The Midwest Augustinian Provincial Council confirms the appointment of Fr. Philip Cook, O.S.A. as the next Headmaster of Cascia Hall, to replace Mr. Roger Carter who announced he would be stepping down from the position after 8 years of dedicated service.

Fr. Bernard C. Scianna, O.S.A. closes his eight-year tenure as Prior Provincial as Very Reverend. Anthony Pizzo, O.S.A. is installed to a four-year term during a ceremony at St. Rita Shrine Chapel in Chicago. Fr. Pizzo was elected to the position by the Midwest Augustinian delegates at the opening of the Provincial Chapter.
On the Augustinian Feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Fr. Joseph McCormick, O.S.A. was installed as Pastor at St. Bernard Parish of Homer Glen, IL. Also on this date, the Midwest friars gathered to bless a new memorial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip, IL. The memorial listed the names of all the deceased Midwest Augustinians who were buried at locations outside the Augustinian burial plot. Prior Provincial Fr. Bernard Scianna, O.S.A. launches the Year of Vocations campaign with a goal of $1.5 million in gifts, pledges, and bequests to support the formation of new Augustinian Vocations.

The sixth annual Augustinian Gala honors Fr. John Merkelis, O.S.A., Br. Jerome Sysko, O.S.A., and Augustinian Affiliates Tony and Phyllis Lauinger. Proceeds from the evening were enough to cover the annual expenses of three of the Province’s men in formation.
Care for Retired & Infirm Friars In accordance with our Province’s “Covenant of Care” program, Augustinian friars remain in a religious community for as long as possible. Those in need of more care move to the Blessed Stephen Bellesini Friary in Crown Point, Indiana, where they can both remain in a community of Augustinian friars within the facilities of Saint Anthony Village. Saint Anthony is a Catholic retirement community sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago. St. Anthony Village offers our friars independent and assisted living, skilled nursing care, and memory support. The Midwest Province currently includes 32 friars in retirement. Among our retired friars, 14 of them are members of the Blessed Stephen Bellesini Friary at Saint Anthony Village in Crown Point, Indiana. Due to varying circumstances, two friars receive care at Montereau in Tulsa. All others remain members of our “active” communities in our schools and parishes. Blessed Stephen Bellesini Friary is also a temporary home for friars in need of physical rehabilitation before they can return to one of the active Augustinian houses. For example, Fr. Jim Thompson, O.S.A. was able to complete his rehabilitation after suffering an accident that fractured his hip and ankle.
Following my hip operation I went to Crown Point and entered into to skilled care. The care was just marvelous. Both on the part of the nurses and the certified nurses assistants. I was there three months, working with the physical and occupational therapists, and then of course the nurses, doing whatever physical therapy that I needed, but the primary focus was on the legs and getting me back on my feet. I quickly exceeded expectations and so, I went from skilled care to assisted living and finally home healthcare, where I lived in a space that was my own apartment, and I had visiting occupational therapists, a nurse, and physical therapist. They were demanding, and yet consoling or comforting. In other words, they kind of figured you can do this. And so, they would push, but not extreme. It was just really good. We worked very well together.

Men in Formation
There are currently 31 men in Augustinian formation across the United States and Canada. Under the leadership of Vocations Director Fr. Richie Mercado, O.S.A., The Midwest Province has 11 men in various stages of formation. Spencer Thomas, an alumnus of Cascia Hall, and Fr. Ray Flores, a diocesan priest from New Mexico, both completed the yearlong Augustinian Novitiate in Racine, WI and confirmed their intentions to make first vows to the Order. Brother Jack Tierney, O.S.A. spent his Pastoral Year— traditionally the third year after initial vows—serving with the Augustinian NGO at the United Nations. Currently he is preparing to make his solemn profession of vows in December 2018. Newly ordained Fr. Stephen Isley, O.S.A. entered active ministry in his first assignment to teach at Cascia Hall Preparatory School.
Online outreach efforts continue to bring increased greater traffic to our home website. During the fiscal year 2017-18 the site received 10,000 more visitors than it had during the previous fiscal year.
I joined the Augustinians because I am inspired by the many individuals in this order who authentically give of themselves day in and day out, in order to bring the love and mercy of Jesus to the Church, and to the world. Responding to God's call in my life, I too, hope to be such an agent of God's mercy.
I was drawn to the Augustinians by the example of St. Augustine's own life. I was also impressed by the long heritage and history of the Augustinian Order. Finally, I was drawn by the variety of apostolates the Augustinians are involved in, especially education.

Missions in Peru In January 2018, Fr. Bernie Scianna, O.S.A. made his final visit as Prior Provincial to the Chulucanas Vicariate in Peru. On January 13, the novitiate year closed for 13 men from various circumscriptions around South America who professed their initial vows to the Augustinian Order. The mass, presided by Fr. Patricio Villalba, O.S.A., Assistant General, was held at the Augustinian Novitiate House in Lima, Peru, which accepts novices from many South American countries. The next novitiate class began in February with 8 more novices. The Assembly celebrated the 75th birthday of Bp. Daniel Turley, O.S.A., Bp. Robert Prevost, O.S.A. of the Diocese of Chiclayo, and Archbishop Miguel Cabrejos of the Archdiocese of Trujillo were present. Father Bernie's final visit to our missions as Provincial also coincided with the first pastoral visit of Pope Francis. On January 18, Francis visited the city of Trujillo where the Augustinian pre-novices and seminarians reside. While there, he said Mass on the arid coastline, concelebrating with Bp. Prevost.
Bishop Turley submitted his resignation to Pope Francis, as is required by Canon Law when reaching the age of 75. However he will continue to serve as bishop of Chiclayo until a successor is named. Pope Francis named Edinson Farfån Cordova, O.S.A. of the Chulucanas Vicariate to the position of Apostolic Administrator of the territorial Prelature, following the resignation of Italian Prelate Domenico Berni Leonardi, O.S.A. Currently the most imperative long-term project being undertaken in our Vicariate is the construction of a permanent campus for Colegio San Agustin, a K-12 school in Trujillo, the country’s thirdlargest city. Initial construction has begun on a new campus at a separate location, across from the Catholic University of Trujillo, that will be able to accommodate the increased student enrollment. Due to the large itinerant population in Peru, any construction project needs to be preceded by the construction of a barrier wall, to deter the establishment of pop-up communities of individuals seeking work. This wall was completed in 2017, but added a large front-end expense. VISIT US ONLINE!

Augustinian Education
The Midwest Augustinians currently sponsor two Augustinian schools—St. Rita of Cascia High School in Chicago and Cascia Hall Preparatory School in Tulsa—and administer one school of the Diocese of Joliet—Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, IL. Two other independent Catholic schools are members of the Augustinian Secondary Education Association, though they are not officially sponsored by the Augustinian Order: Saint Thomas of Villanova College in King City, Ontario; and Austin Catholic High School in Chesterfield, Michigan. Father John Merkelis, O.S.A., President of Providence Catholic High School, unveiled the new Mission Statement for the school. The revised Statement will help guide the school's administration while making strategic decisions and it will be used to gauge success of the school's long range goals and strategies. "One of the greatest strengths of any school community is its people; and specifically, their voices that can speak to a school's past, present, and future," said Merkelis. "I am proud of the end result of that hard work: It is a profound and beautiful articulation of our mission."

Roger Carter announced that after eight years of service, he would be stepping down from the position of headmaster at Cascia Hall at the close of the 2017-18 academic year. Former Prior Provincial Bernie Scianna, O.S.A. appointed Fr. Philip Cook, O.S.A. as his successor. Fr. Philip has served at Cascia off and on for the past 25 years. He first came to Cascia as Bro. Philip in 1993 and taught Theology and Latin in the middle school. He earned a reputation as a wonderful teacher. After two years at Cascia, he returned to Chicago to complete his studies, and once he was ordained to the priesthood in 1997, he was reassigned to Cascia Hall. Saint Rita High School in Chicago successfully completed their capital campaign to begin construction on a new 6,000-square-foot fitness center. The Mrozek Family Fitness Center is named in honor of Ernie Mrozek, a 1971 St. Rita graduate who also served as the school's president for five years.
Parish Ministry Apart from the parishes served in Canada and Peru, the Midwest Augustinians now direct seven parishes: Saint Rita of Cascia Parish in Chicago, IL; Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish in Homer Glen, IL; Saint Jude Parish in New Lenox, IL; Saint Turibius Parish in Chicago; Saint Bernard Parish in Homer Glen, IL; Saint Rita of Cascia Parish in Racine, WI; and Saint Gabriel Parish in Chicago, IL. Following the appointment of Fr. Joseph McCormick, O.S.A. to the position of Pastor at St. Bernard Parish in Homer Glen, the Diocese of Joliet agreed to help finance the construction of a new friary to house the present and future Augustinians serving at both Our Mother of Good Counsel and St. Bernard. The new friary will be located on the property of Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish with accommodations for six men. Saint Rita of Cascia Parish was selected by the Archdiocese of Chicago to receive the 2018 Saint Toribio Romo Award. Saint Rita Parish was chosen out of all parishes of the Archdiocese in recognition of its Pastoral Migratoria program, which ministers to and empowers the Hispanic immigrant population of its surrounding community by addressing "urgent, basic human and pastoral needs in the absence of immigration policy restructure."
In an award letter sent from the Office of Human Dignity and Solidarity, St. Rita of Cascia was recognized for "their active leadership team that continuously takes initiative responding to the immigrant community's needs. This includes organizing citizenship classes and individual consultations with immigration attorneys, working collaboratively with civic, professional, and governmental organizations, accompanying families in the community, and supporting other Pastoral Migratoria parishes." The election of Fr. Tony Pizzo, O.S.A. to the position of Prior Provincial meant that he would also need to exit his position as Pastor at St. Rita Parish. He presided over his final Mass as Pastor of the parish on June 17, at which point Fr. Homero Sanchez, O.S.A. took over direction as Administrator. Parishioners at St. Jude Parish have cultivated a vibrant Peace and Social Justice Ministry directed at the promotion of fair-trade markets and letterwriting campaigns to our nation's policy-makers. In June 2018, Peace and Social Justice Ministry Lorrie Tracy travelled to Washington D.C. to deliver letters written by the parishioners and St. Jude School students for the Bread for the World campaign, urging legislators to "end hunger at home and abroad." Advancement
STEWARDSHIP UPDATE
The Provincial Office of Advancement launched the Year of Vocations Campaign with a target goal of $1.5 million to support the formation of new vocations to the Order. A companion website for the campaign was launched at AugustinianVocations.org. The Fiscal Year 2017-18 was the largest yet for the Advancement Office in terms of total net revenue, reaching $1,067,757, which covered over a third of the Province's expenses.
We held our Sixth Annual Augustinian Gala at the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago, chaired by then Prior Provincial Bernie Scianna, O.S.A. The net revenue of this event was enough to cover the annual expenses for three Augustinian men in formation. The Province sent out its first direct mailing for bequests and planned giving. We, the Augustinians of the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel, are members of the worldwide Order of St. Augustine in the Roman Catholic Church. Centered in the Eucharist and prayer, we search for God in community by sharing our lives, goods and spiritual journey with each other and the people of God. In harmony of mind and heart on our journey toward God, our experience of common life flows into and shapes our ministries. We continue to serve the Church in schools, parishes and missions as we seek to discern new paths of service to which God calls us.
