Businesses throughout Mount Alexander are being invited to join forces with others and commit to shift to 100 per cent clean energy. The 100% Clean Energy Campaign is one of a number of new Warrarrack Initiatives emerging locally as part of growing community momentum towards taking direct action to address climate change and the threats it poses. The Warrarrack Initiatives are being overseen by
a steering group made up of members of local sustainability organisations and Mount Alexander Shire Council. Playing a lead role, the local Zero Net Emissions Working Group is made up of members Fran Gleeson, Terry White, Heather Cummins, Simon Veitch, Alex Sansom, Frances Gall and Maree Young. "Business and industry use approximately 70 per cent of Australia’s electricity," Terry White said. "Falling clean energy costs and rising electricity prices make moving to clean energy about the easiest

and most cost-effective thing we can all do to quickly reduce emissions and help our community meet its target of zero net emissions by 2030." The working group is inviting all local businesses to get on board between now and June 30, 2023 – "which is when the federal government 100 per cent instant asset write-off will be discontinued," Mr White said. A magnitude 6 earthquake in Mansfield rocked Macedon Ranges and Mount Alexander last Wednesday. Residents reported feeling their "homes shake" about 9.15am as a result of the earthquake that had a depth of 10km. Police are investigating the circumstances of an assault at a Gisborne pharmacy on September 2. It is believed the offender argued with a staff member at the pharmacy before reaching under the protective screen and grabbing hold of her lanyard. The victim suffered emotional trauma, though was otherwise uninjured. The offender is described as about
60 years old, 5'7' tall, medium build, blonde/grey hair in a ponytail and wearing dark jeans, a pink zip-up hoodie and carrying a small black bag. Investigators have released an image of a woman who may be able to assist with enquiries. Urgent need for housing spaces
Rotary clubs across the region have joined forces to address homelessness – a growing social concern created by lack of affordable rental accommodation and safe housing in our area. The group, which includes the Rotary Clubs of Kyneton, Woodend, Gisborne, Macedon Ranges and Daylesford, is called ‘Rotary in Support of Empowerment’, or RISE, and is working with Housing all Australians and several local organisations. “We are very concerned at the growing number of women over 50 who are facing homelessness, and we want to help them regain stability in their lives,” explained Josephine Falzarano, president of Woodend Rotary. Justine Maher, team leader of housing with Sunbury and Cobaw Health, is seeing the issue first hand. "From the start of January this year, our organisation alone has worked with 65 cases in the Macedon Ranges of people in need of shelter, 70 per cent were women, 55 per cent were women over the age of 50," Justine said. "Hope is the most important thing we can give women who find themselves homeless, often without warning or resources to support themselves," said Gisborne Rotary president Lynette Robinson. As its first objective, RISE is looking for local spaces or buildings, private or commercial, that are vacant and can be leased and refurbished by volunteers to provide short-term or ‘pop up’ accommodation for homeless women.
This follows the successful July 2018 launch of Melbourne’s first pop-up shelter in a vacant building owned by agedcare not-for-profit CaSPA Care. HAA brought together private sector volunteers and over a two-year period the YWCA has been able to provide housing to a total of 85 women over 55 years of age, in a building that would normally have been empty for several years. HAA founder Robert Pradolin said it just didn't make sense to leave buildings empty when we had a housing crisis. "HAA was founded in the knowledge that if the basic need of shelter is not met, there are longer term economic consequences, and the significant associated costs are pushed to future generations," Mr Pradolin said. "These costs are a result of increased mental and physical health issues, family violence, policing and the justice system, as well as long-term welfare dependency." The Victorian Government will conduct trials in businesses and events across highly vaccinated regional areas to help the state open progressively as a vaccinated economy. Greater Bendigo will be among the first invited to participate in the trials to test systems and support in the fortnight before Victoria is aiming to reach a 70 per cent full vaccination mark on October 26. From October 11 the trials are expected to cover hospitality, hairdressing, beauty services and tourism businesses. They will also include events such as race meetings, community celebrations and concerts – allowing higher patron numbers with all attendees confirmed as being fully vaccinated. Work is underway on how Commonwealth vaccination data can be best integrated with the Service Victoria app. In regional cafes and restaurants, the patron cap increases to 30 people for indoor spaces and 100 people for outdoor spaces once Victoria reaches the 70 per cent double dose vaccination. ACTIVE CASES At the time of going to press yesterday, Macedon Ranges Shire had recorded 20 active COVID-19 cases. Mount Alexander Shire had recorded four active cases. Dr Peter Sloane, director of medical services at Central Highlands Rural Health, said the patients were receiving care from healthcare providers and were isolating in their homes. "The cases are linked to known clusters and are close contacts within households, so infection was to be expected," Dr Sloane said. "At the moment we're pretty safe in the Macedon Ranges and the cases will peter out over the next two to three weeks, but because we're so close to Melbourne there's always a risk that we'll get more cases." Dr Sloane said most of the patients would recover from their illness in their homes, and one patient was conveyed to hospital last Friday but was not in intensive care. At an online community briefing with Macedon Ranges Shire Council on Friday, Loddon Mallee Public Health Unit director Bruce Bolam said four in five current hospitalisations from COVID were in unvaccinated people. "If we think of a ship and we're travelling through stormy waters, that's probably a good way of thinking about where we're up to," he said. "We've been getting waves hitting out ship and we know we're in the midst of this Delta wave and it's been incredibly challenging.

Residents can claim up to one cubic metre of free, self-loaded mulch, which is produced from garden organics brought to at council’s transfer stations. Police have reported an influx of unauthorised workers from metropolitan areas coming into Gisborne and Macedon Ranges. They warn that under the current restrictions, employees of businesses such as nail and hair salons and other beauty services are not listed as authorised workers at this time. "We wish to remind people that those living and working in restricted areas such as Metropolitan Melbourne and Ballarat are not permitted to travel to regional Victoria unless they hold an authorised worker permit," a statement said. "We advise that businesses in the area take note of this directive and ensure that no workers from restricted areas are employed to provide services at this time."

Helping raise awareness around mental health maintenance is a matter close to Simon Robins' heart. "I've lost a few mates in the music scene who have taken their lives during the pandemic," says the Fryerstown-based vocalist in thrash band Pissbolt. Also renowned as a comic book colourist, Robins didn't hesitate when contacted by Castlemaine-based suicide prevention charity, HALT, to add his creative talents to a new wearable mental health initiative. Launching their new Guest Artist Series, HALT (Hope Assistance Local Tradies) invited Robins to team up with Ray Ahn, bass player and illustrator for legendary Sydney punk band The Hard-Ons, to produce a gaze-grabbing series of T-shirts. Ahn did the design and Robins took care of the colour for the band-style tees aimed at raising mental health awareness with tradies, musos and other artists uppermost in mind. "Doing this was a no-brainer," Robins told the Midland Express. "It's something that's close to me and unfortunately it's something we all have to deal with." HALT's Jem Moloney said bringing the artworld and the tradie world together for the project was particularly rewarding. "Suicide and stigmas surrounding mental health issues affect both of these worlds," Jem said. "Artists often work in trades alongside their arts practice and the mental health struggles of the tradie community, including depression, anxiety and addiction, are very much echoed in the art world. "As someone who has worked in tradie jobs and in the arts it was great to bring those two worlds together for this project. "I hope this project can help stimulate conversations around mental health. And they just look bloody cool." HALT is a grassroots suicide prevention charity promoting mental health awareness among blue collar workers. Moloney believes the humble band tee is an often overlooked artform but affords a perfect canvas for artists like Robins and Ahn to interpret the HALT message. "While you won’t see band shirts up at the National Gallery, you will see them on every street, and that’s where HALT can typically be found promoting mental health," he said. "By wearing one of these tees you won’t just look great, you’ll

An aged-care facility is planned to be built on 8.4 hectares of grazing land at the corner of Melbourne-Lancefield Road and Hutchinsons Lane at Romsey. A 120-bed residential aged-care facility for Romsey has Macedon Ranges Council’s tick of approval as it progresses to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Councillors voted 5-3 in favour of the proposal, which aims to fill a void of services in the east but threatens to extend Romsey’s town boundary. The SignatureCare facility would be built on 8.4 hectares of grazing land at the corner of Melbourne-Lancefield Road and Hutchinsons Lane. The aged-care facilitator informed councillors earlier this month it had considered several other locations but there were no suitable alternatives within the town boundary. Councillor Geoff Neil pushed for the facility’s approval, pointing to the strong need in the shire's east. “Every now and then a planning application crosses one's desk that literally
excites. For me this is one such application,” he said. “The opportunity to replicate an agedcare facility in the east of the shire should be pursued with vigour.” Cr Neil argued the proposed site was on the very edge of the town boundary and the broader benefits of the facility outweighed the negative. He gained the support of Crs Mark Ridgeway, Janet Pearce, Dominic Bonanno and Bill West. While Cr West said the application “passes the pub test”, he emphasised “that approval should not in any way be seen as a green light for further development of such a scale to the north of Romsey”. But not all were convinced. Council officers advised refusal of the application based on land suitability, use, location outside the town boundary and neighbourhood/amenity impacts. Mayor Jennifer Anderson argued the
council should strongly consider planning implications. “We all know that there is an ageing population and an increase in dementia … this isn’t opposition to an aged-care facility: this is on planning grounds. Is this the right location at this point in time?” she said. Cr Anderson and Cr Rob Guthrie said the council was still undertaking a Romsey Structure Plan. They indicated community consultation so far had suggested no development should occur north of the current town boundary. “The area to the north of Romsey has been recognised for having some of the best soil in this country,” Cr Guthrie said. “Everything that I’ve seen over the last 18 years involved with council is that this area must be protected and that’s what the community has always wanted. There should be no development on this land
other than agricultural development.” Cr Guthrie said the application “fails miserably to comply with the council’s statement of planning policy”. The application attracted eight submissions highlighting increased traffic, road safety, impacts on amenity and character, and loss of views and privacy. SignatureCare has amended its initial plans, including addressing concerns of residents, but has not submitted these changes to the council. The council was forced to consider the original plan. The application is subject to a VCAT appeal against the council’s failure to determine the matter within statutory timeframes. A division recorded those in favour were Crs West, Ridgeway, Pearce, Neil, Bonanno, and those opposed were Crs Guthrie, Anderson and Moore. Cr Annette Death was absent from the meeting.

Show reimagined In the tradition of 'the show must go on', Lancefield Agricultural Society is still holding three key components of the Show circuit. The homecrafts, horse and poultry competitions are still being run and depending on the restrictions at the time, they will be either virtual (online) or able to be enjoyed in 3D, with smaller groups at a time viewing the displays. The reduced homecrafts schedule includes sections where the winners will go on to the regional and state finals and a large junior selection of craft, cooking and photography – lots of creative time to be filling the school holidays with. Poultry steward Julia Goddard said she felt it was important for people to be part of something in the community, especially the children, in a year with very few opportunities to do things together. "People’s entries will be dropped off at allotted times and the judges will come on the Saturday before Show Day as usual," she said.
Pandemic restrictions on Show Day, Sunday October 17, will determine if anyone is able to view the crafts and poultry. "It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t run all the fun parts of the Show that the children really enjoy, with the rides and animals, this way they can still be involved," show secretary Nikki Reeves said. Show treasurer Vivien Philpotts said committee members had their fingers crossed that people would be able to view the displays on Show Day. "The Agricultural Society has been supported by Macedon Ranges Shire Council and has been successful in receiving their COVID support grant to purchase some barriers and other infrastructure to support safe movement of people,” she said. A Macedon Ranges Village Hub will focus on bringing older people together online and in their community. Macedon Ranges Shire Council has been awarded $330,000 over three years through the federal Seniors Connected Program to help fund the project. The project will run from 2021 to 2024, when a range of initiatives will be implemented to alleviate loneliness and social isolation for older residents. The views of older residents will be integral to the design of the project and decisions about activities and programs to be offered. The Village Hubs Grants program is an initiative of the Australian Government’s Seniors Connected Program and is administered by Independent Living Assessment. The council was one of 10 successful applicants through the program.

Supporting friends across the seas Castlemaine South Sudanese community members and supporters have joined forces to provide clean drinking water to a remote farming community in South Sudan. Former Castlemaine resident Akier Manut – a former child soldier and refugee – enlisted the help of local refugee advocate, supporter and friend, Vic Say, in helping him kick off a fundraising drive to support the community in his home region in remote South Sudan. The pair quietly set about fundraising through their local contacts and raised $10,000 to assist the South Sudanese community to build a well. Vic said he was privileged to visit the remote community with Akier back in late 2010/early 2011. "It was part of Sudan then, we were there for the Independence Referendum," Vic said. "It was quite the homecoming for Akier who had fled the region 25 years earlier as a nine-year-old, after being at-

tacked by armed militia from the north while herding cattle. "Cattle is the currency there. Akier's family were cattle farmers and have cropping and grazing land," Vic said. The cattle farmers graze their cattle during the day and house them in vast circular mud brick buildings with cone shaped thatched roofs at night, where their owners sleep with their herd, protected from predators. Akier endured a great deal fleeing across the Sahara, surviving thirst and famine, snipers and time as a soldier. He later managed to finish school in Kenya and after completing his studies obtained a visa to come to Australia, where Vic met him in 2005 when he came to get a job at Don KR in Castlemaine. "Akier and his wife both still work at Don and now have six children together," Vic said. Akier keeps in regular contact with his family in South Sudan via phone and What's App updates and when the call came through from his cousin recently for assistance with the well project, the pair wanted to help.

"Many South Sudanese Australians who return to visit the region become ill with dysentery due to the water," Vic said. "While we were there a girl regularly undertook a day's walk in order to fetch clear water we could sterilise with a UV water filter we took with us, so we wouldn't get sick, as we were not accustomed to the bacteria in the local water." Local funds raised have enabled the community to drill a bore, concrete the well foundations and install pumping equipment. Akier and Vic were delighted to receive a What's App video of community members celebrating the well's official opening. "The new well will provide the community with clear, clean water, as opposed to the cattle and human waste contaminated water, which can be the only water available close by without such a well," Vic said. "It's a great example of communities working together," he said.

Festival planning under way
Community groups, businesses and creatives can now register interest in running an event or activity as part of the 2022 Macedon Ranges Autumn Festival. Held over one month from late March to late April, the festival aims to showcase the region and encourage the community and visitors alike to engage in diverse experiences. The festival is not just for big events. Whether you give your shop window an autumn look or promote an autumn inspired menu item, it all contributes to a festival feeling and provides an incentive for people to explore further, stay longer and spend locally. Funding support is available for those wanting to participate, as are a range of marketing and promotional activities. This year a grant is available to deliver an artistic experience or attraction as a highlight of the festival. The Greens have announced Dr Cate Sinclair as their candidate for Bendigo in the upcoming federal election. The Mount Alexander Shire resident told the Express she was excited to be selected and looked forward to sharing the Greens' plan to change the balance of power. "This is something new for me. I've never entered into politics before but climate change and healthy and strong communities are issues I am extremely passionate about and I want to push for action at a federal level," she said. With an election expected before May 2022, the local occupational therapist and health researcher said she wanted to make the announcement early, get on the front foot and get out into the community and start talking to people about the issues that were important to them. Dr Sinclair has lived in the local region for 20 years and has spent more than 30 years working with children and families. Her home is on Dja Dja Wurrung land on the fringe of the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park and she is passionate about caring for the country. Dr Sinclair has worked in hospital, community and mental health services, listening to people and hearing their concerns. She said people and families
thrived when they were connected with healthy communities and environments. "Like many I am frustrated by the lack of government action to address climate change but working in the health sector I am also concerned about access to health services, particularly mental health services, and affordable housing," she said. "Access to mental health services and affordable housing were already an issue before the pandemic but are now even more so." The health practitioner believes more funding should be being spent on preventing issues before they occur, keeping families and individuals connected and supported within their communities. On the topic of climate change, the Greens candidate said that according to an Australian Conservation Foundation poll conducted in August this year, 81 per cent of voters in the Bendigo region believed greater climate action would help nature and wildlife survive extreme weather, and 71 per cent wanted the federal government to do much more. Dr Sinclair said the Greens would push for a new 40 per cent corporate super-profits tax on the excess profits made by big corporations, including those in the mining sector. "This Tycoon Tax will raise $338 billion over the next decade, allowing the Greens to

"Mount Alexander Shire is already leading the way with projects such as MASH getting solar

Registered nurse Lisa Martin had spent 15 years nursing at Kyneton Health and was ready for a new challenge. When she was first approached to take on a new role helping clients manage their Home Care Packages, Lisa knew it was the job for her. "I feel really lucky to have nursed in lots of different areas locally, both at Kyneton Hospital, and out on the road with the Macedon Ranges Community Nursing team," Lisa says. "The home care case manager role was the perfect next step for me as I knew I’d be able to make a long-term difference for people living in their own homes." Home Care Packages are funded by the federal government and allow older people to access a variety of services including cleaning, meal preparation, gardening, home maintenance, companionship, personal care and nursing. They help people to stay at home as safely and independently as possible. The role of the case manager is help clients navigate the Home Care Package process, including regular meetings to work out exactly how to best spend the funding received from the government. "Home Care Packages can make a real difference to people’s lives at home," Lisa says. "Many clients just need an extra bit of support, whether that’s getting their laundry done, buying mobility equipment, or helping with transportation to appointments. For others, a Home Care Package can help with allied health services or nursing care. Home Care Packages can be the difference between staying safely at home, or moving into care." Lisa has lived in the Macedon Ranges since 2005 and has a strong connection with the local community. Her previous nursing roles has meant she has established good relationships with local doctors, as well as health and personal care service providers. "Families don’t always live around the corner so my role is to be that local expert who can provide the link to services in the area. I’m really lucky as I get to build meaningful relationships with my clients and at the same time, help take the pressure of families so they can return to being a daughter or son, rather than a carer trying to navigate the systems," Lisa says. Home Care Packages are tailored to meet individual needs and each package allows choice and flexibility in the way that care and support is provided. Reviewing your Will – How often should you do this and why
Life moves very quickly, especially in recent times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Given this, we tend to forget or delay updating our Wills to reflect any changes in our circumstances that have occurred. Your Will is arguably one of the most important legal documents you will make during your life. On your death, the gifts made by your Will are one of the biggest financial transactions you will ever make. Unfortunately, when this takes place you won’t be around to make sure that everything goes to plan. This is why it is important to have clear plans in place, with every contingency covered, and why you can’t ignore the need to have a professionally drafted Will. So how often should you review your Will? Don’t isolate – connect Mount Alexander Seniors Festival organising group members are very keen during this special time to highlight and celebrate the continuing contribution of seniors to our vibrant community. To encourage activity, organisers have reflected upon their arrangements with a view to increasing participation of isolated seniors. The group hopes that the festival can return to face-to-face live events in October 2022, meanwhile it's running for the

A breed of its own
Pet friendly over-50s resort a perfect fit After a life-long association with canines of all sizes and breeds, GemLife Woodend resident Stephanie Rickard cannot imagine life without having a dog by her side. Stephanie describes the dog show world as unabashedly flamboyant, combining showbiz flair and a passion for canines with dedication, patience and persistence. “Show dogs have a fabulous life. It’s a bit like being a performer. Some are shy, and others can be real extroverts,” says
Stephanie, who believes the dogs benefit greatly from the experience. “It’s an incredible thing for dogs to test their agility when tackling jumps, weaving in and out between poles, balancing on seesaws and even dancing to music. “These are things many dogs love to do and it keeps them fit and healthy. It also distracts them from other pursuits like digging our gardens or chewing the furniture.” Having a dog as a pet has so many benefits, and even stroking a dog is therapeutic, according to Stephanie. She says they also give people a purpose because owners must commit to looking after them, which involves regular walks, ensuring they are healthy and well fed and most importantly returning the animal’s unconditional love. “We walk our dogs twice a day and often meet fellow pet owners down at the park. It’s where we solve the world’s problems. But seriously, it is so important to stay active and engaged and animals help with that. It’s the secret to happiness,” she says. The Real Estate Institute of Victoria has welcomed the Victorian Government’s recent decision to ease restrictions on private property inspections. The body said banning one-on-one inspections provided little benefit to COVID safety and only served to lock out renters, buyers and sellers. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews lifted the restrictions ahead of his COVID roadmap reveal. REIV CEO Gil King said it was pleasing to see removal of the onerous restrictions. “The sector worked hard to inform the government on how the harsh shutdown of real estate services achieved nothing positive; in fact, it caused substantial damage at all levels of property market participation and paralysed those with a desperate need to find accommodation or realise their assets," King said. “It’s now important that our members lead sellers, buyers and renters through COVID-safe measures and help ensure the sector returns safely back to its buoyant best. The REIV is ready to support all members through precise execution of the new restrictions.” On the Victorian Government’s COVID roadmap, Mr King said: “We have reviewed the sections relevant to the real estate sector and are seeking more information". “The roadmap is long and ambiguous which is making it very difficult for businesses to plan and prepare," he said. "The recently announced processes regarding property inspections for sale, end of lease or settlement in restricted areas remains a guessing game with many aspects and advice ignored and questions unanswered.” A summary of the processes for property inspections follows.

The Macedon Ranges is facing a biodiversity crisis with many threatened species at risk of extinction. To highlight this danger and explore threats, a new interactive exhibition has been launched at the Kyneton Museum showcasing the unique flora and fauna. A Biodiversity Crisis: Animals and Plants of the Macedon Ranges brings together a collection of historical accounts of local species and photographs of among the 376 animal species and 1457 varieties of native plants recorded. Get up close with a collection of animal specimens or peek inside some natural tree hollows to see who lives inside. Macedon Ranges Council’s director of planning and environment Angela Hughes said the Macedon Ranges’ natural environment was unique and included a high diversity of threatened habitat types. “This exhibit will teach you about our existing local flora and fauna, but also about that which has been lost. We need to learn about the past if we are going to have any chance at protecting diverse species of the future,” she said. Schools are encouraged to express interest in participating in educational workshops and talks associated with this interactive exhibition. The exhibition will run until February 27. The largest drone trial conducted by Powercor will begin this week across central Victoria as the electricity distributor investigates how the technology may be used in the future to maintain a safe and reliable network for homes and business. Over a six-week period, a range of different types of drones will inspect 10,000 poles in areas including Bendigo and Woodend. The drones will capture high-resolution images and thermographic information, helping to locate ‘hot spots’ on the network that may lead to faults in the future. The latest trial is a significant expansion of previous trials, which have tested the capability of using drones to inspect pole tops and powerlines, including in areas that are in remote terrain and difficult to access. Powercor’s head of digital, Luke Skinner, said the benefit of drone inspections was they could cover a large area quickly and capture in greater detail information about power assets. “This trial is about finding new ways to keep our network operating safely and reliably,” Mr Skinner said. “We will be operating these drone inspections alongside our traditional inspection program to allow us to analyse results and accuracy.

The work is in addition to Powercor’s ongoing continuous program of asset
inspections, which are also being conducted by crews in vehicles, on foot and by helicopter. Forest Fire Management Victoria staff and authorised officers will be patrolling forests, parks and reserves across the Loddon Mallee region and issuing fines for anyone flouting the rules. Volunteer trappers wanted
Volunteer trappers mark eight years of operation of the Macedon Ranges Indian Myna Action Group this year. Indian mynas are an introduced species, now considered one of the world’s most invasive pests. Territorial and domineering, these birds commonly form large flocks on the fringes of town, driving out native species and outcompeting them for nesting hollows, ousting other occupants and their eggs from their nests and preying on the young. It’s the noticeable decline in their own backyard native birds that drives most MRIMAG trappers to action. “Our Woodend garden was filled with small native birds – wrens, spinebills, honeyeaters – and then it wasn’t," said resident Kate Daniel. "All I could see and hear was a mob of indian mynas. "I didn’t love the idea of trapping, but I couldn’t ignore the changes in our own garden; the mynas had driven out everything. "I successfully trapped on and off as necessary and it made a huge difference. It cost me nothing but a few dollars of dried cat food." MRIMAG has recorded 7445 mynas
trapped across the shire since the group's formation in 2013, with some impressive tallies: Gisborne 3759, Lancefield 2439 and Woodend 2337. Active trappers are at work in Riddells Creek, Romsey, Kyneton, Macedon, Newham and Malmsbury too. While the group is pleased with its success, MRIMAG coordinator Ron Fink said mynas could quickly go from declared almost non-existent in a town, to roaming the main street again. "Without constant control the numbers will surge in a short time," Mr Fink said. "MRIMAG is calling for more volunteers to sign up for this free community-run program. "Members will receive a simple-to-operate trap, instructions on its use and on the humane disposal of the target species, as well as tips on discouraging their return. "We know that even a small number of trappers seems to be able to keep the number of mynas down to a very small population size, but we need new and active recruits to help keep it going. Consultation continues Huntly Barton, Kyneton On September 9 the Kyneton and District Town Square Co Op was invited to a zoom meeting with Working Heritage, Creative Victoria and other stakeholders in relation to the old Kyneton Primary School site. Yet again we will need to go through another consultation process, let’s hope this process is straight forward and does not further divide our community. The precinct surrounded by Simpson, Ebden, Baynton and Mollison Streets is owned by the people of Kyneton and District. We have an opportunity to create a unique public space that will service our community for generations to come. Maybe as a gesture to the community WH could rectify the damage done to the school by vandalism and allow community to use the outside spaces while the consultation process continues.
Sustainability 101 Steve Geddes, Castlemaine To practice sustainability we should eat less meat or none at all, watch food miles, recycle waste thoughtfully and be concerned about animal welfare.Why is it that the Mount Alexander Sustainability Group and their membership have decided that none of this matters anymore? Providing DonKR with a low-cost waste disposal facility in the form of a wood-fired biomass plant encourages decades of bad practice dependent on animal cruelty and transportation of meat across the globe. Hardly the green project it claims to be! I would like MASG to recognise this and consider the long-term implications of what they are planning to become involved in. In time you will learn that biomass has become a scourge in Romania, Lithuania and Southern Italy. Ancient forests are being clear-felled, all in the name of ‘green’ energy. Good luck explaining that to your grandkids…
We must allow progress Denise Murphy, Kyneton As a resident of Kyneton/Macedon Ranges Shire for 50 of the last 55 years, I consider myself a local. The council has knocked back the application for the development of vacant land for both Bunnings and a McDonald’s outlet. This township of ours has to grow. The shopping precinct has extended over the years from the high school to the Campaspe River along High/Mollison/Piper Streets with businesses opening up and making a good living. Although with the onset of COVID it has been a challenge for some. We have people coming to live in Kyneton because of what the town has to offer, with adult, teenager and children’s education and sporting activities available. Our family has had four generations and now five since the early 1950s living and enjoying what this precinct has to offer. We must allow progress, and a Bunnings store and a McDonald's outlet is progress. There are those who wonder what will happen to local businesses, well over the years progress has caused local businesses to close down, i.e: MacBeans Hardware and Turner Bros Hardware when Home Hardware came to town, there was no uproar then. The upgrade and the businesses along Saleyards Road is what progress is all about. There was no uproar when Hardwicks Abattoirs sold, so why are we against Bunnings and McDonalds, who would employ locals? I can assure those who don’t want this progress, the first thing a majority of young adults do the day they get their driver's

licence, they go to Gisborne to get McDonalds! The old Kyneton Hospital has caused concern, it has sat there for years waiting for someone to bring it back to life. We have new housing estates opening in our town boundaries, this is progress, these things happen and nobody but nobody is going to prevent progress from happening.
A dangerous future Rosemary Taylor, Castlemaine I wonder why attitudes towards nuclear power seem to have changed so dramatically. Where are the protesters taking to the streets against the proposed nuclearpowered submarines being built in Australia? Aren't people concerned - not to say, afraid? Can it be the emphasis on career paths, overseas holidays - "the good life" has become the accepted "way to go"? Perhaps the message of the movie, Wall Street, "greed is good", was not recognised as irony, and this blinded people to the risk of disasters already experienced in Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and Fukushima if we pursue such a dangerous future. Accidents always happen in any industry, but when they happen in the nuclear industry they really happen.
Myopic vision Jennie Morrison, Woodend Strategic Planning at Macedon Ranges Shire Council, which has asked the community previously for our views on the Economic Development Plan and the Rural Land Use Study, have now presented us with the Vision and Council Plan. The myopic ‘Vision’ approved of by a Community Vision Assembly of 24 anonymous people does not represent my views, nor the views of members of the Macedon Ranges community who respect the environment and are opposed to overdevelopment. Prioritised by this ‘Vision’ is economic development. The Economic Development Plan and the flawed Rural Land Use Strategy propose rezoning a large portion
of the Shire to facilitate that development, financially benefiting a few while degrading the landscape and the conservation values that the State's Distinctive Areas legislation sought to protect. An acknowledgement of that legislation and the need to support agriculture and conservation is an omission in these documents that must be rectified. In a time of uncertainty, with climate change and threatened extinction of wildlife species, the first principle of the Council Plan for our rural shire, to last for 10 years, should be conserving the natural environment, not carving it up, with the Distinctive Areas legislation and Statement of Planning Policy as the ‘guiding light’. Prioritising economic growth is more appropriate to the aspirations of an urban council. Our councillors will vote on these documents and they need to know that our community values where we live; in a protected rural Macedon Ranges Shire.

"The important thing is that I get reelected. "Remember the Petrov Affair? The Communist Threat in Vietnam? The Russia Threat? The original Yellow Peril? The Indonesian Threat? It works every time, we’ll bring back the Yellow Peril and some nuclear subs will be the clincher." No more need be said but if the cap fits, wear it.

Daylight savings and your body clock With daylight saving around the corner, a Deakin University sleep expert offers some tips to help our bodies adjust to the time shift and get a good night's sleep, including the kids. Associate Professor Mark Stokes from Deakin's School of Psychology explained that our sleep-wake cycle takes a hit when the clocks change, leaving some people struggling to sleep. "Our internal body clock, or circadian rhythm, is regulated by exposure to bright sunlight. That repowers the rhythm and resets our body clock allowing us to adjust each day to lengthening and shortening days," Prof Stokes said. "Daylight saving shifts the outside clock an hour in one direction or another, but not your internal body clock. So you can tell it to adjust as much as you like, but it will only do so in response to the right stimuli: sunlight. "A few days with morning light exposure will see most people get over the struggle to waking earlier when daylight savings starts." Prof Stokes cautions that we should never underestimate the power of sleep. "We know it is during sleep when the brain consolidates learning from the day and sheds the unimportant experiences. It also allows your body to recover," he said. “When your sleep-wake cycle is not aligned with the day-night cycle, your mind and body will be more fatigued and your reactions will be significantly reduced in speed and accuracy.” Prof Stokes offers the following tips for getting a good night's sleep:

Turn your water smarts on Visitors to Goulburn-Murray Water’s lakes, dams and reservoirs over the remainder of these September school holidays are being reminded to keep safe on the water and do the right thing. Local reservoirs, like Cairn Curran near Maldon, are forecast to become popular visitor destinations over this school holiday period with Cairn Curran currently sitting at 64 per cent of total storage capacity. “Nearly all our storages at very healthy levels, so there is plenty of water for everyone to enjoy whatever their recreational activity or pastime may be,” GMW storage services general manager Martina Cusack said. “Be sure to stay safe at all times by following the rules for safe boating, including speed restrictions and keeping a lookout for submerged trees and other hazards. “Staying safe also means continuing to follow the latest COVID-19 directions from the chief health officer at www.dhhs.vic.gov. au/coronavirus. “We want all visitors to have fun and make the most of the warmer weather and we want them to return home safe.” GMW's Water Smarts campaign highlights the seven most common risks and
hazards when boating and swimming at our water storages. These are: 1. Be throttle smart – stick to a safe speed 2. Be jacket smart – wear your life jacket 3. Be mate smart – always take a mate 4. Be conditions smart – check the weather and water levels 5. Be alcohol smart – don’t drink on the water 6. Be hazards smart – be aware of submerged rocks, sandbars, trees, shallow water and debris 7. Be dive smart – never jump from dam walls or ledges. Visitors are also urged to camp in the designated areas and respect the environment by picking up after themselves. “GMW has a ‘carry-in carry-out’ policy, so please remember when leaving a GMW storage that you take with you any rubbish and leave the area as you found it,” Ms Cusack said. Holiday stocking for regional fishing fun Families across central Victoria can reel in a new hobby these school holidays thanks to the stocking of more than 2500 catchable-size rainbow trout into nine lakes across the region. The stockings in and around Bendigo, Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges are among 32,000 fish that have gone into more than 80 lakes across the state. The stockings are part of a Victorian Fisheries Authority goal to stock 10 million fish this year – funded by recreational fishing licence fees and Go Fishing Victoria, a $35 million Andrews Labor Government plan to get more people fishing, more often. Family fishing lakes boast access to waterside platforms, walking tracks, picnic areas and other facilities, creating an excellent environment for keen anglers while wetting a line. Rainbow trout are perfect for
kids or anyone new to fishing because they are easy to catch and take a range of bait such as worms and Powerbait, and lures. The trout were grown by the Victorian Fisheries Authority team at their Snobs Creek hatchery, near Eildon. For the September school holidays, stocked waters in central Victoria include Crusoe Reservoir, Neanger Lake, Forest Lake, Kennington Reservoir in Bendigo, Hanging Rock Lake and Walter J Smith Reservoir in the Macedon Ranges, and Jubilee Lake and Glenlyon Dam near Daylesford. A daily bag limit of five trout applies to family fishing lakes, of which only two trout can exceed 35 centimetres. Little athletics back on track Although at the moment there is little or no community sport taking place with the winter football and netball seasons being impacted by repeated lockdowns, there is hope that Kyneton’s oval will be buzzing by early October with the sound of the return of little athletics. Kyneton Little Athletics is scheduled to commence its 2021/22 season on Saturday October 9 at 9am. The club’s president Ashley Fraser is optimistic about the upcoming season. "Whether or not our season starts on time will be driven by LAVic and the health experts," he said. "Our main concern is the safety of the children; however we are hopeful with the correct COVID protocols and with the cooperation of our members that we can get the kids outside and running around in the beautiful Kyneton spring weather." The season runs until the end of March 2021 and with many children and young people having been stuck at home with no organised sport the club is hoping that there will be an increased interest in athletics as a way to get people moving again and working on their fitness. “Last year we had 165 members ranging from aged five to 16,”
Fraser said. “This year we are continuing to focus on coaching and hoping to see more senior athletes involved, using athletics is a great way to stay fit in the off season if they usually do other winter sports such as football and netball.” A wide range of track and field events are covered every Saturday morning at the Kyneton Showgrounds – sprint and middle-distance running, hurdles, jumps, shot put, discus and javelin. Coaching is provided both to the children and their parents if they are interested in leading a group and the emphasis is on improving on personal bests each week. There is the opportunity to enter regional competitions and many Kyneton members have gone on to compete at state level. “Athletics is a sport that you can continue to be involved in for your whole life,” Fraser said. “Many elite athletes only started in their mid-teens and we have lots of former club members who have gone on to join one of the many senior clubs in the region to continue their training.” Registration is $132 per athlete (family discounts apply). Peak coach of the year The Essendon District Football League has named Gisborne’s Jason Peak as women’s football division one Coach of the Year. In addition, top Gisborne player Claire Bourdon is captain of the EDFL’s Team of the Year, named in the centre. Fullback Brianna Woodburn and forward flanker Natalie Dowdy were the other Bulldogs to make the side. Gisborne club president John Wood commended Peak, Bourdon, Woodburn and Dowdy on their recognition by the league. “We moved inti an extremely strong competition and put together an outstanding season,” Wood said. Gisborne is wasting no time in looking ahead to the 2022 season, re-signing some of its topline players. Last week it was announced that ace goalkicker Pat McKenna and outstanding midfielder Brad Bernacki would be back with the Bulldogs next season. They are rated among the elite payers in the Bendigo League. Gisborne also re-signed ruckman Braidon Blake, and announced that Jaidyn Owen would be returning the club from Bacchus Marsh.

The Maryborough Castlemaine Football Netball League executive last week decided to cancel the 2021 season without a finals series. For weeks there was ongoing speculation there might be a way to hold finals, or at least Grand Finals. The announcement of the roadmap out of lockdowns did not allow for country Victoria’s sport to return within the timeframe the league had allowed for finals. Teams that were on top of the ladder at the time matches were last played have been classified as minor premiers. In senior football, the top two sides, Harcourt and Trentham, were both unbeaten but never had the chance to play one another during the home and away rounds. Order of Merit triumph Bill West
Former Romsey golfer Daniel Gaunt leapt back into the limelight last week by taking out the Clutch Order of Merit in the United Kingdom. After a very consistent season the 42-year-old’s eighth placing in the final event of the season was sufficient for him to top the aggregate points on the tour, which caters for both established and up and coming players, both male and female. The victory boosted Gaunt’s confidence, and his bank balance as well, as he fired 69, 68 for a five under 137 tally. By topping the Order of Merit the Aussie receives 5000 pounds ($9417 Australian), a Challenge Tour invite, entry to the European Tour qualifying school, and an equipment deal with Mizumo Golf. Romsey Golf Club was where Daniel and older brother Chris (who later won a Victorian Open) received an exemption to become members at a very young age,

such were their natural golfing talents. Daniel’s short game was extraordinarily good as a youngster and the two boys received plenty of encouragement from father Les (eight times a Romsey champion) mother Bev, as well as grandfather Laurie Thomson – one of Romsey’s finest all-round competitive sportsmen. They were the outstanding golfers at Gisborne Secondary College, and soon chalked up championship wins and course records. Daniel won a Victorian Junior Championship and both played in top level Melbourne pennant before graduating to the tough grind in professional ranks. Years of ups and downs in pro ranks leaves Gaunt with a record of seven professional wins, including two on the European Challenge tour. He fired the best round of the day in his sole British Open. Romsey Golf Club was quick to congratulate Gaunt on his latest success, wishing him well on the path ahead.

Daniel Gaunt: A healthier approach to social media PGA of Australia On August 24, Aussie golfer Daniel Gaunt, who grew up in Romsey but now resides in London, posted to Instagram how he was struggling mentally. Then, on R U OK? Day earlier this month, he shared his recent struggles and his surprise at the reaction his post received. Written with Tony Webeck. I didn’t expect any response to my Instagram post but the reaction from people was pretty outstanding to be honest. And it was overwhelming, the amount of messages I got asking if I was all right. If I needed to chat, that they’re always there for me, stuff like that. I couldn’t have imagined that was going to happen. It was a post that I just put out and didn’t really expect anything of it. You get a few likes or whatever, but it just shows that there are people that care about you. That’s where social media is good for your career – you’re keeping people updated that actually take an interest in your career and you as a person. You don’t realise how many people actually do care about you until something like that happens. It wasn’t a cry for help but I think it’s the best way to communicate with people through social media. Just explain that even though I’m having good results, it doesn’t mean I’m 100 per cent fit or anything like that. And that we all struggle. Of course, and we all recognise this, there is a negative aspect to social media. I saw Jessica Korda’s post about death threats after the Solheim Cup; there are just some seriously sad people out there doing that. It’s not good enough really. Social media channels have to be stricter on how you sign up to these things to stop this online abuse because it doesn’t help anyone. Since our first lockdown over here in England I’ve started cycling and that’s been unbelievable for clearing my head. Just to go out for a couple of hours on the road, around Richmond Park and see some wildlife, cruise around watching other cyclists. You don’t think about anything. That has been a massive benefit for me. I’ve struggled for a few years mentally on and off the golf course. The other day I went to work and everything was just getting to me. I’ve had a pretty good year on the golf course but my short game and putting has let me down. I get really
anxious over putts, my hands start shaking and then with everything that’s going on in the world, sometimes it just boils over. My wife’s mum died not long ago and that has played a big part in the way we’ve felt mentally. Knowing what’s going on in Australia with COVID and the lockdowns, it’s made me think, Am I ever going to get back to Australia to see my parents again? I keep thinking about it and thinking about it and the answer just seems to be no. That’s probably the biggest thing that’s affected me off the golf course. In the past I always bottled things up, and then I’d have one pretty big outburst. Whether it was throwing a club, or swearing, or just losing my temper somewhere along the line. But the older I’ve got, the more chilled out I have become on the golf course. I’ve got a life coach who I talk to and one of my very good friends sees the same life coach so anytime that I’m struggling or he’s struggling, we get on the phone to each other and we chat it out. You just need to get whatever you’ve got on your chest out and let them listen. They can come back to you with a different way of trying to explain things in a different way. To get you to think differently and see the world in a different light. And sometimes that’s all it needs just to get you back on the straight and narrow. I’m fortunate that I’ve lived in London for the past 20 years but for guys who are travelling around on Tour living out of a suitcase life can be very lonely. You might be rooming with one person that whole time so you need that person to be your best mate. If you don’t feel like you can talk to them, it’s going to get lonely. And if you are struggling and can speak to them, you probably don’t want to keep pestering them because that’s going to start affecting their performance and the way that they feel about travelling with you. So it is difficult. If I sense another player is struggling I probably won’t say anything at the golf course, I’ll message them after the round and say, “Keep your head up, keep going. I’m always there if you need any help.” I have been known to do that, and I’m always there especially for the young guys now. I feel like a little bit of a role model for them on these mini tours so they know I’m always there for a chat. Often that’s all you need.

Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club’s second meeting for the current season takes place on the Kyneton track next Monday. The district club conducted its first meeting for 2021-2022 last Tuesday. Flemington trainer Danny O’Brien landed three winners on the nine-event program with racing conducted on a track rated a soft 7. O’Brien’s initial winners were Maracana and Kapalua Sunset in maiden plates, with Brett Prebble the successful rider. The treble came for O’Brien came when Tripoli took out the Prendergast Earthmoving BM58 Handicap over 1850m. To round off the program.
Melbourne’s key defender Jake Lever may not have been as dominant as on some occasions in the Demons’ record-breaking Grand Final victory on Saturday, but his jubilation afterwards was more than justified. The All-Australian who played his junior football at Romsey and attended Kyneton High School certainly vindicated his move back from Adelaide Crows to join Melbourne. “We wanted to be the best defensive group in the competition, and on the big stage I think we achieved that,” Lever commented. Melbourne won 21.14 (140) to 10.6 (66) after trailing by 19 points some 10 minutes into the third term in Perth. Then it was a Demons’ blitz that completely over-ran the Bulldogs, outscoring them 16 goals to one. Bulldogs forward flanker Mitch Hannan was relatively quiet and did not produced his earlier finals form. Hannan played his early football with Gisborne Rookies and Woodend Under 18s, and attended Sacred Heart College.

New Zealander Amazing Dream has joined some of Australasia’s finest pacers in winning a Kilmore Pacing Cup. The four-year-old mare, driven by Anthony Butt and trained by Nathan Purdon, came from well back in the field on Friday night to win the $80,000 Group 2 event by a head from the fastfinishing Mach Dan, with outsider Malcolm’s Rhythm third. The time-honoured race was run from the mobile barrier over 2690m.

She was one of seven Australians in the race over 157.7 kilometres on a tough course at Flanders. “This was my first time in Europe, and even though a very poorly
timed mechanical took me out of the race, it’s an experience I’ll never forget. “Thank-you to everyone in Australia for your support and to everyone here in Belgium for creating such an incredible atmosphere, “ Hanson posted on Facebook. “Fortunately, the season isn’t over yet and the fire is burning for one more fight.” Italian 23-year-old Elisa Balsano became the world champion by holding off highly rated Netherlands rider Marianne Vos in the sprint finish. After her mechanical setback, Hanson soldiered on and finished in 92nd place, just over nine and a half minutes behind the leading bunch.
