T

here’s a welcome shift that happens across Western Wake as September rolls in. The frenetic energy of summer gives way to the comforting rhythm of fall. It’s a season defined by familiar sounds and feelings—the cheer of the crowd under Friday night lights, the scent of kettle corn at a local festival, and that first crisp morning that has us all reaching for a cozy sweater. It’s a time when our community truly comes alive.

This issue is a celebration of that spirit, filled with stories of local heroes, community adventures, and the simple pleasures of autumn.

We are honored to feature two remarkable figures from the world of sports. On a tour of the Carolina Hurricanes' locker room, in front of my favorite player's "Staal."

First, we get a rare, private conversation with the leader of a team that unites the entire Triangle: Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour, who offers his perspective on the upcoming season and the passion of the Caniacs. Then, we sit down with local baseball pro Tim Federowicz, a hometown hero who shares his journey from player to manager, inspiring new athletes in the game.

As the leaves begin to turn, we’re embracing the season of adventure, both near and far. For those seeking a spooky thrill, we offer a guide to the delightfully frightful Spookywoods. This guide serves as an introduction to some of the top medical professionals in our area, who are dedicated to caring for our community.

Rod Brind’Amour has been the face of the Carolina Hurricanes for 25 seasons.

Before he’s finished, he wants to bring the Stanley Cup back.

C

arolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour spends most of his days living in the moment. For the past 37 years, his life has revolved around the National Hockey League’s schedule, where it takes 82 games across 6 months just to reach the playoffs.

So it may come as a surprise that he has given some thought to a couple of upcoming milestones— ones that have defined not only his career, but also the arc of sports history in North Carolina.

Brind’Amour arrived in Raleigh in January of 2000, a veteran forward traded from the Philadelphia Flyers. The Hurricanes were playing their first season in Raleigh following two uninspiring years in Greensboro—their temporary home after relocating from Hartford, Connecticut.

“I knew as little about North Carolina as probably anyone,” Brind’Amour says. “I knew of Michael Jordan as a kid. I got a little glimpse of it when N.C. State won under Jimmy V. There’s no way I would have thought I would make this my home for 25 years.”

But it’s a different hockey anniversary that has left a more indelible impact. The upcoming NHL season marks the 20th

anniversary of Carolina’s Stanley Cup championship in 2006.

Brind’Amour was named team captain before the season started, and what followed took the hockey world—and the Triangle—by surprise. The 35-year-old forward led the Hurricanes on a 2-month march through the playoffs that culminated in a Game 7 win against the Edmonton Oilers in the final.

As the team’s leader, Brind’Amour secured his place in team history and put his stamp on the playoff run with a team-best 12 goals.

Brind’Amour retired after the 2009–10 season, but he has remained a Hurricane ever since. He served seven seasons as an assistant coach during a 9-year playoff drought.

But upon being named head coach before the 2018–19 season, he embarked on another journey of lifting the Hurricanes to the heights of the NHL. He has led the team to playoffs—and won a round in the postseason—in each of his 7 years behind the bench. Last season, he earned his 300th win faster than any coach in NHL history.

thought I’d get to play with him and room with him. And now, I don’t call him a friend, but he texts me. You don’t know who the next guy you’re going to come across is. That’s what’s great about our life, because there is a lot of change. You don’t know who’s going to be impactful in your life.

That’s what hockey does for you.

Was it difficult to retire?

The road to 25 years in Raleigh has been marked with challenges, too. Brind’Amour retired as a player in 2010 when the Hurricanes bought out the final year of his contract. And while his playing career suggests he is worthy of enshrinement in the Hall of Fame, he has never been selected—for reasons beyond his control.

Heading into his 8th season, his unparalleled success as a coach— the team has reached the Eastern Conference Final in two of the past three seasons—has only raised expectations for the Hurricanes.

Over the summer, the 55-year-old took time to discuss his quarter century with the Hurricanes. Sitting in the coaches’ offices at Invisalign Arena, he spoke candidly about the highs and lows, the Hurricanes’ resurgence, and the expectations of winning another Cup.

MIDTOWN: It’s not very often that someone spends such a long time connected to one franchise.

This has become an entire era of your life—25 years. That’s a big chunk of your life.

The first thing I always think about, honestly, is how fast things go. It’s almost sad for me. Life’s going. It’s happening for everybody, and it’s ticking on. I just want to enjoy every day. You’re at a different stage of your life. It goes by so fast.

And I guess one of the takeaways is that you never could have seen it coming, right?

No chance—that’s what life is about.

You just never know how things are going to go. That’s what I’ve taken out of that. Even players I’ve come across over the years. I grew up idolizing certain players, like Wayne Gretzky. I got to play with him in the [1998 Winter] Olympics. I never

For me, the end was real tough because the last year was brutal. And yet I still felt like I had a lot left. I was 39 going on 40. My conditioning was great. For me, getting cut down to [playing] basically 6 minutes a night, that’s what did it.

Then I couldn’t get out of my own way, playing 6 minutes and trying to produce like I was getting 20 minutes. Now I am playing poorly, but it’s because I’ve got to score on this shift or I’m not getting another one. That’s what happened at my end.

They didn’t offer me a chance to come back. At that point I had to decide: Okay, go play somewhere else or be done with it? There’s no way I was going to leave my kids to play. I know it wouldn’t have worked. So it was an easy decision in that regard. I had a good perspective on it, I think.

You were an assistant coach for the last 7 years of a 9-year playoff drought for this franchise. When you took over as head coach, what made you think you could turn this team into a winner so fast?

For that 7-year period, having three different coaches [Paul Maurice, Kirk Muller, and Bill Peters], that was

probably the best thing that could have happened because I got an education three different ways. All of them were different. I had ideas in my head that I thought would be better. I was like, I think we’re missing the boat here. There’s something that none of these guys are doing.

[Video coach] Chris Huffine and I sat there in the summer putting video together. I remember thinking, we’re changing how the game is played. We’re going to be so much more aggressive than anyone has ever really done. We were going to put a real “pressure” game together and see what happens.

That’s the way I would want to play.

And if you’re not as talented as the other teams, it’s a way to kind of close the gap. And we weren’t, if we’re honest. We weren’t as talented.

I had no idea if it was going to work, but I felt like we had great people in this locker room. There were some good, young kids and a leadership group. I don’t want to say there were mess-ups [previously] in how we handled that, but there clearly were. I thought, I don’t have to do anything. This should get us a little better. And it just worked out.

There’s a line between players and coaches. As a coach, having a relationship with players is important, but it’s not the same as interacting as a teammate. What is it like trying to straddle that line as a coach?

I just had this conversation with my wife because we’re going to [Jalen] Chatfield’s wedding. I was joking that I’ve got to get out of there by

”As a player, you only worry about your mistakes. As the coach, everybody’s mistakes are your mistakes.

That’s where the stress comes in. I’ve got to do a better job of letting it go, but it’s hard to do because you know it all matters.”

your mistakes. That’s where the stress comes in. I’ve got to do a better job of letting it go, but it’s hard to do because you know it all matters. I don’t think I ever will, which is the nature of it. But that’s part of the gig.

During the summer, the Hurricanes signed the top forward on the free agent market, Nikolaj Ehlers, from the Winnipeg Jets. And the team traded for a quality defenseman in K’Andre Miller from the New York Rangers. These are impact players that can help you win.

10 o’clock because the guys want to have fun. I’ve kind of passed that now, because the guys know they can have fun around me.

I do think that once you get to know guys as long as I have in here, it changes a little bit. We do have a coach-player relationship, but I think it’s more out of respect for the positions. That’s what makes it special for me. For a lot of the guys I have, it’s more than that. We have genuine friendships. There is a line, and I know there is—but there really isn’t.

What is a night like for you after a loss?

The losses blow. It’s probably what wears me out the most; you never get back to level. And the wins don’t do anything for you, and that’s the problem. They don’t even out.

And that’s a good thing, because of what the expectations are. We’re supposed to win every night, which is tough to do. As a player, you only worry about your mistakes. As the coach, everybody’s mistakes are

That’s what I like about where we’re at as an organization. If there’s something out there that can make us better, we’re going to try to figure out how to get it.

Ehlers is a piece of that. Can he play with some of our top guys and make them better? For me, it’s talent, and that’s what Ehlers has.

Whatever we think the potential is with [Miller], we’ve got to get it out of him. We know from watching that he’s big, he’s strong, he can skate. He’s got a great shot, and all the instincts are there.

You’re hopeful it makes you better.

The additions were the best we could do. It’s already a great group that we have. The group does a great job of bringing in the new people and making them feel at home so that they can play their best.

This season will be the 20th anniversary of winning the Stanley Cup. Do you find yourself reflecting on it very often?

Yeah, I love thinking back on it. I just love the relationships we forged in that time, literally forever

friendships. I could not have talked to some guys in 10 years, but there’s this special bond you have. It goes so much deeper than winning a Cup. I don’t know how to explain it, really.

So, 20 years? The biggest thing is just time, the value of it. Take advantage of every day. That’s what we preach here. Don’t look ahead. Try to enjoy this game. Give it your best, because you don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring. We can’t control anything down the line. Time is the biggest thing. We’re running out of it.

You’ve won the Stanley Cup as a player. What would it mean to you to win it again as a coach?

I’ve done it, and I’d love to do it 100 times. It’s not something that gets old. But it’s so special of a thing that you want people close to you— the people who have sacrificed—you want them to experience it. That means everyone, from the organization down to the fans. You really want it for them because it is so special. And I know that now by doing it.

For me to be the coach of it? Whatever. That’s kind of the sidebar of it.

To see people, the way they think and feel about themselves when they can actually say they’ve won. To me it’s so silly that you have to win it to be a winner, but just think about what has happened to our team over 7 years: if we had won one time in 7 years and been [lousy] the rest, everyone would think of us differently. But we’re knocking on the doorstep. It would change perception and everything, and that would be huge.

WORKING BACK TO THE BIG LEAGUES Former Apex, UNC catcher Federowicz nearing return to majors as a manager STORY BY KURT DUSTERBERG

im Federowicz is working on his second career.

For 13 seasons, he climbed the professional baseball ladder, often shuttling back and forth between Class AAA—the highest level of the minor leagues—and the major leagues. As a catcher with a strong bat, he found his way onto the big league rosters of six different teams from 2011 to 2019.

Now, at age 38, he is working his way to the top again—this time as a minor league manager. Federowicz manages the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. It is his third straight season as a minor league skipper, all at the Triple-A level. After 10 seasons playing at this level, he knows exactly what his players are going through—and they know their manager has done it all before.

“They’re aware of my career,” he says. “I’ve done the grind that they’re working on now. I was the big prospect coming up that had to prove himself at Triple-A to get a call-up. I was also that guy getting sent down who had to prove himself to get called back up. And then I was the old veteran guy who was the stop gap, trying to get through the rest of his career. That helps a lot. I think guys truly listen when I talk to them. I feel like I can add a lot of value to these guys’ careers.”

The road to Major League Baseball began at Apex High School.

Federowicz also played basketball as a senior to stay in shape, but “I was pretty locked in to baseball once I realized I was pretty good and I kind of had a future,” he says. “My junior and senior year of high school, I started to have a couple scouts follow me around and talk to me and my parents. I used to pitch and catch back then.”

After high school, he committed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he quickly became a fixture in the Tar Heels’ lineup.

“I don’t think I played the first two games, but I started the third game on a Sunday,” he says. “I think that’s when it really took off for me.

Agents started to reach out to me.

There were more and more pro scouts at my games.”

Following his junior season, Federowicz was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the seventh round of the 2008 MLB draft. He turned pro that summer and moved through the minor league ranks until he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2011, making his major league debut that season.

Soon, he was learning the realities of life in professional baseball.

“I always felt like I just needed that opportunity to be the backup

[in the majors],” Federowicz says.

“I had a couple years where I thought I was getting close, but I just never really stuck.”

In 2013, he made the Dodgers’ opening day roster, but Los Angeles immediately traded him for veteran catcher Ramón Hernández. “It pushed me off the roster without ever playing a game,” he says. “So I was pretty frustrated.”

As quickly as the situation soured in Los Angeles, things turned back in Federowicz’s favor. He hit a red-hot .418 at Triple-A Albuquerque, and Hernandez was released in June.

Federowicz finally earned a major league backup job, but even then, there was more to prove.

“I felt like I was playing pretty well,” he says. “I hit .231 that season.

I felt like, as a backup catcher, that was enough. Then I quickly realized on a team like the Dodgers, you’re

expected to win. It’s hard to keep those opportunities. You’ve got to keep putting up numbers. That’s where I think it just fell apart. I just wasn’t consistent enough.”

Federowicz shuttled between the majors and minors long enough to earn additional stints with the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, Cincinnati Reds, and Texas Rangers. But the long stretches in Triple-A prepared him to relate to players who are experiencing the same concerns he faced just a few years ago.

“It’s managing personalities, managing frustrations,” he says. “I think there’s a lot of frustration at this level, whether a young prospect comes up and he’s struggling and doesn’t know if he’s ever going to make it—or if he even belongs.

to a regular big leaguer, so we try to help them figure that out. There’s always something that’s going to help you take that step further, and we’re here to help you find it.”

It takes a special touch to manage at the top level of the minors. Wins and losses aren’t as important as making sure players are ready for a call-up. At Norfolk, it’s Federowicz’s job to make sure his players are ready to go to the majors on a moment’s notice.

“At this level, it’s hard not to be selfish about your [statistics] and protect yourself from injury,” he says. “I get it when I see guys taking it easy or not being as aggressive in certain situations. But it’s hard to flip that switch when you go up. You almost have to stay in the win-at-allcosts mentality.”

Just as his players are hoping to get the call to the major leagues, so is Federowicz. “That’s my goal. I would love to be a major league manager. I have a passion for managing, and I love the game. I feel like my career set me up for it.”

His career also helped him earn the respect of his players. He once noticed his players checking out former New York Yankees closer and two-time all-star Clay Holmes on the clubhouse TV. Federowicz told them he once launched a home run off Holmes into the second deck in Cincinnati while playing for the Reds. “I always tell the guys, ‘He’s in the books!’ They’re like, ‘No way!’”

While he pursues his second act in the game, Federowicz is in a good place. His family—wife Megan and two daughters, ages five and nine—

calls Chapel Hill home. “They come up [to Norfolk] sometimes on the weekends,” he says. “We also play in Durham and Charlotte. After a Sunday day game, I can sneak home for the off day, depending on the travel the next day. When you come home, they’re excited and when you leave, they’re sad.”

Federowicz knows all about emotional ups and downs. But the ones he learned in baseball are now his teaching tools—and maybe his ticket to manage in the majors.

“I think these last three years have been very beneficial at the highest level below the big leagues. I hope it happens one day. That would be pretty cool.”

n 1984, movie fans met a man with knives for hands and seemingly cute creatures that turned nasty in a hurry. The next year, Tony Wohlgemuth answered a teenage dare and turned a simple idea into a backyard nightmare that developed into the Spookywoods it is known as today.

“At just 15 years old, I took a leap of faith, turning a simple idea into a backyard haunted trail,” says Wohlgemuth. “What started with a chainsaw, a fog machine, and a group of neighborhood friends grew into one of America’s top haunted attractions. The inspiration was rooted in pure passion for Halloween, creativity, and a love for bringing people together for an unforgettable scare.”

Over four decades, Wohlgemuth has continued to reinvent new attractions. He is currently building an additional feature for this year’s festivities. “Every year we tear down, rebuild, and push the envelope in technology, storytelling, and guest experience.”

At a sprawling 92-acre family farm, Kersey Valley Attractions offers year-round entertainment, including zip lines, axe throwing, bomb bowling, laser tag, and escape rooms.

In addition to her inhouse creations, we also collaborate with top-tier fabricators to develop custom made, one-of-a-kind costumes and props that elevate the guest experience even further.”

WELCOME TO YOUR NIGHTMARES Many Midway characters have become the heartbeat of Spookywoods. Each character is a living work of art—visually unforgettable and iconic—through Olivia’s designs. “They roam freely, interacting with guests before and after the haunt, making memories long before the fog even rolls in.

These characters aren’t just actors—they’re storytellers, comedians, creeps, and crowd energizers. From bone-chilling clowns to mesmerizing stilt-walkers, they blur the line between the audience and show, setting the tone from the moment guests enter the gates.”

Every step guests take when entering the Midway is designed to send a few shivers down their spines.

Club Spooky’s live DJ gets everyone in the proper mood. Visitors hungry enough to munch on an arm can find tantalizing treats and devilish brews, including coffees and cocktails, at Endora’s Brew.

Guests can jump on board a dark tram ride and travel into the shadows before disembarking at Icons, where horror themes come to life. The final haunted complex is within an ominous pine forest.

There is also the “No Vacancy Motel”—one of Wohlgemuth’s personal favorites—where visitors enter a hotel not unlike the one in which Norman Bates is the caretaker … and stumble upon an active murder scene.

And there’s more than just Spookywoods; the Kersey Valley property is packed with year‑round adventures.

W

hen the air turns crisp and the leaves begin their slow, colorful descent, the call of the Blue Ridge Mountains becomes impossible to resist. Each year, North Carolinians flock to the western part of the state, eager to embrace the chill, the views, and the charm of small-town retreats. Whether it’s a weekend of hiking boots, ski gear, or simply sipping mulled wine by a fire, Blowing Rock is the perfect base camp to explore western North Carolina during fall and winter.

Blowing Rock, a town that feels custom built for the colder months, is steeped in Native American folklore and renowned for its namesake attraction—the Blowing Rock itself. With a unique wind current that sends snowflakes and leaves soaring upward, it’s no surprise that this picturesque destination has enchanted travelers since it was incorporated in 1889.

For over a decade, I’ve made the trek from Raleigh to Blowing Rock for everything from hiking in the crisp mountain air to enjoying the warmth of local drinks and the festive atmosphere of WinterFest.

In total, these sister properties offer 118 rooms and cabins, giving the group the flexibility to host everything from intimate weekends to large events for up to 250 guests. “We do weddings, family reunions, car clubs, business retreats—you name it,” says Williams.

An on-site apiary producing small-batch honey, so guests can take home a sweet memento of their stay. “It’s a unique touch,” Williams notes, “and something people love to take home as a little piece of Blowing Rock.”

Inside, you’ll find a welcoming lobby where guests can purchase wine or beer to enjoy on the terrace.

While the bar is now open primarily for special events— such as murder mystery weekends and conferences—it remains a beautiful gathering space when in use.

HISTORY MEETS LUXURY AT BLOWING ROCK High above the town of Blowing Rock at 3,832 feet, Westglow Luxury Resort & Spa blends mountain luxury with rich history. Built in 1917 as the summer home of landscape painter Elliott Daingerfield, the property still showcases his legacy. “Our main dining room is probably most notable—it’s filled with original Elliott Daingerfield artwork,” says dining manager Megan Blackburn. “This was his summer home. He had his wedding here, and raised a family here in the summers.”

Guests can stay in one of six refined rooms in the main house, the secluded lodge suites, or the spacious Daingerfield House, which sleeps up to 12. Some rooms capture the sunrise, others the sunset over Grandfather and Sugar Mountains.

Mornings begin with chef-prepared breakfasts— think frittatas and fresh specialties. The Life Enrichment Center offers massages, facials, manicures, hair services,

and Pilates classes, with day passes available for those who need to take a break from shopping the main streets.

Beyond the spa, the croquet lawn hosts yoga, sip-and-paint nights, and summer cocktails. From the observation deck, panoramic views stretch for miles— sometimes, on a clear day, all the way to Charlotte.

“It’s a place where history meets luxury,” says Blackburn. “People come for the views and the spa, but they leave with a real connection to the story behind this house.”

THE NEWEST SPARK IN BLOWING ROCK Perched near the corner of Highway 221 and Main Street, The Embers Hotel opened its doors in 2024 as Blowing Rock’s newest boutique retreat. n late April, 28 mostly amateur hikers—including 14 women— embarked on the trek of a lifetime to Everest Base Camp (EBC) under the banner of the Carolina Yak Pack.

Standing at 5,364 meters, many collapsed in tears upon arrival, overcome by the sheer enormity of their achievement. But behind each pair of boots on the trail lay a personal story of grit, faith, and sometimes sheer chutzpah.

by Morrisville-based IT consultant Prakash Punj. For some, like chemical engineer Alka Sinha, the invitation struck a deep chord. After 22 years in Michigan, her move to North Carolina in 2022 had already set her on a new path. She saw the trek as a spiritual test. “My head felt cold and I felt

giddy,” Sinha recalls of her struggle climbing Gokyo Ri, a steep peak hikers ascend to acclimatize. “I passed out for five to six minutes and when I came to, I said, ‘Hey, I was sitting on a rock.’

My guide gently corrected me, ‘You fell.’” Even so, she continued on.

The team quickly bonded over their physical and emotional challenges. Raleigh-based paralegal and mother of two Anusuya Agarwal wasn’t sure what she was signing up for. “[Everest] was never on my bucket list,” she says. But after being laid off in January, she seized the moment.

The trek’s highest point, the Cho La pass, proved to be her crucible. “It had snowed the night before. When I crossed, I was sobbing … I couldn’t believe what I had achieved.”

For some, the journey began with a calling. Shelly Arora, a Canada-

based order management specialist originally from Faridabad, India, had recently lost her mother. When her husband spotted a social media post about the trek, she took it as a sign.

“The hike started on April 20—my 50th birthday,” she says. When the cost gave her pause, her son stepped in and offered to help fund the trip.

ahead. “I persevered,” she says. “I was even ahead of a few of the others.”

That determination was echoed by others on the trail. “It is always the mind telling the body something can’t be done,” says Monika Gupta, a finance professional turned stay-at-home mom who’d never traveled solo. Despite a “sheltered life,” she found inner strength she didn’t know she had.

Vani Sistla, a Duke University Hospital employee who’d never hiked before January, echoed that sentiment. Raised in Mumbai, she credits prayer—and her Bollywood playlist—for carrying her through the climb. “There were many times I thought of withdrawing. But my dad pushed me,” she says. “I feel like the mountains have given me a little of themselves. I feel so much more alive.

I feel unstoppable.”

While each woman had her own reason for joining, the trek created a sense of shared purpose. When Sinha fainted, it shook the group. “I was 80% of the way up to Gokyo Ri when I felt I wanted to go back,” says web designer and educationist Gurleen Bajaj. “I was in tears and wondered what I had signed up for.” But reaching base camp offered what she called a “nextlevel” sense of achievement—and an unexpected social media detox.

For some, the trek wasn’t just about personal milestones—it was a catalyst for family change. Monica Anand, a Duke University researcher, signed up in part to help improve her husband’s health. “Mukesh was not active, and his health was deteriorating,” she explains. They trained together, but after injuring his knee, he was advised not to go. Monica nearly canceled, but when family and staff stepped in to help at home and their restaurant, Nukkad, she pushed forward. “I did the hike for Mukki,” she says. “Now our fitness journey is off to a jump start.”

Rashmi Batra, an IT program manager and mother from the “Sports City of India,” Meerut, saw the trek as a long-held dream and a fitness goal.

“Going to Everest was always a dream,” she says. But after falling ill with gastrointestinal issues on day one, she relied on sheer willpower to continue.

At the heart of the group was Anita Punj, a Duke Health strategic services associate. Raised in Dharamshala, a Himalayan town where walking mountain paths was part of daily life, she felt uniquely at home in the terrain. The idea for the hike came during a Grand Canyon trip with her husband, Prakash. “We just manifested our intentions,” she says. “There’s something about the mountains that heals you.” She credits her incident-free journey to years of yoga, meditation, and the energy of the group.

While the hikers carried emotional weight with them up the mountain, they also brought gifts.

Before leaving, the Carolina Yak Pack raised close to $4,000 to support a local school in Nepal’s Solukhumbu region, funding a new playground.

They donated laptops, shoes, and musical instruments. And moved by the aspirations of their young porters and guides, they shared their stories on Facebook and launched a GoFundMe campaign that raised $3,300 in a week.

The physical achievement was undeniable. But when asked what they took home from the trek, the answer was unanimous: gratitude.

Gratitude for health, for resilience, for community—and for the mountains that showed them what they were made of.

Where Coffee Meets Culture The Turkish Coffee Ladies of Apex

t was a warm Friday afternoon when I stopped by the Turkish Coffee Lady in Apex for my interview. Inside the small café, people came and went at a steady pace—two friends catching up over coffee in one corner, someone working quietly on a laptop in another. The smell of freshly brewed Turkish coffee filled the air.

Owners Nuriye Taskin and Elif Dilekoglu greeted every guest with genuine warmth and hospitality. They took time to explain the menu, invite people to smell the different blends, and help first-timers pick the right cup. Watching them chat and laugh with their customers, it was clear this café is about more than just coffee—it’s about making people feel at home.

When we sat down to talk, they shared how their friendship, which started in the world of real estate, led them here. “She was my customer,” Dilekoglu laughed. “I’m a real estate agent—that’s how we met. And then we became really close friends.” Their easy laughter and shared vision laid the groundwork for something bigger than just a new business.

But this café in Apex is also part of a story that started long before these two friends ever poured their first cup together. To understand that piece, I reached out to Gizem Salcigil White, the founder behind the Turkish Coffee Lady brand, who generously shared her story by email.

White, a cultural entrepreneur and self-described gastrodiplomat, believes Turkish coffee is more than just a drink. “With a 500-year-old history, Turkish coffee is the world’s first coffee brewing technique. It is a centuries-old ritual of hospitality, storytelling, and connection,” she explains. When White moved to the U.S. in 2005, she was surprised by how few people were familiar with this piece of Turkish heritage.

Determined to change that, she launched the traveling Turkish Coffee Truck, which traveled across the U.S., Europe, and Canada, pouring cups and sharing stories along the way.

In 2017, White opened her first brick-and-mortar café in Alexandria, Virginia, only to lose it temporarily during the pandemic. In true

entrepreneurial spirit, White reopened in 2022 and soon set her sights on sharing this cultural experience beyond Virginia’s borders.

A chance meeting during a documentary screening in North Carolina brought White together with Taskin and Dilekoglu, whose shared passion for community and culture perfectly aligned with her mission. White describes Apex as “a vibrant, welcoming town that truly reflects what Turkish Coffee Lady stands for—community, warmth, and curiosity for culture.” Inspired by their dedication, she knew Apex was the ideal location for the first Turkish Coffee Lady café in North Carolina—and Taskin and Dilekoglu were the perfect duo to bring it to life.

In September of 2024, the Turkish Coffee Lady café officially opened its doors in Apex and has quickly become a place where coffee, conversation, and giving back blend together seamlessly. For Taskin, the café holds a deeply personal significance. “My idea was to earn the money with the coffee shop and then give it to the ones who are in need,” she said. That mission became even more important after a devastating earthquake struck Turkey. “I was in Turkey and saw people who needed a lot. Even one penny—they need everything.”

Dilekoglu didn’t hesitate to stand beside her friend. “It touched my heart, and I’m like, you know what? I’m in for it.” Together, they built a café that feels like a warm hug—a place where culture and compassion are served alongside every cup.

Authenticity shows up in the smallest details.

The café’s signature Turkish coffee is served in beautiful handmade ceramics shipped from Cappadocia, a region in Turkey known for its centuries-old pottery traditions. The artists behind these pieces visit twice a year to share new work and strengthen the café’s connection to their homeland. Many of these unique ceramics line the café’s shelves and are available for purchase— a small way for guests to take a bit of Turkey home with them. One artist even gifted the café a special piece painted using actual coffee grounds a reminder of how deeply this place honors tradition.

fresh pastries, or simit—a chewy, sesame-sprinkled Turkish bagel. Pistachio-rich baklava is a musttry, with nuts sourced from Virginia to closely match those of Dilekoglu’s hometown, Gaziantep.

Many of the sweet treats come from a local female entrepreneur near Raleigh, who supplies homemade cakes, including gluten-free and eggless options. This blend of Turkish tradition and local collaboration reflects the café’s true spirit.

Of course, the coffee itself is the heart of it all.

Guests can choose from unique blends, such as the Milky Zeugma—made from roasted pistachio tree seeds for a gentle, nutty flavor—or the Silky Mardin, inspired by the ancient city of Mardin, which layers pistachio, caramel, chocolate, almond, and cardamom into one smooth cup. For something classic, there’s Bold Istanbul, brewed strong and unfiltered, the way it’s been done for centuries.

But Turkish coffee isn’t just a drink—it’s a ritual. Finely ground beans are gently boiled with cold water to create a rich, unfiltered brew, usually served without milk and paired with sweet Turkish Delight candies to balance the bold taste.

When the last sip is gone, the real fun begins: “It’s part of our culture,” Dilekoglu told me. “You swirl the cup, turn it upside down, and when it’s cold, you open it and see what’s inside.” Guests can even join workshops to learn how to brew coffee the traditional way—whether over hot sand, on a stovetop, or in a modern pot—and try their hand at the playful custom of reading coffee grounds. It’s not serious fortune-telling, but a lighthearted way to spark conversation and connection.

Since opening, the café has built a loyal following. And the dream is still growing. Taskin and Dilekoglu hope to host more cultural events, coffee workshops, and Turkish music nights— sharing their heritage and hospitality with even more people. White summed it up best: “Whether it’s their first visit or they’ve been many times, I want everyone to feel seen, inspired, and nourished.”

In Apex, every cup poured at the Turkish Coffee Lady is more than coffee—it’s an invitation to slow down, share stories, and carry forward a centuries-old tradition that still feels right at home.

ven in the age where social media is quick to unearth every hidden culinary gem, there are still instances of delectable delights that have primarily been passed along through word-of-mouth. These food stories of local lore persist by hiding in unexpected settings, undetected by the typical inquisitive eaters.

FRIED BOLOGNA SANDWICH AT THE WAKE COUNTY SPEEDWAY Years ago, a coworker of mine brought to my attention the legend of the fried bologna sandwich at the Wake County Speedway. Through his thick, distinctly Carolina drawl he recounted an evening of high-speed automobiles and exhaust, ending his account with “and they have

a really good fried bologna sandwich that people love.”

Wake County Speedway’s bologna sandwich can be traced as far back as the track’s inception and the first lady of the track, Jean Simpkins. The wife of Glenn Simpkins, the speedway’s founder, she worked the concessions at the racetrack at the time. Although the stand served the typical concession fare like hot dogs

and hamburgers, the racers brought their love for a fried bologna sandwich with them from their home of Wilson County.

To satisfy their cravings, Simpkins would lug her mother-in-law’s meat slicer to the track every day to carve up perfect slices of bologna.

Two years ago, the legacy continued with Luis and Leslie Delacruz of The Raccoon Grill. The sandwich’s reputation was unbeknown to them, but they put it on their menu at the request of the speedway’s owner. Lesile admits there are no hidden ingredients or trade secrets to The Raccoon Grill’s

rendition of the beloved sandwich, and truth be told, it’s better that way. It’s a straightforward, unapologetic slab of charred lunch meat. A cheese sauce, chili, and onions complete the lusty sandwich.

An evening full of warm summer heat with the breeze from the speeding automobiles, made complete by thick slices of lunch meats.

GAS STATION SUSHI Ask around Apex for the best sushi in town and there’s a good chance you’ll be directed toward a gas station. This isn’t a bad joke, prank, or poor taste—it’s the work of Bird Owattragool’s Akami Sushi Bar. Tucked into the corner of a gas station, Akami transports you away from the rows of a gas station convenience store’s soft drinks and candy to a sleek, refined sushi restaurant.

Built on top of what was once a Subway restaurant, Owattragool would pass by the space every day on his way to his former head chef position in Holly Springs. What

may have been an inauspicious space for some, Owattragool could immediately imagine operating a sushi place in the space.

Opened in 2019, Akami has built a reputation among the locals for its outstanding sushi in its peculiar setting.

This exceptionalism isn’t a trick of contrast or a product of low expectations.

Rather, Akami’s offerings stand alone in their quality and excellence. “My style is simple. My kind of sushi is old-fashioned,” remarks Owattragool.

Despite Akami’s growing local reputation, Owattragool notices that diners are still hesitant to get their raw fish fix at a gas station, “About 80% of people are still afraid to try it because they think of something like supermarket sushi.” However, Owattragool sees a change in the diner once they get over their anxiety and have a taste of what Akami has to offer. “Once they try, they come back.”

TEA TIME AT THE MARKET In search of hidden gems, a social media follower tipped me off to the superb chai and chaat service at Morrisville’s Sangam Mart. “When the weather is nice, it’s hard to find parking,” they said.

You may not immediately notice Sangam Mart, tucked away on Morrisville’s Chapel Hill Road, but if you find crowds gathering among the road’s industrial businesses and corporate offices, you’ve stumbled upon it. Since 2006, the humble market has served Morrisville as a vibrant community hub and convenient destination for native ingredients for homesick expats. “We are not a business.

We solved a problem,” insists managing partner Radhesh Reddy Gurrala, stressing how Sangam Mart serves needs much greater than just groceries and food—it

has become a community gathering place.

“There are about 15 to 20 meetup groups that meet here,” says Gurrala. “You’ll see people celebrating birthdays outside, cutting cake,” adds founder and managing partner Melpakkam Sundar.

Sangam Mart’s rendition of a cultural cornerstone, chai tea, serves as an invitation to the space as well as the center of its community experience. “The tea is the source [of community],” reflects Gurrala. The robust and flavorful brew is crafted by an Indian tea master. “It’s the same recipe he had from India,” Sundar says. “He brews the tea with real masala.”

This attention to detail is also reflected in their evening chaat—an Indian snack featuring regional Indian treats that eager patrons are willing to travel for hours to taste.

very fall, a quiet kind of magic rolls into the Triangle’s farmland—rows of rustling corn, tractor engines humming to life, and families spilling into pumpkin fields with boots and an apple cider in hand. But behind the hayrides and corn mazes are local families who’ve worked the same soil for generations, neighbors who turned their land into gathering places, and simple traditions that keep people coming back year after year.

Naylor Family Farm (Fuquay-Varina) A Fall Playground Built by Hand and Heart For more than 40 years, the Naylor family has grown vegetables and raised animals just outside Fuquay-Varina, selling their harvest at Raleigh’s State Farmers Market and forging close ties with their community. But each fall, their quiet working farm transforms into something extraordinary: a sprawling, hands-on wonderland packed with home-built attractions, family tradition, and a hearty dose of imagination.

The farm boasts a 7-acre corn maze, “Super Mega Ride-n-Slide,” giant tube tunnels, and more, but it’s the Fall Hayride Adventure that truly sets Naylor apart. Guests climb aboard a tractor-pulled wagon that winds through spooky woods filled with elaborate scenes, live actors, and hand-built sets. “My father’s done carpentry his whole life,” says Morgan Naylor.

“He used to finish furniture. Now he builds for the farm.”

“The hayride is a very unique and interactive experience,” he adds. “It’s easily our most loved attraction.”

From the hayride to prize pumpkins and play zones that span generations of creativity, Naylor Family Farm blends old-fashioned produce farming with one of the most memorable fall outings in the region.

Phillips Farms (Cary) A Century-Old Farm Reimagined for Fall Fun For over 100 years, Phillips Farms has been part of Cary’s landscape, rooted in family and agriculture. Lee Phillips purchased the land from his grandfather’s estate in 1976, but it was his son, Michael, who brought new life to the farm in 2008 when he left college to follow an unexpected dream: turning the family land into a seasonal park where Triangle families could spend meaningful time outdoors.

Throughout the season, visitors can choose from thousands of pumpkins, browse vibrant mums and fresh apples, and—of course—explore the Family Fun Park, which is outfitted with rides and activities for the whole family. “This year, we’ll have fresh hot mini doughnuts and fall-themed portrait areas,” says Michael. “Each weekend throughout the season, we love to have a themed weekend—like our Pumpkin Fest, or Halloween events with five haunted houses. That can get pretty intense,” he adds with a laugh.

(The haunted houses are recommended for ages 12 and up.)

Other themed weekends include Grandparents Weekend—where grandparents enter free with the purchase of a general admission ticket—Sunflower Weekend, Apple Weekend, and more. Visit their website for dates and more information.

Page Farms (West Raleigh) A Front Porch Welcome, Four Generations Deep Tucked just outside Raleigh’s city limits, Page Farms has been in the same family for over a century—four generations working the same hundred acres since 1922. Fall at Page Farms is one of the most anticipated times of year.

“Our hayride takes you through the cow pastures, so you have a good chance of seeing animals,” says Justin Page. “It drops families right off at our pumpkin patch, where they can pick their pumpkin right off the vine.”

In addition to the pumpkin patch, guests can enjoy a corn maze, a hay maze for little ones, slides, swings, duck races, and plenty of wide-open space for kids to explore.

the farm has built a loyal following, with many customers claiming that its corn and tomatoes rival their own home gardens.

Come fall, Porter shifts focus to what they do best: pumpkins. “Our pumpkins have won ribbons at the [North Carolina] State Fair,” says nursery manager Gylian Morris. “And we have a huge variety.” At the nursery, visitors will find the largest selection of pumpkins and ornamental gourds in Raleigh.

Alongside the pumpkins, the farm offers colorful mums, dried corn stalks, ornamental gourds, and fall décor—all grown or sourced with care. There’s even a small photo stop for families looking to mark the season.

Farmers Fall Festival (Downtown Cary) A Street Party With Front Porch Spirit Each September, the heart of Cary comes alive with one of the most anticipated days of the season—the Farmers Fall Festival, a vibrant celebration of local food, art, music, and community. What began as a weekly farmers market with a loyal following transforms for one Saturday into a sprawling, 100+ vendor

street fair, filling Downtown Cary Park with color, flavor, and the unmistakable hum of fall in motion.

“Fall is actually one of our most beloved seasons at the market,” says market manager Brett Pinsent. To celebrate the glorious fall weather, families can expect live music, a dedicated children’s activity area, food and craft vendors from across the Triangle, and even a pie-eating contest for those feeling festive and brave. At its core, though, this event is about community—and sustaining the local farms and makers who show up week after week.

“It's a whole lot of fun,” Pinsent adds, “and it also serves as a major fundraiser for the Cary Farmers Market [a 501c3 nonprofit] to help us fund our weekly market year-round and keep the vendor pricing affordable for our small farms and businesses.”
