Welcome from the Prior Provincial Dear Friends of the Augustinians, My sincere greetings to all who are attending the annual Augustinian Gala of 2021 and all those who helped make this possible. We are treading into unchartered territory these days with our first virtual Gala. It has been quite the journey! I am filled with hope and enthusiasm with the prospect that this event will be very successful and productive as we forge ahead in supporting the Augustinian Mission of the Midwest Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel. As a nation, we have been facing many challenges over the past year. We have been learning to persevere in these difficult times because God has been giving us the strength to face, move through, and overcome these perceived obstacles. Someone once said, You need to be strong to stand firm in these stormy conditions. Nothing is permanent. A major hallmark of our faith is HOPE. We have been given this opportunity to demonstrate our willingness to work with, walk with, and live with one another—this is part and parcel of the nature of our life within the Order and as members of the wider Augustinian Family. By accompanying us, you help keep the flame of fervor alive in our service to Christ’s Church. St. Augustine once said, “One loving heart sets another on fire.” We are grateful for your heartfelt prayers and generosity. We are privileged to acknowledge our honorees this year. Mark Hacker and Robert Sullivan are both affiliates of the Order and educated in our apostolates. Fathers Daniel Hartigan and James Thompson have given over 125 years of combined service to the Order and the Church. The Augustinian legacy continues on through good and generous people such as yourselves who have been part of our life since the founding of the Province in 1941. The year 2021 marks the 80th anniversary of the Province. We are proud of our past and hopeful toward the future. This virtual event is possible because of the dedicated people who conceived of this technological opportunity and managed us through it. We are very grateful to several individuals, such as, James Capraro for his guidance in this virtual venture, and Michael Gerrity, along with the Advancement staff and Advisory Council. This collective endeavor includes many of our friars as well who have contributed to the evening’s success. Even though we are distanced, the collective efforts of several have brought us together both in spirit and real time. Sincerely in Christ and St. Augustine,

Very Rev. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A. Prior Provincial of the Midwest Augustinians 4

April 26, 2021, marked the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Midwest Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel. Being placed under the patronage of the Madonna of Genazzano, we invoke her intercession daily in our prayers so that, through her maternal assistance, we may continue to move forward for the wellbeing of our Province and the people of God with whom we serve. We are grateful for our past and hopeful for the future. May the Lord, in his mercy and wisdom, accompany us and give us grateful hearts and docile spirits to listen and respond with generosity.

2021 Honorees Fr. Daniel Hartigan, O.S.A.† A preeminent figure of Catholic education in Chicago, Fr. Dan received his first active assignment in 1946 to teach mathematics at St. Rita of Cascia High School. When Mendel Catholic opened in 1951, he became one of its founding faculty members. In 1960, he was named superintendent of schools for the Augustinian Secondary School System. From 1963 to 1968, while continuing to serve as superintendent, Fr. Dan also served as principal of Mendel Catholic.

Robert Sullivan

R

A graduate of Cascia Hall Preparatory Academy, Class of 1963, Robert was affiliated to the Augustinian Order in 1994 and served as a member of the Province Advancement Council from 2011 to 2019. He founded both Lumen Energy Corp. and Sullivan & Co. and for over 40 years, he has served as chairman of five school boards, including Cascia Hall. In 2012, the Diocese of Tulsa gave Robert and his family the St. Francis of Assisi Award for supporting Catholic education.

Mark Hacker A graduate of St. Rita of High School Class of 1990, Mark Hacker provides an inspiring example of what it means to be a “Ritaman.” Following graduation, Mark went on to attend Villanova University, where he met his wife Mindy, and earned both his Bachelors and Juris Doctor degrees. Mark has always been a generous supporter of his alma maters and served as a member of the Province Advancement Council from 2011 to 2019. In 2001, Mark began working for Motorola and was named General Counsel in 2013.

R

Fr. Jim Thompson, O.S.A. † Profiled by CBS as the “Wounded Healer” of Chicago, Fr. Jim served as hospital chaplain at Little Company of Mary from 1997 to 2017, all while struggling with his own blindness. The majority of Fr. Jim’s service was in the formation of new friars, serving as director of theologians, director of novices, and director of pre- and post-novitiate students. Sadly, we lost Fr. Jim nearly two months ago after his health deteriorated rapidly—we look forward to the opportunity to honor him now.

Mission Statement We, the Augustinians of the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel, are members of the worldwide Order of St. Augustine in the Roman Catholic Church. Centered in the Eucharist and prayer, we search for God in community by sharing our lives, goods and spiritual journey with each other and the people of God. In harmony of mind and heart on our journey toward God, our experience of common life flows into and shapes our ministries. We continue to serve the Church in schools, parishes and missions as we seek to discern new paths of service to which God calls us.

14

Gala Proceeds Support…

Care for Elder & Infirm Friars New Vocations Our Vocations are the future of our religious order. These young men in formation and discernment will be the next leaders of the Church. We are blessed to have seen a steadily growing amount of young men interested in joining our community the past few years. Placing greater emphasis on vocations outreach will allow these efforts to blossom.

It is only right and just that we care for those who give all their lives in service to the Church. This includes those currently retired and infirm, those currently serving in active ministry, and those who have joined the Augustinians in recent years. The Midwest Province established the “Covenant Care” program in 2010, which states that Augustinians should live in religious community for as long as physical health permits.

Missions in Peru For over 50 years, the Augustinians have been serving the impoverished regions of northern Peru. This service takes place in schools, parishes, and in basic human support activities across a rugged mountainous area covering well over 14,000 square miles. Thanks to the dedication of the Augustinians, there are now over thirty solemnly professed Augustinians in Northern Peru.

They advise the Provincial and his advancement staff on fundraising and communications strategy and programs, and they also provide leadership in these efforts. Members are appointed by the Provincial and may serve multiple two-year terms.

“Hi Fr. Jim

“Thank you, Fr. Friedel, for raising my awareness of social justice issues especially by encouraging support of the Hispanic community in Holland and MLK’s use of non-violence. With you social justice was not something to just be taught but was also lived. I especially appreciated your humor and sharing your time and talents with us at mass, in the classroom, on the basketball court and on the baseball diamond.” - Jim Carberry, Class of 70

I know you may not remember me. My name is Jim Murphy. While I never had you as a direct counselor, I know the type of person you are. You came to our Parish a number of times, which I introduce myself to you and the biggest thrill was that you indicated oh yea remembered you. I knew that was not case, which only shows what a great person you really are and always the pious gentleman. I want to let you know; how much the Augustine’s and your example impacted my life. Fr. Ray married my Wife and I. My daughter went to Providence High School in New Lenox and was married by Fr. Don and we live in Mother of Good Cousel Parish. Please know your always in my prayers and thoughts. Thank you for letting me know and treasure your life.” - Jim Murphy Class of 68

St. Augustine Class of 1970 is proud to sponsor this tribute to Fr. Jim. While more than 50 years have passed, many of us can vividly recall today your guidance, inspiration and holiness. Time has no boundaries on Christ’s love that is lived through His servants, muchas gracias Fr. Jim for your love. 44
