The Election Commission on Monday recognised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as a national party and withdrew the national party status of the All India Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI). In an order issued on Monday, the Commission also revoked the state party status granted to RLD in Uttar Pradesh, BRS in Andhra Pradesh, PDA in Manipur, PMK in Puducherry, RSP in West Bengal and MPC in Mizoram. The Commission said the AAP has been named as a national party based on its electoral performance in four states — Delhi, Goa, Punjab and Gujarat. The Arvind Kejriwal-led party is in power in Delhi and Punjab. The poll panel said that the status of NCP, CPI and the Trinamool Congress as national political parties would be withdrawn.

Y MEDIA EXCLUSIVE: AAP HAS TOTALLY FAILED IN PUNJAB, MLA KHAIRA SAYS

In an exclusive interview with Y Media Group Editor and CEO Yudhvir Jaswal, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Congress MLA from Bholath constituency, discussed the current situation of Punjab. Khaira said, "AAP government has badly upset the people's sentiments on multiple issues like corruption, drugs, sand mining, and VIP culture. AAP has totally failed in Punjab as CM Bhagwant Mann is being played as a pawn in the hands of the Indian government. Mann is victimizing the youth of Punjab, independent media and social media handlers."

In an exclusive interview with Y Media, MLA Khaira questioned the efficiency and competence of the AAP government in Punjab in handling the financial situation in the state. He remarked, "They have been here only for one year, and the financial situation is a total mess. Only one can imagine what fate awaits Punjab if they stay for the full term."

On Amritpal Singh's case, Sukhpal Singh Khaira told Y Media that he would never support draconian laws like UAPA or NSA since there is no evidence of terror activity. Hence, he has urged CM Bhagwant Mann not to charge Amritpal Singh under UAPA, NSA. He added, "If someone is doing an unlawful activity, they should be arrested and charged according to Indian Constitution, but not under these black laws."

INDIAN-AMERICAN C.R. RAO AWARDED INTERNATIONAL PRIZE IN STATISTICS

Noted Indian-American mathematician and statistician Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao has been awarded the 2023 International Prize in Statistics for his work more than 75 years back, which continues to exert a profound influence on science.

Rao, 102, will receive the prize, which comes with a $80,000 award, this July at the biennial International Statistical Institute World Statistics Congress in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

“In awarding this prize, we celebrate the monumental work by C.R. Rao that not only revolutionised statistical thinking in its time but also continues to exert enormous influence on human understanding of science across a wide spectrum of disciplines,” said Guy Nason, Chair of the International Prize in Statistics Foundation, in a statement. Rao demonstrated three fundamental results that paved the way for the modern field of statistics and provided statistical tools heavily used in science today in his 1945 paper published in the Bulletin of the Calcutta Mathematical Society.

Combined, these results help scientists more efficiently extract information from data.

Rao is currently a professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and Research Professor at the University at Buffalo. Born in 1920 in Karnataka, he was the eighth child born in a family of six brothers and four sisters.

He secured an MSc in Mathematics at Andhra University in 1941, an M.A. in statistics from Calcutta University in 1943 and a PhD degree at King’s College in Cambridge University in 1948. Cambridge University awarded him the prestigious Sc.D. degree in 1965, and he has received 31 Honorary Doctoral degrees from universities in 18 countries.

US PRESIDENT BIDEN PLANS TO RUN FOR A SECOND TERM, BUT NOT ANNOUNCING IT YET

US President Joe Biden has once agains teased a run for a second term but stopped short of announcing it.

“I plan on running,” Biden told an NBC news interview Monday, adding, “but we’re not prepared to announce it yet.” Biden has said before that he intends to seek a second term but he would announce it only after consulting his family.

First Lady Jill Biden told CNN in February, “I’m all for it, of course.” Though an official announcement has not been made yet, there are every indication that the US President will run for a second term, defying questions about his age, including by members of his own party. Biden is 80 and is already the oldest president in US history, at the age of 78.

If he wins, he will be 82 when he starts the second term in 2025. Former President Donald Trump, the leading Republican challenger to Biden as of now is 76 and will be 78, if he wins and secures a second term. He lost his reelection in in 2020 to Biden and is running a third time, dogged by mounting legal troubles. President Biden is currently at 42.6 per cent approval rating in FiveThirtyEight’s aggregate of polls, with 52.6 per cent disapproval rating. While the economy has recovered from the crippling effects of the Covid-19 epidemic and unemployment is low, inflations remains high and because of rising interest rates – raised by the Federal Reserve for curb prices – fears of recession are in the air, bolstered by the collapse of two regional banks in recent weeks.

34% OF CANADIANS ARE IN ‘BAD’ OR ‘TERRIBLE’ SHAPE FINANCIALLY, ANGUS REID SURVEY REVEALS

More than a year into a stubborn and persistent cost-of-living crisis, a considerable number of Canadians have progressed from belt-tightening on spending to drawing on existing savings to make ends meet. The latest data from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute finds two-thirds of Canadians reporting cutting back on discretionary spending in recent months – a number 14-points higher than reported around this time last year. However, for millions, penny-pinching doesn’t go far enough. Two-in-five (40%) say recent challenges have forced them to draw money from accounts that they try not to touch, and one-in-three (35%) say they deferred a contribution to their RRSP or TFSA.

For one-in-ten the situation has been so difficult they’re either borrowing from friends and family (13%), selling assets (11%), or seeking out a bank loan (8%).

Little wonder then, that fully one-in-three (34%) Canadians say they’re in either “bad” or “terrible” shape financially. This represents a six-point increase from last July. Those individuals continue to struggle with food costs, for which inflation remains significantly higher at approximately 10 per cent. Among those who say they are in “terrible shape” financially, nine-in-ten (94%) say it is difficult to feed their household. Four-in-five (80%) say this among the group who are in self-described “bad shape”. The federal government recently tabled a budget including policy measures, such as one-time grocery rebate, designed to alleviate the financial pressure that many are individuals and households are feeling. And while these moves may provide some relief to some households, persistent challenges remain, perhaps exacerbated for nearly half of Canadian workers (45%) who say they have not received additional compensation from their employer over the past 12 months.

INVITES ISSUED FOR KING CHARLES’

CORONATION ON MAY 6

Invites for the May 6 coronation of the UK’s King Charles III have been issued by the Buckingham Palace. Along with the ornately illustrated invitation from “King Charles III and Queen Camilla”, a new photograph of the royals which was taken last month in the Blue Drawing Room at the Buckingham Palace was also released on Tuesday. The invite, printed on recycled paper, shows the coronation will mark a change in how Camilla is titled — from Queen Consort to Queen. In a statement, the Palace said the invitation will be issued in due course to over 2,000 guests who will form the congregation in Westminster Abbey. At the coronation service, Camilla will be crowned alongside the King, 18 years after the couple married. The in vitation has been designed by Andrew Jamieson, a heraldic artist and manuscript illuminator whose work is inspired by the chivalric themes of Arthurian legend. The original artwork for the invitation was handpainted in watercolour and gouache, and the design will be reproduced and printed on recycled card, with gold foil detailing.

In India, under the direction of P.C. Mahalanobis, Rao worked to set up statistical bureaus in different states and developed a network of statistical agencies at the district level for collecting data. India honoured Rao with a Padma Bhushan in 1968 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001. It has also instituted a biennial national award in Statistics known as the ‘The Professor C.R. Rao’ award.

In his honour, the Pennsylvania State University has established a C.R. and Bhargavi Rao Prize in Statistics.

The first International Prize in Statistics was awarded in 2017 to David R. Cox for the development of the Cox proportional hazards model, which allows researchers to investigate patient survival rates in complex studies.

Awarded biennially at the ISI World Statistics Congress, the International Prize in Statistics aims to enhance public understanding of the depth and scope of statistics.

E-SCOOTER

PILOT PROGRAM LAUNCHES IN BRAMPTON

The City of Brampton, in partnership with Neuron Mobility, Bird Canada and Scooty Mobility, is launching Brampton’s first-ever E-scooter program. Up to 750 E-scooters will be available for public use across the City of Brampton. Users can approach a locked E-scooter, scan the QR code, download the app and follow the vendor’s instructions to unlock it and ride, connecting residents with another sustainable active transportation option. E-scooters can be used on roads with a speed limit of 50 km/h or less, bicycle lanes, and multi-use paths and will travel up to 20 km/h, with geo-fencing reducing maximum speed to 15 km/h in certain locations. They are not for use on sidewalks. If an E-scooter is taken into a designated no-riding zone, the vehicle shuts off smoothly and the user gets a notification that they should proceed to a permitted area.

The City of Brampton is prioritizing active transportation programs and plans in an effort to build more connected communities, creating a wholesome active transportation network integrated with complete streets.

In January 2021, the province began a five-year electric kick-scooter pilot project allowing municipalities to regulate the use of E-scooters. As an active transportation pillar, the E-scooter program will connect residents to communities, services and businesses throughout the downtown core and neighbourhoods across Brampton.

Active Transportation presents one of the greatest untapped opportunities for reducing single occupant vehicle trips, and for addressing a host of community design and public health issues. The E-scooter program is one way the City of Brampton is working to build a comprehensive Active Transportation Network.

The Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) provides the network plan, policies, and programs to support Brampton’s 2040 Vision for a mosaic of safe, integrated transportation choices and new modes, contributing to civic sustainability and emphasizing walking, cycling, and transit. The City will monitor citizen feedback through escooters@brampton.ca. For more information, visit www.brampton.ca/escooters.

PAKISTAN WARNS OF SERIOUS REPERCUSSIONS OF UK MINISTER BRAVERMAN’S REMARKS AGAINST PAKISTANI MEN

Condemning UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s “discriminatory and xenophobic” remarks against Pakistani men, the Pakistan Foreign Office (FO) has warned of the serious repercussions of such comments, media reports said.

The British minister has been accused of “peddling extremist far-right lies” about Pakistanis after she singled out British Pakistani men over concerns about grooming gangs as she accused authorities of turning a “blind eye” to signs of abuse involving young people, Geo News reported.

In a recent interview with Sky News, the UK minister said that the “systematic and institutional failure to safeguard the welfare of children when it comes to sexual abuse” was one of the biggest scandals in British history.

“What’s clear is that what we’ve seen is a practice whereby vulnerable white English girls, sometimes in care, sometimes who are in challenging circumstances, being pursued and raped and drugged and harmed by gangs of British-Pakistani men who’ve worked in child abuse rings or networks,” she had stated.

FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, in a press briefing, warned that such comments would give “rise to dangerous trends”.

US POLICE TO SEEK EXTRADITION OF INDIAN MAN, WIFE AFTER MINOR FEARED DEAD

Braverman had also been warned by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) that sexual predators do not just come from “one background” and that a focus solely on race could create new “blind spots” when tackling child abuse, Geo News reported. The NSPCC had criticised the UK Home Secretary and expressed its shock at her hatred towards Pakistanis and for singling out Pakistanis.

INDIA SHOULD BE PRAGMATIC IN ITS POLITICAL INTERACTIONS: UKRAINE MINISTER

Visiting Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister EmineDzhaparova on Monday said that India should be pragmatic while diversifying its political interactions and energy resources. The Minister's comments have come in the light of the fact that India has repeatedly abstained from voting against Russia at all international fora against Moscow's ongoing invasion of Kiev. Dzhaparova, who arrived on Sunday on a four-day visit to India, met Secretary-West Sanjay Verma at the External Affairs Ministry earlier on Monday. "India should be pragmatic in diversifying its energy resources, military contracts and political interactions. Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi's policy of democracy, dialogue and diversity and 'no era of war' and strategic application is really important," she told reporters after the meeting. It is the first official visit by a Ukraine Minister to India since Russia launched the full scale invasion on February 24, 2022. During the visit, Dzhaparova will also call on Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi and meet Deputy National Security Adviser Vikram Misri, official sources said

The FBI and other US federal agencies are working to extradite a couple who fled to India after arrest warrants were issued against them for abandoning/endangering a child, who is now feared dead, police said. Six year-old Noel Rodriguez-Alvarez, who has special needs, was last seen in late October or early November last year shortly after his twin sisters were born, Everman Police Chief CW Spencer said during a press conference. The police have active felony warrants for the arrest of the couple, which “is a second-degree felony”, he said. “We want these fugitives arrested and extradited to the US so that we can seek answers for the disappearance of Noel.” Noel was one of the 10 children born to Cindy Rodriguez-Singh. Three siblings lived with their grandparents, while Noel and the others lived with their mother in a shed in Everman, a suburb of Fort Worth. Spencer said that Indian-step father Arshdeep Singh, Cindy, and six other

VACCINES FOR CANCER, HEART DISEASE TO BE READY BY END OF DECADE

Millions of lives could be saved by a groundbreaking set of new vaccines for a range of conditions including cancer, experts have said. A leading pharmaceutical firm said it is confident that jabs for cancer, cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases, and other conditions will be ready by 2030, the Guardian reported. Studies into these vaccinations are also showing “tremendous promise”, with some researchers saying 15 years’ worth of progress has been “unspooled” in 12 to 18 months thanks to the success of the Covid jab. Paul Burton, the chief medical officer of pharmaceutical company Moderna, said he believes the firm will be able to offer such treatments for “all sorts of disease areas” in as little as five years. The firm, which created a leading coronavirus vaccine, is developing cancer vaccines that target different tumour types, the Guardian reported. Burton said: “We will have that vaccine and it will be highly effective, and it will save many hundreds of thousands, if not millions of lives. I think we will be able to offer personalised cancer vaccines against multiple different tumour types to people around the world.” He also said that multiple respiratory infections could be covered by a single injection — allowing vulnerable people to be protected against Covid, flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) — while mRNA therapies could be available for rare diseases for which there are currently no drugs, the Guardian reported. Therapies based on mRNA work by teaching cells how to make a protein that triggers the body’s immune response against disease.

PAKISTAN INCREASES POLICY RATE BY 100 BASIS POINTS TO 21%

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has increased the policy rate by 100 basis points to 21 per cent to contain inflation, the central bank said in a statement. The monetary policy committee (MPC) of the bank noted that inflation in March 2023 rose to 35.4 per cent, and is expected to remain high in the near term, the statement added on Tuesday. “The MPC views today’s decision as an important step towards anchoring inflation expectations around the medium-term target, which is critical for achieving the objective of price stability,” said the SBP. The committee further observed that Pakistan’s financial sector remains broadly resilient, while economic activity continues to moderate, it added. Earlier in March, the SBP increased the interest rate by 300 basis points to 20 per cent, and according to Tuesday’s statement, the current account deficit has narrowed considerably since then, Xinhua news agency reported.

Mid Week 7 MIDWEEK NEWS WEEKLY TUESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2012 NEWS WEEKLY TUESDAY, APRIL 11, 2023 SPECIAL REPORT

NATO'S EXPANSION

Finland formally became a member of NATO on April 4 during a scheduled summit, finalising the fastest accession process in the treaty's history.

Last week, the blue-and-white flag of Finland was raised alongside those of its western partners outside NATO's headquarters in Brussels after the Nordic country formally became the 31st member of the transatlantic defensive alliance.

Guests at the ceremony, including the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and the Finnish President, Foreign and Defence Ministers applauded and shouted "bravo" at the ceremony, which marked a historic realignment of Europe's security landscape.

US President Joe Biden warmly welcomed the completion of Finland's accelerated accession process, saying NATO had shown itself more united than ever after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The two Nordic countries, Finland and Sweden's inclusion in NATO was being watched as the war of nerves between the West, represented by the US and its allies and the Communist-Socialist bloc led by Russia. Though initially Russia showed less apprehension about the inclusion of these two Scandinavian countries in NATO, however, after Finland becoming the latest member to join the alliance, Kremlin's spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said that NATO's embrace of Finland was an "encroachment on our security and on Russia's national interests", adding that Moscow would watch closely for any NATO military deployments there.

The Ministry added that the development marked "a fundamental change in the situation in northern Europe, which had previously been one of the most stable regions in the world".

Russia said on Monday it would bolster its military capacity in its western and north-western regions in response to Finland's accession.

Sweden and Finland together share a 1,340 km-long border with Russia, and both submitted simultaneous membership applications last May, abandoning decades of military non-alignment to seek security as NATO members after the Russian invasion.

The Guardian has commented that joining NATO means Finland falls under the alliance's Article 5, a collective defence pledge that stipulates that an attack on one NATO member "shall be considered an attack against them all".

Finland is one of the few European countries to have retained a conscription army through decades of peace, wary of its eastern neighbour Russia after the former Soviet Union tried to invade the country during WW II.

Finland's ground, naval and air forces are all trained and equipped with one primary aim - to repel any Russian invasion.

Finland has what it calls "Western Europe's strongest artillery" that includes some 1,500 weapons: about 700 howitzers and cannon, 700 mortars and about 100 heavy and light rocket launchers. By joining the NATO now it can purchase more arms from diverse sources such as Israel.

TURKEY AND HUNGARY, PRESUMABLY AT THE BEHEST OF RUSSIA TRIED TO STALL THIS PROCESS FOR THE LAST ONE YEAR.

TURKISH PRESIDENT RECEP TAYYIPERDOGAN ACCUSES FINLAND AND SWEDEN OF HOUSING KURDISH "TERRORIST ORGANISATIONS", WHILE HUNGARIAN PRIME MINISTER VIKTOR ORBAN CLAIMED THEY WERE SPREADING "OUTRIGHT LIES" ABOUT HIS COUNTRY'S RULE OF LAW RECORD. HOWEVER, THERE WAS A LIMIT TO WHICH BOTH COULD STALL THE PROCESS AND WITH MANY BEHIND THE SCENES MANIPULATIONS AT LAST THEY BOWED DOWN TO THE NATO'S PRESSURE. TURKEY AND HUNGARY LATER SOFTENED THEIR STANCE ON FINLAND'S ACCESSION, OPENING THE DOOR TO ITS MEMBERSHIP EARLIER THIS MONTH. HOWEVER, THEY REMAIN OPPOSED TO SWEDEN JOINING -- AT LEAST FOR NOW. ANKARA ACCUSES STOCKHOLM OF SHELTERING KURDISH MILITANTS, WHILE BUDAPEST HAS "GRIEVANCES" ABOUT SWEDISH CRITICISM OF THE RULE OF LAW IN HUNGARY. FINLAND JOINING NATO MARKS ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT GEOPOLITICAL CONSEQUENCES OF RUSSIA'S INVASION OF UKRAINE TO DATE AND REPRESENTS A DRAMATIC REALIGNMENT OF EUROPE'S SECURITY FRAMEWORK. THE NORDIC COUNTRY MOVED TO JOIN NATO ALONGSIDE SWEDEN AS A DIRECT RESPONSE TO RUSSIA'S ASSAULT ON UKRAINE IN FEBRUARY 2022.

NATO has an open-door policy, meaning that any country can be invited to join if it expresses an interest, as long as it is able and willing to uphold the principles of the bloc's founding treaty. However, under the accession rules, any member state can veto a new country from joining.

Russia has repeatedly blamed NATO expansion, among other grievances, for what in reality was an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. Despite Russia's complaints, Ukraine was not on the formal path to join NATO at the time, and there wasn't a big push among the alliance's members to expand. But now, as a result of invading Ukraine, Russia has seen its land border with NATO double in size.

Last week, ministers formally convened in a NATO-Ukraine Commission format - a symbolic move acknowledging Kiev's aspirations for a closer relationship. Hungary, which has long blocked the body from meeting, grudgingly attended the session but vowed to continue opposing Ukrainian integration.

NATO pledged in 2008 that Ukraine would eventually join the alliance, but the process stalled. In the current situation, numerous Western capitals argue that the priority now is helping Ukraine win the war -- and that discussion of NATO's political relationship with Kiev should wait. But we cannot discount Ukraine too joining NATO sooner or later.

If and when that happens, that would strategically translate into Russia spreading thin its military resources, which have already taken a strong beating in the on-going Ukraine war. This may add to Russian President Vladimir Putin's headaches, but we also cannot discount its close ties with China and say that Russia has been pushed into a corner. In case of any direct confrontation with NATO, Russia can always be sure of support from China, and if it really happens that it may not augur well for the global peace. However, in the whole membership fracas, Russia seems to be the ultimate loser, as now it borders shared with NATO member or aspiring member countries have doubled in two different directions. Finland's inclusion in NATO indeed means a historic realignment of Europe's security landscape.

ONTARIO GOVT. RECOMMENDS COVID-19 BOOSTER SHOT FOR HIGH-RISK INDIVIDUALS THIS SPRING

Based on guidance from Health Canada and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health is recommending high-risk individuals receive their next COVID19 booster dose this spring.

"Staying up to date with vaccinations continues to be our best defense against COVID-19 and I'm strongly encouraging everyone, especially those with an increased risk of severe infection, to get all boosters available," said Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health. "We are grateful to all Ontarians for taking the time to get vaccinated and I'm encouraging everyone to keep helping reduce the spread of respiratory illness by staying home when they feel sick, washing their hands often and covering their mouths when they cough or sneeze."

Individuals in the following high-risk groups are recommended to book an appointment for a spring COVID-19 booster if it has been at least six months since their last dose or confirmed COVID-19 infection:

* Individuals aged 65 years and older;

* Residents of long-term care homes, retirement homes, Elder Care Lodges, and other congregate living settings for seniors;

* Individuals aged 18 years and older living in a congregate care setting for people with complex medical care needs;

* Pregnant individuals;

* Individuals aged 18 years and older who are moderately to severely immunoco mpromised; and

* Individuals aged 55 years and older who identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis and their non-Indigenous household members aged 55 years and older.

Individuals 5 years and older who have not yet received a booster dose since September 1, 2022, remain recommended to receive a booster dose if it has been at least six months since their last dose or confirmed COVID-19 infection. Recommendations for other individuals who are not high-risk and have already received a booster since September 1, 2022, will be available closer to Fall 2023.

Appointments can be booked via the COVID-19 vaccination portal or by calling the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre (PVCC) at 1-833-943-3900 (TTY for people who are deaf, hearing-impaired or speech-impaired: 1-866-797-0007).

The PVCC is capable of providing assistance in over 300 languages, and parents and caregivers can book for their children and dependents. Eligible individuals can also book an appointment directly through public health units that use their own booking systems, Indigenous-led vaccination clinics, participating health care providers and participating pharmacies.

CITY OF TORONTO PLANS FOR EARLY OPENING OF SEASONAL PARK WASHROOMS

City of Toronto is tracking weather forecasts, including the continued presence of ground frost, and actively finalizing plans for the early opening of seasonal park washrooms and water fountains this spring. This spring, the City will activate 128 seasonal park washrooms and more than 700 water fountains which will be available to the public into the fall. Through the winter months, 54 public year-round washrooms in parks as well as washrooms at 47 outdoor rinks are publicly open and available. Portable toilets (porta-potties) are also placed in 46 higher-use winter park locations.

The City budgets more than $180 million annually for all maintenance, staffing and operation of approximately 1,500 parks, including the opening and maintenance of seasonal park washrooms. In 2023, Toronto City Council approved an additional $2.8 million in new investment to ensure seasonal washrooms and drinking fountains in City parks open as soon as weather conditions permit in the spring and stay open later in the fall. Based on current available forecasts and conditions, staff expect to begin opening the first seasonal park washrooms by mid-April. This would

mark one of the earliest-ever openings of seasonal park washrooms.

Once the first washroom is open, staff expect it will take crews about three weeks to get all seasonal park washrooms, including any fountains and bottle filling stations that may be attached to those washrooms, open and ready for the public. It will take approximately six weeks from when the first washroom opens for crews to get all other water fountains and bottle filling stations open and tested for drinking.

In order to protect uninsulated seasonal washroom infrastructure (such as water pipes and drains) from damage that could result in costly longterm repairs, and facility closures, certain conditions must be met each spring before crews can get to work, including:

* daytime and evening temperatures must be consistently above zero degrees (for at least five to seven consecutive days)

* the ground must be thawed and free of frost around seasonal buildings

* available weather forecasts must provide confidence that the threat of sustained cold weather has passed

SANJAY MADAN GETS 10 YEAR JAIL FOR STEALING $47.4M FROM ONTARIO GOVT

CONTD. FROM PAGE 1

Sanjay Madan, who served as an IT Director within the Ministry of Education, pleaded guilty to multiple charges of fraud, breach of trust, and money laundering, which he committed by overseeing two complicated schemes to bilk millions of dollars from taxpayers, the Global News reported. Madan's lawyer Chris Sewratan said he feels "sorry" for his crimes and is taking "responsibility for everything".

Madan has agreed to re-pay the entire amount, $30 million of which, his lawyers say was immediately returned to the Ontario government, while the remainder can be repaid over the next 15 years.

His deception came to light during the Covid-19 pandemic when the government set up the support for students fund to give parents a one-time payment of $200 per child to offset the costs of learning from home during the pandemic.

Madan, who had access to the internal processing portal, siphoned off more than 43,000 support payments into 2,841 bank accounts under his name -- taking $10.8 million from the fund, according to Global News.

Criminal charges were withdrawn against Madan's wife Shalini and their two adult sons as part of a plea bargain, which was designed to serve as a signal that he alone bore responsibility for the fraud.

Madan's lawyer said he pleaded guilty to clear the names of his wife, Shalini Madan, and their two sons whose names were on some of the accounts used to defraud the province. According to media reports, the Ontario government has successfully obtained an injunction to freeze Madan family's assets in Canada as well as overseas in India. Totalling $28 million, those assets include six Toronto condos collectively worth $3 million. Madan's whole family was also employed with the Province of Ontario, though his sons have since resigned and wife was dismissed. The probe into the pandemic funds fraud then uncovered a larger nine-year scheme in which Madan received profits to the tune of $36.6 million. Madan's lawyer said he apologised to the taxpayers, the Ontario government, his family and colleagues for the crimes.

Over that period, the number of people employed has increased by 383,000, or 1.9 per cent, the national statistical agency added on Thursday. XI TELLS KIM JONG-UN TO BOLSTER ‘STRATEGIC GUIDANCE’ OVER BILATERAL TIES

Pyongyang’s state media on Saturday said that Chinese President Xi Jinping told North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that the two nations should bolster “strategic guidance” over bilateral ties. The remarks came as Kim received a message from Xi as the latter thanked the North Korean leader for congratulating him on his re-election as president of China, according to Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

In the message, Xi “attaches great importance to the relations between the two parties and two countries, expressing his willingness to accelerate the development of the socialist cause of the two countries and promote regional peace, stability, development and prosperity by strengthening the strategic guidance” over the China-DPRK relations,” Yonhap News Agency quoted the KCNA as saying.

DPRK stands for the North’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. China’s new ambassador to North Korea, Wang Yajun, who began his official activities earlier this week, delivered the message to Kim Song-nam, international department director of the Central Committee of the North’s ruling party, according to the KCNA. Wang’s arrival came amid speculation that the North will soon resume trade with China following years of its border closure over the Covid-19 pandemic.

Shehbaz says President Alvi is 'beholden' to Imran more than Constitution

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif castigated President Arif Alvi for returning the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill, 2023, unsigned and calling him a worker of the Pakistan Tehreeke-Insaf (PTI), according to a media report. The bill is aimed at curtailing the powers of the chief justice - including the suo motu and the formation of benches. The PTI has strongly condemned the move to pass the legislation and said it is an "attack on the judiciary", Geo News reported. "President Alvi returning the Supreme Court Bill duly passed by Parliament is most unfortunate," the prime minister said in a hard-hitting tweet hours after the president returned the bill to the legislature, Geo News reported.

He said the central government is defaming and degrading the Sikh community by framing them as anti-nationalist. He also alleged the central government is defaming Punjab through Amritpal Singh. In other words, the Indian economy had fared far better in those years than the IMF had estimated and, therefore, had “less room for catching up” than the rest of the world. 2023: THE FIRST QUARTER IS DISMAL

LILLY SINGH, ARJUN RAMPAL, HRITHIK SUPPORT PREITY ZINTA AFTER HARASSMENT POST

A slew of personalities including Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Lilly Singh, Hrithik Roshan and Malaika Arora and many others have come out in support of actress Preity Zinta, who spoke about being harassed in a post on social media. Preity on Saturday took to Instagram, where she talked about how an unknown woman 'planted a big wet kiss' next to her daughter Gia's mouth and how a 'handicapped man kept trying to stop' her for money in Mumbai while the paparazzis found it funny, laughed and did not help.

Commenting on the post, actor Arjun Rampal said: "Next time give me a call will sort them out."

Hrithik Roshan said: "Well done Pree."

Malaika Arora wrote: "You said it out loud and clear."

"Good on you for standing up for yourself. I know that can be hard. But it's important and true," wrote Lilly Singh.

THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2023 HAS COME TO AN END AND THE HINDI FILM INDUSTRY HAS LITTLE TO SHOW FOR ITSELF. THE SCENE HAS BEEN DISMAL, NOT BECAUSE OF THE FIRST QUARTER, BUT ALSO BECAUSE OF THE SECOND QUARTER, WHICH HOLDS NO PROMISE OF BOX-OFFICE BOOSTERS. A LOT OF PRODUCERS SEEM TO THINK IT IS EASIER TO CREATE CONTENT FOR OTT PLATFORMS, WHICH IS WHY MANY MAKERS HAVE OPTED TO PRODUCE FOR THAT MEDIUM. WHEN YOU MAKE OTT CONTENT, IT'S AN ALL-IN-ONE DEAL. YOU COMPLETE THE PROJECT, HAND IT OVER TO THE PLATFORM AND CASH OUT. NO HASSLES SUCH MARKETING OR COMPLYING TO THE TERMS OF CINEMA CHAINS TO ENDURE. IT IS YOU WHO MAKE A FILM AND IT IS SOME MARKETING WIZKID WHO'LL DECIDE HOW YOUR FILM SHOULD BE RELEASED. THE PROBLEM, THOUGH, IS THAT THEY KNOW LITTLE OR NOTHING ABOUT WHICH FILM NEEDS WHAT KIND OF HANDLING. WHAT IS MORE, ON OTT, YOU CAN BRING TO LIFE THE STORIES THAT ARE LONG EMBEDDED IN THE MINDS OF THE MASSES, BUT STILL, THE DETAILS ARE NOT KNOWN. AN EXAMPLE IS THE HARSHAD MEHTA CASE, WHICH WAS THE SUBJECT OF 'SCAM 1992: THE HARSHAD MEHTA STORY'. OR TAKE THE INSTANCE OF 'ROCKET BOYS'. YOU MAY HAVE HEARD ABOUT HOMI BHABHA AND VIKRAM SARABHAI, BUT KNEW LITTLE ABOUT THEM AND DID NOT DARE TO ASK FOR FEAR OF LOOKING IGNORANT. IF YOU MADE SOMETHING SIMILAR FOR THEATRICAL RELEASE, THE CINEMA MANAGEMENT WOULDN'T HAVE TOUCHED YOUR PRODUCT WITH A BARGEPOLE.

SHAHID, KRITI WRAP UP THEIR NEXT UNTITLED FILM ABOUT 'AN IMPOSSIBLE LOVE STORY'

Brace yourselves, for Salman Khan is returning as the lead player in a theatrical film after a four-year break. The release of the ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ trailer, naturally, had to be a bigticket affair and it did turn out that way on Monday.

The trailer features Salman as the ‘bhai’ of the masses and ‘jaan’ of families with an action-packed treat.

It kicks off with Salman reciting the opening sholka of the ‘Bhagavad Gita’ and deep dives into the budding romance between Bhai and his leading lady on screen, Pooja Hegde, transitioning immediately into an action saga with “facebreaking, bone-cracking, neck-twisting, hammer-hitting action”. The trailer is over three minutes in length and boasts of all aspects of a commercial formula-led Hindi film. It has bits of family emotions, comedy, romance, drama, music, and of course, action. It rests heavily on Salman’s shoulders, who does most of the heavy-hitting. It also comes across as a mix of previous Salman Khan films such as ‘Wanted’ (pay attention to the train action sequence), ‘Jai Ho’ (the whole talk about non-violence) and, of course, over-the-top action, which is the staple of Salman Khan films.

Scheduled to hit the big screen on April 21, coinciding with Eid, ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ is a Hindi action drama directed by Farhad Samji and produced by Salman Khan Films. It features Salman Khan and Telugu stars Venkatesh, Pooja Hegde and Jagapathi Babu in the lead roles with an ensemble supporting cast, extending from ‘Bigg Boss’ alums Shehnaaz Gill and Abdu Rozik to Salman’s ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ co-star Bhagyashree.

VIDYUT JAMMWAL REMEMBERS SIDHARTH SHUKLA, SHARES THROWBACK GYM PIC

Bollywood action star Vidyut Jammwal has remembered his friend and late actor Sidharth Shukla and shared a throwback picture on social media. Vid yut took to his Instagram stories, where he posted a picture of him standing next to Sidharth. It seems the picture was taken in the gym as the two are posing next to what seems to be gym equipment. In the image, Sidharth can be seen in a white T-shirt pa ired with gray pants while Vidyut is wearing a black cut sleeves T-shirt paired with black pants. The two actors are seen smiling at the camera as they flaunt their muscles. Sidharth Shukla, who was the winner of 'Bigg Boss 13', breathed his last on September 2, 2021 after a heart attack at the age of 40. ANANYA PANDAY AND ADITYA ROY KAPUR DATING? MOM BHAVANA FINALLY REVEALS IT ALL

Ananya Panday and Aditya Roy Kapur’s dating rumours have been making headlines for a long time now. Even though the two have never officially confirmed the same either in public or on social media, their fans are convinced that the two stars are a couple. However, looks like all of us are wrong. In a recent interview, Ananya’s mother Bhavana opened up about her daughter’s relationship secret and revealed that the Liger actress is single. “The fact is that Ananya is single and link ups happen in a profession like this. It’s okay. It’s like that’s a part and parcel of an actor’s life, and you have to take everything in, good or bad. I feel like they get so much love and adulation, so I’d rather genuinely focus on that than the negativity that comes with it, because the positives definitely outweigh the negative,” Bhavana told E-Times.

During the interaction, Bhavana also shared her mantra of preparing

Ananya for the showbiz world. She revealed how she had asked Ananya to not be ‘too hard on herself’. Besides this, she also asked her daughter to be a ‘good person, kind and respectful’.

“I also told her that whether you are at your highest of highs or lowest of lows, keep your feet firmly on the ground. As for professional advice, I don’t think it is my place because I’ve not been an actor. So I could only give her advice in terms of being a good human being," she added.

Bhavana Pandey also mentioned how she feels bad and gets hurt when Ananya is trolled on social media because of several reasons. She explained that while a person should take constructive criticism seriously, the ‘unnecessary trolling’ should be considered ‘noise’.

“We have so much to be grateful for, so to crib and complain about these kinds of things is actually unfair," she said.

The FIR was registered on the basis of a police complaint lodged by one Prashant Gunjalkar, who according to cops, frequently visits the Bandra-based residence of the popular filmstar and runs an artist management company. When Gunjalkar was present in Khan's office on Saturday afternoon, he noticed an email had come from the ID "Rohit Garg", the official said quoting the FIR. The e-mail stated Khan must have seen the interview given recently to a news channel by Bishnoi, and if not, he should see it. Addressing Gunjalkar, it said if Khan wants to close the matter, he should talk face-to-face with Goldy bhai, adding "there is still time but agli bar, jhatka dekhne ko milega" (next time he will receive shock).

The FIR was registered under sections 120-B (punishment for criminal conspiracy), 506-II (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) under the Indian Penal Code. TAYLOR SWIFT, JOE ALWYN CALL IT QUITS AFTER SIX YEARS OF DATING

British actor Joe Alwyn and singer Taylor Swift broke up a few weeks ago. According to Entertainment Tonight, the split was amicable and "it was not dramatic."

The portal was told "the relationship had just run its course. It's why (Alwyn) hasn't been spotted at any shows." Swift, 33, is currently on her The Eras tour, which heads to Tampa, Florida next week. It wasn't so long ago when Swift and Alwyn were said to have been in a great place in their relationship. They started dating in late 2016,

and a source told ET back in October that they were "doing great" and that their "relationship is super strong."

That update came just hours after Swift dropped her highly anticipated 10th studio album, Midnights, followed by seven additional songs released in her surprise 3am Edition of the album.

For his part, Alwyn, 32, told British Vogue in September 2018 that he's keenly aware fans always want to be in the know when it comes to his and Swift's relationship.

'THE CROWN' UNDERGOES REWRITE FOR SEASON 6 FOLLOWING GILLIAN ANDERSON'S EXIT

'The Crown' writers were forced to change the script for season six after it was revealed that Gillian Anderson would not be returning.

The 54-year-old actress previously portrayed former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on the show but, after scheduling conflicts prevented her from reprising the role, 'The Crown' writers had to hastily rewrite some of the scripts, reports aceshowbiz.com.

"Gillian's portrayal of Thatcher was met with global critical acclaim and she was a huge asset to 'The Crown'. It had been hoped she would be able to make an appearance in scenes around the golden wedding but sadly that has not been the case due to scheduling issues," a source told The Sun newspaper.

"As ever with the series, clever scripting will mean viewers will be none the wiser. It's been another blow for producers in wh at's already been a fairly dogged production." Gillian's portrayal of Thatcher in season four won her an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Meanwhile, Gillian previously insisted that 'The Crown' has made the royal family "more internationally loved, celebrated and understood." She tol d Total Film magazine: "It's a drama. There's a lot of researchers involved and a lot of people checking and double-checking and triplechecking." "There's a lot that has not been written about that could be written about. And if you knew the difference in those, you'd see there is a great deal of kindness and restraint. And I think, at the end of the day, there are incredibly compassionate and wel l-rounded takes on human beings." "And what you're left with is properly, maturely drawn, complex characters. And there's a lot that's in there that one has to say; if you didn't do it, we wouldn't be writing about it. I think the whole family is more internationally loved, celebrated and understood in a way that they wouldn't be were it not for the show."

Actor Jack Black has some ideas for 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' sequel and he is suggesting Pedro Pascal get cast as Wario. Black voices Bowser in the animated movie and although he is not sure if his character would return for a potential followup film, he would want 'The Mandalorian' star to voice Mario's arch-rival, reports 'Deadline'.

"It's not a given that Bowser will return. You know, I did a few 'Kung Fu Panda' movies, and it was a different villain every movie. They may do the same thing," Black told Game Spot. "You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain? Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario." The 'Nacho Libre' star recently made a cameo on Pascal's Disney+ 'Star Wars' spinoff series alongside Lizzo.

'AVATAR' ALMOST DIDN'T GET MADE AS PRODUCER STRUGGLED FOR FUNDS

"So Jim wrote 'Avatar' before we ever started filming 'Titanic' but we knew the technology did not exist to tell the story the way we wanted to tell the story," he told HeyUGuys.

"So we put it on the back burner until 2005 when we looked at the landscape of technology and said 'We could be the impetus to push it to the next level where we could finally make this movie.' And it wasn't about the 3-D, it was about the characters, it was about the world and putting them up there where they could be emotive and engaging." Jon went on to explain that the pair eventually secured a development deal with 20th Century Fox for the movie - which went on to become overtake 'Titanic' as the highest-grossing film of all time whilst its two sequels became the second and third highestgrossing respectively - but admitted that even being presented with a prototype, the studios were still hesitant to greenlight the project.

Allu Arjun is seen dressed in a saree and wearing gold jewellery in the first-look poster of ‘Pushpa: The Rule’, the much-awaited sequel of the hit movie.

The actor shared the poster of ‘Pushpa: The Rule’ on Twitter. The makers released the poster along with a teaser video — ‘Where is Pushpa?’ — on the eve of Allu Arjun’s birthday. Director Sukumar has raised the expectations of the audience with the three-minute special video introducing Pushpa and his world. After the huge success of ‘Pushpa: The Rise’, expectations are big from the sequel.

The video begins with the news that Pushpa has escaped from Tirupati jail with gunshot wounds. The police deploy a special unit to hunt down Pushpa in the forests. Pushpa’s supporters take to the streets and resort to violence following rumours of his death or his escape to some other country.

The chaotic situation pauses for a moment with the breaking news on a channel that Pushpa has been spotted in a jungle. The hidden camera footage from a nature reserve shows a tiger stepping away as Pushpa enters with his characteristic swagger. And he declares: “When an animal in a forest steps back, then you should know a tiger has come, but when tiger itself steps away, then it’s Pushpa who has come.” The video ends with the punchline: ‘Rule Pushpa Ka’. The much-awaited movie is likely to be released in the Summer of 2024.

He added: "And we went up to the studio at Fox at the time and we asked them to support us for a year, which they said yes to. We did a prototype test, that was very crude and we thought that was our floor, not our ceiling."

"We presented them with a whole package in 2006 but they weren't sure people would go see a movie with blue people had tails. After a series of circumstances, we were finally able to make the movie but it was not easy even after coming off of 'Titanic'."

Besides the OTT platforms, one must also consider television channels. There are now hundreds of them for national viewers as well as the ones who are more comfortable with regional languages. All have been dishing out interesting content with great production values.

Entertainment that uses action and comedy and romance is fine but the generation now is curious and is open to such content as 'Scam 1992' and 'Rocket Boys'.

As for filmmakers, they, sadly, can't think beyond the formula. They now dish out the same old stuff costing crores, what the earlier generation delivered for lakhs. Only, these are much inferior when compared to earlier films.

As things stand now, a normal film with a big star would cost on average Rs 200 crore. Because these big stars charge Rs 100 crore or more. That limits the budget for the actual making of the film. Add to that the cost of special effects to make these aged stars look younger.

And then, in most cases, add the cost of acquiring the remake rights paid to a South Indian producer (almost all Hindi films are remakes of South Indian productions, when they are not inspired by Hollywood movies). With this kind of input costs, a film with a major star needs to do business of at least Rs 500 crore to show some profit. It's a highstake risk which is not worth taking because most films fail to manage to make that kind of money.

Here, one may argue that there are also satellite rights and OTT rights that contribute to a film's recovery. But these mediums no longer go by the filmmaker's word when it comes to box-office figures and have tied up the final cost of a film's rights to its box-office collections. To them, the face value of a film does not matter anymore the way it did initially when they entered the Indian market. If one observes closely, there are no big stars in OTT programming. Most feature those who played character roles in films or those who were not getting films anymore. It seems, what sells is content and performances. This year so far, 12 films were released directly on OTT and about 18 after a formal theatrical release.

So, what does the industry have to show for the first three months? Two films stood their ground to a varied extent namely 'Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar' and 'Pathaan'. Between them, they have collected approximately Rs 700 crore.

Out of these, 'Pathaan' claims a take of Rs 500 crore; 'Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar' collected Rs 120 crore. Films such as 'Kuttey', 'Gandhi Godse:

Ek Yudh', 'Shehzaada', 'Selfiee', 'Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway', 'Zwigato' and 'Bheed' contributed the rest. Other small films contributed around Rs 100 crore. 'Bhola' released at the fag end of March and its business will reflect only later. Compare this with the first quarter of 2019 when there were quite a few films that hovered around Rs 100 crore or more. These films included 'Uri', 'Manikarnika', 'Total Dhamaal', 'Gully Boy', 'Luka Chuppi', 'Badla', 'Kesari', along with 'Junglee', 'The Accidental Prime Minister', 'Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To' and 'Thackeray' contributing another Rs 100 crore, all adding up to Rs 1,100 crore for the first quarter.

So, were it not for 'Pathaan', this quarter would have been a total disaster.

It does not stop at the dismal first quarter, the next quarter promises

nothing material in the offing. This is because in the quarter that just closed, there has been no big announcement. Filmmakers such as Sajid Nadiadwala, Karan Johar or other big-time producers have not been hasty in announcing new projects -- the circumstances being so uncertain. Also, there are no corporate houses to bankroll huge projects. It has always been the norm: you earn from this industry, but never reinvest your earnings (except in property). Movies have always been made on borrowed or outside monies. One announcement that made it to the media in the first quarter was about 'Pathaan vs Tiger' from Yash Raj Films. The announcement sounds gimmicky, aimed at keeping it in the media glare and garnering the initial audience for the first few days. After all, the two stars fell apart after doing Rakesh Roshan's 'Karan Arjun' (1995). For whatever differences they had with Rakesh Roshan, both are said to have vowed never to work with him again. Shah Rukh Khan, however, went ahead and did 'Koylaa' for the same producer. Of course, some maturity of thinking did lead to guest roles in each other's films in this duration.

If your film gets footfalls in the first few days, it adds to a film's prospects on the satellite and OTT circuits. They no longer buy films blindly on face value. Their buying is now determined by the box-office figures generated by a film. A film's satellite rights are worth 25 per cent and the OTT rights 50 per cent of the box office collections. Inflated collections are good for social media and even news channels. OTT and satellite platforms are not fooled by these figures anymore. They ask for GST payment receipts.

In such circumstances, cinema chain holders are facing tough times. Footfalls have still not returned to pre-Covid days.

As one may be aware, almost all, save a few, major multiplex properties are on rent and, lately, films are not doing well enough for the cinemas to be comfortable paying these rents. In such an event, they are said to have proposed that the property owners take a share in the box-office revenue instead of the rents!

Due to the desperate situation cinemas face, the managements came up with various ways to generate extra revenue with new ideas. Usually, the ideas they come up with don't generate money. The whizkids at PVR and INOX have come up with one such idea, which can be only be described as harebrained. This cinema chain has plans for the viewers to pay Re 1 and watch release trailers of various new films in a 30-minute slot!

Somebody has to be really naive to take out time and watch 30 minutes of trailers of forthcoming films even for free, let alone Re 1. Does the Re 1 include parking? Considering there is a short supply of cinema content internationally and at home, where will the new trailers come from?

How do you check if one buys a Re 1 ticket, loiters around the lobby and sneaks into any other auditorium screening a full-length film? The number of ushers at these multi-screen cinemas is very limited. What about the risk that the trailer you screen fails to inspire or even disappoints, so much so that the viewer decides not to watch the film when released? It may lead to rating the trailers. And what purpose will your generous offer serve when every teaser or trailer is instantly available on YouTube after it is put in the public domain?

RYAN REYNOLDS BUYS A $1.8 MILLION HOME IN WELSH VILLAGE

'Deadpool' star Ryan Reynolds has snapped up a $1.8 million house in a small Welsh village following his Wrexham FC success. The Hollywood A-lister, 46, has become a local hero thanks to pumping cash into the struggling football club and has shown his commitment by owning a property in the area, reports Mirror.co.uk. The actor looks set to shift from the bright lights of New York to the village of Marford, just five miles from his football ground. It will be a stark contrast from the star's $5.3 million in the Big Apple, where he lives with actress wife Blake Lively and their four children. A source told The Sun: "Ryan is moving to Marford and it's all the locals can talk about. His house is on the poshest road." The source further mentioned, quoted by Mirror.co.uk: "The most famous perso n from Marford is Tim Vincent from Blue Peter, so a Hollywood star is a step up. It might not be the Big Apple but the red carpet will be rolled out when Ryan comes to town." Ryan and Hollywood actor Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham FC back in 2020 and have spent $10.2 million on the club as it bids for promotion to the Football League.

The film will "tell the story of rebuilding the New Jedi Order and the powers that rise to tear it down," director Sharmeen Oba id-Chinoy explained, reports aceshowbiz.com.

She went on: "I've always been attracted to the hero's journey and the fact that the world needs many more heroes."

The filmmaker added she had been immersing herself in a Jedi Academy with a "powerful Jedi master" and Daisy then walked out on stage. She said: "My heart is pounding. I'm very thrilled to be continuing this journey."

The event also revealed two other 'Star Wars' films in the pipeline, including one from James Mangold and another from 'The Man dalorian' executive producer Dave Filoni and producer Jon Favreau.

'INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY' TRAILER HINTS AT END OF INDY'S SEARCH

Indiana Jones is back for his one last adventure in the first full trailer for 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny'.

The approximately two-minute video sees Harrison Ford's titular character getting dragged out of retirement, reports aceshowbiz .com. The trailer puts Indy back into action, riding a horse through a New York street parade, getting involved in a street chase aro und dusty Moroccan streets and jumping out of a burning plane with his goddaughter Helena, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The video also gives more insight into what's happening in the movie as he's visited by Helena, who knows he once found "a dial that could change the course of history" on a train with the Nazi Voller (Mads Mikkelsen). Indy cautiously tells her that what she's searching for made her own father go crazy.

Despite being reluctantly dragged into the adventure, it's apparently all worth it as he gets to find what he's been looking for all this time.

"But I've been looking for this...all my life," he says at the end of the video, as the scene sees him looking mesmerised.

"They haven't seen each other for a very long time and in some ways she's the worst thing that could happen to him at this time in his life, but also the best thing," Waller-Bridge said of Indy and Helena's relationship on the Star Wars Celebration stage. Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the upcoming fifth 'Indiana Jones' movie will be the last installment in the franchise. Director James Mangold said in a statement: "My legendary collaborators and I are very excited to share a brand new and final I ndiana Jones adventure with you!" Antonio Banderas also stars as one of the villains, while John Rhys-Davies reprises his role as Sallah and Toby Jones joins the cast as Basil.

She captioned it: "Two events this week have left me a bit shaken. 1 regarding my daughter Gia-where a woman tried to take her photo. When we politely asked her not to, she walked away, then suddenly scooped my daughter in her arms & planted a big wet kiss next to her mouth & ran off saying what a cute baby. This woman lives in an elite building & happened to be in the garden where my kids were playing. If I wasn't a celebrity I probably would have reacted badly but kept my cool as I didn't want to make a scene."

"U can see the 2nd incident here. I had a plane to catch & this handicapped man kept trying to stop me. Over the years he has harassed me for money & I have given it to him when I could. This time when he asked for money I said sorry today I have no cash, just a credit card. The lady with me gave him some money from her purse. He threw it back at her cuz it wasn't enough & started getting aggressive. As u can see, he followed us for some time & got more aggressive." "The photographers found this incident funny. Instead of helping us they filmed & laughed. NO ONE told him not to follow the car or harass us as anyone could have got hurt. Had there been an accident, I would have been blamed. Me being a celebrity would have been questioned. Bollywood would have been blamed & a lot of negativity would have spread." "I think it's high time people realise that I'm a human being first, then a mom & then a celebrity. I also don't need to apologise for my success constantly & be bullied for it cuz I've worked very hard to get where I am," she also said. She added that she has an equal right like anyone else in this country to live the way she wants and urged everyone to think before judging and stop blaming celebrities for everything. "Most importantly my children are NOT part of a package deal & are not meant to be preyed on so please leave my kids alone & don't come to them for photos or touch/grab them. They are infants & need to be treated like infants, not celebrities," added Preity.

IPL 2023: STOINIS, POORAN FIFTIES LEAD LUCKNOW SUPERGIANTS TO THRILLING ONE-WICKET WIN OVER ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE

Lucknow Super Giants were 37/3 at the end of power-play, with Royal Challengers Bangalore firmly on top of them in a run chase of 213 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium but Marcus Stoinis brought his side back with his impressive 30-ball 65 while Nicholas Pooran smashed a sensational 19-ball 62, including hitting fastest fifty of the season in 15 balls, to take the team to a last-ball thrilling one-wicket victory in a dramatic match, here on Monday.

Mohammed Siraj gave Bangalore an ideal start as Kyle Mayers chopped on to his stumps. Wayne Parnell dealt double blows to Lucknow, having Deepak Hooda nick behind a cutter to Dinesh Karthik and then forcing Krunal Pandya to edge off an outswinger to the keeper. Stoinis began his onslaught by flicking off the pads for six off Harshal Patel, then slashed through point and smacked a straight drive down the ground for back-to-back fours. He welcomed Karn Sharma with a pulled six over deep mid-wicket and struck a brace of fours. A lofted driven six over long-off against Shahbaz Ahmed got Stoinis his fifty in 25 balls. He hit a six each off Karn and Shahbaz, before slicing to deep point off the former. With Rahul flicking straight to deep square leg off Siraj in the 12th over, it felt all was over for Lucknow. But Pooran had other plans, starting his blitz with a classic square cut off Siraj, with Ayush Badoni taking a four too off him. While Badoni flicked Karn off his legs for four, Pooran upped the ante with successive sixes and teared into Harshal with two pulled sixes, apart from a four cut through short third man. Parnell came under attack from Pooran, with the left-hander slicing him twice for fours apart from a six whacked over long-on which got him his fifty in just 15 balls. Badoni was lucky in an outside edge flying over short

third man for four off Willey while Pooran ended the 16th over with a magnificent swing over deep square leg for six. His blitzkrieg came to an end in the 17th over when he picked out deep backward square leg off a full toss from Siraj. Jaydev Unadkat guided a yorker past keeper for four off Harshal while Badoni pulled Parnell for another boundary. Badoni moved across to scoop a six off Parnell, but his bat crashed into the stumps to be out hit-wicket. As Bangalore fielded four fielders outside the circle in final over due to over rate penalty, Harshal added more drama by castling Mark Wood and had Unadkat holing out to a juggling long-on. After Harshal’s attempt to run out Ravi Bishnoi twice didn’t happen, a fumble from Karthik behind allowed Bishnoi and Avesh Khan to go for a leg-bye, taking Lucknow to a thrilling last ball victory. Earlier, Virat Kohli was at his aggressive best in attacking pacers in power-play while making 61 off 44 balls. Faf du Plessis was at 33 off 31 balls and looked scratchy but he found his timing to be unbeaten on 79 from 46 deliveries. Glenn Maxwell smacked 59 off just 29 balls, as the crowd was treated to some scintillating strokeplay with Bangalore reaching 212/2 in 20 overs. Kohli got his first boundary with a not-so-convincing shot — getting a fat topedge on a pull off Avesh. When offered width on the very next ball, Kohli drove authoritatively through extra cover for four. Kohli further attacked Avesh in his second over through a brace of crisp drives on the up through cover, and welcomed Krunal Pandya with a delightful loft for six over long-on. Wood’s extra pace didn’t trouble Kohli as he brought out the drive over the bowler’s head for four and on the next ball, rocked back to pull over midwicket for six.

Rinku Singh's five sixes help Kolkata pull off an unimaginable heist against Gujarat

With five balls left in the final over, Kolkata Knight Riders needed 28 runs, with a victory for Gujarat Titans looking imminent, especially after stand-in captain Rashid Khan took a hat-trick.

But Rinku Singh smashed five successive sixes on the last five balls off Yash Dayal to complete an improbable heist in the history of IPL and give Kolkata a memorable three-wicket victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Fifties from B Sai Sudharsan and Vijay Shankar, including him smashing Lockie Ferguson and Shardul Thakur for five sixes and two fours in the 19th and 20 overs, yielding 45 runs overall, took Gujarat to 204/4 in 20 overs.

In reply, Venkatesh Iyer smashed 83 off 40 balls and shared a 100-run partnership off 55 balls with captain Nitish Rana to take Kolkata to victory. But 'ashid's hat-trick in the 17th overturned the game in G'jarat's favour before Rinku brought in another twist through his unbeaten 48 in a jaw-dropping display of strokeplay to seal a Kolkata win. RahmanullahGurbaz fell to a short ball from Mohammed Shami in the third over, with short leg holding on to the catch and avoiding a collision with substitute keeper KS Bharat. Josh Little sent back N Jagadeesan in the fourth over by having him pull straight to deep square leg. Iyer, coming in as an impact player for Suyash Sharma, got off the mark with an upper cut over the third man for six. Every shot coming from his bat was finely middled - like the punch off Shami, executing a deft shot off Alzarri Joseph and pulling off Dayal to hit a boundary each in the last three overs of power-play. After the field restrictions were lifted, Iyer pulled Dayal for a four and six in the seventh over. In the next over, Rana pulled and cut off Alzarri Joseph for two sixes. Rashid brought himself on in the ninth over, but Iyer slog-swept him for six, followed by Rana pulling for four more in the 11th over. In the next over, Iyer reached his fifty in 26 balls by flicking Dayal past short fine leg for four, followed by hitting a brace of sixes over square leg and long-off. Boundaries continued to flow as

MEN’S ODI PLAYER RANKINGS: SHUBMAN RISES TO FOURTH, SOUTH AFRICA’S MARKRAM MAKES BIG GAINS

India’s Shubman Gill has moved up one spot to number four in the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings due to the week’s results and movements in the rankings.

Gill reached a career-best batting ranking of No 4 with 738 points, placing him behind Babar Azam (887) of Pakistan, Rassie van der Dussen (777) of South Africa and Imam-ul Haq (740) of Pakistan. South Africa batter Aiden Markram has made significant gains in the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings after hitting a career-best 175 against the Netherlands over the past week.

Markram gained 13 spots to reach 41st position in the batting rankings and 16 places to 32nd in the all-rounders’ list, another career-best feat in each as South Africa beat the Dutch 2-0 in their three-match series in Johannesburg. They edged closer to automatic qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India later this year. The Netherlands batters also made good progress, with Max O’Dowd (up to 75th from 78th), Vikramjit Singh (up to 109th from 119th) and Teja Ndiamanuru (up to 138th from 154th) the most notable mentions. Other gains were made by New Zealand’s Henry Nicholls, who climbed two spots to 69 in the batting rankings and his teammate Will Young, who leapt 60 spots to a personal best 143rd following their 2-0 series victory over Sri Lanka.

SEIFERT DOES IT AGAIN AS NEW ZEALAND BEAT SRI LANKA, WIN SERIES 2-1

Opener Tim Seifert struck a blazing 88 off 48 deliveries to help New Zealand chase a modest target to beat Sri Lanka by four wickets in the third T20I and win the three-match T20I series 2-1, here on Saturday. Opening the innings with Chad Bowes (17), Tim Seifert struck his second successive half-century after an unbeaten 79 in the second T20I in Dunedin won by the Black Caps. He added 53 runs for the first wicket partnership and then raised another 84 runs for the third wicket with skipper Tom Latham (31) as New Zealand chased the target of 183. Sri Lanka's innings of 182/4 in 20 overs was built around a 48-ball 73 by wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis, who got good support from Kusal Perera (33). But in the end, that score was not enough to stop New Zealand as they lost a couple of quick wickets but eventually reached 183/6 in the final over. With Seifert breezing to his half-century off 26 balls, hitting five boundaries and three maximums, New Zealand was always on course in their chase. Seifert was eventually out at 157/3 in the 17th over but by that time the Black Caps were on course to victory. Just when it looked like Seifert would go on to get a century, he was slapped one straight to Kasun Rajitha at cover off Pramod Madushan for 88. His 48-ball knock was studded with 10 boundaries and three sixes. Daryl Mitchell (15), Mark Chapman (16) and James Neesham (0) were out quickly but that did not stop New Zealand from reaching the target after a dramatic final over in which three wickets fell at the Sir John Davies Oval. Rachin Ravindra scored a double off the fifth ball of the final over to seal victory for the Black Caps. Earlier, Kusal Mendis was dropped twice on his way to making 73 off 48 for the visitors, who were sent in to bat first by Tom Latham.

Rana brought out the sweep and reverse-sweep against Rashid. But Joseph broke the century-partnership in the 16th over as Rana chipped straight to mid-off.

Iyer continued to keep Kolkata in the hunt, hitting Little for two fours in the 15th over, before ending the over with a clean swing over longoff for six. His blistering knock came to an end in the next over when he holed out to long-on off Joseph.

The crowd suddenly found its noise back and that got louder in the 17th over when Rashid had Andre Russell caught behind off an inside edge, Sunil Narine caught at deep mid-wicket and trapped Shardul Thakur lbw with a googly to complete a sensational hat-trick.

But Rinku had other ideas - hitting Little straight down the ground for six and pulling him through square leg for four in the 19th over. With 29 needed off the final over, Rinku feasted on poor balls from Dayal by smashing a hat-trick of sixes over wide long-off, backward square leg and long-off. He then hit successive sixes over long-on fence to give Kolkata an unimaginable victory.

IPL 2023: TRIPATHI, MARKANDE HELP SUNRISERS BEAT PUNJAB KINGS DESPITE DHAWAN'S 99 NOT OUT

Rahul Tripathi smashed a vital unbeaten half-century after spinner Mayank

Markande claimed a four-fer on debut as Sunrisers Hyderabad thrashed

Punjab Kings, for whom Shikhar Dhawan blasted 99 not out, by eight wickets in Match 14 of IPL 2023 here on Sunday. , Tripathi smacked 74 off 48 deliveries while skipper Aiden Markram smashed 37 off 21 deliveries as they raised 100 runs for the unfinished third wicket partnership off 51 balls as Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 145/ 2 in 17.1 overs chasing a modest score of 143/9 in 20 overs built on an unbeaten 99 by PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan.

The PBKS innings was destroyed by rookie leg spinner Markahde who claimed his first four-fer with a 4-15, making use of the conditions.

Markande, making his debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad, was the pick of the SRH bowlers as he claimed the wickets of Sam Curran (22), Shahrukh Khan (5), Rahul Chahar (0) and Nathan Ellis (0), bowling to a superb line and length and mixing up his googlies and leg-spinners superbly to keep the batter guessing.

This was Sunrisers Hyderabad's first win this season after defeats in their first two matches. PBKS suffered their first defeat after two wins. Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a modest start as they managed 34/1 in the Power-play. At the same time, Punjab Kings were 41/3.

The fact that they did not lose too many wickets early in their innings, thus making their chase of the modest target of 144 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here, look early.

There was an early stutter when they lost Harry Brook for 13 after he had struck three fours during his 14-ball stay. Mayank Agarwal and Rahul Tripathi took the score to 47 before Agarwal, who has moved PBKS to SRH this season, was out after a 20-ball 21, hitting three fours.

However, Rahul Tripathi and skipper Aiden Markram batted sensibly on a pitch that was offering swing and seam and was also helping the spinners.

Tripathi was the star for the team as he slogged Rahul Chahar flat over wide midwicket just over Sam Curran for a six and then struck the spinner for fours off successive balls in the 9th over. Harpreet Brar was smacked for three fours in the 10th over as Tripathi hammered fours off successive deliveries, the second one a beauty to execute which he came down the

track and lofted inside out over extra cover.

He smashed two sixes off Mohit Rathee and followed up the second one with a reverse-sweep four over point and another four in the next ball, driving square behind point and beating the sweeper to the rope. He got good support from his skipper Aiden Markram as they added 100 runs for the unfinished third-wicket partnership off 51 deliveries.

Initially, the South African batter played second fiddle to Tripathi before slicing Nathan Ellist behind point for a four. He hammered Ellis for four successive fours in the 17th over as Sunrisers romped to victory. Skipper Shikhar Dhawan played a lone hand for Punjab Kings, smashing an unbeaten 99 as he batted through the innings, helping his team recover from 88/9 to reach a modest total of 143/9 in 20 overs. At one time, it looked like Punjab may not even reach 100, but Dhawan had other ideas as he went after the bowling, shielding last-man Mohit Rathee (1 not out) to add 55 runs for the last-wicket partnership. Dhawan blasted 12 boundaries and five sixes during his sensational innings and ended up scoring 69.2% of his team's runs. This is the second-highest per cent after Brendon McCullum blazed to 158 out of KKR's total of 222 (71.2%) in the first match in IPL history in 2008. SRH ended the Power-play at 41/3 before Sam Curran and Dhawan repaired the innings a bit and took them past 50. Curran swatted Jansen for a six over wide long-on and then followed it up with a drive over extra-cover for a one-bounce four. The English batter punched W Sundar for four and struck Mayank Markande for a boundary in the 9th over. But Markande had the last laugh as he claimed Curran with a superb googly spinning away as the batter miscued an easy catch to short third man. He scored 22 off 15 balls, hitting three fours and one six as PBKS were down to 63/4. Sikandar Raza (5), M Shahrukh Khan (4), Harpreet Brar (1), Rahul Chahar (0) and Nathan Ellis (0) were out in quick succession as PBKS 88/9 and in danger of failing to cross the 100-run mark. However, skipper Shikhar Dhawan launched a brilliant onslaught and found a willing par tner in Mohit Rathee as they added 55 runs from 31 balls for the last wicket partnership to take PBKS to a decent score. Rathee scored only one run in that partnership.

CHARLESTON OPEN: ONS JABEUR STUNS BENCIC TO CLINCH FIRST

TITLE OF THE SEASON

Last year's runner-up, Ons Jabeur of Tunisia exacted revenge on reigning champion Belinda Bencic to capture the 2023 Charleston Open with a tight straight-sets victory over the Swiss player. The Tunisian world No. 5 battled from a break down in the first set and then held her nerve in set two ? to move to 154 in her Charleston career, beating the Swiss star 7-6(6) 6-4. This was her fourth career title and first of the season. Interestingly, Jabeur and Bencic were the first duo to face off in back-to-back finals in tournament history.

"I've been wanting to win this tournament for a long time. People have been amazing to me. So it's nice to have a great memory here in Charleston and this is a pretty good start to the clay season," Jabeur said.

"I'm very excited to go to Paris and celebrate with my family and with my little nephew, who was just born three weeks ago. This is his gift. He doesn't know it, but it's his gift."

Jabeur was just 4-4 coming into Charleston having undergone minor knee surgery in February. The No. 2 seed didn't drop a set all week, including a win over 2017 champion Daria Kasatkina in the rain on Saturday afternoon.

With a win, Jabeur moved back up to world No. 4 as Charleston kicked off the clay swing on the WTA Tour, in which Jabeur is the defending champion in Madrid.

Since the start of the 2020 season, the Tunisian has now won 37 matches on clay, the most of any player on tour, one more than IgaSwiatek during that span. On the other hand, allAmerican pair Danielle Collins and Desirae Krawczyk saved two match points to defeat top seeds Giuliana Olmos and Ena Shibahara 0-6, 6-4 [14-12] to win the women's doubles title.

GEN Z HOMEBUYERS CONSIDER SMART FEATURES, NEW BUILDS AND PRIORITIZE SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS, NEW SURVEY SHOWS

With 2022 having seen a notable increase in mortgage rates compared to historical lows in 2020-21, and with many economic factors to watch based on the first quarter of 2023, many U.S. homebuyers and sellers are rethinking their approach to achieving their real estate goals, according to a study commissioned by RE/MAX, the #1 name in real estate*.

The global real estate franchisor released a comprehensive, current analysis of consumer tendencies and professional strategies around buying, selling, or owning a home. The U.S. Future of Real Estate 2023 Report was developed in partnership with the advertising agency Camp + King and conducted by leading consumer insights agency Canvas8. The research, which included a survey of more than 2,900 American homebuyers or sellers, along with expert interviews with real estate researchers and economists, identified six key themes exploring how people's attitudes and values toward buying, owning, and selling homes are shifting.

As a real estate franchisor dedicated to helping real estate professionals deliver a better customer experience, RE/MAX commissioned the report to uncover valuable insights for agents. The six key themes identified in the report as main trends and

mindsets impacting homebuying and selling in 2023 are:

1. Information Overload - People want help making better sense of the homebuying and selling process.

2. Real Talk - People want real estate agents to offer more humancentered support.

3. Modern Adaptability - People are making compromises in search of stability.

4. Future-Proofed Properties - People are looking for self-sustaining, resilient homes.

5. New Hubs - People are looking for areas that offer them the opportunity to connect with a community.

6. Curated Control - People want spaces they can optimize for work and play.

"The events of the past few years have made homebuyers more deliberate about what a home should offer them," said Nick Bailey, RE/MAX President and CEO. "A home purchase is one of the largest transactions a person will make in their lifetime, so it's important for them to have a clear understanding about what they're seeking in a home. Research like this can help a real estate professional guide them in their search."

Hyundai Motor Group said on Tuesday it will invest 24 trillion won ($18.2 billion) in its domestic electric vehicle (EV) production facilities and other EV projects by 2030. Hyundai Motor, its smaller affiliate Kia and auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis will collectively make the investment to become the world's No. 3 EV maker in terms of sales by 2030, the group said in a statement. The move is in line with global carmakers' plans to fill their lineups with zero-emission vehicles to help slow the pace of global warming. The companies will spend most of the planned investments in expanding their existing EV production lines, developing future mobility parts and technologies, establishing the EV infrastructure and exploring new EV business opportunities, reports Yonhap news agency. The latest investment figure has been revised up from 21 trillion won announced by the Korean automotive group in May last year. Hyundai Motor and Kia are aiming to sell a combined 3.64 million all-electric vehicles in global markets in 2030. In this year's CEO Investor Day last week, Kia said it aims to sell 1.6 million EVs in 2030.

EATING HANDFUL OF NUTS & SEEDS

DAILY CAN LOWER HEART RISK BY 25%

LONDON: Want to boost your heart health? Eating a handful of nuts and seeds can help you reduce the risk of heart disease by 25 per cent, according to a new study. The study showed nuts lower cholesterol levels and are linked to a lower risk of cardio-vascular disease. By eating nuts, you reduce your risk of suffering or dying from a heart attack.

One of the reasons is the composition of fatty acids in nuts, the researchers said. "Even though nuts cannot be used to treat high cholesterol, we believe that the effect is significant enough to be used as a preventive measure amongst the general population," Erik Arnesen, research fellow at the University of Oslo said. Researchers from the University of Oslo in Norway and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 60 previous studies. "If you eat a handful of nuts every day, that is around 30 grams, you will have a 20 to 25 per cent lower risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease. Many people do not eat nuts or seeds at all," Arnesen said, in the paper published in the journal Food & Nutrition Research.

5 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD INCORPORATE PEPTIDES IN YOUR SKINCARE

Over the past few years, skincare and the patterns related to it have changed significantly. Every two months, we notice a particular ingredient or product trending strongly in the market, but it's important to know what would be best for your complexion and avoid following trends without doing your research. Among these popular ingredients is peptide.

Peptides are amino acids that can pass through the skin's protective layer and assist your body in produc ing collagen on its own, internally. Malini Adapureddy lists five ways that peptides can improve your complexion in order to help you learn m ore about this miraculous ingredient.

Anti-aging properties

When peptides are applied directly to the skin, they can pass through the outer layer and penetrate deeper, where collagen is formed, and further stimulate the formation of collagen. Peptides are thus a promising ingredient in skincare products for their ability to stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity, and lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. However, it's important to note that the effectiveness of peptides in skincare products may vary depending on the specific peptide used and the product formulation. Deconstruct's Retinol & Peptide Serum may be the best choice as this power combination of Retinol and Peptides (Proteasyl) works effectively on minimising the signs of ageing and also nourishes and moisturises skin to fight fine lines and wrinkles.

Improved skin barrier

The body's first line of defence against bacteria, UV radiation, pollution, and other particles, is the skin barrier. Over-exfoliation, exposure to cigarette smoke and other pollutants, and even poor sleep, can harm

the skin barrier. Pep tides can help improve this barrier function by stimulating the production of new skin cells, increasing the production of collagen and elastin, and promoting the retention of moisture in the skin.

Reduced inflammation

Inflammation is a natural response of the body to injury or infection, but chronic inflammation can lead to tissue damage and accelerate the ageing process. Peptides can help reduce inflammation in the skin by modulating the activity of certain molecules involved in inflammatory response, leading to a healthier, more youthful appearance.

Helps achieve even skin tone

Uneven skin tone, also known as hyperpigmentation, can be caused by various factors, such as sun exposure, hormonal changes, and ageing. Peptides can help achieve even skin tone by regulating the production of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to the skin. By preventing the skin from various harmful external factors, peptides can also reduce the formation of dark spots and other signs of skin damage.

Improves skin hydration

Peptides can help with skin hydration by promoting the production of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that plays a crucial role in maintaining the skin's moisture levels. Peptides have enzymes that can help to maintain the levels of hyaluronic acid in the skin, leading to increased hydration and improved skin texture, keeping the skin hydrated and plump. Peptides have the potential to increase collagen synthesis, increase skin elasticity, and lessen the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles in skincare products.

Nagarmotha is a powerful ingredient known for its astringent and antimicrobial properties. It helps prevent excessive oil production, balances skin tone, unclogs pores, and prevents signs of aging. Its natural exfoliating properties improve skin texture and firmness while acting as an antioxidant to protect against free radical damage.

Chandan

Chandan, also known as sandalwood, is a sacred ingredient with a musty fragrance that has been used in many rituals for centuries. This herb has powerful healing properties that help eliminate scars, blemishes, and dark spots. It also removes impurities from the skin, leaving it with a healthy glow. Moreover, Chandan's anti-inflammatory properties make it an ideal remedy for sunburns and rashes.

Badam oil

Badam oil, also known as almond oil, has been used since ancient times as a remedy for dry skin, hypertrophic scars, and skin regeneration. It has been a popular ingredient in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries due to its ability to soothe, tone, and heal minor skin abrasions and scrapes. The high nutritional value of almonds makes almond oil highly beneficial for the skin, reducing inflammation, protecting against UV damage, and rehydrating the skin.

Bahumanjari oil

Bahumanjari oil, also known as Tulsi oil, is a highly regarded oil for its ability to promote healthy and glowing skin. Its deep-cleansing properties effectively remove excess oil, dirt, and other impurities, leaving the skin refreshed and rejuvenated. IMPACT OF SCREEN TIME ON YOUR CHILD'S DEVELOPMENT: A GUIDE FOR PARENTS

With the increasing prevalence of digital devices, screen time has become a part of most children's lives. From smartphones to tablets to laptops, kids are spending more time than ever before in front of screens. While screen time can have benefits, such as educ ational apps and social media platforms, excessive use can have a negative impact on a child's development. Research has shown that excessive screen time can lead to obesity, sleep disturbances, and behavioral problems in children. Mor eover, the blue light emitted by screens can disrupt a child's circadian rhythm, leading to difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep.

Excessive screen time can also affect a child's social and emotional development. Too much screen time can limit a child's ability to communicate with others and form social relationships. It can also lead to attention problems and reduce a child's ability to focus on tasks. As a parent, it's important to manage your child's screen time and limit their exposure to screens. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under 18 months avoid screen time altogether, while children aged 2-5 should have no more t han one hour of screen time per day.

To manage your child's screen time, set clear limits on when and how long they can use screens. Encourage other activities, such as reading, outdoor play, and board games. Make screen-free zones in your home, such as the dining table or bedroom, and limit scr een time before bed to help your child get a good sleep.

Another way to manage your child's screen time is to use parental controls. Most devices and apps have built-in parental controls that allow you to set limits on screen time and restrict access to certain apps or content.

Screen time can have a significant impact on a child's development, both positively and negatively. As a parent, it's essential to manage your child's screen time and promote a healthy balance of screen time and other activities. By setting clear limits and using p arental controls, you can help your child develop into a well-rounded individual in the digital age.

MICRONEEDLING: SAY GOODBYE TO SCARS AND UNEVEN SKIN TONE

Scarring is a common problem that affects many people, particularly those who have suffered from acne, injury, or surgery. Scars can be unsightly and can affect a person's self-esteem and confidence. While there are several treatments available for scarring, microneedling has emerged as a popular and effective treatment option. A minimally invasive procedure called microneedling, also referred to as collagen induction therapy, utilises a device equipped with tiny needles to generate microscopic punctures on the skin. These tiny punctures stimulate the body's natural healing process, triggering the production of new collagen and elastin, which are essential for healthy, youthful-looking skin.

When used to treat scars, microneedling can help to reduce the appearance of scars by stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin. This helps to improve the texture and tone of the skin, resulting in a smoother, more even complexion. Microneedling can be used to treat a range of scars, including acne scars, surgical scars, and stretch marks.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed in a dermatologist's office or clinic. The procedure typically takes less than an hour, and there is little to no downtime required. Patients may experience some redness and mild swelling after the procedure, but this usually subsides within a day or two. The procedure is generally well-tolerated, and the risk of complications is low. However, it is important to consult with a dermatologist before undergoing microneedling to ensure that it is the right treatment option for your specific needs.

ROLE OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS IN FIGHTING AGAINST VIRAL INFECTIONS AND BOOSTING IMMUNITY

One of the most difficult eras in human history, Covid-19, arose. Globally, the pandemic caused unprecedented health crises, economic turbulence, and societal unrest.

Communities c onfronted isolation, and healthcare systems were stretched to their breaking point. The quick worldwide effort to create vaccines demonstrated humanity's adaptability, but Covid19's long-term effects will serve as a stark warning of the importance of being ready.

A sharp increase in H3N2 influenza cases has been reported in India as the globe begins to recover from the devastation caused by Covid19. H3N2 is a strain of influenza, claims the WHO. a virus that primarily effects people. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that this virus was first discovered in swine there in 2010. Twelve human infections were found later in 2012, and several H3N2 epidemics followed in the same year. The virus causes a variety of lung symptoms, including a chronic cough. Infections of Covid-19 are also on the rise once more in the nation.

In addition to social isolation, face covering, and decreased contact, people all over the world have been using vitamins and minerals to strengthen their immune systems and increase their chances of fending off the Covid-19 virus. Given the present circumstances, it is imperative that this practice continue in order to strengthen the body's immunity and increase its capacity to fight off viruses.

The expanding market for dietary supplements around the globe is evidence that demand has increased ever since Covid-19 first appeared. For instance, the Indian market for dietary supplements has experienced a recent exponential growth to hit INR 436.5 billion in 2022, according to IMARC. As the market is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 13.5 per cent, it will exceed INR 958.1 billion by 2028, making India one of the world's leaders in pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. By 2025, it is expected to have reached over Rs 148 crores.

Options for immunity boosters

There are several ways to maintain a high degree of immunity. There is undoubtedly an option for everyone, including medicines, nutraceuticals, and other contemporary lines. For instance, nutraceuticals have greatly increased in acceptance and appeal in India, particularly when it comes to boosting the immune system. Nutraceuticals are a feasible line of defence against viral assaults due to the bioactive derivatives they contain from sources like phytochemicals, antioxidants, amino acids, fatty acids, and probiotics, among others.

It has been discovered that supplements with selenium, vitamins C,

D, and zinc, as well as other nutrients, are effective against COVID19. Vitamin D can improve the physical defences our bodies erect against such pathogens while also enhancing antimicrobial peptides.

The herbs, processed foods, beverages, diets, and nutrients that makeup nutraceuticals aid in enhancing immune functions and avoiding viral infections when coupled with Vitamin C's antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties and selenium's impact on the cytotoxic effector cells. Additionally, zinc supports the management of COVID19 by enhancing the immune system and possibly reducing the severity and duration of the disease.

The wide variety of D3 formulations that are offered throughout the nation and the rest of the globe is another distinctive choice. D3 is also regarded as a potent immune booster in addition to supporting healthy bones and muscular function. For the purpose of boosting the immune system, supplements and nutraceuticals made from fatty fish flesh or fish liver oils are a good choice. The good news is that they are available in a variety of formats, including powders, gummies, soft gel pills, and dissolvable tablets.

Every Indian state celebrates a variety of festivals, but you should travel to these cities if you want to participate in some of the festivals in their most genuine form. IANSlife has put together a list of renowned Indian festival locations that you shouldn't miss.

Independence Day in Wagah Border, Punjab

This festival features numerous activities where attendees can listen to dancing music and patriotic music. Standing at the Wagah border and singing the national anthem is a memorable experience.

Dusshera In Mysore

The festival of Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, is observed for one day across the rest of India, but it is observed for ten days in Mysore. Mysore celebrates Dussehra with such a great event that on the final day of the celebration, the grand throne of the court is put in Durbar Hall for public sight. Mysore Palace is also illuminated with one million light bulbs. The goddess Chamundeshwari's idol is worshipped by the Mysore royal family, and afterward, she is paraded through the streets atop an elephant. Holi is performed with flowers in Vrindavan, and you absolutely must experience this once-ina-lifetime event.

Diwali in Varanasi

Modern-day

Nutraceutical manufacturers have become more creative than ever before, owing to so many reasons. The emergence of gummies came about as a result of the need to make drug consumption easier and more convenient. The issue of medical non-conformity arising from the non-palatability of tablets and other dosage forms is now being addressed with the production of vitamins and mineral gummies. What this indicates is that anyone can take immune boosters on the move without the need for water or a break just to take a drug.

Other options like powders, liquids, and chewable have also been introduced. The point to take is that dosage must be adhered to strictly to meet up one's daily needs.

Tightening your defences against viral attacks

Pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals are not the only way to fight off viruses. Tweaking one's diet to include more vitamins and minerals is also extremely important. However, it is often hard to keep up with one's daily dietary recommendations, especially in our fast-paced "rush-hour" society. Thus, supplementation is the most convenient way to achieve a balance in our diet.

Emphasising the importance of safety, always consult a doctor before taking supplements, as this can help prevent potential side effects and ensure compatibility with one's specific health conditions.

TREATING LONG COVID WITH AYURVEDA

Even as the world gets into recovery mode post-pandemic, many people are still grappling with the symptoms of long Covid. According to the WHO, if you have recovered from Covid-19 but some symptoms stay stubborn, such as shortness of breath, brain fog, and fatigue, the condition is known as long Covid. Long Covid symptoms also include palpitations, insomnia, gastric problems such as bloating, acidity, irritable bowel, muscle weakness, and mobility issues.

Any microbe that enters the body causes toxicity, resulting in the imbalance of Doshas or bio-energies of one's body. Our bodies are prone to infectious diseases when we have a weak immune system, and Panchakarma along with other curative Ayurveda treatments helps to strengthen the immune system. In Ayurveda, the Panchakarma procedure is used as a prophylactic to prevent infectious diseases and incidentally can also help to prevent a relapse.

In the case of a Covid patient who has tested negative for the virus, the Vaidyas (doctors) at CGH Earth recommends the Panchakarma procedure to strengthen and fortify the body. However, such procedures cannot be administered soon after recovery, though other Ayurvedic treatments for insomnia, anxiety, stress-related disorders, and immune boosting can be done.

To do the Panchakarma cleansing procedures, it is recommended to allow the body to heal itself -- for up to say two months in order for the energy levels to get back to normal or near normal. This is the same recommendation that Ayurveda would give for a person who has undergone surgery or some serious illness; a gap of two or three months before undergoing the Panchakarma.

Meanwhile, the degree of long Covid symptoms varies from patient to patient and therefore the treatment protocols vary as well. The doctor will need to watch and assess when the patient is ready to undergo only one or multiple karmas which are part of the Panchakarma procedure. Long Covid patients suffer from respiratory problems and also issues related to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, cardiac-related conditions, neurological conditions, and brain and kidney issues. Covid also affects the sense organs wherein some people lose their sense

of smell, taste, hearing, and vision for an extended period of time. Many, post Covid suffer from insomnia, brain fog, and anxiety.

Although Panchakarma has immense health benefits, it is critical that for post-Covid patients the energy level is checked prior to putting them on any treatments, as they are tiring processes that do initially lower one's energy. Panchakarma procedures include detoxification of the body. This is a necessary stage of treatment as the diseasecausing microbes bring a lot of toxins into the body and if they remain in the body, Ayurvedic treatments cannot address the conditions that have manifested internally.

For Kapha-related lung infections, chest pain, and infected pleural cavities the patient is treated with Herbal drug-induced vomiting or Vamana (one of the deep cleansing Panchakarma procedures). Likewise for gastric infection or if the liver or pancreas is affected purgation is advised. Meanwhile, the main procedure for problems related to sensory organs like loss of smell or taste is Nasyai.e: nasal treatment.

For those affected by arthritis, degenerating muscles, or skin lesions; Vasti or medicated enemas are prescribed. It is to be noted that this is not merely Colon cleansing but the administration of special medicines into the colon and rectum where the medications in them are easily absorbed internally.

Alongside the Panchakarma procedures, secondary treatments or "Upakarmas" are also administered to the patients. "Tharpanam" which is administered for the eyes and "Karnapuranam" for the ears are treatments that Ayurveda prescribes for patients who have long Covid conditions related to these sensory organs. Treatments like "Njavarakizhi" and "Pizhichil" also aid in correcting the Vata, Pitta, and Kapha imbalances and help rejuvenate and rebuild the body from the inside out.

Herbal medications are administered to improve the immune system. In particular, those with respiratory tract issues benefit from these prescribed herbal medicines by improving their lung capacity and removal of excess accumulation of phlegm or fibroids.

There is no doubt that in today's world, with creative brains and technology, you can dine in or out, or even host guests at the convenience of consumers, resulting in a market swamped with new restaurants. Handin-hand, there is a huge demand for people who can write genuine reviews about these restaurants, their food, and their experience. As a result, several food bloggers who have made a reputation for themselves and have a large number of followers on social media are invited numerous times per week or sometimes multiple times per day.

But have you ever considered what overeating or an unhealthy diet plan can lead to?

Speaking on how to remain healthy while food blogging or vlogging, NeetikaLigga, a food content creator at Moj, says: "As a food enthusiast, I revel in the art of cooking and restaurant reviewing almost every week. However, indulging in outside food regularly can take a toll on one's health. While I don't follow any diet trend, I prioritize portion control both when cooking and reviewing restaurants. "Typically, when I review a restaurant or food vendor, or cook, I am in the company of friends and family, which means I am not solely responsible for consuming all the food. In the rare instance that I am alone, I request smaller portions from the restaurant or food vendor to prevent waste and overindulgence. "Additionally, I make sure to incorporate high-intensity workouts or at least go for a walk to maintain an active lifestyle. Finding the right balance is crucial for enjoying our favourite foods and indulgences while still practicing portion control and savouring every bite without any guilt. "

MehezabinDordi, Clinical Psychologist at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, recommends some additional guidelines for staying healthy when making food content on social media:

Plan your own meals in advance: Planning your meals in advance can help you make healthier choices and avoid the temptation to snack on unhealthy foods while creating content. Being mindful of your consumption: being aware of your food and being mindful is a very important component of wellness.

Try to Incorporate healthy ingredients: When creating recipes, try to incorporate healthy ingredients to have more balance in the food you eat. Practice portion control: Be mindful of portion sizes when creating and serving food content. Even the best food eaten in excess can be harmful. Avoid overeating or indulging in excess amounts of sugary or processed foods. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and keep your energy levels up. Take breaks: It's important to take regular breaks while creating content to avoid burnout and reduce stress. Use your breaks to stretch, meditate, or take a walk.

NAIL TRENDS TO CATCH YOUR EYE THIS SEASON

Nails have become a crucial part of beauty and fashion. This season calls for blossoms and pop floral colours.

"This year, neon and glittery hues have replaced traditional neutral shades. The neons aren't going anywhere, becoming a part of every beauty enthusiast. From bright neon short nails to major embellishments, 2023 manicure styles have something in store for everyone," says Utkarsha Chaudhary, Beauty, and Training expert, at Boddess Beauty.

Here are some inspirations from Boddess' manicure mood board that are growing in popularity and have caught our eye on the runways of spring/summer.

Floral Blossoms Nail Designs: Talk about summers and florals becoming a mandate. Who says short nails have to be boring?

Everyone has fallen in love with the charming, vintage-inspired floral art patterns on short nails. This floral pattern is eccentric and attractive. We love how these designs give a simplistic yet vibrant approach to your regular nails. It is proof that one can opt for dainty nail art on their natural nails without the hassle of nail extensions.

Pop Micro French Tips: A simple French manicure never fades away, so why not choose an enhanced version with a little twist? This adds an elegant ultra-thin pop colour across the tip of your nails on any size or shape of your nails. 3D Embellishments Nail Art: If you are someone who wants to stand out in the crowd then throw a party to your nails

and opt for larger-than-life 3D details. These artistic nail designs add extra drama and are seriously eye-catching. One can play around with different embellishments like gemstones or beads added to your elongated nail with the 3D effect. The patterns are cool, trendy, and creative. 'It's the futuristic trend' says the celebrity nail artists. The bigger, the better it gets.

Glazed Donut Nails: Glazed and dewy nail look is having a moment currently inspired by Hailey Bieber's ultra-trend shiny manicure. The glazed donut nails are still the talk of the town from last year and continue to hold onto this season as well. This nail pattern is all over the place striking the right code between minimalism and adding the x-factor to your nails. It's no surprise that not just celebs but beauty enthusiasts like us are drawn towards this pattern as it exudes class and subtly. Try a milky shade topped with chrome for a glazed effect. Nail jewellery and Metallic: Nail-piercing is getting huge this season. It's the blingy trend grabbing a lot of attention this season. Diamonds are a girl's best friend so why not elevate a similar look to your nails as well? This includes charms, gems, or nail piercing added to manicured nails giving dynamics to your nails. These nail trends are surely grabbing eyeballs, have been the talk of the season, and will only get bigger by the year. If you are one of those trendy nail enthusiasts, then you should give it a try. From subtle to elevated nail accessories, this would be your go-to trendsetter.

One of the most amazing and life-altering experiences a person can have is becoming a parent. Even the most seasoned travellers may be unexpectedly tested by the journey's challenges, turns, and shocks. Your world is permanently altered the minute you hold your child for the first time. Being a parent is simultaneously a blessing, a responsibility, and an emotional rollercoaster. For a child to thrive and be healthy, a mother and her child must have an emotional attachment. This connection gives the child a feeling of safety, love, and trust, which can support them as they develop and learn about the outside world.

Following are a few steps curated by Cetaphil Baby Skin Experts on how following a Tender, Love and Care routine can do wonders: Skin-to-skin time: Skin-to-skin contact consists of placing your baby, perhaps just wearing a diaper and a beanie directly on your bare chest, skin-to-skin, with a blanket, gown, or shirt wrapped over you. This physical contact promotes a sense of security and comfort to the baby and allows the mother and child to connect on a deeper level. Skin-to-skin time also helps regulate the baby's body temperature and breathing, reduces stress, and promotes relaxation. Baby massage: This can help parents understand their baby's cues and needs, as well as provide the baby with a comforting and soothing experience. Baby massage benefits the baby's skin by increasing blood circulation, encouraging better absorption of nutrients, and aiding in skin hydration. Baby massage is a gentle way for parents to connect with their newborns. Baby massage also has added benefits such as reducing crying and improving sleep quality.

Singing and talking: Singing and talking can be incredibly effective ways of bonding with your baby. Not only does it help create a strong connection between you and your little one, but it can be fun for parents as well. Your baby will recognise and find comfort in your presence. Singing and talking can help them develop their language skills, social development.

Playtime: Playtime can provide an opportunity for bonding and creating positive memories with your tiny tot. Whether it is playing with toys, singing, dancing, or simply cuddling and making funny faces; taking the time to engage with your baby is a valuable investment in their growth and overall well-being.

Bath time: Bath time with your baby is not only important for keeping them clean and healthy, but it can also be a wonderful way to bond. Warm water and a gentle touch can provide a soothing experience for your child, while also allowing you to connect with them in a relaxed and playful environment. Further, moisturising after a bath is extremely crucial for babies because it helps to replenish lost moisture and protect their delicate skin from drying out. Reading to your baby: You can entertain your baby while reading and using different voices and pointing out pictures. Reading time helps cognitive and social development, as well as strengthens the parent-child relationship. Mothers prioritize emotional bonding with their children through consistent nurturing, responsiveness, and affectionate interactions.
