Farm build rights gone?

Landowners in the Macedon Ranges will lose their existing rights to build a dwelling on 40ha or more in the Farm Zone under a state government proposal to protect farmland.

It is one of the controversial elements in Planning for Melbourne's Green Wedges and Agricultural Land Consultation Paper aimed to protect agricultural land within 100km of Melbourne.

Macedon Ranges farmers last week spoke out over the move to scrap buildrights which they argued would significantly devalue their properties.

Kyneton-based town planner Sharon Macaulay said loss of the right to build in the Farm Zone over 40ha, was a "disincentive that might affect farm finances and retirement and succession planning and reduce the capacity of farm management

and upkeep".

"If introduced, all Farming Zone landowners within 100km of Melbourne will then be at the mercy of councils to decide if their application to build a farm dwelling is worthy of support," she said.

"The consequences of these stateproposed provisions are not fair to farm landowners and risks a loss of investment in our farming areas where incentives to

live on-farm should be provided."

Removing the over 40ha build-rights in Farm Zone would not remove the landowner's rights to apply for a permit to build but it would come under critical assessment and may be subject to various conditions.

The state government's paper says the move intends to create better planning outcomes.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has defended numerous decisions on building in the farm zone at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in recent years with differing outcomes.

"It's been a long-standing complex issue in the Macedon Ranges for a long time," Mayor Jennifer Anderson told the Express.

"If you look at all the decisions that have come before the council and VCAT there have been a lot of inconsistencies."

Macedon Ranges Shire Council approved a submission to the paper, supporting the removal of the right to build in the Farm Zone over 40ha, at its council meeting last week.

Councillors deliberated several issues raised within the paper including caravan and camping use, high risk bushfire zones, host farms and challenged the loss of third party rights.

Cr Anderson said the intent of the council's submission was to protect agricultural land and stop a proliferation of dwellings where there should be farming pursuits.

"We do not want to inhibit good practice agricultural pursuits. With climate change, there is going to be less and less land available for agricultural use. Macedon Ranges is in a unique location," she said.

"Unfortunately with this document it's very hard to know what the ultimate outcome will be. A lot more detail is required to understand the full implications of the state government's paper."

Farm build-rights is just one of the issues in the state government’s Planning for Melbourne’s Green Wedges and Agricultural Land Consultation Paper which people can make submissions to until February 5.

Not all councillors will be involved in the initial assessment of applicants for Macedon Ranges Shire Council's next chief executive officer.

Last week councillors voted in a three-member recruitment sub-committee, comprising Crs Jennifer Anderson, Annette Death and Rob Guthrie, to manage the first stages.

Incoming chair of the Audit and Risk Committee Peter Matthews was appointed the group's independent probity officer.

The sub-committee will be entrusted with narrowing the field of shortlisted candidates from a refined long-list report as determined by council's appointed consultant Omera Partners.

Deputy Mayor Mark Ridgeway said a small sub-committee with representatives from all three council wards was more efficient for narrowing the field and that all councillors would participate in the final interviews and selection of the preferred candidate.

"I'm of the view that when it comes to these committees, the smaller the committee the better," he said. "I have every confidence in the people I've recommended."

Cr Geoff Neil was the only councilor to vote against the move and stated he did not have confidence in the process. He expressing strong views on an all-councillor approach from beginning to end.

"This is the most important decision we will ever make in our four years (and) you've decided to belittle it to three councillors… I am, not devastated, just grossly disappointed," he said.

In a report to council, Omera Partners stated it was uncommon for all councillors to be involved in the shortlisting process as it presented challenges, particularly around scheduling needs of individuals involved.

The same three councillors on the recruitment sub-committee also form the CEO appraisal committee, appointed in November for a 12-month period.

The CEO position is expected to attract a high level of interest. In 2017, Macedon Ranges' CEO position received about 140 applications and enquiries.

Hanging Rock Cricket Club targeted exceeds any minor break-ins that have occurred there before.

Star pickets are thought to have been used to drive holes into walls. It is not known how many individuals were involved in the night-time rampage.

“This is disappointing, but I’m optimistic of being able to continue playing cricket at Hanging Rock well into the future,” the president said.

The club appreciates police efforts, and also acknowledged the support provided

by Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

While the clubrooms are out of action, the shire has delivered temporary toilets which will enable the cricket season to continue.

Nabbed in Malmsbury

Warblers are back

A 51-year-old man from Craigieburn has had his Toyota SUV impounded after being intercepted in Malmsbury on Saturday. Macedon Ranges HIghway Patrol checks indicated the man’s licence was suspended at the time of driving.

His vehicle was impounded for 30 days, and he will be summoned for driving while suspended and stating false name and address.

“If you can speak you can sing” is the catch-cry of the Woodend Warblers, a friendly community choir which sings each Wednesday night. After the festive season break, the Warblers hold their first session for 2021 at the Norma Richardson Hall tomorrow (Wednesday) evening.

Players, parents and supporters of Hanging Rock Cricket Club have been left devastated by a break-in at their clubrooms during or leading into the early hours of Australia Day. “Ferocious vandalism” was how club president Todd Place described the attack.

There was extensive damage to equipment and fixtures, walls were graffitied and various items stolen.

The full extent of what took place at the Hanging Rock Reserve that night is still emerging, with Kyneton police investigating.

Help stop fruit fly

Council is calling for residents to act now to help prevent a widespread outbreak of Queensland fruit fly (QFF), following reports of the pests in Castlemaine, Harcourt and Harcourt North. Please check monitoring traps and gardens for the pest. They are small brown flies with yellow markings.

The Castlemaine SES unit was kept busy for much of Friday as rain bucketed down causing headaches for some homeowners and testing some of the town's street drains to their limits.

By mid-afternoon, Friday, a total 25.6 mm of rainfall had already been recorded at the Bureau of Meteorology's Castlemaine Prison weather station making it the locality's highest daily rainfall total for the year to date - as the rain persisted.

Some local residents reported recording more than 50 mm in their gauges by midday, Friday.

The widespread soaking was good news for many of the state's farmers, rain tank owners and gardeners but not so good for Castlemaine residents who were forced to call on the local volunteer SES unit for help with building damage caused by the deluge.

"We've had nine jobs since midnight," busy Castlemaine SES deputy controller Daniel Bone told the Express, Friday afternoon.

"They've mostly been water through people's roofs.

"We've had three vehicles going out and responding.

"Lots of people have had damage to their ceilings with water running through."

Castlemaine's St Mary's Primary School was among those requiring some assistance.

"We used some sandbagging and a submersible pump to clear water there," Mr Bone said.

Street drains in some parts of the town - like Castlemaine's Parker Street - were clearly at capacity.

The soaking and associated thunderstorm activity was widespread across the state including the metropolitan area.

"Tropical moisture is feeding into a low pressure trough," Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said on Friday.

"That's why we're seeing such high rainfall rates."

The BOM was predicting a 50 percent chance of more rain for the area today, but diminishing to just 20 percent for each of tomorrow and Thursday.

Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network is urging Agriculture Minister Mary-Anne Thomas to take the state’s increased kangaroo harvesting kill quota and extra roo meat off the table for Victorians.

On Thursday, Ms Thomas announced the Victoria’s Kangaroo Harvesting Program quota in 2021 would increase by 37,780 kangaroos on last year to 95,680.

Through this program the state government will allow extra meat to be made available for human consumption - not just for pet food as is currently the case - and will look for opportunities to export the skins.

Ms Thomas attributed the dramatic change to a 2020 kangaroo survey which she says estimates “the current kangaroo population at almost two million across Victoria - up almost 40 per cent compared to 2018”.

Australia Day Honours Service spanning decades

Honour for orthoptist

Terence Larkins has been honoured for his dedicated service to the community and local government which has extended over five decades.

The Gisborne resident was appointed an officer of the Order of Australia in last week's Australia Day honours.

His involvement in local government has included work in Papua New Guinea, capital cities councils, Victorian local government and through policy development with the Victorian Local Governance Association and Australian Labor Party.

"A highlight includes my international experience (International City Managers) which demonstrated that local challenges at home were replicated in many other countries," Mr Larkins said.

"But the really satisfying involvement was with the community in which I worked and the special people with whom I worked."

Mr Larkins is the former board chairman of Western Water, former Melbourne Water board director, and a foundation board member of Macedon Ranges Health (now Benatas) He is a current board member of the committee of management of Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre and Mount Macedon ANZAC Day Dawn Service Committee.

Mr Larkins began his time with the former Gisborne Shire Council in 1977, where he became shire secretary and then chief executive before retiring in 1996.

"The amalgamation of local government has been a great success in the Macedon Ranges for strategic planning and land use management," he said.

"The community, however, has lost the close contact they had with their elected representatives. It's "them" and "us" now unfortunately for many residents."

Marion Rivers has drawn eyes to the field of orthoptics through her Australia Day honour.

The Gisborne South resident has been appointed a member (AM) in the general division of the Order of Australia for significant service to eye health care, and to the community.

Her life work has dealt in diagnosing and treating irregularities of the eyes, such as eye movement, and how the eyes work together.

She said professional work with children and their families has been one of the most enjoyable and rewarding parts of her work.

"When you've got a lot of knowledge about eyes and how they function, you can help put peoples' minds at ease and help them with their journey," she said.

"This is something I have always really enjoyed about my work. It has always been a pleasure to work with children and their families."

She has been a consultant paediatric orthoptist for Vision Australia and hospitals in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Another highlight from her career was providing in-service training for staff, Nguyen Dinh Chieu School (vision impaired school) in Vietnam.

"I had the chance to reassess some of the students while I was there to see if they could return to mainstream schooling and had some success in achieving that," she said.

Ms Rivers is a Fred Hollows Foundation supporter and has assisted with community eye-screening in remote areas of Western Australia.

She has held several titles on Orthoptics Australia federal council (formerly Orthoptic Association of Australia), including presi-

Mr Larkins thanked the community for its support over the years.

Australia Day Honours Environmental leader celebrated

Gisborne firefighter Ian Hay was honoured to receive the award.

Fire Service Medal honour Gisborne firefighter Ian Hay has been recognised for 43 years of Country Fire Authority service with the prestigious Australian Fire Service Medal as part of the 2021 Australia Day Honours List.

Ian began his volunteer firefighting career in 1975 at Bullengarook Fire Brigade, before transferring to Gisborne Fire Brigade.

He said he was “extremely humbled” to receive the honour.”When I started at Bullengarook Brigade, I did not anticipate my involvement would have led me this far,” Ian said.

“I have met so many amazing people over the course of my CFA journey and looking back, I am grateful for every interaction.”

Ian has served as brigade secretary and

represented the Gisborne brigade as the Mount Macedon Group Communications Officer. He moved up the ranks to become Group Officer and now continues to serve as a senior firefighter, regularly attending emergency incidents.

He has maintained his operational qualifications as a Level 2 Incident Controller, a Level 3 Operations Officer and as a Divisional Commander and Sector Commander. Throughout his volunteer career, Ian has become highly respected by all levels of CFA. “I’ve formed lots of friendships across CFA. I can go anywhere in Victoria and bump into someone I have met during my time as a member,” he said.

“CFA is a family and I am happy to be a part of it.”

Amanda Gauci hopes her Australia honour will inspire greater care of Macedon Ranges’ unique flora and fauna.

She has been named Macedon Ranges Citizen of the Year for her dedication to improving the local environment, community involvement and tireless work as a registered wildlife carer in Gisborne.

Ms Gauci said her work had been driven by “the need to elevate the essential needs of the Ranges beyond exploitation and being taken for granted”.

“My role as a wildlife carer has been confronting and I am fearful we are not achieving enough to override the barrage of brutality that is occurring at a rate now far greater than natural recovery,” she said.

“Anytime I look into the eyes of an animal I couldn’t think of anything more disturbing than betraying it. Australian animals have a unique reliance and connection to their vegetation, this understanding needs to be realised and respected by current Australians.

“Urgent help and consideration beyond exploitery pursuit, deliberate hindrance to community compassion and humanitarian effect are required from a co-ordinated government that wishes to see a wonderful future for our state.”

As one of four founding members of Federation for Environment and Horticulture in the Macedon Ranges, Ms Gauci has been involved in important work to secure biolinks, or nature corridors, for safe movement of wildlife between different.

She is the current president of both Friends of Gisborne Botanic Gardens and Friends of Daly Nature Reserve, and leads nature walks for local primary school groups to help educate the next generation.

Her passion for the need for clean waterways has forged strong partnerships with both Melbourne Water and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Elders.

“People should appreciate the Ranges and have their daily actions add to betterment of their input. Caring is the easiest way to be Australian,” she said.

Australia Day Honours Young citizen shines Macedon Ranges Young Citizen of the Year Miranda Johnson-Jones is a youth advocate targeting improved services for regional mental health.

Miranda’s contribution has made inroads in evaluating current rural sexual health campaigns and effectiveness within the community, and developing creative campaigns for sexual health in rural and regional areas using social media.

She has worked in the Macedon Ranges Youth Ambassadors Program with local MP Mary-Anne Thomas, delivering specific and direct youth activities and campaigns in the Macedon Ranges.

Miranda’s dedication has manifested in the release of a youth social awareness campaign regarding sexual assault and rape titled ‘It’s Time to Talk’ which premiered in 2020.

This project aims to improve health literacy and awareness surrounding gender equality and relationships in the local area.

Community Achievement Award

Kyneton Agricultural Society The Kyneton Agricultural Society members both past and present have ensured that the grand tradition of a local agricultural show is not only alive but thriving in the Macedon Ranges.

The show attracts in excess of 5000 people annually and about 100 volunteers are involved in bringing the show to life each year with preparation beginning in February, and continuing steadily up until show day in November.

In 2021, the Kyneton Agricultural Society will be holding its 160th show.

It was her background in primary school education, passion for children’s literature and thirst for history drove her to buy Riddells Creek’s famous ‘Dromkeen’ property with her

husband and sister-in-law in 2013.

Ms Joiner connects accomplished writers and illustrators with visitors, and enjoys sharing the history of Dromkeen and the literary treasures that have found their way to the property in recent years.

Dromkeen’s main art gallery is a magnificent space for exhibitions and many local

artists have benefited from Ms Joiner showcasing their work.

She has established popular monthly storytime sessions, children’s holiday workshops and adult workshops.

She also assists with learning opportunities in a range of creative pursuits including blacksmithing and weaving.

Summer Living in Woodend A group of local residents who work in emergency management roles and volunteer in community groups came together to provide a community conversation space that focused on living in Woodend in summer.

Local groups and organisations like the Woodend Library, Woodend Neighbourhood House, local churches, Macedon Ranges Shire Council, Red Cross and the CFA were also engaged with a focus on what would happen if Woodend were affected by an emergency event. The results of the conversations became invaluable during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Boost to local food relief

Kyneton Community House is increasing its food relief meal production and delivery for those struggling to meet needs of themselves and their families through the state's Community Food Relief Fund.

The community house has received a $60,560 grant expected to significantly boost the capacity of Kyneton Community House's Food for Good Kyneton program.

Community house director Claire Rawlinson said Food for Good had a specific intent of providing much needed food relief long-term to vulnerable local residents.

"Kyneton Community House could not be more grateful for the opportunity to make all this happen - it will really benefit vulnerable people in Kyneton well into the future," she said.

Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas met with members of community house to announce the news last week.

"Kyneton Community House does incredible work for our community, and this grant means they can continue that vital support for those who may need a little extra support," she said.

Kyneton resident Matthew King is calling for upgrades to Kyneton’s council-run gym.

Kyneton residents are pushing for upgrades to the town's councilrun aquatic centre gym to improve the layout and lessen wait times for machines.

Gym member Matthew King said the outdated equipment is uninspiring and fellow users supported his appeal for the gym to be "brought into the current century".

"I am so uninspired and unmotivated by the dated strength training equipment, and lack of cardio equipment," he said.

"I have a disability and exercise is rather important for me to stay functional and active. There's only two crosstrainers, so if they're being used I have to wait, as I have limitations on what I can use."

The 36-year-old has condition known as adrenoleukodystrophy which he helps manage with regular exercise but may need to consider other options for his workout.

Mr King has put forward suggestions for more modern equipment, a specialised cardio area and new layout that he feels would create a more user-friendly zone.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council last implemented a new gym layout and upgraded cardio equipment in 2019 after consultation with gym members, but welcomed further ideas for change.

The last upgrade included a functional fitness area, increased strength training area, power rack and improved internal pathways.

MRSC's Director Assets and Operations, Shane Walden, said council officers continually review and update the facility asset register to identify and plan for fitness equipment requiring maintenance or replacement but the global pandemic had presented challenges.

"The global pandemic has impacted our ability to engage with our members regarding the current gym layout and fitness equipment offered within the gyms," he said.

"As the fitness centre has returned to normal operations, and a large portion of our valued members return from the service suspension or the holiday period, we will be implementing a member engagement process to support the prioritisation of new equipment and future improvements to the fitness centre."

All members are expected to be notified of this process in February and are encouraged to take part.

Ambulance Victoria funding will see a Peak Period Unit deployed in Gisborne from next month as part of the state government's 2020/21 Budget commitment.

The Peak Period Unit will mean an extra crew comprising two advanced life support paramedics on shift for up to 12 hours during the branches' busiest times.

The initiative has been brought forward from the original 2022/23 date.

The conversation is set for 6pm in The Tap Room at The Mill and will primarily focus on the internationally successful Land Trust model as a way to decouple the expense of land from the cost of buying a house.

Featuring a line-up of guest speakers, Thursday evening's conversation is being presented by Mount Alexander Community Land Limited, a not-for-profit organisation and one of the few land trust entities in Australia.

"Our keynote speaker is Derek Mortimer who is a not-for-profit lawyer and Community Land Trust specialist," says MACLL chair Doug Falconer who, with partner Jacqueline

Brodie-Hanns, owns Castlemaine's Shedshaker brewery and The Taproom venue.

"We'll also have other guest speakers with expertise in social and public housing and also in private development approaches to housing affordability."

Doug says the not-for-profit Land Trust model has proven successful abroad and he is a firm believer that it's only a matter of time before the model will gain a foothold here as part of the housing affordability equation.

"Land Trusts are very successful in the US, Britain, Canada and Europe but they have so far not had the same success in Australia because of our unique land legal system," he says.

"We think it's only a matter of time before the authorities will recognise the value of the model and give it support.

"It's a great model and why wouldn't you

want to help people own a home."

Jacqueline Brodie-Hanns is secretary of MACLL and says there are several local property owners open to incorporating the model on their land.

"And we are keen to inspire others to consider this approach," she says.

"Given the continuing increase in housing prices coupled with the ongoing migration of people from other parts of the country into our region, housing affordability is at a crisis point.

"There are a lot of local initiatives bring pursued to tackle housing in a myriad of ways, from tiny house projects to respite accommodation alongside increased state funding for public and social housing."

Macedon Ranges Shire Council's decision to refuse the extension of a permit for 14 double-storey homes in a flood-prone area of Woodend has not changed since a rescission motion that brought it back before council last week lapsed.

The developer sought a twoyear extension on the permit for 2-4 Davey Street, which was rejected unchallenged at council's December 16 meeting.

At last Wednesday's meeting, Cr Janet Pearce, who lodged the rescission motion, explained that leading into the December meeting there were a lot of requests for information and documents, and questions were asked, with information still being collated close to that meeting.

"I felt this had maybe not been the optimal situation for councillors," she said.

After assessing further information sought, Cr Pearce chose not to move the motion.

Phone scam warning

A Woodend resident is warning of scammers claiming to be associated with the Do Not Call Register following her own experience last week.

The resident revealed she had been targeted in the caller's bid to access personal information and was initially convinced the caller was genuine.

"It's a bit disturbing - it was very smooth in the beginning," the resident told the Express."They were very convincing. I just couldn't believe that I gave them the information that I did."

The caller said they would assist the resident in joining the Do Not Call Register and then proceeded to ask for more details until she became uncomfortable and hang up.

The resident was contacted moments later by a different caller claiming to be offering the same service, and who told the resident "do not hang up".

Normally wary of strange calls, the resident said she was disturbed by the lengths the callers went to to try and gain her personal information. She believed the phone number used to contact her was not international.

ScamWatch issued warnings for similar phone scam incidents that occurred in 2018 and 2019.

The body warns against giving personal details over the phone and advises people to be wary of unsolicited calls seeking information.

If you have doubts that the call is genuine, you should hang up and call back the organisation using a trusted phone number.

Don t get the dodo ...

Eve Lamb Talented Castlemaine artist Linda Newton has turned her abilities to creating a new card game with a twist aimed at preventing a concerning decline in bird species.

Newton is well known for her idiosyncratic bird art which frequently delights visitors to her local studio gallery at Castlemaine's Mill complex.

Now, driven by a deep concern about reported declines in the creatures she loves, she's created 'don't get the dodo' all ages card game to help raise awareness about the risk of bird species loss and extinction.

Each playing card in the pack features one of her character-packed bird illustrations including a focus on locally occurring species.

"They can be played to any level with adults or little tackers so you can play a simple memory or snap game or you can play it cut-throat - and if you get the dodo you're out," the artist says of the unique locally printed packs.

Developed over the last 18 months they feature about 20 different bird species - including the famed dodo - which Linda says is readily recognised as a universal symbol of extinction.

While those who seek it will find a serious message in the cards, they may also simply be taken on face-value offering players some artistic and fact-filled fun.

"They include educational environmental facts and they lean towards being cartoonish illustrations," says Linda who is particularly concerned about habitat loss.

"According to David Attenborough 70 percent of birds worldwide are on the way out."

While the emphasis is on having some cardplaying fun, Linda's hoping that those who pick up a pack may be motivated to play their hand in helping to conserve our feathered friends.

"If there's one single thing we could all do it's to plant indigenous trees," the artist says.

Next up she's planning to turn her hand to developing and illustrating a similar pack themed around our native macropods.

Help at hand for young learner drivers

Romsey history captured A book described as a 'must read' for locals and visitors alike was officially launched at a well attended gathering in Romsey on Friday evening.

ROMSEY - An Historical Guide, is the latest publication of Romsey, Lancefield and Districts Historical Society, in conjunction with award-winning historian Dr Fay Woodhouse, who spent many months compiling a wealth of information and many previously unseen photographs depicting over fifty buildings and landmarks in Romsey, documenting the history of families behind them.

It is 160 years since the township was gazetted, and the book is an exploration of the built form and

Learning to drive a car is a milestone for most young people.

However, some learner drivers in may face significant barriers to achieving the necessary 120 hours of supervised driving practice.

To remove some of those challenges, CHIRP Community Health in Castlemaine is offering the TAC L2P program which is funded by TAC and managed by the Department of Transport.

It is run locally with the support of CHIRP volunteers to assist young people who have limited access to a supervising driver or suitable vehicle.

After some pandemic-related disruptions last year, the program is back in full swing, with trained volunteer mentors waiting to be matched.

Castlemaine's Lucian Lessonja-Esposito previously had no one to teach him to drive and turned to the L2P program for help.

"Having my licence will make me much less reliant on the train system to get to work and uni. It takes me about an hour on public transport," he said.

The TAC L2P Program improves road safety and safe driving practices and for many young learners it leads to education, employment, and the sense of achievement and independence that comes with a drivers licence.

COVID-19 protocols and procedures are in place to keep learners and mentors safe.

CHIRP's L2P Coordinator, Lisa Cavallaro said now is a great time to make a start.

"The start of the new year is a great time to join the program and to work on building up the hours," she said.

A driver crashed into wire rope carriers on the Calder Freeway south of Kyneton.

A driver of a luxury sedan escaped injury when his car collided with wire rope barriers on the Calder Freeway south of Kyneton last Tuesday.

The crash occurred around 4am in heavy rain, with the car taking out around 50 metres of the barriers before coming to a stop.

The wire cables initially prevented the driver from escaping, however, he was assisted out of the vehicle by SES volunteers from Woodend who were quickly on-scene Carlsruhe CFA also attended with brigades from Kyneton and Woodend stood down while enroute. One northbound lane was closed for around an hour.

Solar boost for Ranges

Volunteer groups in Lancefield and Riddells Creek are among those set to save on power bills by installing solar PV systems with funding from the state government's Solar on Public Buildings Program.

Lancefield Mechanics Institute, Lancefield Park Recreation Reserve and Riddells Creek Mechanics Institute will directly benefit from the program with substantially reduced energy costs for their facilities assisting them to remain viable into the future.

Lancefield Mechanics Institute Committee of Management president John Sevenson welcomed the announcement last week.

"The committee is very excited about this success and so grateful to all those who helped put together our application, especially the Renewable Energy Action Group team, part of the Macedon Ranges Sustainable Group," he said.

There has been a high level of interest in the program from eligible committees in the Macedon Ranges since it opened in August, with successful committees being selected through a robust assessment process following an initial expression of interest.

Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas said the successful applicants for the region was a terrific outcome for the community, the environment and the hardworking volunteer committees.

"Local committees of management on public land are the backbone of small communities, which often have limited capacity to raise funds for their venues.

This initiative is not only helping these committees to survive, but to thrive in the future," she said.

The program will provide local jobs with accredited regional contractors to be appointed from a panel of approved providers.

The first-round of projects will enable work at selected sites to get underway, starting with an energy audit and electrical upgrades if necessary ahead of the solar installation.

An additional list of approved sites will be released later this year, with the program to run for three years until 2023.

Military grants

Funding is now available for projects that preserve local military history and honour service personnel through the Federal Government's Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program.

The program provides up to $10,000 for local and community-based projects and activities and up to $150,000 for significant projects and activities. Applications close on February 11.

Former Castlemaine Technical College students can step back in time at the school's annual reunion later this month.

The Castlemaine Technical College Past Students' Association will be holding its 84th annual reunion on Sunday February 21, and invites past students and teachers to attend the celebration.

CTCPSA president Bill Sikora said there would be some changes this year with COVID-19 affecting may aspects of everyday life.

"Given the uncertainty around what COVID rules will be in play looking ahead the association has decided that they will not run a reunion in the same format as recent years," he said.

"We invite past students, teachers and their families to participate in a less formal self-catered reunion lunch at the Music Centre at the Castlemaine Secondary College Etty Street

Campus (site of the former Castlemaine Technical College) on Sunday, February 21 from 11am onwards," he said.

Attendees are urged to bring their own picnic or a barbecue lunch and drinks. Limited barbecue facilities are available.

Mr Sikora said the reunion was always a wonderful opportunity for past students to catch up with former mentors and classmates and reminisce on their school days in Castlemaine.

The event will include memorabilia displays including photographs, badges and uniforms.

"If you know of a past student or teacher of the college that may like to attend please invite them. New members are always welcome," Mr Sikora said.

Western Water is 'smoking' its sewer network to detect any cross-connections to their system, as part of its ongoing investment program.

Cross-connections exist when a pipe is incorrectly connected to the Western Water system, allowing stormwater to enter the sewer network.

This can cause major problems for their infrastructure and is particularly stressful to the system during periods of high rainfall where it can cause pipe blockages and sewer spills.

The innovative 'smoking' technology involves blowing nontoxic smoke into the network, which passes through sewer pipes before it eventually evaporates. If a pipe is cross-connected to the sewer network, the smoke escapes and becomes visible in the air, alerting Western Water to the incorrect connection.

Men s Shed move Woodend Men’s Shed has moved to a new location.

The Woodend Men's Shed is back up and running after a disrupted year in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Now operating out of their new premises at 988 Black Forest Drive (the former Black Forest sawmill site), the shed members are looking forward to an enjoyable and productive 2021.

After begining a move from their previous location at Bupa Woodend in March 2020, members found themselves unable to access their new premises due to lockdown, but by November small numbers were able to meet to start the process of getting things in place and working in time for the new year.

Vic-president Kevin Davis said much effort has gone into making sure the shed is a COVID-safe space and there is ample room for both activities and social interaction.

"The Woodend Men's Shed prides

itself on being a place where men of all ages can meet for a cuppa and a yarn with other men from a variety of backgrounds," he said.

"There is opportunity to learn new skills, pass on old skills to others and contribute to community endeavours at the same time as enjoying the company of other men."

Huntly Barton, Kyneton I object to planning application 2019/571-572-573 on Traffic and Water grounds. This application will see more Housing, service station including McDonald's fast food and a Bunning's Hardware.

Enticing vehicles off the freeway for fuel, fast food and hardware is likely to complicate an emerging industrial area.

With one bus line recently moving and muted that Organs will also move to the industrial area. Both bus lines will impact on Edgecombe road and street at drop off and pick up times to all the schools in that area, creating more bedlam than now.

Livestock trucks delivering to Hardwick's or the sale yards, trucks servicing business such as Perry's, Bridgestone, Central Vic Sheds, Elders (just to name a few) will make them question why they moved to this location.

We are trying to create an industrial area which relieves congestion in the town and allows for easy movement off the freeway that services the industrial area.

This development has the potential to congest a developing industrial area and could have drastic effect on existing businesses within the town.

This development will provide toilet facilities for all their customers this will greatly impact on the Kyneton Reclamation Plant, run by Coliban Water.

This plant has failed continually since 2007 and nearly failed again even after they doubled their storage capacity late last year.

Coliban Water has been charged by the EPA on 11 counts of pollution to the Campaspe River in 2019, the court has yet to deal with this. These charges directly relate to CW's inability to cope with the volumes of human waste.

Our town has a history of failed industrial areas, we recently lost a viable business in Latrobe Street that was once designated an industrial area.

Coliban Water has polluted the Campaspe River from the dump zone to Lake Eppalock, destroying the biodiversity of the river. Platypus are now on the endangered list.

Be reminded councillors and planners, this is our town and we cannot be bullied by monopolistic conglomerates. Get it right.

I encourage all affected landowners in the Farming Zone within 100km of Melbourne to take time to read and consider the potential impacts of the amendments proposed in the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning's Green Wedges and Agricultural Land consultation paper and, if motivated, lodge a submission

by February 5 via planning.vic.gov.au As noted by Macedon Ranges Shire Council in its submission: "a wide range of agricultural enterprises can occur in a variety of circumstances. These circumstances include varying land parcel size favouring various forms of agricultural production.

For example, broad acre dryland cropping favours very large land parcels, whereas niche or boutique production favours smaller land parcels."

It is, therefore, a concern that there is support for the proposal to amend the subdivision provisions of the Farming Zone sets out to "prohibit the creation of a lot for an existing dwelling that is smaller than the minimum lot size within 100 km of Melbourne".

It is also a concern that there is support for the state's proposal to remove existing as-of-right dwelling land use opportunities in the Farming Zone for land within 100km of Melbourne.

Further, the state proposes to "reduce

subdivision potential by requiring parliamentary ratification of proposals to subdivide land into more lots or smaller lots than currently provided for in the planning scheme in the Farming Zone and Rural Activity Zone within 100km of Melbourne".

Along with MRSC, parts of Mount Alexander Shire and other councils are included in the 100km radius and thus affected.

If introduced into the Planning Scheme or Planning and Environment Act, all Farming Zone landowners within 100km of Melbourne will then be at the mercy of councils to decide if their application to build a farm dwelling is worthy of support.

In my opinion, the consequences of these state-proposed provisions are not fair to farm landowners and risks a loss of investment in our farming areas where incentives to live on-farm should be provided.

The state's proposals on pages 38 and 40 of its report are a disincentive that might affect farm finances and retirement and succession planning and, if so, reduce the capacity of farm management and upkeep, all of which require substantial planning, foresight and investment often across generations.

I do not believe the local council's or the state planning department's positions on these three matters of concern reflect the views or needs of affected farming constituents. I don't have space to address any positive aspects about the consultation paper and I will leave that to others.

Utterly dismayed Neil & Deanna Buck, Maldon As members of MAAW we are utterly dismayed to see the conflicts within the organisation and related stakeholders being played out in the public arena.

From its clear initial purpose and widespread community support to provide a local animal welfare service, sadly, the organisation now appears deeply divided about how to consolidate and grow the service.

From the media coverage a central issue at dispute is the establishment of a low-cost veterinary clinic at the shelter with the current committee rejecting a government grant of $91,000 for this purpose.

To win a government grant is one thing, to reject it is almost unheard of. No doubt the government did some due diligence in assessing the proposal's viability.

We find it hard to understand then how the committee can now decide to go against its own organisation's successful proposal.

The committee argues in their advertisement (Midland Express, January 12) that there is a shortage of vets to service the clinic yet in the same edition a wellrespected local vet wrote supporting the proposal and pleading with the committee to reconsider their decision.

A known stress for vets is their inability to respond adequately to financially disadvantaged pet owners. The Committee notes various perceived financial costs but does not seem to even consider how these might be met by sources other than the op-shop, such as other grants or even community generosity, given the community support shown in establishing MAAWS. There is no doubt merit in both sides of the argument and we are clearly not privy to all the facts. But what does seem lacking is any process to constructively address the differences of opinion.

Rather it seems views are becoming increasingly polarised and personal which is no basis for sound decision-making.

Perhaps money and energy may be better spent on some external mediation or some form of professional consultation on a management structure able to develop a sustainable business model and get all the relevant stakeholders back to a unified purpose around the core business of securing the animal welfare needs of the local community.

MAAW matter of urgency Hans Paas, Castlemaine.

I write in relation to the 'Open Letter 'about MAAW (Express, January 26) which clearly states a long list of concerns about the behaviour of the current committee, just one of which should prompt immediate action:"The committee using the claim of 'private and confidential' to avoid disclosure and transparency.....".

In a community not-for-profit such as MAAW nothing should ever be private and the only things that should be confidential are in relation to someone's privacy or during (but not after) any commercial negotiation, such as letting contracts or purchasing assets.

Alas, in my, now rather long experience with government and community organisations, it is almost never the case that when there is a high level of secrecy there is not also a significant level of wrong doing.

An AGM must be called as a matter of urgency.

Passionate about animal welfare Helen Johnston, MAAW Volunteer Castlemaine I write regarding the large advertisement in last week's Express (Jan 26). There is no affiliation with MAAW. Those responsible are not MAAW! The facts referred to are far out of order.

As an op shop volunteer I can assure those who read this that we volunteer our time and efforts because we care about animal welfare! Why else would we be there?

The op shop runs as happy team on all counts - no dissension whatsoever, and no problems. Shelter, problems and dissension aplenty!

Our committee do their job with consideration and diligence under duress due to whoever this group choose to call themselves. Who indeed are they other than instigators of unwarranted criticisms and vitriol? I repeat, they are not MAAW! The community must be told the facts, and not absorb the remarks of the "Hunters and Gathers" who it seems are desperate to take over!

Thanks for nothing VLine Rohan Wightman, Muckleford I was excited when I read that VLine would be putting on more trains to encourage patrons back to the service by having less congested trains as part of a COVID 19 strategy.

I hoped an additional morning service would be put in place to lessen the congestion on the ever crowded 7:52 from Castlemaine to Bendigo (which customers have asking for, for years).

How wrong I was. No additional morning service was put in place, instead the 16:43 from Bendigo has become the 16:28.

The many Bendigo workers who finish at 4:30 will now have to wait for the 17:29 train, thus getting home quite late.

The many students involved in extracurricular school based activities who got the 16:43 will also be getting the later train as they are unlikely to finish their activity and walk or get a bus from school in time to get the 16:28. That's a long day for those children, especially in winter.

It appears, in regards to the Bendigo line, that VLines' plan to have less congested trains involves getting more people to drive their cars rather than get the train.

I can't help thinking this is another example of people living and working in regional areas having their needs overlooked in favour of those working in the city.

Open letter to land developers and municipal councils Grace McCaughey, Newstead What distresses me most about Mount Alexander Shire land development is the almost total lack of affordable, sustainable homes for low-income earners, who are the majority of residents.

It is also time for private developers to understand sustainable home construction basics: houses need to face north or no more than 10 degrees east of north.

When you look at homes or see photographs of the homes built on the hills bordering the sea, you understand they want that sea view. So, why can't we build houses facing the sun to give the homeowner an endless free energy source, regardless of the land facing north, south, east or west? All homes need to face north.

My partner and I built and it was lived in for 13 years, an 80 square metre two-bedroom home on 400 square metres.

The house backed onto the street had 1000 watts of solar panels on the high FIT, and we paid almost nothing for energy. We also had 13 fruit trees and 12 square metres of wicking vegetable garden beds.

Too small? We hosted over 16 people for regular lunches, often indoors. There was ample space for us, and we grew the majority of our food. Australians build on average the largest homes in the world.

Sorry, the planet cannot allow that to continue.

Small is beautiful. Or do we want to cover our unique landscape with houses?

Town boundaries must be contained. We need more dense housing in SOME areas only, even in rural towns.

It's time local councils changed their systems and legislated for light-coloured roofs, new homes built to face north, have compulsory permeable driveways to ensure rain runoff stays on-site to keep the land hydrated and doesn't contribute to land or street flooding.

They also need to donate spare land to local not-for-profit housing developers like macll.org.au. Plus enforce the planting of trees, shrubs and food plants on nature reserves. I know they will say 'sorry we do not have the power'. Well just do it I say. You are responsible for the needs and welfare of all your residents.

Shamefully there are 64 homeless people in Mount Alexander Shire and there is an urgent need for 400 affordable homes.

This cannot continue.

There are so many affordable housing options available, such as Abbeyfield, Tiny Homes, clusters with shared facilities, modern well designed and managed boarding houses, dual occupancies, homes in leased airspace and so on. Yet no progress has been made in the last 20 years.

Why? Mount Alexander had to be dragged screaming and yelling to agree to allow Tiny Homes last year. Councils need to provide and strongly advocate for the housing needs of those less fortunate members in their communities while improving unnecessarily 'complex planning'. For urgent affordable housing, fast tracking can be done and needs to be done.

Help stop McDonalds M Norris, Kyneton I was encouraged to read so many letters to the editor last week (Express, January 19) expressing varying and legitimate concerns for the proposed McDonalds. I would like to add my voice to theirs and encourage others to do the same.

My greatest of all these concerns is for my young child, and all local children: the well-researched susceptibility of young children to fast food advertising (especially with the venue being situated so close to two primary schools) and the lifelong adverse impact of fast-food on their health.

As to the argument that it will create jobs, is this where we want our children to work?

Given this, and the many other concerns previously raised, I can see no benefit, only harm.

We don't need or want a McDonalds and we must let councillors know so they can stop this development.

This is my first ever letter to the editor, and objection to council, but never has there been a proposal that so utterly fills me with dread and I hope anyone who has similar concerns will spread the word, write a letter, lodge an objection and maybe with enough voices, we can make this one difference for the benefit of our children, our town, our region and our future.

I believe in progress John Mitchell, Kyneton Unlike most of last week's letter writers, I strongly support the establishment of a McDonalds, a service station and Bunnings in Kyneton.

I believe in progress and am not stuck in the past. These businesses will be on the other side of the Calder, well away from High, Mollison and Piper streets.

Local businesses will improve when they have competition, especially Home Hardware, while the additional service station will, hopefully, stop the current three from always having identical prices, while Kyneton's current range of fast food outlets are hardly anything to rave about. At least McDonalds is consistent.

And for all the Luddites out there, these days McDonalds offers a range of healthy salads, healthy wraps, veggie burgers and

a selection of other healthy foods - in addition to its burger range. Just Google it.

I welcome McDonalds - especially for the job and training opportunities it will offer our young people wishing to eventually enter the hospitality and service industries. And I am delighted Bunnings may open here - and with it will be much needed employment opportunities for our adult workforce.

Those who oppose this overall development would probably be happier if they were able to wind the clock backwards. Get a life. It is in the other side of the Calder, for heaven's sake, and the many of those who use the servo and MacDonald's will be passers through who have no intention of ever entering Kyneton!

Yet the World Health Organisation has brought it to our attention that although the vaccine is now being produced in very large quantities, the world's poorest nations are missing out.

Whilst there are 39 million doses available for the world's wealthy countries, only 25 have been given to the work's poor. On this basis should we refuse our vaccinations until this huge imbalance is addressed?

Sustainability is key for duck hunters Peter Walsh, Leader of The Nationals, Shadow Minister for Agriculture Sustainability is key for Victoria's tens of thousands of responsible, legitimate hunters.

Whether it's maintaining wetlands or complying with strict rules and regulations to ensure future sustainability of game species, Victorian hunters willingly do what's needed to ensure a healthy environment and the future of their favourite past time.

In contrast, the Andrews Labor Government has slowly but surely chipped away at the rights of Victorian hunters since it was elected.

The Victorian Government will soon make a determination on the 2021 duck season.

After bushfires and the coronavirus pandemic, but now with a wet winter and spring the Liberal Nationals are calling for a full 2021 season.

This will not only provide confidence for hunters, but also deliver a healthy boost in spending that's so desperately needed in our regional economies.

Wasteful spending Bill Bayliss, Chewton Once again former councillor Tony Bell has exposed Mount Alexander Shire Council administration's wasteful management of ratepayers' and taxpayers' monies (Express, Jan 26 ).

Mr Bell has first-hand knowledge of what has transpired concerning the bridges in question in Fryers Road, Campbells Creek.

Inability and inaction to act upon reports and costings when first raised again exposes concerns about the council of the day to make decisions that are cost effective and now we see replacing the bridge decks blow out from $156,663 in 2014 to $805,000.

Residents expect our council and councillors to make prudent fiscal decisions.

For example the cost of the playground in Victory Park could have and should have been used to upgrade these bridges and other road infrastructure before eye-candy projects.

“The RSPCA is opposed to the use of whips for the purpose of enhancing performance in racing due to the pain and distress they inflict on horses,” the spokesperson says.

“RSPCA Victoria recently welcomed an announcement from Racing Victoria seeking national action on whip reform and calling for ultimate prohibition on use of the whips. RV sought to transition to this through a reduction in the use of the whip to between five and eight occasions per race. This would be a significant improvement on current practice where whip use is at the jockey’s discretion in the final 100m of a race.

“A recent study released by the RSPCA showed that whipping horses does not make them run faster, and debunked traditional arguments that the whip is needed for performance enhancement and to maintain racing integrity.”Reforming whip rules would be a

Dental and oral problems are very common in horses and many of these conditions can lead to changes in behaviour, chronic pain, and reduced performance, says a spokesperson for the Australian Veterinary Association.

To provide horses with optimal health and quality of life, good oral care is essential.

Good oral health in horses impacts on the overall health of an animal and the need for at least yearly dental check-ups performed by a veterinarian should be carried out.

“A thorough dental examination provides the opportunity for a veterinarian to properly examine the mouth and teeth and allows painful problems to be picked up and treated early,” the AVA spokesperson said.

“For a complete oral examination and good quality corrective care, horses need to be sedated to allow for a thorough examination of the oral structures using a dental light source. Pain relief during treatment can also be provided when needed. Veterinarians are trained in the use of these medications and in assessing the health of the horse so we can make the best and safest decisions for your horse’s wellbeing,” the AVA spokesperson said.

As she was, so she is You can hear Neil Pomroy coming along the road some days but at first guess as to "what's that sound" some reckon it's a Harley Davidson, but it's not. It's Neil taking his gorgeous black Cobra for a spin.

Just one of Neil's 'pet' cars in his Macedon Ranges garage - and strangely for someone who is known for his restorative works on all sorts of automobiles - this Cobra is just as Neil purchased it around two years ago. Even then, it was just as it was built with no modifications.The Cobra was manufactured by the Arntz Engineering Company in South San Francisco in the US. Cobras started being built there in 1979 and Neil thinks this one might have first gone on the road in 1980.

He's always thought they were pretty special vehicles and when a person he is good friends with decided to put this one on the market, Neil bought it to "keep it in the family" so to speak.

With a V8 motor it's got plenty of 'oomph' which might just come in handy if Neil's ever out for a Sunday cruise and it begins to rain.

Probably the only downside to this car is that after all that it has got, it hasn't got a soft top!

With families returning to school after the summer holiday break, Kidsafe Victoria is urging all road users to take extra care in a bid to reduce the risk of childhood injury.

The home driveway, a place where many school day family journeys begin and end, is an area where Kidsafe Victoria says particular care is needed.

Every year an average of seven children aged 0-14 years are killed and 60 are seriously injured due to driveway run over incidents in Australia.

Kidsafe Victoria General Manager, Jason Chambers, highlighted the dangers that driveways can pose for children.

"Children are unpredictable. They are naturally inquisitive, as well as being surprisingly quick and mobile. This, combined with the large blind spot that exists behind all vehicles, can make it difficult to see a child behind a reversing vehicle," Mr Cham-

bers says.

"Even if a car has parking sensors or a reversing camera fitted, children may not be noticed until it is too late to stop."

Kidsafe Victoria has also highlighted the dangers for child pedestrians around car parks and roads, particularly during the busy back to school period.

"Roads are designed with adults in mind, however children aren't 'little adults'.

They don't have as much traffic experience or knowledge and are physically and cognitively less developed than adults, which places them at greater risk of injury," says Mr Chambers.

"During school hours there will be lots of excited children around roads, car parks and driveways, especially during the often chaotic pick-up and drop-off times, which is why it is important that all road users take care."

Boom time for building The figures are out...October 2020 was the best month for new detached house building approvals in almost 21 years.Master Builders Australia chief economist Shane Garrett says that during October 2020, a total of 10,936 new detached houses received building approval. The last time a higher figure was recorded was back in February 2000.

“The numbers out today provide further proof that the HomeBuilder scheme is a huge success in supporting new home building at a very challenging time,” Shane Garrett says.

“Inward migration to Australia is the single biggest driver of demand for new home building and with permanent arrivals to the country at their lowest since World War II, government support for residential building has prevented activity from sinking to catastrophic levels,” he says.

“The extension to HomeBuilder has been very welcome from this perspective as it means that the residential building industry can look forward to a decent pipeline of work for most of 2021.

“The strong linkage between residential building activity and the health of the rest of the economy in terms of jobs and small businesses means that the extension of HomeBuilder is good news for everyone,” Mr Garrett says.

A parade down Woodend’s Avenue of Honour was led on foot by husband Andrew Wilson-Annan.

It is with the deepest regret that the Woodend Fire Brigade learnt of the death of long-term member Julie Wilson-Annan on Thursday January 14.

Julie joined the CFA as a volunteer soon after husband Andrew, which was not long since they both arrived in Woodend.

She was an important and active member of the brigade for many years, until her health did not allow her to continue. This year would have been her 17th year as a member of the CFA. Woodend CFA Captain Mike Dornau said her commitment as a volunteer firefighter is just one example of the significant contribution she made to the Macedon Ranges community.

"We were very proud to be part of Julie's farewell from Woodend on the morning of Saturday January 23," Mr Dornau said , "with all Woodend CFA

"Julie will be greatly missed by all of her mates at the Woodend Fire Brigade."

The Fox lands Hanging Rock Cup Bill West

Magpies net new coach Lisa Dennis The Castlemaine Football Netball Club has appointed a new head coach of their netball department.

Experienced coach, umpire and former player Gabrielle Campbell will lead the club's top side A Reserve and the Magpies' 17 & Under and Development Squad sides in 2021.

Gabrielle said she recently settled back in the region and is looking forward to joining the Magpies as they continue to rebuild and develop their young sides.

The Magpies will announce the appointment their B Grade and B Reserve Coach shortly and Gabrielle looks forward to working with them to develop the skills of players right across the club.

Gabrielle has her Intermediate Coaching Level qualification and aims to achieve her Advanced Level while with the club.

The long time player is also an experienced umpire and has acquired a wealth of knowledge about the game from her time behind the whistle which has stood her in good stead in her coaching career.

Gabrielle has umpired in various leagues across the state as well as the Pan Pacific Masters and Australian Masters Championships, the Deaf Netball Titles and All-Abilities Titles and the State Titles for Netball Victoria. She is currently umpiring in Bendigo.

Gabrielle is absolutely passionate about the sport. She has been a Community Netball Coach for Netball Victoria since 2017 running the Sporting Schools program and has also coached Net-Set-Go for many years.

Gabrielle has coached various primary, secondary and squad teams and is passionate about helping young netballers to develop every facet of their game.

In fact, some of the players she has coached have gone on to play at Open League and Victorian Netball League level.

"I like to give players the knowledge and support they need to go further and pursue the sport through the various pathways available," she said.

After a year where sport was decimated by Covid-19, Gabrielle said it is crucial for young people to get back out there, get back into sport and enjoy the social interactions which are a valuable part of belonging to a club.

"It's been a really tough 12 months and we encourage our players to put that behind them and get back out there and enjoy their sport once again," she said.

Gabrielle said essentially netball is all about timing and teamwork.

"If we can get that right we will go places," she said.

The club is holding Netball Trials for interested players tomorrow, Wednesday February 3 and this Friday February 5 with 17 & Under and Development Squad trials from 5pm-6pm and A Reserve trials from 6pm-7.15pm each day. Outsider I Am A Fox scored a convincing win in the 2021 Hanging Rock Cup run at Kyneton on Australia Day. Trainer Jamie Edwards, who began his career in the Macedon Ranges and is now very well established at Freshwater Creek, near Geelong, has tried to win the Cup at Hanging Rock on previous occasions.

The trainer and his wife Janet found it ironic that he had to come to Kyneton to finally win a Hanging Rock Cup. Then again it has been a disjointed year with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the transfer of the two traditional Hanging Rock meetings for 2021 to Kyneton being just one very minor disruption for the racing industry.

The Australia Day meeting at Kyneton, with attendances pre-booked, bore little resemblance to the anticipated thousands who would have been expected to flock to 'The Rock' in normal circumstances.

Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club staged a seven-event program on a slow track, with the Cup over 1850m run on a slow track.

Jockey Jason Benbow rode at the third race at Caulfield then made a speedy trip to Kyneton for one ride - I Am The Fox. Benbow had won on the much travelled seven-year- old at Terang on January 2, and trainer Edwards said the galloper had worked well in the lead-up to Australia Day. Originally sold for $260,000 at the Queensland Yearling Sales, I Am The Fox was having his 51st start, with eight wins and stakes of $161,930.

Kyneton trainer Mick Sell prepared I Am A Fox for a time, and the galloper has raced in several states, and also spent time running in Darwin.

The winner's owners reside in Darwin.

From a wide barrier I Am A Fox settled back in the filed, then made a sustained run from the 800m point to be in front entering the straight.

The $16 chance kept going and had just under a length to spare Eaton, with Von Mystic third. Warrambool galloper Tough Vic was topweight and started favourite, but finished a disappointing seventh.

Jamie Edwards recalls his interest in thoroughbreds when he was at Macedon, then later training at stables in Kyneton, around 20 years ago.

LOCAL IMPRESSIVE Kyneton trainer George Osborne produced unraced three-year-old Delightful Icing for an impressive win, starting as a $2.70 favourite in the 1100m Lonaghan Milham Maiden Plate.

He obtained the filly from breeder Ray Jones, and a number of stable clients are in the ownership.

Sam Payne rode Delightful Icing who led finished down the middle of the track to win by three and a half lengths.

Osborne is undecided whether to give the filly another start soon, or put her away for a spell.

Sutton Grange trainer Brent Stanley won with six-year-old Eitilt at Kyneton on New Year's Day, and repeated the performance on Australia Day. Eitilt started favourite, and apprentice Celine Gaudray had no trouble leading, with the eventual winning margin four lengths in the Miranda Park BM58 Handicap.

The Jack Styring OAM BM58 Handicap over 1100m concluded the program, and rank outsider Cimota ($71) won well, with Mikeala Lawrence aboard.

Among the racegoers enjoying themselves were contingents attending two buck's parties, and they were excited about photo opportunities after the final race.

Rain wipes out Woodend Cup

Pouring rain for much of Friday spelt the death knell for Saturday's scheduled 2021 Woodend Cup meeting to be held at Kyneton.

The meeting was abandoned after stewards inspected the track on Friday afternoon, and deemed it unsuitable for racing due to surface water and soft patches.

"The track received 60mm from 6am. With rain forecast this evening there is no prospect of drying out, and it is unlikely to be in a suitable condition for several days," stated Josh Grimwood, Racing Victoria's racing operations manager.

He said alternate tracks were considered for a potential transfer, but none were in reasonable proximity to Kyneton due to the impacts of the day's rain, current racing fixtures, and/or rescheduled renovations.

A replacement meeting will not be allocated at this time.

Kyneton's next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 9. The local club will be hoping for fine weather in the lead-up period.

An eight-event program had been scheduled for Saturday, with the 2021 Hanging Rock Cup winner I Am The Fox, one of gallopers in the Woodend Cup field.

Woodend golf Andrew Davies, one of the long-time 'legends' at Woodend Golf Club, shot a blistering 63 off the stick in the club's stableford event on Saturday.

With around 50 millimetres of rain late last week, no-one expected such a feat, which equated to 43 stableford points.

Davies ran hot on the back nine, in just 29 strokes to really turn back the clock.

Woodend is preparing for the 41st Maurie Armstrong Memorial Plate on Saturday, February 13, a feature 27-hole 4BBB par event open to all comers. Tournament secretary Mick Keating welcomes entries.

Woodend ladies are back in action after the holiday recess, and newcomers who would like to olay on Wednesdays are welcome.

Last week's stableford winner was Jan Graefe with 37 points, from Veronica Keating 29.

Trentham men's stableford winners on the par 3 course on Saturday were: A-grade - Gary Middleton 40 points; B and C - Michael Archer and Jim McCormack both 39.

Kyneton golf Kyneton Golf Club's annual Australia Day two-person Ambrose attracted a field of 68.

Visitors Clements and Clements took out the men's event with 66-5.75-60.25, from Damien and Mitchel Summers 72-10.5-61.5.

Locals filled the placings in the women's section, with Jenny Kerr and Vicki Nettleton on 69.75 nett edging out Helen ClavendonJones and Teaote Davies.

The mixed went to visitors Ray and Anne Gason from locals Scott Murphy and Julie Harris. Longest drives: Teaote Davies (women) and J. Butler (men).

Wednesday's stableford attracted 24 players, with the girls taking the honors. Mornington's Jenny Brown carded 45 points (handicap 30) with Teaote Davies (30) runner-up on 36. Peter Cameron and Tony di Bella were NTPs. Saturday's two-person Ambrose went to Ross Martin and Ross Foreman with 686.5-61.5, from Harry Huntly and Glen Harris 73-9.5-63.5.

Super pin winners were Terry Gamble and Jason Coley.

Lancefield golf There were plenty of good scores in Lancefield Golf Club's stableford events over the past week, with Lyn Murchison 45 points last Wednesday an exceptional effort, leading to a handicap reduction.

Sandra Stevens was runner-up with 36.

Lancefield Cricket Club's Pink Stumps Day fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation capped off a very successful weekend for the club.

Those at the family fun day on Sunday in Lancefield Park saw the Tigers' women's cricket side remain undefeated by accounting for Bacchus Marsh.

The Lancefield club north side broke through for an overdue win thanks to a last wicket stand chasing Kyneton's 9/88 (L. Sheahan 34 - M. Mouser four wickets.

A real drubbing!

Arch rivals Kyneton and Kyneton Golf met on Saturday after torrential rain the previous day had earlier put Central Highlands pennant bowls in jeopardy.

In a division one match expected to be close, with top spot at stake, Kyneton was unrelenting and raced to a 77-35 victory.

The all fours up victory was highlighted by the unrelenting 35-7 margin by Mark Smoljo against Adrian Plowman.

This Saturday, Kyneton is at home to Lancefield in a repeat of last season's grand final. Can the Tigers find the answer to winning at Kyneton?

The other big victory on Saturday came from a rejuvenated Romsey.

With their season at stake, the Redbacks won by 24 shots at Gisborne, moving into fourth spot, with coach Garry Templar returning this week. Cam Austin's runaway win against Alan Higgins was the decider, with the other two rinks very close.

Lancefield had 25 shots to spare at home to Diggers Rest in the other contest.

Clarrie cracks 400 mark

Woodend Bowling Club stalwart Clarrie Brett reached an amazing milestone when he played his 400th Saturday pennant game for the club.

The division two fixture resulted in Woodend going down at Trentham by eight shots on January 23; Clarrie's rink had an average day, but one he will always remember.

"This is a superb achievement and one that very few players are able to manage, although he's still alittle way off reaching the tally over over 750 games played by the late club legend Bill Till," commented WBC president Mike Dornau.

"What is even more amazing is that Clarrie is 91 years of age, and still going strong.

"Getting to the magic 400 was a bit like AFL star Lance Franklin struggling to get his 300th game for the Swans with injuries intervening. Clarrie missed the last game prior to Christmas, and illness sidelined for the first round back on January 23. But like Buddy, he eventually got there!

As well as playing both Saturday and mid-week pennant Clarrie continues to be very active around the club, being vice-president currently, and a board of management member.

"If there's work that needs doing, he is the first person to put his hand up," Dornau said.

In 1996, at the age of 67, Clarrie Joseph Brett joined the club when introduced by Thelma Warner.

Soon afterwards, Clarrie (also known as 'Çlakkers' or 'Joe'') served on the committee for many years and also managed the roles of secretary, selector and bar manager. He was secretary from 2003 to 2009 and president from 2011to 2013, returning to the committee in 2017.

He's enjoyed considerable success on the bowling green as part of several grand teams, and is a dual winner of the Frank O'Brien Pairs, and the club consolation championship in 1999.

Clarrie was runner-up in the club singles in 2000, and also runner-up in the men's pairs, mixed pairs and 100-up finals.

"Involvement with Woodend Bowling Club is also a Brett family affair with Clarrie's wife Angela heavily involved both on and off the green. They have contributed so much and are both life members," the president said.

Angela was ladies vice-president from 1979 to 1999; president from 1999 for several years as well as club secretary and CHBD delegate for many years, as well as enjoying success in both pennant and championship events.

The Bretts won the club's mixed pairs championship in 2005.

"Woodend Bowling Club would not be the same without the significant involvement of Clarrie and Angela for the last 25 years," Mr Dornau concluded.

CDCA side falls short The Castlemaine District Cricket Association's Under 17 Kirton Shield side lost its tilt at the 2021 Kirton Shield despite a determined effort.

The local side had a top campaign going down to the Grampians at Stawell by just seven runs, notching up a convincing 60 run victory against rivals Gisborne at Malmsbury, and then defeating Grenville at the Camp Reserve to win the right to face off against Ballarat in Sunday's final at Ballarat's Northern Oval.

The Castlemaine side were feeling confident going into

the match with both teams putting in strong performances against the talented Gisborne outfit.

Ballarat won the toss and elected to bat first and Castlemaine drew first blood when Captain Nash Robinson claimed the wicket of opener Bailey Ryan for a duck.

However, fellow Ballarat opener Jude McGuire dug in to record 64 runs and help the side to a total of 9-149. The pick of the Castlemaine bowlers were Eddie Gingell 3-41 and Nash Robinson 2-25. Maine's Owen Brasher, Fionn Kennedy and Nash Robinson also excelled in the field claiming a

catch apiece.

Unfortunately, Castlemaine also battled to get their run rate going under the onslaught from the Ballarat bowlers with Nash Robinson 33, Will Shiell 14, Owen Brasher 12 not out and Aidan Goddard 10 the only players to make double figures and the side dismissed for 10-90 falling short of their target. Ballarat's Paddy O'Brien led the charge taking 5/30.

Despite the loss the local side can be extremely proud of their efforts in the 2021 competition against quality opposition.

It was scheduled to be a big weekend in the Castlemaine District Cricket Association with all divisions set to return to competition after the school holiday break. However, Friday night's heavy rain saw the Women's competition abandoned and several of the matches on Saturday were also unable to be played due to wet grounds. Some sides managed to complete their fixtures. Wickets crash at Romsey In an extraordinary afternoon of McIntyre Cup cricket at Romsey, 17 wickets tumbled for just 155 runs on Saturday.

Batting first, with the ground surface slow after very heavy rain the day before, East Sunbury slumped to a mediocre 8/25 with paceman Louis Moor removing three of East's top four bats.

At late order recovery enabled the visitors to reach 77 (Nathan Dent 28 - Moor 3-10, Jamie Taylor 2-2, Sean Day 2-6).

Romsey batsmen then "missed the boat" to give the third placed side a real percentage boost, and lost seven wickets in the run chase. Sean Day's 37 was an innings of note, and Lachlan Wilkins captured 4-11.

ALLEN CENTURY Maestro opening bat Mick Allen again showed his class, making 108 at better than a run a ball (13 fours, two sixes) at Gardiner Reserve as Gisborne reached 6/193 c.c. (Clinton Young 31, Jayben Bannam 28 - Keiran Else 4-47) against Woodend.

The Woodsmen were then dismissed for

85 (B. Cameron 23 -Corey Parrant 4-20, Allen 2-2, Dan Martin 2-24).

Top side Sunbury United had to settle for a draw against Diggers Rest - Bulla with no play due to the condition of the ground.

There's a log jam on the ladder with the top three sides separated by percentage only, and Gisborne lurking in fourth place.

Leaders toppled Malmsbury division one cricketers defeated ladder leader Bacchus Marsh in a tight finish on Saturday.

The win sends a message to other clubs that "The Berries are Back", finding form and pressing for a finals spot.

Sent in to bat on a splendidly prepared turf pitch, Bacchus Marsh began well with Kapil Dua making 63 and Jack Kovacevic 21.

Tom Logan came into the attack and grabbed three quick wickets, then Palmy Singh took over to capture 4-13 to have the visitors reeling. The final tally was 8/137 after 40 overs.

Malmsbury skipper Matt Cox with 45, and Singh 21 and Guy "Pads"Nelson made 20.

With the game in the balance, Logan got the Berries over the line with an unbeaten 30 as the side finished on 8/141. A very good effort.

In north grade, Malmbury found Romsey too strong with Matt Burkett 55 and Jack O'Sullivan making runs before wickets tumbled to leave a handy 9/159 c.c. on the board.

Bowling honors were shared with John Todd, Jake Sundblom, Gavin Marshall and Tenzin de Podolinsky all claiming two wickets, and Kyle Fisher one.

Confidence was high in the Malmsbury camp as Tadd 23 and Justin Murphy 20 began well Romsey had other ideas and two superb catches and three runs outs turned the gme their way as Malmsbury could only compile 8/125. Missed opportunities were costly.

This Saturday Malmsbury's division one side goes to Hanging Rock, and north grade welcome Hanging Rock. Both important games.
