MIDLAND PROPERTY & LIVING Stress-free moving with kids Moving is a daunting task that requires equal amounts of time, planning and packing. It is not uncommon to feel overwhelmed or at a loss on where to start, especially if you are moving with young children.

Removalist expert at Muval and mum of two, Mel Sievers, has seen more than her fair share of good and not-so-good stories, the latter mostly for moving sans planning.

“Moving is challenging because it is usually not just a physical process, but also an emotional one,” Mel says.

“It is not just about moving boxes. It is uprooting the life you and your kids have gotten accustomed to, to start somewhere new. In my experience, the move goes more smoothly when you involve the whole family and make decisions together."

Having a few tricks up your sleeve can help ease this burden, and perhaps add a little fun for the kids in the process.

Plan ahead Organise your thoughts and write down the things you need and want to do. Put it in a timeline while you’re at it. It is easier to tick-off your to-dos when you see them on a list.

Consider things that are usually overlooked, like sourcing a removalist service early on, disconnection and connection of utilities, calling the cleaners, and changing of address, to name a few. Keeping to your to-do list will ensure minimal disruption to your little ones and a happier stress-free family.

This includes timing your move. April and May tend to be the slower months of the year, whereas November to January is peak, and it can be challenging to find a mover for a lower cost during these months.

Get the lay of the land If you have not yet been where you are heading, go online and do your research. Familiarise yourself with the essential places like daycare, schools, supermarkets, GP clinics and nearby takeaways for those days that you cannot be bothered to cook!

Having kids onboard means that you must add more places of interest - parks and playgrounds, for instance. Knowing your options gives you confidence and a little peace of mind.

Back to basics Make a list and check it twice, unlike the popular Christmas song, this list directly impacts the number of your moving boxes. Sort, pack or discard your belongings ahead of your move. Include items that you use on a regular basis and consider selling or giving away items that you don’t need.

Hosting a garage sale is a perfect way to dispose of your belongings while making extra cash to offset your other moving expenses. It’s also a great way to get the kids involved let them preselect which toys they would like to part ways with and use their sale money to purchase new items once you have settled in the new home.

Pack and unpack with the crew Divide and conquer! Assign and encourage members of the family to box-up their stuff. Let

kids join in the fun. For days that you need a little more than a cup of coffee, your little ones can take away the monotony of wrapping, packing and sealing up boxes. Play a simple guessing game of grouping things, for example – just don’t forget to mark the boxes!

When it’s time for the bedrooms, pack up the kids’ rooms last and unpack them first in the new home. Amid the excitement and chaos, they will have a safe haven and help stick to crucial routines.

You can also continue the fun once you have unpacked by letting your kids' imaginations run wild with the empty cardboard boxes you were otherwise going to throw away. Whether they’re creating cardboard forts or impressive dollhouses, it will be a memorable experience the kids will enjoy.
