Blessed Stephen Bellesini Community Covenant of Care Congratulations Fr. Fred!

A community of Friars serving Friars with the love, care and compassion these dedicated elders of the Province deserve and have earned. The selfless giving of all the Friars serving in this ministry embodies the true Augustinian spirit of care. These men were there for us when we needed them, now it is our turn to be there for them. Visit, call, send cards, plan events for them, pray for them, and of course donate what you can. The key is to reach out to them and let them know they are not forgotten. Welcome from the Prior Provincial Dear Friends of the Augustinians, We are truly touched that you have come out to celebrate the ministry of the Augustinians and the extraordinary service of our honorees this evening. It is good that we are here! It has been three years since we have gathered in the Drake ballroom, and I look forward to seeing many familiar faces. And what a three years it has been! In March of 2020, we had already mailed the invitations for what was going to be our ninth annual gala. We were securing generous sponsorships and taking reservations from our friends and family when Covid shifted the ground beneath us and the state went into lockdown. When we cancelled the gala over a month ahead of its scheduled date, some wondered if we were making too drastic of a decision (would Covid still be such a factor a month from now, we wondered). We all know what followed. A year later, large in-person gatherings were still out of the question. Therefore, we went digital, presenting our first ever Virtual Augustinian Gala in April 2021—emceed by Catharine Hennessy, Don Berschback, Fr. Jack Tierney, O.S.A., and Fr. Sam Joutras, O.S.A. I admit that I first met the idea of a Virtual Gala with skepticism. I was truly humbled by God’s goodness and the generous love of our friends and families, as the event brought in over $250,000 in 270 total gifts. What a blessing for our ministry! One of the brave individuals to host that live broadcast is an honoree this evening—Catharine Hennessy! Some of you may also remember that Catharine and Ed Hennessy had also volunteered to lead the donation appeal from the dais at our last in-person gala in 2019. Such extraordinary willingness to step forward to support the Augustinian distinguishes Catharine and Ed as exceptionally deserving of tonight’s recognition. I encourage you to read more about their long history with our Order in their Honoree Profile in the pages that follow. Joining Catharine and Ed as an Honoree this evening is Fr. Fred Taggart, O.S.A., whose service as a teacher at Mendel Catholic High School, Austin Catholic, and St. Augustine Seminary have impacted the lives of hundreds. Around the room tonight you will also find those who knew Fr. Fred from his work as a pastor among our parishes in Michigan— St. Clare of Montefalco in Grosse Pointe, St. Peter’s in Douglas, and St. Matthew’s in Flint. One of those individuals impacted by the pastoral work of Fr. Fred is the recently ordained Fr. Jeff Raths, O.S.A., who was raised in St. Matthew’s parish, where he first encountered the Augustinians. Fr. Jeff was ordained with Fr. Joe Roccasalva, O.S.A. this past December at St. Jude parish in New Lenox. While Fr. Jeff and Fr. Joe are the faces of the future of our Province, they also remind us of our indebtedness to models of Augustinian life provided by our retired friars. For our posthumous honoree, we have chosen to celebrate the life and work of Fr. John Gaffney, O.S.A., who dedicated over 50 years to the Cascia Hall community. This evening gives us a valuable opportunity to remember all the brothers that we have lost. Like many families, we have lost loved ones over the past two years and were unable to properly grieve and honor them due to the pandemic. There are 10 faces of Augustinians before empty place settings at our first table this evening. Please take a moment to remember and pray for them. Thank you again for coming out in support of our ministries. It is inspiring for us to see you all together. Have a wonderful evening and a blessed Easter season. Sincerely in Christ and St. Augustine,

Very Rev. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A. Prior Provincial of the Midwest Augustinians

Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A.

Meet Our 2022 Gala Honorees interests, the more you have advanced. Thus, let love, which remains forever, prevail in all things that minister to the fleeting necessities of life.” Looking back over the 65 years of service Fr. Fred Taggart has given to the Order, one finds an example of selfless dedication to community that is truly worth celebrating. Few friars of our Province have traveled as widely and as frequently between assignments and communities. Many of our donors in Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, Racine, Tulsa, and elsewhere have been delighted to have this opportunity to celebrate a man whose service they have witnessed firsthand.

Fr. Fred Taggart, O.S.A. In Chapter Five of the Rule of St. Augustine, our spiritual Father writes, “The more you devote yourselves to the community rather than to your private

midwest augustinians

Fr. Fred’s vocation was first cultivated by the Augustinian friars at St. Matthew Parish in Detroit, where he attended elementary school and received his confirmation. He continued on for two years at our Province’s former Austin Catholic High School before transferring to St. Augustine Seminary in Holland, MI, where he graduated in 1956. He professed simple vows to the Order a year later, at the age of 19, and solemn, lifelong vows in 1960. He began

collegiate studies in 1957 at Immaculate Conception Seminary in northwest Missouri. After one year there, the Augustinian formation program relocated to the newly opened Tolentine College in Olympia Fields, IL. There he completed his undergraduate studies, earning his B.A. in Philosophy in 1961. He continued with graduate theological studies at Tolentine and Augustinian Academy in St. Louis and was ordained a priest of the Augustinian Order in 1965. Following his ordination, Fr. Fred took his first assignment as a math teacher at Chicago’s Mendel Catholic High School. After four years there, he was transferred to teach at his own alma mater, Austin Catholic in Detroit. He moved in 1976 to St. Augustine Seminary, where he continued teaching and became a member of the Province’s Formation Team. When the Augustinian minor seminary program relocated in 1977 to St. Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee, Fr. Fred moved along with it. The next year he was assigned to be Prior of the community at St. John Stone Friary in Chicago, teaching parttime at Mendel Catholic. After earning

Fr. John Gaffney, O.S.A. “I spent most of my career at Cascia Hall, all together over 50 years. About 33 of those years were in teaching, and then the ones that were not in teaching were in some contact from time to time with some of the students that were going to Cascia Hall after I had retired.” — Father John Gaffney, O.S.A. For this year’s Gala we have chosen to honor posthumously a friar whose decades of teaching have shaped the minds and souls of young men and women at St. Rita High School and Cascia Hall Prep. Fr. John Gaffney, O.S.A. was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in the year 1919. After graduating from St. Leo High School in Ashley, Pennsylvania, in the year 1937, he worked for a short time as a grocery clerk and eventually found his way to entering the Augustinian formation program.

his Certificate in Formative Studies and M. A. in Formative Spirituality in 1983, Fr. Fred was assigned to St. Nicholas of Tolentine Monastery, in Olympia Fields, to direct the Province Renewal Team and serve as Adult Vocations Director. He returned to his home state in 1987 when he was assigned to the position of Pastor at St. Peter Parish in Douglas, MI. He became Pastor of St. Clare of Montefalco Parish, Grosse Pointe Park, MI, in 1989. In 1995 he was appointed Pastor of St. Matthew Church, Flint, Michigan. While remaining Pastor of St. Matthew, Fr. Fred took on the appointment of canonical Pastor of St. Michael Parish in Flint, where he remained until his semi-retirement in 2015. He continued to serve his Province following retirement as he once again joined the Formation team as part of the Novitiate community, then located at St. Rita Parish in Racine, WI. Following the transfer of the Novitiate to Villanova, Fr. Fred moved to Bl. Stephen Bellesini Friary, Crown Point, IN.

John became an Augustinian Novice in 1938 and professed his first religious vows in the Augustinian Order one year later; he solemnly professed his perpetual vows on September 10, 1942. He proceeded to earn a B.A. in Philosophy from present-day Villanova University in 1942; further theological studies at Augustinian College in Washington, D.C.; and a M.A. in English Literature from Catholic University of America in 1946. Amidst these studies, he was also ordained a priest in the year 1945. Fr. John was assigned in 1946 to St. Rita High School in Chicago as a teacher for eight years. He also served as the Director of Novices for two years from 1962 to 1964. However, he devoted the majority of his active ministry to Tulsa’s Cascia Hall community. Fr. John served at Cascia Hall from both 1954 to 1962 and from 1964 to his retirement in 1989. That means an incredible total of 33 years of service to the Cascia Hall Community! Many of those in the Cascia Hall Community - our students, parents, teachers, and faculty - can tell profound stories of how Fr. John has impacted their lives. Some of the other students that Father Gaffney has taught went on to become upstanding leaders in society. More importantly, he has brought hundreds (if not thousands) of them closer to knowing God. His impact on the campuses of St. Rita and Cascia were not simply felt from the classroom, but also from his fervent reverence for the Mass. Fr. John often shared with his brothers his favorite quotation, which was posted in a Carmelite convent where he once served: “Celebrate this Mass as if it were your only Mass, your first Mass, and your last Mass.” Fr. John has lived out this commandment for years, and he shared this spirituality with scores of students that have attended Cascia Hall over the years. He retired from teaching in 2012, but remained a fixture in the Tulsa community. After being transferred to the Montereau Retirement Community, Fr. John passed away in 2019. We look forward to hearing from the many individuals whose souls have been formed by the words and example of this incredible man.

engaged, they brought the good news to Bishop McNabb even before their own family!

Ed & Catharine Hennessy The Hennessys share a family history with the Augustinians of over 100 years, dating back to 1920 when Ed Hennessy’s grandfather, Bernard Hennessy immigrated to America from Kildare County Ireland. Upon Bernard’s arrival on the east coast, he first found work and residence with the Augustinians on the Villanova College farm. The assistance from these friars eventually allowed him to move to Chicago where he began a family and raised 10 children. Leo Hennessy, Ed’s father, became a teacher and coach at Mendel Catholic, where he formed a close bond with Fr. John McNabb, O.S.A. (later to become Bishop McNabb, of Chulucanas). Ed remembers from a young age how his parents, Leo and Helen, hosted Bishop McNabb in their home, as he became a friend and spiritual mentor to the family. In fact, when Leo and Helen got

When Bishop McNabb was assigned to serve in the Midwest Province’s missions in Chulucanas, Peru, Leo and Helen organized a group of supporters. Over a period of 40 years, , Leo, Helen, and their friends threw “Chulucanas Mission Club” fundraisers to support Bishop John McNabb. Ed and his brothers and sisters were on hand at every fundraiser and assisted in all jobs. Eventually, Ed and his brothers and sisters began to throw a second party every year that they called the Bishop’s Bash fundraiser, consisting of the children of those who began the Chulucanas Mission Club. Ed Hennessy, one of seven children of Leo and Helen, is a graduate of Quigley South High School and Northern Illinois University. Following college, he studied at Cooley Law School in Michigan, graduating with his J.D. in 1993. He then began to practice law with his brother Tom and his law partner, Jim Roach at Hennessy & Roach Law Firm, where he became partner in 1999. In 1994, Ed met his wife Catharine Mullen who was Bill and Marie Mullen’s second of seven children. Catharine was born and spent the majority of her grade school years in the Philadelphia area. Catharine’s aunt and uncle are both graduates of Villanova University. Her mother’s first cousin, Fr. Frank Anastasi, was a priest and teacher at Villanova until he left to care for his elderly

mother. Catharine first came to Illinois when her father received a job transfer to Chicago in 1982. When Catharine met Ed, she was a graduate of Illinois State University and Chicago Kent Law School who was practicing law as a Labor and Employment attorney for the City of Chicago. She served as Assistant Commissioner with the City of Chicago’s Department of Streets and Sanitation from 2008 to 2021. Catharine became involved with the Chulucanas Mission Club when she and Ed were first dating. In 1995, Bishop McNabb celebrated the wedding mass for Ed and Catharine Hennessy, just as he had with Ed’s parents 39 years before. After they were married, Ed and Catharine remained committed and involved in the planning and running of the Chulucanas Mission Club Fundraiser. Catharine organized and ran the silent auction for the fundraiser for five of the last years it was held. In recognition of their generous support of the Midwest Augustinians, Ed and Catharine were invited to join the Province’s Advancement Council in 2016. They helped the Advancement office through two successful capital campaigns and were chairs of the 2016 Augustinian Gala Committee. Our regular Gala attendees will remember the outstanding work they did leading the fundraising appeal at our last in-person Gala in 2019! As we adapted to the pandemic and went virtual through 2021, it was again Catharine who volunteered to emcee our first Virtual Gala in April and our first Virtual Christmas party in December. On the Feast of St. Augustine, 2021, Prior Provincial Fr. Tony Pizzo, O.S.A. welcomed in the couple as Affiliates of the Augustinian Order.

Mission Statement We, the Augustinians of the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel, are members of the worldwide Order of St. Augustine in the Roman Catholic Church. Centered in the Eucharist and prayer, we search for God in community by sharing our lives, goods and spiritual journey with each other and the people of God. In harmony of mind and heart on our journey toward God, our experience of common life flows into and shapes our ministries. We continue to serve the Church in schools, parishes and missions as we seek to discern new paths of service to which God calls us.

Gala Proceeds Support…

Care for Elder & Infirm Friars New Vocations Our Vocations are the future of our religious order. These young men in formation and discernment will be the next leaders of the Church. We are blessed to have seen a steadily growing amount of young men interested in joining our community the past few years. Placing greater emphasis on vocations outreach will allow these efforts to blossom.

It is only right and just that we care for those who give all their lives in service to the Church. This includes those currently retired and infirm, those currently serving in active ministry, and those who have joined the Augustinians in recent years. The Midwest Province established the “Covenant Care” program in 2010, which states that Augustinians should live in religious community for as long as physical health permits.

Missions in Peru For over 50 years, the Augustinians have been serving the impoverished regions of northern Peru. This service takes place in schools, parishes, and in basic human support activities across a rugged mountainous area covering well over 14,000 square miles. Thanks to the dedication of the Augustinians, there are now over thirty solemnly professed Augustinians in Northern Peru.
