ALLTHINGSFALL Ghost-busting Have you ever toured the State Capitol? Don’t yawn! Built in 1840, it’s one of the most well-preserved examples of Greek-revival style architecture in the state. If that doesn’t reel you in, consider that the tour pays homage to Halloween, exploring legends of a ghost of a Confederate soldier who roams the second floor. Did you know there were secret passageways and an escape tunnel at this historic site? We didn’t think so. www.nchistoricsites.org/capitol/STAT_ CAP/legends.htm

College Football Buckets of chicken, BBQ and beverages are all you need to cheer on your favorite team. The tailgating is half the fun, and the rivalries of college football provide conversation and good-natured ribbing through spring.

Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve Folks love to get away to the mountains for a weekend of watching the leaves turn, but if you don’t have that much time, check out Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve in Cary. Although it’s just off Kildaire Farm Road, you’ll feel like you’re in the mountains with the park’s crests and valleys, towering trees and wide swaths of water. Three miles of trails on 150 acres are well-maintained and an easy hike, even for younger kids. Trails vary in length and are well marked. Pick up a brochure at the welcome center at the trailhead. www.trailsofnc.com/hemlock_bluffs. CARYLIVING.COM | 21

Men on A

Mission

The text is simple and straightforward. It could make me spring into action, typing “yes, I want it” and then, tapping “send”. But it doesn’t. Yet I have faith that one day, the magical message meant for me will come through. Because I know I’m not dealing with amateurs. By Illyse Lane These two are experts, well trained in how to spot and then scoop up deals from stores that allow us to dress for less. While they have the low-down on nearly all the places in Western Wake that give us access to merchandise offered well below the suggested retail price, they’ve been known to wander as far west as Charlotte, as far south as Myrtle Beach and up north to southern Virginia when opportunity strikes. While they’re not opposed to picking up a name brand pair of khakis or even a waffle iron, their specialty is athletic apparel, especially soccer swag. And what may surprise you most of all is that these two are not women. MEN VS. WOMEN Meet Dan Tippette and Todd McIntosh, two men who can walk into a Ross, TJ Maxx or Marshalls and within three minutes, know whether or not they’re going to find anything worth buying. It’s this in-and-out, mission-oriented shopping strategy that makes Tippette and McIntosh prime

examples of male shoppers at their best – shoppers that enjoy the thrill of the hunt. “Shopping for me is all about targets of opportunity,” says Tippette, who first hit the discount retailers during his college years when he was working in a high-end retail shop and learned that some of the apparel he was selling could be found elsewhere for a much lower cost. For Tippette to describe the shopping experience as a chance to search for the perfect target confirms exactly what a researcher from the University of Michigan found in his 2009 study about the differences between men and women and their shopping strategies; differences that can be linked back to our ancestors, when women were the gatherers and men were the hunters. You see, men don’t hate to shop. That’s just a stereotype. Instead, it’s much more likely that they dislike being dragged along on a shopping adventure when women spend time evaluating and collecting. For men, shopping is simply about the pursuit, grabbing what they need before it escapes.
