Lamont Anthony Wells
Rev. Lamont Anthony Wells (he/him/his) is the Executive Director, Network of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Colleges and Universities (NECU). NECU is an association of 28 colleges and universities of the ELCA.
Wells also serves as Strategic Advisor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Wartburg Teological Seminary, and is the immediate past National President of the African Descent Lutheran Association (ADLA). Previously, he served as Program Director for Campus Ministry in the ELCA (LuMin). LuMin is a network of inclusive faith-based and service communities on and near campuses at over 240 colleges and universities across the USA.
In his career, he has led programs and communities of multiple denominations in New York, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, including having served as the Lutheran Campus Pastor for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the Atlanta University Center (AUC).
He earned a Professional Certification in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion from Cornell University. As a professionally trained coach, he eff ectively helps individuals, groups, and organizations to unlock their potential and maximize their own performance.
Previously he earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and Sociology at Morehouse College. Rev. Wells has also earned a Master of Arts in Christian Education and a Master of Divinity degree in Leadership from the Interdenominational Teological Center/Johnson C. Smith Seminary. He completed Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Emory University. Pastor Wells has studied Leadership at Harvard Divinity School, Princeton Teological Seminary and was named a clergy fellow of the Chautauqua Institute.
Pastor Wells is a member of the National Honor Society of Teta Phi and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Along with his years of service, he has received numerous honors and awards signifying his spirit of excellence, including his induction into the prestigious Board of Distinguished Preachers at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.
A dynamic speaker and prophetic preacher, Rev. Wells is frequently called to address organizations, churches, conferences, convocations, retreats, and workshops in various public, social, and ecumenical communities. His prophetic message of ecumenism and social justice motivates him as a leader, team builder, and community organizer.
Terra Uhing is graduating with a Doctor of Education in Leadership and Innovation from Midland University, and as a proud member of the program’s inaugural cohort, she is grateful for the perseverance it took to balance a career, a family, and a farm to arrive at this moment.
Terra serves in a leadership role in the public health field and has worked in and around the Fremont area since 2011. Her organization serves Dodge, Saunders, and Washington counties in eastern Nebraska. Grounded in the belief that we are all better when we lift each other up, Terra is passionate about making a meaningful diff erence through collaboration and leadership in public health.
Outside of her professional work, Terra lives in rural Craig on her family farm with her husband, where they have raised their four children: Ashley, Brett, Aubrey, and Addaley. She is also the proud grandmother of Annie.
Dr. Uhing is deeply honored to serve as the 2026 commencement speaker and looks forward to celebrating this milestone alongside her fellow graduates.

Raiquen Ra ffi n Pampa Raffin is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Data Analytics and a compressed major in Financial Services. Originally from Córdoba, Argentina, he has represented Midland University as a pole vaulter on the track and field team. Troughout his time at Midland, Pampa has exemplified leadership as a Student Hall Director and through his involvement on campus as President of Global Warriors, member of the Student Senate, and a multiple-time award winner in FBLA. His journey stands as a testament to resilience and the transformative power of embracing new challenges to lead in the world with purpose.

As first-year students at Midland, the Class of 2026 gathered around the Cross at the Center fountain. Students each made a wish for their academic experience while tossing a medallion into the fountain. Tese medallions have been returned to our graduating class of 2026 to wear as a part of today’s commencement regalia.
Named in memory of John R. Prauner, 1955-1977, this award is presented annually to the member of the Midland senior class who, in the judgment of the institution, best exemplifies scholarship and citizenship, the outstanding qualities for which John was known before his untimely death on November 4, 1977, during his senior year at Midland.
A business major and computer science minor, John was a leader in numerous academic and social organizations. He died of Immunoblastic Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer. Te John Prauner Senior Award is considered to be the top honor that one can earn as a Midland student. (John’s father, Edwin Prauner, was a member of the Business Faculty at Midland from 1940-1981).

Te caps and gowns worn during formal academic affairs in American colleges and universities are the direct descendants of the everyday attire worn in the universities of medieval England during the 12th and 13th centuries. Each school had its particular dress so that an Oxford man could be distinguished from a Cambridge man, or a divinity student from a layman. Because of the tremendous growth of American colleges, the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume was organized and a uniform code, adopted by over 700 institutions, was established. Te code established three types of gowns and three types of hoods for bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees, respectively. Te bachelor’s gown has a long, pointed sleeve hanging open, whereas the master’s gown has a long closed sleeve, square at the end with an arc of a circle just above the bottom. Te sleeve extends below the knee with the arm coming through a slit near the elbow. Te doctoral gown is characterized by a voluminous, bell-shaped sleeve on which appear three velvet bars. Te gowns usually are black.
Te hood is the most important and distinctive feature of the costume. Te hoods for all degrees are lined with silk in the official academic color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. Te hoods also have an edging or trim of velvet, with the color indicating the course or discipline to which the degree pertains. Te lining is exposed when the hood is worn. Te bachelor’s hood is rather short with narrow velvet edging. Te master’s hood is considerably longer, has a wider velvet edging, and exposes more of the lining. Te doctoral hood has the widest velvet edging, greatest length and fullest exposure of the lining.
Te black mortarboard cap with tassel is worn with each type of gown, although those persons holding a doctorate often wear a velvet tam. Bachelor’s and master’s degree holders usually wear black tassels, while those persons holding doctorates wear gold.
