LETTER FROM THE PRIOR PROVINCIAL DEAR FRIENDS OF THE AUGUSTINIANS, In a time like this, I am grateful for any opportunity to reach out and communicate, especially by letter. The circumstances of our lives are changing so rapidly, it is impossible for me to say what our daily lives will look like by the time this magazine reaches you. As I write now, I am closing the sixth week of the Easter Season and wait with anticipation for the Feast of the Pentecost, which also happens to be when the current shelter-in-place order in Illinois is set to expire.

However, I simply do not know if that will, or should, end up being the case.

Like all of yours, my family of Augustinian brothers has been greatly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic over the past months. At the Province level, the pandemic has placed particular strain on our ability to raise funds for our three major financial needs: 1) the care of our retired friars; 2) the education and formation of new Augustinians; and 3) our missions in Northern Peru. In mid-March, Province leadership decided it prudent and necessary to reschedule our 2020 Augustinian Gala. The event—which includes the celebration of honorees Fr. Daniel Hartigan, O.S.A., Fr. Jim Thompson, O.S.A., Mark Hacker, and Robert Sullivan—has been moved to April of 2021. As a small community of friars with a large financial burden, this was a difficult decision to make. This Gala is our largest fundraiser and brings in an average net revenue of $150,000 each year, all of which goes directly to the care of our elderly friars, the education of new vocations, and our missions in Peru.

Our Province also has had to postpone the ordination of Deacon Jack Tierney, O.S.A. to the priesthood. Though his ordination had originally been scheduled for April 25, we now wait to see when restrictions on social gatherings will be changed to such an extent that makes this celebration plausible.

However, we still have occasion to give thanks to the Lord! I am delighted to share with you that Providence Alum, Br. Samuel Joutras, O.S.A. (Class of ‘10), has been approved to make his Solemn Profession of Vows to the Augustinians. Br. Sam first joined Augustinian formation in 2014, following his graduation from the University of Illinois. He made his first, temporary vows to the Augustinians in 2016, and now prepares himself for making a lifelong commitment to religious life.

Once again, we wait and see when can schedule this celebration.

In the Fall of 2020, the Midwest Augustinians will also be admitting three new men into the first stage of Augustinian formation, called the Pre-Novitiate. This is a great number for us, and we take it as a sign of hope for the future. I have been extremely proud of the way our friars, in various ministries, have adapted to the restrictions placed on social gatherings over the past couple months. Our parishes rushed to find ways to stream their liturgies over social media; our teachers and school administrators transferred their curricula to online instruction and evaluation; our men in formation have been finishing their own semesters sheltered together in our formation house. I ask all our readers to give special thought and prayer to our retired and infirm friars living in our Health Care Community at Bl. Stephen Bellesini Friary at St. Anthony Village. These men, who are so used to living in community, are now confined to complete isolation in their own rooms.

Our Province Office has made increased efforts to communicate regularly with you through video, social media and our website, midwestaugustinians.org. If you have not done so already, please look up the Midwest Augustinians on YouTube and follow us under the same name on Facebook and Twitter! Continue to take care of yourselves spiritually and physically in the coming months. Remember that “social distancing” does not mean isolation; so I encourage you to reach out to any of the friars if you are in need.

From Anger & Anxiety to Acceptance & Compassion

P

erhaps like you and many others, after two weeks of confinement due to some unseen menace, (the COVID-19 virus), with no end in sight, I began to experience a mixture of feelings, not all good. Being a type-A personality who needs to make things happen, and who enjoys deep relationships with other people, I was at first, angry, anxious, and a bit hopeless. The four nurses (wife, daughter, in-laws) in my family have been on my case daily about accepting this reality. Since I have Leukemia, they have kept warning me that I am a “train wreck waiting to happen.” Yet, I kept thinking of that quote from St. Theresa of Avila, “If this is how you treat your friends, Lord, no wonder that you have so few.”

In my pride, at first, I took this virus as a personal insult, or as some of Job’s friends might say, “Why me Lord?”

As if I were the only person effected. In my ninth year with the Augustinians, I appreciate deeply their sense of community. My ministry requires me to connect with people, to create meaningful relationships, and to raise funds to support the ministries of this wonderful Order.

With prayer, I began to reflect on a proper Christ-centered response. St. Augustine instructed us that God judged it better to bring good out of evil than to suffer no evil to exist. The suffering of this pandemic is deep and widespread, impacting millions of people at all levels of society, especially those poorer and older, and those least capable of caring for themselves. Opportunities for witness, for good, and for grace abound within all suffering – man-made and otherwise. Is that not the essential message of the Easter Season? Christ and His followers bent their wills to God’s wills, and a glorious morning awaited all of them. We can be the Judas or the John of the Easter story – amid the suffering of the cross, one of them chose to follow God’s will, the other did not. Like you, I too must choose my response - my will or God’s will.

So, I pray for you and your families in these challenging times. I reach out to people with messages of hope and consolation. I have many blessings. I think of my five beautiful children, my eleven grandchildren, my co-workers, the Augustinians, and about you – all great blessings. I resolve daily to do the next right thing, and to seek God’s will and trust in His Providence. I will try to give witness in these troubled times. So, let us take heart. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

Hundreds of Chicago Families Served by Food Drive St. Rita Parish has long made a practice of distributing food to parishioners and neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet.

However, since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the subsequent shelter-in-place orders, this has become nearly a fulltime job for the Augustinian staff.

“Usually we would give out packages to around 40 families every other week,” says St. Rita Pastor, Fr. Homero Sanchez, O.S.A., “But once the pandemic hit we were suddenly serving 80 families every week. At this point [in mid-May], we are serving about 500 to 600 families per week.”

The needs of their community are both urgent and immense, given the large population of immigrants, most of whom are undocumented. Explains Fr. Homer, “Our motivation is that many of our Latino communities, many people have lost their jobs, and many have become ill. Those who are sick have been laid off. But our community is an immigrant community, most of whom cannot qualify for welfare or for unemployment.”

On Sunday, May 17, lines wound around the block at 62nd St. and Fairfield Ave. well before food distribution began, as friars and volunteers set out stands of donated goods such as rice, fruit, bread and vegetables—including 500 boxes of mangos!

The crowd may only get larger from here, suggests Fr. Homero: “I am worried because I don’t know what will happen each week, but I get the satisfaction that we are serving our community.”

Free Clinic in Tulsa is Rooted in Augustinian Caritas

I

n recent months greater light has been cast by the Covid-19 pandemic on the need for access to dignified health care among socio-economically vulnerable populations. In the Tulsa region many of the most at-risk are from the Hispanic immigrant population, who exhibit a high prevalence of chronic diseases, especially diabetes and hypertension.

Over the past two decades, the Xavier Medical Clinic—part of the Saint Francis Health System—has developed into one of the region’s leading providers of free medical care for such uninsured and underserved families. Our Province’s own Augustinian Affiliate and past Gala Honoree Dr. Phyllis Lauinger served as the Medical Director of the clinic at its founding in 2001 and has continued to volunteer as a physician for the past 10 years.

“In medicine there is no judgment about where you come from or how you arrived here,” says Dr. Lauinger, “Whoever comes through our door with a medical need, we will do our best to provide care.”

With a rotating volunteer staff of more than 30 physicians serving, the Xavier Clinic now welcomes patients 5 days a week into their recently renovated multi-wing clinic situated on Route 66.

Outside the entrance doors, visitors are greeted by a large bronze statue of Mary comforting a child Jesus.

Inside they find access to pediatricians, internists, cardiologists, prenatal care, pharmaceuticals, and education, among a wider range of services.

The mission and capacity of the free clinic has grown considerably since it first launched 2001, when it accepted patients one day per week in an old white house located across the street from St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. “We began seeing a few dozen patients each week,” remembers Dr. Lauinger, “We could offer x-rays, do simple blood work, care for acute illnesses, and provide referrals and education.” By its second week the clinic had to close their doors three hours ahead of schedule because they could not handle any more patients.

Dr. Lauinger, together with her husband Anthony Lauinger, have been distinguished supporters of the Augustinian friars and members of the Cascia Hall community for many decades. Together they put seven of their eight children through Cascia, and it was during their children’s time in high school that Dr. Lauinger returned to receive her Master’s in Public Health Administration. She had previously earned her M.D. from Columbia University in 1972 and practiced medicine part-time after she and Anthony began a family. Spurred by the 1973 decision of Roe v. Wade, she focused her medical expertise on advocacy of Pro-Life causes and the importance of dignified prenatal care for women.

After finishing her degree in Public Health, Dr. Lauinger was contacted

by Andrea Hyatt, the V.P. of Mission Effectiveness at Saint Francis Health System, who had been looking for support in the launch of a free clinic to address the substantial portion of Tulsa’s population going without any sustained medical care. A pilot program in 1999 only reaffirmed this need, especially among the Hispanic residents on the city’s east side. Hyatt recruited Dr. Lauinger to come on as the first director

of the new clinic and brought in the co-sponsorship of the Religious Sisters of Mercy and the Saint Francis Health System—which itself had been founded in 1960 by Natalie and William K. Warren, Sr., the parents of William K. Warren, Jr., Augustinian Affiliate and Cascia alum. Saint Francis Health System assumed responsibility for the medical care and equipment, while Catholic Charities furnished the site and offered social work assistance. The two organizations continued to be joint sponsors until 2010, when the clinic became a part of the larger Saint Francis System.

Another founding member of the Xavier Clinic was the then-recently retired Radiologist and Augustinian Affiliate, Dr. John Kauth. Dr. Kauth, with his wife late wife Beverley, have been wonderful supporters of the Augustinians and sent their sons and grandchildren to Cascia. “Without Dr. Kauth’s renowned medical expertise and spirit of selflessness, the Xavier Medical Clinic would not have been possible," said Dr. Lauinger.

Soon after opening, the medical staff realized that the illnesses they were being asked to treat were of a different nature than they had expected. Dr. Kauth explained, “Upon opening, we anticipated that most patients would be coming in with acute illnesses such as respiratory infections, rashes, and sore throats. After working with our patients, we evolved so that we now mostly work on the treatment and management of chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.” In comparison to other free clinics, Xavier has a great advantage in treating chronic disease due to the support of the Saint Francis Health System, which provides lab testing and imaging at no cost to the patient. The hospital further waives all charges for patients who need surgery or other care that cannot be provided within the Xavier Clinic.

Currently, the clinic reports that more than 90% of its patients are Hispanic, many of whom have been coming to the clinic for 15 years or more. Even for some older patients,

the Xavier Clinic represents their first opportunity ever to speak with physicians. “We also see our mission as educating patients about diet and nutrition,” said Dr. Lauinger, “We want to keep them out of the Emergency Room.”

The ability to operate outside of insurance or Medicaid programs allows the volunteer physicians to develop deeper and longer-lasting relationships with their patients. “Since we do not have to worry about billing hours, our volunteer physicians can spend as much personal time with a patient as they wish. It is about creating a quality impact on an individual,” said Dr. Kauth.

Another limitation of working inside Medicaid, they said, was the program’s lack of coverage in Oklahoma of prenatal care for undocumented women (though this would change in 2008 with the “Soon to be Sooners” program). In response to the evident need among their patient base, the clinic introduced the Pregnancy Program in 2004, under which uninsured women were invited to receive treatment “throughout the course of their pregnancy and birth.”

Services provided for expectant and new mothers include comprehensive prenatal care and education.

At its current location, the clinic now has two staff physicians, one of whom is an internist and a member of the Religious Sisters of Mercy. Except for restricted hours during the pandemic, the clinic is open Monday through Friday, and it typically has several volunteer physicians there every day. At the age of 90, Dr. Kauth still comes in two mornings a week to help sort out pills, read all the X-rays, and assist the other doctors in ordering imaging from Saint Francis Hospital.

The full-time Nurse Manager, Jessica Gomez, says what sets the Xavier clinic apart from other offices is the camaraderie both among the staff and the patients. “We work together as a team,” she said, “You truly feel that you are doing the work of God.”

Augustinian Life After Retirement: An Interview with Fr. Jerry Knies Our Province currently includes 27 friars in retirement, among whom 17 reside at the Blessed Stephen Bellesini Friary at Saint Anthony Village in Crown Point, Indiana. This makes Crown Point the home of our largest Augustinian Community! These men, though they reside in varying levels of care, continue to fulfill the Augustinian call to common life.

Many of them continue forms of ministry through art and writing. We want to do more in this magazine to connect our readers with the friars at Bellesini Friary and are excited to bring you this interview with Fr. Jerry Knies, O.S.A. Following the interview, Fr. Jerry has provided a brief look into his current book project, entitled Thou, reflections for a theology of the personal encounter.

Can you tell us about the work in formation ministry and retreat leadership you did for the Order?

I was ordained (1962) in Rome just before the opening of Vatican Council II. Upon returning to the United States, I earned a doctoral degree in theology (S.T.D.) from Catholic University of America. My ministry has been varied according to what the Province needed over these past years of change since Vatican Council II. I was assigned as director of our seminary for two years at Tolentine College. My next assignment was as professor of theology and procurator at the Augustinianum in Rome. I was then engaged in retreat work and spiritual counseling for several years back at Tolentine in Olympia Fields, Illinois. My next assignment for some sixteen years was personnel director for the Province. In 2010, I was

appointed prior and teacher of novices at our novitiate in Racine, Wisconsin.

When did you decide to enter into full retirement? How was that decision made, and how did you feel about it at the time?

I never decided to retire! A kind of retirement was decided for me when I fell in my room at Racine and broke a leg in 2017. Recovery at our retirement facility in Crown Point, Indiana has been the most recent story of my life.

Due to health complications following the broken leg, I use a wheelchair and walker to get around.

What is life like for you and the other friars in Crown Point? What are the good and the difficult parts about living there?

We are all in various stages of health, mental and/or physical, depending on our advanced ages and diminished physical strength. Nevertheless, we have a functioning community of Augustinians who find a common life in spite of each one’s very different personal needs. Some of us are able to drive and get others to doctor appointments or shopping as needed.

We celebrate our common life at the noon meal and at morning liturgy.

It is a comfortable life for all of us, though some are less content and need the help of fraternal compassion and companionship from others. Our following of the Rule of St. Augustine is most obvious in the way we create one community from many brothers with so many different needs.

Other than limitations to my ability to move about—no running in the corridor!—I am free to keep abreast of developments in theology and in the political news of the day. In the meantime, I am writing a book on spiritual direction. Though pretty much devoid of library sources, I have learned to use the internet. It is a bit clumsy and not as convenient as it used to be with my own books at hand. The Lord’s providence always makes up for such and other inconveniences! There are about twenty-five people looking over my shoulder as I write “sketches” for what I hope to publish eventually. Fr. Ron Schieble O.S.A. is among them and lives just down the corridor from me.

What can you tell us about the care you receive from the staff at St. Anthony?

I will begin by saying the food is truly excellent as institutional fare goes.

The medical staff of doctors and nurses are more than simply professionally attentive. There is a caring atmosphere about the building that speaks of the Christ among us. There are, of course, some grumpy souls among us, but all in all it is a cheerful place to live.

The gratitude we feel towards so many generous donors is in our remembrances at prayer. We are one in Christ with them as well.

Thou: Reflections for a Theology of Personal Encounter

Is there anything you feel particularly grateful for in your life right now, which you would like to express to our donors?

Much of my ministerial life has been guided by Vatican II and a preoccupation on my part with leadership in the Church.

We have been trained in obedience but have overlooked the importance of leadership in formation policies. It is a providential gift I find in being knocked from my horse, so to speak, and given the time to gather reflections on leadership and the human person. This “providential” gift, however, is clothed in the generosity of the donors to our retirement funds. It is clothed in the very real sacrifices they have made for the benefit of all of us in our dotage years. I have been freed from my car and my bicycle but freed with the time it takes to pray through and think through contributing to a newly envisioned and wholesome community of all humankind.

That kind of world is a place, for example, where borders are not places to divide, despise and disdain, but meet, encounter, understand and love the other. Such I believe is the spiritual direction to a future designed by the Holy Spirit and given to us to pursue from now on! An era of Catholic piety used to be a Jesus and me relationship. Today it is more Pauline: Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian,[a] slave, free; but Christ is all and in all. (Colossians 3:11) Hope is sustained by the promise of Jesus in the Gospel of John: The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—he will teach you everything and remind you of all that [I] told you. (John 14:26)

Noticing how we are one people on the earth rather than many peoples distributed into divisions of families, clans, tribes, nations, religions, ideologies and political affiliations I ask myself whether there be a spiritual direction from the Holy Spirit for “us” confined to a single globe with a single final destiny for humankind? Besides Jesus’ command to make disciples of all nations… until the end of the age (Matthew 28: 19-20) there are recent global challenges to get it all together or else! Or else we will all perish as evidenced by the following: 1. Remote possibility: The possibility in the next 100,000 years of an asteroid crashing onto the earth. Such is a remote possibility astrophysicists and rocket scientists must address to avoid ending humankind as once the dinosaurs ended. Not to worry!

2. Near threat: The threat of a catastrophic climate change in about 10-20 years unless political will and common sense reverse the trash flow filling the earth and carbon fuels smoking the sky with CO 2. Worry!

3. Near panic: The covid-19 pandemic and hearing there is no reason to panic if staying at least six feet from everyone.

Otherwise panic!

We are privileged in our time to observe pictures of the earth from the moon. That picture together with the above three observations makes it obviously clear there is no longer a “them” anymore. There is only an “us”. My book considers the question: Is there a spiritual direction for “us”? I am not so foolish as to believe I have the answer to that question. St. Augustine was moved to write his City of God after the disaster of the invasion of Rome. My project is not so ambitious.

I only hope to initiate conversation about the dignity of the human person rather than the woundedness of human nature from original sin.

At the level of the human person, all are created in the image of God and worthy of the respect and affection due to images of God. In the world of human persons, everyone of “us” is equally due to be addressed by thou. Such is the title of my book: Thou, reflections for a theology of the personal encounter. I use the Sacred Scriptures as written by many different human authors in a variety of places and times, but also and especially as inspired by one Holy Spirit with a spiritual direction for “us” from the beginning of creation till now, and for as long as Christ Jesus is with “us” until the end of the age.

WHAT WE'RE READING After professing their vows to the Augustinian Order, friars from our Province typically enter into graduate-level studies at the Catholic Theological Union, in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. During a five-year period in which they earn their masters, friars reside in St. Augustine Friary, across the street from CTU, with the exception on their third year, which they spend on pastoral service. So, what exactly are these men studying? In this feature we have asked two recently professed brothers to tell us about one of their Fall courses and, in particular, one text they have been studying.

Br. Samuel Joutras, O.S.A. One of the books that I read for class this semester is entitled, Deep Incarnation: God’s Redemptive Suffering with Creatures, penned by the late Australian theologian, Denis Edwards. This text was one of my required readings for a class called, “God and the Mystery of Human Suffering”. In short, Edwards builds on the work of various thinkers in the field of ecological theology (ecotheology), a current theological conversation which highlights the interrelationships within the created order—plants, animals, the environment, human beings, the entire cosmos. Ecotheology examines the role of creation within God’s ongoing process of salvation. It emphasizes an understanding of the human story as being integrally woven into the fabric of the entire created universe. Human beings are not the only participants within the narrative of salvation—all of creation is incorporated into this narrative.

Br. Spencer Thomas, O.S.A. For my Applied Medical and Sexual Ethics course, our textbook is Medical Ethics: Sources of Catholic Teachings, fourth edition, written

by Kevin D. O’Rourke, O.P., and Philip J. Boyle. Setting the groundwork for an assessment of topics using the wisdom of Roman Catholic moral theology, the book begins by explaining normative concepts in moral theology, such as legitimate cooperation, conditions for double effect, dignity of the human person, common good, and formation of conscience. TWO POEMS

Fair One Oh radiant Lady, Fair one of the eternal One, your Yes reverberates through time and space.

The Angel hailed you, “Full of grace!”

N’er has been a truer address— Hold me now as you held your Son.

This poem was inspired and composed while on silent retreat at a Trappist monastery. It is a simple pair of tercets, invoking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As the first disciple of her son Jesus, Mary offers us an unparalleled witness in accepting the invitation of a personal relationship with the incarnate God who seeks after our own heart.

Beata Beatrix How gently does that alluring light descend when life’s closing shadow has been drawn out.

It cradles the glowing fire of a soul set to the Sun— A soul cut down at her zenith by cruel necessity.

Eyes—no sooner shut—open to behold and be beheld amid Eden’d petals.

The title and background for this little poem are taken from a mid 19th century painting by the PreRaphaelite artist, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, a version of which resides here in our very own Art Institute of Chicago. The painting, as well as these verses, refer to the great Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s lover, Beatrice, at the time of her death, as penned in Dante’s work “La Vita Nuova”. These lines speak of the gentle embrace of God’s abundant grace, the beholding of a soul brought into the arms of the divine.

LA PRELATURA DE CHUQUIBAMBILLA COORDINANDO CON LAS AUTORIDADES PARA EL BIEN COMÚN

L

a Prelatura de Chuquibambilla es una Iglesia Particular del Perú que abarca las 3 provincias altas del departamento de Apurímac: Antabamba, Cotabambas y Grau; sus parroquias se encuentran entre los 3200 y 5000 m.s.n.m. Su Obispo, Mons. Edinson Edgardo Farfán Córdova, O.S.A., los sacerdotes (religiosos agustinos y diocesanos), las congregaciones religiosas y laicos misioneros, en comunión con toda la Iglesia, tienen una clara opción por los pobres.

La mayor parte de los habitantes de la Prelatura son personas en situación de vulnerabilidad, en su mayoría campesinos quechua – hablantes; no contamos con ningún hospital en las tres provincias, existen comunidades a las que no llega ni siquiera la señal de la radio, manteniéndose así aisladas de cualquier información. Esta situación se ha hecho aún más preocupante estos días que nos vemos afectados por la pandemia del COVID-19; por ello, la Prelatura está plenamente enfocada en buscar el mayor bien para la población.

Para poder alcanzar dicho objetivo, la Prelatura, a través de las parroquias y Caritas de Chuquibambilla, ha llevado a cabo un trabajo coordinado con las autoridades e instituciones de la zona, para determinar las diferentes medidas que se adoptan para enfrentar esta pandemia. También hemos velado por el trabajo en equipo entre las autoridades civiles y militares, sin excepciones, dejando de lado mezquindades, intrigas o desconfianzas; esto nos

permitirá poder llegar al mayor número de familias posible, ya sea por medio del gobierno local, el gobierno nacional, o con la colaboración de las empresas privadas.

La Prelatura agradece la confianza depositada de parte de las diferentes autoridades, instituciones públicas y privadas, que dejando de lado sus diferencias, nos permiten realizar un trabajo coordinado y en equipo, para el bienestar de nuestra población, de manera especial, de los más vulnerables.

Así mismo, hemos continuado acompañando espiritualmente a nuestra feligresía con la

celebración diaria de la Eucaristía en cada parroquia, que es transmitida por las redes sociales y las emisoras locales. Oramos por las necesidades del mundo, por nuestras autoridades, que sabemos que hacen lo humanamente posible, por nuestra gente, que cada día de esta cuarentena comienza a desesperarse más.

Sabemos que nadie estaba preparado para enfrentar una situación de esta magnitud, pero con la esperanza que nos trae el Señor resucitado, esperamos que pronto termine todo esto y salgamos adelante.

uizás como usted y muchos otros, después de dos semanas de confinamiento debido a un peligro invisible (el virus covid-19) no se vislumbra el fin de todo esto. Empecé a sentir una mezcla de sentimientos y no todos eran buenos.

Con una personalidad de tipo A uno necesita lograr metas y conseguir los objetivos y también disfruto relaciones profundas con otros. Al principio de esta pandemia, estuve enojado, ansioso y un poco desesperado.

Las cuatro enfermeras (mi esposa, mi hija y mis nueras) en mi familia me están retando diariamente para aceptar esta nueva realidad. Debido a que tengo leucemia me han advertido que soy una bomba de tiempo.

En mi orgullo, tomé el virus como un insulto personal o como algunos amigos de Job decían "¿Por qué a mí, Dios?" como si yo fuera la única persona afectada. En mi noveno año con los agustinos aprecio profundamente su sentido de comunidad. Mi obra requiere que me conecte con la gente, para establecer relaciones significativas y recaudar fondos para apoyar a la misión de esta Orden maravillosa.

Con la oración, comencé a reflexionar sobre una respuesta adecuada centrada en Cristo. San Agustín nos instruye que "Dios juzgó mejor, sacar el bien del mal, que no sufrir el mal existente". El sufrimiento de esta pandemia es vasto y extensivo, impactando a millones de personas en todos los niveles de

la sociedad, especialmente los más vulnerables quienes son pobres y mayores, y menos capaces de cuidarse.

Las oportunidades para testificar, para el bien y la gracia abundan en todo sufrimiento, hecho por el ser humano o de otra manera. ¿No es esa la esencia de la temporada de Pascua? Jesucristo y sus discípulos dieron sus voluntades a la voluntad de Dios y una gloriosa mañana los esperaba. Podemos ser el Judas o el Juan de la historia de la Pascua: entre el sufrimiento de la cruz, uno eligió seguir la voluntad de Dios y el otro no. Como usted, yo también necesito elegir mi respuesta: mi voluntad o la voluntad de Dios.

Entonces, oro por ustedes y sus familias en estos tiempos difíciles. Me acerco a ti, el lector, con mensajes de esperanza y consuelo. Yo mismo tengo muchas bendiciones. Tengo a mis cinco hermosos hijos, mis once nietos, mis colegas, los agustinos y ustedes, nuestros benefactores –todas estas son grandes bendiciones. Yo decido diariamente hacer el bien y busco la voluntad de Dios y confío en su providencia. Trataré de dar testimonio en estos tiempos difíciles: No se inquieten por nada; antes bien, en toda ocasión presenten sus peticiones a Dios y junten la acción de gracias a la súplica. Y la paz de Dios, que es mayor de lo que se puede imaginar, les guardará sus corazones y sus pensamientos en Cristo Jesús.

Los Agustinos en Chicago hablan para apoyar a las familias inmigrantes

E

l 21 de febrero, el Prior Provincial P. Tony Pizzo, O.S.A. y la Comunidad Agustina de la parroquia de Sta. Rita en Chicago reunieron a líderes de varias comunidades religiosas para realizar una conferencia de prensa para difundir un mensaje de esperanza y solidaridad con las familias inmigrantes.

“Parece que hemos olvidado que ellos son nuestros vecinos. Son personas con quienes trabajamos, rezamos y con quienes nos encontramos hoy a pesar de las amenazas enviando agentes de detención a las ciudades santuario".

El P. Tony dijo en su discurso a los miembros de la prensa.

El evento se organizó debido al anuncio del gobierno federal de que los agentes de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza de los Estados Unidos (CBP) pueden entrar a Chicago y otras ciudades santuario para detener a inmigrantes indocumentados. Los frailes agustinos se reunieron con el Rabino Ricky Kamil del Centro de Acción Religiosa de Illinois del judaísmo reformista, Jeremy Chia de L'Arche Chicago, y defensores de los inmigrantes Consuelo Martínez y Elideth Hernández.

El P. Ray Flores, O.S.A., que sirve a la parroquia de Sta. Rita con el pastor P. Como un gesto práctico y urgente de solidaridad, el clero y los organizadores del evento les prometieron a los inmigrantes del sur de la ciudad que les ayudarían para conectarse con asistencia legal y servicios de salud mental.

El P. Pizzo, le aseguró a la comunidad que continuarán teniendo un santuario en la Iglesia: “Como católicos, como personas de diversas tradiciones religiosas, quienes vivieron durante años dentro de comunidades de inmigrantes, sabemos que dentro de muchas familias de inmigrantes hay múltiples estados de inmigración.

Los barrios vecinos que rodean la parroquia de Sta. Rita (Chicago Lawn, West Lawn y Gage Park) han

estado compuestos por un gran porcentaje de familias inmigrantes hispanas a partir de la década de 1990. La parroquia agustiniana fue una de las primeras defensoras de los derechos de los inmigrantes en la ciudad y ha colaborado durante mucho tiempo con el Proyecto Organizador del Suroeste (SWOP).

Una organización sin fines de lucro centrada en la protección de las familias inmigrantes contra las prácticas de préstamos abusivos y las ejecuciones hipotecarias.

En el 2018, la Arquidiócesis de Chicago seleccionó a Sta. Rita como recipiente del Premio San Toribio Romo en reconocimiento de su programa Pastoral Migratorio, que ministra y empodera a la población inmigrante hispana de su comunidad al abordar "necesidades humanas y pastorales básicas y urgentes en ausencia de una reestructuración de la política de inmigración".

As 8th Augustinian Gala Moves to 2021 We Profile Honoree Robert Sullivan, Affiliate

F

ollowing our decision to push forward our 8th Augustinian Gala to the Spring of 2021, members of our Advancement staff were touched when over fifty supporters, who had made cash deposits to the event, decided to leave their funds with us as 2020 gifts. We acknowledge that in light of the personal and business obligations many of our donors are facing, this is a poignant reminder of how charitable hearts respond generously to the Augustinian ministry.

Our Augustinian Gala has not been truly been cancelled; we are simply moving it forward. Though we discussed the idea of a “virtual” or web-based, celebration, we ultimately decided that our group of extraordinary honorees deserved more. We are, therefore, keeping the same class of Gala honorees for the 2021 Gala: Fr. Jim Thompson, O.S.A.; Fr. Daniel Hartigan, O.S.A. (posthumously); Mark Hacker; and Robert Sullivan. Over the next year we will continue to share information about our honorees with you both online and through our magazine.

Today we are very proud to feature Augustinian Affiliate (1994) and Cascia Hall alum (1963), Robert Sullivan. As with our other honorees, Bob was chosen for his exemplary demonstration of the three core Augustinian values of truth, unity, and love.

Robert J. Sullivan, Jr. was born on September 8, 1945 and was one of six children. He first became acquainted with the Augustinians in high school as student at Cascia Hall Preparatory School in Tulsa, OK. After graduating from Cascia Hall, Bob went on to attend the University of Notre Dame and in 1967 he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and then continued to earn his master’s in the same field in 1969 at the University of Michigan.

In 1970, Bob returned to Tulsa and worked for the Williams Companies, where he was responsible for the development of the Williams Center Project. In 1975, Bob embarked on a new chapter of his career and founded two companies (Armstrong and Associates and Lumen Energy Company) all while leading his own

family enterprise, Sullivan and Company, LLC. In 2002, he was appointed by then-Governor Frank Keating to be a member of his cabinet as Secretary of Energy and held onto to the post through 2003. From 2003 until 2005, he became the Chairman of Oklahoma Energy Resources Board (OERB) collaborating on efforts to grow the state’s public education system and environmental clean-ups.

In 2006, Bob launched a campaign to become the republican candidate for governor for the state of Oklahoma. That same year, he joined the Board of the Directors of the Unit Corporation and the National Stripper Well Association and in 2011, he was once again appointed to be a member of Governor Mary Fallin’s cabinet as the Special Advisor on Economic Development and Job Creation. He helped established a task force made up 45 members (25 CEOs and 20 state leaders) to assist Governor Fallin in her job creating initiatives.

Bob’s main objectives have never been for the benefit of himself. Throughout his career, Bob’s achievements have always been for the benefit of his neighbors, especially those in his home city of Tulsa and his home state of Oklahoma.

As he was building his family business and working in state government, he

committed his personal time and finances to advancing the Church’s mission. He sat on numerous Catholic school boards whose purpose was to provide a quality Catholic education to underserved children; he advised and consulted on the integration of the Monte Cassino School into Cascia Hall and its transformation from an all-male to a co-ed institution.

He serves as a trustee of the Monte Cassino Endowment Trust, which provides need-based aid to students at Cascia Hall.

Not only an advocate and proponent for access to private Catholic education, he also deeply cares about social issues.

He was a board member and treasurer for 18 years for Catholic Charities of Eastern Oklahoma. The organization’s work has been instrumental in several social projects aimed at helping the homeless, the wrongfully incarcerated, pregnant women, HIV/AIDS patients, and those in need of hospice care. Truly a man of truth, unity, and love, his works and philanthropy are “powerfully symbolic because they are the visible signs of invisible realities.” A man who recognizes his own privilege, but also recognizes the realities of others on the margins of society and the basic services they need.

Bob ensures that the marginalized are seen and that the necessities they receive are not privileges, but rights.
