T

he glow of the holidays has faded, leaving behind the comforting quiet of a Western Wake winter. After the hustle of December, there’s a beautiful moment of surrender in the New Year— a natural, instinctual desire to settle in and cozy up. This January/February issue is dedicated to that feeling: the deep breath you take before you begin the process of renewal, exploration, and adjustment.

We know the New Year often comes with pressure to overhaul your life.

These winners are the foundation of our community, and we are proud to celebrate them for making this such a wonderful place to live, learn, and grow.

If mental health is a focus for your family, be sure to read about the impactful program Ending the Silence—a partnership between Wake County schools and the National Alliance on Mental Illness that is designed to promote vital mental wellness for kids. And for those looking to explore a gentler kind of excitement, our guide to unique Valentine’s Day dates showcases local shops and locales perfect for making new, cozy memories.

This season of renewal feels especially poignant as we refle t on the recent passing of our owner and founder, Ronny Stephens. Ronny was a visionary leader, a kind soul, and the driving force behind the creation of this very magazine. His belief in the power of local storytelling and community connection built the foundation upon which 5 West stands today.

Just as the New Year offers us a clean slate to commit to the things that matter, Ronny’s legacy encourages us to be present and dedicated to the community he loved so much. We move forward with our focus set firmly on elebrating the people and places of Western Wake, honoring his memory by telling our community’s stories with the same passion and integrity he embodied every day.

T

here are people whose influence is felt long before it’s ever formally acknowledged—those steady, generous, quietly powerful presences who help shape both a workplace and the people within it. For Midtown and 5 West magazines, Ronny Stephens was unmistakably one of those presences. His loss leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his impact continues to echo through every corner of this publication.

Ronny had a natural way of bringing people together. Not through grand gestures, but

through the consistency of his character. He was kind in the purest sense of the word— steadfast, thoughtful, and generous without ever seeking attention for it. He offered kindness easily, believing deeply in the importance of treating people well. That belief showed up everywhere: in his family, in the longstanding relationships he built in the magazine world, and in the way he interacted with colleagues, clients, and friends who trusted him implicitly— especially here within the walls of the Midtown offic .

He was also, at his core, devoted. To his work. To the people he worked alongside. To the idea that relationships matter more than transactions. Even on difficult days, he approached his role with a sense of purpose that inspired the rest of us. He took his work seriously, but he never let it overshadow its humanity. In an industry driven by deadlines and shifting schedules, Ronny reminded us that people—not pages—are what make a magazine truly meaningful.

Those who watched him navigate both life and work often noticed the same thing: Ronny had a way of anchoring others.

He created a sense of steadiness, a soft place to land. He built relationships intentionally, nurturing them long after the business part had ended. The trust people placed in him wasn’t accidental; it was earned through years of showing up with sincerity, humor, and reliability.

His humor, too, was one of his gifts. Even on tough days, he was quick with a joke, a smile, or a moment of levity that made the room feel lighter. He could laugh at himself just as easily as he could make others laugh—a rare and disarming trait that bonded people to him instantly.

Among his family, Ronny was known as a strong, gentle presence—a man who balanced softness with stability and made every person in the room feel valued. He formed individual relationships with each of his grandchildren, giving them the kind of intentional attention that becomes a lifelong lesson in how to show up for others. His family remembers him as a pillar, yet

also as a source of comfort. Those qualities extended far beyond home; anyone who worked with Ronny recognized that same grounding force in him.

He loved the small joys of life, the traditions that give a family its rhythm and memories. He loved storytelling, a good laugh, a loyal dog, and the kind of humor that brings people closer together. And he brought those joys into his work as well—reminding us that magazines aren’t only about reporting, but about capturing the heart of a community.

As we honor him in these pages, we carry forward the lessons he leaves behind: to lead with kindness, to invest in relationships, to find humor even in the hard moments, and to treat people with the sincerity they deserve. Midtown and 5 West magazines will continue to reflect the community Ronny cared for—and in many ways, will continue to reflect him.

To Ronny: Thank you for your steady presence, humor, generosity, and the legacy you leave in this magazine and among

the people who create it. We will miss you, but your imprint remains, guiding us forward.

“Every child comes into the world with a program already put in their nervous system that’s supposed to get them stronger, to be on two feet, and explore the world. We never lose that program,” says Anderson.

“And no matter how old we are, if we plug back into that original movement program, it does for us, as an adult, what it did for us as a child. It still works.”

At OSI, gym-goers reawaken to the interconnectedness between every part of themselves—mind, brain, and body. Only when the parts are all on the same page do people start actually working out. And as they do, they also begin to form relationships with one another.

From the gym’s official weekly meetups for moms and EmpowerHER training sessions for women and girls to groups that met at the gym but now spend time together outside it, too, people are building community at OSI as they work to achieve their fitness goals.

Owner and former soccer player and coach Lindsey DeLorenze works hard to ensure that every person who walks through her doors receives a personalized experience meant to help them improve not only their physical fitness, but also their mental health and overall well-being.

“Mental health and emotional health are the foundation of it all, because you have to show up, you have to get there, you have to be receptive to the guidance, information, and application of it all,” says DeLorenze. “All those things are reliant on each other, and need to coexist if we’re really going to achieve the goals that every member wants to do.”

First-time visitors can expect a holistic experience beginning with a consultation with DeLorenze to establish their background, expectations, and goals as well as range of motion and nutrition evaluations. However, just because a lot happens at the start doesn’t mean speed and urgency are the name of the game; Cary Fit focuses on helping people change and develop behaviors and habits over time for long-term success.

Largely (though not solely) a women’s gym, part of how gym-goers reach their goals is by letting their guard down and allowing themselves to be vulnerable while working toward those goals, and it’s then that the Cary Fit community steps in. Topics like hormone health and sleep routines are discussed frequently, allowing members to learn from one another’s experiences. Each person is met where they are and supported—not only by DeLorenze, but also by their fellow gym-goers. You’re surrounded by people who all want to see you succeed, will celebrate when you do, and will help you pick yourself up when you fall. This level of support is what gives each member the confidence to keep going on their own journey.

PEAK CITY GYM 730 W. Williams Street, Apex peakcitygym.com Named for the town of Apex in which it’s located, Peak City Gym is a family-owned training gym that specializes in working with people ages 40 and up.

Established in 2020, Peak City works with members to regain or maintain mobility and strength as they move through age-related life changes. What does this mean? While younger members are welcome,

the exercises and programming provided by Peak City are designed specifically to prevent and combat age-related diseases and conditions like osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and perimenopause.

“In your 20s and 30s, you can get away with a lot more and you can kind of ignore injuries a little bit,” says owner Shane Rabideau. “Once you start getting up to 40, testosterone is dropping, estrogen starts dropping, and you’re inflamed a lot more. Those aches and pains don’t go away so easily, and they’re a little harder to ignore. And so we have a different training style that is a little bit more joint-friendly.”

But it’s not just their knowledge of the changes wrought by aging that made brothers and co-owners Brendan and Shane Rabideau decide to specialize in the 40+ demographic—it’s also the type of close and supportive relationships that Peak City’s members often form. With prior experience working in big-box gyms, they knew they wanted something different when they envisioned the type of facility and culture they wanted to create. They wanted a tight-knit community and a culture where people who are less comfortable in traditional gyms can go to achieve their fitness goals.

And the Rabideaus have worked hard to make Peak City into such a place. Members grow close to one another through gym events like open houses and awards nights with catering or food trucks, as well as self-organized outings, such as meals out after a class. Not only does this build accountability for finishing workouts and achieving fitness objectives, it also builds bonds between members that can then provide support for them during difficult life events, such as cancer, job loss, and divorce.

The common thread running through Original Strength Institute, Cary Fit Project, and Peak City Gym is the powerful realization that human connection is the most vital piece of fitness equipment available. While the specific methods vary, the mission remains unified: transforming physical health through deep, reliable social support. n our fast-paced corner of Wake County, the struggles faced by middle and high school students—from social media pressures to the simple difficulty of navigating adolescence—are often hidden. Thankfully, a vital new partnership is working to break down the stigma and shine a light on the youth mental health crisis.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Wake County has teamed up with the Wake County Public School System to begin piloting “Ending the Silence for Families” at 10 local schools. This crucial

initiative provides parents and youth with the tools to recognize mental health warning signs and understand the next steps to take. At the helm of this important work is Mark Simon, executive director of NAMI Wake County, whose own experience of bipolar disorder in his youth deeply influences his commitment to the young people of our area. The following interview with Simon provides more information about this initiative and what this collaborative effort means for our community.

How did you get started with NAMI, and what led to your becoming executive director?

My involvement with NAMI started as a youth in need of support. I struggled with bipolar [disorder] as an adolescent and young adult for about 10 years until I stabilized. When I was last discharged from hospitalization in 2008, I was handed information on NAMI’s Peer-to-Peer class. I took the class, and it changed my life. [It] eliminated my isolation, and it also gave me the tools to get my life together and build my toolkit for success.

NAMI programs saved my life. I’ve been affiliated with NAMI for 17 years, so I have a deep understanding of who we are, what we do, and who we serve. I think these previous experiences have made transitioning into this role as executive director easier, and make this professional role a very meaningful experience.

Why is the Ending the Silence presentation important, and what does it include?

Young people are hurting. We are aware of the struggles with bullying and the influences of social media, as well as everything happening in the world.

There are still financial and social barriers to getting help. NAMI Wake County is uniquely poised to tackle the youth mental health crisis by bringing the funders and the volunteers together [to deliver] these programs.

Ending the Silence is an evidence-based program that’s been around for a long time, where research proves it is effective. I myself have presented Ending the Silence scores of times since 2018. The presentation has two co-presenters—a lead adult presenter and a young adult presenter. The adult presenter shares the educational component, the slides that talk about signs and symptoms, how to get help, who to talk to, and how to talk to your child or your teacher, and then there’s a young adult presenter who shares their personal journey.

Are you seeking to build long-term relationships with the 10 schools that started with these presentations?

Absolutely. We seek to build an ecosystem of care for youth and their families that offers continued support.

If families need more in-depth, robust support, I recommend our NAMI Basics program, which is a six-week structured class that helps families take a deeper dive into caring for youth under the age of 22.

I think our collaboration in fall 2025 with Green Level High School is an excellent example of what we can do with any school that wants to partner with us.

They were not one of the 10 schools on our list, but they came to us and asked us to partner. I’m really proud of how their homecoming activities dedicated to mental health awareness came together. I’d love to build an ongoing relationship with Green Level and build partnerships with additional schools.

How do you define the optimal outcome for this collaborative project with the Wake County Public School System?

The real thing we are focused on is impact. We assess survey and evaluation data to confirm that we are changing knowledge, attitude, and perception on mental health. Are people feeling more comfortable and willing to ask for help? Do people ask their loved one how they are doing after taking this presentation?

I think the ultimate goal is to intervene when people are younger—to keep them from experiencing a full-blown crisis later in life.

Ultimately, NAMI Wake County’s vision extends far beyond these 10 pilot presentations. They aim to create a lasting ecosystem of care that encourages continuous support. The message is clear: Whether you are a local school, athletic league, library, homeschooling association, or a youth group at a church, the Ending the Silence program is available and designed for any youth-serving organization. NAMI Wake County is also actively seeking additional volunteer presenters— young people under age 35 with lived experience who are in recovery—to share their personal journeys and give hope to the next generation. NOT YOUR MOTHER’S TEA ROOM Holly Springs’ Pimiento Tea Room celebrates 5 years

F

ive years ago, the Pimiento Tea Room in Holly Springs didn’t officially exist yet. There was no bustling dining room, no clinking of tea cups, and

no line out the door. Instead, on Thanksgiving morning, Matt and Christy Griffith were on the front porch of a historic home on Main Street, handing out “snacky snacks” to neighbors who had placed orders for pickup.

“We did a bunch of prepackaged pimento cheese, black-eyed pea hummus, deviled eggs, Texas sheet cake,” Christy recalls. The idea was to give locals something to nibble on while they waited for their turkeys to cook.

It was a humble, grassroots beginning that perfectly foreshadowed what the Pimiento Tea Room would become: a place deeply rooted in hospitality, history, and community. Now, as they celebrate their fifth anniversary, the Griffiths have cemented their establishment not just as a restaurant, but as a way to say “thank you” to the town that saved them.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF TEA ROOM

From the moment you leave the bustling Main Street behind and step into the quirky, vibrant interior of the 200-year-old house, it is immediately clear that this is not a traditional, stuffy tea service.

“We take ourselves seriously in that we want every guest to have a great experience and great food, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously,” says Christy.

That philosophy is the driving force behind the menu. Christy, who has a culinary background from Wake Tech, designed a concept she calls “New Southern Cuisine.” It involves taking seasonal Southern ingredients and applying a world of global influences.

“It’s not your mama’s tea room,” Christy says—a phrase they often use as a hashtag. You won’t find dainty cucumber sandwiches here. The food is hearty and adventurous. While tea is the star—brewed in French presses—the vibe is relaxed. “We don’t want people to come in feeling like you have to dress up ... you don’t have to have your pinkies up.”

The beverage program is equally inventive, bridging the gap between a tea parlor and a craft cocktail bar.

They infuse spirits with their loose-leaf teas to create complex flavor profiles, such as the G+Tea, a gin and tonic made with Earl Grey–infused gin.

Then there are the scones. A staple of the menu, they are Southern-style cream scones—triangular, fluffy, and more akin to a biscuit than their dense English counterparts. They are served not with jam, but with flavored butters that change with the whims of the kitchen. Options have ranged from savory Hot Honey Scallion to sweet Chocolate Peppermint, or opt for the fan-favorite “Unicorn,” a vanilla butter with sprinkles.

ROOTED IN HISTORY

The setting for this culinary creativity is as important as the food itself. The building dates back to the early 1800s. Over the centuries, it has been a residence, a gift shop, and an engineering office.

When Matt and Christy acquired the property, Matt used his engineering background to carefully peel back the layers of time. Demolition revealed original square nails, hand-hewn planks, and wainscoting hidden under layers of carpet and drywall. They kept the bones of the house but injected it with their own personality—including a bathroom wallpaper so vibrant and popular that it frequently goes viral on social media. And each Christmas, the restaurant becomes an explosion of unique and fun decorations.

They also honor the home’s history in their menu.

One of their signature cocktails, The Widow Nichols, is named after Ginny Nichols, a former resident who, with her husband, ran the post office—and then inherited it

after his death with some savvy will workarounds—out of the back window in the mid-1800s.

GIVING BACK TO HOLLY SPRINGS

While the food and the history are compelling, the true heartbeat of the Pimiento Tea Room is the Griffiths’ connection to Holly Springs. For them, opening a restaurant here wasn’t just a business decision; it was a personal mission. “We love the community of Holly Springs,” says Matt. “They have been supportive of us as a community, and we wanted to be a part of it.”

In 2009, their youngest daughter was diagnosed with cancer. The family was suddenly thrown into a nightmare of treatments and uncertainty.

“People had just done all these fundraisers for us,” Christy remembers. “It was just the outpouring of support from all these people we didn’t even know. We wanted to do something here because we knew the community was supportive, and they were fantastic.”

Their daughter is now 18 and healthy, but the Griffiths never forgot the way the community rallied around them. They wanted to create a place that served that same community, but they also wanted to do something more specific.

“Someone told us once, ‘Use your talents to make the world a better place,’” Christy says. “And we thought, we’re good at throwing a party. So, let’s do this”.

That party became the Pimiento Supper Club.

Launched in September 2021—coinciding with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month—the Supper Club is a monthly ticketed dinner featuring a seven-course tasting menu with wine pairings.

The event allows Christy to stretch her culinary muscles with unique dishes that often end up on the main menu later, but the purpose is purely philanthropic. The Griffiths cover the costs, and the proceeds build a donation pool for CureSearch for Children’s Cancer.

“It blows me away every time I think about it,” Matt says of the funds they’ve raised. It is their way of ensuring that other families receive the same hope they were given years ago. “Without the people that had done the same for our daughter [when she] was diagnosed, she might not have reached the finish line.”

LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE

As the Pimiento Tea Room crosses the five-year mark— a significant milestone for any restaurant, let alone one that opened shortly before the pandemic—Matt and Christy are in brainstorm mode. They are exploring ideas for tea education events or potentially expanding their retail offerings so guests can take a piece of the experience home. But mostly, they are focused on continuing to evolve the dining experience within the walls of the historic house they love.

You realize the entryway coat rack is groaning under the weight of winter layers. The “New Year, New Me” energy often hits a wall when it meets the reality of “Same House, More Stuff.”

s customers walk inside The Spice & Tea Exchange—downtown Apex’s newly opened emporium for tea and other culinary accoutrements— they are met with an expansive array of earthy, herbal, and fresh blends of teas for sale. Customers can browse polished wooden shelves lined with aromatic spices, teas, and other cooking goods. Run by a dynamic fatherand-son duo, Lawson and Trey Rankin, the store brings quality, community, and heart to the Historic District.

Motivated to pursue entrepreneurship and leave a stressful position in finances ehind, Trey Rankin began looking for franchising opportunities before the pandemic. Dutifully, he spent years looking into endeavors before being introduced to The Spice & Tea Exchange by his father. With a preexisting interest in cooking and intrigued by the company’s operation style, they took a leap of faith. By combining Lawson’s extensive background in business and

entrepreneurship with Trey’s years in finance and managerial ositions, the two paired up to open the retail store—a novel venture for them both.

Trey primarily runs the store and calls the shots on the bulk of decisions; however, his father has been a significant factor in the facilitation o the store. “Having a partner to help out when needed and bounce ideas off of has been very important,” says Trey.

Their father-son dynamic instills a positive, respectful working relationship—with the occasional friendly heckling and playful teasing, of course. The familial orientation doesn’t stop there, though. In times of doubt or concern, Trey credits his 16-month-old daughter for being a major source of motivation.

They also hope to expand their wholesale business to include other local businesses such as breweries and restaurants.

Through the twists and turns of business ownership and storefront management, the father-and-son team are optimistic for the future of the shop. With teamwork, trust, and collaboration, Trey and Lawson Rankin have been able to generate a source of quality and community in downtown Apex.

COUCH TO 5K IN THE NEW YEAR A physical therapist’s guide to running a 5K STORY BY SONALI SETHI, PT, DPT

T

here’s something inspiring about watching someone cross a finish line. Seeing their face shining with glee—and no doubt some sweat— might have made you want to run a race, too. My dad had a similar itch. But the few times he ran (without any training), he had to stop abruptly due to pain in his knee.

This further fed into his negative thought loop: “I’m just not good at running.”

What people often overlook is that crossing the finis line is just one moment. The parts that lead up to it—

the training, the injury management, the discipline— that’s what makes a runner.

As a physical therapist, I almost always treat runners after they have been injured. However, after training my dad from couch to 5K last May, I witnessed the impact of training, prevention, and pain management in action.

Pro Tip: If you are dealing with an injury or recovering from one, I recommend checking in with a healthcare provider before starting your 5K journey.

A 5K race is often an ideal starting point for novice runners due to its short distance, adaptable training, and high community spirit. Training does not have a one-size-fits-all approach. What works for your body may not work for another, and that’s okay. My goal is to provide overarching strategies that you can modify to work best for you.

More Walking, Less Running (To Start) Most Couch to 5K programs run about 6–10 weeks. All include some form of interval training: short bursts of running between long bouts of walking. Interval training is designed to give your body time to adjust to running. Many people, like my dad, start off eager and end up overdoing it, which can lead to injury or burnout. When you’re just starting out, it’s completely normal to be out of breath if you try to run more than three minutes. With interval training, you gradually improve your muscle endurance, cardio fitness, and mental toughness so you can keep progressing with confidence The goal here is to find a pace that s comfortable, not exhausting. With each week, you’ll gradually spend a little more time running and less time walking. Here is an example of Week 1 in a Couch to 5K program: Monday: 5-minute brisk walk followed by 5 rounds of

2-minute walk/30-second run Tuesday: Rest Wednesday: 5-minute brisk walk followed by 5 rounds

of 2-minute walk/30-second run Thursday: Cross train or rest Friday: 5-minute brisk walk followed by 6 rounds of

2-minute walk/30-second run Saturday: Cross train or rest Sunday: Rest Pro Tip: Being a slow runner, at least at first, is how you learn t go the distance.

Dynamic Warm-Up, Long Stretch Cooldown No matter what level of flexibility you h ve, a warm-up and cooldown routine while running is essential. Your dynamic warm-up should include a few active movements that take your joints and muscles through their full range of movement.

Here are a few examples of dynamic movements.

Perform 6–10 times on each side.

1. Walking rotational lunges 2. Heel walk/toe walk 3. Hamstring scoops 4. Knee hugs to chest 5. Four-way leg swings 6. Walking hip openers Pro Tip: Move mindfully and with intention, especially in the areas that feel tight. This helps you connect with your body and prepare your muscles, joints, and tendons for running.

Your cooldown should consist of longer-held stretches to help reduce muscle soreness the next day and last between 8–10 minutes. It’s tempting to skip, especially when we’re rushed and ready to move on with our day.

But your cooldown determines how your body recovers.

As the mileage builds, so does the stress on your muscles, tendons, and joints. These stretches allow proper recovery and reduce risk of injury. Focus on lower body muscles, such as quads, hamstrings, calves, glutes, and TFL/IT band. Each stretch should be held between 30–90 seconds on each side. If something feels especially tight, complete the stretch once or twice more.

Ache vs Injury It’s normal to feel sensations in your body throughout your run. The way to distinguish whether the sensation you’re feeling is an ache or an injury is to ask yourself: “Is this pain something I can move through, or is it my body signaling me to stop and make a change?” Aches and muscle soreness are an expected response to a new, challenging activity. They typically ease up as you warm up or fade within one or two days after. Rest days and a proper cooldown can go a long way in helping with muscle recovery.

On the other hand, injury pain is more persistent and gradually worsens as you run. If that happens, take a few extra rest days and focus on recovery: Use an ice pack, increase stretches in the day, or use a foam roller. If the pain still does not ease up, it’s best to pause your running program and consult a medical provider.

Pro Tip: Embrace walking breaks, even on race day! There’s no reward for running nonstop.

Cross-training for best results Cross-training means complementing your running with other forms of exercise, such as weight training, yoga, swimming, or cycling. It can be a great way to add variety to your routine while helping your body meet the demands of running. Over time you’ll notice that your body feels stronger and more pliable, and you can run with more ease.

PUT TO THE TEST Classes and Online Resources are Plentiful for Standardized Testing STORY BY KURT DUSTERBERG

E

very year, high school students are confronted with the challenges of preparing for the future. For those with plans to attend college, part of the process is standardized testing—taking the SAT or ACT. In some cases, scoring well on the test can be the difference between acceptance at a student’s number one choice or settling for a safety school.

But the role of standardized testing has changed in recent years. According to fairtest.org, more than 80% of four-year colleges didn’t require SAT or ACT scores to be submitted in fall 2025.

Of course, that doesn’t mean scores are not considered in the application process. That’s why prep classes, tutoring, and other resources remain a popular option for college-bound students.

Online resources like Khan Academy offer free comprehensive lessons, exercises, and practice tests. But for students who are accustomed to learning in a classroom setting, in-person instruction remains a popular choice.

Wake Technical Community College offers a six-week SAT class that meets once a week for $325. The class reviews content and teaches

test-taking strategies in a setting of 6–12 students prepping for the exam.

“It’s a six-Saturday commitment,” says instructor Debbie Cunningham, a certifie K–12 teacher who has taught prep classes for three years. “We take the modifie diagnostic of the SAT at the beginning, so from there, we’re able to give them a score.

We do a data analysis and ask, ‘What is the score you want to get? Where are we at?

What’s an area where we can improve in six weeks?’”

The majority of SAT test questions have multiple-choice answers, so a lot of the instruction focuses on how to determine the correct answers. “You go through eliminating what is wrong,” Cunningham says. “Particularly in math, they can get a higher score using the plug-in strategy—if they know the equation, [they can plug the answer] in to see if it’s correct.”

The SAT is now administered in a digital format, but the test is still taken with a proctor. The length of the exam has also been reduced from three hours to two hours. Those adjustments might help ease students’ concerns, but the classes also play a role in making test day go smoothly.

In each of the prep classes, students tackle close to 50 questions.

“It’s a lot of reflection, understandin their strengths and weaknesses in answering the questions, as well as saying, ‘If we get stuck, what are we going to do?’ It’s not so much, if you get stuck, let’s choose ‘C.’ But why did you choose your answer, and what was your reasoning behind that?”

Aside from in-person classes, there are plenty of other resources. Wake Tech uses The Princeton Review’s test books, which include multiple tests for both the reading and writing section and the math section.

Collegeboard.org offers The Official S T Study Guide, which includes seven SAT practice tests. The site also has a popular “SAT Question of the Day” feature, available on the website or app.

Regardless of how parents and students approach the topic, it’s important to be realistic when preparing for standardized tests. The coveted perfect score of 1600 shouldn’t necessarily be every student’s goal.

“The [college] program or the major you’re going into should also influenc why you’re shooting for a certain score,” Cunningham says. “A lot of people who get a 1600 are focusing on it like it’s their job.”
