Ongoing troubles at the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant have forced Coliban Water to make increased releases of wastewater from the plant to the Campaspe River from last Friday.

Despite the construction of new storage lagoons at the plant, lagoon volume last week reached 92 per cent, and the Environment Protection Agency was informed of the current operating status at the site. Managing director Damian Wells said affected landowners had been notified and the releases would be in line with Coliban's EPA licence conditions for water quality.

"The final stage of our $17 million Kyneton Solutions Project is the Kyneton Recycled Water Irrigation Scheme, which will pipe Class C water to irrigators," Mr Wells said.

"Until this pipeline is complete in the first part of 2022, and the storage/irrigation and release model can be balanced, we need to manage water at the plant to avoid uncontrolled releases to the environment."

Greenhill farmer Huntly Barton said he and other landowners continued to be frustrated with the ongoing release of trade wastewater, which Coliban Water had promised never to release to

the river again.

"They need to spend money to find a solution for the invasion of stormwater into the sewerage system because this is what's causing the problem," Mr Barton said.

"This is a problem that we know is not going to be resolved soon and it's going to take years but they need to change their direction and the board must lead them.

"The direction has to be to produce a higher quality of water that will not damage the environment, that's the only solution in the long term."

Mr Barton said Coliban Water's board needed to be held accountable.

"Storage has been their only solution and we thought it would take five years to fill their new dams, but they've filled in 18 months," he said.

"They've gone from storing 200 megalitres of trade wastewater 18 months ago to 700 megalitres of water.

"These ponds have filled from average seasonal rainfall."

Mr Wells said Coliban Water was in final negotiations with expression of interest applicants for the Kyneton Recycled Water Irrigation Scheme.

Yesterday various major news outlets reported that former State Opposition Liberal leader Mathew Guy would be attempting a comeback with present leader Michael O’Brien in danger of being ousted, perhaps as early as today.

Mr Guy and vocal Liberal Tim Smith quit shadow cabinet yesterday morning.

Matthew Guy stepped down as Liberal leader after losing the 2018 election. He has consistently denied he wants his old job back.

Less than six months ago an attempt by dissident Liberals to dislodge Mr O’Brien failed.

Newham store burgled

Police are investigating a burglary at the Newham General Store overnight last Sunday night. Thieves forced a window to gain access to the building sometime between 5.30pm on Sunday August 29 and 3am on the Monday morning and stole alcohol and other stock to an approximate value of $2000.

Detectives are investigating a number of promising avenues of enquiry.

Macedon Ranges residents are petitioning Regional Roads Victoria to honour plans to save some of Gisborne’s oldest heritage in the Kilmore and Melbourne Roads intersection upgrade.

The $12.5 million state government upgrade to improve traffic flow and pedestrian crossings puts at risk a historic bluestone bridge and channel and significant trees.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council intervention last year saw RRV agree to protect the heritage bridge and channel. RRV revealed in June the the bridge over bridge solution was no longer viable.

“The two main issues that have persuaded RRV ... were ground conditions and flood risks,” a report to council stated.

RRV intended to progress the work on the intersection upgrade with the aim to have works under way in early 2022. Both the council and community are seeking further options.

Gisborne and Mount Macedon Districts Historical Society president Frank Porter said it was important to explore other avenues.

In 1874 a bluestone bridge was constructed over the now called Bunjil Creek at the entrance from Melbourne to Gisborne on the Mount Alexander Road, which is now Melbourne Road.

All traffic from Melbourne and Bendigo to Gisborne travelled over this bridge. In the days before the motor vehicle, it was used by horse and cart, wagons, and Cobb & Co. With the increase of the motor vehicle the bluestone bridge was modified in 1927 to enable the passage of the ever-increasing vehicle and heavier traffic. This modification only had minor effect on the existing bridge structure.

Farming F arming for for a b better etter future future MASG regenerative agriculture workshop participants enjoy a hands-on workshop on multi-species cover cropping at Muckleford earlier this year.

Farmers in Mount Alexander Shire are learning how to increase productivity and profitability through the practice of regenerative farming.

They're benefiting from workshops run by the Mount Alexander Regenerative Agriculture Group, which provide practical demonstrations and on-ground implementation.

Regenerative agriculture has been identified as a critical means by which we can mitigate climate change and also develop greater resilience to the effects of global warming.

The practice draws atmospheric carbon down into the earth through photosynthesis, which can be measured through testing for organic carbon levels in the soil.

Healthier soils store more water and increase nutrients to grow more resilient pastures and help drought-proof landscapes.

MASG's Deane Belfield, who facilitates the program, said United Nations estimates revealed declining top soil levels on our planet had only 60 growing seasons left.

"Regenerative farming practices and the use of products such as biochar and compost can enrich the soil and ensure it is suitable for growing healthy produce and grain

into the future," he said.

"Increased soil organic carbon can help the community achieve its goal of zero net emissions by 2030."

In 2019 the group received funding through the North Central Catchment Management Authority to facilitate the three-year program, which involves up to 70 landholders.

Topics include soil and plant biology, soil testing, cover crops, managed grazing, identifying native and pasture grasses, revegetation, dung beetles and bio-amendments such as biochar and compost.

Five dung beetle nurseries have been established by group members, the aim being to multiply the number of beetles across the shire many thousands of times within a few years.

Farmers commit to adopting a range of regenerative agriculture methods during that time and have their soil tested before and after to assess any changes in its carbon levels.

The most recent workshop on multi-species cover cropping included a three-hour morning session in Castlemaine by one of Australia’s top educators where

participants were exposed to the theory, science, practical implementation strategies and case studies.

This was followed by a hands-on afternoon session at a Muckleford sheep/beef farm that enabled workshop participants to see some of the equipment and methods in practice and discuss what would work best on their own properties.

Subsequent workshops have included a holistic grazing session at Walmer and a revegetation event at Guildford.

Harcourt garlic grower and workshop participant Zane Tronson said being part of the Mount Alexander Regenerative Agriculture Group had been the single most valuable source of knowledge and support for his property.

"The information and experience I have gathered in the last two years will benefit our land (and the land of some of those that I share my experiences with) for the rest of our time caring for it, and we trust this exceptional program can continue,” he said.

On August 1 unknown persons broke into a shed at the Lancefield Cemetery and escaped with a brush cutter and air compressor. This followed a burglary at a rural property. Owners of a trailer heard it being removed from their High Street property and managed to locate it abandoned nearby.

Wanted: ex-prisoners for theatre project Eve Lamb

Local men who are ex-prisoners or have personally experienced the criminal justice system are wanted to participate in an innovative new paid theatre project that's ultimately hoped to help improve the state's criminal justice and rehabilitation system.

Local producer with the Out Alive arts and justice project in Castlemaine is community arts facilitator Lisa D'Onofrio.

She says the aim is to find at least five men to take part in a four-day paid theatre workshop to culminate in a live show – next month.

Ms D'Onofrio is known to many theatre lovers for her key role a couple of years back in another local theatre project involving inmates, called Letters From The Inside.

"We are seeking males aged 18 and upwards in the local area who have been to prison or have experience in dealing with the criminal justice system, to participate in these paid workshops," says Ms D'Onofrio whose day job is running literacy programs in prisons.

"We're looking at questions of justice and rehabilitation," she says.

While Ms D'Onofrio is producer for the project, the artistic director and project leader is James Brennan, an award winning artist who's worked professionally as director, composer and performer in Australia, UK, Brasil, USA and Europe for the past 20 years.

Ex-offenders and those with experience of the criminal justice system are being sought to participate in an innovative live theatre project coming to Castlemaine next month. arts and justice organisation KIN and has made arts and justice projects inside and outside prisons in Australia and Europe.

Ms D'Onofrio says the Out Alive project brings together artists and people with criminal histories to try to find solutions to criminal justice problems.

"We will be asking how can we improve the way we treat people who've been to prison? What might the parole system look like in an ideal world?" she says.

"Participants will gain basic performance skills in an affirming and enjoyable environment and can also expect to build com-

munication skills and strategies for dealing with difficult situations.

"All participants in the workshops will receive payment.

"On the final day of the workshop, we also hope to have a live public performance at the Phee Broadway, and to invite a small audience to witness our work and contribute to an open discussion about the results."

Youth music opportunity

Young musicians have the chance to professionally record their music for free as part of Macedon Ranges Council's Making Tracks music program. Youths taking part will also be supported to create and film their own video clips and perform at a showcase event in October at the Kyneton Town Hall.

People aged 12-25 are encouraged to apply for the music recording sessions, which

Indigenous talent to feature at fringe Lisa Dennis

A new play written by Yapeen local Brodie Murray will premiere at this month's Melbourne Fringe Festival.

The Wamba Wamba man and Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts graduate penned Billy's Choice with dramaturgy by acclaimed playwright Geoff Kelso.

The new offering by the 20-year-old actor and writer follows the the success of his debut play Soul of Possum, commissioned for First Nations festival YIRRAMBOI in Melbourne in May 2021 and supported by Castlemaine State Festival, the Sidney Myer Fund and City of Melbourne.

Murray told the Express it had been a whirlwind 12 months completing his studies in Western Australia, providing input into the live readings of Soul of Possum at the Castlemaine State Festival in March, and taking on a role in the performances of Soul of Possum at YIRRAMBOI in May. "We were really fortunate to complete our run of Soul of Possum a week and a half before Lockdown 4.0 was announced.

It was incredible to see the work brought to life and to be part of that process," he said.

The play received rave reviews with publication Stage Whispers stating - “Other theatre makers could learn from this stripped back but powerful production… This play is a huge

achievement for Brodie Murray, Declan Furber Gillick, their collaborators and the YIRRAMBOI and Castlemaine Festivals”.

Murray's latest work Billy's Choice was written as part of the Yirra Yaarnz play reading series and presented at Perth’s Blue Room Theatre in 2020.

The contemporary offering is also set on Wamba Wamba country near present-day Swan Hill and explores the conflict that can arise as young people seek independence.

Billy’s Choice sheds a light on how young people can feel when confronted with big decisions.

Something that Murray is familiar with, having moved from his regional hometown in Yapeen to pursue his career in theatre.

The writer said the new play was set in the current day and explored the relationships between a young man, his father, and his uncle and mentor.

The play, in which Murray will play Billy, focuses on the cultural and societal contexts of contemporary Indigenous Australians. It is a story about the power of becoming grounded in culture, and the challenges of moving away from family and Country.

Murray is thrilled that highly respected Indigenous actress, narrator and director Rachael Maza has been appointed to direct the new production.

"However, the production will go ahead in an online performance or radio format. We will be exploring those options over the coming weeks as the work comes together," he said.

Murray has also won a leading supporting role in An Indigenous Trilogy, written/directed by acclaimed playwright, Wathaurong/ Ngarrindjeri man Glenn Shea, to be staged at Carlton's La Mama Theatre.

Wellness retreat for Romsey?

A wellness retreat and organic farm have been proposed for Highfields at Romsey.

"The retreat aims to celebrate the power of silence and rejuvenation through healing foods, meditation and yoga based on the 5000-year-old tradition of Ayurveda," plans state.

The application includes construction of a yoga room, pool studio, olive production warehouse and conference room.

Other works would see internal reconfiguration of a barn to accommodate 11 bedrooms and the existing equine area converted into a gravel car park.

The proposal would allow for up to 22 patrons at the Crooked Road property and five on-site staff.

The planned olive production warehouse would expand the use of the property’s existing olive grove.

The proposal also seeks to introduce a large sustainable farm with organic fruit trees and vegetable/ herbs for both commercial and retreat consumption.

Proponents envisage on-site chefs having direct access to produce from the gardens and to educate patrons through cooking classes to showcase the benefits of organic sustainable living.

The retreat would also run meditation, yoga and other teaching programs within the proposed buildings.

Plans show the applicant seeks to maintain the surrounding gardens designed by Rick Eckersley.

The application is now being advertised.

Mount Alexander Shire Council is amending its planning scheme to introduce the updated guidelines for building or altering buildings in the town’s heritage areas.Council adopted the updated Maldon Design Guidelines in September last year after extensively consulting the community, including the Maldon Design Guidelines Project Advisory Group, and urban and heritage advisors over two years.

Under planning laws it must now amend its planning scheme with Planning Scheme Amendment C96 to formally incorporate the updated guidelines, a step requiring their exhibition for community feedback for a further six weeks.

Mount Alexander Shire councillor Stephen Gardner, who represents the Tarrengower Ward in which Maldon sits, said incorporating the guidelines highlighted council’s commitment to protecting the town’s heritage.

“The previous guidelines had not been updated since they were originally prepared more than 40 years ago and the revised version is all about encouraging buildings that complement Maldon’s historic streetscape character,” Cr Gardner said.

“Council has taken great care to ensure that our community has been informed and listened to as we prepared the guidelines, and this provides a further opportunity for affected members of the community to make a submission as we

prepare to take this next step.”

The Maldon Design Guidelines provide detailed design criteria for buildings within the township boundary covered by precinct heritage overlays, places with individual heritage overlays and areas affected by Significant Landscape Overlay Schedules 1 and 3.

The proposed C96 amendment is open for public exhibition for six weeks until Sunday October 10.

Amendment documents and information on how to make a submission can be viewed at www.mountalexander.vic. gov.au/MaldonDesignGuidelines or during business hours at the Civic Centre in Castlemaine.

Council will also run two sessions at the Maldon Community Centre (subject to COVID-19 restrictions) to further inform residents and land owners about the amendment and the updated guidelines.

Solid winter rainfall has meant Coliban Water’s catchments are in a strong position leading into spring.

Executive general manager of climate and population adaptation Steve Healy said the storages received 40 gigalitres of inflows during winter.

“That’s around double what we would normally expect over this period. In July alone, we received 111 millimetres of rainfall at the Malmsbury Reservoir," Mr Healy said.

“Our total winter rainfall was 240 millimetres, 36 millimetres more than last year and close to the long-term average.

“We are holding around 19 gigalitres more in storage than we were for the same time last year, and the outlook is favourable for the months ahead."

Coliban Water’s reservoirs began spilling in July, the earliest they have spilled in almost a decade.

Mysterious M ysterious m marsupials arsupials PHASCOGALE FACTS • The brush-tailed phascogale (sometimes called ‘tuan’) is small, with mostly grey fur, and a characteristic black bushy tail. Active at night, the creature climbs trees, and depends on tree hollows for shelter and nest sites.

• Phascogales forage for spiders, centipedes and beetles on the bark of trees, in leaf litter on the ground, and on fallen timber and logs.

• Phascogales normally require large areas of forest – up to 100 hectares – to roam and forage.

• They have an extraordinary reproductive strategy: males live for one year only and die from stress following a frenzied mating season.

• This means that even a single year with poor reproductive success can have a marked effect on a local population, even leading to local extinction.

La Trobe University researchers have caught on camera one of Victoria’s elusive and threatened marsupials – revealing there’s more brush-tailed phascogales living in central Victoria than previously thought.

The study, recently published in Austral Ecology, used nesting boxes combined with heat-sensing cameras to determine how prevalent the extremely shy, fast-moving creature is in the box ironbark forests near Castlemaine.

It found 84 per cent of the 50 surv rvey v sites were visited by the phascogale, with its distinctive feather duster-like tail – far more than researchers were expecting.

La Trobe PhD candidate Jessica Lawton said the findings were surprising as the species was known to be in decline in Victoria, and had become locally extinct from some regions.

“Although the Mount Alexander region has around 35 per cent forest cover, which is substantial, it’s fragmented,” Ms Lawton said.

“We think phascogales are widely distributed there because they are supported by the large amount of forest, and they use the extensive connections along roadsides and creeks to move through the landscape.”

Although phascogales are found in several Australian states, central Victoria is one of the threatened species’ last remaining strongholds.

Ms Lawton said attaching wildlife cameras to trees was the most reliable way to monitor phascogales.

“They are difficult to detect with techniques such as spotlighting and trapping – they are too nimble and clever,” she said.

Ms Lawton said the study highlighted the need for both public and private land managers to conserv rve v phascogale habitat in the region.

“Conserv rvation v reserv rves v and large tracts of native forests are critical – but so are patches of forest, wooded strips along roadsides and creeks, and scattered trees across farmland,” she said.

“Together they provide a mosaic of suitable habitat and connections across the region, which is vital for animals like the phascogale.”

The La Trobe study utilised 50 of the 150 phascogale nesting box sites installed throughout the Mount Alexander region by community conserv rvation v group, Connecting Country.

Thirteen local volunteers also contributed to the study, assisting with collecting data and installing wildlife cameras.

Protecting phascogales is one of Connecting Country’s flagship projects.

Those interested in supporting the wellbeing of men and boys in the Macedon Ranges are invited to join Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health next week for an online presentation by The Men’s Project at Jesuit Social Services.

Through their ‘Unpacking the Man Box’ workshop they will explore the findings of a survey aimed at improving the wellbeing of men and boys as well as the people in their lives.

The survey found that young Australian men who believe in outdated masculine stereotypes were at significantly higher risk of engaging in behaviours harmful to themselves and to others such as physical violence, sexual harassment, unsafe drinking and online bullying. They were also more inclined to experience negative feelings and emotions.

The presentation will compare the ‘Man Box’ findings to #thehumancode, a similar survey that explored the pressures on men and boys in the Macedon Ranges.

The webinar will look at how people can work together to improve the health and wellbeing of local men and boys and that of the broader community.

“During these challenging times, it is now more important than ever for men and boys to be able to connect with themselves and others including reaching out for the support they need,” said Matt Tyler, executive director of the Men’s Project at Jesuit Social Services.

“We will explore how, as a community, we can challenge Man Box norms to create lasting change so that men and boys can show up as their best selves.”

The Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival is expecting that the visual projection light show planned for the first time this year will go ahead along with the local scarecrow display.

The light show has been produced virtually by Visual Architecture’s Jim Coad and students of Kyneton Primary School.

It was originally planned for Friday September 10 and will still be a feature of this year’s festival but is now likely to be on a Friday later in September when it can be viewed safely from

Mollison Street footpaths.

Local people have created some great scarecrows to be seen around the town. Walkers, while out and about exercising or on the way to do necessary shopping, can find them in unexpected places.

The festival looks forward to the pandemic coming under control in 2022 when Kyneton can expect a completely restored event celebrating 50 years since its inception.

Action urgent on Afghanistan

Fifteen refugee support groups from across Victoria are calling on the federal government to take urgent action to increase its humanitarian response to refugees affected by the events in Afghanistan.

The groups are calling for five major action points to support vulnerable people in Afghanistan, and to assist distressed refugees in Australia who have families trapped in Afghanistan. This includes refugees who currently have no work or settlement rights in Australia.

The first action point is to ask the government to provide permanent protection for all refugees from Afghanistan who are currently on temporary protection visas.

This means removing the prospect of being returned to Afghanistan. Secondly, the groups ask that refugees from Afghanistan can apply to bring their families to safety in Australia.

Finally, the government is also urged to work with our international partners to pressure the Taliban to take genuine steps toward peace and reconciliation.

Local refugee support groups are in Castlemaine, Macedon Ranges and Trentham.

Each group works with refugees and asylum seekers, including in their towns.

They raise funds, provide moral and financial support, food and accommodation.

They continually lobby the government and all politicians for a more humane and respectful treatment of refugees.

Home-Start team leader Jane Worthington is calling for volunteer mentors for families with young children.

Volunteers needed Baptcare’s Home-Start Program, providing families with volunteer mentors, is expanding into the Macedon Ranges Shire and is seeking new volunteers to support local families.

Baptcare’s Home-Start program provides emotional and practical support for parents with at least one preschool-aged child.

The program has been successfully offered in the Greater Bendigo area for 13 years. This free program works with all cultures, religions and backgrounds and assists parents seeking support for post-natal depression, disability and social isolation.

Volunteers are matched with a family to offer emotional support, link them into their local community and build parent confidence.

Volunteers complete a preparation course before working with a family and have ongoing support in their role from the Home-Start team.

Jenny, an existing volunteer, said she made a great choice when she decided to volunteer for the Baptcare Home-Start program.

"I was looking to do something meaningful, that involved new learning that would be rewarding, sometimes challenging and fun. Top score for all of the above!” she said.

Home-Start is now looking for new volunteers to join this remarkable group of dedicated people.

Jane Worthington, Home-Start team leader, said they were so proud to continue service throughout the challenges of the COVID pandemic.

"We need more people who can offer one to two hours a week to provide muchneeded support to families in the Macedon Ranges and Bendigo," Jane said.

"For parents, this one-to-one companionship means so very much.”

Twilight festival off

Kyneton Community House has announced it will not be hosting the Kyneton Twilight Festival in December due to uncertainty around coronavirus restrictions.

The team will instead host the KCH Marketplace online again before Christmas to continue supporting local makers and producers.

Applications are now open to compete in the 2021 FReeZA Battle of the Bands being held at Castlemaine's iconic Theatre Royal on Friday October 29.

Young musicians aged 12-25 years are encouraged to apply and compete against peers to take home a $500 first prize to go towards new equipment, instruments, rehearsal space or recording time.

Applications are open to bands, duos and soloist of all genres.

To be eligible you must be aged between 12 and 25 years and live, work, study or recreate within and around north central Victoria. At least half of the members in each band must be aged 21 years or under.

Nothing could be further from the truth. The reaction of young people in schools across Victoria has been to reach out to each other, to value family and appreciate the efforts being made by others. They are exhibiting empathy, grace and gratitude. Highview College community is very proud of their resilience and compassion.

Highview College students, like students across the state, are experiencing their second year of coping with the unexpected. Students and teachers now switch fluidly between on-campus learning and virtual classrooms. Whether in lockdown or not, students attend every class with their peers and teachers.

The college is fortunate to have embraced a fully integrated, cloud-based learning management system prior to the pandemic. All learning is accessible to parents and students online.

Even more impressive than students engaging in their learning uninterrupted, is the consideration being extended across our community at this time.

Girton Grammar School

There is no questioning the difficultly of remote learning for many students, but one thing that is easily overlooked is the capacity of young people to take responsibility for their own learning.

In surveys conducted within Girton Grammar's senior school, students reported “increased self-directed learning” as their best achievement during remote learning.

"We know that students who are self-directed in their

learning become motivated, persistent and use initiative.

These are the qualities not only of successful students but successful people," said Dr Clayton Massey, Head.

"As educators, our natural inclination is sometimes to provide students, especially weaker students, with more direct instruction, increased support, and even hand-holding when what they need is improved learning autonomy."

More than 60 per cent of the senior school students have indicated that they value the increase in self-directed learning that they have gained during remote learning periods. How the school nurtures this learning autonomy is at the forefront of every teacher's mind. It is a small win from learning at home the school intends to maintain.

"Our approach during remote learning has encouraged students to be consciously grateful for the small joys in their lives," Dr Massey said.

"We kicked off this thinking last year with the Girton Gratitude Project, through which students reported being more grateful (in order) since the pandemic began for their friends, teachers and school staff, and the family members with whom they live. This was particularly pleasing for our hard-working teachers and support staff."

The school is proud of its remote learning program.

Senior school students follow their daily timetable and have live online contact with the relevant subject teacher every lesson. In junior school, the classroom teacher has extensive contact with students for literacy and numeracy in the mornings. After lunch, students are provided with classes from specialists, including science, music, art, and drama teachers.

Student wellbeing staff are supporting students in myriad ways, most recently through a whole-school “Zoomlympics” competition which helped to provide one of the small moments of joy for students each day.

Time to Gisborne Primary School Gisborne Primary School’s vision is to develop respectful, resilient, responsible and inquiring students who are inclusive, caring community members who embrace diversity. The 2021 LMCLP participants have enjoyed their experience.

Callout for community leaders Become a confident and capable community leader by joining the Loddon Murray Community Leadership Program for 2022.Participants will be inspired, challenged and supported to develop confidence, skills and a deeper understanding of leadership.The program consists of five three-day retreats and a number of zoom interactive online sessions over 10 months from February to November 2022.The LMCLP is a transformational program delivered annually since 1998 to support participants' personal and professional development in a community context.Many of the LMCLP’s more than 530 graduates have gone on to serve in positions such as local government councillors and executives, and as board members and volunteers on key community and government groups across the region.LEAD Loddon Murray executive officer Keith MacQueen said with recovery from the impacts of the COVID pandemic being paramount for communities across our region, access to high-quality community leadership

Vicki Edwards Castlemaine To paraphrase what I said in a previous letter - Not only is there urgent need to reduce our carbon imprint, there is dire need to reduce humanity's imprint, and the consequent impact on Mother Earth.

As Albert Einstein allegedly said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them”.

There exists a simplistic view of the climate crisis we're in, and the emerging body of literature highlighting cracks in the foundation of the mainstream energy transition narrative has been ignored.

Longstanding calls from ecologists and informed environmentalists for society to employ a multi-disciplinary approach toward environmental change '... caused, or influenced by people either directly or indirectly ...' has largely fallen on deaf ears. Most people have succumbed to the mechanistic–reductionist paradigm.

When the climate crisis is considered within its broader context of ecological 'overshoot', it highlights numerous collectively fatal problems with so-called renewable energy technologies. Alternative solutions require of humanity a paradigm shift in ways of thinking.

Mother Nature illustrates the interdependence and interrelationship of all her systems. Nothing in nature grows in isolation of its surrounds. Every animal - fourlegged or winged or swimming; every plant, rock, fungi, bush, tree, creepy crawly, worm etc. has its place in the healthful functioning.

The reality is that climate change is only one symptom of systems destabilisation as the human enterprise has come to overwhelm the ecosphere. And there are currently no viable solutions (technical or financial) for electrifying the many highheat-intensive manufacturing processes involved in constructing high-tech wind turbines and solar panels (not to mention all other products in modern society). Earth's resources has a defined ecological limit.

After all, humankind is not the most important element existing on Earth. Their true role is one of custodian.

The entire creation is sacred, dynamic.

is considering zoning changes of rural/conservation/farming zones to that of mixed usage, presumably to make our area more available for a growing population. Unfortunately denser housing and installations of one sort or another, while increasing council’s revenue, may necessitate greater allied infrastructure thus cancelling out the financial benefits.

Increased acreage break-up into smaller plots has many poor planning precedents that should not be followed in the future.

One example is small residential acreages around the Hanging Rock, which made it necessary to acquire the East Paddock in order to have at least one uninterrupted view of the Hanging Rock.

This soon led to commercial pressures for concerts and fairs there, and, shortly after, to extra installations of toilets, lighting, car parking etc. to support them.

Enlightened countries know the value of their landscapes to visitors and, indeed, actively seek to preserve them and their farming activities by subsidising cattle and sheep raising in the Alps, restoring thousands of kilometres of stone terracing in the Cinque Terra, retaining landscapes of the Lake District in the UK and wildflower meadows and forests of Eastern Europe to name a few.

Biodiversity is thus maintained, continuity of traditional farming pursuits supported, farm produce made available, the farming land remains intact and rural vistas are there to be enjoyed by visitors.

MRSC could be really brave, resist the pressure for semi-rural cut up and instead safeguard our farming enterprises, our soils and our scenery.

It is good to have visitors if there is something left for them to see and experience.

It is good to have walking and cycling tracks, forested parks, sustainable eco systems, and sensible bushfire plans.

It is good to see, the sweep of our landscape scenery with livestock grazing our pastures, the maintenance of our rich volcanic soils, the reduced farm miles for produce.

It is good to retain Victoria’s first biolink, a positive initiative in supporting the viability of flora and fauna throughout our special area.

Hanging Rock is a Victorian icon. It is a place to which people come and feel its 'ancientness' and the spirit of the surrounding and spread out below with crags and pastures and forests stretching for tens of kilometres. This underscores Man’s basic needs to connect with the land in a way that Aboriginal sensibility epitomises.

Let's hope wise counsel ensues and that what attracts now will not be demeaned by adverse pressure for diluted planning controls.

Start a conversation Christine Morgan, CEO, The National Mental Health Commission COVID-19 remains an ever-present spectre particularly with NSW in its tenth week of lockdown and VIC and ACT following suit.

It is clear that mental health and wellbeing – particularly that of our children and young people – is and will continue to be impacted, as we are feeling like there is no end in sight.

There has been a concerning increase in the number of young Australians reporting high levels of psychological distress in the lockdown.

Our research and monitoring service use tells us children (5-11 years), young people (12-15 and 16-25 years), and their parents and carers are experiencing increased levels of distress and adverse mental health impacts.

This is why we have launched #ChatStarter, in partnership with Australia’s national mental health organisations who specialise in supporting children, young people, parents and carers - ReachOut, Butterfly Foundation, Orygen, batyr, headspace, Beyond Blue and Kids Helpline.

This national program was designed with the help of young people and their parents and will run until end of October. #ChatStarter connects, engages and promotes the benefits of supportive conversations with young people and children who are going through a difficult time right now, directing people to a library of useful free evidence based resources and tools, held at the federal government’s popular Head to Health platform.

This first-of-its-kind online program is supported by social networking platforms Facebook and Instagram to reach more Australians each day.

It is also crowdsourced from a number of different contributors on TikTok to raise awareness of the positive difference a conversation can make. #ChatStarter aims to strengthen and build the confidence and knowledge of parents and young people in supporting one another and younger children through uncertain and difficult times. It aims to create opportunities for early intervention by tapping into the in-built capacity of parents and young people to utilise their intuition, love and support to create a safe space to share feelings.

We know such discussions create opportunities for connection that have lasting positive outcomes for mental health. Of course, if a young person or child is in distress and needs clinical support, they are always encouraged to seek professional support.

Join us in our pursuit of #ChatStarter, and let’s help parents and our younger generation realise their inherent ability to provide support to those they care for and prevent them from reaching crisis point.

While our politicians are bickering over border closures and the best way to tackle the Delta outbreaks many Australians are doing quite the opposite, reaching out to their loved ones and communities and sharing messages of love and support at this challenging time.

Students at Chewton Primary School just outside Castlemaine have done just that.

An art installation outside the gates to Chewton Soldier's Memorial Park has brought a smile to locals' faces amid the current lockdown.

Chewton Primary principal Bernadette McKenna said they knew that in this lockdown there were a lot of people in our community who were struggling, either financially or in terms of their mental health.

"We want the community to know that our students are thinking of you and wishing you all the best. We hope people can see the beautiful images and messages from the children in their daily walk and that it brings some joy to their day," she said.

Birds of a feather

A new lunchtime social event starts next week in Kyneton featuring guest speaker Christine Nixon and music by jazz musician Stephen Fewell. ‘Birds of a Feather’ is a quarterly luncheon open to adults who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex.

The initiative of Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s Country LGBTI Inclusive Program will provide a new opportunity for connection and support for all members of the rainbow community, including those living in residential aged care.

“It is well known that older LGBTI people are more likely to be single, live alone, be isolated and distanced from their families, and for older community members living in residential aged care, it can be challenging to live openly and feel accepted and supported,” says Belinda Brain from CLIP. “That’s why the notion of birds of a feather flocking together is representative of the diverse range of sexual and gender orientations, life stages and capabilities found in the LGBTI community, and is at the heart of our luncheons.”

The CLIP team has been championing the health and wellbeing needs of the LGBTI adult community in the Macedon Ranges for the last two years, responding to the need for differentiated support services and providing increased options for people to develop a greater connection to their community and widen their support network. This has become even more important since the beginning of the pandemic

and through periods of lockdown.

“Birds of Feather lunchtime gatherings will be a safe, inclusive place where people can ‘flock together’, be themselves, put on a bit of a fanfare if they want but most importantly, make some new friends.

We believe that regardless of age or life experience there is much to be gained from coming together and enjoying the company of others.” says Nathan Allwood, CLIP Volunteer and luncheon organiser.

Christine Nixon was Australia’s first female police Chief Commissioner and the first Commissioner to have led a police contingent in a public LGBTIQA+ march at Victoria’s Pride March in January 2002.

Now as the 20th anniversary of this landmark display of allyship approaches, Christine will look back on this once controversial but now celebrated moment in her policing career – one that has had lasting impact for the LGBTIQA+ community.

Jazz musician Stephen Fewell is a guitarist, writer and producer with an extensive history of more than 30 years. He will be playing classic songs from the jazz guitar greats of the 1950s and 60s, paying homage to those legends that shaped the golden era of jazz.

He umpired in excess of 600 matches in his cricketing career and earned the respect of his peers, players and the CDCA. He will be sadly missed by us all.

Bruton switch

Greenkeeper Sam Bruton finished duties at Trentham Golf Club on Friday, ahead of taking up a position with Hepburn Shire Council.

Some 13 years ago Bruton began as an apprentice under the guidance at Bob Dobinson at Trentham.

He has been a member of an important team that has presented Trentham as one of the best courses in country Victoria.

Dedicated with a fine work ethic, Bruton has taken pride in his accomplishments at a period where considerable change has taken place.

On behalf of everyone involved with the club, now and in the past, he has been wished good fortune at Hepburn Shire, and in all his future endeavours.

Trentham Football Netball Club is disillusioned by an attack by vandals during the lockdown.

Redbacks’ coaches

With the Riddell League’s 2021 season cancelled, Romsey Football Netball Club is wasting no time in trying to fill coaching positions for 2022.

The Redbacks are seeking coaches for its senior, reserves and under 19.5 football teams, and the A, B, C and U19.5 netball teams.

Applications for all positions will close next Monday, September 13.

Paul Kennedy coached the Redbacks’ senior football side this year, and Kiara Taylor was in charge of the club’s A and C grade netball sides.

The opening round of Gisborne District Cricket Association’s 2021-2022 season is just a few weeks away.

Woodend Cricket Club is keen at welcome any new players who would like to join the club. At the club’s recent annual meeting Ronan Hume was elected for a further term as president. Andrew Price is vice-president, and Steve Rollinson secretary. Warren Else, Jamie Pettigrew, Jess Horan, Ben Thompson and Chris Large are on the general committee.

Club stalwart Barry Mann was confirmed as the club’s latest life member, joining an illustrious band who have previously gained this recognition.

Bill West Riddell District Football Netball League has cancelled its 2021 season, and it was expected to be decided last night (Monday) if premierships would be awarded.

After weeks and months of competition changes and plans being altered to keep football and netball alive across the RDFNL, the death knell arrived with the state government’s announcement regarding a further lockdown extension to September 23 in the metro area.

The Riddell League and seven other metro leagues issued a joint statement advising their 2021 seasons were over, emphasising it was a very difficult decision to make.

RDFNL operations manager Jordan Doyle expressed thanks to “everyone in our community for their tireless work in keeping the flame going for 2021".

“We are already looking forward to our competitions starting in April 2012 for hopefully an uninterrupted season," he said.

“For now, please stay safe.”

Last night (Monday) the league was scheduled to meet with club presidents and secretaries, when among other things, a decision was anticipated on whether the top teams in foot-

ball and netball will be declared as Premiers for 2021, or not.

In late August, the Goulburn Valley Football Netball League made a decision to declare the ladder leaders as premiers, but copped plenty of criticism, and reviewed the situation, settling for acknowledgment of the top teams in each grade as ‘minor premiers’ only.

The adjacent Ballarat Football League has also scrapped its season because of the pandemic lockdown difficulties, and decided the sides on top of each ladder will be recognised as ‘minor premiers for 2021’.

WALLAN DOMINANT As far as football in the RDFNL season was concerned, Wallan was the dominant club, with its teams finishing on top of the ladders in all three grades under the ratio system applied by the league once it was evident the whole home and away fixtures could not be played.

The senior Magpies lost one match, against Macedon early in the season.

In netball, Riddell ended up as minor premiers in A-grade, with Melton Centrals on top in B and C grades, and Woodend-Hesket dominant in the 19&U section.

Kyneton Basketball Association is in an exciting position as domestic competitions grow.

The association has strong representation in the Bendigo Basketball Association, Country Basketball League Men's and Women's teams formed and excellent participation in junior elite player pathways. The KBA is a volunteer-run organisation and is always looking for people to take part in the committee and help shape the future of the basketball association.

All executive positions (president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary) are vacated and open for nominations. General committee nominations are always welcome.

The association is looking for people with great organisational and/or computer skills to help out. You don't need to have basketball skills to have an impact on the association.

To help grow programs so more kids can take to the court, the association also needs assistance with coaching, scoring, coordinators and general help.

The association's AGM will be held via Zoom on Thursday September 9 at 7.30pm.

The spectre of COVID-19 has loomed large since the Delta variant began to show its dangerous transition abilities.

Wallan appears to be “moving on” announcing at the weekend that senior non-playing coach David Nolan has been re-appointed for 2022.

The Magpies’ committee expressed confidence the club would secure the 2022 senior premiership, recognising the senior side had improved considerably since being runner-up to Rupertswood in 2019.

No play took place in 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic.

Nolan said he was honoured and excited to be coach again after six years at Magpieland.

“Hopefully we can break the club’s premiership drought in 2022.”

He said the performances in 2021 indicated the future of the club is very bright and there are some exciting times ahead.

Wallan has also decided to field a women’s team in the Northern Football League next season, with coaching applications closing on Wednesday, September 22.

Bendigo and MCDFNL remain ‘alive’

The Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League and Bendigo Football Netball League executives both met late last month with the purpose of outlining a way forward for the remainder of their 2021 seasons, providing they can return to football and netball.

The MCDFNL executive has determined the deadline for their season is the weekend of October 2 and 3 and the BFNL had determined their end date is the weekend of September 24-26.

Both leagues have drawn up various scenarios for when and if restrictions are lifted and will be ready to launch straight into their designated finals format.

How time flies! Six months ago Liam Howley Racing was launched and has become firmly established at a state-of-the-art training complex in the Macedon Ranges at Pipers Creek.

“Spring is the best time of the year (from a racing viewpoint),” meticulous trainer Liam Howley said yesterday.

Howley and his valued staff were buoyed when ultraconsistent galloper Bainbridge broke through for his first city win last Wednesday. A city first for the stable.

And Howley is very pleased with the progress made by several extremely well bred two-year-olds heading for the Inglis Ready2Run sales later this month.

On Friday the unraced colts by top stallions Tornado and Street Boss, were taken to Seymour racecourse for familiarisation in preparation for a ‘breeze up’ at the same venue leading up to the sales.

“They’ve all improved since they arrived here,” the trainer said.

Miranda Park Stud at Hesket and Sweetnam Stud at Nagambie are among those being supportive of what is taking place at Pipers Creek.

Howley has no doubt the move made to establish the training complex in the Macedon Ranges is heading in the right direction. An added advantage is the proximity of the Kyneton racecourse.

There are presently 28 gallopers in work at Pipers Creek, and Howley is pleased with the support shown by new and longer term owners, and welcomes further enquiries (Contact him on 0402 133 958).

On the racetrack Bainbridge has proved to be the stable star with three wins and three placings for Howley, who was confident the six-year-old would develop into a very handy middle-distance performer ahead of his effortless debut win for the stable over 1715m at Geelong on June 21.

“He’s a really tough horse, as shown at Sandown last week,” the trainer said.

Vastly experienced jockey Brett Prebble had no hesitation in taking Bainbridge to the front and his staying ability was put to the test in the straight. The $3.80 chance fought on strongly to win by 0.2 length from Marchons Ensemble.

VALUE OF DEDICATED STAFF “I’ve learnt you are only as good as the people you put around you,” Howley said, in directing praise towards those in the industry who work for him.

“They’re an exciting group of people who are willing to learn, and they have a real passion and energy for the game.

“I’m privileged to have this exciting group of people.

They’re like family.

“They all come from nearby centres (Kyneton, Romsey, Kilmore and Gisborne) and I see them as core personnel for the next 10 to 15 years.

He made particular reference to Ben Plant, Joe Carbone, Danica Munro, Kristian Fenwick and Trent Germain.

The indoor and outdoor facilities at the Pipers Creek farm property are first class, and provide access to undulating tracks and plenty of room in the surrounding areas.

Racing appears to have survived better than many other sports, but what happens over the Spring Carnival, with COVID lurking and lockdown still in place, is yet to be determined.
