LETTER FROM THE PRIOR PROVINCIAL DEAR FRIENDS OF THE AUGUSTINIANS, I pray that my letter finds you well and starting the Easter Season with hope. Christ is with us! And very soon we will be with one another! Hope is always operative in our mutual respect and appreciation of one another. For some, this pandemic has pushed hope to its limits, but it also has taught us about the importance of our interdependence on one another and what truly matters in life. We need to move forward even in the midst of these limitations.

We should be encouraged by the progress made thus far, even as the figures on infection and death rates are still oscillating daily. I am happy to say that all of our friars in Senior Care have received both their vaccinations, and they have many encouraging signs of returning to normal life. As an example, our friars in Assisted Living and Skilled Care were able to celebrate the Easter Liturgy together in their chapel at St. Anthony Village.

The tragic losses that remain in the wake of this pandemic will take many years for us to process. This February we lost a beloved, resilient friar, Fr. Jim Thompson, O.S.A., to complications resulting from COVID-19. As many of you know, Fr. Jim was a chaplain for many years at Little of Company of Mary Hospital, overcoming the limitations of his own blindness.

Fr. Thompson had been planned as an honoree for our Augustinian Gala for the past two years. We are heartbroken that we did not have the chance to celebrate his ministry publicly before he passed. However, I am confident that we will honor his memory properly at the upcoming virtual Gala. This past year, 2020, we had to cancel our in-person gala. It would have been our ninth. This was our only major annual fundraising event in the Province. It brought together close to 400 people and allowed us to show what it means to be Augustinian, to honor some well deserving people, and to raise funds to support our Province’s work: In forming Augustinians, attracting more vocations, caring for our retired and infirm men, and for our missions among the rural poor of Peru.

Normally, our gala raised up to $200,000 for our ministry in a single night. That did not happen in 2020, and given COVID, it will not happen this year. Our men and ministries suffer for this lack of funds.

After eight successful annual galas at the Drake Hotel in Chicago, the pandemic had forced us into a new way of thinking. Either we adapt and thrive or stay where we were. Staying as we did eight years, from 2012 to 2019, was not an option. I am sure this pandemic has had the same impacts on you. With almost eight centuries under our belt as an Order of the Church, we Augustinians are no strangers to change, adaptation, and flexibility.

So, I ask you please to join us in our first ever virtual fundraising event, 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Central Time, Thursday, April 29, 2021. There is no cost to attend. Fr. Jim Thompson, O.S.A. † Profiled by CBS as the “Wounded Healer” of Chicago, Fr. Jim served as hospital chaplain at Little Company of Mary from 1997 to 2017, all while struggling with his own blindness. The majority of Fr. Jim’s service was in the formation of new friars, serving as director of theologians, director of novices, and director of pre- and post-novitiate students. Sadly, we lost Fr. Jim nearly two months ago after his health deteriorated rapidly—we look forward to the opportunity to honor him now.

Fr. Daniel Hartigan, O.S.A.† A preeminent figure of Catholic education in Chicago, Fr. Dan received his first active assignment in 1946 to teach mathematics at St. Rita of Cascia High School. When Mendel Catholic opened in 1951, he became one of its founding faculty members. In 1960, he was named superintendent of schools for the Augustinian Secondary School System. From 1963 to 1968, while continuing to serve as superintendent, Fr. Dan also served as principal of Mendel Catholic.

Robert Sullivan A graduate of Cascia Hall Preparatory Academy, Class of 1963, Robert was affiliated to the Augustinian Order in 1994 and served as a member of the Province Advancement Council from 2011 to 2019. He founded both Lumen Energy Corp. and Sullivan & Co. and for over 40 years, he has served as chairman of five school boards, including Cascia Hall. In 2012, the Diocese of Tulsa gave Robert and his family the St. Francis of Assisi Award for supporting Catholic education.

Mark Hacker A graduate of St. Rita of High School Class of 1990, Mark Hacker provides an inspiring example of what it means to be a “Ritaman.” Following graduation, Mark went on to attend Villanova University, where he met his wife Mindy, and earned both his Bachelors and Juris Doctor degrees. Mark has always been a generous supporter of his alma maters and served as a member of the Province Advancement Council from 2011 to 2019. In 2001, Mark began working for Motorola and was named General Counsel in 2013.

S

everal years ago, I was at St. Jude in New Lenox, waiting in line for Confession. And if you've ever been there, there's a small daily mass chapel, with its own small altar. And so the line for confession crosses that altar. I remember it was a long line and we were all waiting along this perimeter of the small chapel. Now I was behind a mom and her five-year-old daughter, and I noticed that she was looking intently at the altar. She was a little shorter than the altar, so she got on her tippy toes, looked at the white linen cloths on the altar, and, with the innocence of a child, she asked her mom, "Is that where Jesus goes, Mommy?"

Now I don't know what her mom said, but what faith that little girl showed to me. “Mom, is that where Jesus goes”? Well, yes, it is. It is where Jesus goes. Our faith enlightens us to believe that this bread and wine become the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of the Risen Lord, Jesus Christ. The Lord of the Universe. Only by faith can we believe this, because our senses tell us that it's just bread up there. It's just wine. But faith reveals to us that God is hidden. He is really, truly present in the form of food. The bread from heaven. And he is present in such a way that we don't say the bread of Christ, but the Body of Christ. Even though it tastes like bread, smells like bread, and looks like bread.

So yes, this is where Jesus goes, the Risen Lord of the Universe. But He is on the altar not to stay there, but to be received by us in Holy Communion. He wants to commune with us. He longs to be one with us through this sacrament: “the two shall become one.” And so as we make our way to the promised land, he makes his home in us. He goes to us. Not only on the altar of wood or stone, but in the altar of our hearts, our very bodies. He makes his home with us in an even more powerful way than he did 2000 years ago. It's only after his death and resurrection that Jesus becomes even more intimately present to us in the gift of the Eucharist.

Now the risen, victorious Lord Jesus makes his home with us in the company of the angels, the saints and our loved ones who have gone before us to the Lord. In the Eucharist, the Lord makes his home with us in such a way that he shares his divine life with us. We become his body in a unique way by our receiving of his body. It sounds pretty crazy, I know, but let me tell you a little story…

There was a persecution of the Church in the third century in Rome, under the Roman emperor Valerian. And there was a 12-yearold acolyte, an altar server named Tarcisius. He was at Mass with a group of other Christians in the catacombs of Saint Callixtus, in Rome. So after the mass, the priest asked one of them to bring the Eucharist secretly, for fear of persecution, to imprisoned Christians in Rome who were waiting to be killed for being a Christian.

One Bread,

One Body

And so, Tarcisius, hearing this invitation of the Priest, exclaims, "Send me, send me." And the priest was very impressed by his courage and entrusted the Eucharist to him. So Tarcisius sent off and on his way he met some friends who approached him. They asked him to join them. Now, his friends were pagans, which means that they follow the Roman religion.

And when Tarcisius refused to join them, because he had to bring the Eucharist to the imprisoned Christians, they were a little suspicious. They insisted that he join them. And then they realized that he was clasping something to his chest. Something that he appeared to be protecting. So in vain, they tried to pry it from his hands.

They finally realized that this Tarcisius was a Christian. And when they realized that, the struggle became ever fiercer. They kicked him, threw stones at him, but this young man did not surrender. As the little acolyte was dying on the ground, he was still clutching to his chest the small linen bag that was holding the blessed sacrament. Later, the dead body of Saint Tarcisius was brought to the priest, and when the priest is looking at his body, he interestingly sees that the blessed sacrament was not to be found.

It wasn't on his body. It wasn't in his hands or in his clothing. Rather the consecrated host that the little martyr had defended with his life had become flesh of his flesh. Forming with his body, a single immaculate host offered to God. The Blessed Sacrament had become formed to his body. His body had become this sacrament. Now this story of Saint Tarcisius illustrates for us a fundamental truth about the Eucharist, which is that we become Jesus's Body in a very strong way. In fact, our Baptism has already incorporated us into his body. We already are part of his body. Communion renews, strengthens, and deepens this incorporation into the church already achieved in Baptism. In Baptism we've been called to form one body, the body of Christ, and the Eucharist fulfills this call of initiation into communion, again and again. We respond, "Amen," and we receive the body of Christ.

Saint Augustine, many years ago, preached, "Be then a member of the body of Christ, that your amen may be true." Jesus truly makes his home with us and then we make our home with him. We live, as St. Augustine invited us, to be a member of the body of Christ. We live with faith, hope and love. Basing our conduct on the gospel and on the dignity of the human person. Now this is a two way street, he makes his home in us, and we welcome him. That is our Lenten invitation tonight. Jesus is looking for a home, he is homesick, he desperately longs to be one with us. To the extent that he chose to be with us to the end of the world in the blessed sacrament. And to be received by us, to form us into his body, like Saint Tarcisius. In the words of that little girl at St. Jude, "Is this where Jesus goes?" He goes to the craziest, most unthinkable level to love us. He becomes our food and our drink.

Here are a few articles from the newspaper of the former St. Augustine's Seminary in Holland, Michigan, SPES ORDINIS.

Vocation Club Planned

by Rev. F.J. Cavanaugh, O.S.A. Provincial The hope of our Order is that it serves the Church in whatever capacity it is able. This involves many things and many people in order to reap the harvest that is everywhere apparent throughout the world.

It stands to reason that without Religious, it is quite impossible for us to meet this challenge. Our consuming interest for many years ahead is to increase the size of our Minor Seminary. …

As Provincial, when I was asked to write an article for the Spes Ordinis it seemed to me a good opportunity to suggest a few things that you fine gentlemen could do in order to assist the Province that is prepared to accept you as its members when your training is completed.

The first thing I would suggest that you do is form a kind of seminary club to promote vocations. You would be surprised how much effect you can have, if, when you go home at Christmas, Easter, and during the Summer time, you made a serious seffort to speak to your friends, relatives and acquaintances about the need for vocations. It does seem that if you find this life worthwhile, the least you could do in appreciation to the Order is to seek to enlist some of the best boys you know. Certainly, each boy could pursue and secure one vocation for next year. If you will do this, I would consider it the best Christmas present any Provincial could receive.

The second thing, I would propose a Missionary Society. It would be well if there were special prayers and some kinds of meetings for all of the students to promote the Missions.

We are about to take over a Prelature in South America and since this is such a heavy burden to the Province, we should like to enlist the support of all of our seminarians.

Begin the “Long Haul” - Unattributed “Thought I would never make it through this Lent. That getting up at six o’clock sharp was rough, but now it is all over,” said Tom Christian.

“Yea, now I can take it easy too! I stopped complaining during Lent, but now I am ready to start beefing again,” replied John Soft.

Lent is over! God’s promise is almost fulfilled.

On Easter Sunday our joy will rise with the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Lent is over! But what about those Lenten penances? Will your penance be like a thermostat— turning it on only when you need it or at certain times? Will you be another Tom Christian or John Soft—quitting when the calendar says March 29th? Will you continue your semi-annual ritual— practicing penance only during Advent or Lent?

The Church gives us the season of Lent as a trial or practice period. We decide on some penance— usually positive—and practice it for forty days.

There are no strings attached. After the forty days are over, we can return it and lose nothing. But once we return it, we will not benefit from it. Why not practice this Lenten penance for life?

They say that a person must use a new word thirty-five times before it becomes a part of his vocabulary. We get forty days. After forty days of repetition, this Lenten penances is ours if we want it. [...]

You have eight to twelve years before you become a priest. On that day, the Holy Spirit will neither change your entire personality nor your bad habits.

You have sixteen to twenty-four opportunities to do something about it. Remember the long haul which Father Geaney mentioned. Remember the newspaper column containing the definition of maturity: “Maturity is many things. First it is the ability to base a judgment on the Big Picture—The Long Haul…Maturity is the ability to stick with a project or a situation until it is finished…”

Remember your bad habits and lack of good habits will not be altered on the day of ordination.

You must improve yourself slowly by taking advantage of the free offers from the Church.

Continue your Lenten penances until your project is finished. And only God knows when your project on earth is finished.

Seal Shows Hope, Charity - Unattributed Battered by thrashing waves, a galleon in port holds fast in a storm— her anchor digs into the sand. The fiercer the storm becomes, the deeper the anchor sets itself. The crew’s hope is placed in the galleon’s anchor.

We, the staff of the Spes Ordinis— “Hope of the Augustinian Order”— have chosen the anchor as the first part of our emblem. As we learn to grow in Christlike love at St. Augustine’s Seminary, we are, in the truest sense, “the hope of the Order.”

The Augustinian Order has shown, in a very graphic way, how much hope is placed in us. It expresses this hope in constructing the new million-dollar structure of Hickey Hall.

The Heart: Christ-like, burning love—St. Augustine has left us this heritage in his many volumes of writings. The second elements of our emblem expresses such love by a flaming heart.

Love motivated St. Augustine to abandon a life of sin and embrace a life of perfection, a life of self-sacrificing love. We too, in aspiring to the priesthood, need a flaming heart to carry us thru the nine or more years of preparation. On one great day in the future we will receive that special sign of Christ’s love for us—the Augustinian priesthood.

Three Ordained to Diaconate at St. Jude

I

n a sign of great blessings to come in 2021, the Augustinians opened the year with the ordination of three friars into the Order of Deacon. Deacon Sam Joutras, O.S.A. of the Midwest Province was joined by Deacons Bill Gabriel, O.S.A. and Jeremy Hiers O.S.A. from the Villanova Province for the January 16th celebration at St. Jude Parish in New Lenox, presided by Bishop Daniel Conlon.

“It is a great honor for me to be able to come here and exercise my Episcopal Ministry through the Sacrament of Holy Orders,” spoke Bishop Conlon, “but in these few moments that we share together, what I do is only a small part of what happens, because when these men are ordained deacons, my action is then multiplied through their service. And what they do, through the grace of the Holy Spirit, is then multiplied in the lives of the people that they touch.”

The Ordination liturgy was also somewhat of a coming home for Dcn. Sam. After his family moved to New Lenox in 2006, Br. Sam attended Providence Catholic High School and St. Jude Parish, both of which brought him into contact with the Augustinian Order, and a vision of a life lived in fraternal community. “I saw how joy-filled they were,” he remembers, “and that impression stuck with me later on.” He has now begun his first pastoral assignment at the parish under Pastor Fr. Robert Basler, O.S.A., as he awaits his Priesthood Ordination this June.

Given that the remainder of their graduate coursework at the Catholic Theological Union was moved exclusively online, Dcns. Bill and Jeremy were also able to relocate to the East Coast and begin ministries in their home Province. Deacon Bill has begun serving at St. Thomas of Villanova Parish in Rosemont, PA and Dcn. Jeremy has begun serving as a deacon at St. Rita Shrine in Philadelphia, PA.

Reflecting on the Year of St. Joseph

I

f you're not yet aware, this year of 2021 is the Year of St. Joseph. As far as I know that's never been done in our Church.

And it's long overdue. I was so happy when Pope Francis, very soon after his Papacy began, made a decree that St. Joseph's name was to be added to every Eucharistic prayer that we pray at Mass.

Now we hear his name at every Mass, as we pray in communion with Mary, our Blessed Mother and for Joseph, her chaste spouse. Because Mary couldn't do it alone.

She had Joseph. And so during this Year of St. Joseph as we ask him to accompany us for our journey to Christ. If you stop and think about Joseph, first of all you must always remember, he was a normal human being just like us. Mary was the one who was conceived without sin. Joseph was not. Joseph was conceived just like us with sin. He was a normal person chosen to do wonderful and extraordinary things.

One of my absolute favorite images of the Holy Family is at the Shrine Chapel at St. Rita High School. It's a floor to ceiling window that shows Joseph at the carpenter's bench with an apron, with all the tools, you see the wood shavings all over. Mary is right there in the background dressed as the homemaker taking care of her two men, and Jesus is there and He looks to be a boy of about 11 or 12. He too has an apron up. His father is showing Him how to work with the tools of the trade. And to me, friends, that's what the Holy Family was like.

Now, nothing against the beautiful images or statues we have of the Holy Family. But, like most of us, I don't belong

to a family that just sits there folding their hands adoring each other. And if you do, that's pretty good. But probably most of us are more like that image: doing what we do as a family. Children always try to do what dad is doing. So Jesus was learning how to be a carpenter, because that's what his dad did.

Reflexión sobre el Año de San José Por Fr. Tom McCarthy, O. S. A.

S

i aún no lo sabe, este año 2021 es el Año de San José. Por lo que sé, eso nunca se había hecho en nuestra iglesia. Y debió haber pasado desde hace mucho tiempo.

Me sentí muy feliz cuando el Papa Francisco, muy poco después de que comenzara su Papado, decretó que el nombre de San José se agregaría a cada Oración Eucarística que rezamos en la Misa.

Ahora, escuchamos su nombre en cada Misa, orando en comunión con María, Nuestra Madre Santísima y por José, su casto esposo. Porque María no podía hacerlo sola. Tenía a José. Y así, durante este Año de San José, le pedimos que nos acompañe en nuestro camino hacia Cristo. Si se

detienen a pensar en José, primero que nada, deben siempre recordar que él era un ser humano normal como nosotros. María fue la que fue concebida sin pecado. José no. José fue concebido como nosotros con el pecado. Era una persona normal que fue elegida para hacer cosas maravillosas y extraordinarias.

Una de mis imágenes favoritas de la Sagrada Familia está en la Capilla del Santuario de St. Rita High School.

Es una ventana del piso al techo que muestra a José en el banco de carpintero con un delantal, con todas las herramientas, se pueden ver las virutas de madera por todas partes.

María está allí en el fondo vestida como la ama de casa cuidando de su

hombre verdadero, y Jesús está allí y Él parece ser un niño de unos 11 o 12 años. Y Él también tiene un delantal.

Y su padre le está mostrando cómo trabajar con las herramientas del oficio.

Y María está ahí. Y para mí, amigos, así es como era la Sagrada Familia.

Ahora, no tengo nada en contra de las bellas imágenes o estatuas que tenemos de la Sagrada Familia.

Pero, como la mayoría de nosotros, no pertenezco a una familia que se queda ahí cruzados de manos adorándose unos a otros. Y si ustedes lo hacen, eso está bastante bien.

Pero probablemente la mayoría de nosotros somos más como esa imagen: haciendo lo que hacemos como familia. Los niños siempre

tratan de hacer lo que su padre está haciendo. Así que Jesús estaba aprendiendo a ser carpintero, porque eso era lo que hacía su padre. Sin embargo, lo hermoso de esta imagen es que tiene todas las herramientas y las virutas de madera, pero también hay un libro abierto en el suelo. Las escrituras. Porque, ¿qué más hacía Jesús? Recuerden que Él era rabino.

Rabino significa maestro. A Él se le enseñó a ser, o estaba aprendiendo a ser, un maestro de la fe. Así que Jesús no solo hacía el trabajo manual, sino que también hacía el trabajo espiritual.

Y nos enseña a hacer lo mismo.

El 1ro. de mayo celebramos la fiesta de San José Obrero. Y José nos da un gran ejemplo de la dignidad del trabajo — de lo bueno que es trabajar. Sea cual sea nuestro trabajo. Para ustedes, padres, su trabajo es ser padres. Ya sea que trabajen con sus manos, ya sea que trabajen tal vez en una oficina con su mente, ya sea que trabajen en el hogar, no importa. Pero San José nos muestra la dignidad del trabajo. La dignidad de un buen día de trabajo duro por un buen día de paga. Esa hermosa imagen de la Sagrada Familia.

Por el tamaño del Niño Jesús en esta imagen, parece ser de la misma edad que cuando María y

José lo perdieron en el Templo. Tenía alrededor de doce años. ¿Recuerdan la historia? Lo buscaron por más de un día. Bueno, ustedes padres, alguna vez perdieron a su hijo en la tienda de comestibles y entraron en pánico, ¿verdad? ¿En dónde está él? ¿En dónde está ella? ¿Se imaginan cómo se sintieron durante todo un día? Y luego, cuando lo encontraron, de nuevo, podemos ver emociones normales. Y María le dijo: "¿Por qué? ¿Por qué nos hiciste esto? ¿Por qué nos dejaste?" Y Él les dijo: "Bueno, saben que tengo que estar con mi Padre".

Jesús estaba experimentando a la María y al José de las 12:30. Porque ellos también fueron los padres de las 12:01 a las 12:29 porque amaban a su hijo. Y eso es lo último que sabemos.

A partir de esa edad, de los 12 años, pasaron 18 años hasta el primer milagro de Jesús en las bodas de Caná. Y sabemos que la historia dice, hubo una boda en Caná y Jesús y María fueron invitados. Lo que eso nos dice, indirectamente, es que en algún momento entre la edad de 12 y la edad de 30, José murió. No sabemos nada de su muerte, pero en algún momento de esos 18 años, murió, lo que significa que María y Jesús experimentaron la pérdida de un ser querido. Así que ellos

saben lo que es experimentar pérdidas.

Y de alguna manera lo superaron como todos lo hacemos. Con suerte, lo hicieron estando juntos y a través de su fe. Y entonces Jesús y María se convirtieron en familia. Y estoy seguro de que José siempre estuvo en su memoria.

Amigos, José es una de las personas más importantes en el Nuevo Testamento y nunca pronunció una palabra. ¿Lo sabían? Él nunca habla.

Lean todas las escrituras. Hablan de él y no en muchos lugares. Nunca dijo una palabra. Qué ejemplo para nosotros. Tal vez deberíamos ser personas que a veces no hablan. ¿Creen que Dios tal vez se dio cuenta?

Tal vez está tratando de decirnos que tenemos dos orejas y una boca. Tal vez se supone que debemos escuchar el doble de lo que hablamos. Porque si hacemos eso probablemente no nos meteremos en problemas. No diremos cosas estúpidas, algo que todos hacemos. José escuchaba y luego actuaba.

Y así como pasa este Año de San José, tal vez deberíamos seguir su ejemplo. ¿Cómo están dispuestos a escuchar? ¿Cómo están dispuestos a decir que sí? ¿Están dispuestos a cambiar?

ace varios años, estaba en St. Jude en New Lenox, esperando en la fila para la Confesión.

Y si alguna vez usted ha estado allí, hay una pequeña capilla diaria, Capilla de Misa diaria, con su propio altar pequeño. Y así la fila para la Confesión cruza ese altar. Recuerdo que era una fila larga y todos estábamos esperando a lo largo de este perímetro de la pequeña capilla. Ahora, yo estaba

detrás de una madre y su hija de cinco años, ella tal vez tenía cinco años, y me di cuenta de que ella estaba mirando atentamente al altar. Ella era un poco más baja que el altar, así que se puso de puntitas, miró los lienzos blancos en el altar. Y, con la inocencia de su niñez, le preguntó a su mamá, "¿ahí está Jesús, mamá?"

Ahora, no sé lo que le respondió su madre, pero qué fe me mostró esa niña. "Mamá, ¿ahí está Jesús"?

Bueno, sí, así es. Es donde está Jesús.

Nuestra fe nos ilumina para creer que este pan y vino se convierten en el cuerpo, la sangre, el alma y la divinidad del Señor Resucitado, Jesucristo.

allá arriba. Es solo vino. Pero la fe

nos revela que Dios está escondido. Él está en realidad, verdaderamente presente en forma de alimento. El pan del cielo. Y él está presente de tal manera que no decimos el pan de Cristo, sino el cuerpo de Cristo. A pesar de que sabe a pan, huele a pan y se ve como pan.

Así que sí, aquí es donde está Jesús, el Señor Resucitado del Universo. Pero él está en el altar no para quedarse allí, sino para ser recibido por nosotros en la Santa Comunión. Quiere comunicarse con nosotros. Anhela ser uno con nosotros a través de este sacramento: "los dos serán uno". Y así como nos dirigimos a la tierra prometida, el Señor hace su hogar en nosotros. Él va a nosotros. No solo en el altar de madera o piedra, sino en el altar de nuestros corazones, nuestros mismos cuerpos. Hace su hogar en nosotros de una manera aún más poderosa que la que hizo hace 2000 años. Él hizo su hogar en nosotros entonces, hace 2000 años, y es solo después de su muerte y resurrección que Jesús se hace aún más íntimamente presente con nosotros en el don de la Eucaristía.

Ahora el Resucitado y victorioso Señor Jesús hace su hogar en nosotros con la compañía de Los Ángeles, Los Santos y nuestros seres queridos que han ido antes que nosotros hacia el Señor. En la Eucaristía, el Señor hace su hogar con nosotros de tal manera que comparte con nosotros su vida divina. Nos convertimos en su cuerpo de una manera única al recibir su cuerpo. Suena bastante loco, lo sé, pero déjeme contarle una pequeña historia…

Hubo una persecución hacia la Iglesia en el siglo III en Roma, bajo el mandato del emperador romano Valeriano. Y había un acólito de 12 años, un monaguillo llamado Tarcisio. Él estaba en misa con un grupo de otros cristianos en las

catacumbas de San Calixto, en Roma. Así que después de la misa, el sacerdote le pidió a uno de ellos que llevara la Eucaristía en secreto, por temor a alguna acción, a los cristianos encarcelados en Roma que estaban esperando ser asesinados por ser cristianos.

Y así, Tarcisio, escuchando esta invitación del sacerdote, exclamó: "Envíeme, envíeme". Y el sacerdote quedó muy impresionado por su valentía y le confió la Eucaristía.

Así que Tarcisio se despidió y en su camino se encontró con algunos amigos que se le acercaron. Ellos le pidieron que los acompañara. Ahora, sus amigos eran paganos, lo que quiere decir que seguían la religión romana. Y cuando Tarsicio se negó a acompañarlos, porque tenía que llevar la Eucaristía a los cristianos encarcelados, levantó sospechas.

Ellos le insistieron para que los acompañara. Y entonces se dieron cuenta de que estaba sujetando algo hacia su pecho. Algo que parecía estar protegiendo. Así que, en vano, trataron de quitárselo de las manos.

Finalmente se dieron cuenta de que Tarcisio era cristiano. Y cuando se dieron cuenta de eso, la lucha se volvió cada vez más feroz. Lo patearon, le arrojaron piedras, pero este jovencito no se rindió. Mientras el pequeño acólito estaba muriendo en el suelo, todavía estaba sujetando hacia su pecho la pequeña bolsa de lino que sostenía el Santísimo Sacramento. Más tarde, el cadáver de San Tarcisio fue llevado al sacerdote, y cuando el sacerdote estaba mirando su cuerpo, curiosamente se dio cuenta de que el Santísimo Sacramento no estaba por ningún lado. No estaba en su cuerpo. No estaba en sus manos o en su ropa. En vez de eso, la hostia consagrada que el pequeño mártir había defendido con su vida se había hecho carne de su carne. Formando con su cuerpo, una sola hostia inmaculada ofrecida a Dios.

El Santísimo Sacramento se había formado a su cuerpo. Su cuerpo se había convertido en este sacramento.

Ahora bien, esta historia de San Tarcisio nos ilustra una verdad fundamental sobre la Eucaristía, que es que nos convertimos fuertemente en el cuerpo de Jesús. De hecho, nuestro Bautismo ya nos ha incorporado a su cuerpo. Ya somos parte de su cuerpo. La Comunión renueva, fortalece y profundiza esta incorporación a la Iglesia ya realizada en el Bautismo. En el Bautismo hemos sido llamados a formar un solo cuerpo, el cuerpo de Cristo, y la Eucaristía cumple este llamado de iniciación a la Comunión, una y otra vez. Respondemos "Amén", y recibimos el cuerpo de Cristo.

Hace muchos años, San Agustín predicó: "Sed, pues, miembros del cuerpo de Cristo, para que vuestro Amén sea verdadero". Jesús realmente hace su hogar en nosotros y luego hacemos nuestro hogar con él. Vivimos, como nos invitó San Agustín, para ser miembros del cuerpo de Cristo. Vivimos con fe, esperanza y amor. Basando nuestra conducta en el evangelio y en la dignidad de la persona humana.

Ahora, esto es en ambos sentidos, él hace su hogar en nosotros, y le damos la bienvenida. Esa es nuestra Invitación de Cuaresma de esta noche. Jesús está buscando un hogar, está nostálgico, anhela desesperadamente ser uno con nosotros. En la medida en que eligió estar con nosotros hasta el fin del mundo en el Santísimo Sacramento.

Y para ser recibido por nosotros, para formarnos en su cuerpo, como San Tarcisio. En las palabras de esa niña en St. Jude, "¿ahí está Jesús?" Él va hasta al nivel más loco, más impensable para amarnos. Él se convierte en nuestro alimento y nuestra bebida.

Yet what's beautiful about this image is it has all the tools and the wood shavings in there, but there's also an open book on the ground. It's the scriptures. Because what else did Jesus do? Remember He was a rabbi. A rabbi means teacher. He was taught how to be, or He was learning how to be, a teacher of the faith. So not only did Jesus do the manual labor, but he also did the spiritual labor. And He teaches us to do the same.

On May 1st we celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. And Joseph gives us a great example of the dignity of work—of how good it is to work. Whatever our work is. For you parents, your work is being a parent.

Whether you work with your hands, whether you work maybe in an office with your mind, whether you work in the home, it doesn't matter. But St. Joseph shows us the dignity of work. The dignity of a good hard day's work for a good day's pay. That is a beautiful image of the Holy Family.

From the size of the child Jesus in this image, He looks to be around the same age as when Mary and Joseph lost him in the Temple. He was around twelve. Do you remember the story? They searched for Him for over a day.

Well, you parents, have you ever lost your child in the grocery store and we were panicking, right? Where is he? Where is she? Imagine how they felt for a whole day! And then when they found Him, again, we see normal emotions. And Mary said, "Why? Why did you do this to us? Why did you leave us?" And He says, "Well, you know I have to be with my Father."

And that's the last thing we know. From that age of 12, 18 years went by to Jesus's first miracle at the Wedding Feast at Cana. And we know the story goes, there was a wedding at Cana and Jesus and Mary were invited.

What that tells us, indirectly, is that at some point between the age of 12 and the age of 30, Joseph died. We don't know anything about his death, but sometime in that 18 years, he died, which meant that Mary and Jesus experienced the loss of a loved one. So they know what it's like to experience loss. And somehow they got through it like we all do. Hopefully they did it through their being together and through their faith. And then Jesus and Mary became the family. And I'm sure Joseph was always in their memory.

Friends, Joseph is one of the most important people in the New Testament and he never uttered a word. Did you know that? He never speaks. Read all the scriptures. He's talked about in not too many places.

He never spoke a word. What an example to us. Maybe we should be people who sometimes don't speak. Do you think that God maybe had an idea? You think He's trying to tell us something that we have two ears and one mouth. Maybe we're supposed to listen twice as much as we speak.

Because if we do that we probably won't get in trouble. We won't say stupid things which we all do. Joseph listened and then he acted.

Fr. James Thomson, O.S.A. entered into eternal life on February 25, 2021.

Fr. Edward J. Kersten, O.S.A. entered into eternal life on March 17, 2021.

Fr. Jim was born on February 12, 1944 in Chicago, IL. to John G. and Lucille (Lukosunas) Thompson. He graduated from St. Rita H.S. in 1958, going on to St. Augustine Minor Seminary, Holland, MI. He made his first Profession of Vows in 1963 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1971. His first assignment was as Assistant Pastor at St. Rita Parish, Chicago. From 1974 to 1977, he was a full-time student at Duquesne University. He was assigned in 1977 to Immaculate Conception/St. Henry Parish, St. Louis, Missouri, and was appointed Director of Novices. In 1982, he was assigned to St. John Stone Friary, Chicago, where he was director of theologians.

He returned in 1984 to Immaculate Conception/ St. Henry Parish, St. Louis, again serving as Director of Novices.Fr. Jim was named Coordinator of Continuing Care at Southdown Institute, Ontario in 1986. In 1995, he was appointed Director of Pre-Novitiate and Post-Novitiate Students. He was named Prior of the Augustinian community at St. John Stone Friary in 1997. He continued to reside at St. John Stone Friary, and serve as Chaplain at Little Company of Mary Hospital, Evergreen Park, IL, until July 2014, when he was named Prior of St. Augustine Friary, Chicago. In January 2020, he moved to St. John Stone Friary where he continued to be a spiritual mentor to the Professed friars at St. Augustine Friary.

Fr. Edward was born on September 27, 1929 in Cicero, IL. He was a 1947 graduate of St. Rita High School, Chicago, and was received into the Augustinian Novitiate in 1949. He made his first Profession of Vows in 1950 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1956. In 1958, Fr. Edward was assigned to St. Rita H.S. as a teacher. In 1961, he became a member of the Augustinian Mission Band, residing at St. Joseph Mission House, Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was named Prior in 1971.

The Mission Band directed spiritual retreats and conducted parish missions in various parts of the United States. When the Mission Band relocated in 1972 to St. Rita Monastery, Chicago, Father Kersten moved there. He continued his preaching ministry until 1975. In 1975, he was re-assigned to teach at St. Rita High School. In that same year, he was named Prior of St. Rita Monastery, Chicago. He became Pastor of St. Mary Church, Rockford, IL, in 1979 and served as Prior of the community there. He moved to St. Rita Church, Chicago, in 1992, serving as Associate Pastor. He was Prior of Bl. Stephen Bellesini Community, Racine, WI,--the site of the Augustinian Novitiate--from August, 2007 until June, 2010.
