Le er from the Prior Provincial Very Rev. Thomas R. McCarthy, O.S.A. Dear Friends, It is good that we are here! And I am especially glad to be greeting you for the first time from the pages of the Midwest Augustinian magazine.

As I begin serving as Prior Provincial of the Midwest Augustinians, I do so with gratitude for my brother friars, for all who share in our ministries, and for each of you who supports our mission through your prayers and generosity.

Throughout my years in schools, parishes, vocation ministry, and retreats, I've learned that God is always at work, o en in unexpected ways. That gives me great hope for our Province and for the Church.

In these pages, you'll find stories of men beginning their lives as Augustinian friars and making their first profession of vows, you'll read about ministries that continue to make a difference around the province, and see the many ways our communities are living the Gospel each day. Together, these stories remind us that our mission is ever-growing and essential.

I'm especially glad to welcome our brothers who were living in Crown Point, Indiana, back to Chicago. Having these friars closer to home so they can enjoy a closer physical proximity to many of our apostolates was one of my first priorities as Provincial. Thank you to everyone who came together to help make this a reality.

St. Bernard Parish Enjoys Men's Club Fishing Derby The St. Bernard Parish Men's Club in Homer Glen held its Annual Fishing Derby last Saturday to great success. Over 100 children and adults gathered for a day of friendly competition in shared community.

The fish were biting: Dominick Zaker took first prize with the biggest catch of the day, a ten-inch bass. Two other competitors caught eighteen fish each and another pair reeled in seventeen each. The event was made possible by the generosity of several local sponsors, including Meijer, Jack Lebert, Home Depot, McDonald's, and Jewel, whose support helped create a memorable and welcoming atmosphere

The enthusiasm and smiles on the faces of children and adults alike were a testament to the

power of simple, joyful community gatherings. The Men's Club looks forward to seeing everyone back at the pond next year.

St. Rita Parish Holds Solemnity of Sacred Heart Parade On Friday, June 12, the faithful of St. Rita of Cascia Parish and St. Clare of Montefalco Chapel came together to celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the highlight of June in the Catholic liturgical calendar.

The Solemnity commemorates our Lord's appearance to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1673, during which He revealed His Heart as a symbol of His boundless love for humanity and called all people to respond with devotion and prayer. Pope Pius IX officially established the feast for the universal Church in 1856, and it is celebrated each year on the third Friday a er Pentecost. The parish marked the occasion with a joyful procession, bringing the celebration 4

AROUND THE PROVINCE Providence Catholic High School Students Visit Italy Students from Providence Catholic High School recently had the experience of a lifetime on a trip to Italy. Organized by Ms. Klod, the tours ranged from breathtaking cathedrals to ancient structures like the Colosseum to world-famous works of art and architecture. Each stop offered students the chance to immerse themselves in centuries of history, architecture, and culture.

Italy's rich Catholic heritage was on full display throughout the journey, offering a living connection to the faith and tradition that underlies a Providence Catholic education. The trip was not only

an educational adventure but a formative experience that helped shape students’ perspective and created lasting memories. As the school notes, learning extends far

beyond the classroom, and this journey embodied that conviction.

St. Rita High School Wins First State Baseball Championship In a game that will be remembered for generations, the St. Rita Mustangs claimed the school's first-ever IHSA Class 3A State Baseball Championship on June 13, defeating Triad 12–11 in eight exciting innings. The road to the title was anything but easy: a er leading 11–4 through five innings, St. Rita saw Triad rally to tie the game in the seventh. They were aided by an umpire ruling that nullified what appeared to be the final out and extended the contest. Following an hour-long rain delay, Vinny Stubitsch delivered the championship-winning sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to score JJ Quinlan and seal the victory. Head coach John Nee, speaking to the Chicago SunTimes, credited the team's unity: "They believed in something bigger than themselves." The Mustangs finished 30–12 on the season. It was a hard-fought, historic triumph for the entire St. Rita community that has been covered by local and national publications including the Sun-Times and Sports Illustrated.

AROUND THE PROVINCE Austin Alumni Association Golf Outing Celebrates Tradition

The Austin Alumni Association hosted its 26th Annual Golf Outing on the day a er Father's Day, welcoming 127 alumni for a day of fellowship, golf and celebration. Despite an overnight rainstorm, participants enjoyed beautiful weather as they gathered for lunch, golf, dinner and awards.

This year's outing celebrated several milestone reunions, including the 70th anniversary of Austin's first graduating

Class of 1956, the 60th anniversary of the Class of 1966 and the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1976. Although Austin Catholic Prep Detroit graduated just 22 classes before the school's closure, its alumni continue to share a strong sense of community and camaraderie throughout metropolitan Detroit.

Since the outing's inception, the Austin Alumni Association has contributed more than $125,000 to

the Augustinian Missions in Peru in memory of Fr. Edward Chapman , O.S.A. and to the scholarship fund at Austin Catholic High School in Chesterfield.

The association's next event will be its annual Memorial Mass honoring deceased students and faculty of Austin Catholic Prep Detroit at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at St. Clare of Montefalco Church. A reception with light refreshments will follow in the Vineyard Room.

Friars participate in "ForMission" program from RFC

In June 2026, Fr. Jeff Raths, O.S.A., Fr. Sam Joutras, O.S.A., and Fr. Stephen Isley, O.S.A., joined the rest of their cohort for the summer session of the "ForMission" program from the Religious Formation Conference.

The ForMission program is a twoyear hybrid in-person and remote 6

course of study. During the program, participants learn from presenters from theological schools, religious congregations, and organizations that support the work and ministry of religious formation.

Coursework includes study of scripture, interculturality, ecclesiology, The Midwest Augustinian

spirituality, formation skills, and other valuable lessons for formators.

The Religious Formation Conference's mission is to educate and support formators by providing resources, services, and experiences.

AROUND THE PROVINCE St. Turibius Parish A ends Windy City Thunderbolts Game Parishioners from St. Turibius Parish in Chicago recently gathered for a night out at a Windy City Thunderbolts game, enjoying some summer fun and good company together.

The outing brought together a large group of parishioners for an evening of baseball, laughter, and community, serving as a reminder that parish life extends well beyond Sunday Mass. The Windy City Thunderbolts, a professional independent league team based in the Chicago area, provide a fun and family-friendly atmosphere well-suited to gatherings like this one.

Events like this embody the Augustinian spirit of community and togetherness that animates parish life: the simple joy of sharing an ordinary evening with the people who make up your faith family.

Congratulations to St. Turibius for fostering a faithful and funfilled community. It was an enjoyable experience for all who joined in for a great night at the ballpark.

Fr. Homero Sánchez Interview on Magnifica Humanitas In a recent episode of La Hora Católica: Misa y Más, Fr. Homero Sánchez, O.S.A., pastor of St. Barnabas and Christ the King Parishes, sat down with host Alejandro Castillo to discuss Pope Leo XIV's encyclical Magnifica Humanitas. Fr. Homero explained that the encyclical, published on the 135th anniversary of Rerum Novarum, addresses the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and its implications for human dignity, much as Leo XIII responded to the Industrial Revolution in his own time.

At its heart, Fr. Homero emphasized, the encyclical is a call to remember what it means to be human. Technology is not inherently evil, but becomes ethically problematic when it displaces human relationships, excludes the poor, or is weaponized. The family, he noted, is presented in the document as the essential nucleus of human life and connection.

Fr. Homero invited viewers to read the encyclical for themselves as a guide to navigating the moral challenges of our technological moment.

AROUND THE PROVINCE Cascia Hall Coach Mayberry Gets Lifetime Achievement Award

Coach Mayberry recognized for his achievements

Cascia Hall Preparatory School in Tulsa was proud to celebrate Coach Lee Mayberry this June. Mayberry was named the recipient of the Tulsa World All-World Lifetime Achievement Award at the 10th annual All-World Awards banquet on June 25. The award recognizes individuals whose lifelong contributions to athletics have le a lasting mark, and Coach Mayberry's story is a remarkable one. A former standout at the University of Arkansas and NBA player, Mayberry has dedicated his post-playing career to coaching and mentoring young athletes, including his current role, in which he serves as Boys Basketball Head Coach, Dean of Students, and Assistant Athletic Director at Cascia Hall. From his days as a player to his impact as a coach,

mentor, and educator, he has consistently modeled the values of service, excellence, and dedication to the next generation.

Cascia Hall is grateful for the leadership and example he brings to the school community every day.

Pizza-Making Staff Development Day at St. Jude Parish The parish and school staff of St. Jude Church and St. Jude School in New Lenox recently came together for a delicious Staff Development Day activity: a pizza-making class led by instructors Jason and Lara.

Sixteen pizzas and plenty of memories were made as staff members rolled up their sleeves, dusted off their hands, and discovered the joy of cra ing something together from scratch.

Events like this remind the St. Jude community that the learning together can also be an important part of the faith experience — even something as simple as making a pizza. Sharing a meal, even one you've made yourself, is one of the oldest and most human forms of togetherness.

A big thank you to Jason and Lara for leading the group through such a fun and memorable experience, and to all the St. Jude staff who brought their enthusiasm to the occasion.

AROUND THE PROVINCE Fr. Jack Tierney featured in Knights of Columbus Magazine Fr. Jack Tierney, O.S.A., was recently featured in Columbia Magazine, the magazine of the Knights of Columbus. This article appeared in the July 2026 issue of Columbia and is reprinted with permission of the Knights of Columbus, New Haven, Connecticut.

As a young man growing up in Wisconsin, I found myself longing for eternal truth. But like so many others, I sought satisfaction in things that do not last. Eventually, I learned about religious communities online and began to discern what God was working on in my heart.

St. Augustine of Hippo was a companion who taught me that our task as Christians is to love rightly. When I first visited the Augustinians, I was struck by their joy, friendship and zeal.

I wanted to share in that way of life, and they invited me to join them. With the Holy Spirit’s inspiration and a dose of

humility, I was ready to be formed in the school of love.

Our charism is lived through interiority and friendship. Cultivating the interior life is a treasure, where we discover our restless heart and God’s

grace guiding us in conversion. This gi is shared in community, where we grow in accountability, charity and joy.

Together, we search for God, who alone can fulfill the deepest desires of the human heart.

Villanova Establishes Pope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal Villanova University has established the Pope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal, a new international honor that will recognize individuals whose leadership has advanced sustainability, ecological responsibility, and integral human development. The inaugural medal will be presented by the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, during the Villanova International Sustainability Conference in Rome this October 2026.

“The Pope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal reflects a deeply held belief at Villanova University: that care for our common home and care for one another are inseparable,” said Villanova University President the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD. “By recognizing leaders whose work advances both environmental

stewardship and the common good, we hope to inspire meaningful and lasting impact in communities around the world.”

P E RU V I A N V I C A R I AT E U P DAT E S Bust of Pope Leo XIV makes its way home to Trujillo, Peru A bronze bust of Pope Leo XIV that first drew a ention in Chicago in February completed its intended journey in July 2026, taking its place in Trujillo, Peru, where the Holy Father spent decades serving as an Augustinian missionary, pastor, and formator.

Fr. Tony Pizzo, O.S.A., blessed the bust during its installation in Peru, and was joined by Thomas O'Neill and Mary Ann Kennedy-O'Neill who commissioned and oversaw the transportation and installation of the sculpture in honor of their son, Thomas Patrick O'Neill III. The sculpture is one of three identical busts commissioned and created by internationally renowned Catholic sculptor Timothy Schmalz shortly a er Pope Leo's election to the papacy.

The first was unveiled at Catholic Theological Union (CTU) in Chicago in February 2026, celebrating the institution where then-Fr. Robert Prevost, O.S.A., earned his Master of Divinity in 1982. Its twin was always destined for the Augustinian community in Trujillo, linking the city where Pope Leo studied for ministry with the city where he lived it.

The third sculpture was acquired by the Vatican in January and placed it in the apostolic nunciature in Washington among other papal depictions.

The bronze work captures Pope Leo with a warm, welcoming expression. Beneath his right shoulder, Schmalz incorporated an image of St. Augustine, a subtle reminder of the Holy Father's lifelong identity as an Augustinian friar. Schmalz completed the original clay sculpture within days of Pope Leo's election before it underwent the months-long process of bronze casting. He has described the piece as reflecting "hope and joy," 10

emotions he sought to capture at the beginning of the new pontificate.

While the Chicago installation honored Pope Leo's theological formation, the companion bust carries even deeper significance for the people of northern Peru.

Before serving as Bishop of Chiclayo and later being called to leadership of the worldwide Augustinian Order and the Vatican, Fr. Robert Prevost spent many years ministering in Trujillo. There he taught seminarians, formed young Augustinians, served in parish ministry, and accompanied communities through years marked by political violence and social unrest.

According to Fr. John Lydon, O.S.A., who lived alongside the future pope for nearly a decade, the Augustinian community chose to remain with the people despite terrorist threats and instability, sharing both the hardships and hopes of the local Church.

The arrival of the twin bust offers a lasting tribute to that chapter of Pope Leo's life. Rather than commemorating only his election as pope, it recognizes The Midwest Augustinian

the missionary years that shaped his pastoral identity and forged enduring relationships with the people of Peru.

Together, the two sculptures form a powerful symbol of Pope Leo XIV's journey. One stands in Chicago, where his theological education prepared him for priestly ministry.

The other stands in Trujillo, where that education became a life of service among the people he came to love.

Separated by thousands of miles but united in purpose, the twin busts reflect the enduring bond between the Midwest Augustinians and their Peruvian mission—a relationship that helped form a missionary, an Augustinian, and ultimately, the first American pope.

P E RU V I A N V I C A R I AT E U P DAT E S Pope Leo XIV: 44 Years of a "Yes" That Keeps Bearing Fruit On June 19, the Augustinian Missionaries in Peru joined Augustinians and Catholics worldwide in celebrating the 44th anniversary of the priestly ordination of Pope Leo XIV. On that date in 1982, a 26-year-old Robert Francis Prevost was ordained a priest of the Order of Saint Augustine at the Augustinian College of Santa Monica in Rome, just steps from what would one day become his home as Cardinal and then as Pope.

Archbishop Jean Jadot presided at the ordination.

On the commemorative holy card that marked the occasion, the young Father Prevost chose a 15th-century Russian icon of the Last Supper and words drawn from Sermon 339 of Saint Augustine: “I cannot feed you with ordinary bread, but this Word is your portion. I feed you with the same table that feeds me. I am your servant.”

Not long a er his ordination, Father Prevost was sent as a missionary to Peru, where he spent nearly two decades in service to the local Church. There, he le behind, as the Augustinian community in Trujillo recalls, lasting marks of faith, closeness, and hope. It is a legacy that continues

to bear fruit in that community today.

As the Midwest Augustinians join in gratitude for the forty-four years of priestly service that have led from that chapel in Rome to the Chair of Peter, we pray for our brother and Pope and give thanks for a life given wholly to God and to God's people.

"Yes," Again: Fr. Abanto and Fr. Marín Renew Vows in Peru On June 16, the Augustinian Missionary community in Peru gathered to celebrate the renewal of vows by Fr. Luis Estuardo Abanto Casas, O.S.A., and Fr. Cesar Emmanuel Corrales Marín, O.S.A. In a ceremony marked by prayer and the warmth of fraternal community, both friars reaffirmed their commitment to follow Christ along the paths of poverty, chastity, and obedience, the three evangelical counsels that lie at the heart of religious life.

The vow renewal is an annual moment in the Augustinian formation journey.

As the Augustinian Missionaries in Peru reflected, vocation is something cultivated day by day with faithfulness, brotherhood, and trust

in God. These are qualities that do not come automatically but are chosen again and again in the ordinary circumstances of community life.

Four Men Profess First Vows as Augustinian Friars One year ago, four Augustinian Novices entered the front door of the Novitiate in Radnor, PA. They each came from different places, different careers, and different life experiences, each carrying his own story of how God had led him to the Augustinians.

On August 1, 2026, those vocation stories converged at the altar of St. Thomas of Villanova Parish at Villanova University.

Standing in front of family members, friends, and their Augustinian brothers, Br. Brent Faubert, O.S.A., Br. Jugie "John" Bernardo, O.S.A., Br. Jun Maranan, O.S.A., and Br. Kurt Bragg, O.S.A., professed First Vows during Mass celebrated by Fr. Joseph Farrell, O.S.A., Prior General of the worldwide Augustinian Order. By professing the vows of poverty, chastity. and obedience, the four men entered the 12

next stage of formation as professed Augustinian friars.

Each new Augustinian friar arrived at that moment by a different path. Br. Kurt's search for truth led him into the Catholic Church before he discovered a call to religious life. Br. Brent left behind a successful career after realizing that God was inviting him to serve in a different way. Br. Jun found in the Augustinian community a place where his desire to give himself FRPSOHWHO\ WR *RG FRXOG ÁRXULVK alongside brothers who shared the same calling. Br. John's vocation carried him from the Philippines to the Midwest Province, where prayer, fraternity, and formation steadily FRQÀUPHG WKH SDWK EHIRUH KLP Over the past year of studies as novices, those individual stories became one shared experience.

Together, they prayed the Liturgy The Midwest Augustinian

of the Hours, studied the Rule and Constitutions, learned the traditions of the Order, and settled into the daily rhythm of Augustinian community life. The novitiate is designed to teach and to shape a way of living that continues long after the year itself has ended.

"There are many opportunities during the novitiate year to be formed," Fr. Farrell said during his homily. "A lot of that formation involves repetition, because we know that without repetition, there's no formation."

Among those daily practices, he said, none is more important than prayer.

"That rhythm of prayer is what carries us throughout our religious lives," Fr. Farrell said. "It becomes just as important to you as sleeping, eating and, if I dare to say, breathing."

He encouraged the newly professed friars to protect the silence they learned to appreciate during the novitiate. As the responsibilities of ministry, study and community life grow, silence and interiority remains the place where religious men continue to listen for God's voice amid the demands of everyday life.

Following the homily, each novice came forward to profess his vows publicly before God and the Church. One by one, they promised to live poverty, chastity, and obedience according to the Rule of St. Augustine and the Constitutions of the Order.

the embrace of peace from their Augustinian brothers.

Fr. Farrell reminded the congregation that those vows aren’t limitations or obligations, but are a ZD\ RI OLYLQJ WKH SURPLVHV ÀUVW PDGH at Baptism, freeing religious men to love God, one another, and the Church with an undivided heart.

Before the liturgy continued, he invited everyone present to remember that a vocation is never lived alone.

"As our brothers profess their vows this morning," he said, "I invite all of you to pray for them."

For the Midwest Augustinians, the day was both joyful and hopeful.

profession of vows renews the life of the Order, bringing new voices, new gifts, and new energy into a community that has served the Church for generations. It is also a reminder that God continues to call men from every background to follow Christ through the Augustinian way of life.

Camp Restless: From Strangers to a Christian Community

There is something remarkable about the first and last moments of Camp Restless. At the beginning of the week, parents arrive with young people who are o en nervous, uncertain, and, for the most part, complete strangers to one another.

Six days later, those same parents return to witness something entirely different. The young people they entrusted to us have become a genuine Christian community.

Camp Restless is the Midwest Augustinians' only ministry dedicated specifically to youth evangelization and formation. More than a summer camp, it is a place where faith is lived, friendships are formed, and young people discover the joy of Christian community through the lens of Augustinian spirituality.

This year's camp included several exciting additions. New excursions brought the fun and adventure of a traditional summer camp while strengthening friendships through shared experiences. Recreation and formation worked hand in hand, creating opportunities for trust, laughter, and lasting memories.

Formation also grew in meaningful

ways through the collaboration of Augustinians, Br. Nathan, and the sisters. Rather than being confined to presentations, faith became part of the rhythm of each day through conversation, prayer, reflection, and authentic encounters with Christ.

One of the week's most meaningful additions was our evening Unitas time.

As the day came to a close, campers gathered outdoors around a bonfire and at conversation tables with the friars and sisters. Stories were shared, questions were asked, and friendships grew naturally. Before long, young people and religious were pulling out guitars and other instruments, singing together, laughing, and simply enjoying one another's company. What began as an evening gathering became the heart of Camp Restless, where strangers became friends and friends became a Christian community.

The transformation became unmistakably visible at the closing Mass.

Parents who had entrusted their children to Camp Restless returned to witness something extraordinary. They watched as their sons and daughters confidently proclaimed the Scriptures, served as

liturgical ministers, led the music, sang with joy, and participated fully in the Eucharistic celebration. More importantly, they witnessed young people encouraging one another, praying together, and celebrating their faith with confidence.

Many parents shared how deeply moved they were by the transformation they witnessed in just six days.

That is the mission of Camp Restless.

The week is filled with recreation, prayer, formation, and friendship, but its greatest accomplishment cannot be measured by activities alone. It is found in lives touched

by Christ, friendships rooted in faith, and young people who leave knowing they belong—to one another, to the Church, and to the Augustinian family.

As Camp Restless continues to grow, it remains one of the Midwest Augustinians' most meaningful ministries. We look forward with gratitude to welcoming another generation of young people to discover faith, friendship, and the joy of walking together in the spirit of St. Augustine.

St. Clare of Montefalco: Clare of the Cross Among A mong the h great gr t wo women off th the he Augustinian tradition, Saint Clare of Montefalco holds an important place not only for the holiness of her life, but also for the extraordinary sign God left in her heart at her death.

Clare was born around 1268 in Montefalco, a small hill town in Umbria, Italy. From an early age, she was drawn to contemplative life, joining the cloistered community that her sister Joan had established.

The two sisters spent long hours in prayer together, and Clare professed her religious vows under the Rule of Saint Augustine as a young woman.

life were not easy. For eleven years, Clare endured a profound interior trial, which included temptations, an inability to find consolation in prayer, and a deep fear that God had abandoned her. It was a dark night that tested and deepened her faith, and one that would have been recognizable to many of the great mystics of the Church.

When her sister Joan, who had served as Abbess of the community, died, the sisters turned to Clare to lead them. She refused at first, insisting she was unworthy of the office. But the community persisted, and Clare eventually accepted. She quickly proved to be a wise and loving Abbess until her death on August 17, 1308. Her governance was marked by holiness, wisdom, and charity, and her reputation spread well beyond the walls of the convent.

Bishops, priests, theologians, judges, and ordinary laypeople alike came to her seeking counsel.

was always rooted in Scripture and almost always right.

Clare is sometimes called "Clare of the Cross" for the intensity of her devotion to the Passion of Christ.

She frequently said that she carried the Cross in her heart. At her death, a post-mortem examination of her heart revealed something extraordinary: within it were found physical representations of the Cross and other symbols of Christ's Passion. It was a visible sign of what her whole life had expressed: a love for the suffering Christ so complete that it had become, quite literally, part of her.

Her feast day is celebrated on August 17. Her remains rest at the Augustinian Convent in Montefalco, where pilgrims continue to visit her to this day. Saint Clare of Montefalco is a powerful witness to the depth of Augustinian contemplative life and to the truth that genuine love of God transforms the one who loves.

Installed during the Province's Ordinary Provincial Chapter at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel in Chicago on June 10, 2026, Fr. Tom now assumes responsibility for leading the Augustinian friars serving throughout the Midwestern United States, Canada, and the Vicariate of Chulucanas in northern Peru.

His Provincial term will continue until 2030.

proud son of Chicago's South Side, Fr. Tom brings more than three decades of experience in education, parish ministry, vocations, administration, and leadership.

A graduate of St. Adrian School and St. Rita of Cascia High School, he earned a bachelor's degree in Communication Arts from Villanova University and a master's degree in Educational Administration from Lewis University before completing his Master of Divinity at Catholic Theological Union.

Since entering the Augustinian Order in 1983, Fr. Tom has served in a wide variety of ministries.

He taught theology at Providence The Midwest Augustinian

Catholic High School and devoted 21 years to St. Rita of Cascia High School, where he served as teacher, campus minister, principal, president, and chairman of the Board of Directors. His ministry has also included service at Villanova University, the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization in Rome, and Marylake Shrine in Ontario, Canada, where Pope Francis named him a Missionary of Mercy in 2018.

“I’m excited to walk with our friars as we continue to serve our community in our apostolates,” said Fr. Tom. “Our future as a Province and as an Order is bright because our foundation is strong.”

Perhaps best known throughout the Province for his work promoting vocations, Fr. Tom has spent nearly two decades accompanying young men discerning religious life.

His joyful, approachable style has introduced countless people to the Augustinian charism of community, friendship, and the restless search for God. Earlier this year, Fr. Tom was also honored as Grand Marshal of Chicago's St. Patrick's Day Parade, recognizing both his Irish heritage and his longstanding service to the Church and the city.

now begins a four-year term guiding the Province's ministries, communities, and apostolic works. Building upon the legacy of his predecessors including Fr. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A., who he succeeds, Fr. Tom will help lead the Midwest Augustinians as they continue to proclaim the Gospel, create communities, and serve all of God’s people.

Close to Home: Retired Augustinian Friars Move to Chicago For Augustinians, community is the foundation of religious life, and central to the Order’s charism. When Augustinians profess their vows, they make a lifelong commitment to prayer, fraternity, and caring for one another. This summer, the Midwest Augustinians took a significant step to strengthen that commitment by relocating retired friars from Saint Anthony Assisted Living in Crown Point, Indiana, to Smith Village in Chicago's Beverly neighborhood, bringing them closer to the physical location of the Province ministries they have faithfully served for decades.

The move marks the beginning of a new chapter for eleven retired friars, who now live just minutes from the Province's main offices, St. Rita of Cascia High School, St. Clare of Montefalco Friary, St. Turibius, St. Rita, and St. Clare, and many of the ministries where these friars spent their lives in service. More importantly, it places them back within easy reach 18

of their Augustinian brothers, family members, former parishioners, students, and friends.

"The main reason I wanted us to make this move was to get our guys back in this area," said Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., Prior Provincial. "The reason we're moving is to get our friars closer to the other friars."

When the votes were counted in the Provincial election and Fr. Tom was selected in December 2025, this move was the first major project on his mind.

Just days a er the vote was counted and affirmed, he started pu ing the project in motion.

Throughout the summer, friars, staff members, and volunteers packed rooms, transported belongings, furnished apartments, and helped residents se le into their new home.

O.S.A., Br. Jeremy Welch, O.S.A., and Novice Michael Bourke along with Augustinian laypeople like Diane Mrozek, Luis and Miriam Espinosa, and others involved in the care of these friars.

By all accounts it was a true community effort.

"Everyone's very happy," Br. Nick said a er the move. "Overall, everything just seems to be a real increase. People seem to be adjusting well - overall it's a really good thing."

While several senior living communities were considered during the discernment process, Smith Village quickly emerged as the right fit. Located only minutes from the Provincial Center, the nonprofit community offers independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and memory care, allowing friars to remain together as their healthcare needs change over time.

The other residents at Smith Village are also already familiar with many Augustinian ministries – whether they are or were parishioners at Augustinian

churches, graduates from Augustinian schools, or knew someone who was.

The location also opens new opportunities for the Province to remain actively involved in the lives of its elder brothers.

Already, Augustinian friars have begun celebrating Sunday Mass at Smith Village, expanding the spiritual life available not only to the retired friars but to the broader resident community as well. Plans are underway to increase the Province's presence through additional Masses, Communion services, student visits, social activities, and other opportunities for interaction between generations of Augustinians.

Fr. Don Lewandowski, O.S.A., one of the Augustinians in residence who will be helping to celebrate masses, says that everyone has been very welcoming at Smith Village.

"Everyone has been very kind," Fr. Don said. "Both the staff and the other people living here have been very kind."

Fr. Tom hopes the community will become a place where younger friars, students, and benefactors naturally gather.

"I've already talked about starting a games club," he said, envisioning students from St. Rita and other Augustinian schools spending time playing chess, checkers, cards, or simply visiting with the retired friars.

"When you're doing that, you're also

going to be talking and seeing the wisdom of these friars."

The move also reflects an important belief about religious life: retirement does not mean stepping away from one's vocation.

"It's not just about their healthcare," Fr. Tom said. "It's also about their spiritual care."

Even as active ministry changes with age, retired friars continue serving the Province through prayer, encouragement, friendship, and the witness of lives faithfully lived. By bringing them closer to the Province's ministries and communities, the Midwest Augustinians hope those gi s will remain a visible and vibrant part of Augustinian life.

Br. Nick believes the difference will be felt in countless small but meaningful ways.

Friends and family will find it easier to visit. Friars traveling between Augustinian ministries can stop in for lunch or conversation. Residents will be able to participate more readily in Province celebrations and gatherings without the long drive that previously separated them from the life of the community.

For Fr. Tom, those everyday moments are exactly what the move was meant to create.

living at a distance, he envisions a home where the generations of the Province naturally intersect: where young friars seek wisdom from those who came before them, where students encounter men whose lives have been dedicated to serving the Church, and where longtime benefactors can continue visiting the friars they have known for years.

"This is something for all of us," Fr. Tom said. "We're honoring the intent of our donors to take care of our guys in a very loving way, in a very healthy way, and in a very spiritually healthy way."

In many ways, the move to Smith Village is about much more than a new address. It is a tangible expression of one of the core values of Augustinian life: that community is not simply where friars begin their vocation, but where they continue to belong throughout every stage of it. By bringing our retired brothers closer to home, the Midwest Augustinians are ensuring that the bonds of fraternity, prayer, and shared life remain as strong in retirement as they were in active ministry.

Augustine on Friendship Friendship occupies a central place in Augustinian spirituality.

While many people are familiar with the Christian emphasis on communal charity and love of neighbor, the spiritual heritage of St. Augustine of Hippo frames friendship as one of the primary ways human beings pursue truth and holiness together.

Augustine’s own relationships profoundly shaped his theology, and in the many centuries since, the Order of Saint Augustine has continued to emphasize friendship as a foundation of religious and communal life.

Augustine’s reflections on friendship appear most famously in his autobiographical work, Confessions.

As a young student before his 20

conversion to Catholicism, Augustine developed intense but ultimately unstable friendships, including one with a Manichaean intellectual in Thagaste and another with an unruly, hedonistic group of men in Carthage.

The former friend’s early death caused him overwhelming grief, an experience he recounts as spiritually formative. The loss forced him to reconsider the nature of love and a achment, and he would ultimately be confronted with the truth that friendships must be grounded in God rather than treated as ultimate goods themselves.

This insight became foundational for Augustine’s theology of friendship.

Far from diminishing friendship’s The Midwest Augustinian

importance in the Christian life, he argued that ordering friendships towards the divine made them even more valuable. He wrote that true friendship arises when people are united by a shared love of God, describing it as something “welded between souls” by divine charity. In other words, friendship is not merely an emotional bond (of the kind that led him astray in his youth) but a spiritual relationship oriented toward truth and virtue.

Once he became Catholic, Augustine began to form such friendships, notably with Alypius.

Alypius and Augustine would walk the path of faith together. They both ultimately became bishops, and

"one mind and one heart intent upon God" their friendship provided each with encouragement and strength as they helped guide the Church through the tumultuous decline of the Roman Empire.

Augustine’s writings — and his life itself — form one of the earliest Christian “theologies of friendship.”

His insights would also find their way into his famous Rule, which has inspired and continues to sustain many religious orders throughout the world, including the Augustinians.

In the Rule of St. Augustine, the primary purpose of a religious community is to “live together in unity… with one mind and one heart intent upon God.” Unlike some early monastic traditions, which tended to emphasize solitude, Augustine envisioned communities of people who actively shared life together. The Rule stresses mutual care, shared possessions, and common prayer. The goal is not individual perfection in isolation but collective growth toward holiness.

For Augustine, friendship and community were inseparable, and as people engaged with life together, friendship became not only a source of joy and consolation but also a school of virtue.

The Augustinian Order, formally organized in the thirteenth century but rooted in Augustine’s monastic ideals, continues to emphasize fraternity and shared life today. The Order’s traditional mo o expresses Augustine’s vision: anima una et cor unum in Deum—“one mind and one heart intent upon God.” In practical terms, Augustinian friars structure their lives around community friendship through shared daily life, intellectual companionship,

and mutual spiritual support — in other words, through the Order’s modern mo o of “unity, truth, and love.”

Friars typically live in communal houses where they pray, eat, and spend time together. This ordinary rhythm offers much time to foster meaningful friendships and deep conversations in the shared pursuit of truth. These discussions, along with bonds of trust built on shared faith, not only support the Augustinian mission of education but also allow Augustinian brothers to support each other on the journey to become more like Christ.

This emphasis on fraternity shapes the Order’s pastoral style, as well. Because Augustinian spirituality centers on communal life, friars typically maintain strong relationships with the communities they serve. Many work in parishes, schools, and universities, where they cultivate ongoing friendships with teachers, parishioners, and other collaborators.

This approach reflects Augustine’s belief that friendship should always expand beyond itself. Authentic friendship is not insular; rather, it fosters generosity toward others. As a result, Augustinian communities o en serve as hubs of intellectual engagement and charitable service within the broader Church.

For centuries, many faithful Catholics have discovered the Augustinian mode of friendship as a delightful part of their vocation in the Order. But laypeople can also learn from Augustine’s example.

By Fr. John Lydon, O.S.A. Looking at Pope Leo’s short pontificate to date, we can easily see some of the central concerns that arise as he reads the “signs of the times”, and help the Church discern God’s wisdom in responding to those challenges.

One of these is the Migrant and Refugee Crisis, which has o en become a political lightning rod in many countries of Europe and North America. The Pope’s message is a direct critique of the presentday, ever-narrowing perspective of how to respond to this global phenomenon.

His recent visit to the Canary Islands, his visit on July 4 to Lampedusa, and his recent visit to Mother Cabrini’s birthplace, all point to the importance this issue has in his vision of the gospel’s mandate for the Church.

It is his visit to the Canary Islands that was his most extensive sign to date about his challenging the public rhetoric around the issue of migrants and refugees.

The Pope said that we must address the "silent shipwreck that occurs a er arrival: being le alone in a city, without a voice, without ties, work or a sense of security, and exposed to those who take advantage of vulnerability."

It is tempting to respond only by managing emergencies as they surface.

However, we cannot limit ourselves to temporary fixes; we need compassionate systemic change. We need to look at and alleviate the causes of migration, and then treat with compassion those that arrive whose faces reflect the very face of the suffering Christ.

Below the surface of the images of arriving migrants are the complex causes that need to be addressed. Below the popular political discourses against migrants, we need to go deeper and look at the fear that drives us to responses far from what is asked by our faith.

As the Pope powerfully reminded us in his visit to Tenerife, Canary Islands: "a human conscience, and even more so a Christian conscience, cannot remain indifferent in the face of these graveyards of the sea. Every life lost on these routes is a failure for the human family."

In his encyclical Magnifica humanitas, Pope Leo XIV provides the moral compass for this transformation.

He states, "A litmus test for social justice today is the treatment of migrants, refugees and those forced to move due to poverty, violence, climate change and environmental disasters. The way a society treats them reveals whether its sense of justice is driven by fear or by the spirit of fraternity" (Magnifica humanitas).

Convinced that academic institutions have a moral imperative to join together, to become a “constellation of hope” as the Pope has stated, means that we have to look together to address the causes of migration and the best way to integrate migrants into their new homes. We need to be moved to action by the “cry” of those who suffer.

We saw it embodied in the Canary Islands through testimonies like that of Ousman Umar, who survived a brutal five-year trek through eight countries, crossing the desert and sea starting at just 12 years old, watching the vast majority of his companions perish along the way.

opportunities in his home village in Ghana, so that other youths do not feel forced to risk their lives by migrating.

By bringing together academics, NGOs, migrants and building partnerships, we strive to build the bridges of dialogue that can result in changes that promote the integration of migrants into society, and that their presence is seen as a blessing for all concerned.

Building those bridges in an integrated way is a particular gi universities and partners can provide. The challenge before us extends well beyond the shores of the Canary Islands.

While Tenerife is currently an epicenter of pain, the shipwreck of human dignity occurs daily across all borders of our common home. The solution to this global crisis will not be achieved through fragmented efforts but by mobilizing a worldwide community united by coresponsibility.

We all share the noble and necessary task of dismantling prejudice and designing the systemic bridges that will lead us to a more just and inclusive future.

As the Pope commanded in his parting words in Spain: "Li up your gaze! Yes, let us turn our eyes to Christ Crucified... and guided by Mary, let us continue our journey with hope!"

Our work to transform the present conditions and mindsets into a be er future for migrants, refugees, and indeed our entire society has only just begun.

See What God is Growing Maryellen Harrington, Director of Lay Engagement Sometimes a Gospel refuses to let go of you. Weeks a er returning from a Mission Cooperative Appeal on behalf of the Midwest Augustinians, I still find myself reflecting on Jesus' parable of the wheat and the weeds.

At first glance, the field in Jesus' parable appears overrun with weeds.

The servants are eager to pull them up immediately. Yet the master sees something they do not. He knows there is wheat growing too, and he patiently waits for the harvest. It would be easy to focus only on the weeds when reflecting on the challenges faced by our friends in Peru. To only see poverty, political instability, natural disasters, and the many challenges the people of northern Peru face. Those realities are real. But they are not the whole story.

The Gospel invites us to look for the wheat.

The wheat is found in children receiving an education grounded in faith. It is found in vibrant parish communities, dedicated catechists, families whose faith remains steadfast despite hardship, and young Peruvian 24

men answering God's call to become Augustinians. God's Kingdom has been quietly growing there for more than sixty years, o en in ways the world never notices.

That is the story we have the privilege of sharing when we go out to give Mission Cooperative Appeals.

The appeal certainly raises the financial resources that help sustain our ministries in Peru. Every gi makes it possible for the Augustinians to continue walking alongside the people of northern Peru through education, pastoral ministry, leadership formation, and the daily work of proclaiming the Gospel.

But the appeal is about more than financial support. It is also an opportunity to introduce people to the Augustinian family—to share not only what we do, but who we are.

At the heart of our spirituality is the desire to live with one heart and one mind intent upon God. That vision shapes the way we minister, the way we accompany others, and the way we understand mission itself.

Whether serving in Peru or in our own neighborhoods, our calling is the same: to help build a Church united in Christ.

Perhaps that is one of the quiet gi s of a Mission Cooperative Appeal. It not only strengthens our ministries in Peru but also gives us the opportunity to share the Augustinian charism with people who may never have encountered it before. Through the story of Peru, they also discover a community striving to live with one heart and one mind intent upon God. The parable of the wheat and the weeds remind us that God's work is o en quieter than we expect. Amid the struggles we readily see, God is patiently bringing forth a harvest. It was a privilege to share a few glimpses of that harvest in Peru and to invite others to become part of the story.

Thank you for supporting the Augustinians Dear Friends, One of the greatest commi ments of Augustinian life is that we care for our friars throughout every stage of life. From the day a man enters formation until his final years, he is surrounded by brothers who pray together, minister together, and support one another as family.

This summer, we reached an important milestone in that commitment.

Our retired friars have moved from Crown Point, Indiana, to their new home at Smith Village in Chicago. While any move is bi ersweet, this transition is an exciting new chapter for the Province. Smith Village offers expanded healthcare services, accessible living spaces, and above all, opportunities for greater social engagement with our local community. These men have spent their lives celebrating the sacraments, teaching in our schools, preaching the Gospel, serving parishes, accompanying the poor, and forming future generations of Augustinians.

Over the past several weeks, countless friars, staff members, and volunteers worked together to make this transition possible. We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make our brothers feel at home from the very first day.

Of course, providing exceptional care for our retired friars is an ongoing commitment. Healthcare, assisted living, and the daily needs of our aging brothers represent one of the Province's most significant responsibilities.

Because our friars have dedicated their lives to serving others, they rely on the generosity of faithful friends like you to help ensure they receive the care they need in retirement.

Patricia R. Kuppe, mother of Sr. Mary Grace Kuppe, O.S.A., Prioress of the Augustinian Nuns in New Lenox, Illinois, died peacefully on June 11, 2026, at the age of 96. A lifelong member of St. Bernade e Parish in Rockford, Illinois, Patricia was devoted to her Catholic faith and volunteered with Meals on Wheels in its early years. She and her late husband, Charles, raised four children and delighted in spending time with their growing family. Patricia was known for her love of baking, travel, card games, reading, and jigsaw puzzles.

Harvey Huebner, uncle of Br. Gary Hresil, O.S.A., died on July 1, 2026, at Alexian Brothers Medical Center. He was 83 years old. Harvey's funeral Mass was celebrated on July 9 at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel in Chicago, followed by burial at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park.

Bernice J. Dodge died on July 2, 2026, at the age of 95. She was the widow of Florian Dodge, who taught at St. Rita of Cascia High School for 42 years, and the sister-in-law of the late Fr. E.J. Dodge, O.S.A. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Bernice was also a longtime member of the Chicago Lithuanian Women’s Club. Her funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Michael Church in Orland Park, followed by burial at St. Casimir Cemetery.

Gilbert Arriaga III, cousin of Br. Joe Ruiz, O.S.A., died unexpectedly on July 15, 2026, in Texas at the age of 40. A devoted father of two daughters, Grace and Freyja, Gilbert was known for his love of family, cooking, the outdoors, and gathering with loved ones, especially during the holidays. He is survived by his daughters, father, grandparents, siblings, and many members of his extended family. His funeral was celebrated on July 27 in Austin, followed by burial at Assumption Cemetery.

Barbara A. Herrmann died on July 26, 2026, at the age of 92. A longtime friend of the Midwest Augustinians, she was a devoted parishioner of Immaculate Conception/St. Henry Parish in St. Louis, where she welcomed and supported generations of Augustinian novices during the Province's years of formation there. She remained closely connected to the friars throughout her life and was recently featured in the St. Louis Review recalling her memories of then-novice Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV.

Carlo Airdo, uncle of OSA Affiliate Michael Airdo, died on July 23, 2026, at the age of 84 following a recent cancer diagnosis. He was the husband of the late Doreen Airdo and is survived by his sons, Carlo Jr. and Nick, his grandchildren, Anthony and Benjamin, his brother, Lawrence, and other members of his family. In accordance with his wishes, private funeral services were held.

Rev. Michael J. O'Connor, O.S.A., died on August 15, 2026, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the age of 84. A professed Augustinian for 65 years and a priest for 55 years, Fr. Michael devoted his life to education, parish ministry, and leadership within the Midwest Augustinians. He served as teacher, pastor, president of St. Rita High School, and held numerous provincial leadership roles, including Vicar Provincial and Vocation Director. For more than two decades, he ministered in healthcare within the Province, offering compassionate care to elderly and infirm friars. Remembered for his selflessness, kindness, and tireless dedication, Fr. Michael will be buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois.

Al comenzar mi servicio como Prior Provincial de los Agustinos del Medio Oeste, lo hago con gratitud hacia mis hermanos frailes, hacia todos los que comparten nuestros ministerios y hacia cada uno de ustedes que apoya nuestra misión a través de sus oraciones y su generosidad.

Homero Sánchez, O.S.A., párroco de las parroquias de San Bernabé y Cristo Rey, conversó con el presentador Alejandro Castillo sobre la encíclica Magnifica Humanitas del papa León XIV. El P. Homero explicó que la encíclica, publicada en el 135.º aniversario de la Rerum Novarum, aborda

el rápido avance de la revolución de la inteligencia artificial en su propia época.

En esencia, enfatizó el P. Homero, la encíclica es un llamado a recordar lo que significa ser humano. La tecnología no es intrínsecamente mala, pero se vuelve éticamente problemática cuando desplaza las relaciones humanas, excluye a los pobres o se utiliza como arma.

La familia, señaló, se presenta en el

documento como el núcleo esencial de la vida y la conexión humanas. El P. Homero invitó a los espectadores a leer la encíclica por sí mismos como guía para afrontar los desafíos morales de nuestra era tecnológica.

El busto del Papa León XIV regresa a su hogar en Trujillo, Perú Un busto de bronce del Papa León XIV, que llamó la atención por primera vez en Chicago en febrero, completó su viaje previsto en julio de 2026 y tomó su lugar en Trujillo, Perú, donde el Santo Padre pasó décadas sirviendo como misionero agustino, párroco y formador.

El P. Tony Pizzo, O.S.A., bendijo el busto durante su instalación en Perú, acompañado por Thomas O’Neill y Mary Ann Kennedy-O’Neill, quienes encargaron y supervisaron el transporte y la instalación de la escultura en honor a su hijo, Thomas Patrick O’Neill III. La escultura es uno de tres bustos idénticos encargados y creados por el escultor católico de renombre internacional Timothy Schmalz poco después de la elección al papado del papa León.

El primero fue presentado en la Unión Teológica Católica (CTU por sus siglas en inglés) de Chicago en febrero de 2026, en homenaje a la institución donde el entonces P. Robert Prevost, O.S.A., obtuvo su Maestría en Teología en 1982. La tercera escultura fue adquirida por el Vaticano en enero y se colocó en la nunciatura apostólica de Washington, junto a otras representaciones papales.

La obra de bronce retrata al papa León con una expresión cálida y acogedora.

Debajo de su hombro derecho, Schmalz incorporó una imagen de San Agustín, un sutil recordatorio de la identidad que el Santo Padre ha tenido toda su vida como fraile agustino. Schmalz terminó la escultura original en arcilla a los pocos días de la elección del papa León, antes de que pasara por el proceso de fundición en bronce, que duró varios meses. Ha descrito la pieza como un reflejo de «esperanza y alegría», emociones que buscó capturar al inicio del nuevo pontificado.

Si bien la instalación de Chicago rindió homenaje a la formación teológica del papa León, el busto complementario tiene un significado aún más profundo para la gente del norte de Perú.

Antes de servir como obispo de Chiclayo y de ser llamado posteriormente al liderazgo de la Orden Agustina mundial y del Vaticano, el padre Robert Prevost pasó muchos años ejerciendo su ministerio en Trujillo. Allí enseñó a seminaristas, formó a jóvenes agustinos, prestó servicio en la pastoral parroquial y acompañó a las comunidades durante años marcados por la violencia política y la inestabilidad social.

Según el P. John Lydon, O.S.A., quien convivió con el futuro papa durante casi una década, la comunidad agustina decidió permanecer junto al pueblo a pesar de las amenazas terroristas y la inestabilidad, compartiendo tanto las dificultades como las esperanzas de la Iglesia local.

La llegada del busto doble constituye un homenaje perdurable a ese capítulo de la vida del papa León. Más que conmemorar únicamente su elección como papa, reconoce los años de labor misionera que moldearon su identidad pastoral y forjaron vínculos duraderos con el pueblo peruano.

Juntas, las dos esculturas forman un poderoso símbolo del recorrido del papa León XIV. Una se encuentra en Chicago, donde su formación teológica lo preparó para el ministerio sacerdotal. La otra se encuentra en Trujillo, donde esa formación se convirtió en una vida de servicio entre el pueblo al que llegó a amar. Separados por miles de kilometros, pero unidos en un mismo propósito, los bustos gemelos reflejan el vínculo duradero entre los agustinos del Medio Oeste y su misión peruana —una relación que ayudó a formar a un misionero, a un agustino y, en última instancia, al primer papa estadounidense.

En la estampa conmemorativa que marcó la ocasión, el joven padre Prevost eligió un ícono ruso del siglo XV de la Última Cena The Midwest Augustinian

y unas palabras extraídas del Sermón 339 de San Agustín: «No puedo alimentarlos con pan común, pero esta Palabra es su porción.

Los alimento de la misma mesa que me alimenta a mí. Soy su siervo».

Poco después de su ordenación, el padre

Prevost fue enviado como misionero a Perú, donde pasó casi dos décadas al servicio de la Iglesia local. Allí dejó, como recuerda la comunidad agustiniana de Trujillo, huellas imborrables de fe, cercanía y esperanza. Es

un legado que sigue dando frutos en esa comunidad hasta el día de hoy.

Mientras los agustinos del Medio Oeste se unen en agradecimiento por los cuarenta y cuatro años de servicio sacerdotal que lo han

llevado desde aquella capilla en Roma hasta la Cátedra de Pedro, oramos por nuestro hermano y Papa y damos gracias por una vida entregada por completo a Dios y al pueblo de Dios.

«Sí», otra vez: el P. Abanto y el P. Marín renuevan sus votos en Perú El 16 de junio, la comunidad de Misioneros Agustinos de Perú se reunió para celebrar la renovación de votos del P. Luis Estuardo Abanto Casas, O.S.A., y del P. César Emmanuel Corrales Marín, O.S.A. En una ceremonia marcada por la oración y la calidez de la comunidad fraterna, ambos frailes reafirmaron su compromiso de seguir a Cristo por los caminos de la pobreza, la

castidad y la obediencia, los tres consejos evangélicos que constituyen el corazón de la vida religiosa.

La renovación de votos es un momento anual en el camino de formación agustiniana.

Como reflexionaron los Misioneros Agustinos de Perú, la vocación es algo que se cultiva día a día con fidelidad, hermandad y confianza en Dios.

Estas son cualidades que no surgen

automáticamente, sino que se eligen una y otra vez en las circunstancias cotidianas de la vida comunitaria.

Los Agustinos del Medio Oeste se unen para felicitar al P. Estuardo y al P. César por este alegre hito y ofrecen sus oraciones para que el Señor continúe fortaleciendo su camino de discernimiento.

Cuatro hombres profesan sus primeros votos como frailes agustinos Hace un año, cuatro novicios agustinos cruzaron la puerta principal del noviciado en Radnor, Pensilvania. Cada uno provenía de lugares distintos, profesiones diferentes y experiencias de vida diversas, y cada uno traía consigo su propia historia de cómo Dios lo había guiado hacia la orden de los agustinos.

El 1 de agosto de 2026, esas historias vocacionales convergieron en el altar de la parroquia de Santo Tomás de Villanova, en la Universidad de Villanova.

De pie frente a sus familiares, amigos y hermanos agustinos, el Hno. Brent Faubert, O.S.A., el Hno. Jugie «John» Bernardo, O.S.A., el Hno. Jun Maranan, O.S.A., y el Hno. Kurt Bragg, O.S.A., profesaron sus primeros votos durante la misa celebrada por el P. Joseph Farrell, O.S.A., prior general de la Orden Agustina mundial. Al profesar los votos de pobreza, castidad y obediencia, los cuatro hombres ingresaron a la siguiente etapa de formación como frailes agustinos profesos.

Cada nuevo fraile agustino llegó a ese momento por un camino diferente. La búsqueda de la verdad llevó al Hno. Kurt a la Iglesia católica antes de descubrir su llamado a la vida religiosa. El Hno. Bent dejó atrás una carrera exitosa al darse cuenta de que Dios lo invitaba a servir de otra manera. El hermano Jun encontró en la comunidad agustina un lugar donde su deseo de entregarse por completo a Dios pudiera florecer junto a hermanos que compartían la misma vocación. La vocación del hermano John lo llevó desde Filipinas hasta la Provincia del Medio Oeste, donde la oración, la fraternidad y la formación confirmaron constantemente

el camino que tenía por delante.

A lo largo del último año de estudios como novicios, esas historias individuales se convirtieron en una experiencia compartida.

Juntos, rezaron la Liturgia de las Horas y se adaptaron al ritmo diario de la vida comunitaria agustina. El noviciado está diseñado para enseñar y forjar un estilo de vida que perdure mucho después de que haya terminado ese año.

«Durante el año de noviciado hay muchas oportunidades para formarse», dijo el P. Farrell durante su homilía. «Gran parte de esa información implica repetición, porque sabemos que sin repetición no hay formación».

Entre esas prácticas diarias, dijo, ninguna es más importante que la oración.

«El ritmo de la oración es lo que nos guía a lo largo de nuestra vida religiosa», dijo el P. Farrell. «Se vuelve tan importante para ti como dormir, comer y, si me atrevo a decirlo, respirar».

Animó a los frailes recién profesos a cuidar el silencio que aprendieron a apreciar durante el noviciado. A medida que aumentan las responsabilidades del ministerio, el estudio y la vida comunitaria, el silencio y la inferioridad siguen siendo el espacio donde los religiosos continúan escuchando la voz de Dios en medio de las exigencias de la vida cotidiana.

Tras la homilía, cada novicio se adelantó para profesar públicamente sus votos ante Dios y la Iglesia. Uno por uno, prometieron vivir la pobreza, la castidad y la obediencia de acuerdo con la Regla de San Agustín y www.midwestaugustinians.org

las Constituciones de la Orden. Se quitaron sus hábitos blancos de novicio y se pusieron sus hábitos negros, y fueron recibidos con el abrazo de paz de sus hermanos agustinos.

El P. Farrell recordó a la congregación que esos votos no son limitaciones ni obligaciones, sino una forma de vivir las promesas hechas por primera vez en el Bautismo, lo que permite a los religiosos amar a Dios, a sus hermanos y a la Iglesia con un corazón sin divisiones.

Antes de que continuara la liturgia, invitó a todos los presentes a recordar que una vocación nunca se vive en soledad.

«Mientras nuestros hermanos profesan sus votos esta mañana», dijo, «los invito a todos a orar por ellos».

Para los agustinos del Medio Oeste, el día fue a la vez alegre y lleno de esperanza. Tres de los cuatro novicios pertenecen a la Provincia del Medio Oeste, y cada profesión de votos renueva la vida de la Orden, aportando nuevas voces, nuevos dones y nueva energía a una comunidad que ha servido a la Iglesia durante generaciones. También es un recordatorio de que Dios sigue llamando a hombres de todos los orígenes a seguir a Cristo a través del estilo de vida agustino.
