Very Rev. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A.
It is with immense joy and anticipation that I extend to you a warm welcome to the 2024 Augustinian Gala at the historic Drake Hotel. This evening promises to be a celebration of our shared Catholic Augustinian values, accomplishments, and the profound impact of our wider Augustinian family.
As we gather together in this elegant setting, we do so not only to enjoy a meal and share in friendship and fellowship, but also to honor the outstanding individuals among us whose dedication, service, and commitment embody the very essence of our Augustinian spirit.
Tonight, we pay tribute to Rev. William Lego, O.S.A., for his years of service to the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel as a missionary, pastor, treasurer, Prior Provincial, and a friend to many in the community, especially at St. Turibius Parish, where he has served as Pastor for over a decade.
We also honor Greg and Wendy Jania, longtime members of the Augustinian community and friends of the Augustinian Order who have supported us over the years at our schools and at our Province. We celebrate how the entire Jania family have eagerly joined us on our restless Augustinian journey in faith.
Finally, we honor the life and lasting impact of Rev. Walter McNicholas, O.S.A., on our Augustinian Community. Father McNicholas's enthusiasm for the Augustinian way of life was contagious, and he encouraged many students to consider joining the Augustinian Order. He was known for his quiet, steadfast faith and dedication to both the religious and educational aspects of his calling.
As we come together in fellowship and celebration, let us reflect on the profound legacy of Saint Augustine and the timeless wisdom of his teachings. Let us draw strength from the bonds of friendship and fraternity that unite us as members of the Augustinian family, and let us rededicate ourselves to the noble pursuit of truth, unity, and love.
Yours in Saint Augustine,
Very Rev. Anthony Benedetto Pizzo, O.S.A.
Prior Provincial
Our Mother of Good Counse, Pray for Us!
V. Rev. Anthony Benedetto Pizzo, O.S.A.

The 2024 Augustinian Gala will honor Rev. William Lego, O.S.A., for his years of service to the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel as a missionary, pastor, treasurer, Prior Provincial, and a friend to many in the community, especially at St. Turibius Parish, where he has served as Pastor for over a decade.
Fr. Bill was born in Chicago on March 13, 1955, to Edward and Eugenia Lego, and was baptized at St. Hedwig Church and later confirmed at St. James Church in Chicago. After graduating from St. James Catholic School, Fr. Bill entered St. Augustine High School Seminary in Holland, Michigan, and graduated in 1973.
He joined the Augustinian formation program at Villanova University in PA where he earned a B.A. in sociology in 1977. In the same year, he entered the Augustinian Novitiate and professed temporary vows in the Order of St. Augustine in 1978 and solemn
(permanent) vows in 1981.
He earned an M.Div. in 1982 from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. After ordination as a deacon in 1982, he went to the Augustinian Missions in Santo Domingo, Peru, to serve his deacon internship. On April 30, 1983, at the age of 28, Fr. Bill was ordained a Priest in Chicago.
Shortly after ordination, Fr. Bill returned to Peru where he ministered for the next 10 years. For two of those years, he was Vicar for Finances for the Diocese of Chulucanas and afterwards worked in formation studies and parish ministry.
In 1993, Fr. Bill returned to the United States and for a short time was Associate Pastor at both St. Rita and St. Clare of Montefalco parishes. In 1995, he was named Pastor of St. Rita Parish in Chicago until 2003 when he was elected Treasurer of the Augustinian Province and a member of the Province Council – two positions he held until his election
as Provincial in 2006.
After completing his term of office as Prior Provincial, Fr. Bill served as Administrator of St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish, Chicago. He was appointed Associate Pastor of St. Turibius Parish, Chicago, in January, 2011 and became Pastor of St. Turibius in July, 2011. Fr. Bill continues to serve the community of St. Turibius parish, in addition to serving on the Provincial Council. He was made Personnel Director of the Province in Dec 2020, and Vicar for Parishes in Aug 2022.
Fr. Bill exemplifies the Augustinian charism of “community” in his work now, as he has through the entirety of his journey as an Augustinian friar, priest, and leader. We are overjoyed to be able to honor him in this public way at the 2024 Augustinian Gala.
Thank you, Fr. Bill.
The 2024 Augustinian Gala will honor Greg and Wendy Jania, longtime members of the Augustinian community and friends of the Augustinian Order.
The Jania’s family history with the Order began decades ago, when Greg’s father, Jim, attended St. Rita of Cascia High School from 1960-64. Years later, Jim would return to the school as a teacher, and his sons –including Greg – as students.
“I felt that some of what made my father a great man must have been from his experience at St. Rita and with the Augustinians, so St. Rita became an easy decision for me,” Greg remembers of his choice to attend St. Rita for school. “He probably didn’t realize it at the time, but he knew from working with the Augustinians that to truly love something, you need to choose it for yourself.”
During high school, Greg formed
a close relationship with fellow 2024 Augustinian Gala Honoree Fr. Walter “Wally” McNicholas throughout his involvement as Class Valedictorian, newspaper Editor, and President of the National Honor Society. After graduating in 1989 and while attending Wabash College, Fr. McNicholas gave Greg an Augustinian prayer book that helped fuel his faith and family life in the next decades.
Fr. McNicholas would go on to marry Greg and Wendy, and remained close to their family as they raised two children, Alec and Olivia, who both attended Villanova University and continued on the Jania family legacy of Augustinian education.
Over the past 30+ years, the Janias have been involved with the Augustinian community in a variety of ways, as members of the St. Rita High School Board of Directors (they were honored as the Couple of the
Year in 2016 and Greg individually was honored as Man of the Year in 2019), on the Midwest Augustinian Advancement Council, and at events.
We, the Midwest Augustinian Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel are pleased to celebrate the Janias’ legacy of support and service to the Augustinian community as 2024 Augustinian Gala Honorees.
Thank you, Greg and Wendy.
The 2024 Augustinian Gala will honor and pay tribute to the life and lasting impact of Rev. Walter McNicholas, O.S.A., an Augustinian renowned for his service to the Order and community. With nearly half a century dedicated to education and pastoral care, Father McNicholas, known as "Father McNic" by generations of students, left an enduring mark on the community.
Born in Chicago in 1926, Fr. McNicholas joined the Augustinian formation program in 1946, later being ordained in 1952. Throughout his 58-year ministry, he served at various schools and parishes across the Midwest, cementing his legacy as an Augustinian “Legend” to generations of students and members of the communities he served.
A St. Rita graduate himself, Fr. McNicholas served at the school in the 1950s and 1960s, and then the 80’s and at the turn of the century, taking on various roles such as chaplain, teacher, guidance counselor, vocations director, and alumni association chaplain. Well-liked by his
students, he knew each student by name, and cared about their well-being. He was frequently sought out for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to provide life advice. Whenever there was a death in the family of any St. Rita student, Fr. McNicholas would attend the wake.
His impact extended to day-to-day needs, and he famously purchased secondhand items at the local St. Vincent DePaul resale shop for unequipped students.
He brought his enthusiasm for care to his parish when he was assigned to be pastor of Immaculate Conception / St. Henry Parish in St. Louis in 1972, and again to his students at Austin Catholic High School in Detroit later that same year.
Fr. McNicholas returned to parish ministry in 1978, serving for a year at Saint Mary's Parish in Independence, MO, before moving to St. Clare of Montefalco Parish in Grosse Pointe Park, MI.
He returned for his third stint at St. Rita in 1983, remaining there for 10 years. He served for one year as a chaplain at
Holy Cross Hospital on the Southwest Side before returning to St. Rita as a guidance counselor until his retirement in 2009.
In 2010, Fr. McNicholas was assigned to the newly established Blessed Stephen Bellesini Friary at the Franciscan Village in Lemont. He passed away in 2011 after a brief battle with cancer.
Father McNicholas's enthusiasm for the Augustinian way of life was contagious, and he encouraged many students to consider joining the Augustinian Order. He was known for his quiet, steadfast faith and dedication to both the religious and educational aspects of his calling.
Fr. McNicholas was close with the Jania family, and married fellow honorees Greg and Wendy Jania
It is our great pleasure to celebrate his legacy as one of the 2024 Augustinian Gala Honorees.
Thank you, Fr. McNicholas.
We, the Augustinians of the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel, are members of the worldwide Order of St. Augustine in the Roman Catholic Church. Centered in the Eucharist and prayer, we search for God in community by sharing our lives, goods and spiritual journey with each other and the people of God. In harmony of mind and heart on our journey toward God, our experience of common life flows into and shapes our ministries. We continue to serve the Church in schools, parishes and missions as we seek to discern new paths of service to which God calls us.
Catharine and Edward Hennessy Rev. Fred Taggart, O.S.A. † Rev. John Gaffney, O.S.A. † Augustinian Sisters and Contemplative Nuns Matt† and Peggy Coughlin Rev. John Sotak, O.S.A.It is only right and just that we care for those who give all their lives in service to the Church. This includes those currently retired and infirm, those currently serving in active ministry, and those who have joined the Augustinians in recent years. The Midwest Province established the “Covenant Care” program in 2010, which states that Augustinians should live in religious community for as long as physical health permits.
For over 50 years, the Augustinians have been serving the impoverished regions of northern Peru. This service takes place in schools, parishes, and in basic human support activities across a rugged mountainous area covering well over 14,000 square miles. Thanks to the dedication of the Augustinians, there are now over thirty solemnly professed Augustinians in Northern Peru.
Our Vocations are the future of our religious order. These young men in formation and discernment will be the next leaders of the Church. We are blessed to have seen a steadily growing amount of young men interested in joining our community the past few years. Placing greater emphasis on vocations outreach will allow these efforts to blossom.
