8 KEYS TO INCLUSION
We believe inclusion is about more than just accessibility.
COMMUNITY
RELATIONSHIPS
We believe play spaces are essential components of thriving communities.
We believe building community is more than transactional.
Identify the piece of equipment that you think children will be most excited about. Make sure that this activity is usable by everyone.
Develop specialized areas of play. This allows choices by a child who may be overstimulated by a noisy or very active area.
Surfacing can be divided into two groups: loose and unitary. Unitary surfacing allows people in wheelchairs to get to the play activities easily.

ROUTES & MANEUVERABILITY
Routes through the play area should be wide enough for people in wheelchairs to pass one another, as well as enter, turn, and exit without difficulty.

SAFETY SURFACING
The safety, accessibility, and well-being of playground users is heavily dependent on the type of surfacing used. With falls accounting for 70% of playground-related injuries, Midstates Recreation will assist you in identifying the most suitable surfacing for your playground.
POURED IN PLACE RUBBER
UNITARY SURFACING
Poured in place (PIP) is a unitary surface that is created in two layers: buffing and cap. The buffing layer holds the impact attenuating qualities, while the cap layer of rubber granules on top of the buffings provide a 1/2” thick protective layer. The cap layer allows for theming, graphics, shapes, and wayfinding paths.
SITE ENHANCEMENTS Enhance your space with site furnishings, shades, shelters, pavilions, themed surfacing, outdoor music instruments, and more! Adding elements like benches, picnic tables, trash cans, and shade will make your recreation space even more inviting for visitors to stay, watch, and play.
This surfacing option must be installed over compacted stone, asphalt, or concrete.
ENGINEERED WOOD FIBER Engineered wood fiber (EWF) is the most cost-effective safety surfacing that is considered ADA accessible. It is made from virgin wood shreds and is sometimes referred to as playground mulch. This natural surface requires ongoing maintenance via raking, redistributing, and routine topping-off during its lifetime. A perimeter border containment system is recommended to keep the surfacing in the play area.
BONDED RUBBER
UNITARY SURFACING
Bonded Rubber is a unitary surface that is similar to PIP in material and installation but has the look of EWF. This surfacing option is mixed and poured on-site at a thickness that is determined by your play structure’s critical fall heights. Bonded rubber comes in natural colors and offers the benefits of unitary surfacing while maintaining an organic appearance.
SYNTHETIC TURF
UNITARY SURFACING
Synthetic Turf is a unitary artificial grass product that consists of a top layer (the actual turf fiber that looks like blades of grass) and a cushion layer that provides impact attenuation. This surfacing product comes in two options: turf with infill and turf without infill. Infill is a loose granule that helps discourage the flattening of grass blades and should not be used in a play environment that is designed for infants and toddlers. Synthetic Turf offers a low-maintenance surfacing option that may provide a cooler temperature than other unitary surfaces. Occasional raking in high traffic areas will help grass blades stand back up and look new.
LOOSE RUBBER MULCH Loose Rubber Mulch is the recycled tire version of EWF. It requires up to 50% less material than EWF, is less likely to move in average rain, and is non-toxic. Made from recycled tires, rubber mulch is coated with a highly durable and non-toxic paint that can withstand UV rays and other weather elements. Loose Rubber Mulch is long-lasting, doesn’t attract insects or fungi, and doesn’t decompose. However, it can be challenging to put back in place when displaced and is considered a high maintenance surfacing. Like with EWF, a perimeter border containment system is recommended to keep the surfacing in the play area.
