. On the Feast of St. Augustine, 2021, Prior Provincial Fr. Tony Pizzo, O.S.A. welcomed in the couple as Affiliates of the Augustinian Order.

a secondary major in Humanities, and a minor in Music. Service was essential to every aspect of my experience there. It directed my vocation to be a physician, and my leadership in the Villanova Band and Service Learning Community were rooted in a desire to give back.

While preparing for Medical School, I was informed that many students chose to take a “gap year.” I initially dismissed the idea, not wanting to delay my education.

As I got more involved in service, however, I met Kelsey Rode, a graduate student at Villanova. She had just completed the Augustinian Volunteer Program, and talking with her about that experience slowly turned my heart. One day I realized that I had already made up my mind.

HOW I CAME TO LIVE WITH THE AUGUSTINIANS AT CASCIA HALL

write to you from the Augustinian monastery at Cascia Hall Preparatory School in Tulsa, OK, where I am spending a year in service and prayer with the friars as I apply to medical schools. This experience has only just been formulated by Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. whom I encountered as a student on the campus of Villanova University. Thus far, it has been an incredibly enriching opportunity, full of wonderful people and moments of growth, and I hope that others may take this same path after me.

Before I get too carried away, however, I should probably talk a bit more about who I am. I grew up in Rochester, Michigan. There, I attended Holy Family Regional School, then Notre Dame Preparatory High School. It was this solid foundation of Catholic education that cultivated a love for service. I then attended Villanova University, where I obtained my degree in Biochemistry,

Crucially, however, I was not going to take this year of service because it would benefit my admission to medical school. I didn’t decide to do it because I thought I could change the world. I didn’t decide to do it to pat myself on the back and elevate how I thought of myself. I decided to do it because that was what God was calling me to do. I decided to do it because that’s who I am; service orients my life.

Why did I choose this path from among the many opportunities available to me? I chose it because of my love for the Augustinian community, especially my time spent with Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. and Fr. Bernie Scianna, O.S.A. The first time I met Fr. Tom was when he walked past me in the grotto at Villanova reading Augustine’s Confessions.

He quipped that I looked like I was straight out of an advertisement for Villanova, probably even more so when the two of us got to talking. After that I met Fr. Bernie through his nephew, and one of my best friends, Trevor Scianna. I continued to get to know him over my time at Villanova, as he would take our friend group (the “Jackson 5”) out to dinner. He quickly became a role model in my life.

Eventually, Fr. Tom came to Fr. Bernie with his idea for this service experience, and Father Bernie recommended me, since he knew I wanted to do a year of service. Fr. Tom reached out and we started to come up with what the experience would look like. I would live in community with the Augustinians as Cascia Hall, serve in Campus Ministry, help out wherever I was needed in the school, and have flexibility to engage in clinical experiences, if possible.

I decided to do it because that was what God was calling me to do.

I decided to do it because that’s who I am; service orients my life. time was a challenge, but once the class hit a rhythm it was wonderful. I was blessed to have a class that really engaged with the questions being asked; it allowed us to dig deep into different ethical paradigms and their differences, as well as tackle some difficult case studies. I am currently teaching a full course in tandem with Bonnie Leighty, Speech II, which is centered on teaching rhetorical skills with an orientation to service and activism. This course asks students to engage in productive dialogue with each other about difficult issues, hopefully fostering a skill that will last a lifetime.

Having the ability to craft this experience around my strengths has enabled me to really get the most out of the year. The first thing I mention when people ask about this experience is how wonderful the people are here in the Cascia Hall Community. I felt immediately welcomed and embraced, with so many people excited to help me find my place in the school, an already well-functioning machine.

There are no “normal” weeks in my time so far, but there is almost always something that needs to be done, so I help lighten the load for many different people. My service opportunities have included the following: I am the faculty advisor for the Green Team (the environmental club); I have helped with freshman, sophomore, and 8th grade retreats; assisted Gemma Booth with Cognia School Certification; helped the pep band at football games and pep rallies; assisted with the Science Research program; and I was a faculty team member on Kairos 114. It has been an honor to be a small part of such a loving and uplifting community.

Living in community with Fr. Stephen, Br. Nick, and Fr. Philip has been such an incredible privilege. Their kindness and inclusion of me has made this experience one of a kind.

I join them for morning prayer, dinner, and evening prayer every day, and this daily rhythm has greatly enhanced my prayer life and offers a consistency that I find heartening.

Taking this gap year in such a busy time in my life has also allowed me to take a moment to breathe and reflect, continuing my intellectual/spiritual journey through more reading and discussion with friends.

I am so grateful to have had this experience, and it would not be possible without so many different people who have helped it come to fruition. I would like to especially thank my parents, who never for a second hesitated to allow me to take this year to serve. Fr. Tony Re-Elected as Prior Provincial

he Midwest Augustinian Province of Our Mother of Good Council has re-elected incumbent Prior Provincial, Very Rev. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A. for a second four-year term of service. This term will begin during the Provincial Chapter this upcoming June, when Fr. Pizzo will formally be re-installed by the Prior General of the Augustinian Order. Fr. Pizzo was first elected to the position of Prior Provincial during the 2018 Provincial Chapter. According to the Canons of the Augustinian Order, Prior Provincials are chosen by a simple majority through a democratic election in which each solemnly professed friar has an equal vote, with the option to abstain.

As Prior Provincial, Fr. Pizzo will continue to oversee all the activities of the Augustinians in the Midwestern United States, Canada, and Northern Peru, while maintaining his primary offices at the Province headquarters in the Beverly neighborhood on Chicago’s Southwest Side. Prior to his election, Fr. Tony served for over a decade as Pastor of St. Rita Parish in Chicago (and Dean of Vicariate V-A), a predominantly Spanishspeaking parish, where he gained recognition for his commitment to comprehensive immigration reform with organizations such as Priests for Justice for Immigrants and the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Pastoral Migratoria ministry.

In collaboration with Southwest Organizing Project and its member institutions, he also participated in affordable housing efforts, neighborhood safety issues and health care for low income families. A native of Chicago’s Southwest Side, Fr. Pizzo was educated at St. Rene Goupil Parish elementary school and continued to JFK High School, before discerning a vocation with the Augustinians and attaining his undergraduate degree at Villanova University. He professed his vows to the Order in 1979 and received his Master of Divinity from the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago. In 1984, he was ordained to the priesthood in 29184

by Cardinal Joseph Bernadin, receiving his first assignment as Parochial Vicar for St. Clare of Montefalco Parish in Michigan. A grandson of Italian immigrants, Fr. Pizzo also serves as Chaplain for the Italian America Executives of Transportation.

Un Mensaje del Padre Tony Pizzo Queridos amigos de los agustinos,

Incluso cuando nuestros planes están hechos por uno mismo y están creados de buena voluntad y con espíritu generoso, es posible que estos no sean los planes de Dios. Debemos permanecer abiertos a tal posibilidad. Esta es una lección que recordé recientemente.

Cuando fui elegido por primera vez para el cargo de prior provincial en 2018, tuve que enfrentarme a un modo de servicio diferente. Aunque me entristeció dejar mi ministerio como párroco de la parroquia Santa Rita, consideré que este nuevo rol de liderazgo contribuiría a desarrollar nuevas habilidades para servir a la Orden ya la Iglesia en general. Esta transición fue especialmente conmovedora porque tuve que alejarme de muchos años de ministerio al alcance de poblaciones vulnerables a las que estaba acostumbrado. Si bien el ministerio sacerdotal es un gran don dondequiera que se ejerza, mi ministerio sacerdotal encontró la realización acompañando a la comunidad inmigrante y atendiendo las inquietudes del vecindario.

Así, fue con gran alegría que celebramos el pasado mes de diciembre las ordenaciones sacerdotales del p. Joe Roccasalva, O.S.A. y el p. Agustinos del Medio Oeste tuvieron la bendición de dar la bienvenida a tres prenovicios La formación agustiniana comienza con un “prenoviciado” de un año, cuando un hombre que discierne una vocación vive en una comunidad agustina y se le presenta la regla agustiniana y las constituciones de la Orden. A medida que el prenovicio sigue discerniendo su vocación, participa y comparte la vida comunitaria; reserva tiempo para la Misa y la oración, así como para otros eventos sociales. Una vez completados los requisitos del prenoviciado, el equipo de formación provincial evalúa la preparación del candidato para avanzar al programa de noviciado de un año.

En 2021, Los Agustinos del Medio Oeste tuvieron la bendición de dar la bienvenida a tres prenovicios a nuestra comunidad recién establecida en el monasterio de St. Clare. El padre Ray Flores se desempeña como director del prenoviciado, que es el paso inicial en la formación agustiniana, en el que los hombres son introducidos por primera vez a nuestra vida comunitaria y espiritualidad.

Nathan Fernandes, de Toronto, Canadá, Connor Fitzmaurcie, de Columbia, Missouri, y David Marshall, de Dayton, Ohio, se están preparando mentalmente y espiritualmente para la vocación del sacerdocio agustino.

Nathan Fernandes asistió a la Universidad de Toronto donde recibió una licenciatura en Psicología. Poco después, asistió al Seminario de la Arquidiócesis de Toronto durante cinco años y también recibió un diploma culinario de George Brown College.

Mientras asistía al Seminario de la Arquidiócesis de Toronto, Nathan se enfermó de la enfermedad de Crohn.

Después de recuperarse de su cirugía, se tomó tiempo libre del seminario para concentrarse en su salud psicológica y espiritual.
