2018 - 2019 FISCAL YEAR MIDWEST PROVINCE OF OUR MOTHER OF GOOD COUNSEL OF THE AUGUSTINIAN ORDER
Dear Friends of the Augustinians, I am proud of the story that this Annual Report presents. It is yours - the story of your generosity, and what it has begot. I hope that you are able to see your impact in these pages. We have new men coming in. More specifically, over the last year our Province has received the Solemn Profession of Vows of three Augustinian friars: Br. Jack Tierney, O.S.A. who has been assigned to St. Turibius Parish in Chicago; Br. Nick Mullarkey, O.S.A., who has been assigned to Cascia Hall Preparatory School; and Fr. John Arulthas, installed as Pastor at the Sacred Heart Parish in Ontario. We accepted one more man, 22-year-old David Relstab into our Novitiate Program. We look forward to continued growth as Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., has been reassigned to the position of Provincial Vocations Director. Continue to pray for new vocations. This also represents my first full financial year at the head of our Province. I am proud to say that it includes the successful closure of the $1.5 million Year of Vocations capital campaign, which will ensure that we are able to adequately recruit your new friars, and educate the men we already have in formation without burdening them with student debt! Thank you to everyone who made this possible; your name is included in the list of donors in this report. This past year also included our dedicated mailings soliciting planned estate gifts from our donors. A planned gift is an incredible way to make a lasting impact on the future of the Church, and I urge you to look at the names of our Restless Hearts Society, where we include all those members who have included us in their will. They were a significant factor in helping us reach our campaign goal! As more of our friars enter into retirement, our expenses are increasing while our sources of revenue become fewer. Currently, we have only 17 friars in our Province under the age of 70 who are earning a full-time annual income. When we compare this to the 41 friars, we have now over the age of 70, we begin to see the enormity of the task before us. This is why our donors make up such a large part of our story. Therefore our Province depends upon your support so that the story continues. The great news is that you have helped us take tremendous strides towards financial stability over the recent years. Thanks to prudent financial management, stewardship, and the donations of over 2,000 people loyal to the Augustinians, the Province’s independently managed trusts have grown over 50% in less than a decade. This achievement is remarkable given the fact that expenses for our retired and infirm men, and our new vocations, have increased dramatically over the same period. The Trusts are now at just over $20 million. To become permanent self-sustaining trusts (where the principal is not depleted by annual drawdowns), they would need to grow to $40 million. ■ In accordance with the Province’s Covenant of Care, our Augustinian friars remain in community for as long as possible. However, a few friars need more specialized care. These men go to the Blessed Stephen Bellesini Friary in Crown Point, IN and remain in community within the facilities of Saint Anthony Village. It is a Catholic retirement community sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago. Additionally, the Blessed Stephen Bellesini Friary serves as a temporary home for friars needing physical rehabilitation. ■ The Midwest Province currently includes 27 friars in retirement or in rehabilitation. Among our retired friars, 17 of them are members of the Blessed Stephen Bellesini Friary at Saint Anthony Village in Crown Point, IN. All others remain members of our “active” communities in our schools and parishes. ■ For the past three years, the Midwest Province has been the recipient of a $50,000 grant from the Bernard Heerey Foundation of Chicago. The grants help to cover the costs for one retired friar who served the southside of Chicago.
Care for Retired & Infirm Friars
■ There are currently 20 men in Augustinian formation across the United States and Canada. In the Midwest Province there are seven men in various stages of the formation process.
■ Fr. John Arulthas, O.S.A. and Br. Nick Mullarkey, O.S.A. professed Solemn Vows on Pentecost. Fr. Arulthas became the first Sri Lankan Augustinian to enter the Order in over 500 years.
■ Under the leadership of former Vocations Director Fr. Richie Mercado, O.S.A. and current Director, Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., The Midwest Province has seven men in various stages of formation.
■ The Augustinian Novitiate (which serves all North American Provinces) relocated to Villanova, Pennsylvania, just outside Villnova University's campus.
■ Br. Sam Joutras, O.S.A. spent his Pastoral Year in the Vicarate of Chulucanas and while in Peru, he gave weekly homilies at the Parish of Señor de los Milagros and served as a Eucharistic Minister to the home-bound. ■ Br. Joe Roccasalva, O.S.A. spent his Pastoral Year at Providence High School in New Lenox, IL. ■ Br. Jack Tierney, O.S.A. professed Solemn Vows on December 15, 2018 at St. Thomas of Villanova Church in Villanova, PA.
■ Br. Jack Tierney, O.S.A. began his Diaconate internship at St. Turibius Parish.

Missions in Peru ■ Since the arrival of the Midwest Province in Northern Peru over 500,000 people in 14,000 square miles of rural area of the country have been served. ■ The Midwest Province provides social services to people that the government and local church simply do not have the means to offer. ■ In 2013, the intention of building a school was solidified and, as of Spring 2019, the school already had 100 students who were enrolled in classes taking place at Saint Rita Parish in Trujillo. During the last week of January 2019, construction of Colegio San Agustin began and is scheduled to be completed towards the end of March 2020. ■ Because of the construction of the school, the Peruvian people have seen it as a long-term investment and a community has been established with the intent of the locals matriculating their children in Colegio San Agustin.
■ Bishop Dan Turley, O.S.A. celebrated his 50th Anniversary of serving the Peruvian Missions. Ordained as bishop of the Diocese of Chulucanas in 1996, his tenure as bishop was extended by Pope Francis. ■ On March 27, 2019, Bishop Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A. was elected as the President of the Commission on Education, Culture and Cultural Property.

Augustinian Education
■ The Midwest Augustinians sponsor two schools—Saint many hats this past year at Providence. Br. Joe served Rita of Cascia High School in Chicago, IL and Cascia as the assistant coach of the Mathematics team that Hall Preparatory School in Tulsa, OK—and administer went to state (and placed 14th overall); he worked in one school of the Diocese of Joliet—Providence Catholic the Pastoral Office; helped organized the school's Kairos High School in New Lenox, IL. Two other independent Retreat; co-led an immersion trip to Panama for the Catholic schools are members of the Augustinian Augustinian Youth Encounter, where students from Secondary Education Association (ASEA) and although around the world gathered for spiritual formation. not officially sponsored by the Augustinian Order, these institutions of learning still embody the Augustinian ■ For a seventh consecutive year, Villanova College in tradition: Saint Thomas of Villanova College in King King City, ON achieved Silver-level Recognition for City, Ontario; and Austin Catholic High School in becoming a more ecologically conscious community Chesterfield, MI. and greener facility. ■ Fr. Paul Galetto, O.S.A. resigned as Head of School of ■ Cascia Hall Preparatory School's Robotics Team, the St. Rita High School on June 10, after three years of Commandobots, finished 13th out of 62 teams at the exemplary service. The Midwest Province and the Saint Robotics Regional Competition in Oklahoma. Rita High School community are currently in the process of searching for a new President. ■ Br. ■ Apart from the parishes served in Canada and Peru, the Midwest Augustinians now direct five parishes: Saint Rita of Cascia Parish in Chicago, IL; Saint Jude Parish in New Lenox, IL; Saint Turibius Parish in Chicago; Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish in Homer Glen, IL; and Saint Bernard Parish in Homer Glen, IL. ■ Fr. Joseph McCormick, O.S.A., Pastor of Saint Bernard Parish in Homer Glen, was appointed to additionally serve as the pastor of Our Mother of Good Counsel. This commences what is called a “Pastoral Collaborative” between the two churches, in contrast to a consolidation of the two into one. ■ Fr. Fred Taggart, O.S.A. has been reassigned from Saint Rita Parish in Racine, WI to the Augustinian Community of Cascia Hall in Tulsa, OK. ■ The Augustinians held a farewell Mass at Saint Rita Parish in Racine, WI on June 30. It was founded in 1925 by our Augustinian friars, at its original
location on Douglas Ave. They also helped build its current location which includes a monastery and school. It was the home of the Augustinian Novitiate for many years. The parishioners continued to be served by a community of Augustinian Seculars. ■ Fr. Tom Griffin, O.S.A., former Pastor of Saint Gabriel Parish in Chicago, was granted time away from the Province to help part-time in the Diocese of Las Vegas. ■ On March 30, 2019, more than 100 people were honored during a prayer service at Saint Rita Parish. These individuals recently became U.S. citizens and went through Saint Rita's Pastoral Migratoria program. This program, with the support of the Archdiocese of Chicago, began in 2009 and it is a a parish-based, immigrant-to-immigrant ministry. The program is open to people of all faiths and it is offered in both Spanish and English.

The Province’s Restless Hearts Society, for those making planned or estate gifts to the Province (to support our vocations, our retired and infirm men, and missions in Peru), is now over 80 members. This number has risen by 58 people the past six years. Please consider joining us. The eighth annual Province Gala will take place at the Drake Hotel in Chicago, Friday evening, April 24, 2020. Over 300 guests and Friars from four countries attend this evening of fellowship, great conversation, and joy. Sponsorships and early reservations for tables or seats are available now. The Province is promoting two major giving societies for those willing to make annual commitments to the Augustinians. The first is the One Mind One Heart Society for gifts of $1,000 a year ($2.74 a day); the other is the St. Augustine Society for annual gift commitments of $3,500 ($9.58 a day). More information will be forthcoming in our news magazine and on our website. In the past year, over 2,000 donors made over 3,400 gifts to support the Province’s major undertakings in vocations, our retired and infirm men, and our missions in Peru. What Is The Restless Hearts Society? St. Augustine, known for his profound contemplation and his devotion and love of God, once said, "You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You." This one sentence speaks to the restlessness, challenges and sufferings that accompany those who have included the Augustinians in their wills and estate plans. People like you, while journeying through this life grappling with their own restlessness have taken the time to make a significant and generous gift to help the Augustinians. Previously, donors making bequests or other such planned gifts were honored in The Good Counsel Legacy organization. The Restless Hearts Society will honor any past planned giving honors meeting the Society’s criteria for membership.
